Jaguars Happy Hour: Monday, October 19

got a busy show ahead. The Lions Jaguars review plenty to discuss the offensive inconsistencies yesterday, the defense struggled against the run and other areas social questions. Will get to those. Plenty of those came in on Twitter earlier today. We'll go around the a f C South in the National Football League as well. Lions thirty four, Jaguars sixteen. Overall. Feels certainly not good for this Jags team. They've dropped their fifth consecutive game. Head coach Doug Coron after the

game yesterday said, there's disappointment all around. I'm just so disappointed that um feeling whatever it is in your gut that people have, UM, there's a whole there for me and because you know, in my past I've been able to pull through some things and and pull people up and get people to perform um. And I'm doing everything I can to do that, and you know, it's not either a going as fast as I wanted to or

be I'm not getting that done. And and I feel like, you know, I'm the one that's letting down the coaches and the players. And but that's just how I've always looked at think. So, UM, I really want to stay away from the frusstration word um, because I look at it's just I'm just disappointed him myself. Head coach Dug Maron after the game here in Jacksonville yesterday we welcome

in Pete Frisco and Tony Basselli. Now, gentlemen, five straight losses and that's just a well, he didn't want to say the frustration were disappointed as a way he wanted to describe things yesterday Pete by the way that feeling he has in his stomach. You know, it's like the roller coaster feeling. I just got that from Baselli trying to fix his I was wondering what was going on here. I'm trying to do a nice open to the show.

There's rattling shaking going on. What are you doing? Oh my god, I got some setup issues, that set up issues. Did you hear that? Oh? I heard? I was trying to like intro Dugs sound bite. I'm going through the show, rundown. What's happening tonight? I don't believe speak for yourself, okay, I mean, Tony, you're the one rattling your screen around anyway. Disappointing day, certainly for the Jaguars. Five consecutive losses now Pete and another struggle here to a bank field yesterday struggle.

It's not a good team. I mean, some of us said that before the season started, and some of us said they would win eleven games that one out. They're just bad. It's a bad team. Right now. What what do they do well? Somebody come out of that game yesterday and find me something that they did well. One thing. Give me one, Tony. They punted the ball pretty well. Well. That's that's If you're botting the ball pretty well, that means you're not doing a good thing. I mean, they're

not good. I agree, I'm not. I mean, I'm not sure what you want me to say. I mean, I'm with you, they're a bad football team right now. They've given up five straight games of thirty or more points. The last four games, have not even been in the game in the second half, if you're really being honest with itself, especially the fourth quarter. Um, they played teams that either had no wins or one win the last four weeks, and they got beat soundly by all of them.

They're not a good football team. And um, I mean all joking aside. I know I said wins, but be you and I also both had conversations and we knew like this could get go the wrong direction quickly because it's a young football team and it's not a deep football team. It's not like they're a young, deep football team with a ton of talent. They have a bunch of young guys that are unproven, and they have a bunch of rookies are counting on them. They're counting on

kit Chase signed to be a pass rusher. He's not a pass rusher yet, and by the way he should. He is not ready to be a six technique and stand up and stop the run. It gets tackles and tight ends for out of seventy seven plays. I mean, he just it's not like you're asking him to do something I don't think he can do yet. I'm not saying that doesn't mean I don't think he's a good player. I just think you're asking to play a new position that I don't care what anyone tells me. I like,

unless I know I didn't watch all the tape. Maybe there's more tape about there being a you know, straight up defensive end. But he cannot hold up in the run game consistently. No, in an ideal situation, he's an Nicol rusher who comes in and he especially and he's not he's learning how to passers. I still think he's a good players, but you know what, and then their interior it's not good David Bryant's I mean, he just doesn't make plays. I'm sorry. He even even a guy,

even a rotation guy. He's a backup in my opinion. I mean, the way he's going on a good team. On a good team, five is a five like the fourth or fifth lineman on that team. Yeah, he's playing snaps is a backup three technique, right, Okay, so then let's keep going. Then we're gonna go. We're picking this team apart that's what we're doing. That's the reality. We give him the reality. What about the rest of that defensive line? No, I mean, I mean, I'm still a

big believer in Josh Allen, but he's shirt. But here's all you need to know. Let me tell you all you need to know. The ball sheared who who not? Was no one wanted, and you signed on your practice squad because of the new rules and brought him up. Was the most productive defensive line. Then you had rushing the passer. That's all you have to say. Did you watch the tape? Yes, I watched every snap. Did Hamilton make any plays? No? He got you know, he didn't

play great either. Now I think, like I think long term he'll be a good nose. But he's a young player. Got pushed your ramp a little bit at times. Miles play yesterday on the tape. He's not healthy. And then and then he got hurt again. Can't tell himself a little push kart thing with a boot on his leg yesterday. But it sounds like they're gonna try to give it

a go wednesday. See how he is. That's the way why I just, I mean, I would I wouldn't play him this week, No bye week, Give him this week and the bye week and and then you play him in three weeks. For now, he should be healthy and ready to go. He's your best player. Why would you do that? He was not himself out there. It was very obvious he didn't have the you know, the juice that he had in the first part of the season

when he was playing so well. I would not I would did him all right, So let's now, let's go to the secondary. I'll tell you he was playing good again. Sydney owns like I can't think the Eagles cut him like like I remember, like he was gonna be a high first round or something. Then towards the hurt. Yeah, he was hurt. And then he and he was banged up a little bit with them during his time there too.

He played great again, I mean playing really well. He's contest balls, he's he's a good player, Like even on the one on the inside throw to Holiday, he was there to make play great. First of all, let me, you know, I want to be careful because we're involved in the place here. But watching that play, and by the way, Stafford played terrible too. Let's just be he was not very good at all. But did that play. That's what a quarterback with a big arm like. I

don't think Gardner can make that throw. That's a forty yard rowe into a tight window that is perfectly covered. But you can't get I mean, it's thrown so on. It was such velocity in the right spot it's almost impossible to defend. I agree, I mean, you can't make that throw. But again, Sidney Jones played pretty well. Everybody else, everybody else, anybody else, give me something on defense? Anything, nothing.

Supert showed up a little bit. He did. He made a couple of plays, Tin tackles, had the interception off the batted ball later in the game, which was nice. But they did run the ball a bunch of the middle two. Soy, DeAndre Swift look good, but running the ball? Yeah? How about Henderson? How did Henderson black? It's not they're young, They're not good. That's a period. It's the bottom line. I gotta do. I think Henderson could be a good player. Yeah, yeah,

I do too, But they have potential. This year is gonna be is gonna be a disaster. Let's say, let's come. We'll get a little deeper than the defensive later in the show. Let's touch on offense here in the opening segment as well to bounce things out, and that did not go well either. Yesterday, and not much happening in the run game. They couldn't make some plays down the field again with quarterback Gardner Minshew, I threw an interception on a deep ball and lost the ball on a fumble.

A little later heiling some yards. But that's about it. Here's the thing. I give Jay Gruden credit. I was all over him for two weeks. Run the ball, run the ball, run the ball is my whole opening. I said, run it, run run it. He tried to, and the offensive line didn't do their job. They didn't. I think it was the first time this year the offensive line didn't play well. That's a bad defense has been giving a hundred and seventy yards a game. Now. I'll give

them Detroit. They played better than I've seen on tape um and I expected offensive line to really get things going. They did not. Jay tried to stick to it and there was nothing there. Um. I just it's uh And here's the reality. And this is you keep on asking me, is Gardner the guy? Is he the franchise quarterback? And I said, I'm gonna give it sixteen games, right, That's what I've said all Well, the clock is getting sped

up for me a little bit. And this is why the reality is if you look at the history since Gardner Minshew has been the quarterback, if he throws for forty or more times, they to win. And so what it tells me is like he like, at least at this point his careery is still young. So like I'm not killing him. I'm not saying like this is like the final verdict, but I'm not sure he can carry

a teen to victory. I'm not sure you can. Like, I think a lot of other things have to be working well around him, the run game, you know, things have to be kind of like your needs help. He's not he's not ready to say, hey, I can go throw it forty times and nothing else is working, I'll find us a way to get a victory. Now, in fairness, there's not a lot of young quarterbacks that can't do that.

But that's a whole another aside. Look at him and watch it and tell me if you think that's the guy that's the That's all the only thing you have to do is look at it and tell me if you think he's the guy. I don't mean to get you all choked up him on that one. But again I go back. You can watch Joe Burrow, you can watch Dustin Herbert, you can watch the young guys throw it around, and you see the difference. You just see it, and that's why it's not That's why he's not well.

If I had to decide today, if I have to decide today, Pete, just like I said, just like I said two weeks ago when you made me decide, I said, I'm not betting my career on him being the franchise quarterback. Now, you don't have to make the decision today. So let it play out, um, and we'll see where it goes. Let it play out, huh. Let it play out? Why? Why wouldn't you kid? You got another young kid? You think you would go to Luton right now? Not now,

not now, but it might be coming. What What does the record have to be where you go to Luton in ten? Yeah? I actually you're one in ten the last five weeks play Luton. I'd actually make it like one in twelve. I mean one in eleven twelve games. Last last quarter of the season. We're going if you're one of eleven, throw luting out there right, why not see what he got, see what he is and maybe it well. The only thing is, what if he plays well and you get a couple of wins, again, you'll

be able to see some of that. They're trying to try to win games, Tonet. Yeah, but that's because they can't like finish games. But okay, but not about wins. Is he there? Guy? Yes, hey, you'll know. You'll know you're missing my point. Pete, what I said, what if he plays really well and then you some games. I cannot believe this is the first time. I'm forty eight years old, I played this game since I was nine

years old. Like, this is the first time in the history of my life that I found myself aligned with Pete Prisco and thinking about the draft next year. That's how like. That's like, as I think about this team right now and this roster, I'm like, Okay, let's figure out like we need to. It's almost the whole city. I'm gonna have the whole city at the stadium at the next home game, going m h, I gotta somebody said it to us on Twitter. By the way, did you see it? He said, I'm a jet jet jet.

But but like all like all seriousness and I'm serious, let's no, but no, but all serious about I mean, you look at the last four weeks especially, and you're like, okay, like where is the help coming from? There is nothing. They're they're making trades for us teams don't want. They're picking up guys off the scrape. And so as I like, play if you play this forward, as you look at this roster. Now, we just went through defense, We'll do this office. We can do offense next segment if we want,

JP whatever you want. But but like as a team, like I think you want to sit there and say, okay, if we didn't have to add any if we had it, if we weren't allowed to add anything for next year, and we just looked at this roster like do we feel like we have players? Yes, they're young, but we have a group of guys that we can build off of that this year we might win one or two games, but because they're talented and they're gonna have experience, like we're gonna get the six or seven next year and

grow Like is this roster built with talent? Is my question where you feel like you can build on it or is this a situation where you're saying, boy, there's a handful of guys but not much else. We gotta go like hitting the draft for a bunch of years, like a couple of years, get the quarterback, and spend some money free agency. So two or three years down the road, we have a chance to be a special team.

Which what do you what do you think you're closer to down the road, down the road, because well, okay, let's just say they what if Trevor Lawrence was on this team as is right now? How many more will we as? They got two? So they got three wins, So that that tells you then where the issue? Well but it's hard. No, but it's hard to say that Trevor Lawrence through passes and through for feign Or eighty yards to overcome a bad defense. Okay, but well, I

guess here's the thing that I think we can. Let's do this. So the Bengals aren't very good either, right, No, they have an offense, their offensive lines at Trocioes. Is Trevor Lawrence better than Joe Burrow? I think he is. I think he's generated not much no slip. I mean, I mean they played last year in the National Title game, and everyone had taken Joe Burrow after that game. Mhm, they wouldn't have drafted him. They would have said he

played better. Okay, but okay, My point is Joe Burrows one win as a rookie, So a rookie Trevor Lawrence, Wow, much like maybe justin Herbert, Joe Burrow is like, it's gonna give you the hope for the future. But even Pete Manny won the greatest all time, was just atrocious his first year. But you played three winless teams. It was like you're playing Thanks for the reminder. Let's come back on that note. Take the calls out of the equation and the wins those teams have against the Jaguars,

and what's their what's their record? I mean, come on, let's come back in a moment. We've got plenty ahead on the program. The offense struggling again yesterday to find anything consistently. Tony, before we delve into this position by position level, look at the offense. You you've made a point in the first segment about the offensive line probably had the worst

game of the season. Why and how and give us your little bit of a breakdown and who on the offensive line. Well before I get there, Um, I want to say some about Chark real quick in his comments there. He did not look understud on the field yesterday, jp' if you watched it, he did not look like you had the same explosiveness that we've seen um earlier in the year. Now. I appreciate him gutting it out, no

doubt about it. But I think that's part of the reason on the fourteen targets only seven receptions now something were just terrible throws as well. But there one quick thing I want to ask you, guys. I don't know if you saw it, but there was a clip of video clip of one of the receivers. I was it him or somebody saying that when we're open, you gotta hit us. I don't see that. He maybe you should fake news, fake news, Frison figure, I'll find I'll find

it for you, because I saw it yesterday. I was trying to figure out who it was and how it was. Maybe it was edited or you know, I will say chart Chart did say he felt like they were open, but you know, receivers a lot of times always receiver. He's coached and keen thought he was open on every play. Yeah, that's what I said to him. I said that earlier, and like, yeah, of course he thinks he's open. Every

receiver in the NFL thinks are open every play. They've never been covered, never, and and and and like Keenan, Remember Keenan told I'm open every play. I bet he came to the side like every single play and said he was open. Oh, I'd be sitting there like watching, like like with the rest off his lineman, Like look over and they're be Keenan and Jimmy and Mark's ear saying how open they were, And I'd be like sorry for him. So the offensive line yesterday, Tony, where do

we start? Um? Be honest, no, like so ken got hurt, but he started off him been like mental airs early, like the first run, like that he was the first or second run of the game, like mental air communication between John Taylor and and uh a J Cam not on the same page. Three runners coming through, It's like what are we doing? Um? And I think the tight ends were overly physical that got pushed around a little bit. Um. Ben Barts came in. I mean like, so now you're

without a J I thought he did okay. He wasn't terrible. I mean that's he was fine. He was, he wasn't and he worse than any the rest. Um you know, just um, I thought uh Cam was short on his pass sets for the first time, giving a soft edge a couple of times gifts and hits he shouldn't do. He shouldn't be because and he hasn't been all year. They just weren't clean, Like, it wasn't consistent. It wasn't like one guy played like terrible. Um, it's a miscommunication.

Guys on the same page. Guys the last scrimmage unblocked, Um, you know, a couple of like one run stands out. It was a like a a design cutback like unblocked linebacker sitting and they didn't have enough guy. So it's like either the wrong formation or they missed ideed and they should have left. They should have booked with means leave the furthest guy unblocked, but they left one of like the middle linebackers unblocked. You're just sitting there. And

so it was just it was just not great. I thought James might have missed one cut to the back side. I thought there was room there, but I mean, just up front, I don't think they did a very good job at all. There weren't nobody Nobody played well. No, I didn't think so. I don't think they were consistent. You know, I was looking at some of this stuff the other day and I went back and watched it. Lender's grating out well as a pass protector. He's not

grating out very well as a run blocker. In fact, chat Lee graded out as better as a run blocker by PFF than he did. And when I went back and watched the tape, Chatlee did a pretty good job as a run blocker. Yeah, Chatlie did really well in the run game. I thought, so, is that something? I mean that that's clearly or somebody's going to make the move down the road. He makes a lot of money to be that. Would you say, Um, here's my problem

with that. You know, I know what you're saying, Like, if you're gonna be one of the higher paid players, you gotta play at a high level, like higher level than everyone else. And and I don't think Lender's playing poor is he? Is he playing dominant football? He's really good the passage you said, But no, I don't think he's playing dominant football. But I don't think this team is in the position to get rid of like good

football players. You know what I'm saying, Like, you can't just like yeah, like okay, so maybe you're overpaying him a little bit more. Maybe he's not playing up to like the highest level of this contract. But I don't think this team has the can afford just say, hey, well he's he's getting paid as a top five center and he's playing as a top ten center. I'm sorry, but you're the one who said that it might be to three years down the road. So where is he to?

Three years old? Is your eight? I think so he's so he's thirty one? Is that his centers completely like they're like, yeah, well, I mean it's there's a little old seventh years he's he's three years from now, he's thirty one, and then a young quarterback would need him. Yeah, you can't afford to get rid of good football players. You don't have enough guys. Right, You're gonna have to make a decision. You're gonna have to say, Okay, do we keep living I think you make a decision. Do

you keep Linda to keep Cam Robinson? You're not gonna be able to keep both of them, I don't think, well, or do you Ben do enough of guard you and you let go Noral and you but barget left guard. That's a possibility when you pay your left tackle. What did you see from Barge? Um, he was better than I thought. It wasnt be exactly like the tape I saw in camp. I thought he struggled a bit. I think he's a physical kid. He needs to learn a

little bit and keep his uh teeting underneath him. In the past he got run over one time, but that happens. Um like it was like he like he helped mixed it up. He mixed it up. Yeah, he's not afraid out there. That's that's definitely yeah. So I mean I think he has an opportunity. Um, I mean he's not as good as Nora l right now, but how how how bad as a J's injury. He never came back all I heard his left shoulder. I was trying to look on the tape. I couldn't even tell where he

heard it. There was no update today from Maroan, by the way. So but let's you know, so I just don't think and and this leads to the conversation, let's go through the offense of like you guys that you can like who are the blue chip players on the team right now? On offense? On offense, char okay, you talk about and build time out Yeah, okay, well build and keep it. You can't make Like here's the other thing we do in Jackson, Halle, let me just this

is what we have to stop doing in Jackson. We overvalue guys way too early, like way over Like this is what we knew as an organization, as fans, as people on these shows, like all of a sudden, like chanalta star. Okay, wait a second, Chanel had one catch or ten yard yesterday and it's not And by the way, Tony, it's not. We're not talking about blue chip. We're talking about building block. No I know, but here but here's the problem, Pete, Like, I want to make sure we're

clear here. Yeah, Like I do I like Chanel? Yes? Is he a player I want to see more of and like do I think he can be impactful? Yes? Do I think he has the potential to be like really good? Yes? But please stop like we start like throwing a Kwan Bolden and Kwan Bolden is working year had like ninety catches if I'm not mistaken, I mean, like, so I just want to make sure like we're real careful, like being careful, like we can't over value is James

Robinson great pick where we got him. And I think he's a solid player and I think he has an opportunity to do some really good things because of the way he runs his vision. He's good in the backfield and he blocks well. Um, like he's the guy that you can you can build around. But I'm not like, is he a superstar like this, it's not not yet. As the right tackle regressed a little bit the last

couple of weeks. I think he's been better in the run, like physical like he wasn't like he's been He's a physical player, um and I thought he actually passed block better this week than he did previously. He'd be getting up a little bit soft edges and giving up some hits and pressures. But he's a physical player. I mean, I really like him. I mean he like, yeah, getting

rid of him. He's the one you're definitely built right So okay, so on offense right now, we just named him of Shark Channel guys that are gonna be around for the whole thing for the next couple of years. Robinson, whether he's a starter or backup Robinson, right tackle? Where else I'm gonna do it differently, Pete, how about no tight ends? No tight ends? Tell me a position right now after not just don't take this bad Boskins Detroit

so they're one and five after six games. Tell me a position on offense that you wouldn't try if you had an open check book, that you wouldn't try to upgrade either through the draft of free agency next year. Running back because I'm not paying any of them. Okay, um, other than that, everyone, Okay, I would say differently, I wouldn't. I'm not looking for you. I'm not I'm not gonna go right tack. I'm not gonna spend money on a

left tack either, based on you're gonna have to. I'm assuming we keep him, so I'm gonna spend money on him, but he's not going anywhere. I'm saying. I'm I'm looking at guys on this team. So of guys that you could say either resign or they're already under contract next year, which one no, but we're no. I'm not saying. I'm saying you Peoplesko you're sitting here and go Okay, I'm like, I don't want to hear like, oh there a building buck Okay, because here's what you should be doing as

an organization every years. How can I get better at every Like I need to either push the guys to get better themselves or I need to go find something to replace them to get better at that position. As Keelan Cole gotten better. Yeah, he's keeper three Okay, So the question becomes is Shark a legitimate one? I think he has an opportunity I want to see like I thought so too, I still do so Like if if DJ Chark is on the Green Green Bay Packers, he's well, he's not a one because but he as good as

Davante Adams. No, I mean Davante is older. Does he have an opportunity? Could he get to that level? Yes? Yes, yeah, that's what I mean. So like, um, we'll shoot Alan Lozard Like gosh, by the way, why were we talking about that? I was noticing that day the other day another guy, Tyson's playing really well for the Steelers. Tryson is playing really well. Yeah in their in their nickel, My Kidden was here too, here, Mike Hilton was here,

And you know as far as to get better and so that you do you get better like a couple of different ways. One, you

have the talent on your team that's just young. And like I think back in like we had a bunch of young guys. I mean Mark was a young quarterback, but like he was the guy like we knew that he was gonna get better and grow. I mean I was at rookie left tackle. Um, you know, James Stewart rookie. You had a bunch of guys that you know, you know,

really young pieces. And we have some veterans a guy like Jeff Logman and Josh Many that were veterans, Like we could win with these guys at defensive ends and they're good players. And then so you go into the next year. We were four and twelve. We were a good football team by any means, but we had young talent the veteran leadership. And but then we said, all right, what do we have to do to get better for the next year so we could be a better football team.

And so the way you get better is like, Okay, we know, like we have confidence that Mark Wte is gonna get better, so we're not going to adjust the quarterback position. We have confidence that Tony Boselli don't get better. We have confidence you know that James Stewart. But hey, but maybe we need to get a complimentary guy in

nature means. I mean, so you look, you go down your roster that way and you start figuring out, um, who do we count on because they're gonna get better, and who do we where do we need to go replace and give an upgrade? And and so at one of five of you look at this team is so young, and we I mean we are the young this team in the NFL. We have very little depth and we're not very good right now. So the question is you're not gonna be able to fill any spots for this

year like anything that's significant. So like where do you start and say, Okay, we have confidence in these young guys that they can be the future, and we don't really need to address that in offseason. We have our draft capital going next year, and we have money in free agency. We need to address it in these areas.

But but Tony, when that year, one of the things that they did that year was the admitted a mistake because they drafted you, and then they drafted de Marco and he was supposed to be the right tackle and they realized he couldn't play right tackle, so they went out and spent money the next year to get Leon. That's right, now, Now, that's right. You have to address the stakes too. No, no, that's what I'm saying. Sometimes

young players aren't the right guy. And like Brian de Marco, they said, he can play guard, he can't play tackle, so we're gonna kick him inside and we're to go get the uncertaci. And now why they do that because they said, there's a guy free agency that we can afford that's gonna make us better, So let's go get that and then we can with this piece here and we're a better team because of that. So that's the thing you have to Yeah, you know, you know what

great great organizations, dude, be they have bit mistakes. Quick before it's too late. You're right before it's too late. By the way, I just called Vegas your ninety five team was favored by eleven over this team on a new trophy, because I don't want to make this a comparison and like the old guys, I'm just trying to get like, as you think about I'm thinking about this veteran and this your team had more veterans. Tam, I'm not trying. You're missing my point, Peter. I'm not saying

what team is better. I don't care about what I say. How do you get out of this hole? We win five games two years ago, six games last year, and we're on track right now that not very many people outside of the people in that building. I think you're gonna win more than one, right, I mean, that's the reality. And so the question is what do you need to do so that you are competing to go to the playoffs and competing to win a championship, and competing to be able to you know, year and a year out.

Not these wants. Nobody wants to hear that game. Nobody wants to hear this. But first and foremost, you need to realize that this year is a lost year for everybody. It's about getting better. That's all that it's about. It's about c. J. Henderson becoming a better corner. If he gets beat over the top and they lose a game, that shouldn't be the issue. It should be now the next time you go out, what did you learn from that? How can you get better? Same with the pass rushers?

What kind of moves can Chase On learned to rush the pastor? That's what it's all about. It's not about wins. The winds aren't coming. I mean, I'm gonna I'm gonna be the realist here and be as honest as they come. I don't see him winning another game. I don't now. They might. They might win one. They might beat the Texans at home. They might beat one team. But they're not winning more than two or three that much. I know the sched Jel says. So they're not a good team.

So the reality is grow get better. Players individually have to continue to get better. Okay, but great, I agree with that, So where can they get better? But with the players they have here and where where the physicians where you have to say, we have to go find someone else. Well, if Sidney Jones continues to show some growth, you have Henderson you have earned in whoever the nickel corner when he comes back if he didn't play that well when he was playing, though, Hayden, Um, you have

some young safeties that need to go. Maybe it's time to start playing those guys more. Would you agree? Yeah? Maybe what about Josiah Scott kid from Michigan State? But me nicol right, that's why. And then then we drafted the fourth round because he's a nickel, right, So play him there, play him at nickel um, then you go,

you know, play these guys are starting to play. The young guys are Hamilton's playing more snaps than he was planned on playing correct, When does Shack Quarterman start getting Look well, I mean just okay, here's the field is gonna be around for three more years. Like he's got a control. Okay, shock Order been better than Schoberg. I don't know, you might be better in the run game. You never know. That's what the kind of the book

on him was. But again, but you know what I'm saying, because at some point you have to admit where you are. And I think that's what like, you know what it's like, um, not to make light of you know, uh being an alcoholic, but this is true, like an a A what's the first step in a like you have to admit, like

you have an issue. I think like at some point you have to look at yourself in the mirrors and organization say we're not very good and I it's time to stop saying that we got this and we got that, and we can do this and whatever. We're one of five. We're getting beat by the worst teams in the NFL, and which makes us the worst team the NFL. Okay, and and so we so it's time to say, like we need to like go like, let's know, let's be honest, like we're not good here. We're not good here, and

we need to improve. And hey, by the way, we need to ramp up the pressure a little bit. Hey, young guys, you gotta play better like in this this year. Start getting like working on your stuff because next year there's gonna high expectations for you or we're gonna find someone to replace you. Tight End is a bad position in the NFL right now, it just isn't a good position.

But is there one going forward? Is there one fight end that they have on their team right now that you would say, I'll say this Iford has blocked better and then he got hurt with his neck yesterday, and I think when when he went out, they heard that hurt them. Um, if you look at the season, I think I first walked much better than I. But he's not a building. He's not a guy that's gonna be around here in three years. Probably too. They've had hopes

for Oliver, but he's been banged up both years. Right, So the book on Iford was he was banged up all the time. I mean right, that's when they got him because he was banged up all the time. What about the kid for Georgia Tech, it's early man, that's like, that's one of those guys. Start playing them more. Get him out there, let's go, let's find out what you got in and the run game. Does he block? I thought he was just okay yesterday, Yeah, because that with

the book on him was that he could block. But yeah, no, but he's young. Just the first real time, like we'll get him out there, rolling out there play, right, if that's what you have to use the rest of this time. I agree you have to, like you like, this is time because and I'm not saying you have to make these decisions now, like we're just talking about it because

this is what we do. Um, but like you have ten games as an organization, and whether it's gonna be David Doug next year or it's gonna be a whole new group whoever, it is, like like the next games, you're evaluating every position and you're building for the future because I don't see this team doing anything this year. Let's take a one in fifteen, it's gonna be a total rebuild, total total. Everybody's gone. Come on, let's be real. I mean, if you look, they might find, they might find.

They might fire you. I'm not hired by the right higher might fire to liven up things, get you off the broadcast, to bring me back and put me in the booth an independent. Now for the Jagson and it's off to l A next week to face the Chargers and then bye week. The bye week in the Chargers game got flip flopped there last week by the NFL. John Brown missed a kick yesterday. It was his debut as a place kicker at any level high school, college pro.

He was a kickoff specialist for a very short time at Louisville, but he had never attempted a placement until yesterday, and he made his first one. He didn't make a second one. He didn't get another chance the rest of the day. In the field goal department, he first of all, the kid, the kid has a huge leg. Let's watch them and warm up. Um. But here's the deal. I'm just I'm taking over and producing this segment. We're spending more, no more than three minutes on the kicker. I mean, listen,

here's the deal. Uh, this is our fifth kicker. It's been a disaster. Um. It makes you appreciate Lambeau. He's really dang good at what he does and the rest of the mark. Um. I think the kid John Brown actually has a chance probably be a pretty good kicker one day, if if someone will stick with him. Because he has a huge leg and hes needs reps. Poor kid hasn't done much of it. Um, but I think, I mean he has he has real talent because he can, you know, just bang it. Um, but he needs a

lot of reps. And it's unfortunately that right now it's a disaster the kicking game. And so hopefully Lamba gets back. I wouldn't play Lambeau this week because if he goes out there and injures it again, what are you doing? Do you have a bye week? Used the bye week? Rollout the kid again, um, John Brown, see what you can do and then get Lamba back for the stretch run. If he has a big leg, there's a chance you can develop them. So even so, keep him on the

practice squad. I mean sometimes guys, And you've seen this before, Like Ryan suck Up was banging field goals in from fifty something yard yesterday. We've seen him yank him all over the place. Sometimes kickers just get into a rhythm for a couple of years, right, I mean, Lambeau was picked up off the scrap heat essentially. Now he can't miss, right, So you guys get into a little bit of a rhythm. So what I would do is I would I'm with you, Tony.

Let the kid kick this week. See what he can do. Now. If he yanks too and pushes one right, then then you know he's not the guy because that that tells you can't make field goals. As big as his leg is, that means you can't make field goals. Dug Bron said today, Josh Lambeau could give it a go Wednesday or Thursday on the practice field. Just see why he is and just see where he is. That's what he said today.

I'm just telling you what he said. It's not like that the kicking game is gonna Field goals aren't gonna matter. If the seats are they late in the game, late in the season, you've seen them having the game at Baltimore where they'll need Lambo to make a field goal open? Is that? What is that what you're saying to Zel, you're saying that, you're saying the Baltimore game won't be close. I mean pick goes through the schedule and pick one that will be closed. Actually, I can see the Chargers

And I saw it the other night where Florida State was playing, and uh, and I'm just watched the Chiefs come running out and I watched the Chiefs come running out of the tunnel and Patrick Mahomes is that like a almost a full sprint from the tunnel all the way down the field to the other end zone. When I came out of the state, I was a slow jog and I got to the bench as quick as I could to go sit down. And these guys are sprinting the whole length of the field.

What's the point. Yeah, I don't get that. And you, by the way, came out of your tunnel on your bench was right there most of the Yeah, I just like to walking right there, sit down. I get like two pass sets and sit down and drink water and wait till the national haven't they already warmed up already to that's a long run, Like I'm not doing extra wind sprints. No, certainly not. Now your hips can't take

it anymore. Of yesterday thirty four or six team Lions over the Jaguars, the offensive course struggled to find any consistency, missed some plays down the field. From the quarterback you just heard from Gardner, there's a little bit of frustration. The defense could not stop to run at all. Yesterday. Jandre Swift put together some big time runs for the Lions in that game. So now what on to Los Angeles?

To face the Chargers with Justin Herbert, and yesterday the Lions outgained the Jacks four oh three to two seventy five. The Jacks turned in over a couple of times, lost the time of possession battle and it was just a Lions controlled game throughout. Also this week, the Jaguars will have to continue to operate under the NFL's Intensive Protocol.

It's expected to be an effect through Friday after the practice squad positive COVID nineteen tests that came in late last week and a few changes because of that new protocol. This week, all player meetings will be held virtually. The weight room and locker room will have capacity limits at old times I play air activity in the facility will will be meals, lifting, medical and rehab, and of course practice on the practice field. Everything else is away from

the building or virtual UM. The practice or walk through allowed in the practice field or the flex field will have daily test continuing for all players UM and negative results on the previous day are a must before they are allowed into the facility at all each day. So a little bit different. They're still doing the mask thing that they were doing UM to begin with, but a little more stringent on those protocols. This week after that positive test on Friday, you know what they should do.

Everybody in the NFL should get Alabama is testing so that you can as soon as your test positive or you can go three nets three negatives. Pete. Guys, that's one of the things that's weird. Every week we're gonna get this now positive test, positive test, positive test, and sometimes it's just contact tracing that that's a red flag. And the question the positives and how many guys are sick. The guys aren't sick. A lot of them aren't even sick.

They have no symptoms. Nick Saban never had any symptoms. But because he never had it, it was a false positive. You don't understand science. I mean, the reason they take the multiple tests afterwards to prove that the test they took was a false positive. Saven never had it. He could have had it, and then he had no. He could have no. You can't go he literally tested positive two days later, he was negative, negative, negative. It was

a false positive. Why they do it? Please? You should stop talking at this point about this really, because yeah, the Jaguars had the positive that was a positive on the practice squad and then all the contact tracing around is why they put twelve practice squad players like you and I are tracking it, right, Pizza A little confused? But did Cam Newton have did he have a positive test? Did he have this? Did he have it? Yeah? He

don't war two? Yes, was back a week later, right, No, ten days he was backcl Yeah, ten days, that's longer the week. What I'm saying is, what I'm saying is guys are getting They're gonna have a ton of test positive tests. When you're testing guys on a every days, there's gonna be positive tests that you have to distinguish between is real positive tests like a Cam Newton is

Stephan Gilmore and false positives like happens every week. All right, you don't mean to go down this path with this conversation. The point was the protocols are different this week, is the whole point I was saying. I didn't read where Nick Saban had a false positive, so maybe I was maybe I misunderstand. That's why they That's why he took three straight and testing because if you the protocols in the SEC are actually stronger the NFL. If you test

And now it's a five game slide. And I know we've talked a lot of detail about the big picture down the road and the years to come about this team.

But here's a scenario for you. I'm just gonna throw this out and let you guys toss this one around. You might just spike it back in my face. But what if the Jags go out to l A. They get their act together, they come through, some young guys play well, they get a couple of takeaways, three four takeaways, and some scoring opportunities. They win the game in l A. Okay, snap the slide there, two and five. Then they have the bye week, they get some guys healthy, maybe they

come back coming back home. They Houston Texans are coming to town, they go through, and they win that game. That would be by my math three and five. So would you feel differently at three and five about this team that's getting better and healthier in a two or three weeks stretch after a couple of WS Does that change the rest of the schedule for you, guys? No, you're not beating the Packers, Steelers, the Ravens unless there's

major injuries on those teams. The Browns are the best rushing defense offense in the NFL, and you don't have a defensive stuff, then I don't think either. Um. The Colts are gonna be fighting for the playoffs, you will not be. UM, So I think that's a tough one. Um. Maybe the Vikings, because they stinking Kirk Cousins might throw

to you ten times. Um. I still think there's a lot of wins on the schedule, even in your Pollyannic view of life, which I love, you know me, I'm you know, sunshine pumper, you know, you know, you know, unicorns and rainbows all around. I love it. I love you being positive. It's great, but it's not gonna change much about how I feel about the team. OUT think they're they're gonna be lucky to win two games, three games. I mean seriously, and I'm not. I'm just being a realist.

I don't want to, you know, rain on any parade or anything like that. I would say this game, I said before the season four, I don't think they're getting the four and Pete, I'll say it this way. Um or JP I'll spike it back at you. Tell me what you've seen in the last four weeks it gives you confidence that they can go out to l A and get to win. I'm I'm kind of with you. I was giving you the scenario. Okay, no, no, you don't get to do that. You don't get just throw

something out there. And this defending you're the defense is given up thirty points the last five weeks. So the defense hasn't been hasn't proven that they can slow it down on a sixte minute basis game the games. So there's one and three of the last four games the offense is scored in the teams. That's not enough. They haven't executed enough on the offensive side. So, yes, it's going to be a big hill. You're missing my point. How can they win? You said they can win in

l A and then they can beat the Texans. And my question to you is, yes, what have you seen that makes you gives you any confidence you're gonna go out to l A and win the game? Uh, there's not a lot, I'll be honest with you. But if they go out there and get takeaways and take advantage of those short field opportunities, then you can probably go win any football game against Team X, not just the Chargers, right.

I mean, that's that's what it's gonna have to be for this the question, the other question, is it a good thing? Well, that's a different a j P. The last two weeks, the Chargers scored any one against Tampa. In Tampa, which is the best defense in the NFL, they scored thirty one. Um, no, I'm not calling a win. That's not what I'm saying. I'm just saying they were in New Orleans against a very good defense and they

scored seven. And my guesses, you're gonna you have to go play without Miles Jack and they hobbled or just getting back onto the field, Josh Allen and so listen, there's no bigger Jaguar fan than wants them to find a way to get it done. But if I look at it, I'm having troubled putting together, even in my Pollyannic world, a story that I can believe that gives me hope that they get it done. That they got

the Gus Bradley revenge game. I didn'tknew that with irritates. Defensively, yeah, they didn't get any sacks yesterday rarely got pressure on Stafford. How are they gonna do it next week? And by the way that the Lions were giving up like the most pressures in the NFL. Bad line correct, they turned the Bengals and Lions lines and the good lines and like you just shaking the Bengals that that cant gets abused in every game except when he played the jack

So listen to jam. I get it. But I think the bigger and boy, it's not a fun position to be in. I mean, and and maybe I would change if they find a way to go beat the Chargers, maybe I will have a different feeling. I'll be more upbeating everything. But after watching when I saw yesterday, I just it's it's hard because they didn't play well and and the and what really was frustrating for me is groups that I think they have talent didn't play well.

And I'll start with the offensive line. Like if I'm you know, the more I think about it, if I were breaking down position groups, the offensive line probably is the most talent of this entire team. In their meeting room, That's what I said at the beginning. You know, they should be the best, they should be leading this team. And I said it before the Detroit game. I said, this game needs to go through the offinitive line in

the running back and they didn't deliver. I mean, because if you could, I mean, Pete, tell me what tell me a unit that has more overall talent than the the the offensive line on this team. No, you're right, the line is the most talented, although when the receivers most sorry, you're right, you're right there. Now, the lines are most talented. And for them not to play well against which is not a good Lions defense, that was bad seventy in the ground. Yeah, well the Texas up.

The Texas given up a hundred seventy on the ground too. No, no, no, no, no, they were not no, no, they were given. They were last. They were last until they had a good game against us and they went to thirty and the Titans. We're giving up like one six on the ground and the Titans only rush for like to fifty on them. Let's come back. So that's my that's my struggle here. Like, I get what you're saying, and I would like to figure out that story too of how they can get

it going. But but but I'm having a hard time I'm being honest, and I think the people listening need to be honest. You know, you know what it's gonna happen. Is it coaching execution or quarterback play? If it's quarterback, when should the team take a look at Luton? It feels like Mitchew stock dips every week. Yeah, I mean, I think it's I think it's overall execution. And here's the thing you have

to remember. The first couple of weeks or no preseason, some teams are trying to figure out what the heck Jaguars we're gonna do? And you know, what were they gonna do with this? Do you know offensive Corna or j Gruden. They can go back and look at Washington stuff and maybe some uh Cincinnati stuff, but they wanted to understand, you know, kind of how you know, what the game plan was and how they were going to

attack them. Um, and then it always happens, I mean usually once the season gets owned, teams get a book on you. They understand how to stop you, how to slow you, what your weaknesses are. UM, and I think you know it's been effective. And I and on top of it, I don't think the guys are playing very well. Don't think the quarterbacks playing very well the last few weeks. And I think that's a big portion of it, a

big part of it. And agree and last thing all that, I think in the two games against the Texans in the Bengals, I think Jay Gruden got away from the run way too early. So that's the one coaching part ill put on it. I think he abandoned it in the third quarter when they got down and try to put the game on Gardner Minshew. And I don't think guarder Mitshew has is ready for that to happen at this point in his career. I I think it's a

combination of everything. And and one being the quarterback hasn't played great. Uh. He had some injuries at receiver with Shark. Uh. The offensive line, as Tony mentioned, wasn't as good uh Sunday Uh. And they're just not very good on offense. And and we you thought going into the seasons the offense would have to sport on the points, and early on it looked like they would. But I think they I think the regression is there and if they continue to play that way in there one and ten, I

think you have to play Luton. I think it has to come. It has to happen. You wouldn't do it at the bye. No, no, too early. I knew if you're one in eleven, one in four games. Yeah, and the difference is one. The kid has a huge ar, but can he can he harness it and use it? I mean because Luton has Luton has a big arm, don't you. That's why if you put Luton's arm on midshow that back of a quarterback. I mean some of the camp practices we were at this year, he was

Yeah, but you're gonna scared people tell you what offensive lines are in a lot less sleep to night before the game. And it would also make it easier for Alan and the edge guy. Yeah, Josh Allen's like, wait a second, I got a guy, a quarterback drifted towards me in stead of stepping up right.

was one of the most underrated in the weekend. Did you see that one? How are you had someone out there to stop the clock with one. Yeah, that was brilliant. He's a good coach and you know Arthur Smith is a good coordinator. Yeah, they're they're well coached. And guess what, they've got good players. Now it'll be interesting no tail of one. When yesterday a couple of fourth quarters scores and early fourth quarter touchdown Rivers to Doyle and then a field goal late. I love Philip Rivers. He's look, everybody was

killing him and rightfully so he knew it. He wasn't playing well, but he comes out after the game, he lights him up. He had two it in fifty yards passic.
