Hello and welcome to Japan Explained. I'm Toki and I used to live and work as a tour guide in Japan. This is how half of my almost eight years in the country passed battling with misconceptions about it. Daily battles with cultural myths are pretty much in a job description, so let's say that's the type of fights I choose. But you are here to learn about the show, right?
First of all, let's clear things up. This is not a podcast about history of Japan. There is one already and it's good and it's enough. This is also not a podcast about another foreigner living in Japan. Nope, nope, nope. No sensations and no cool Japan here either. Because cool Japan only exists in the realm of marketing, and I'm much more interested in the real world.
Instead, in this podcast I will take you on deep dives into different aspects of Japanese culture, be it things, events, personalities, food, or anything else really. I will tell you about real geisas and where misconceptions about them came from. About short but eventful history of ramen, About scholars turned demons, about samurai in leather boots, echo friendly monsters, and us, foreigners.
Bring in weapons to help establish peace and peace treaties that started the revolution. Not all at once, of course. We'll look at it one topic at a time. If you want to hear all these stories I just promised, don't forget to hit the subscribe button. Feel free to contact me if you have questions about any of the topics I covered or if you want to suggest a new one.
