Episode description

HAPPY HALLOWEEN this month! It’s time for our next Top 10 Horror Movies of 2023 list here in Episode 118 of Jay of the Dead’s New Horror Movies, The Gold Standard of Horror Movie Podcasts. In this episode, we are counting down three individuals’ Top 10 Horror of 2023 lists: You will hear from Jay of the Dead and his son, Horror Avenger in Training, Spawn of the Dead. And you will also hear from our Official Contributor, Kagan “The Fruit Brute” Breitenbach! This episode gets surprisingly wacky at times, so we hope that those who listen are feeling in good humor and good-natured. After all, it is Kagan’s first time ever presenting a Top 10 list on a podcast — and Spawn’s first time ever even creating a Top 10 list! At one point, Kagan even sneaks a 2024 Horror movie into his list, and Spawn of the Dead breaks his list down to considering even the foley work in Horror films! Jay includes an “Unofficial Award for the Most _______ Horror Movies of 2023” for each film pick. And of course, as Jay, Spawn and Kagan count ’em down from 10 to 1, we continue to carry on our tradition of awarding a free Horror Blu-ray to a lucky listener! So, join us if you really wanna be an HB!

This episode is dedicated to the Vampire Listats. You are listening to a Halloween special from Jay of the Dead's New Horror Movies. Hi and welcome to Jay of the Dead's New Horror Movies, the Gold Standard of horror movie podcasts.

This is one of our Top 10 Horror Movies of 2023 episodes and you have probably noticed this far because I think the previous episode you heard thus far is Dr. Shock and the Gilman Joel gave their Top 10 of 2023 and now I am just immensely pleased and so honored to be here with the Horror Avenger in training. Number 10, my own flesh and blood, want to welcome Spawn of the Dead. Hi. I'm glad you're here son. Also I have like 25 favorite people in the world. I really do. I have this list.

I haven't written it out everybody but I am a list maker as you'll see tonight and I do have a lot of favorite people but there's like a special like 25 and this man is in there. He is an official contributor to Jay of the Dead's New Horror Movies and he is also a fantastic musician that I personally look up to very much. He's a composer, performer, just exceptional talent. We love having him as part of our show and welcome the Fruit Brute Kagan Brighton Bach.

Thanks so much for having me on and oh I have to tell you are you familiar with the term sock doleger? No. Okay. So I'm a river runner and in the Grand Canyon there's this rapid called sock doleger which is from a boxing term which is a one two punch. It's like a two punch knockout and what I just heard was like as somebody who's been listening to you for you know a decade at least at this point Jay hearing your son say hi just in your voice like I legit started tearing up a little bit.

And then after you said that I was like oh shoot I'm going to start crying. Well we are sock dolegered me. Well thank you. That's awesome. We'll see the thing is we're all just about on the edge of tears of happiness because this is my favorite I was telling spawn earlier today. This is my all time favorite sort of pie casting episode.

And the listeners know this because they've been giving me the side eye for quite a while now I mean it has been it has taken me forever to put out the top 10 of 2022 which is ridiculous and then now we're going top 10 of 2023 and pretty soon we're going to need to do top 10 of 2024.

Just want to assure everybody this is the reason I mean these lists and I'm not messing or the reason why I do movie podcasting no joke and one other thing I was telling spawn behind the scenes I'm like you know how when you're a kid and on December 26th.

The day after Christmas you're like oh only 364 more days to go that's how I feel after these episodes I'm like oh well start another year let's get working on the next list and that's how I feel so I'm so excited that listeners we're going to be here the three

of us tonight on this particular episode to give you our top 10 horror movies of 2023 and I'm going to start that out by asking Mr. Kagan Brightonbock here and he he doesn't know this was coming a little bit of a curve ball here but I know that he's he's good in boy good under pressure we typically give our overall general thoughts of how horror cinema was in 2023 and so I was just wondering did you feel like 2023 was a good year for horror movies.

Oh wow well cool question and honestly I just think it's so hard to look at cinema any other way than subjectively you know through the lens of what we're going through in our own lives and I definitely have had moments in my my life where I really have been

float and there are years back and you know the 2010s where I was listening to horror movie podcasts like die hard listener watching everything that came out and so I hold those years and such high esteem and even though last year we'll have to see how it does under the

test of time but last year was definitely a year where I got back into horror in a very big way so my subjective experience was that last year was pretty bangarang but I I definitely have heard people on other podcasts saying it was it was a lackluster year but I have to say even in prepping for this show I would put it on the kind of well above average year not an exceptional year with just classic after classic but I would put it in the well above average category.

Okay did I perform okay under pressure? Oh yeah that was excellent and absolutely you know I agree with your sentiments 100 percent my kick it over to spawn what what did you think of horror in 2023 because yeah you and I we actually saw a lot of the same stuff together yeah and what what did you think of it overall 2023 was a great year for horror movies.

There were some misses but there were lots of hits yeah I would say and it was hard to do this because it's like there were lots of good ones yeah I'd take lots of time and like evaluate each one yeah if you would have picked among your favorites of 2023 do you think you would have had a top 20 top 25 top 30 what would you have had if it was like just your favorites what would you say if it was just all my favorites I could have had a top 20 okay yeah that's right I had to know

down to 10 I'm with you yeah I was about around top 18ish what about you Kagan what did you yeah no that's the same for me I was actually counting because I have my what would have been honorable mentions and it would have been exactly a top 18 for me as well okay yeah well then

we must all have the same answers then that's good yeah and for me I here's what here's something remarkable I want to say about 2023 in my opinion for many years we've had this I guess a dearth of quality horror films especially in January it was infamously the dumping ground

one year that stands out what was it like 2010 when we had daybreakers daybreakers was a January horror film and I I happen to love that movie and when that came out I remember thinking hey this is a January horror movie that's pretty cool we'll get this you guys get this on my top 10 list here

for 2023 I have three January releases and that is the coolest thing ever so I'm super pumped about that I was really cool I mean I doesn't take much don't press me okay again I mean that's that is not true that is not true I think you're very strict it's during critics but I actually I'm

wondering if you are you going to be sharing with those January releases are as we go through oh I sure will you know it you know oh yeah please do that's right okay and I got one more question for you guys and then we'll get underway so we'll start with spawn here I'm gonna give you this

one and then that way Kagan can have a minute because last time I gave him all the pressure so when you created your top 10 horror list spawn what did you mean what do you mean when you tell people all this is my top 10 and in other words are you saying these are my favorites or these are the

scariest or these are the most well made like what are you saying when you say this is my top 10 okay so that is a very good question Jay thank you I would say it isn't solely based off of this is how good the actors did in this movie versus the other movie or like this is how terrible the CGI was

versus that movie so it's gonna go lower it was more kind of like a checklist but the most unorganized checklist like it fit the criteria if it fit like decent CGI good acting that I could like tell wasn't just like cheap actors and stuff yeah cheap actors yes I love that and then

like decent special effects and then like good bolly artists and all you you you must have to bring in it fully okay yeah yeah and then because like in some like the 1970s movies some of them are like really poor made poorly made sorry and then you can like hear it not being the right

kind of sound yeah but like sometimes there's really good folly and that's what I like yeah okay so you're you actually pay attention to the way things sound in a horror movie like you hear that and you're like that doesn't sound like an axe going into somebody's face yeah that's not what

it sounds like when I do it just kidding I wonder what movie you could possibly be referring to I wonder which one right and I like to pay attention to the camera angles and nice the plot of it yeah and the score and the amount of score and stuff so it's like all that so you have an overall

kind of vision of the horror film how so you you have a number of things that you're looking at overall quality it sounds like okay and then with that I'll take how much I enjoyed it and I'll do the other ratings and then I'll do it out of 10 stars I got you okay 10 stars okay what about

UK and how what's your approach for what what does top 10 mean to you oh boy I've kind of have like an existential crisis in terms of my life as like a pseudo film critic and I'm not even kidding you because like as having my own filmmaking background and scoring films I well first off I want

to say to spawn that's incredible as a sound designer myself to think that somebody's really paying attention to the fully that closely that's incredible I love it yeah thank you sounds I love it but I guess I was a little bit of a cinephile when I first started making top 10 lists and you

know I would post them on my social media and just really hold my head up proudly because they were not only the my favorites but they were objectively the best of course of course because you know like because I only choose films that are well done yes so I made this list earlier this year and Dave

Z was talking on exploding heads about the favorite versus best debate and it broke my soul open I was just like I lost I lost touch with reality he has a way of doing that doesn't he he does like I mean it's kind of crazy like the way that he looks at movies is very different than

a lot of other people I've listened to and I thought you know what favorite and best should kind of be the same thing and so I did some really bold things here and this is the first time I've actually presented a top 10 list on a podcast and this is the first time I've strayed from my

convention of putting on what I consider objectively the best films and have instead gone for the films I like more nice crazy right I love it that you did that because you put his hair down put your hair down brother I love that no I'm I'm serious because yeah my thing everybody gives me grief and that's fine you guys can too even like everybody can still give me grief but my number ratings I mean sometimes I'll have a higher number rating lower down the list but for me Kagan it's because

well yeah filmmaking you know technical achievements yeah I mean that's that's like a nine quality film but it wasn't as fun as the you know the 7.5 film so the 7.5's higher on my list 100% and like it kind of because you know I'm a math person as well you know I was an engineering

major before I went into music and so everything has to kind of like line up and this is the first time I've ever done what you just said where I have a higher rated movie lower on my list yes yes it's weird I know I know and some people think that's crazy like I remember you all know I'm

everybody knows I love Bill Shetty I've listened to him for so many years and horror podcasting even though he and I in many ways have very different sensibilities in the way that we approach horror film criticism but he had a strong it just staunch it's like for him it was like obviously

the tenser first then the 9.5's then the 9's and that's fine I understand why people feel that way and I respect it I respect it I just personally I can't do it that way because I'm juggling like a few different kinds of things like the the favorite best there's technical quality but I'll tell

you what I did so I did as I usually do but with each film I made a little surprise for you guys in the listeners and for each film I kind of qualified by giving it an unofficial award for the most blank of 2023 so they have different ads and tips yeah this film is like like for example

I have one that is the scariest of 2023 like for example but above all my overarching these are my favorite horror films that I saw in 2023 and of course listeners of course we did not see every single horror film put out so at the time we're recording this these are our top 10 lists for

everything we've seen thus far such as it is so are you guys ready to get underway did you guys have anything else you want to say in this preface I hope that we're friends by the end of this yeah okay yeah I have I have one omission on my list that has literally made me a little anxious

oh because my cred is riding on it brother you better you better not piss off spawn or he'll be I'll come at you he'll be getting he'll be getting rowdy over here I'm scared we live in the same state you know I know but right now I did go ahead after you I have one I mean I don't know why I

care so much about this but like are we doing the the our drink announcement during oh yes thank you so much for reminding me because I probably would have forgotten that please keggan lead us into this okay so this is something I saw at the store and I'm obsessed with pineapple I just

it's my favorite fruit I eat so much pineapple it makes my mouth sore well I was going through the store and you know how they have that like simply lemonade brand of yes lemonade yes like really good lemonade yes they have simply pineapple oh my god and it was one of those like you

know the slow motion the heavens you know the clouds part and there is simply pineapple and so that's what I'm drinking tonight is simply pineapple very good okay cool lemon press that sounds good and and what do you have spawn because because I told these guys we have this tradition of course when

we're going to do top 10 show you get to have a good drinks so go ahead spawn yeah I was standing there in the chevron it was a holiday but go ahead he keeps calling chevron I think the holiday people are gonna be really mad about that I just want to keep drinking the holiday and I was in

front of the soda section and I was like in between the coke fridge and the bright and mountain dew fridge yeah well actually the spread is in the coke fridge but I was in between coke and mountain dew because who wants gatorade for a podcast that was gatorade but you just totally alienated

the subset of our listeners who are gatorade enthusiasts well I'm a gatorade enthusiast I think gatorade before I do the swim stuff okay but like yeah gatorade is amazing okay okay coke cola or sprite was my pick yeah and I wanted something really refreshing and like chill and relax

yes so cola is that also but I wanted also something light yes and airy and because you knew you'd be podcasting with the firebrand himself kagan bright and box so you need to be a children relaxed yeah right right to count on all the I get it awesome I get it probably awesome

this so that's all right the last right you guys uh understood the assignment you did the homework I'm proud of you and the last few times I've done this I keep dropping the ball because I've actually been trying to cut back on my soda intake because I've gotten up to a ridiculous levels

it's just stupid but anyways today and I've done pretty well this this whole week but when I'm with my kids it's kind of party time so today we're having party time so I had lots of coaks all day right well I was so excited for the drink time on this but by the time like

but time it came time to pick something I'm like man I'm pretty cooked out I had a lot of coaks today so I'm gonna stick with the smart water so I'm just I'm just doing smart water pretty smart oh firebrand yeah yeah that's like that's pretty smart yeah that's right there it is

you know when you listen to land at the creeps and you listen to what they're drinking sometimes I think I think we're doing okay yeah yeah that's right you know pearls always drink and something like that Jay yes yes yes he's she's she's always rocking the healthy water brother no it you

know it yes he's such a good girl so one last thing which you reminded me of yes we're bonn and I are broadcasting from Utah where we live and of course Kagan lives here too but tonight you are broadcasting from a very cool location for a horror podcast brother tell it oh yeah man I

I am 100% doing this the right way dead serious horror movie challenge up at a cabin in the woods it is dark the crickets are going outside and there are wild animals on about end up so you're right you're literally at a cabin in the woods in his dark outside yeah baby that is so awesome

and I also turned off the lights in the room that I'm in the windows are open so you know doing her right yeah impressed all right well on that note we've got the right mood here so listeners we thank you for tuning in for it our top 10 horror movies of 2023 show you are listening

to Jay of the Dead's new horror movies the ultimate horror podcast all right here we go ready to start our top 10 and we're gonna let's do it son are you looking at my don't look at my notes I was actually the phone okay he's looking over my computer there's two

things right there he you both on your on your on your own independent computer oh yeah he's checking my really bad ten he's got his laptop there and he's got his instas with all his swimming honeys cinnamon messages and pictures and the bikinis and stuff just getting and then I got my

computer here but I just didn't want you sneaking a peek at number 10 okay yeah I want to ruin the surprise okay I do that that's right so Kagan you be our lead off batter tonight I just know that you're gonna be able to bring it with each round so Kagan's gonna start us off what is your

number 10 oh man the pressure of starting okay so I know I set my criteria at the beginning where I said you know favorite and best and this movie kind of hedges though you know it's it's kind of on that line between favorite and best because I think this is an objectively well done film it's

pretty well executed and it's mostly on my list for technical merits although I did really enjoy it and it may be a January film it was pretty early in the year but it is no one will save you and I have a prediction but Jay does not like this movie I just guess that maybe you don't but I'll

start off with it so you know how you have your special awards for each film well my my surprise tonight is that I was running out of time and so I literally had chat GPT write my film synopsis for me and I have it read and I haven't read any of them awesome I'm imagining that they're gonna be

really funny okay or just poorly written so here we go okay that sounds great no one will save you directed by Brian Duffield stars Caitlin Devar in a compelling lead role the film follows a young woman whose solitary life in a remote home takes a nightmarish turn when she encounters

mysterious extra terrestrial visitors as she battles with eerie phenomena and confronts deep seated fears the boundaries between reality and terror blur with its blend of psychological tension and sci-fi suspense the film promises are gripping and unsettling experience the key

to one edge thanks Chad GPT yeah that's right bring in the corn so no one will save you I think the reason I enjoyed this movie so much is because I think the alien subgenre doesn't get enough good films and I feel like maybe my favorite is probably fire in the sky off the top of my head but

um you know as a big fan of the ex files in the 90s I'm always so excited for a good alien invasion moving and this is pretty darn good the reason why this movie I think it was good enough to make it on my list was actually because of the score and it was unbelievably good I think when I wrote the

review for this I said if I was making a film directing a film this was the composer who I'd want doing it and this is Joseph Trepp and Azary or I'm hoping that's how you say his name but man this is John Williams style big orchestra huge brass and the music more than anything carries this film

I do think that a lot of people will struggle with this one because it has a very prominent gimmick in it with the approach that they use and it's kind of like that movie uh what was that Elizabeth Olson movie silent house where they tried to do the whole single take yes yes and that that kind

of made that movie not work for me and uh the gimmick in this film I believe is that there's no dialogue in it at all and it kind of works but then it kind of starts taking you out of it sometimes because you're you're like are they gonna break the rule are they gonna break the rule

mm-hmm but I think just because we're getting another solid alien film alien invasion film and because the score is so good I gave this movie more on objective scale of like an eight out of ten and I think it's a high priority stream on Hulu but if I were talking about this is kind of like a six

out of ten experience for me but it's an eight out of ten film excellent excellent you know I just got to compliment you on something this is your first time giving a top ten list on a podcast that was exceptional I love I love the way you did that brother some very impressed oh dude

excellent thank you so much that's very nice of you that's really cool yeah thank you so um no one will say we I just have one question about something you said there do you feel when there is a quote unquote gimmick in a film whether it was intended to be a gimmick or not do you feel like

it's passable as long as it comes off more organic and less gimmicky because like what I'm saying is if you watch a film like this and there's not really any dialogue if you feel like yeah well that works because in film xyz there's only one person and most people probably don't talk to themselves

so there's not gonna be a lot of dialogue right you know or there's the other side of that coin where it's like oh they're milking this thing and they're just they've just got a gimmick and they've got these rules and you can see the screenwriters straining to carry this along what are your thoughts

yeah I think well as you were asking that question I was kind of desperately trying to find a film with a gimmick like that where it works because I think you know the first time a film they tried to do a silent house on it was Alfred Hitchcock's movie rope and rope I remember the first time I

watched that I just became so obsessed with watching for cuts yeah as good as good of a movie as rope is like I love rope it became more about when are the cuts gonna happen and how are they going to do it yeah and so I you know you can kind of see you know how the sausage is being made a little

bit and I think no one will save you does absolutely suffer from mad and I think that she lives a solitary enough life this character in this film that mostly time it works but there are a handful of moments where there would be dialogue yeah and the whole time you're just like are they gonna do

it is they're gonna be is he gonna happen yeah and Jake can you think of any movies that are really gimmick based but it actually works off the top of your head no not off the top of my head like I mean nothing that I would take seriously you know like for example what what's that one

a movie where there's a killer tire is it called rubber yeah like yeah it's like okay well that's you know that's or a velocipaster it's like okay we have you know that's silly but it's like well that's kind of the point but not a serious horror film not off the top of my head anyway

interesting well we'll keep that roominating around and people definitely I think that's an awesome thing for people to comment on this episode if they think of something because I want to know yeah let us know is there a is there a good gimmick horror film out there

this spawn had a comment about what you're yeah but it says here that the tingler oh yeah it's from 1959 yep it's a price apparently it is a gimmick horror movie yes it is absolutely but do you remember I showed that to you guys do you remember that yeah it's freaky right

it's yeah and in fact I believe that was a William Castle production and in certain theaters they had the little buzzers in the seat so when the monster attacks in the world of the film for people haven't seen it people feel it in their spine yeah so in the movie theater when you were actually

watching this film there was like a little like buzzing that in your seat that was in your spine and people were flipping out and so that was certainly gimmicky yeah that's a gimmick yeah so that's a good example good googling there thank you absolutely yeah yeah from the king of

that's absolutely right the king of gimmicks himself mr. William Castle yes exactly but we love William Castle yes you know we do we do for sure because I mean that's that shows some heart I mean yeah the man wanted to make some money but I mean he's being creative doing it so a ray for capitalism

go ahead what were you going to say Spontan well there's also apparently a horror movie called gimmick from 2019 oh I don't know if you want to check that out I don't know if that's what you're into I don't know that one there's no description okay so maybe that's the gimmick yeah okay Spont number 10 brother what you got for us okay my number 10 pick it's called pick in this envelope okay yeah Godzilla minus one so the director is I'm gonna put you this Takashi Yamaziki okay that was

rough the premise of the movie so there's like some type of military operation going on not gonna spoil it right and then something happens like a series of events happen and then Godzilla is unleashed yes and then they spend a lot of the movie trying to contain this giant creature yes so yeah it wasn't my favorite movie ever it's far better than Skinner Meringue yeah right that's my number one that's a good good one okay it had Godzilla which is cool of course anything has

has Godzilla the story of this movie was interesting to say the least okay I'll just comment we saw it in the theater me and you and Gizbo yes and we saw the subtitled version didn't we yes so that was good that they had that uh-huh so we could understand what was happening that's right

ratings and recommendations 6.5 out of 10 and buy it if you find it kind of low priority low priority yeah so your number 10's a low priority rental yeah okay fair enough I'm just double checking I just want to make sure yeah okay gotcha there you go so that's his number 10 he says

Godzilla minus one thank you okay my number 10 receives the award for the most suspenseful horror film I saw in 2023 and Kagan you're not gonna believe this but my number 10 is no one will save you brother yes it is well here's the thing I do have some problems with it which is why it's knocked

down to number 10 but I mostly loved the first half this was released in like September 2023 on VOD was written and directed by Brian Duffieldous Kagan has told us stars I Katelyn Devers Kagan said a PG-13 horror film that's something of note for my main man here okay and it's one that I think

as I recall you could pretty much show the family I mean if you have kids that are 10 or up with listeners out there and you want to show a fun suspenseful kind of scary horror film but nothing that's like too insane or anything you know I think this is a great pick genre classification

we already talked about this is an alien suspense thriller horror movie and there's one more aspect of the genre that all explain here momentarily I'm gonna combine my premise of it here with an explanation for why I love the movie so much and here's what it is this is why I think people should

see this movie many if not most alien horror stories depict an invasion on a macro level or it's like this wide scale of like I think automatically of Independence Day not that that's horror but you know we get a lot of these or the 1950s sci-fi horror that Greg puts on his mantle you know we

get invaders from Mars you know but what I love about no one will save you is it kind of shows its alien invasion on a micro level at least for a lot of the film in fact it's so small scale that we we get more or less a home invasion film here where the alien has entered this girl's home and

she's just trying to deal with a literal alien intrusion within her home so yeah for me this is like a 7.5 out of 10 if I recall correctly I call it a must-stream and to my shame I just gonna admit this up front we did record a group review of this and I still have it it is just not released yet and I apologize to my co host we do have a really cool review of this movie coming up because a lot of us appreciate yeah so that makes sense because like I wondered I I saw so many people reviewing this

on letterbox when it first came out I'm like was this on the show so that's I'm really excited to hear what everybody thought of it thank you you know I love what you said there because like I was kind of looking back I opened up my letterbox review of this and it was like a freaking novel I wrote

so much about it I probably should have reviewed it before this but when you said that it's a very it's much more intimate look at invasion it's I wrote it's my favorite alien invasion films and science because I'm actually a big science man yes this fight it's problems but that's probably

the closest thing to know and will you will save you that I can think of as science mmm-hmm similar approach yeah I'm with you brother I dig that so yeah that's our both of us number 10 see we're we're in sync on that so very cool okay uh keg and what's your number nine

I'm excited about my number nine because it's my it's my let my hair down moment because I just I feel kind of trashy putting this on a top ten list but I just don't care love it it's hellhouse LLC origins and because like the thing is like I really I enjoy the first film

in this series and two and three I'm just like man these nearly unwatchable for me and this one worked for some reason I'll go ahead and give the old synopsis here hellhouse LLC origins the Carmichael Manor is directed by Stephen Cognetti who also directed the previous three this is kind

of his thing this chilling prequel to the hellhouse LLC series delves into the dark origins of the infamous Carmichael Manor set in 1989 the film that's not true see this is what kids need to learn this about chat GPT the film explores disturbing events that led to the creation of the haunted

house attraction known for its deadly consequences oh man when that chat GPT when a group of documentary filmmakers investigate the manners semester past and cover unsettling secrets and face terrifying supernatural forces that's true with a gripping narrative and an eerie atmosphere

we don't need to read the rest of that it's a found footage horror film that takes place in the Carmichael Manor and said and it precedes the events of hellhouse LLC and I do not believe it actually takes place in 1989 but man I think this whole franchise if I'm honest with you is based

off of one thing the clown yeah yeah it looks like oh my gosh the clown in this series is so terrifying right to me right and just like the way they paste this movie and the buildup they have of just like moving that clown just a little bit just a little bit I was just captivated by this I don't know why I think it just had for a found footage horror film it had a really solid build it played its card just right and I'm just such a paranormal found footage guy that when I watched this and it

wasn't a complete disaster I just really really had a great time so earlier in the year like recently semi recently on horror movie weekly we ended up going through the trilogy the the three movies I believe or we did the third one and so I revisited the first two and yeah like the first one is

pretty powerful and scary and then I remember feeling that two and three were just like more of the same so like I felt like they had a good concept in the first movie but by the time we get to the end of the first film I'm like okay well that was plenty you know like that they really stretched

that out to get through the runtime and then I was shocked that they did two more films but it sounds like what you're telling me is this prequel here which is technically the fourth installment does this give us something fresher because I haven't seen yes kegion oh yeah no this is a

completely different thing because nice I mean they really lean heavily on just that hotel in one two and three yes and everything takes place there and it has the same scary locations and the same scary things that can happen and this is definitely different nice you're in a different location

you're dealing with kind of a similar threat but being presented in a different way and I think it gets a little bit of the vibe more of like a some of the better paranormal activity movies okay really and there's some escaping into the woods that happens later in this film where they

go into different territory that the other films don't go into where some really creepy stuff happens as well it definitely has that feeling of you can't run away from the threat in this movie nice yeah and so I think this is you know I think it's a really just a good get creeped out sort of

movie disaddling and let the clown in this movie scare the hell out of you I love it nice okay well I'm so I'm glad to hear that because yeah I didn't give it a chance because I'm like wow we're gonna do a fourth one of these but now that I know that's a prequel and it's different yeah I'm

open to it now yeah it's I mean I ultimately gave it a seven out of 10 and I said it's a high priority rental for or high priority stream for fans of found footage so it's not a revelation you know it's not the greatest thing you're ever gonna watch right but I have a lot of fun with it

very cool okay yeah I gotta spawn I gotta shoot I don't think we've shown you the first hell else LLC and it's freaky dude yeah so you'd like it all right that's Kagan's number nine hell house LLC origins the car Michael Manor that's a wheel of fortune why did I do it right there

I mean Vanna be turning around those vows for a long time okay spawn of the bed what is your number nine all right my number nine pick is the last voyage of the demeter nice nice yes and the director is Andre overjarl so what happens in this movie is there's a cargo ship in

the 1600s or something yeah that's not when that takes place probably there's a container containing something evil and yes it goes horribly wrong yes and everybody is unhappy at one point in the movie right right I guess I love it why does make it was like fun bloody kind of watch

and it was like there was some cool aspects it was a long time ago so I don't really remember it's the hard thing about top 10 list huh yeah unless you get the Dave Z it and revisit everything yeah before the show right yeah he cheek no he he really does he really watches all of it over again

wow it was entertaining uh-huh and there was some shocking aspects to it yeah and reveals and stuff because we saw that late one night right yep and I remember we were pretty surprised because I was wondering if it would be kind of tame but yeah we were pleased with this yeah freaky vampire

yeah my rating and recommendations uh-huh seven out of 10 stars and uh high priority by all right so that's uh yeah spawn number nine is the last voyage of the demeter all right good big I enjoyed that one I actually reviewed reviewed that one on which podcast Jay I reviewed that one

with you guys though yeah and doctor shock yeah that um that was new horror movies right all pull up the episode yeah yeah yeah spawn I'm I'm with you you know I really wanted to rewatch it I was a little hard on it when it came out but I'm with you that it was it had some it didn't hold back

in some very important moments it got more intense than I expected but the thing that really blew me away about that movie was the production design yeah the costumes and like the the sets and this just looked historically back on yeah yeah absolutely yeah and that was episode 59

and you're right it was uh you and spawn and uh dockshawk and me and and yeah I remember we had a fun time talking about this and I like how this does some pretty hardcore stuff in it that you might not expect yeah which is really fun because there's a couple of good surprises in this movie so yeah

I dug it I was a 7.5 on this so how cool and uh Kagan Kagan you were a six at that time looks like yeah I think I was kind of rough on it but like uh uh vampire little stat my husband he and I you need to rewatch this one because he is a we can spoil what the precious cargo is right yeah yeah

that's too much of a spoiler right yeah that is the Ra cool so I think uh I think vampire little stat will dig this one yes it's due for a rewatch for me I'm with you that's good number nine pick brother okay we're here to my number nine let me see where my I get all these windows open okay so

this gets my award for the most disturbing film that I saw in 2023 so in some ways because in 2022 we had the sadness and that kind of talk that took that title yeah for everybody like that was very disturbing for people well this was that movie for me in 2023 and it is when evil alerts oh man

I thought this would be a lot higher on your list I know right this is a very this is a very J of the dead movie it really is brother so this was released widely available in October of 2023 finally it's a film from Argentina so it is subtitled in Spanish written and directed by

a Damien Harudna and it is not rated but it would be a strong r rating particularly for violent graphic and disturbing content here's the premise to be honest I actually found this film a little difficult to follow when it was all said and done which is really why it ended up a lower on my

list because I'm yeah initially I was just really over the moon with this but story wise by the time it was over I had to be honest with myself and I just didn't understand everything that happened and things that it's weird the consistency of events in this film is the best way I can say it

but what we got here is a supernatural horror film where evil befalls and it flicks the people of this this village and I mean it afflicts them in very severe cruel brutal and disgusting ways I do need to revisit this again but to be honest I haven't been in the mood to revisit this because

it's got a lot of darkness to it but I'm still I came in at 8.5 out of 10 on this I said see it in the theater and buy it and you can hear our review of this film in episode 77 that was our monster Halloween special for 2023 glowing disco eyes so there it is when evil lurks okay guys. Geagan what is your number eight?

my number eight is a movie that Jay the dead brought to my attention and it is when evil lurks awesome yes so yeah I don't know if I need to give too much more background on this other than yeah the director did it's terrifying or not to be confused with well no terrified terrified.

it's not to be confused with terrifying which I just did which I really liked terrified uh-huh and you're right this is a really upsetting film and it has some shocking deaths very shocking yes and it is one of those you know when one of those old school Jay the dead he will find the

the little candle in your soul and blow it out sort of movies it's really it's not a good time but I'm with you because this is you know that I love this because it's I would consider this folkloric horror and one of its strength slash weaknesses is that it has it sets up rules

of things that are supposed to be do's and don'ts but this one has seven rules which is like you know the gremlins have three rules when evil alerts you have seven and it's like don't use electric lights don't stand close to animals don't take anything close to them

to this thing and don't hurt them and you're like don't call evil by its name or and you're just like okay hold on hold on what was number four yeah I write that down really quick right exactly exactly but I think maybe one of the best things about this was the there's a performance by

the lead characters son who has autism and it is extremely well done that and some of the other perform I don't know if I've seen autism performed in a film better and I think we looked it up and the character the actor didn't actually even have autism but just really good acting but not a

fun time and I also gave this an 8.5 out of 10 and I said buy it it's a you could buy it but it's probably a little too awful to watch too much yeah right I know it's like I bought bone Tom Hawk but I've only seen it once yeah yeah yeah because it's too gnarly right yes it goes there

doesn't it when evil hurts yeah that's a good pick so far our list our lists are pretty in sync there okay oh man I know yeah we well this is amazing okay crazy times good pick brother case bonnet dead what is your number eight okay so this is kind of for reasons you wouldn't expect

tell it it was the five nights at Freddy's movie okay I'm not even a five nights at Freddy's fan I'm not even like in that social group at all any learn near that but yeah just because of one of the actors Matthew Patrick he was an actor I thought you're gonna say Matthew Willard oh yeah

oh yeah no no Matthew Willard Matthew Patrick because he ran Matt Pat yeah Matt Pat Matt Pat and I'm very familiar yeah he ran multiple YouTube channels and they were all really great and he was in this movie and that's mostly why it was good but other than that that was really fun yeah

that was fun oh it was directed you oh sorry go ahead I'll stop cutting you off I have no question for you though when you're done um the director was Emma Tammy case wanted to know uh-huh okay what's up yeah have you shown your dad the original Matt Pat film theory video with the

Chuckie cheese theory I don't think my dad would have wanted to see that I might have found it he 100 I 100% think that first film theory video that Matt Pat does with the Chuckie cheese theory is scarier than the fanathe movie okay we gotta do that because it's real life horror yes

dude Jay I'm telling you I mean the Chuckie yeah yeah oh buddy because it's creepy because I was gonna say the Chuckie cheese video the Chuckie cheese pizza alone is real life horror I mean that that stuff is serious bad it's flat and I'm just saying but no Kagan's Syria Kagan's not

messing everybody okay I want to so you're saying it freaked you out when you lied okay okay I'm going to I'm gonna text you that video so that you can go watch it okay okay nice yeah that's not all I'll watch it with you yes yeah we're in we're in for this okay so what what do

you rate that one then this one it was an eight out of 10 and a low priority buy because your kids will probably want to see it okay if you have some eight-year-old kids and if you're okay with them seeing like very small amounts of violence then this is for them I remember being kind of

surprised that some of the stuff that happens in this movie was stronger than I thought and what was really cool is in episode 77 you were on spawn and you reviewed this with Dave Zee's daughter Frankie Zee and she reviewed it with us and Dave Zee that was really cool yeah that was very

enjoyable all right I remember listening to that that was great five nights at Freddy's yeah it's a spawn of the dead's number eight okay well here we go this next film has my award for the most film art quote unquote film art horror film because it is artistically and technically beautiful

this is the kind of film that could potentially you know if the academy ever gave horror or thrillers or whatever you want to classify this as if they gave them their due this is something that should have gotten academy attention but didn't and it is the pale blue eye oh wow did you

see this one keggan no I knew there'd be something that you know I tried to catch up on a whole bunch and I didn't get this I didn't get to this one brother put this on your list and watch this little staff oh yes this one okay this is yes this is streaming on Netflix and this is one of the

January 2023 releases Christian Bell yeah the years started strong here and so this was co-written and directed by Scott Cooper the director who also did antlers and a non horror film out of the furnace one of my favorites that's filmed in Mount Zool West Virginia crazy heart black mass hostels

that dude he really gets me in my eyes good atmosphere and developing a sense of place and mood in his films but yeah this has a stacked cast spawn was saying it there it's got Christian bail it's got Harry Melling who is a very trimmed down slim and trim Dudley Dursley from the Harry

Potter series and that dude's performance is fantastic he is excellent in this he actually plays Edgar Allen Poe which I'll talk about more in a minute you got Toby Jones you got Charlotte Gainesburg you got Lucy Boynton you got Timothy Spall you have my all time favorite number one

actor Robert DuVal and you've got Jillian Anderson sculley herself yeah this is rated R and the genre classification I'll just state this up front many people would not call this a horror movie and that's fine because it is a murder mystery thriller and to me it's horror I think it's gothic

horror and we do get I just want to say this that we get some of the creepiest most unsettling corpse scenes like there's some coroner type what's that called when the coroner is doing the the autopsy yeah thank you like autopsy type scenes that are some section yeah some of the most

disturbing I've seen honestly at least for me in a movie so you know like I said gothic horror murder mystery and here's a premise Christian bail plays a detective who is a commission to investigate the gruesome murder of a West Point cadet but he's having trouble getting a

foothold one this particular case until a young brilliant mind by the name of Edgar Allen Poe starts to assist him so guys I'll be honest with everybody right now I have often lamented and even mocked historical fiction when they include historical figures and they're introduced

into fictitious narratives like the adventures of Abraham Lincoln vampire jiggle oh you didn't know I was gonna say vampire jiggle oh Abraham Lincoln because that's one that's one of them but no I I have to admit right now though that the the historical fiction post story here works and it's

actually very cool I think everything in this film is hitting on all cylinders to use a cliche technically excellent casting excellent performances and yeah this is one of those movies that I think could have swept the academy awards for at least five to seven Oscar categories no joke

but they would never you know they turn their nose up at this stuff but I'm just telling you listeners for you film fans like centafiles like Kagan you're gonna love this thing it's fantastic it's very macabre it's perfect if you're watching it with someone who isn't necessarily like a

full blown horror fan but they enjoy murder mysteries and stuff like that excellent so I gave this a nine out of 10 I called it a must see stream and on Netflix and you can hear our review in episode 41 of Jay the Dead's New Horror movies so you add that to the watch list Kagan 100% yeah no I

remember hearing somebody do a review of this earlier this year and I can't remember who but I was really excited to watch it and I remember going to ask was that and I'm like hey are you gonna watch this thing he's like I already watched it so oh what do you think did he

comment on it you know he was kind of hard on it I was kind of surprised oh okay but you know it's completely my speed though because I love Gothic horror yeah everything that you're describing sounds like something I would be in for so it is it is on the list mm-hmm good good absolutely

that's awesome all right so um that was my number eight so we're down to your your number seven brother what are you that Kagan I guess what well I'm kissing your butt it's another Jay the Dead recommendation oh seven I heard about movie first from you it is cobweb oh yes yeah

move cobweb directed by Samuel Bowden I believe that's how you say his name we're just the feet one of the other themes tonight we're just gonna butcher all the names so here we go let's do it it's a gripping psychological horror film that delves into the unsettling and mysterious

the following follows an eight-year-old boy who begins to hear strange and disturbing noises coming from inside the walls of his family's house yes as he struggles to uncover the truth behind these eerie sounds he discovers unsettling secrets about his seemingly ordinary parents with

haunting atmosphere and tense narrative cobweb explores the themes of fear and fear sorry I just love some uh chat gpt descriptions but anyway I'll shout out I'll shut up about this it's not that funny I was giggling when they when these were popping out but no I actually think the parents

in cobweb are one of the scariest parts they they are acting in this really bizarre way and you you don't ever really trust them but the best thing about cobweb for me is the Halloween vibe that not a lot of movies really nail and this is nailed so like hit so well that this is a worthy of

Halloween night sort of movie absolutely and I think that this would be just a good group of friends movie as well it's just it's a lot of fun the ending the sort of reveal the twist I guess I'd say might be a little absurd to some people but I say to strap in for the ride and you're going to

have a lot of fun it delivers pretty hard and it's it's got a fantastic atmosphere so for me rating wise I come in I come in a little lower on this one than Win evil lurks I gave it a 7.5 but I think it's so much more fun than a movie like Win evil lurks and again I know these episodes are

going to be coming out closer to Halloween this is a perfect October movie so I say it's a high priority Halloween rental that is cobweb good win yes yeah and you mentioned that the parents are scary yeah because the dad is played by Anthony star I'm home lander from the boys that dude

is terrifying just from that role I have an association with him but um yeah I'm back healing this good pick good pick all right thank you so spawn of the dead what is your number seven no sebo oh sebo okay the director is lore can been again and it follows this woman who goes through

a threatening and unnerving series of events and eventually it ends very poorly I would say yeah it's like the reason this made my number seven spot is because it's actually scary in some parts not just boring right and the plot was very not what I expected throughout it was always not really

following what I thought it would do which was interesting mm-hmm and I liked it a lot it's got some surprises in it yeah man so did you see that one Kagan no sebo I haven't even heard of this okay oh yeah it's crazy it's it's pretty cool it's got a ava green and mark strong in it and um yeah it's a it's a cool one yeah we had fun watching this didn't we yeah man and to my shame again

I know I'm pretty sure I think we reviewed this with dr. Schrock and this is one of the ones that has not been released yet my apologies to my friends um I'm making notes of this and I'm getting these up to the top of the release list everybody but anyway did you have a rating on this one

just one yeah it was seven out of ten stars uh-huh and a low priority buy like if you see it a target okay get it yeah even though target charges like forty five dollars for it oh it'll be like six or probably yeah I just had a discount yeah yeah target is not good at selling well here's

the thing I saw and I know this is way off track but in the end of Jones dial of destiny and on it I think it was on DVD it may have been blu-ray either way it was 45 bucks y'all do in that movie what that movie is that that movie is a snooze fest I could not believe my eyes screw target

forty five dollars for you I almost I may have taken a picture I was so appalled I'll have to look okay if I did he's just he's calling out target if I did take a picture all post in the show it's because I don't think people believe me but it's real it's real it happened

to not know anyway sorry about that so no seabot no seabot okay go to walmart walmart's way better oh yeah all right there you have it I like how you picked some outside the box that was pretty interesting very good okay so now we got um my number seven and keep losing my spot okay here it is

so this gets the award for my favorite quote-unquote monster of 2023 and I'll just say it up front I'm gonna get a lot of grief from Ron Martin and the other horror Avengers on this one because I was actually kind of tough on this during our review but my number seven ended up being

saw ten whoa really yes yeah goodness I know everybody's like what what okay so this released I'll explain this released this September 2023 was directed by Kevin Grouter I always think he's French or something maybe he is and he directed as well saw six saw 3d and I always plug it when I

get the chance jackals a must own everybody 2017 all right yes anyways this stars and I'll only say one name Tobin Bell is jigsaw john Kramer and of course of course and I know people are like what how does saw ten have Tobin Bell in it I'll get I'll tell you so this is rated R of course

genre classification full blown horror and some people say torture porn but I've never liked that designation but anyways the events of saw ten take place between the first saw and saw two and some people call this an interquel like a not a sequel but an interquel and that's another

stupid term that I just got and I'll tell you something Kagan and spun if I find out who's making up all these annoying dumb terms that aren't even words probably probably tragedy PT I'm going to stick them and I'm gonna stick that person in a saw trap anyways basically we get a he said

whoa get it we get a story here about john Kramer as he tries alternative methods for dealing with his terminal cancer and as is common in the saw films the judgmental john encounters people who run a foul of his values and therefore must play the game to learn a thing or two so why have I

had kind of a a turnaround on this film well everybody knows I am an apologist and I love the saw movies kind of like a fool in some ways I mean I love I don't I don't think that you I don't think people who like the software and I should be seen as a apologist in any way okay good

just really watch them I only think there's one of them that's rough in my opinion I think they're solid films good good which one's the rufflin to you seven okay okay okay we disagree on that no that's that's fine that honestly anytime if anybody you know gripes it like any of the

last you know for whatever I'm like okay well you know fair enough I I because I see I see the complaints but it's it's one of those things where it's hard for me to even admit because I have so much fun with these and as Ron Martin always teases me as soon as that theme music plays that

zeb song mm-hmm do you want to me I want for you baby good a brother I am and I am in when that starts playing I'm so in I wish I could find the text that are on Martin wrote the other day because I was I was ripping on a Blair Witch from like 2016 and yeah they see like that he does

he yeah he does actually and I was really tough on that one and I said something about I don't know they were talking about the ones of kind of a director's cutter some some Blair Witch remake or so I don't even remember and I'm like all that'd be great maybe they could actually show which this time

and and run Martin like whatever j if they just start playing saw music you'll love it you know I'm like yeah that's true anyways I don't know why I went into all that story you guys by well he makes it it's the power of music man that's real that's one of the most iconic pieces of

horror film music ever written yeah Ron Martin take that so I it is true I did have some serious gripes about this movie particularly the way that John Kramer is treated oh I'll just kind of leave it at that but the guys they have talked to me ad nauseam about this and it has softened it

a little I still love it but I have come around a little bit on this and I do love that we get to spend so much time with that character and that's what's really cool because usually most of the saw movies are about other people and he's kind of just you know he makes a brief appearance

into that yeah yeah but this is kind of about him in many ways so anyway I did rate it like a 6.5 out of 10 and I was mad when I saw it but I I bet you if I rewatch it now I'll I'll feel a lot better about it I think my rating will go up and you can hear our review of this in episode 69

so that's saw 10 or saw X if you insist just being the voice of the Dave Z who isn't here I think on the second watch this is going to go up a lot for you I did see this going up at least a full point for you yes I just predicted this especially because of your love for the franchise

and I think even though you know how they handle that character I don't think you're wrong but I I think overall the film was kind of a love letter to that character I really enjoyed saw X 10 whatever you want to call it right socks yeah I think I'm gonna look at it that way more and more

you know over time and I bet you yeah the next time I see it for sure all right Kagan thank you so what is your number six oh man my number six this movie was like made for me I love it and if you remember do you remember when we reviewed that movie ghost watch yes oh man the BBC fake like

Halloween special where they tried to trick the audience and to think that something really paranormal was happening yes well my number six is basically something like that it's late night with the devil and this is not a perfect movie but oh my gosh I had so much fun with it I love

this movie this is directed by Cameron and Colin Karrings brothers I assume and it stars David do you not say his name Jay oh it's David I don't I'm sure I butcher it so anything you do is good David Dasmalkian that's pretty good that sounds good all right so set in the 70s this film is

centered around a fictional late night talk show that takes a turn when a guest psychic medium performs a live say on okay so this character basically has like a Johnny Carson knockoff competing show and he kind of has like a downward spiral after his wife dies and so he stages this Halloween

special to try and get ratings and it turns into a sort of supernatural spectacle where the audience doesn't know if it's a real or fake the people producing the show don't know if it's real or fake and it's set up as if this is all playing out kind of in real time which I really enjoy movies do

that as well but and the sort of person who likes to sit down on YouTube and say like show me these top 10 videos of like the most scary live TV events like I love watching stuff like that and this is kind of like the Halloween supernatural version of that and this is another film that is

set on Halloween night and if you're looking for a new film to watch on Halloween night just to try something new you could do a lot worse than late night with the devil see what else I've got written about this not a whole lot other than what I've said it's just it's not a perfect movie I think the ending kind of goes off the rails a little bit but it's it's a lot of fun I think the production design setting it in the 1970s is generally convincing and is nice to look at and I gave it a 7 out of

10 high priority rental but it's a buy for me yes it's a late night with the devil excellent excellent pick and just for the list there's a little side note in case people are wondering we all individually were 100% free to use our own criteria for deciding you know which year film is from

and on IMDB this is listed as 2023 for me I just wanted you to know how much I back your pick this is a very strong consideration on my 2024 list but oh but I'm just saying was the US really when was the US release of this well it was that the thing it was in tons of US cities don't

worry I won't push my insanity on you because I have neuroses about this but you it says 2023 and that's fine because it was it various festivals in the United States like it looks like seven of them throughout the end of 23 so brother it's totally a good pick yeah it wasn't wide in the US

until March of 24 but but I just wanted in case people had questions about that and I didn't want people to be like jeez jay how come you didn't have late night with the devil on your list because it's a great pick so I just all of this to say I back you brother it's excellent pick and everything

you said about it I agree 100% actually I love what you said about yeah it kind of goes off the rails at the end but you know it's still awesome yeah and for and for the record I actually you know were I stricter you know if I were more hardcore and I was doing top 10 lists every year like

you were I would have probably been more diligent because I generally ascribed to the same rules that you do which is US release date because you have to have some way to coordinate the madness yeah so so that just kind of slipped for me so I guess that just means late night with the devil

get to be on my list next year too yeah if you want yeah do it brother I love that pick it's excellent and I can't wait for spawn to see that one I don't think he's got to see it I saw that in a theater with grizzly gusts and we had a good time on that one all right so that's

excellent number six pick for kegdon and spawn of the dead what is your number six sorry did you guys hear that yeah is it really wow is that okay that was the well yeah the pineapple juice glass is not okay and I'm sorry if you guys are hearing me moving around I got the creaky

as furniture I just hope you're okay I was like nervous that an axe murdered no no no man huh you know just you keep in the glass breaking and then I'll go silent for a really long time there you go okay make the listeners really wonder sorry spawn it's all good apologize no I'm sorry um

dark harvest directed by yes David Slade in a small town they do something far more sinister than Halloween every year and the reason this movie made my list is because it was very interesting and the ending was good I liked the ending uh-huh and I can't really say very much about this movie

because it would be a spoiler I bet right but it was really good lots of interesting concepts that I would have never thought about yes I rate this a 7.5 high priority rental yes and there's a brief appearance of a pig-headed horror mask in this oh yeah it's very it's very brief it's

not really part of the film but I want you to know too um this was in contention for my top ten list so so listeners yeah if you haven't seen dark harvest I get a back spawn of the dead's play on this you should definitely check that one out it's really cool keggan I don't know if you're there but

did you get to see dark harvest by any chance no you guys are really populating my watch list which is exactly what these lists are great for so uh I'm excited to check this one out you're gonna let I think you're gonna appreciate it because it's another one of those fun at Halloween kind of

watches because it's got you know the cornfields and you know all that all that fall what's the word I don't know it yeah yes yes it definitely feels like a Halloween movie so yeah do it rather cool dark harvest I'm in so good pick and what did you said 7.5 on that yeah spawn good okay

all right that was his number six and so we're going to go to mind number six oh okay so shout out we've just we brought up Dave Z a lot on this show and I got to give him a shout out again right here because he actually brought this film to my attention and I like to try to give people credit

and as much as I can remember when I learn about things so this gets the award for the worst movie title on my list I don't like the title of this film but it also gets the award for the most pleasantly surprising film of 2023 it is called candy land candy land and I would have never

watched a film titled candy land if Dave Z hadn't had reviewed it and told me all sorts of great things about it and PS I would have called it lot lizard so if the filmmakers out there I'm sure they don't care what I think but if you do a blu-ray something special release one day maybe change

the title a bit shall sell more of this but anyways release date this is another this is in fact the first week of January release on VOD so this came out in January of 2023 is written and directed by John Swab and most of these people in this film you won't know necessarily

except for William Baldwin but I must mention a standout performance by Owen Campbell he plays Levi in this the mpa rating this is listed as having a TV mature rating so I guess it would be an R rated equivalent for sure and genre classification candy land is a slasher film among other things

and it does have some surprises and I'm just going to leave it at that and as far as the premise you get the small group of prostitutes you know sex workers at a truck stop and everything's going fine for them with their business dealings until some maniac begins praying upon and killing

the sex workers and again I just want to re-emphasize I was pleasantly surprised with how this turned out it has some brutality it's a lot of fun for a modern slasher it does it right and I love where this goes in the third act because we venture into some other horror sub-genre territory that I

personally love so I give this a 7.5 out of 10 and it's probably a strong rental for most but it's one of those films that I actually ordered to own because I think it's kind of special and I don't want to lose track of it and you can hear Dave Z's initial review of this on episode 41 and then

over on horror movie weekly Mr. Watson and I both micro reviewed it in episode 132 which coincidentally Kagan is when we did all that that Hell House LLC talk that we were referring to earlier one other Kagan note that I forgot to mention a little bit ago Kagan referred to Ghostwatch when we covered

that on horror movie weekly that was episode 143 Kagan was a guest and we had a blast on that so I'm gonna link all this stuff in the show notes and Kagan's people haven't caught up with it because there's a lot of fun nice so that was fun and I remember I can't remember I feel like it was on

when Dave Z initially presented this that I remember you talking about not wanting to watch it just because of the title and I get you and looking at the poster too I this is actually one of those posters I'd look at and say nah right but like you know what a great premise for a slasher film I think if this would have come out you know like say 1982 and it was called like truck stop or something like that was I would have been well and here's what's cool and I've said this somewhere but I'll

just say it again I guess because of my naive nature I didn't even know the term lot lizard until I was at a truck stop somewhere and they had some kind of bumper sticker or something and I'm like what is a lot lizard and yeah there are in fact people who are sex workers they work at truck

stops and they tried to you know hook up with truck drivers who are feeling lonely when they do their little stopovers and in fact one little one more little PS on this is I was in Salt Lake City at one of the few remaining movie stores that had $5 movie racks and I heard some lot lizard action

like they were talking about kicking one of these workers out who was in the bathroom with a truck driver for a long time so yes it even goes on still in Utah but anyways I think that lot lizard would be like a hundred times better title or even truck stop like you said then candy land because all I

can think about is that dumb board game so anyways I agreed so there isn't I will my as it was that I watch a lot of judge Judy and cops so I know what a lot lizard is yes and listers that's why he knows don't worry yeah because of the that's right the real crime

all right here we go we we do what introduces this is a new episode no you're going great so far just go ahead just keep on going just you know take over the whole thing since I'm I've done I've done most of the talking on this one anyway because we're in my countdown with Kagan

and spawn of the dead okay okay so we are back with another giveaway for some prize winners for the top 10 or moves of 2023 we are of course in the episode with Jay Kagan and spawn so the rules to win don't forget kids must be 18 or older and must live in the US unless you're macula so

first giveaway is the movie when evil lurks all right and the winner is parl with a C not call with a K because he's on Jay's other show and I'm sure Jay will give him something for another giveaway that jerk isn't getting anything no carol of the sea and C in this case stands for

carol of course that is a blue ray carol okay so very cool oh and speaking of C's Jay speaking of C's okay we have a special extra winner here who's not a host but probably feels like it assuming he even not didn't give up on the show long ago john C oh yeah we we purchased another

Jan gal DVD for you because he already won like six years ago when this podcast started but then apparently that copy got lost somehow yes which we feel really bad about but I just went I want john C to know that my Amazon account told me when I purchased this I'm not lying

it said you already purchased this two times before which is like sure you want to do this yeah and that's not even true because the original time on HMP so it was technically my fourth purchase of this and I just want you people to know out there and I'm sorry to say this now because we've

been buying it so much apparently it's gotten more popular or they think it is and so the price is raising on to and gal DVD the spirit of con red brooks thanks you the estate the state of con red con red brooks thanks you that's right all right well so there you go john C and we apologize

that the first one was apparently lost yes and this one well one of these days you'll get it yeah all right so we're back to you brother um keg and what's your number five oh man we're getting into the meat top five good stuff yes this movie this movie when I saw the trailer for this

movie I was like oh I don't know how this looks terrible overhead lighting it's one of those everything takes place in the same room sort of movies and I'm like that can be good or it can be very boring the man in this movie the dialogue so good the acting so good it's essentially a stage play

and it could completely just work on stage and this is Brooklyn 45 this is kind of the same crew that brought you uh there's nothing to be called we are still here yes yes yes yes I don't know Ted Guggen Guggen Guggen Guggen Guggen and Larry Fezendin is in this as well

that's the director anyway so this has it starring Anne Ramsey and Jeremy home as well as Larry Fezendin and it is set in 1945 and it follows a group of friends who gather in a Brooklyn apartment for a say ounce communication with spirits of their own loved ones from world war two and uh most

the people in this cast are well the characters are people who were involved in world war two in one way or another all in very unsavory roles doing things that are very inhuman with the mentality of the ends justify the means with things like questioning Nazi prisoners and torture and it kind

of imbues that whole sense of post-war paranoia and uh discriminatory feelings that people had towards all German people after the war and I think we're in a time where I think world war two inspired films are kind of ramping down a little bit compared to how prominent they used to be

uh-huh but I just thought this was a really interesting take on you know post-world war two paranoia and uh even like post-traumatic stress and uh this all manifesting in this single set supernatural say ounce setting and uh just the performances in this are really strong and what I was worried

about in the trailer is true this is one of those things where you can clearly tell they shot this whole thing they probably rehearsed it in this one room and then they probably shot it in like a week or something with static overhead lighting for most of it so it looks like you know

some of those tv shows where they just have typical regular overhead lighting but there's still some stylistic moments in this that are really good but man I was pleasantly surprised and impressed by Brooklyn 45 and I gave it a 8.5 out of 10 uh weird designation I've

ever in here low priority buy oh nice okay there you go it's still a buy you know so yeah yeah totally you know I wanted to see this one because I like this filmmaker I I follow him on Twitter for a long time and I like we are still here and so yeah you say his name you know one time

I looked it up because he gives I've seen him give people grief and like I think somebody was asking him for something and he's like okay um I will if you can pronounce my last name correctly I guess so so I think I hope I'm not misquoting but I had looked it up before and I honestly forget it now

how it goes but I remember one time I remember thinking oh that's actually a lot simpler than it looks it's like something like yeah gay again or gay again or something like that but I'm sure okay I'm sure I've yeah totally butchered it again but anyway sorry Ted but I like Ted's films and

Brooklyn 45 I'm glad to hear you talk about this because that that makes me that makes me really curious because I was wondering if um this is something I should get to at some point buddy it's all about the dialogue uh-huh so it's not like art house cinema it's a good dialogue film

so if you approach it a little less like it's a horror film and more like I'm going to watch a great stage play with dialogue that just moves at the plot nice I I would I would look at it that way okay yeah Brooklyn 45 and it's so interesting to me that there's that comedy TV series Brooklyn 99

and this is called Brooklyn 45 it's like yeah what is it with this Brooklyn two digit numbers I don't know I know I don't think it's a particularly good title honestly because when I Brooklyn 45 I'm like is it 45 people no I believe it's referring to the year all right so that's

Brooklyn 45 and that is Kagan's number five nice yeah okay thank you Spawn and Dad what is your number five blood blood okay tell it okay um the director is Brad Anderson and in the movie a mom with two kids moves to a farmhouse and one is bitten by a dog and gets infected and something is

horrifically wrong and then the situation evolves and it turns really grim and it's awesome and so fun to watch and this movie made my list because it is actually kind of scary and kind of what happens and I don't really remember much about it but I remember it being good there's multiple

tight and like suspenseful and no biting scenes and like the depths that some of these characters go to for semi good reasons actually yeah it's kind of sad that's a great way to say that well done yes oh yeah made it an eight out of ten and buy it if you see it for real it's high priority by

that's my boy me me proud that's a great pick Kagan have you seen blood no it was on my short list of movies to watch and prep for this list and I did not get to it okay yeah it's the one listeners with Michelle Monahan out there so yeah making note of this one okay that's blood good

pick for Spawn of the Dead's number five nice okay and then that brings me around to my number five okay this gets my award for the most haunting movie of 2023 it was the give me that little cold shiver that kind of stuck with me and for much of the year it was my favorite film even though a few

of my friends on this podcast kept beating up on it with some of their stickler details but I have to confess they did have great points so they kind of cooled me off on it a little bit because some of the critiques are definitely legitimate but this is Cobweb oh yeah this was great from 2023

oh yes yes yes so this has a release date I got to see this in theater actually in July 2023 it was limited release but it was playing near me and then it hit VOD in October directed by Samuel Bowden and yes Kagan has mentioned this one because yeah this was everybody this was Kagan's

number seven pick and a great pick it is so he he went through the stars and stuff so yeah rated ours genre classification mystery thriller horror I'll just leave it at that and then yeah I would describe the premise really you know it's really simple and scary I mean the fact you

got this boy who hears knocking and whispering behind his bedroom wall I mean it makes him very nervous obviously and he tries to you know he's scared of it definitely at first and he soon learns that his home holds a dark and sinister secret and one big reason why this film worked for me is

because I just how much it creeped me out I saw this at the late screening one night and when it was over I was pretty much in the theater by myself sitting up in the back row and I had an uneasiness walking out of that dark theater and I'm like well I can't believe how much this film got under my

skin on that first watch and I have watched it a couple of times I've seen this like two or three times now but I and I still love it I still love it and I think what's happening here especially in terms of this this fit like with the parents and the household I think it's alarming and it

affects me on this primal level I gave this a nine out of ten I said see in the theater and buy it and that is cobweb and you can hear our review of this in episode 61 of J the Dead's New Horror Movies okay did your score change at all after watching it at different times no no no I kept it at

the nine because I appreciate it a lot but I mean it it could probably come down to an eight I mean I could live with it down it in eight after like I think it was Watson Watson definitely had a really good point in Dave's the if you other the guys are like hey wait about this and it was a

technical but also a very fair complaint about this film and away in which it kind of falls apart but I'm not even going to say it here because you know part of where I'm coming from is if people haven't thought about what's wrong with this film and you still enjoy it you know ignorance is

bliss man so just let me let me let me live let me live in the bliss you know so anyway there it is oh yeah okay Kagan what's your number four brother you are the cipher of the horror Avengers that's a name from the matrix right yeah yeah so yeah I really enjoy cobweb and I stand by what

you're saying there and even though I rated it lower than you because I am nitpicking probably the things that other folks are picking up on I just think it's a ride yeah it's a lot of fun yes so just just have fun with it it's great absolutely so people are gonna nitpicking for this one

a little bit because I think of everything on my list this is the one where people would challenge if it's a horror film or not but for me it's a science-gone wrong horror film and it is birth rebirth okay and this is pretty upsetting movie and it would be a I think it would qualify for

doctor walking dead sort of analysis of are we dealing with a zombie or not and I think letterbox synopsis of this is very short and great a single mother and a childless mortgage technician are bound together by their relationship to a little girl they have reanimated from the dead

this is mostly a drama I would say and it's really held together by the two stars in this which are hold on hold on maran irland and judy reyes so maran irland people will remember from a lot of other horror films including another 2023 film the boogie man this even king adaptation

but she was also in the dark in the wicked and the empty man and she plays what could be considered a highly functional like potentially autistic hyper analytically minded person who is just obsessed with her goals as a scientist then you have judy reyes who is sort of the I don't know I didn't

really spoil it with a letterbox synopsis I won't say exactly who she is but people might recognize her from scrubs but man these two performances these two ladies carry this movie so well it's got a lot of heart and it is also got some pretty upsetting moments of body horror so

it is if you're not into a movie that is you know mostly drama because I would say this is like 85 percent drama and 15 percent horror so people be warned but this is a very well-buddy film and it made a pretty strong impression on me and I gave it an 8.5 and I wrote I don't know if I

would buy it but it's good enough to buy it all nice yeah you know keg and this is this is a really interesting pick because I'm excited just the fact that this is one of those experiences for me every once in a while I'll look what's playing in the local theater and there will be a

movie I've never even heard of and just for whatever reason it's in the theater and this was one of those so I actually got to see this in the theater oh you did yes I did yes so I'm with you and um and once again ashamed to say here's the thing listeners we've released a lot of stuff I mean

we're over a hundred episodes out and then you know a lot of these episodes are long so even though I'm being defensive right now there's a review I did of this and in Dave Z did a better review so there's a take one and a take two of this that is not released yet but it's but but keg I know

that helps people zero zero percent I'm so excited it makes me excited as a listener and oh because it is like I said I recommend your show to people and then you're like oh my hell this first episode nine hours long and I know I don't know isn't it great and so I think the only

people who are bustling your chops are probably your your fellow co-hosts yeah I'm just happy happy as ever when when something drops I'm I'm just so excited oh thank you that's nice that's nice but I also feel your pain as a musician who's not putting out music on the schedule of my

fans with a free who would want so I understand both sides yeah that's something we we both cry ourselves to sleep at night with but back to your pick though I'm impressed that you picked this is like spawn pick in nocebo I like outside the box yeah 10 picks and so this is a really cool

pick and yeah there's a scene in this where I'm like whoa whoa yeah like seriously so very cool absolutely would you kind of agree with that drama the horror ratio that I mentioned though 100 percent brother yeah and I'm I'm sure in my review I was like running my mouth about how it's

mostly drama but still you're you're fair you were 100 percent everything you said was representative of this film so's a great review and yeah Kagan nailed it okay so spawn of the dead what is your number four brother ooh okay cemetery bloodlines oh wow okay like I'm at the

office like with one of those envelopes every time I say I'm a movie title yeah we are yeah okay we're directly we're getting slap happy now I put I put Lindsay Lindsay because I forgot to check Lindsay just lamb Pearson beer okay yeah that's there we go thank you for like yeah

Lindsay I got you in beer yeah he's got me thank you I don't know why I just wrote Lindsay I probably got distracted or something that's weird you're like oh it's good enough yeah my friend Lindsay directed this okay go ahead it's a cemetery movie so you gotta know what happens in

the nose I couldn't really find a premise that didn't have some aspect of a spoiler in it okay so I didn't write anything on a premise it's a really great movie like good plot it's from a classic series but it's different than the other ones of this series that I've seen it took a much

different turn and that was interesting and fun and new for pet cemetery and oh my it's I mean it's a little bit of a prequel right because yeah it tells the story of Judd Crandal the old man character who is their neighbor it kind of tells the story of when he was younger yeah right okay

oh wow I didn't I didn't know that's what it was it's that it is Judd is a younger man yes yes it is but but it is a prequel to the 2019 remake version not the 1989 now once again I just want to say this recorded a review and actually really proud of this review because it's got some

and I don't want to pat ourselves on the back too much but this has got some hilarious observations because we were kind of picking at some of this film this does the neatest funniest thing in it I'll save it I'll save it but I love that you chose this because in my family we love pet cemetery yeah especially the 89 version because it's freaking scary but yeah so I'm excited that you picked the pet cemetery flick cool yeah it was 8.5 and a high priority buy just one more thing I have to

say uh-huh that sometimes dead is better that's right that's right it's right well done yes you nailed it okay so that was fun pick pet cemetery bloodlines all right I think that comes to me and this is my number four this is my award for the scariest oh I love the thing that you do a

word for the film thank you of 2023 and I just want to say I knew from the trailer that this one was gonna probably make my list and it did it's my number four and it is evil dead rise oh nice this hit theaters is least in April 2023 and I believe once again I saw this is my good buddy

grizzly Gus shout out to grizzly Gus have you met him yet keggan grizzly Gus I have not no no he's here local in Utah with us and um and he's the coolest guy so we gotta we gotta all go see a movie together all of us but anyways this hit VOD by um June of 2023 this was written and directed by

Lee Cronin and it stars Alyssa Sutherland wow whose performance is so freaky that I would honestly be afraid of her if I saw her in real life even with no makeup even if she's not in character because I am leery of this actress now after after her performance in this this is rated R and

it's a strong R because not only do you have children in peril but children are in terrible terrible predicaments in this and Kyle Kyle Bishop Dr. Ongadette is always so disturbed by how much that amuses me and how much I love that in the order but Kyle come on you have kids you know how it is

that but anyway I'm just kidding um genre classification is supernatural hardcore horror and here's a premise basically the dead eye curse is summoned and befalls a little family in this condemned high rise apartment complex in the city and so you have this demonic and destructive entity that

constitutes the evil dead praying upon and dismantling a family and it is precisely when they are vulnerable and so say it with me horror happens to those who deserve at least in this right brother but seriously keg in this film scared me and it's it's rare for horror films to

like trouble me to this extent and I was pretty freaked out since I was grisly gust that night you know I had to try to act cool but I was actually pretty freaked out of this movie and not only was the monster makeup and the performance with the elissa southern and character effective

but I'm also a sucker for when parents are the monsters and that they're praying upon their children his children are so vulnerable obviously and parents are their first and last line of defense typically in the world and so when you get a jack torrents or you get the situation that

we have in this movie it's just extremely upsetting and just as jaws ruin the people in the ocean and psycho ruined people in the shower evil dead rise has ruined looking through the people for me anytime I have to look through the people I am very very uncomfortable and upset and nervous so

this is a nine out of ten for me at the time I said see it in the theater and this is a buy and you can hear a review of this in episode 61 of j the dead's new horror movies there you have it okay scary stuff scary stuff keg in oh sorry I was I was beautiful saying all

I have to say about this movie it's the it's a g-r-a-t-e grant you know what I mean yes yeah bad joke anything I like uh so this is this is the one that I think I just just spoilers this is the one that I think people will grill me for not having just because I need a second watch on it I had a

rough theatrical experience with this one did you I I had some talkers oh usually this sort of person gets up and says something but I spent about 30 minutes getting frustrated I finally got up and said something like walked across the theater and then I spent the next like 20 minutes being

anxious about it so my evil dead rise experience was amazing the little ruined so I need to see it again oh I'm sorry yeah well the funny thing about that listeners if you don't know keg in he's very buff and um you know he I'm sure that they were in the fruit broot yeah he has a broot and I'm

sure they were intimidated when you walked over it said shut up right you know I was very very polite but I could tell they were a little I don't know they respected what I asked I was like if you're going to talk we please whisper at least you know and they did so that was nice

and where you like but if you're gonna continue to talk I will eat your soul I should have oh my gosh that would have been if somebody would say that to me during this movie I would have just I would have died of because I was already pretty freaked man anyways I should have gone over

and done the face that she does through the people you know the oh I can't I can't think about it it'll it'll get to me okay it is pretty upsetting day of the dead here um just real quick it just need to pause in this episode because actually listeners believe it or not as you're hearing this

we needed to take a break from the recording because everything you've heard thus far we were having a blast but it was getting late and we needed to we just didn't want to short change ourselves we wanted to have plenty of time to go through our top three of the countdown so Kagan how long has

it been since we recorded last well when was that two weeks wow I think it's been two weeks two weeks that's right okay so from what the listeners were just hearing it's two weeks later and a lot has happened in that time but I'll just not sell it by saying we had intended this evening to go

to a horror movie together all of us that see the new Americanized remake of uh speak no evil and we didn't get to because I stepped on my damn cat accidentally I love cats don't be mad animal lovers pita I'm nice to this cat we're very close she just in the dark and she's like lying

in front of my feet and I didn't know and I stepped on her and apparently I heard her pretty bad so we had to take her to the emergency vet situation spawn was here he can attest that she was hurt and injured I wasn't trying to dog innocently yes I wasn't trying to dog out on the movie and

everything but the kitty is okay nothing is broken she's just a little mad at me I'm getting the yeah I'm getting this thing guy from the cat lately but that's fine and I just want her to know that spawn and I missed the movie with Kagan and in the vampire list that so we we missed out on that

but listeners of new horror movies and we will actually probably hear the review before you hear this actually as I come to think of it I don't know I don't who knows on this podcast I mean Kagan it could be six years from now that they're hearing this we know now but anyways Kagan has promised

that we will have a review of the new is it speak no evil I can't believe that's right okay freak it's like here no evil see no evil okay speak no evil there's all of them there's a yeah no horror film here no evil from the 80s and then yeah and it's a popular saying but anyways

everybody's like where's the last three count now I know I know but we're gonna have a review coming of that with us even though we didn't get to see the movie at the same time so let us resume once again with the top 10 horror movies of 2023 as told by Kagan the fruit root brighten box

spawn of the dead and J of the dead okay Kagan what is your number three well I just want to say really quickly to Dave Dr. Sharkbecker who really doesn't like cat jump scares and horror films that apparently cats do come out of nowhere it's true and man for the listeners dealing with all

of our Tom Foulry getting on to the top three just remember we have had to wait two weeks to figure out what each other's a respective top three's are so I've been dying so it's only appropriate that I kick off my number three here with a movie that I got to see with Jay and

Spawn my number three is the first iconic slasher that's going to be living through the ages for a long time it's the movie we should have gotten in the 80s but we finally got it and I'm just happy it exists now it is Thanksgiving by Eli Roth yes and this to me was a nine out of 10 immediately when

I walked out of the theater I bought it as soon as it came out and watching it again it held up just as much for me the kills are great it's got the perfect tone of a holiday slasher very fun and very rewatchable which is exactly what you want for a holiday and you will rewatch so

it was so much fun watching this movie in the theater with you too and um well how poetic right like because that was the first time that you get you and Spawn got to meet and and it's cool that we ended up just coincidentally doing the top 10 list together

and we saw that together so that's really nice yeah yeah absolutely it's a great it was a great film from last year and uh people should buy it rewatched every year you said something fascinating and I um I want to ask you about this because I think it's a really good point you said that this

is the slasher that we should have gotten in the 80s yeah a Thanksgiving themed slasher and absolutely why Kagan why did we not get this until now like why didn't this come in the 80s if you're looking for like a real reason I don't know I really don't know there's probably

somebody smart who knows that but it just seems so bizarre that it's such an obvious idea especially with all these tertiary holidays like you know father's day or there's probably an arbor day slasher that we got before we got a we are gonna we are gonna do that you're

scoring you're scoring that there is an arbor day yes and I've said this many times and one of these days somebody's gonna steal this but but the slasher killer is gonna be Uncle Butch yeah and he's gonna kill with a edge trimmer slash weed whacker oh man you know that sounds like

a good idea some of the performances might come across a little wooden oh I like that humor you're welcome for that but I don't know I don't know why we didn't get Thanksgiving sooner but I would have loved to see this come out and you know 1982 or something what would have been a

hell of a movie especially since so there was Halloween and then we got Christmas horror really I mean of course there was a black Christmas back in 74 but even by the time we get the 84 and everybody was griping and they were like you know really throwing hissy fits about a silent night

deadly night right and um all that stuff it's like it just seems obvious and we already had my bloody valentine for valentines day so it just it had been begging to be made so I just want to throw that out there absolutely I completely agree with you all right well that's an excellent pick so

thank you so kegans number three is Thanksgiving okay spawn of the dead what is your number three all right my number three is the Pope's exorcist oh yes guess what what it was made in 2023 oh what is wrong with you hey hey hey I have a technically 2023 movie on here if we go by

American releases so I say go with it well we are going the 2023 top 10 right now so that's a wait wait wait oh I'm sorry I'm confused okay well the listeners are like it's no wonder jay jay's been releasing 2022 countdown and and now you're recording 2023 and we're we're all

working on our 2024 list so it's all my fault kegans and is that is it because I am right in the middle I know I know like everybody's like this is so ridiculous what's wrong with this guy and yeah do you have anything else to say about it son other than it's released in 2023 it was

directed by Julius Avery okay and basically what happens no spoilers is this priest of course because it's an exorcist movie it says it in the title goes to a house of someone and then something goes horribly wrong of course yeah this movie made my list because it's actually kind of

disturbing and it's it was really fun and it was scary it had a really good ending I thought and some great I wouldn't say action because it isn't really an action horror per se yeah but like not like Tom Cruise action but like right yeah and that stars as the the titular Pope's exorcist

it starts Russell Crowe and the fact that an actor of his caliber is in the proceedings here gives it some gravely toss right as they say yeah and what I like about this spawn is it's based on the actual man a real person father Gabriel amorth who is who was he's deceased now but he was the

exorcist the lead exorcist dude for the Vatican and fact kegans did you get to see that documentary on that flicks for a long time it was put out by William Friedkin of all people the director of the exorcist it was the devil and father amorth did you see that one kegans I can't remember if

I've seen it but I know what you're talking about yeah it's like 2017 and sorry spawn just a little tangent here is that they actually had a William Friedkin did this documentary footage of the real father amorth in action doing an exorcism on a woman who was supposedly actually possessed

and for a long time I had to kind of work up to it I'm like I don't know if I want to watch this but I did of course and I was very surprised at what I saw it was a little freaky but you know how the voice split the like people talking a demon voice and it has the split where it's like half

normal voice half demon weird voice yeah that actually happened in this film and I don't know if that was done in like a post-production effect or if it was something that this person can actually do like those singers a kegans who can split the note yeah or or two been throat singers yes thank you

I knew you had no but that was or you know what it was called or if she was actually possessed by Satan like I know no I know no but it was really freaky anyways so the fact that this was based on him yeah and Russell Crowe was playing him I think that was really cool so I back you brother anything

else you want to say about that sorry about the tangent everybody um when me and dad saw in the theater and it was really cool because like the carpet with yes let's talk about the theater carpet what he's talking in his top 10 list of 2023 he wants to tell you about the carpet in the theater

it was really cool okay spawn I if you're into carpet I have a movie for you it's called the shining oh yeah oh yeah oh that's what I was thinking of the carpet in the movie theater reminded me of that movie oh it was full circle there we go I had a picture of it yes

on my phone for like a month yeah that is a true story he took a picture of the carpet because of how much it reminded him of the shining carpet yeah but Kagan here here's something for you as a fellow Utah man up in Ogden Utah and this is for people who might visit Utah or live near here

there's that haunted hotel in Ogden Utah what's it called oh yeah I know what you're talking about I'm gonna try pull it up here yeah it's very storied yes it's of course it's got a haunted room associated with deaths yes and I'm trying to remember what the name of it is because I need to go

stay in it is it the big-a-low hotel that's right okay wait wait wait are you done that that's that's the one in downtown Salt Lake now okay no I want the one I want the one yeah I see a picture of it here and it's calling it the big maybe you're maybe you're right that just doesn't ring about

anyway let's they're sorry okay so there's two decodas the moment you know two decodas like south Dakota North Dakota let us know there's two hotels I was the same the listeners are gonna kill us absolutely irrelevant there's also two carol you're right you're right Jay is the big-a-low

I'm looking at it and I apologize it is the big-a-low you're correct okay that's fine that's fine thank you yes there are two decodas anyways so the point is we went there for a haunted evening it was like a double date situation with a spawns mom and in another couple and we went it was really

interesting and the I'm telling you and I'm dead serious the carpet in that hotel was very close to the shiny remarkably close and then on an upper floor I'm not lying I took a picture of all this I have to find I don't know where but there is like this weird mysterious group picture in black

and white from a distance very similar to the picture in the shiny and I was starting to freak out a little bit you're like maybe we should leave yeah it was really weird oh anyways everybody's like top ten list I've been living in breathing the shining theories right now so don't you

get me started okay well are you going to the big-a-low we have a whole episode I'm 100% I will I'm going to stay there you know I spent my 30th birthday in room 217 at the Estes part and the Stanley Hotel in Estes Park the rumors Stephen King stayed when he was inspired

to write the shining that is that is the room I am a fanatic when it comes to those things so I will go stay in the big-a-low hotel yes we actually stayed there and you know but otherwise pretty uneventful but like it was you know we did watch some forensic files of course some murder shows

but oh yeah what else you're gonna watch in the hotel that's right I mean this you know married life is exciting so anyways um yes so here we go that was spawns number three anything else you want to say about the Pope's Exorcist or South Dakota what do you rate the Pope's Exorcist

okay yeah that's a good thing to get to finally eight eight okay eight out of ten yeah and then what do you tell people to do if you see it by it okay it's a buy okay low-bye low-priority buy it okay low-priority buy it what would you say what face would you use no I love that I

did a good job good job does really good third why very nice okay thank you all right so for my number three this would get my award for the best horror cinematic achievement best overall filmic achievement in terms of technical filmmaking and I would say it would be the most Oscar

worthy in terms of Academy Award type level of 2023 and that is Godzilla minus one wow yes yeah okay not only Academy Award worthy Academy Award winning mmm correct well yeah I mean or that you know they're gonna probably turn their nose up at it but I think it should be right

I this could get this could win it did did this already did we already have the Oscars for this yeah remind me what it wanted for you it got nominated for best visual effects which is Takashi Yamazaki you directed the film and oversaw visual effects and this was the first time Toho had a film

that was nominated for an Oscar and it won it oh good I know I have almost zero recollection of this so this is awful my mind is gone anyways I'm glad to hear that thank you for the reminder so yeah even winning even won so that's really happy news now the other thing I was excited to

mention about it is I noticed that this is finally you can order right now the 4k or the blue ray yes and the title will be released on November 19th 2024 and I have already pre-ordered mine so just a little more about it thank you for filling in that Academy Award information that's

I'm very embarrassed that I didn't even remember remember that at all oh I got you yeah thank you thank you so yeah this was released in theaters like December 2023 and if people didn't catch it then it took a long time for it to be streaming on VOD like not until like August of 2024 and so this

may actually still end up showing up on some people's 2024 lists and there's also a black and white version that became available of this as well did you end up catching the black and white version keggan no I have not okay have you seen it no no but spawn gizmo and I saw the you know

the regular color version in theaters and that was really awesome and as you said co-written and directed by Takashi Yamazaki it was a fun day it was fun and of course since his Japanese film subtitled in Japanese mpa rating PG 13 horror movie right here oh really yeah PG 13 yeah and this

is a monster movie of course which is why I put it in my top 10 this white's eligible for my top 10 of the horror yeah just saying because some people are like really good and like yeah dumb dumb it's a monster is like dumb yeah right I don't know people are like it's like yeah it's a monster movie

anyways premise the title Godzilla minus one refers to the lowly state of Japan after the US dropped the atomic bombs on Nagasaki and Hiroshima so that took the country down to zero then Godzilla's attack took it to minus one which leads me I get it now it makes me I have to say this again though for the record given that that's the case I think that's a cool title everybody but it should have been titled Japan minus one right not Godzilla minus one yeah yeah yeah we're not I'm with you

on the title okay but yeah so anyway aside from that this is the story of a kamikaze pilot who fails to do his duty and commit the ultimate sacrifice on behalf of his country but he survives to see the dark days to follow where Godzilla and he irradiated reptilian lizard attacks the country and it's

darkest hours finally we get the heart of an actual character driven story here everybody that invests in the characters for once because a lot of times as we know in Godzilla films they just end up scattered and it's it's really not about the human beings that you just want to see the guy

in the suit but this is legit heart to this movie and I think that this preserves the original inspiration of what Godzilla is all about and that is the fears created from the dawn of the nuclear age so that's always been really chilling to me because it's like okay if you're going to

make a movie a cinematic depiction that reflects your fear of having an entire city destroyed by something monstrous well Godzilla is a literal city destroying monster so that's that's just really kind of chilling and upsetting and sad to me yeah which is why this monster's always been

so powerful in a lot of ways our boy macula he is very passionate about Godzilla in case people don't know and I just want to throw it out there he claims and I if this might be true he claims that he is the biggest Godzilla fan on the podcast so I don't know maybe he might be he might be

anyways I just want to say and I'm sorry I I feel like I'm Mr. Taken guy talking lots tonight that's true that is the whole point thank you I'm just so used to our boy Carl Huttleston over a movie podcast week Kagan will be podcasting on there and we'll be like 20 minutes in and

Carl's like okay well we need to get this moving because we're only like in the many rupees and I'm like dude that's what we're here for is talk about movies anyways I know I'm with you I when I was talking when we started doing this I was just going on and on and on and I'm talking about

talking about a movie and I getting a little self conscious I'm like well actually that's the point of this yes yes I mean it's not like we don't have video right now where Spon could show you the map of the Carolinas boat that they're two states two states there right yeah going and touching

on that and I really appreciate hearing your perspective on Godzilla minus one oh thank you that's nice I'm enjoying it that's like I'm also enjoying it I think what it is guys is I'm feeling a little insecure and self conscious because I stepped on a cat today that's what I was

gonna say yeah I just feel like a terrible human being stepped on a cat and now I just don't feel I'm kind of the Godzilla of my apartment well let me let me just oh yeah I mean something up for the viewers I mean the listeners what so the cat was on a chair her favorite spot

in the whole apartment on a chair and then dad went in a room and then the cat got off the chair went right in the doorway yeah in the walking area it was dark really dark because he had the stuff over the window yeah I have a very dark curtains in my room because it's

that's right and yeah and the cat was right where my walkway as well she can freaking see in the dark but I can't see in the dark I'm not an irradiated thing yeah so like I'm just saying anyways I stepped on the cat like Godzilla steps on so many hot dog trucks okay here's the ending of this

and people are so glad the other besides the technical prowess that's manifest here in the special effects we have a genuine jaws like suspense baby right the threatening nature of this monster's attacks are palpable and so that's why for me Godzilla minus one is a 9.5 out of 10

Dave Z and it's a must see in theaters so even though it's not in theaters right now it's what I rated it and this is a total buy it and that's why I pre-ordered it you can hear our review in episode 82 and then my little snide remark to Dave Z here he gave some fair complaints I have

to give him some credit because the man as always has some points he's very persuasive so I would encourage if you love this movie and you'd like to grapple with it with us then take a listen to that take two review with Dave Z in the crew so I think you appreciate it so all right

Kagan if you're not I'm dead of old age or asleep would you give us I'm curious I am really I am really curious to know what Dave Z is saying about it because I don't think I've listened to that I don't know if I've talked to anybody about Godzilla minus one who had well actually know that's

not true I actually mentioned this at work the other day and a couple of my co-workers came for it they had some critiques but yeah anyway time to look for a new workplace look exactly oh my god oh man all right should I go on to number two perhaps yes yes please by all means

well my number two is a it's a real head banger of a good time and if you see it you'll know what I mean it is talk to me oh I get it oh my gosh those scenes oh baby yeah talk to me probably had me squirming out of my seats more than anything I saw in 2023 and just to remind people because I

don't think it's come up on anybody's list so far am I right I don't think so did you did you all did yeah not so far I don't think we've revealed it so far so I'll I'll go ahead and just say the film revolves around a group of friends who discover a way to communicate with the dead

through mysterious hand and what begins as a thrilling game soon turns horrifying when they inadvertently invite malevolent spirits into their lives as the supernatural forces become increasing the level at the group must confront their worst fears and find a way to stop the

terror before it's too late so yeah this is an Australian film and I would say it's my kind of this tends to be mostly my brand of horror the kind I most interested in where you have a paranormal mechanic that's going on but really that's for me is kind of secondary to

what the characters are really going through and the lead character in this story is going through grief and trying to grapple with the death of her mother in her life so it's it's a lot about loss and it falls very much into the category of some of the other great horror films like It

follows where it can be read in multiple ways what's going on I think a lot of people can read this movie as a commentary on drug addiction I think a lot of people can read this as a commentary on social media culture around things like you know social media challenges that are

dangerous for one's health but I think the reason why this one really rises above is because the threat in it is very palpable it's very violent when it comes about and the ending of this movie also doesn't mess around one of my favorite aspects of talk to me is how they handle at one

point in the film what death would be like what the afterlife or limbo would be like in the way they deal with time distortions in that I find really fascinating yeah but yeah the Australians don't mess around and talk to me is maybe not as hardcore as other things I've seen out of Australia

but it was incredible talk to me is my number two I gave it a nine out of 10 as well and it's a buy excellent oh that's a great pick yeah that was freaky I remember I appreciated that so much that um spawn wasn't with me initially that weekend but we ended up going and I took him to see it

so you could check it out it was cool we had a lot of fun all right well great pick I got a back on that and I just what I love most and this is probably because I'm just a curmudgeon is that it does have that societal or like this sociological parallel of the various internet culture of

challenges and the things that young people whipper snappers can do and they get together and I'm just get egging each other on encouraging each other and how dangerous it can really become as you said keg and you said it very well that's my favorite aspect of that film so great pick brother

all right spawn of the dead what is your number two you'll never guess that's right that's why we asked you for it's a wonderful knife good guess it is skin emerge just kidding better not be skin rank I'm just kidding talk to me oh whoa no way yeah it's really cool wow tell it it was

directed by Danny and Michael billip but it doesn't end there after fill up it's like filipot or so yeah and then so the way you described his name was it doesn't in there wait wait okay while we're derailed for just like it and I have a story good for it just about last names okay so

for last time I made such a big deal about the director it's last name of Brooklyn 45 yes Ted so I made a point to go look it up oh well never ever forget it because it was something that people called me in high school it's Ted Gagan anyway go ahead small his name is pronounced Gagan

that's right I didn't know that wow yeah it's a Galaic name and so it's got all these extra letters and by the way if you didn't catch it Gagan is not a nice name that I was called so anyway right but we make jokes about it now right right sorry no I'm glad to know because I always like

I've seen that dude comment many times about the way people massacre his name and I always wanted to be the one of the people who got it right so thank you for clearing that up now now I'll just I'll just think of my friend Kagan and I'm like that's right it rhymes with Kagan it's

Gagan okay there you go I looked at many videos so yes it's Gagan there you go all right perfect okay so now we have to look up Danny and Michael Philipo well it's Philip but then it goes on from there it doesn't in there it doesn't in there because there's an oh on the end so one could

assume maybe Philipo maybe or Philip oh maybe all right onward upward it's on both of our number two so they can't get mad at us that's right yeah so I had the same kind of premise description it becomes a trend to do a ritual with a hand statue thing and it gets kind of dark darker than

you would expect that's right or maybe can you say children in peril children in peril you're right that I was okay I didn't know that you're gonna do your Kylo Ren for us but thank you that was good good good so to me this movie seems like the kind of movie that you'd watched like on a Friday night

fun like with a group of friends yes maybe yes better also horror fans and then I liked how you guys said the dying and time dilation or whatever yeah Kagan how did you describe that you describe it very well I said distortions in time but I think the the way that time is perceived differently

in the afterlife yeah I thought that was brilliant yeah I thought so also agreed and I thought it was cool just like the design of the hand because like for months after every time we'd be in like a store I'd take a picture of like a mannequin's hand and then I would send it to dad and be like

talk to me yeah and then and then he got real wise and cute and he was like dad talk to the hand get it there you go yeah cuz like that's the sequel cuz yeah you know you know that 90s or 80s or whatever that was fresh and was big oh yeah that comes around for this oh yeah talk to the

hand cuz the face don't care that's right that's right and then in one of those terminator movies the terminator slasher movies yeah yeah like no in Arnold Schwarzenegger like takes yeah the slasher killer yes the t800 yes excuse me good he's like no and then he like kills him or something

remember that scene in that movie I don't remember that scene dude we watch it on my room with the TV and stuff oh did you you know how I made you that lawn sign oh brother that is gold I'm still trying to figure out how the listeners can enjoy that I could just read it I don't know if now

is the right time but I guess I guess I'm also just a good primer for that is that I think it would be really fun to do a line of merch that trolls your audience yes so like I just came up with this brilliant idea to do like the Mount Rushmore of Slasher's and it's like Freddie Jason Michael Myers

and the terminator that's right that's right and it's see everybody okay well as soon as he finishes talking about this then we will we got to tell people keg and this is a true story I want everybody to know that this whole thing was your design because it's just totally brilliant I think

so yeah if they wait to our let's tease it for after our number one announcement and then if you have time if you could read through those including your new edition that would be great okay you got it sorry spawn we're always goofing off well that's the fun that's right okay so go ahead

I was derailing by teaching people that terminators a slasher go ahead eight eight is that you're raiding that's you're raiding talk to me as an eight yeah hey that's out of low by no it's a high by and I'm saying that wrong you guys keep laughing at me well I don't know if Jay like if you do

Jay's really strict rating system you would just say it's a buy I think the high and low priority are only on rentals so calling something like a higher low by is just it's I think that's what I'm laughing at well well but I don't know it's true here's a thing ever since macula joined the show

and he's like this is a 5.397 fair and high it's like dude just anyways but you know that's how he rates it and that's how he rates it for real in his life and I'm like Mac that's how I'm gonna write it in the show it's because that's important to you it's important to me so since Mac

does it that way you can do high by low by medium priority by rentals it's just like Mac it's in the Mac but if it's a buy in my opinion this is my opinion nobody asked if it's a buy then that's like you're going through with it okay but it's also like what if you don't go to Walmart

for like a year and then you don't get it in the five dollar section and it's well it's that's that's like a low priority rental but you said it was a buy but you never bought it well if it's a buy it's a priority it's achieved priority status then you go above that to do like double

priority okay Jay I think there needs to be different categories of buy oh my is this like is this like first run full price buy is this bargain bin buy is this gas station 99 cent by no I see I see what you're saying there I'm just trolling you know no no I can say I can see

where people would be like what makes me laugh is um sometimes that we'll say and it's yeah probably shouldn't even go into this because everybody's hating my guts right now but like for example I like you for example one thing that makes me smile is when people will say yeah this is like a

medium priority rental and to me that's just a rental yes just because there's low priority rental there's high priority rental so therefore I don't need to say medium priority that's just extra sell of all just say rental that's just me but like that that makes me smile and I love people who say

that well I think they miss a lot of person that like sorry guys are your ratings of movies and how mathmatical it is and part of why you take that's so cool that you take it so seriously like I think on your headstone there could be like a book like a stone book with all your movie ratings in it

and it's like nine through 10 is a buy seven and eight high priority rental am I am I wrong no yours I think that I think that your recommendations of how to acquire the movie are numerical yes that is true that is true but the problem is Kagan everything you're saying is true but on my

headstone it'll say here lies Jay of the dead who had all this ridiculous criteria for rating a movie which is why he has no friends who come here to the grave anyway I'm just I'm just saying where were we anyway did you rate you said eight I just said eight and you said hi by okay can I

give my number two finally I said do it okay so all right get it my number two on this top ten list this gets my award for the most fun horror movie of the year it was a 10 out of 10 for sheer delight for me and I probably loved this film the most it is a new annual classic of 2023

this was initially my number one for most of the year and I do feel a little bit of guilt that it's my number two at this moment Greg Immortus always says that Greg Immortus will be down on look at me making all kinds of friends right here but one thing I love about Greg is like he'll

be down on his number five and he'll be like this should be my number one oh yeah he says it all the time and I'm like he just did that on on the most recent episode you dropped yeah yeah on our number five picks of 2022 Greg Immortus is this should be my number one I'm always like why don't

you make your number one but I know the answer already is because Greg loves these freaking movies so much he wants them all to be his one anyway spawns raising his hand like he's in school what's going on so speaking of Greg Immortus on the day of recording he posted a really cool video yesterday

that I watched and so yeah you should go check out his channel because he's awesome yeah his video channel he was reviewing was it an unboxing something fox a fox he does all these like movie reviews and stuff yeah his video channel's awesome yeah and I agree he like unboxes these really cool like

movie packages like PR or something so yeah there's full moon legacy collection volume one blue ray box set and then nice hunt from Ronin flicks unboxing so nothing about fox but flicks okay cool thank you I will link that in the show notes in case the listers aren't familiar with Greg

Immortus's online work you know what else um Kagan in addition to that I don't know if doctor shock used to do some cool video I'd like to see him get back into he did some videos where he go around and towards collection and do stuff like that I love when the guys hop on and do video

stuff yeah totally anyways yeah so we're we're off on so many tangents well I want to know I want to go back to your number two because I thank you I know what it is yes that you do that it's your fault for bringing up Greg Immortus yeah I know I know we got on a tangent yes because I just

like to alienate all my beloved co-host no I'm just kidding I do though relate to Greg Immortus here because I'm like this should be my number one but I have something a little more deserving for number one in my opinion but as we said already the first time at Kagan's fun met we saw this

together my number two is Thanksgiving 2023 yeah and this is a co-written and directed by Uly Roth stars Patrick Dempsey Rick Hoffman and others rated are so horror slasher mystery here's the J the dead premise that I wrote after a black Friday riot ins trago saying thank you after that ins and tragedy Thanksgiving inspired slasher killer begins to terrorize Plymouth and Massachusetts that sounds really close to the IMDB premise but anyway here's why I put it here Kagan we wanted this

for years as everybody said since 2007 especially as we saw that fake teaser trailer so it was like 16 years that it took once we finally got the film that was inspired by the comedic outrageous trailer it became a very fine slasher flick in its own right and I love how with the premise of this

it has that classic structure that's exactly like my bloody valentine actually because if you if you kind of compare those films the premise is very similar to the way yeah structured so that's that's so cool to me because I love both versions of my bloody valentine but agreed it has a lot

of Thanksgiving associations which by the way is my favorite holiday so that's another reason to love it and um excellent Thanksgiving horror film let me see what else I wrote my notes it's one of the mo and it's weird but it's weird to call horror films fun but some horror films are fun yeah

this film is completely fun yes I don't it that's the word I would use to describe it yeah and in fact every time I've heard somebody review this or talk about this film they just keep saying fun as we have all night just over and over because that's the best way so it's probably I would rate

this as the most fun horror movie I have ever seen maybe yeah I can't even think I'm trying to think of what would be more fun to me I don't know I might have to qualify that better but I'm with you though because the the thing that's really miraculous about it is you know I watched

Army of Darkness yesterday for the first time and that movie's a lot of fun but like it's really hard to say that I would sit down to watch that as a horror film experience and Thanksgiving is so fun but it never feels like anything other than horror yes it is a slasher movie and the

horror is hardcore but it is fun the whole time well said and I love how a reason I think that it is so affecting to us is that it captures that magical holiday spirit and that that sounded so trite what I just said but I think if people really get outside the words of it and when you're

feeling what it's like to watch this film it does remind you of like being off on Thanksgiving break getting to see your family and friends running around and the cold weather the football the food the the front I mean just all of it is there and I I feel like they've captured all of that

as well as the things that we love about horror that's captured it's almost like a recipe and they've also got the ingredients of elements of 80s slasher film yes so like all of these ingredients are blended in and mixed in and baked to perfection here I wasn't even planning to do an

analogy like that a food analogy but that's what I'm going to do I'm just going to go with it so this is this is a nine out of 10 for me I say this is a total buy I wanted to jump in and say well I was I was about to start laughing because when you were talking about it's like a great

recipe it reminded me from Bruce Almighty when they're like a community is like a great cookie but no I think what are the you brought up another really cool thing about Thanksgiving that I didn't say I there which is that I think the move that we all expected Eli Roth to go in based

on the trailer was that it was going to be a retro film that was trying to recapture the glory days of the 80s and while it is structured very similarly to my bloody Valentine and it's paying homage in a lot of different ways to those holiday related films of the 80s it also

is paying homage and is very actually more tonally similar to something like scream but it also exists in the time that it is made because the characters are very Gen Z not obnoxiously Gen Z I would say but like slash movies are tend to be about younger people they tend to be about teenagers

and people in their early 20s and I think one of the miracles of Eli Roth Thanksgiving is that it kind of exists in its own time and still manages to feel like a slash movie from the 80s and 90s yes absolutely yeah I mean and it's like how did he do that but he did he did right yeah yeah so

that's a great point anyways um I just love this movie I couldn't possibly love it more and you can hear our initial review in episode 80 which was titled a very special horror holiday special 2023 so I hope everybody will give that a listen if you haven't already okay we are now

to the moment of truth we are here for our top number one horror movie of 2023 what do you have Kagan I have a film about a character that went into public domain for the first time it's a slash movie it is a supra it's 20 the food blood and honey now I'm just kidding we it's fun

and I actually like that first one the second one not so much by the first one yeah I watched it it's like he's like no comment I I couldn't get past the visual effects the blood was so oh man anyway but you like hammer horror right you're gonna tell me that no buddy like the at least the

the blooded hammer horror films is like on the screen like a character and winning the food blood and honey will turn their head to the side and like CG blood will shoot out like something I could have done in Photoshop it's a nice nice anyway no I and I really enjoyed one of the food

blood and honey but it's actually not my number one okay and my number one has already been mentioned on both of your lists so I feel like I'm in good company and it is Godzilla minus one oh Takashi Yamazaki yeah with uh I can just say it's my favorite Godzilla movie I've ever seen period

even probably more than the original as much as I really revered the 1954 classic it's a masterpiece but I don't really know what to say about it other than what Jay already said you know it is character focused it's about a suicide bomber kamikaze pilot who not suicide bomber excuse me a

kamikaze pilot who does not fulfill his duty and kind of lives with the guilt of that in war torn Japan and the thing about Godzilla minus one that's kind of a miracle is that it has such a powerful emotional core to it with all the characters that it's theme of every life is precious is honestly

tear jerking there are moments in this movie that you're like whoa I'm about to cry in a Godzilla movie I'm really moved by these characters and even you know where that kamikaze pilot story arc goes at the end apart of me my initial response to it was like oh that was that was cheap

because you know a lot of movies will do kind of moves that feel like you've been slided but it works with the theme of the movie it works with the overall storytelling goal and uh uh it's just it's really powerful it looks great and uh I'm always being obnoxious

winless that wants to watch a movie and I always want to watch kind of like if I want to watch a Hollywood movie I like to do it from the 90s because they have kind of this this class to um 90s Hollywood like action films before before CGI really took off they still had to be like

really story centric and uh this for me has like that perfect and that feeling where it's still a big studio picture but the characters and the story really grounded and this for me I'm like off this is what I wish movies were still like like I wish I could go to the megaplex and see

movies that were more like this um so Godzilla minus one it's a 9.5 out of 10 for me and it is a buy it I will buy it and I'm so glad it's coming out yes finally right yes forever yeah so let me ask you you already addressed how you feel about this one in relation to the OG original what do

you think of the uh shin Godzilla I love shin Godzilla okay now it's a totally different kind of movie like you have to like Godzilla minus one is a much more satisfying Hollywood well I holly I don't know if I would say Hollywoodification but just like it's a very satisfying movie

it does the things you want a movie to do shin Godzilla is a political satire first and foremost and I think if people go into it expecting a Godzilla movie who they've just watched like good Godzilla king of the monsters or Godzilla versus Kong and they go to shin Godzilla they are going

to fall asleep because there is nothing there for them there's a few really awesome sequences with the monster but you have to just be ready for a really dry political satire about Japan's response to the tsunami and the nuclear power plant disaster wow and uh and if you're not

in the mood for something that's that heady and mostly dialogue then it's gonna you should probably pass wow okay that's so interesting I didn't for some reason I didn't really I hadn't caught up with that one yet to be honest oh really yeah I hadn't seen shin Godzilla yet but I know that a lot

of people did appreciate it so I wondered where that was on your scale it's so to speak it's it's fantastic it's a really incredible film but I would approach it more like a political satire okay then I'm that a monster movie and if that's the headspace you're in it's you should check it out

okay interesting so yeah so you're saying though that in for your money Godzilla minus one is definitely has more wide appeal to a western audience in terms of what we're used to for a I guess in an entertainment I don't even know how to an entertainment narrative for lack of a better

yeah it has a lot of audience pleasing visual effects sequences mm-hmm very very satisfying sequences it does you know Godzilla has a a method of destruction in this movie that is just unlike anything Godzilla's ever done before that's pretty much an atomic blast I'll say and when

it happens the first time you're like oh man yes oh man yes and I think that there's enough moments like this that Godzilla minus one will hold an average audience members attention which is probably why it made so much money you know a lot of the time you know shin Godzilla I think came and you

know what played in the United States and it did okay but Godzilla minus one they just kept extending the run and in the United States it made way more money than they expected it to yes tremendous absolutely well that's an excellent pick and you know I expected for that one to be

on most peoples and maybe that'll turn out to be the case because I haven't heard all the other horror Avengers lists so maybe it will be most of their number one but that's I'm really excited to see how how this fares when it's all said and done so yeah good day me too me too thanks

good so excited to hear what you guys got all right spawn of the dead what is your number one horror movie of 2023 evil dead rise oh yes tell it I really really loved this movie it was awesome the premiere I mean sorry not the premiere the premise was and is it's evil dead it's just craziness

insanity just just watch it we're you scared yeah absolutely like on a scale of one to 10 how scared did you get so if like 10 being like pet cemetery okay one being like skin a meringue okay it was probably like an eight okay yeah yeah I mean I was scared watching this movie no joke I saw

this with grizzly guests and he's very tough people don't know grizzly guests like I do trust me he's a really tough guy and so I felt a little embarrassed my hell nervous I was about this movie but it really didn't scare me so anyway go ahead brother it's great overall there's cool body horror

because like the book cool it's just like a classic kind okay I really like this movie and the setting is really cool the plot is great and there's like some cool satellite stories uh-huh do they know what that is yeah they hear me talk about it all the time it's like a a backstory

that doesn't really have any relevance other than just a little bit of character development but sometimes the storytellers will slip in a creepy little tale about something yeah that way grimlands mother yes exactly and the intro it was awesome when the title like loads up with the music oh yes

yes you'll man Joe I remember sent a text of that to us and Joe I loved it I loved I was super excited because because he was so excited about it and he loved it so much he sent it to us and he realized that that might be a little bit of a spoiler so he was so upset with himself but

I'm like no dude that was awesome so I'm really excited about that and I'll that will always remind me of Joel in a positive way everybody yeah so he is like a a deadite hovering above a lake yeah who just was very harmful to me right Kagan oh man oh man anyways spot where does this

have you seen the other evil dead films I've seen the first one and then I've seen something else have you seen the remake that came before this one no no he's only seen the OG and then and then this this latest one okay all right nice yeah I'll be curious to know how you like it in

context of the others I especially if this one's your number one I think the remake will be right up your alley okay it's it's pretty hardcore though oh yes it's pretty gnarly I agree I agree I remember yeah the that one affected me for a long time I pulled up a quote from evil

dead rise and I don't think it sounds like that scary of a movie you don't look so good mom oh nothing a big old hug and kiss from you won't fix yeah yeah yeah yeah yeah motherly love it's just a sweet movie oh yeah tender tender okay well good pick what'd you rate it spawn to the dead

nine nine ten yeah okay is that a buy obviously HB hi buy yeah he's just gonna call HB I dig it which is yes hot banana HB all right banana that's weird that's a hot banana just you said HB you said a hot banana it was not my doing okay HB you go eat we got you HB okay all right

or boy or boy that's like that it in a hot banana well oh my god depends on who you are okay so let's get to J of the dead's number one yes so ready Kagan Dean what my number one is no I really don't like I'm going over the movies that I watch because the one that I think it could be um because

uh let me just that in it doesn't it doesn't really seem like something you would pick but your number 10 really knocked my saw I was really surprised by your number 10 no one will save you you didn't think I would pick that no I didn't think you'd like that movie at all oh okay okay well here we go

then the awesome thing about having a son I have to say is that thank you that he's like thank you is that you can have kind of in a way pass yourself a bit of yourself onto the world you know and so I was very proud that he actually had my number one on his list because I insisted on

showing this to him and he loved and appreciated it too which made me so proud oh and so this gets the award for me for my personal experience of 2023 as the greatest find it was the greatest hidden gem it was my own discovery this is how it happened that was my in 2015 I did discover

bone to like thank you how do you remember that that was good because it was great so this is the shooting star moment like a unicorn moment because here's what happened I sat down to watch a movie and it was actually one of those times when I wasn't supposed to be just doing nothing I was supposed

to be in productive but I wanted to watch a horror movie right then and I was procrastinating something important I was supposed to be doing I don't remember what it was anyway it was in the afternoon I found this title on Amazon it had my girl in it the adorable Michelle Monahan

and I found a gem my number one is blood from 2023 okay so the release date on this now IMDB will list this is 2022 but by my reckoning it is 2023 now Kagan did you end up watching this blood movie no I haven't I watched one other movie off of sponsors but come back to me you keep

talking okay okay so yeah if you search for this the best way to find on IMDB is to type in blood 2022 and it will come right up it hit VOD streaming wide release at the end of January 2023 and I'm telling you January 2023 was a strong month for horror I told you had like three releases in January

on my top 10 list now the poster art is horrible everybody so I'm just going to say that upfront I think I've seen like two different posters for this and they were both bad but I went in blind to this I didn't know what it was about this is directed by Brad Anderson as I said it

started some Michelle Monahan and it has a smaller role for a skeet all rig so don't think you're gonna like you know get a big skeet role but anyways I'm just saying he's kind of a supporting character this is not rated but it would probably be a strong PG 13 I don't remember 100% a lot of

the content so anyways here's the genre classification I can't reveal all the genre stuff but the most common things that I could mention is drama mystery psychological horror and here's the premise no spoilers a single mom who works as a nurse and this single mom's played by Michelle Monahan she

works as a nurse she moves into this old farmhouse nearby is a mysterious tree that seems to make her dog act strangely well the dog attacks her son her boy and he becomes ill so this nurse mom has to try to figure out her son's ailment and hopes of keeping him alive now I know that doesn't sound

overly thrilling but guys I'm telling you right now this entire movie for me it just kept doing exactly what I was hoping it would do and I would think like this I would think nah there they wouldn't do they're never gonna do that then one of the guts to do that and then they do it

and it's so much fun that way so I'm not saying that it's predictable I'm just saying it's like in my mind I'm like oh I hope this happens or I hope that we're going in this direction and then it does but it still has a lot of surprises but I want you to know listeners this has a

darkness and a ferocity to it that involves the depths and willingness that are associated with the mother's love it was the happiest and best horror experience that I had in 2023 that afternoon and while watching this I have to say it was also a weird association there were some freaky

things happening at work like a lot of weird irrelevant stuff so it's an irrelevant association but it was just I have that tied in together in my mind kind of like the time when I was at the movie theater and I was seeing I was seeing that scariest movie I've ever seen in my life and it's

non-horror it's called The Last Descent about the dude who gets caught in nutty putty caves well when that was happening when I was watching that movie I got a text from spawns mom that it is school some nut job showed up there and said he had a bomb and everything so I had to leave that movie

theater people will assume that that's the reason that's the scariest movie to me but it's not I'm claustrophobic and so that last descent movie just wrecks me so bad I could not even stand it it's like actually so scary but anyway so yeah that's a crazy film but so sometimes if there's

something weird happening in the world when I see a movie I'll keep that association with it and so that was kind of what was happening that day there was weird stuff at work and like they let they let like a whole section of employees go like a whole team and it was super sad and I'm like and

meanwhile like I have the day off or something and I'm supposed to be being productive and I'm just watching a horror movie and just feeling like a terrible person it wasn't my fault but I'm just saying I just felt terrible inside but blood was a nine out of 10 for me I absolutely love

this I keep trying to find a physical media I need a physical meaty copy of this somehow because this is going to be one of those movies everybody it will disappear if this is going to be gone someday I know it I got to find a way to get a physical copy but if you want to hear

our review my beloved friend best friend Mr. Watson he ended up I believe I'm not mistaken he ended up watching this as well and I think we reviewed it together in episode 64 which is the episode titled song fleece let's now yeah so yeah we Watson and I review it and maybe he gives it

a mid priority rental maybe or maybe he gives it higher so just right what anyway he hates he right now what's done with me he's not amused he's just in outlaw okay so that is my number one it's called blood kegon are you gonna watch blood a hundred percent I'm going to watch yeah it's

great okay I will I'll report back and everything thank you now what's on what it was your number four wasn't I think it was on your list so I was very proud that you had it on there but anyways all right kegon he wrote he sent this true gift to me that just absolutely just amused me and

impressed me to know and like this man the fruit brute here has so many talents you people have no idea how talented this guy is and so creative and this is just one of the things you've been listening to our podcasts for a long time and you've been listening you've been listening to me like

irritate and harass and drive my co-host crazy where the rate of pull out their hair and harm me and so kegon has remembered all of these things that I have said it so I'm gonna turn it over to you to present this amazing thing you put together oh yeah well I guess I'll just say that I will

get aggravated with you sometimes and that's why it sticks in my memories yes but I just I just respect you so much that I can't stop listening though that's the problem buddy thank you thank you um so yeah where I live there are these yard signs that show up all the time and they say basically

in this house we believe and then it's just kind of a laundry list of political beliefs and the signs kind of they kind of drive me crazy because like I I like to think that I can have beliefs from both sides of the political spectrum I like to mix it up whatever you're like now hey

I'm exciting that way yes signs are a little colty to me they're a little political colty to me so I just I just leave that the opportunity to satire it so for J of the dead's lawn sign it would say this in this house we believe pig headed horror is real no escape

is a horror film skin a maryk isn't a movie at all Freddie Krueger is not scary black goo and whispers are dumb horror comedy is an oxy moron and terminator is a slasher I agree with those you agree with all of them yeah you are you are a true spawn of the dance yeah he's a dude he's a chip off the

old lock let me see how many of those I don't agree with you're like most of them I don't know there's only one of there's only one of them that I straight up don't agree with because you love Freddie you're a Freddie well no I'm not a Fred head I'm a Nancy fan I'm a Nancy fan I like her too

yeah and I don't like funny Freddie Krueger I like serious Freddie Krueger same same where we feel brother we're we feel in that so when we get to part four I'm done usually I'm dead I'm a 137 person so okay he's not that funny in three yeah yeah I agree anyway but that's and you don't

like the second one you don't like the cuz I actually a big defender of the second one is what I think the second one has the second one's grown on me like it's kind of a you know 137 is like a satisfying trilogy um two is kind of a nice little bonus meal and even though it messes with the mythology in a way that like I don't think does the series a lot of huge favors because it kind of undoes the fundamental premise I do think that it's doing something really interesting and I think

the the subjects of it makes it really fascinating so I actually like it a lot more than movies four five and six yes okay interesting well for people who are fans of a nightmare on Elm Street yes stay subscribed and stick with us especially coming up in November you will be very very delighted for

what's coming to you thanks to the inimitable the arm and white of horror podcasting the um Cassandra of horror podcast and Ron Martin but anyways but yeah thank you Kagan for putting that list together Kagan's like yeah you should make this into t-shirts or something but I don't I don't

know if anybody wear it except for me and spawn but I'm just saying that I seriously love that you put that together I was flattered oh absolutely I hope to inundate you with more of my Photoshop project so I'm I'm I'm I used to send more of them back in the day but I'm glad you got a kick

out of that one love it could double as an epitaph by that that's true pose yeah maybe that will end up on my tombstone along with pepperoni cheese get it anyways okay so I love how everybody else's top 10 has probably been like you know all the other horror vangers they'll do like an hour long

reasonable top 10 countdown and here we are in like two and a half hours or whatever it is but if you made it all the way to the end of this then I am very impressed and we are grateful and we're especially thankful to have been joined today by the fruit broot himself Kagan Brighton Bach

our official contributor and so Kagan let the listeners know where they could catch up with more of your work and perhaps what sort of upcoming teases you have for us here on J the Dead's New Horror movies thank you so much for having me on I am amazing so you're welcome

no it was really an honor to present my list with you guys it was so much fun and I guess for this show I will have a the music segment coming back at some point yes yes yes but I've also been planning and doing lots of research I have so many notes well wait is that not what you're talking

well no no you're you're absolutely right I was just gonna say the list if you're wondering where he's been he's been doing more river rafting than Bert Reynolds everybody oh even more than Kevin Bacon for that's right it's a river year it's been a river year I've been and I still have another I

actually have a river trip in October too so no buddy I was a river guy at one point in my life that's impressive I'm just doing it as a like as a hobby at this point so amazing very cool but yeah and then you know I have my music project bloody cap array people can go check out but I've also

been burning away tons of my time working on a speaking of oxymorons a horror musical but more to come on that in the distant future I'm sure but but the thing I'm really excited about and I don't know if this will happen and if Dave Z doesn't want to do it then I might have to solo cast it

or or anybody else he wants to join he's in he's in oh is he he's a hundred percent in he's like I just tell me when oh man really okay you too this will be tremendous it'll be tremendous tease it tease it brother it's gonna happen yeah so um I am just really the shining is my

number one favorite horror film of all time it's Dave Z is the number one favorite horror film of all time although I might not necessarily be a believer in them I am obsessed with the idea that Stanley Kubrick puts subliminal imagery throughout the shining and the theories they come

about because of it and so a lot of people are familiar with the documentary room 237 but I'm hoping to talk about things much further beyond what that documentary touches on because there's oh yeah there's oh yeah there's way more theories out there and there's one in specific

that's uh pretty edgy I'll have to talk to you about it and make sure you feel cool with me talking about it because it's not a feel good topic okay but there are there are some pretty deep theories about the shining that I would love to talk to Dave Z about wow brother hey I'm totally excited

about this I seriously in the fact that you not that I ever thought you were gonna do this but the fact that it's not gonna just merely be a re-gurgitation of room 237 but you said you know that additional additional content for people to consider brother this has got to happen this

has got to happen I can't wait to hear this oh yeah no like I'm deep into this nice I can't wait all right well hey that is tremendous and yeah Lister's let us know your thoughts on all this stuff you're excited for it um yes and keg and some encouragement so when he gets back

from the rapids he can jump on the mic with Dave Z so that's right anyways well I want to thank everybody for being here thank you for supporting us on this show we really appreciate the Lister's we would probably still do this just for ourselves because that's the kind of uh what are we what's

that called that word all narcissists that that's the kind of narcissists that we are but absolutely but it makes it so much richer and so much more fun to know that people are actually out there listening and that you are enjoying it so we appreciate you and so on behalf of the fruit keg and brighten buck and spawn of the dead with I'm your late night horror host Jay of the dead and you've been listening to Jay of the Dead's new horror movies the ultimate horror podcast so
