Episode description

Joe Escalante's weekly plunge into the business end of showbiz... This week: Joe is in the beautiful city of Pamplona, Spain for the Running of the Bulls. I'm sure he's avoiding more bulls*@% over there than he endures in Hollywood. So, Producer Sam and Associate Producer Nikki take over the show and talk about the latest from the box office, and the recent influx of great horror films in the theaters. Also, drone camera operators are looking to unionize, "The Boys" 4th season, and Diddy avoiding the feds by taking to the high seas... ok, it was just white water rafting, but still...

Transcript

Joe Wescolante Life from Hollywood. By Hollywood, you mean Burbank, But actually I'm coming to you today from Pamplona, Spain, at the San Fermin Festival, otherwise known as the Running of the Bulls. But we have Nicki and Sam in the studio and I'm just going to kind of hang out a little bit in this first segment and tell you what's going on, give you the news from Pamplona, and then Nicky, you and Sam just take it from there, and I'm going to go to sleep because it is approaching. Well,

yeah, it's midnight over here. It's twelve fifteen and it's time to go to bed. I thought they party late out in Spain. Yeah, they get up at this time actually to go rave. Right, you're both you're both correct, and they are. Like if I just opened my window, you would hear what's going on. I'll take a quick step out the window. You hear that. Oh my gosh, they're like a protest or

something going on. No, this is just constant until like four in the morning, and then at about about the same time the cleanup crew starts cleaning

the streets. Because you know, this is Europe, so they pee anywhere, and and then soarly, yeah, well they clean, they clean the streets, and then the like the partiers kind of go away, and then the new visitors come for the morning running the Bulls, which takes place at eight a m. But if you want a good seat for the running of the bull you have to get here at like three in the morning or so. And so people are coming in to stake out their spots, and then

the party as the party is going to sleep. Now some of the partiers, I think, just just transition from I'm partying and then oh, look, I'm running with the bulls. And there's two kinds of groups of people. Some are coming to watch, you know, like from behind the fence, and some are coming in there to run actually get in there and run

with the bulls, which very very crazy. It's just I mean, the best way to witness this is to go to YouTube and search Pamplona, you know, bull running, and you'll see you can see this morning's already is up there and it's going on for eight days. So the the and then there's other people like me who figured out a way the rounds. Of course, right, I pardon you brought your your training shoes of course, to get up in there with the bulls, right, No, I have I'm

like a third option. I have a expensive apartment on the bull route with a balcony, so we will. This morning was the first one when we just it starts at eight and you can you kind of get out there on the balcony about a quarter to eight, and you see everybody on the streets. Everybody's wearing the same outfit. It's a white outfit with the red scarf and a red sash. Everybody has the same outfit. We have it too. And then we watch the bulls go by and it's just thrilling, and

then you go inside. Then we go back inside the apartment and watch the replays of the running of the bulls. They just keep showing on this local TV channel all day long. I'm sure there's different angles on different people getting splattered by bulls, getting you know, you know, running on the street and getting rampled by them and stuff like that. Have you ever run with the bulls? No, I don't uh do that. I mean, in my younger days, I used to be in the bull fighting world, in

the amateur world. And and then so after you've done that, like, for real, you don't really have a desire to run with the bullski. It's like a bucket list thing for people, but not for me. I could watch it and then I to the bulls. You prefer to sit with the bulls, well, I just yeah, I'll just look over the balcony, and then after it's done, take a shower, take a nap, and then you go out and buy your tickets for that evening's event, and then get something to eat, take a nap, go to mass There's,

there's, there's. It's like a medieval festival in a way, kind of like a Renaissance fair type of thing. There's always a band of some kind marching from one place to another. They just and then people are following them. They're all over the place. The streets are so packed they're barely passable. You can get stuck inside, you can get stuck somewhere where you can't get out for a long time. But it's all super fun and it goes on for eight days. I will be here for eight days, and so

I appreciate you guys taking over for me while I'm gone. And other than that, you know, the news is good. Nobody died today one guy did get carried away in a stretcher, and they give the reports right after the things done. That they have some two medics go on TV and give a report because they're wired up to every paramedic on the whole route. The whole route only takes three minutes for the bulls to go. There's hundreds of

people down there. I am watching a live stream from today's run of the bulls, and I'm seeing that the bulls are a lot faster than the people. Yeah, the run is sort of just a little jog until they duck and cover for the sidelines, you know, But yeah, these bulls are are a lot. I don't really know what I expected, but I guess I kind of expected the people to run in front of the bulls for slightly longer than they do end up doing. Well, that's it. You would

be a good commentator on this because the commentator said the same thing. They said, these bulls were really fast today, that was their big comment. So they were running super fast. Usually they get a little distracted and start kind of turning around, or they might fall and then start going after people. But today, I think kind of idea was a pon meal was the name of it, and just certain type of bulls from a certain bloodline.

These ones are all related and they all decided we just go really fast, and we're very focused, and we're going to get to that ring. And so but most of the time there's a lot more action. So it'll be a completely different batch of bulls tomorrow, and they will run in a completely different manner. And there's also four cows they're following, so it's six bulls and then there's four cows. The cows nowhere to go, and the bulls follow them and and people get, they get injured, they get they you

know, they do. Most of it is from like a face plant on the cobblestone and then just getting run trampled by people behind you, really right. The best example I have of it was from the movie City Slickers back from the nineties with Billy Crystal, where they were a group of friends were out adventure seeking and every year they do something silly, and that year they

started in Pamplona. Yeah, yeah, yeah, that's time. There's a lot of people like that letter Ernest Hemingway types here, but mostly it's it's Spaniards from the area, and there's a few visitors, a few Americans with very few. I usually see Japanese people here, like when I'm watching it on TV or at other festivals, but I haven't seen any Japanese tourists. But you know, Japan is so cheap now that I think everything else is

expensive for them. They probably don't go anywhere. I'm planning another trip to Japan right now actually as we speak, because of the economy out there. Don't let's go a long way. Oh damn, really get on there. Oh yeah, if you're playing a trip to Japan, now's the time. Now is the time. And things here are not cheap, not expensive, about the same as they are back home. But there's a lot of music.

There's also a music festival. Some of the bands that don't pay pera is one of the bands that played at Coachella, and they're playing here, and then Mad Professor Reggae guy playing here, and then the rest of them. Most of them I see are like basque artists that speak that we're Basque language, and so there's like, you know, I would say the basque Taylor Swift played last night. She put on a show. It was identical to a Taylor Swift show. Like little guitar, vocals the piano, and

then she was on O the talk shows. Her name was Zato and that was interesting. But I think we're I think about ready to go for the traffic. So I think I'm going to leave you guys to your Hollywood stuff, and I can't wait to hear what you guys do. All right, stay safe out there, avoid getting trampled. And next week, tell us if there's any truth to the rumors that the cows are on performance enhancers, because those it looks like they're running a little too fast. It might be

that might be the scoopa of the week. I'll check into that. Yeah, let us know if it rains in those planes. I'm excited to hear back. Okay, I will, thanks guys. Joe Escalante live from Hollywood, Not really Hollywood. We're actually in Burbank right now, across the street from a Wiener Schnitzel that sells beer. I'm going to go there afterwards and get myself a Wiener brow. By the way, you can obviously tell I am not Joe Escalante. I'm Sam, the engineer and producer on the show

with me right now. We got associate producer NICKI joining in. Joe, thank you so much for joining us live from Pamplona, Spain. It was like super late for him, so he was ready to crash out, but he wanted to spend a couple of minutes with us and give us the rundown on how the Running of the Bulls was going out in Pamplona. NICKI, first off, you had you ever seen any footage from the running of the bulls, Not until I just looked up the live stream from yesterday's running of

those bulls, and my god, they were so fast. I kind of hoped that the people would maybe keep up, but they were taking a quick jog for about two minutes in front of those bulls before just running off into the corner. I was like, guys, come on, get a scooter or something. You got to keep up with these bulls. Yeah. Now, if you every year, there's got to be at least one or two fatalities at least just from people getting trampled by either the bulls or other people.

But yeah, I was talking about in the last segment. Great movie. If you ever want to see kind of like the lore and the history of it. Very quickly is City Slickers with Billy Crystal from the nineties. That's a great movie that really the first three minutes of the movie is them and the first thing you see is them just running as fast as they can from the bulls. It's it's intense, it's a lot of tradition and history behind it, and it sounds like exactly something Joe Escalante would be at.

So I'm glad he's having a good time, and we're going to definitely make sure that we batten down the hatches and make sure the ship is covered for him while he's out there. But right now, this is live from Hollywood, not live from Pamplona. So what's more associated with Hollywood than movies? And we're going to take a look at the box office right now, Nikki, what are the box office top ten? Right now? What are the

movies that everybody's been going to see this week? Well, yeah, right right this moment and it's first weekend out top of the box office is Despicable me for But what is it total gross of? Like already one hundred and pretty much a quarter million dollars. I know some people who are my age, like you know, between their twenty second and twenty fifth birthday, all going out this weekend to see it to party. Oh yeah, I remember when it first came out. I was like eight or something, still a

baby, so the nostalgia just keeping it alive for sure. I'm an old older guy. I'm in my forties, and I remember when the first one came out and it was one of the most adorable animated films I'd ever seen. And after that just you have you if you get, if you get your feelings tickled by a lot of cute stuff. That movie was just covered in cute stuff, and the minions were obviously the things that stole the show. So after that, I definitely kept up with the whole series, especially

after I had kids. So I'm definitely gonna be going and seeing Despicable Me for this coming week. I'm sure probably on Tuesday, because you know, AMC has that you know Tuesday special where because most people don't go to movies, so let's just make it cheaper for everybody. And they also set up like nice little family deals too. But number two, so as far as

family goes, family movies go in the box office inside out too. That one right there, we were just making some small talk about how much money that movie is making worldwide right now? What are the numbers on that? So the total gross for that in its fourth weekend out is already five hundred and thirty three million dollars, kind of inching slowly upwards, insane. It's like, what the number one movie in Mexico of all time? Yeah, and it's now the number one film all time in Mexico. It's like made

over a billion dollars. It's the number five animated film of all time. Now it's it's making and raking in bank right now. So that's a movie that Disney and Pixar are definitely happy to have in their slew and because they got a lot of the stuff that's been coming out of Disney has been kind of, you know, a little bit disappointing, especially when you look at the Star Wars stuff and it's the more recent Marvel stuff. But Pixar,

you can't lose it. Seems like everything Pixar does is just gold. So I'm happy I got to see it. And we were talking about the characters on that one. I've ever seen a better representation visually of anxiety, and that's coming from a licensed therapist, you guys. Oh, yeah, that's a diagnosably good movie. Oh yeah, No, there's a moment where you see anxiety kind of take control and go into overdrive, and I was like, I had to point it out to my I have a fourteen year old

daughter. I'm like, that's a panic attack. That's a panic attack right there, that's what it looks like. I've never seen somebody so happy to point out a panic attack. Well, I'm really good at doing like visual representations of different feelings like that. Like a good example of that is the movie War Games. I always for people who tend to overthink things and they really can't like find the actual answer, but they're just so stuck in those

deep thoughts and they're just recycling it. It's like that last scene from the movie War Games where all where the computer is fighting against itself playing tic tac toe, trying to figure out that the best way to not the best way to win a battle that you can't win, that we're there are no winners, is to not fight at all. So when you adapt that to anxiety, it makes it so that you don't actually like dwell on the stuff.

You don't allow yourself to get spiraled into a lot of those anxious thoughts. So my brain works with old school movies and kind of identifying different emotions and different diagnoses that go with them. I've seen some memes actually about Inside Out too, where it's like someone imagining that if they took sol Oft suddenly they just a realistic hand comes into their brain and starts shaking the anxiety character around. So, yeah, it'd be kind of funny to see that. And

Inside Out three perhaps I'm waiting for that. That's going to be great really that they knocked it out of the park with toy story and they were able to squeeze that for what it was worth, and I get the feeling this is going to be another one of those toy story like things because a lot of younger kids are growing up with this as their toy story exactly. So

that's really cool. Yeah. Next up in the box office, we have a Quiet Place Day one, which is now grossing almost that one hundred million mark, pretty crazy for the what is this the third in the Quiet Place

series? Yeah, and that's another horror film that's been coming out really over the last i'd say like a year and a half, horror movies have been coming out thick and Heavy recently, and I have so much to say about that as someone who recently just logged over one hundred horror movies into my letterbox. By the way, Cherry Funfetti, Cherry with an eye Funfetti like the cake. That's my letterbox. You want to see some of the worst reviews,

but some of the most accurate star ratings. Check out my letterbox, guys. I like that, Yeah. And then actually following it up is Maxine, another horror film from a twenty four that's the second in the I Think X series with Mia goth our new favorite squeam queen of this era. I would say she and Mikeah Monroe, who will talk a little bit more about later in the upcoming movie Long Legs, are really killing it in the horror game. One of my favorite actors in the horror genre is actually a

good friend of mine. I'm totally bias is Kyle Gollner. Really Yeah, He's been in a bunch of stuff, as he was in Smile most recently. I loved Smart Well. Actually, the first time I saw Smile, I was laughing my on the theater because at first it was a comedy, and then I rewatched it with my boyfriend who was like, hey, this is actually a horror and so watching it next to somebody who's afraid that makes you, you know, that makes you think it's actually scary. But it's

a great movie. Oh yeah, No, So one of these days I might have we may have a horror theme show. I may reach out to Gollner and see if he wants to come in on the show, because he's as good a dude. He's one of my karaoke buddies. Oh wucky, Yeah, No, karaoke is a big thing for me. But what was the next one in line? Next up, we've got Bad Boys, Rider or Die, another Sony movie that one's been getting that was going to be like the big summer hit that everybody was hoping for a lot, like the

press machine behind Will Smith was really in full operation. It was supposed to be the thing that kind of reintroduced him back to Hollywood after slapping Chris Rock right, and it's doing pretty well, but it's not doing as well as it looks like it was projected to do, which is kind of a bummer for them. But right up after that, at number six, we have Horizon and American Saga Chapter one from Warner Bros. That's coming in. Well,

it's second weekend and it's already at number six. It looked really good. I mean, I like a Western. What do you think. I haven't seen it, so I don't know. I don't know enough about it, but it looks pretty good. My dad is looking at watching that one soon because he's kind of addicted to Westerns, coming from the Eastern Bloc of Europe from Poland. Violence. Wait, I got to hear his reviewer SEESU.

I want to. Oh yeah, I got to hear what he's got to say about that movie, because that I already have the utmost respect for your father. A brief interactions that I've had with you, where you describe how he is, I'm like, I want to. I want to hear what his reviews on some great war movies. Though we'll have him on the show. I think we can have him on the show. Next up, we've got number seven, Sound of Hope, the story of Possum Trot, which I haven't heard of, actually, but I looked it up and it

looks pretty interesting. Some trot, possum trot. It sounds like an illness. I don't want. Next up, we've got Kolkey twenty eight ninety eight ad Now one looked amazing. It's a Bollywood film. I think it. The VFX looked stunning when I checked out the trailer. I mean, it looks really good. I'm glad it's hitting number eight. Number nine. We've got The Bike Riders, which I've seen a ton about and I'm planning on seeing this week. And after that, we've got Kinds of Kindness, which

I know Joe talked about last week. Is that right? Yeah, he was very much into that movie and very much against the Bike Riders. So there. Yeah, we got both of those movies tailing that are trailing in at the top end of the top ten. And yeah, so coming up next, we're going to be talking a little bit more about more random stuff from Hollywood. We're going to see if we can dig into some legal news.

And also there's for all you union folk out here, there's going to be if you are a camera operator, especially if you're a drone operator, we got some news for you that you don't want to miss. Keeper right here, this is Joe Escalante live from Hollywood. We'll be right back right after traffic. Joe Escalante Live from Hollywood, although we're not in Hollywood and

I'm not Joe Escalante, So how about that? Got the vegan substitute version for you guys this week, the wish dot Com version of Joe Escalante Live from Hollywood. I'm Sam, the producer on the show. I got assistant producer Nikki here. Joe is live from Pamploa. Thanks Joe again for joining us in the first segment. We really appreciated and giving us the rundown on how the Running of the Bulls went for you. He seriously, that's like living in the lap of luxury, you know what, Like he was saying

it usually. That reminded me of like how people line up at three in the morning at like the Rose Parade to get the best seat possible. And I'm like, I'm never gonna do that for something that I can watch live on TV. I can't. And he found kind of like the comfortable middle. I'm going out there, but I'm just gonna sit on my balcony in

this really really nice cush apartment and have a glass of wine. Dress up like I went running like you know, cosplay like I'm one of the runners, and then just sit there and watch people get trampled in front of me. It's fantastic, exactly, And I mean the one problem with that is that he's in like a one stationary position for the running of the bulls,

and yesterday they ran apparently way too fast. Commentators at the Running of the Bulls were like, Wow, these guys were kind of a little too speedy, so maybe he caught them for a second. But if I've got, you know, I've got overhead footage of these guys running, I don't really want to go anywhere for it. Yeah, the only injury Joe had was pulling a leg muscle by getting up too fast. Really enjoy that time out there, Joe. That's like bucket list material stuff. I really like Joe's

life, no joke, I kind of want it. He does so many amazing things, and I really it's like, just let me come with you one of these days, Joe, just for surfing in the desert and he's sitting for the running of the bulls. I fit in like some larger, you know, bags that you can check in, and I'm willing to take that route so we can make that happen exactly. Anyways, we're talking about some of the movies that did really well in the box office last weekend.

But there's a movie we got coming out this week that we're all excited for, and not just horror, because it's a horror film, and a lot of horror film buffs are like, yes, another great horror film we got to go and check out at the theaters. But this one also it hits a cult following as well because it's gotten Nicholas Cage in it. So Nikki, tell me more about folks. I'm excited about this one. I'm thrilled about this movie for like several different reasons all converging into one. The movie

is Long Legs. The director Osgood Perkins is already a seasoned horror director. He did what was it? It was Black Coat's Daughter, which I think I saw about five years ago. It was a stunning, beautiful, crazy horror film, very psychological, that also has Kieran and Chepka in it, who was an amazing actress and you might know her as being the daughter from mad Men. Yeah, she's grown up to have a really cool career and that was a great star in Black Coat's Daughter. But in Long Legs,

Osgood Perkins is featuring another amazing scream queen. We mentioned Mia Goth in the last segment, but this girl is Micha Monroe and she is an amazing horror film actress. She was in It Follows, where she was just the standout star. She was also in a film I talked about last week called Watcher, where you know, she's a little bit more mature and it's also just

an amazing psychological thriller. So this is really where she shines as an actress that paired with Nicholas Cage as the spooky, scary boogeyman, the maniacal energy of Nicholas Cage taking over and I was just reading his character, like the the bio on the character that he's playing, and he's playing an unwell rural dollmaker who crafts life size effigies of his victims that inexplicably caused their families to turn homicidal. Okay, yeah, that is the plot for a very cheesy

horror film and I'm already loving it. And that's the kind of movie that you see Nicholas Cage take and turn into one of those cult classics. That's the thing is like in we've been talking about recently, over like the last maybe year and a half or so, horror films have been thriving in the market right now, And you take Nicholas Cage and put them into a film like this that has like the makings for a cult classic right there exactly.

And I think something happened maybe after that Sea Word pandemic that we had everyone's kind of looking for that same sense of internal fear and uncertainty, and maybe that's why everyone's loving these horror movies. But I just like getting stressed out about somebody else's problems, you know. So horror movies are already just my favorite genre of all time. But now it's got Nick Cage. She's gonna be the craziest dude ever. Plus Michael Monroe, plus already so many horror

movie tropes like this doll making thing. I mean, I haven't seen a movie about scary dolls since I think Hereditary, and that was already so promising. Well, and a lot of times when they have dolls, they're like voodoo dolls, where if like here's like this is you, and I'm gonna poke it with a needle and light it on fire and you're gonna feel it but this is much more psychological. You're not dealing with physical pain, which

is scary enough. You're dealing like somebody makes an effigy of you, and now you lose psychological control and want to kill the people around you that you care about. Yeah, and one thing too about Long Legs that I've been looking forward to since seeing the trailer is that they're doing some really interesting stuff

with the filmmaking. Like they transition between a lot of four to three film shots, maybe like on Bowlex. They also do that classic two to one aspect ratio for like widescreen film, and then they also do some sixteen to nine depending on like other shots that the characters are taking on cameras within the film themselves, So you're switching between perspectives and also between the aspect ratio of the film. That just watching the trailer, I got that very uneasy feeling

that good filmmaking is supposed to give you. I like that, And right there you went into a lot of the technical stuff that a guy who's like not in the film industry. I my connection to Hollywood is in the radio field and stuff like that, and I occasionally like have clients that are you know, either in associated with the industry maybe. But the amazing thing is that you get that sense of like genuine horror, like you just from watching

the trailer. It builds the interest in wanting to see it just based on how you can see it's being filmed, not just the plotline or the storyline, because like you can take a storyline like The Exorcist that's a horrifying storyline that you didn't necessarily need to have special camera angles or using different tricks to make it look or to set that sense of tension. It just had that

sense of tension built in. When you can get filmmaking to have to just like have the right kind of camera shots to build that sense of suspense and build that sense of tention, it just adds to the mix. It makes it so that feels it makes the experience of fear that much more visceral exactly. And I think another horror movie that did this that was kind of in

that indie psycho psychological genre was Disappear Completely. It's a Mexican horror film that one I have to really commend for the use of filmmaking techniques to increase the horror but also just to make some really captivating shots, Like you can make a scary movie by things coming out and bonking on the head and coming out from around corners or whatever. But like, if the filmmaking's good, it's gonna make me extra excited. So I'm actually I've already bought my tickets.

I bought my tickets two weeks ago for the eleventh. It's coming out July eleventh. I'm going to go see at the Santa Monica AMC. That's my big plan. Nice. Nice, you were talking about horror films and like suspense. Really that's the thing. A lot of times you don't need to have the jump scares throughout like routinely in the movie to make a genuinely scary

film. A great example of that is the movie Audition, the Japanese film where the entire movie is a setup for the last ten minutes and builds such a sense of horror and the payoff it pays off, it's so good. But yeah, that we got all these great horror films coming out and talked about the way that camera works and the way that different shots established that mood and that sense of drama and tension within a film. And here's here's a

silky smooth segue. Now for all you cameramen out there, the we were talking about a little bit earlier, drone cameramen are looking to unionize now exactly. So they actually have just been decidedly included in the Local six hundred section of the IATSE union agreement. So one reason why I guess they weren't originally included in this agreement is that they were getting pushed back against employers subcontracting these

these groups of drone operators. And some personal experience on my end, I was a PA on set for Black Panther two when they were shooting it. Also, oh yeah, it was all overnight shoots for about a week and a half in Worcester, Massachusetts. They call it the Hollywoo since so many movies are being filmed out there. It's like a full city and it's very empty, like not a lot of people live there, so it's a perfect film set. And I was stationed a couple nights out by the drone crew.

It was a very ragtag group of people. We had, you know, just people from all walks of life, all different shapes and sizes and personalities. It was kind of awesome. I felt like I was watching Ninja Turtles do something nice. There was also a girl named April there, so

that maybe aided my association. But they were subcontracted out to do this shoot for Marvel, and so I can see why maybe they would be seen as like not included if they're not totally part of the process of Marvel's specific filmmaking. But you do need these people who know how to operate a drone to make those shots happen, So it would be pretty unfair for them to not

be included in those union discussions, you know. Yeah, well, and we went through the strikes last year of the writer's strike and the actors strike and all of that stuff, and now everybody with all of the money going through all the different streaming services and a lot of the you know, there's and now with the increased use of drone footage, you're gonna have to take

care of them too. So I definitely I'm on their side on this, because if everybody else is going to have representation to make sure that they have their needs financially and healthcare needs and all of that stuff taken care of, they definitely need to be taken care of that because they are now responsible for some of the most dynamic footage you see in film exactly, Like you're not going to get a shot of the car exploding and the motorcycle jumping in midair

and somebody grabbing the special key out of the window all in one shot if it's not on a drone. And I'm sorry, your gimbal's really cool, but it's not gonna cut it for a lot of these shots. And you know, we've we've seen stuff like this since twenty fourteen, when I think it was any kind of drone being used in one of these future productions was allowed to use American airspace. So it's been ten full years of super cool shots in Skyfall, Jurassic World, Game of Thrones, etc. Like you

watch a show that's highly produced, you've seen some drone footage. Absolutely. Anyways, that was really cool conversation about Like really, I never thought that we could get into that cool of a conversation about drone footage and like unionizing and stuff like that, because I mean, I get it. This is more or less a legal Hollywood show, a Hollywood law show with Joe on here. And usually the most stirring thing that we get into is intellectual property.

So this is something where I'm like, Wow, we're actually getting into some really cool stuff about Hollywood filmmaking stuff. So thank you so much for getting into that with your especially your experience on set around the people who control that stuff. That stuff's really cool. Yeah, that was super cool. Anyways, we're gonna be right back. We're gonna get into some more stuff. I got one more segment to go on, Joe Ascalante Live from Hollywood.

Let's check the traffic. Joe as Cavan, Joe Escalante live from Hollywood, actually live from Burbank. And yeah, neither one of us in this room right now we're Joe Escalante, but we won't mention that very much more. Joe is in Pamplona right now, enjoying a nice night of sleep after watching bulls go stampeding through the streets of Pamplona. It's fantastic. So anyways, I'm Sam, producer on the show, and we have assistant producer Nikki

in the room. Thank you so much for joining us right now. By the way, also, thank you so much for all of you joining us on your iHeartRadio app. Be sure to hit us up and like us and give us thumbs up on all that stuff as well. All Right, so we actually we talked about a bunch of movies, movies we're excited about. I actually saw a movie I thank you for streaming. I saw on Netflix, the new Beverly Hills cop movie, The Eddie Murphy, the fourth of

the series. I'm guessing this is going to be the last of them. Everybody, they're super old, and that was kind of one of the jokes in the movie. But it was really cool because it felt like watching one of those old school eighties nineties action films. It felt like watching one of those old Beverly Hills cop movies, and that was awesome. It was something I wish I could have seen on the big screen because of the level of

action that they had in the movie. But at the same time, it's one of those where I was like, I sat down, I'm like, I got nothing else to do right now, I'm gonna sit down and chill, watch some Netflix by myself and actually watch a movie instead of netflixing and chilling the way they usually do. And this was It was a fun movie. It wasn't necessarily a great movie, but it was an absolute fun movie. Highly recommended. I mean, yeah, you said you were really cracking

up at this one. Oh yeah. It didn't have like as many hilarious moments as the original like the first two did, but it had a couple of moments that were just knock out funny that I could not stop laughing at. But it was a good story, solid movie. Highly recommend it. Go and catch it. And on that same vein of seeing movies that are that feel a whole lot older than they might be but still really hold up, I watched another Guys, Guess what a horror movie yet again this week.

I watched it on shutter It's where I stream a lot of the just horror movies. I cut all the fat and just watch what I want. It was called Triangle and it's from two thousand and seven. It's about this group of people who are on a little yacht for a little vacation on the water and they end up capsizing and getting on this cruise ship that's kind of

like a Bermuda Triangle situation. And the two thousand and seven bit I mentioned because it has that same super exaggerated and overexposed color grading that I feel like a lot of movies from that period have think maybe Twilight, but if it was like way too bright that I really appreciate about filmmaking, Like it's just super stylized and fun and also just a really dramatic plot line. So that's something that I think they could only really do in that twenty ten period.

But loved that movie was it was a super fun and actually very spooky watch. Nice. Yes, I'm glad you caught that one. So also you wanted to talk about The Boys the show? What's going on? Yeah? So I only watch things where people get beat up and die. That seems to be my favorite die quality programming. Yeah. Yeah. I like to pride myself on watching only really intellectual stuff and then I watch horror movies at home and polish reality TV at the gym because I like to fill my brain

with crap. But one thing that I really have been enjoying for the last couple of months has been The Boys. I caught all of the previous seasons up until like season three, I think in the earlier months of this year, and then I was highly anticipating this next season. But this season is hit or miss for a lot of people because I think something that The Boys does really really well is is. It has really interesting plotlines for some of

its characters. A lot of fans of The Boys series that streams on Amazon Prime will remember the A Train character having a really awesome arc surrounding his race and his family in season three, and that was a fantastic part of the show. We kind of remember earlier seasons being amazing commentary about the corporations of the United States, plus the superheroes being representations of maybe politicians and other famous

political figures. But in this season, people are starting to get a little bit annoyed with getting hit on the head over and over again about beliefs that a lot of people share in terms of equality and everybody having a good time

together. But it's getting a little corny. They actually, on the most recent episode that I just watched, made some joke about one of the characters that I remember reading as a tweet in twenty twenty like two, So I was like, oh, God, are we really taking hints from Twitter? There isn't our character writing now? Yeah, people are just getting I think the characters are getting written a little bit out of character just to keep the

plot going. It's people are saying that it's also a little bit too shock value for what it is, and anybody who's also fans of very bloody and gory content as well as superheroes might know the show Invincible, which that to me is actually it's worse in terms of it's the self shaded Gore is maybe worse to me than the super VFX stuff that you can get away with more with animation, for sure. As far as like Gore and all of that

stuff. It seems like as far as like the messaging and the political points are becoming a little bit more overt now where before they were kind of understated and maybe people weren't quite paying attention despite the fact that everybody was telling them, dude, this is what's exactly going on, And now all of a sudden, it took four seasons for people say, wait, are they making

fun of us exactly. Yeah, there's one character named Firecracker who is the like USA Gal also the Bierce's Theory show host, And I thought like, oh, I didn't know that we could get this close to doing Alex Jones on TV without saying his name or likeness, but yeah, here we are. Yeah, it's just it's pretty overt. It's getting a little corny. Yeah, I'm ready for them to either wrap it up or you know, be as nuanced as they were the first couple of seasons. I thought it

was really interesting. Yeah, they made it so that a lot of people didn't really realize that they were being lampooned. So if the writing continued to make it like that, I could see where a lot of people would be a lot happier and some people would be remaining in a lot of ignorant bliss. Right. Also, we were taking a look around the news as far as Hollywood goes, and there was a couple of stories that popped out. We've been talking a lot about Diddy and a lot of his legal troubles.

He's getting me tooed for a lot of different, very good and valid reasons, and amid those legal troubles, he went whitewater rafting. I mean, if I was getting me too, I think the only thing that that would call my nerves and make my legal team feel really glad to represent me would be getting on a raft and practicing my paddling for when I eventually escape to a foreign island. Yeah right, Yeah, it seems to be doing pretty well. Find a place where they don't extradite and just you know, going

because they're keeping an eye on his planes. Like there's that big thing where everybody thought he was like flying out of the country and they were tracking his plane and then they realized he wasn't even on it, and he was like getting his hair done somewhere in Brooklyn or something, and he was like, what's going on everybody? And now it's all of a sudden, this is where we're at. Is now he's whitewater rafting while everybody is like, dude,

we're canceling you. You're not allowed to go and do whitewater rafting. That like, should people who are in that kind of legal situation be allowed to go white water rafting and smile and have fun? No, No, I don't think so. I mean the TMZ footage is I cannot even imagine being the paparad who had to get all the way out there with their camera equipment to catch the five second running of the bull, And by running of the bull, I mean rafting of the diddy on that lake. I wouldn't

want to be anybody involved. Yeah, it's one of those moments where if you're the paparazzi on that one you got to kind of like say, how did I get here? Like all of my life's decisions and everything led me to this point. I can't wait to sell this gifts worth of a length of a video of someone rafting. Yeah. Yeah, anyways, one more thing. One of my favorite actors of all time, Danny Trehill, got into a fight on fourth of July after he got hit by a water balloon,

and that's just really funny. You don't want to piss off Machete just saying that's one guy you do not want to be on the wrong side. Yeah, it's only a response to press regarding that incident was I hate bullies, So it seems like he was trying to be someone standing up for justice in the face of inequality in bullying water balloons. Right. Yeah, anyways, thank you so much Nikki for joining us. It was a lot of

fun. We're going to be right back after this big break. Make sure that if you want to catch any more of the show, hit up our iHeartRadio app page Live from Hollywood with Joe Escalante And by the way, Joe will join us again next weekend from Pamplona, Spain again, so that'll be fun. We'll hear mar Yeah, I can't wait to hear how many people got trampled during the week.
