heart crushing truth

'heart crushing truth'

i do not want to die.

i thought i was a man

but when my father spoke those words

i did not feel a man at all.

i became again a wide-eyed six-year-old

who believed god was magic and

life remained the same waking in the morn

as the night before closing lids to it.

i wonder to this day

if only i had stayed asleep

might my father still be alive.
