Hi and welcome to Jay of the Dead's New Horror Movies. From our precursor horror movie podcast to this new incarnation of the show, we are still reviewing the hell out of horror movies. I'm your host Jay of the Dead and I'm podcasting from Pleasant Grove, Utah, home of cravings, bistro, and the manly sized gourmet grilled cheese sandwich. That's right, you can skip purple turtle and go to cravings. Not an official sponsor. Now this podcast

has nine horror hosts and you're about to hear from all nine of them momentarily. As we continue our long awaited countdown of the top 10 horror movies of 2022. So for this episode specifically, you're going to hear our round of number four picks for 2022. And now without further delay, let's move into the top 10 horror movies of 2022. As prescribed by Jay of the Dead's New Horror Movies, the Avengers of horror podcasting.

Jay of the Dead here with the Gilman Joel Robertson for another 2022 horror blue as Dave Z. He calls it. He calls him blue. And I kind of love that. That's kind of dirty. Well, I get it. That seems fitting for X. Yes, yes, except that's that's not what we're giving away this time. Ah, yes, it's not, but it's close. It is close. We are giving away pearl. The sequel, oh, prequel, actually, to X. Did you say hurl? No, do I say hurl? No, no, no, no, that's what I wanted to do after

watching the cursed Jay. Oh, no, I'm just okay. Pearl, pop, pop, pop, pearl. That's right, which is a very nice. I don't know. I don't know if you've purchased this yet. Blu-ray, DVD and digital combo here. Nice, very nice. And the winner is and full disclosure. He's been on my other show and is a friend of all of us. So this is legitimately random and not favoritism. It's our most recent commenters. That's what it counts. That's what counts.

The winner is of Pearl, Brian Scott horror movie fanboy. That's right. You know it. And Joel, what would you tell people if they're like, oh, yeah, I won something I never win something, but I already own that blue ray. What would you tell people who are saying that to themselves right now? I would say start an eBay account. Yeah, that's right. Beautiful. I knew you would have a solution. You're so smart. I'm not saying or have multiple

copies. Yeah. Like Dave Becker and have like thousands of extra movies, doubles of movies and not even know it. Or you could just gift them to me. I'm happy with that too. Any of those three options. That's right. And what I do if I end up in this situation, not that we're telling people what to do, but I'll be like, oh, I know a horror fan and be like, do you have Pearl? No, well, then you got to have it. Here you go. And then there's

your best. That's the thoughtful thing to do. I love that my immediate nerd knee jerk response was be a dirty capitalist. I love it. Hey, buddy, off of the gift you were given. I love capitalism. Good job. Capitalism always wins. Jay of the dead here. And I am with Mr. Dave Z. Hey, brother. Hey, what's happening, man? It's so exciting. Oh, I'm so excited to talk to you again. So this is for my number four

pick. And what's great is this is weird, but it's the luck of the draw because you and I happen to review my number four pick together just the two of us during episode 20 of Jay of the dead's new horror movies. And it was one of my favorite reviews of 2022. And it's my know what it is. No, yes, I do. I think it was the only one we did just the two of us. Yes, it's terrifying to now this movie became widely available in the US in October of 2022.

Was written and directed by Damien Leon, the makeup and special effects man turned writer director who also brought us terrifier, all hallows, Eve, etc. So here's the Jay of the dead premise to this in case people don't know any good horror fan is aware that the monster is never dead. And such as the case as terrifier to opens, art, the clown is still kicking and he continues

his murderous and mocking rampage and miles county on Halloween night. But in terrifier too, art, the clown has a creepy little sidekick and she's listed in the credits as the little pale girl. And I should mention also here that we have a plucky protagonist, Sienna, who is not your helpless little dams one distress. So pretty cool setup here. Now if people out there, if you've seen the first terrifier film, then you know, it's pretty hardcore. You get a killer clown,

somewhat supernatural slasher flick. Dave Z, do you consider art the clown a slasher guy? Cause I do. I just wondered if you do. Yeah, yeah, I do. I think that's fair. Okay, cool. Okay, just wondered and and and I have to say I think that terrifier to even gets a little more brutal in some ways, at least on an emotional level than the first terrifier. I think of course both films are violent and gory and there's just scenes in the second one though that are just so crushing

to me. And what makes it worse is you've got art the clown silently laughing during these like heartbreaking massacre scenes. And Dave Z, we talked about this in our review, but there's a scene in a bedroom involving a mother and a daughter and of course art the clown. It was almost too much for me. And I'm pretty insulated and desensitized. So I mean did that I'm sure you know what scene I'm talking about that that scene effect you and like did it like blow out the little candle in

your soul. I got to say don't think less of me, but it didn't, but I but I loved it for that reason. But but let me say this Jay, if it was a different type of movie, if it wasn't a terrifier tool, and it was done differently. Let's say it was just some drama or let's say like that movie searching or something, some different type of movie and something happened along the same way, but it wasn't, it seems like the gorgag is enough for me to kind of distance my to separate

myself from real emotion. I'm too much into the gorg where if it was presented in a different type of film, the same thing happening, but less gory and more serious. I think that would 100% affect me. So it isn't like I don't have those feelings because I am I am pretty I am pretty sensitive. I'll tell you right now. Yeah. But just not watching a movie like this. How's that? Do you cry when you hear air supply songs Dave Z only because it reminds me of being a child

in the backseat of my mother's car. And I wish I still was that child. Yes. I'm with you brother. That's how I feel about things. Anyways, I don't know where air supply came from, but you know Greg Amortis is singing air air supply songs right now as far as listening to I know he's singing him. Anyways, Terran in my head making love out of nothing at all. Yeah. And I know just where to touch you now say it. So terrifying too. That took a real weird turn

during this review. But who would have thought yeah. And you're fired to that low lyrics are sung at any time discussing. So yeah, so you're right. I see what you're saying because there is an over the topness to this, which not that I'm saying that makes it unrealistic. But for me, it descends beneath horrific and then it even goes down beneath nihilistic and then it like revels in depravity and it's just sick and twisted. And I have a couple of films in my top 10 list

for 2022 that are not for the faint of heart and terrifier to definitely one of those. So just to you know, warning to those who haven't seen it. Now they've art the clown is very scary to me. He is my scariest horror clown. And I just say the listers if you want a hardcore horror film from 2022 that doesn't point any punches for Gorehounds. And then this is your movie. This is a 9 out of 10 for me. I told people to see it in the theater. It's a buy. I already own it. And I remember you gave

it an 8 out of 10 Dave Z and you said see it in the theater and buy it as well. And so for the listeners, just to wrap up here, if you haven't heard it yet, you can hear our review of Terrifier 2 in episode 20 and then an episode 22 of J of the Dead's new horror movies. It was really fun because we had,

you know, the other host reviewed it like a lot of the other hosts were in 22. Dave Z and I were in episode 20 and we talked about the terrifying character of art the clown and whether he's become a top tiered horror icon yet and in episode 20. We talked about the exploding heads horror movie podcasts top 200 horror movies of all time and I just want to take a quick moment here at the end of my little my pick to say I have officially subscribed today to the exploding heads Patreon page.

Yeah I know it's three episodes I know three of us oh 20 hour incredible incredible brother. Thank you.

Okay well this is Dave Dr. Shockfecker here and I am presenting my number four movie and I am joined by the amazing Dr. Walking Dead Kyle Bishop. How are you today? Hello everyone. Hello hello hello Dave I'm putting a lot of stock in your list so I'm excited about number four.

Well I'm going to be honest yeah like and I said it before I didn't see as many of the 2022 films as I wanted to but this one I think would have made my list if I'd seen 150 of them and this is again this is my number four and it is a movie out of well I'm going to say Norway.

It's so funny it says it's from Norway Sweden Denmark and Finland well that's pretty much that whole Nordic region it is a movie directed by Eskild Volk and he also wrote this it is a movie called the Innocence and I'm going to give the IMDB synopsis during the break Nordic summer a group of

children reveal their dark and mysterious powers when the adults aren't looking in this original and gripping supernatural thriller playtime takes a dangerous turn yes like most IMDB synopsis that sucks but this movie does not this is a movie I think you need to say for me this is a superhero

origin story and a supervillain origin story and they're all children it sort of goes off on it um well let's just say that there's this one girl this one young girl who is you know on the spectrum she has uh issues and her younger sister I think is resentful towards her so we're

seeing that early on we're seeing the younger sister sort of be mean to her older sister who is on the spectrum because she's like sort of out of it but we find out that the older sister has these powers and we find that out when they meet another young man they move to this they move to this

community like this this uh I want to say like a part my complex the family does and the younger girl meets this boy and when the sister gets together with this boy they finally have these powers you know the boys sort of knew he had them to begin with but when the when the older sister is there

they're stronger and there's another girl involved another young girl involved and this is well but what happens is the boy's home life is terrible he is mistreated by his mother it is just terrible and you see him becoming a bad person whereas the older sister you know all of a sudden the younger

sister sort of respects the older sister and she's getting stronger you know she like I said she was on the spectrum she wasn't talking she wasn't doing anything this is and I think where the horror comes from is what happens to these kids that these are just children finding out they

have these special powers and the boy goes down a dark path the girl ends up saying hey we've got to take him down he's done some bad things uh I don't know how have you seen this movie oh I've seen it and the listeners know I've seen it oh okay this is a this is one of those movies that is a slow

burn and it's another one of these movies that lingers after you've seen it yes definitely and I remember you mentioning this before when you talked about it these kids are shockingly good actor very good they're very good and the the boy the kind of evil boy which I think is Sam

Ashraf who plays his band yeah oh man he's chilling he does some things that um that are really pretty freaky and his lack of an emotional connection to anything is really upsetting and not this isn't a spoiler but the plot comes to a climax and I find I found the way

that climax played out in broad daylight in public yes made it all the more chilling definitely this the yeah this is this is this would be horror in the daylight which I know is something that Jay is a is a big fan of and um again you know I think no I would this is definitely horror

especially with the character of Ben yeah you know with with where that character goes this is definitely uh this is definitely a straight up horror film and I was blown away by it I saw this and the hatching um the same day and I remember thinking the hatching was good but man the innocence

was great yeah and that is why that is why it's my number four great movie um do you have a rating on it a recommendation as well I'm gonna give it you know what I'd give this a 9.5 out of 10 and I see you definitely have to check it out I totally agree great

Mr. Watson here and I've got Dave Dr. Shockbacker joining me as I present to you all my number four film of 2022 and that is the cursed doc listen to me any other year in this might well have been my number one but oh my good lord dude 2022 was strong this here the in the curse to a K.A.A.

was also called eight for silver I believe yeah yeah yeah eight for silver I was again is that the right number well film right yes that's the one nice yeah yeah number four here yeah the curse and so yeah everybody this is a period piece horror film set in 18th century France and

we're following a prominent family who themselves are part of a prominent community and they've got a problem a clan of gypsies as they call them because the word Roma wasn't a thing until recently let alone the 18th century but this group of undesirables is claiming that the land upon which our

prominent families live is actually theirs so this land dispute leads to some bloodshed and from this bloodshed comes a supernatural curse in the form of a wherewolf like beast that is just ravaging the area and then from here it's up to a mysterious investigator to get to the bottom

of who or what this creature is as well as what's really going on in this town I won't say any more than that because there are so many interesting story elements it play here but I will say this this is almost certainly I'm gonna have to rack my brain to really just find out if this is true

but almost certainly the best wherewolf movie I've seen in who knows how long the horror genre has definitely got a shortage of great wherewolf movies wouldn't you say doctor shock yeah I would yes yeah I'm thinking just in recent memory late phases from 2014 was excellent there was this

horror comedy from a couple years ago wherewolves within did you see that one yes I did yeah and I liked it quite a bit yes and yeah me too and I obviously adore wolf cop from 2014 that is right up my alley but I can't remember the last time we had a wherewolf themed horror movie that was

that felt this big and as serious as the cursed is here I would say that the period appropriate setting and costuming or top notch the violence is gory and horrific there's a I guess you can say an aftermath scene that was just that was pretty shocking I wouldn't say it terrifier two levels

or the sadness levels as far as like some of the gory or movies of the year but it's close and as underlying themes go there's a lot the film has to say about the moral fallout of European colonialism and how violence begets only more violence right it's all truly profound and you can

feel that heaviness every step of the way now doc I've read some negative reviews about the cursed that make these feeble attempts to call the movie racist by claiming that the movie is root is has us as the viewer rooting for the white people who benefited from the slaughter of the gypsy

Roma people there in the first act but let me just put this out there I reject that on its face that reading of the film might be hip and trendy right now but it misses the point entirely and you know what I may just have to shoot some shots across the bow if and when I inevitably give

this movie a thorough review in the near future so my friends I'm coming in with a 10 out of 10 on this bad boy that's the cursed here at number four nice and it was Jay it was Jay the day who turned me on to that film yes Jay yeah he was a I remember hearing about this movie when it was

called eight for silver but then I didn't realize that the cursed was that same movie because I couldn't see eight for silver back then there I do some people who'd seen it through a the doc let's just say some less than savory means and and yeah it was Jay who was hyping this up and yeah

and my buddy Eric Webster of the dark discussions podcast was all about I was like all right I got to see this movie and sure enough like I said any other year this would probably in the one or two spot but man we had a good year so I'm happy to have the cursed at number four nice good choice great

choice all right welcome back to doctor walking dead top 10 of 2022 list we are all the way up to number four and I have the honor of sharing that with none other than the immortal Greg Amortus or the demortal so I'm really glad to be talking to Greg today we don't talk near enough you know we don't

we need we need to change that quit I know I gotta come out and visit yes you guys are so awesome oh you are a brother all right so number four this is first off I'm just gonna say I have a I have a number of non-English language films on my list this year I think it was a pretty good

year for the so-called foreign film and this one is a Dutch film that is filled with tension and suspense and is very very very disturbing and uncomfortable especially once you get to the last 15 minutes that is one of the darkest most terrifying films I've ever seen and I am speaking of

speak no evil by Christian tough all right so this film the less you know about this film the better it is really initially about social awkwardness and I hate social awkwardness J and I just can't stand watching that on film it's more upsetting to me than violence yeah you have two couples who

kind of become friends and one of the couples invites the other couple to visit and they go for a visit man I would never do that if I met a couple on holiday I would never like go visit them unless we you know interchange some pleasantries through social media for exactly because you know

I could come visit you in Pearl and that'd be fine because we now know each other but these guys they're really putting it out on a limb and then you throw in children children make everything a little more creepy a little more nerve-racking and then it just gets worse and worse and worse now the the poster for this film the one currently featured on a movie database is is kind of the climax moment and it's really effective now I just learned today that they are going to remake this film in

America with an English speaking cast and I you know I don't think it's necessary I think this film does it all but we'll see what the American version comes up with I will just say that the ending of this film is terrifying and we'll stay with you and so I have other films lower on my list

that are better films quote unquote but a lot of my top 10 is based on the films that have haunted me in the months since I've seen them and speak no evil has not left me alone since I watched it so Greg were you ever to see this one I was and I do thoroughly enjoy this and it's very you

explained it man it's very disturbing and the climax that you're talking about in the movie database poster you're exactly spot on like that that climax speaks so much volumes with this movie but I'm totally with you like the meeting up of them at the beginning and then the hand like

that would never happen with me either I'm a very outgoing person but I am a very private person to an extent to yeah I'm totally not being in the pleasantries that these people are sharing but no it's extremely disturbing film now the fact that they're remake it and yeah I'm kind of

with you Kyle I don't know because here's the deal I'm okay with like let the right one in and then they redid it in American version pretty much spot picture on picture scene for scene whatever they're both good films but it's like wasn't necessary not really I think this one would be

non-necessary I think they're going to screw the poop chilling so I would prefer it where it's that right here very disturbing film man that's all I got to say is disturbing and the kids and not all this movie goes there like it really goes into some very awkward position and situations

yeah and it goes from awkward to terrifying yeah super fast yeah because you don't even scream horror movie in this until you're in the situation and then this is straight up a very horrifying situation you're in like you're straight up in a horror movie once this thing hits climax

with all points and I'm like I mean I'm watching this movie shivering like oh my gosh I can see myself in this and be like I what would I do situation and I love movies that do that yes it is a what would you do and those are so great to watch but you also may find yourself yelling at the

uh at the screen oh Pearl screamed at the screen watching this and she's like through the whole movie like she's punching me and squeezing me and like why and then all I gotta say is the pit I'll just say the pit and that scene is just insane holy crap dude I'm telling you like she's yelling

at the screen full screen unlike what you're right love you're right I can argue I'm totally right there with you well and that's the message of the film what will you do to not offend someone yes and man just offend people I know right and I get totally and I give the director a lot a lot

a lot of credit in this one he touched on some themes and subjects that I think some people shy away from he went at it head on and I give him props for it man you know major props so yeah that's my number four speak no evil good choice this is Gil man Joel you're listening to Jay the

dad's new horror movies the Berserk Bat Boone of horror podcasting all right listeners this is Greg Amortis and I have with me from exploding his podcast and of course Jay the dad's new horror movie podcast if you've ever heard of that show it's actually pretty cool show the horror Avengers yeah I don't know if you heard about have you heard about it I don't know but it's Dave Z what's up Dave Z hey what's happening man very happy to be here with you yes I love this man and I'm so glad that

you're on for my number four I'm gonna be giving my number four because there's a special reason behind it but I and Jay didn't even know it I'm telling you Jay knows things that he is truly iron man like he truly has visions or maybe he's the visionary I don't know maybe he's everything but

anyway we'll call him a visionary let's go right to his head watch out Jay but use it against you you know he's already using it right now he's like well we can't we can't bring in the DC world so we'll leave that out but he is somebody that can't bring stuff in so there you go but no I'm super

excited have you on Dave Z is we give him my number four so I think we'll just go right into it number four is a movie and God I want to surprise you with it but I can't but it's a movie that could be a prequel maybe a sequel no it's ty west it was his prequel but came out as a second movie it is

pearl yeah starring the all so lovely as Dave Z will probably say goddess Mia Goth oh my goodness man I absolutely felt in love with this movie in the theater and this was not as as horrifying as ty west other movie released earlier in the year which was X but this one right here man

to spoke so many volumes I love that we got to visit the character of Pearl as a younger person and then we got to make that journey through it was so freaking great I think ty west just crushed the story Mia Goth man went from being a great actress to like start them in my opinion in this movie

like she really went even a notch above not that she needed that push but she did and then we got infinity pool which is another whole story that I love but but anyways this one right here was so outstanding and now I'm waiting for triple axine Maxine so I think that's coming really soon

so excited but man pearl was a no brainer it was just where was it making in my top 10 there's one scene toward the end of this movie that was Oscar worthy I think most of us have agreed there's something that she does that it's just almost unmatchable man but man this movie just

follows the story of Pearl as a young lad and she's making her journey and she's wanting to become a star and we get to see the things that we saw in X where it kind of originated and where it had finally progressed in X and I love that I love I thought it was so clever a tie to do this

like who does as a director two movies in one year in a span like he did like who does that and they're both in my opinion masterpiece is like I don't know how you do that but he did it and I'm only expecting triple X Maxine to be better but anyways it's tight west me a goth this movie's a

freaking tin and it's a must on I actually of course do on this and X and I will own triple X Maxine when it comes out so glad it got releases but it's outstanding Dave Z thoughts on pearl oh man I love pearl what a what a great choice and what a year Thai West

yes and in the goth this herself my girl Mia my own I so great I all I can do is really echo everything you said because you're spot on and here's what's really odd I don't know for a fact see I've watched the special feature so I should know but I know that X was made and then I know

that they they wrote pearl together and then filmed it shortly afterwards during the pandemic and I don't know for a fact that this was imagined when when he made X was he imagining at that point that there's going to be a pearl that there's going to be a prequel or not or as it's something

they came you know that was birthed from the conversation between you know Mia and Thai and what went down here I can't remember I know they they collaborated on it but I don't know if it was planned from the start and I mean I love it no matter what and I'm very you know I can barely contain myself

for for a Maxine here and but either way it's great but if they if they did just set out to make X and then have this come across and say okay let's do this and now it ends up you know going you know into this crazy trilogy two that came out the same year which is just unheard of yeah wow

just so impressive everything you said the way it looks the way it sounds the performances Mia is front and center really for the first time like I was excited because I've been a Mia fan since the first time I saw her was in was in wellness the cure for wellness in a right away I was in

press fire and that's when I started my whole saying this girl is she special I think she's beautiful everything else then I went back and then I started watching all the other library and then Merrill Bone came out shortly after that and then Susperia and off to the races we go but Mia

I don't think everything I've seen she hasn't been in any bad movies yet all her performances are great but this movie is the one that people are gonna look back on and this is the movie that made her a star like you said and it's so funny because that's kind of a repetitious thing for

for X and for Pearl and the whole world's gonna know my name I'm a star and all that and sure enough she's a star now everybody a couple years ago I would say Mia Goth and I'd be talking about her and say the Gothis and this and then she's the goddess but and have to people really who you're

talking about who is that now everybody's like now she's on the tip everybody's tongue just and it's not just because of X like when X came out I was like I was excited because she was going to be the main character which she was and was excellent but then when they then when Pearl she

was even more front and center and I was just like wow look at her she went from like you know not bit role but she was never the the star yeah and now all of a sudden she's the star in two movies in row and now you know everybody is talking about her but all in all just a great movie

I love this pic and I don't want to talk more than you you talk but we talk about Pearl and we talk about Mia gets me excited because just great movie all around and she's great and just great choice man I'm happy that I happen to be here for this this this this pic like you said

I'm telling Jay knew he just knew in his mind it was his I'm telling you watch it Jay you're starting to use your powers before we knew he had those powers watch that but now I was one of those with you Dave I didn't know a lot about me I've seen her evidently because I've seen all

these movies and now I gotta go back and rewatch and say hey there's Mia but now I'm one of those it's like holy crap and then now she's gonna be in the blade tree blade universe over there so I'm like what oh I hope she's a vampire that's on another right yeah hopefully so that was my number

four it was ty west and it was pearl and it's a tn-10 purchasing all day long baby this is macula and I am going to give my number four pic to Jay of the dead Jay of the dead I love how Joel by the way always refers to you as our fearless leader

I know when actually I'm afraid of quite a lot of wrong things yes but like Joel for example because I met him in person and he's actually a very formidable presence anyway go ahead sorry that's amazing I need a meet you all in person and so my number four

pic and I'm using a little bit of Jay's you know do whatever the heck you want kind of mentality and this you know as I mentioned before I kind of just pulled from my list I just you know organized it in year and then score and so even my top 10 was a surprise to me right so and I was

just deciding I was like can I count this and I just decided yeah because you guys even reviewed it on here so I'm counting it but mine is the Batman and there was just a couple of things that kind of for me like is it a horror film I guess not but there's so many cool things that like that horror

film people are gonna love at least I was geeking out on like for example Batman every other superhero has like a bright costume and they're there to save the day and they're so clearly like doing what they're doing which you know is rescuing white kittens out of treetops during the

middle of the day right that's right but Batman has this like I'm going to terrify my enemies and this was the first movie I mean he's always done that and all the other movies do that but I remember loving that intro where he's talking about out this I'm and people who haven't seen this

just need to see it because they do such a better job but the bat signal is not just a call it's a warning and they keep showing all these moments where these people are breaking the law and they're looking into these dark corners thinking oh my gosh is Batman gonna jump out and get me and I just

love that fear is like a tool that Batman uses to defeat his enemies yes and the cape that he has is very Dracula-esque it has like that little collar on it that kind of wraps around it does and it's just it's and you know it's just dawning on me Jason what's up is that Robert Pattinson is a famous vampire thank you very well sort of and but that that's kind of cracking me up you know like in this movie there really is horror and and and one thing to me that's one of the scariest things ever

is I would say the vast majority not just the majority but I would say the vast majority of people on earth would like to believe that they're doing the right thing they're doing what's right you know their cause is just whatever and so it's amazing to me that this movie plays on that idea

that like even the enemies think they're doing what's right which is one of the scariest things to me you know they're even killing in the name of righteousness you know justice for all sort of thing and so it's like yes that is terrifying to me and and they really did a good job of making

the bad guy super evil you know and terrifying and yes and threatening and so yeah I just I could not get enough of this one it's three hours long and I saw twice in like two days and I loved it and I bought it and I'm a Batman's always been and always will be my favorite superhero

and and yeah so my number four is the Batman you know I love I love that you picked this I wonder if listeners will give you grief for it but you're right we did review it on here because honestly this is at the very least horror adjacent and the way that the riddler is portrayed here is just

this guy because I remember when Joker in the dark night I remember thinking okay nobody's gonna be able to approach Heath Ledgers just unsettling role but I feel like Paul Dano did it as the real Mac he did it yeah it's amazing thank you Jason this is Ron Martin and I'm here to continue

my top ten list of 2022 and I'm here today with the great Greg Immortis here to help me tell you what my number four pick on my top ten list is are you are you excited for this Greg Immortis I have always excited man trust me I'm super on edge of my seat my fingers are are white knuckled I want to

hear your number four on I'm so I feel like your fingers are always white knuckled but they're extremely white knuckled this time well I'm gonna pre-appologize a little bit Greg Immortis because I think my number four on my list is probably the least sexy of any of the picks on my

list it's pretty basic it's gonna be on a lot of lists but if a movie is good a movie is good that I'm not gonna ignore it just because it's Bloom House which is a production company I don't particularly care for but it's also Joe Hill which is an author that I just got into this past year

and it also is Ethan Hawke who's an actor that I really like and I think you know where I'm going with this mm-hmm my number four pick for 2022 is Bloom House's Black Phone when I recorded the episode about Black Phone for this podcast earlier you know I nitpicked it because it's kind of what

I do I didn't think that the main character was all that sinister and it seems like every bloomhouse film has a mask in it that I assume they're just trying to sell extra masks for merchandise purposes but I will say since that review this movie has stuck with me I have went back and rewatched it

which I on my top ten list I've rewatched most of them but not all of them so that's saying something that I was drawn back to the film because I wanted to see if I was missing something I wanted to see if there were other levels of the movie that I didn't catch the first time around

Joe's on time to take you a couple of views to actually take a movie and I did appreciate the performance of Ethan Hawke a little more on this I did I appreciated his performance the first time I just didn't eat the character was all that scary the grabber because he didn't do to me a

whole lot except for you know he punched out like a like a like a 12 year old kid but this time I did think he stepped up levels of sinisterness if that's a word I don't think that's a word but I just made it a word and then discussing Black One and I'm anxious to go back and actually read

the source material on this and to kind of get more in depth into the lore and the story of Black One it's creepy it has really good ambience I like the storytelling with the children who are calling on the phone I think the mask actually works I know I criticize the mask when we did

the original review but upon a second viewing I think the mask works a little more and the fact that you know he's kind of just a guy who makes mistakes even works though I'm still gonna say that they'd rather be unlocked in the house from the inside so that's supposed to make any sense to

me that's why I sat number four maybe but this is a movie I don't have I don't have a physical copy of this yet but I will at some point get a physical copy of this and this is the one I'll probably revisit here and there because it's it's a genuinely scary horror film which bloom house let's

be honest isn't always successful at creating yeah yeah the atmosphere in this movie is so intense like it's thick and I think it's the the child endangerment part of it it brings you know what I mean to for for sure sure I agree man Ethan Hawks amazing in this film and I tend to be

drawn to films that are a bit more ambient even if the the plots a little looser or the acting so little worse which is why I'm a lot of times I'm drawn to independent films but this one just just worked for me in that that big Hollywood over produce sort of way I fell for it so

maybe in a why with cancer a stronger year for horror maybe it's not number four but it would still be on the list I think in even even in a really good year for horror so well done to bloom house for this I'll give them credit for that mostly I'll give Scott Derrickson credit because I

think he's a good he's I think he's a decent director oh I totally agree and and I got to give a big shout out to Madeline McGraw who played Gwen little girl but yeah well that girl was phenomenal she was awesome right yes I loved that little girl I was like dude you're on my radar like you

have quickly become on my radar I'm looking for you in other films because she's outstanding and that's not to say that the main character Mason Thames was bad either right but she did but she did kind of still the show I agree yeah totally and and the Tom Svini mask is like I agree with you

when you're talking about bloom house and the mass thing because I think they got something with trick or treat maybe that they're just like studios where they just kind of right right let's get some mask we got a mask mandate mate we got to make two more masks this year all right I'm like a

movie so yeah I'll tell you now with you know but I love it yeah our Halloween costume sells worked out a little bit last year can you make a mask and a movie for us please there yeah thanks I appreciate it yeah please give me give me a very scary one and we want a different one like

roll with it okay and there's just one I got you it worked but it works for this film and to their credit I haven't seen this mask for sale anyway uh trick or treat studios yeah like you have to the website or something yeah yeah yeah but like you know you know you didn't see it in the

retail store or a Halloween not even like a spirit Halloween no totally didn't but man it comes with all three interchangeable faces yeah I got to get it it's gotta be on my ass it's something sinister about it I mean I hate to eat and Hulk and sinister you gotta go figure one but I'm

just saying like it's so sinister look at it mate it's like it is I think things are about to get spicy in the Greg and Mortis household when you have the mask on and you're just sitting in the kitchen a sleep on a chair with a weapon with a weapon and yeah yeah right white knuckle face on face off I don't know if I know that is my that's my never-for-choice for 2020 nice good joys love for you all right everybody it is time for number fours and uh this is Dave Z of course and I am joined

again by a macula how are you thank you for being here I'm so good I'm I'm so excited about hearing your number four we're getting closer and closer to the top so that's exciting right on yeah this is a lot of fun doing it this way at first I thought I was gonna be an awful lot of work

but it really isn't and it gives everybody a chance to do things together so it's yeah yeah yeah it's pretty cool okay so I'll jump right into my number four this is one that came out towards the end of the year and I had to go to the theater to see it and man I went and I went by myself

and I was just kind of enthralled with the plot from the time I said down until until the movie ended and what a surprise that I enjoyed it this much but I did this is the menu oh wow I was so afraid I was gonna be something that I hadn't seen but I saw the menu nice big this is amazing

oh right I'm going to solve it yeah because it was kind of popular so I figured I do have some others on this list that not everybody has seen so then I'm getting a couple that have our more mainstream but yeah number four the menu you know I love on the Taylor joy I have been a big fan of

her since the witch because that's still my favorite movie of of this millennium so far so I love it and I love it the first time I saw it now now with her being in it I was already I already was intrigued by it I remember actually I don't watch trailers at all but if I'm at the theater I

still don't watch them but if a trailer begins and it doesn't give me a horror vibe I will watch it and the trailer began for this movie once it didn't give me the vibe at first so I stuck with it so I actually saw most of the trailer and then I think kind of halfway through it was like all this

looks like something I'm gonna see so I'm gonna plug my ears and put my head down like yeah that I am so that's what I do I I embarrass my wife and my daughter all the time but that's me so so I I tell you what I came in I saw this movie and I said down like I said and I was just

hook line and sinker from such a great stire just these people getting ready to go and you know they're they're gonna go on this boat and they're gonna travel to go eat this big meal that's supposed to take four hours and you have these different I love movies that have big cast when

you when you when people are introduced kind of like one by one like I think you win this movie I I don't know this this it's just a fun feel and there's if you pace it correctly and you can bounce between the characters in which it's so easy to do here because they're all in the same room

in their at table so they're just visiting around and you see all the different characters and what not and you're learning more about them as we go and who's who's a bad type of character who's a good type of character and you quickly find out that uh you know this what's going out with this

meal is um you get you get some undesirable type people around you and at the same time you're seeing a lot of the you're kind of experiencing experiencing it through the eyes of uh i need Taylor joy and pardon me for getting the her character's name but I don't have written down so

oh margo or something like that margo yeah right it was it her even her real name I think she month by two oh that's right you're right right yeah well and the cast really is amazing and oh my gosh yeah this and something about that like the actions of going through the courses and stuff is so

interesting and engaging like I was definitely sitting you know paying attention every second of this movie for sure yeah it's it's one of the movies that that that can do that for you because sometimes I space out sometimes I drift off when I'm watching movies and I think that's what it is you're

meaning that it about it it was based so well you're bouncing around with you in different characters then on top of it you're bouncing around between the different courses and I am a picky eater but at the same time I feel like I would love to do something like this I'm not like a

hoidy toidy type dude whatsoever but something about I do love food though for being a picky eater if I'm into I'm kind of into this whole format of going somewhere I almost wish I could do it and you know when they're doing the stuff with the bread and the condiments which is kind of funny

and and again I don't like most of the food but the look of it is almost good enough that I want to eat it or something when you hear the chef talk about it and when you hear some of the people that are the patrons talking about the food I'm like wow this makes me want to be with them but of

course I don't really want to be with them because all of a sudden we kind of get first we get the the tortilla situation which I think is brilliant when they're showing the different things on the tortillas and be like wow what's this and then shortly after they you get the jaw-dropping moment

of one of the people that that works for the chef and what he pulls and like okay what's going on here all right here we go and then we learn more about the the character of Margo and how she really shouldn't be here and in what's going on and the it's kind of enjoyable to see the chef

refines yeah yeah he's so good and yeah when you you're right when he explains the food and even Margo's date like I love that actor and right the way they talk about food you're like oh my gosh it feels like the most important thing you could ever do you know like right make and prepare and

eat and appreciate food yeah you get that sense it just it really is amazing and there's subgenuinely funny parts to this like good good humorous moments I feel like yes and humor humor is what I like and in a horror movie when it's necessary I don't like comedy if you will

but I like bits of humor thrown in to break up the tension and that's that's what's done so well here but then when it gets to the horror stuff it really gets there well by the by the time we use to the third act and everybody knows what they're up against and okay you're probably not going to

get out of here alive let's you know let's see what's good what's going to happen next all that stuff is like edgy or seat type stuff and and I really loved it and I love that one moment one yeah they're talking and it's funny but it's like it's bad too but there was the one girl one of the

guests says I really shouldn't be here this is the other thing and then then the chef asked her a question and he's like um did you go to school or something and yeah for something you should like stood alone and she's like no and he goes ah yeah whatever the hell would you yeah yeah

that's that right just because she was rich he was like that's all that's all it took you know or in his mind you know she was rich and you know privileged if you will but where it goes the performances the story the plot it's just it kept me engaged and when the horror hits it really

does hit and that that that final act and the climax are just fun and exciting and it just just one was when we said grab me like I said from start to finish and as soon as I finish it I came home and I was like this is a movie that I know I'm gonna watch it my wife and daughter I felt

bad that they weren't there with me because I knew they could appreciate it but I knew so little going into it you know that I was like okay we'll see what's it and then I was like oh yeah they're gonna love this movie sure and off as soon as it became available we watched it and um so speaking

of that I'm gonna give you my rating nine out of ten and go on by it if you can yeah that's amazing let me ask you a question Dave all right on did you go out and get yourself a nice fast food cheeseburger after this movie buddy I didn't do that but I had a cheeseburger on my mind for like

three or four days I know yeah I left the theater and drove straight to a cheeseburger fast food place because it looks so good right it's just like wow I think I'll end up going to five guys a couple of days later which out here that's kind of the best place to go yeah burger so but oh man
