Shadrick Tony was Selly here in Jacksonville, Pete Priscoe down in Fort Lauderdale, coming off the bye week? Pete? What's going on? How are you? What'd you was doing your bye week? I don't know what that is. I went to Boston to watch Florida State Boston College play. Oh, no kidding. I bet that's a nice weekend. Uh, it was fun. Watched my son's play and it was a good win. He

played well and it was fun to watch. He starting now? Is he starting now? Yeah? He starts the center yeah. I remember he guy got hurt and he went in. I wasn't sure if he was still starting. He won the uh every he won the job and starting now congratulations not good. Yeah, it's fun. It was it was cold, but I mean, have you spent much time in Boston. It's a great it's a great city. I mean, just a fabulous city. And and uh in Boston College is such a cool campus. You know, stadium right on campus.

People just northeast. It's just cool. It was a cool place. And uh, I didn't realize until I got up there. But this is a name that Pete Risco remember Pete Mitchell his number retired or uh not. He was put up into the uh yeah, in the stadium the number, but ring honor, the ring of honor. So he was so tailgated with Pete and his family before the game, and then uh at halftime he was recognized. So it's cool. That's awesome that a video Tom Coughlin video at halftime.

So I cringed, you know back like you can't get away from that. Pete and I are laughing ton old coach Coughlin story. So that was fun. It's pretty cool. Did you did you make your way onto the Italian North End. Over there at all while you were there. Um, we went we ate Italian one night on Newberry Street. I don't know if that's considered. Yeah, the food was just so good. I thought you were starting that diet. It took a pause this week when you're on the road.

Just the the antipasta platter was just funny, the bread, the pasta, and the best part was so my wife. It was just my wife and I went up and we're gonna meet my son Friday night at the Team hotel afterwards, and he had texts me. He says, Dad, bring me some food because he knew I was going to Itali you and so I said okay, And so instead of ordering him a meal, we just ordered a bunch of food, knowing that we'd have a bunch of leftovers, and just tried a little bit of everything. It was

pretty good weekend right there. What did I do? I sat around the first couple of days, and then Saturday night was the big benefit concert for St. Michael, Michael Special very special with the headliners with Van Boy. We saw your picture with the Van Zants, we saw you big name drop are you? It was pretty neat That was a great show down an ours park, packed house, and then um, we'll cook out. Yesterday watched a lot of football and it was a good bye weekend, Pete.

How was your bye weekend? What did you do? I worked? What are you talking about? By weekend is the only uh, the only disappointing thing for my by weekend is and we I went back and forth with my wife. Do we fly back Saturday night after the game right afterwards and get home late so I could be home Sunday to watch football all day? Where do we stay in Boston for the night. I wanted to stay in night the night in Boston and catch the six am flight

back so I can get back for football. And she said, no, that's not gonna happen. We're not doing that. So we slept in and caught a flight where I was on the plane for all the one o'clock games and then get back to the four o'clock games. Miss you, missie. I know I saw that. Man, I was really disappointed.

The TVs. You know, I was on Delta and they did have we had TVs and but the only game, uh that they were showing on the plane live was the Jets Giants game, which was it actually ended up being a pretty good game, I know, but it's not that I mean, I didn't care like I want to. How about the Titan Chief's game. That would have been a good one, great game, great ending, good game. We'll break all the games down. Coming up, we'll go around

the a FC South as well. Here's what's coming up on the program today, by Weeks over the stretch run. Coming up, Nick Foles coming back to the lineup. He's scheduled to speak with the media on Wednesday. We'll talk a little defense as we'll see where that group stands going down the stretch. AFC playoff picture, I don't know if it's quite coming into focus yet, but it's more muddy than ever this week, right, So it's not alive. That's the questions, social media questions and around there's only

you know, there's only a handful of teams that aren't alive. Actually, everybody else is kind of in it, That's what I mean. I mean, the US aren't in it, and the Dolphins aren't in it. Who else isn't it? The Bengals. The NFC is more defined, there's more teams out of it. For the n f C. It is a It's the wild, wild West, so Jags don't have to worry about it. Tony already said they're running the table. Yeah, that was gonna follow up on that. Are you sticking with your

seven game lock, Tony? I lost the key, baby, it's gone. There's no key to be found. Unlock those locks. Seven in a row. Six, seven, okay, good? Seven? Yeah, we're sticking to that. You're not more concerned about the Raiders game after last week? I feel more confident than ever. Well, you should feel more confident about the Chargers game, but

less confident about the Raiders game. I feel very good about where we sit the next two of the critical ones, the two division games back to back on the road. One of those division teams wasn't very good yesterday. Yeah, but they're gonna get a bunch of guys back who are hurt. Last yesterday against the Dolphins that we're talking about. The Colts, another team was good, and the Titans beat the Chiefs in the game that the Chiefs find The

Chiefs have found ways to lose this year. Remarkably, every team in the division beat the Chiefs except for us UM. By the way, here's one for you. If the playoffs started today, the Steelers would be in the Steelers are as JP and I and Joe to scust before because I'm doing that game Thursday night, Cleveland Pittsburgh. There it's the uh, it's the throwback Steelers. It's like defense wins the day for the Steelers. And a trade that I was so against when it happened, trading on one for

making Fitzpatrick. I was wrong. He makes them so much better him and the additions to him and Devin Bush to that defense. They are really good, I mean really good. And their schedule is easy. Man. They got the Browns twice, the Bengals, they got a favorable schedule. Yeah, to your point, Pete, the playoff picture, you know, there's a lot of teams in there. Of course, Division leaders, Patriots, Ravens, Texans, Chiefs,

and the wild card. Today if it ended today, which it never does, but if it did, would be the Bills and the Steelers and the playoffs and then all those teams on the writer and the hunt that does not include the Bengals, Jets, Dolphins. That's where I cut off the ground and I would actually take away the Broncos and the Browns. I don't think they're real I gotta run the table. I think it's the anyone in the Charges that four and six tough but are still

in it. I think the teams have a legitimate chance at the playoffs. Are the teams that four and five are better? I think us and everyone up if you're looking at the graphics, would be the Jaguars. That tightens the Colts and the Raiders. Chargers and the Raiders are alive in the division. That's fair. That's fair. That's a division that is very tight. Um. So I guess yeah, you keep keep the Charges in there. But I don't think the Broncos of the Browns any realistic chance of

making the playoffs. No, I don't either. Okay, so that would make five teams out of it officially, well not officially officially. Actually, they're all officially still alive. Everyone's officially alive. If the if the Jets and the Sam Darnold's and the Jets are gonna run the table and getting the playoffs, did he really he's pulled up all so they got they have so they're gonna win the next five he's saying, yeah, But did he lock it? Next six, six, seven, next seven.

They're two and seven, have seven games left. So Donald did not lock it though. That's the key for this thing. So that I don't think nine and seven gets into the problem. That's a real problem. You don't think nine and seven. No, not with this, like, okay, you're an example. Just the Raiders. Next two games Bengals, Jets. Okay, so that's two wins seven, That's what I'm saying. I don't think you got to win ten. Ten gets you in. Well, if they run the table and get seven, they're gonna

get more than ten. Right Who the Jaguars, Yeah, we're gonna eleven. We're gonna already. I've already said we're gonna be the number because I think the Texans are gonna win eleven. I think we're gonna win eleven. I think we'll be the top wild card. See, oh you've changed the right, changed that dude last week. I just the Texans worry me. I think the Texans are six and three. Do they finish five and two or four and three? I mean they have a tough schedule. They do hide.

We had Carlos Hide on our set yesterday. What's he saying? One game at a time. I'm talking that. Tell him to come join me in the media world where you just talking about big picture. I'll be talking draft pretty soon here. Oh no, we're not going come on. No. My point is saying i've i've I've jumped so far in the media. So I used to be the one game at the time. Now I'm talking about running seven in a row. Yea and one more loss and you will be talking draft. No, no, no, no. Once we

can't get to ten. I mean, so if it if it ends up at nine, I just don't think nine gets in. I don't think nine gets in this year. It might get in, is like a tie breaker type of situation. I don't know, Pete. Look at I mean, go back to that graphic and you look at the teams. You have the Bills at six and three. So they got good now, I mean you look at them, and they lost to the Brown yesterday. Yeah, but on the road, it's not an easy place to want are they getting

Are they getting to nine? Are they getting to ten? Well, they well, they have two more that they're gonna win, the Dolphins and the Jets. So it's eight. Look now, the Dolphins are winning games all of a sudden. Yeah, but not very good. Um, play hard. I mean we're getting to we're gonna have eleven, so it doesn't matter. But here's the here's their games. The Bills games at Miami, they're gonna be easy. Home against Denver, that's pretty easy.

At Dallas. Okay, I got two wins so far home against Baltimore, two wins at Pittsburgh, two wins at New England two wins. And then the Jets to close out the seas. They might only get the three nine. Yeah maybe the Bills. Wow, maybe, h m hmm. The Raiders scare me, I'll be honest with you, because the Raiders schedule is a joke. The Raiders. The Raiders should be the one team that people look at and they say, oh, they're not that good, but their schedule is a joke.

I mean, think about it. This is where you, Pete, this is where you if you're the Jaguars, just win. If you win the next seven, you're in correct, Well you locked it up, so I don't even have to play. That's my point. Where there's the Raiders schedule starts, telling starts the playoff. Think it's now boys, because we're going Bengals. Bengals at home at the Jets at the Chiefs to home against the Titans. They're not gonna be the Tits at home. They're not very they don't. The run defense

isn't very good at anyone. The Titans play who they can run the ball against. They win home against the Jaguars, that's the lost. They have two wins at the charge. That's two winds still crocos. So maybe yeah, three, So maybe nine gets in. Maybe I can we talked into nine. You just talked yourself out of your own argument. Somehow it doesn't matter? Does My whole point is it doesn't. How do you say that left How do you say the backup left tackle's name? I don't make up words,

You know, we were focused on on doing this, and then we're focused, you know and just really building it up into um, building up the reps, building up the the amount of speed around him. I guess that's probably the best way, you know, because early on obviously we don't want anyone around him, you know, we don't want any setbacks. Um. And then we just started, you know, putting him on a move,

doing a bunch of different things. And you know, um, he's he's up to speed as far as where he should be physically and throwing and all of that. So we're not going into this week, um limiting anything that he should do. That's head coach Duck Marone today discussing nick Foles in his return. He is on the active roster last week officially, and he will start this week against the Indianapolis Colts. I'm j P. Shadwick. That's Tony

Big concern for me with Nick Foles coming back is the first few hits because anytime like that's the one thing you can't practice. And he had the carbone, and I just think back to probably four years ago when Romo came back after the broken car bone, came back during the season, and like that first game, he took a hit and rebroke it. Now,

I don't think he had surgery to repair it. I think they just let it heal and didn't Nick h Yeah, surgery. So you know, that's the one concern you always have. And I think everyone will be holding their breath a little bit on the first couple of hits that he takes. Well, yeah, protect him, right, No, that's obviously Pete. Thanks for the news flash. Yeah, you want to protect the last time I checked. Last time I checked that the defensive line gets paid too, and at some point he's going to

get hit. Yea behind the greatest offensive lines in the history of this game, sooner or later, the quarterback gets hit. So you're concerned that he's going to reinjure it. I think that's the natural concern. You got, gardnerments you behind him, So go play. Oh I'm not I'm not going to change the way I call plays. I'm not gonna change anything I do. But you're I'm not concerned about him coming back with rust. I'm not concerned with him coming

back understanding what to do. I mean, this is a guy who who's played his best football off the bench, by the way, and so none of that concerns me. If there's one concern I would have is just like the injury being fully healed and that first couple of hits. Now he's been cleared and he had the surgery and they took their time and he's so there's probably nothing to be worried about. But I think human nature, like that's the one thing I'm looking forward to seeing him

play this week, I really am. And will they do things differently with him at all, Tony d thing, it's a great question. I mean, he's not gonna run around as much, but we're gardener like extended plays and did things like that. I don't think that. I mean, that's

not Nick Foles as much. But then at the same time, you go back to the first game he had, and he wanted the first big first down on the uh A dig round of eighteen yard into Chris Conley, was he shook off the rush, stepped up, avoided it and through a dart and if you go back to his time in Philly, I mean he does have mobility. Yeah, he played in uh uh Kelly's uh what's the chip Kelly's offense where he had to move zone, read and do stuff. And so it's not like this guy is

a statue. I think he has more mobility than you think. I don't think he'll see as much of it because I think he'll have a better uh. I don't want to say comfort, because I think Gardner was very comfortable and that I think he'll see the progression sooner and quicker than a young player did like Gardner, And so I think he'll maybe see a little bit more preciseness from him. But maybe can they give him more just because of his uh, his experience, you would think. So

it'll be interesting to see. Somebody asked, somebody asked me, sorry, JP, somebody asked me at our place, which receiver will benefit most from him being back. It's a great question, right. I mean him and Kindly had a little thing going in the free season and training camp and all that. We saw that because they've worked together before. And then Chart caught the long touchdown on opening day, from him and can get deep down the field. We know that

pretty good deep ball that Um that falls throws. So I think the biggest issue that I'm curious to see is what do they do at the middle of the field because no tight ends have really have come to the forefront since so Shaughnessy got hurt. Shaughnessy is still the leading catcher for tight ends this roster. He hasn't played for since Denver, and so it's like, where where does that production? You know coming who owns the middle of the field? Is it d D? Can they get

d D going from the slot? He's back, he's healthy. Um, that's the That's the thing that I'm most curious about, because you look at Nick's career. He likes the tight end. He likes working in the middle of the field, like the slot receiver. Yeah, he likes the slot guys too, So that's gonna be interesting. So maybe d D. I think the one thing we've seen and from Gardner is he's indiscriminate when it comes to who he's gonna go to. You know, I don't think there was one guy leaned on.

I mean, Chark was having the biggest year, but he was winning outside winning down the field. I would expect this kind of same thing from Nick Foles. I think he'll go where the offense takes him. Does it open them up? Doesn't open up the running game a little bit more? If that you know a game or two, if it's pushing it ball down the field a little bit on offense and they gotta go cover guys, then here comes for that. You would say, yes, But here's

my concern. What did the Saints due to them? Remember this too deep? So if it's too deep, there's no more there's no more favorable run front than you can get. What did the Texans do? They did a lot of split safeties too, I safeties. There's no more favorable run front that you can get. So the line wasn't winning. Then in those scenarios when you're when you have too deep safeties, you have I think it's the line and

back tight ends. I think it's all together. But yeah, I mean you have to put the I mean of an offensive lineman. We always felt like it was too deep. It's on us. We gotta control the line of scrimmage. So I don't know if it's gonna open up the run more. Um, maybe but we've we've seen teams respect the pass and and try and play you know that man underneath too high safety looked quite a bit Cover two just to I safeties. You saw the Texans that were running a lot of Cover four, which is a

split safety looks playing zone four across um. Those are fronts you'd like to be able to run the ball against. So they gotta, they gotta they have to run the ball better. I don't think there's any question about that. Even though they've had moments where they run it pretty well,

they gotta be better at it. Yeah, I mean, I I goes back to I was having a conversation with somebody in the building today actually about it, and I'm convinced watching the first nine games, watching college football this year, watching the NFL, the teams that can run the ball, the teams that can control the line of scrimmage, those are the teams that win at the end of the day. You have to be able to do that in this

league today. Otherwise you just allow defense is to tee off and do too many things if you can't run the ball. I mean, you look at I mean, you look at the Patriots. The Patriots when they're at their best. They're running the ball. Look at the playoff run last year that Sony Michelle and I mean I did a number of the games and Sony Michelle had I can't remember x amount of touches and over I think seventy five yards. They won every game something like that. You know,

you look at the rams. The rams were built on the running the ball, play action pass. The Saints, everyone talks about Drew Brees, Michael Thomas, great players they had. They had one of the highest run pass percentages ratios in the NFL. Well, here here's your here's your rushing leaders in the NFL. Right now, you ready, the Ray the Ravens pretty good, the Niners, really good, Vikings, good Texans, good Cowboys until last night? Okay, Seahawks, Anthers. Yeah, all

teams with winning records. You've yet to get a team with with a non winning record. Every one of those teams is in the playoff hunt. In the hunt. Yeah, but when you get to number nine, you know who the ninth ranked rushing team is in the league. No, Jackson Jaguars. Okay, well, where is the first team with a none? That's the first thing with a non winning record? Yeah. But my point is it's the teams that can control the line of scrimmage on both both lines. Both lines. Yep,

I agree with you. I am If I were ever to run a football team, I would build it inside out. Obviously, you've got to have the guy who can pull the trigger and you And that's what I'm saying. You have to have the guy who can pull the trigger in this league. There's no doubt about that. After that, though, I am finding big people, big people on the offensive line and big people on the defensive line. That's how

you win. Nothing against the receivers. Nothing gives defensive backs, not all the other positions, they're important, but you win ball games with a quarterback in two lines. If you have that, If you have that, you're gonna win a lot of football games, isn't that? Until yesterday we sat here and we said how good the Saints were, Right, Drew Brees and good offensive line and good defensive line day. What happened yesterday? Oh, they were off on the offensive

line yesterday and they were bad on defensive line. That's why you lose. Yeah, the Jaguars have kind of dedicated themselves to that over the last few years. Defensive line, obviously offensive line, going to get Norwell and then drafting Camera Robinson a few years ago right tackle. This year, the number nine rushing the offensive line continues to prove. I thought they've passed blocked outstanding this year. You'll really watch it. They've they've passed, walked very well. They're running

the ball better. The weakness where they've lost games this year, or the games they lost, I think of two that's or three that stand out to me is the two Houston games and the Carolina Panther game. We couldn't stop the run. And when you can't stop the run, it is it's a bear to win football games when there they are also eight no tied for six in the league and yards per rush at yards per a tempt rushing and so my argument, I said this earlier in

the year, is they don't call the run enough. They only had six rushers in the first half against the Texans. Now in fairness to so it goes back and forth. This you have to call the run and you gotta stick to it. But if you look at this team is three of their losses the main reason they could they lost the games they couldn't stop the run. And when this team has any type of lead and is stopping the run, that front four gets after the quarterback

as well as anybody. But when they getting these balance attacks and teams can keep on their heels and third and short and everything else, boy, it's tough. And then and so it goes back to the philosophy quarterback O and D line. I can find and I'm not discounting any other position, but I can find guys the other places.

Let's come back. We'll get into the defensive side down the stretch here and how they match up against some of these offenses coming up and the pass rush getting those guys going down the stretch here to coming up. meaning that you know, whether especially in the pass rush phase. Um, you know, he he's had a bunch of quality rushes, you know, but he also has um, you know, a bunch of double teams that he's fighting through or chips or or or that. I think that he's improved greatly in the in the run game. I think he's done a really good job there. And I think, you know, he's improved as as a pass rusher, and he's been

excellent job. Coach Duck Marone discussing Unique and Gockway and and really his last three games stretch, which has been fantastic for the Jaguars. Welcome back, Jaguars Happy r J P. Shadwick, Tony Boselli, Pete Prisco. The last three games for in Gockway nine tackles, two sacks, five tackles for lost, five quarterback hits, the interception, and a past defense. It's pretty good three game stretch. Even the sack numbers are not huge this year. The last three weeks, I think he's

played very well well. Duck's right there doing a lot to affect him. Um. He has won in the last four weeks. I'd say three or four weeks immediately, and the ball has been gone because the quick passing game. He's whipping tackles at the last scrimmage. Uh, he has improved as a run defender. I still think he can get better there. And uh, he's a good listen. He's a very good player. I mean, he's a guy that teams you can tell when you turn the tape on

our accounting forum, especially in the past game. And but he's also a guy that he needs the defense to win on first and second down. He needs more opportunities in third and longs. His team has not had a lot at least it felt like maybe I'm just going off of the London game and did not feel like they had very many opportunities to after Deshaun Watson. Now he had two opportunities he should have got any other quarterback. He had two sacks against Houston, but Deshaun Watson alluded

him and got away. So I think he's playing very well. He started slow because of the hamstring. Nothing you can do about that as a player. UM, I appreciate the fact that he played through it and was out there giving a great effort. And Uh, He's definitely a guy you want on this team. He wanted him. His attitude, his professionalism, his how he prepares, his toughness. Uh on your defense. Yeah, but Tony, one of the things you heard about him and the negotiations was they were paying

him for his run defense. Has he improved that much in that area? It's better. I still think it can be better. And I think watching him playing like like they need to make sure he's in space because look, he's not a big guy. Um. And I think he needs to use his athletic ability. We saw it against Houston where he just makes the tackle with in the run game. And maybe it's because this is what he's

being told to do. I don't know, but he he needs to be elusive even in the run game at the point of attack and make tackles, guessing of whether he's gonna, you know, to impress him and and be physical or if he's gonna give a little oaky dog mismove. Um. And he started to do that a little bit and just playing tackle. I know for a fact, if a guy is elusive out there, it makes me slow down a little bit. I can't be as aggressive and then

allows a smaller guy to use his power against me. So, um, yeah, he continues to improve, he continues to uh be one of the best players on this team, and uh he's uh. I think he's only gonna get better. But he needs more rushes, he needs more third logs, and they're not winning enough on first and second down to get him there.

Josh Allen on the other side something time to time they're on the field together and Calais Campbell and all those guys again, another guy who would like to have more third and long situation, all those guys, right, Pete, Yeah, here's the thing. And I was having this conversation with so you have to earn that, right, that's on you as a player to get the third long. I mean they're out there. They gotta earn. They have to earn by working their tails off in first and second down

to get the third long. I mean, nobody likes, you know, grinding it out on first and second down, but that's where you get You get the opportunities getting those third and long situations and puts the offensive line on their heels a little bit and get after the quarterback and make big plays and create turnovers and everything else. They understand that, and I think that's where you know you'll get off the field more too. I mean, I don't know, I don't have the numbers right in front of us,

but this defense is not great at third down. Third down defense, I think the conversions are pretty high against them when you look at those numbers, or do you think they are in the sack numbers though Tony their fourth, That's that's pretty darn good, considering I haven't been in certain law. No, I think they listen, I think they're good.

I'm just saying, if you the number that concerns me about this defense and where I think it shows up that you're not winning on first and second down as much as not the sack numbers as much, but the third down conversions against you. There are eight teens in the league and third down defense, what's the percentage? Almost four? They're almost getting conversion rates enough. And now I might be also leaning just towards the because the last game we saw was the Texans game where it felt like

everything was third and three. And I'm not wrong. I mean you called the game for sky Sports wherever that was um um the it just felt like they were always in third and you know, short to medium, and that's because the run game. You how to stop the run, and they just have. But they're not that yeah, they're not that far off. Like okay, like the Vikings, you consider them a decent defense right there at thirty two or thirty. Yeah, so they're not that far off. The

Ravens are pretty good defense at times. Packers, Uh, they're in the middle of the Bears. The Bears are thirty six tony. Okay, what is the what's what's the how many yards per rushing and temper are we giving up? I know we're down there. We're down the line and rush defense. I'll tell you in the second. But yeah, you're right. You gotta stop the run to turn the pass rushers loose. I get it. That's all I'm saying there. In rushing yards per game twenty nine and rushing yards

per play. Yeah, so rushing yards per play twenty nine, and that's like bad, that's a bad. That's a bad that number four nine four. And so when you I look at when I look at statistics, like some of the key things you look at his third down defense, red zone defense, and rushing yards per attempt. I mean those are key and then forget the sact members. How many you know, it's pressure, quarterback, hicks, quarterback, quarterback, knockdowns, sacks,

all that put together that will all lead turnovers. Typically, that's like the that's the formula. But if you're rushing yards per attempt is high, it means you're not in favorable down distance, which leads to not great third down. They're never behind the sticks, and so that's it's pretty

amazing when you think about it. Look about this for a second, Tony, you know, because I'm a big believer in yarchs protect in all categories, but yards per rush on defense very important, Like you said, Caroline has got a good defense right there last in the league. And you watch them though lately they can't get off the field on defense. Look at their third down percentage. It's not very good. No, it's not. What about what about New England? New England's until it's seven per rush? Right,

and we talked about two weeks ago. If I was playing in New England, I've done them, watch them, done games on them. They put a bunch of linebackers out there. I'd run it right at them. What about at four point seven per rush? That one doesn't make sense to me. They're playing there because they're playing really good defense. Yeah, but four point seven per rush. And and then you go down to the bottom, there's teams that don't you know, haven't been run on that much because they get thrown

on too. Right, there's always there's always that the flip side of that. You gotta look at the entire package, like if if teams can throw on you all day long, Like, look at the best yards for rush defense in the league. J yards per rush defense in the league, the best, Yeah, how about that? How about that the New York Jets three point zero one yards per rush? Okay, but go look at that defense. There are a good defense against

the run. They're really good defense. How many people they're not giving them a bunch of I mean, if you looked at if you looked at that defense, it took away when they their offense gives up points because of turnovers and direct points by the opposing defense, and when they're backed up in terrible fuel position. If you look at like normal situations, that's one of the better defenses.

They do a good job. They look at the other look at the other defense, and yards for rush the Rams three point three, the Bucks three point five, the Bears, we expect that at the Eagles three point eight and the Falcons Tony three point eight. The Falcons, everybody throw it all over them, right, they don't have to run, throw it all over the yard. Yeah, all right, listen, it's always dangerous to look at anyone's stat and say that's the reason. But how we got to this conversation.

Look at this defense, and how do you get a guy like Yunique and these guys set loose wars to getting more favorable down and distances and when you're not winning in the run game and that and you go back to the games these teams lost. I'm not putting it all in the defense by any means. There's obviously been offensive issue is but three of the games is they couldn't stop the run. To Texans games and against the Panthers. Remember, and Marcel Darius has done for the

for the year, he's on injured reserve. He's the reason you got him a couple of years ago to stop the run. And it worked that year down the stretch of and he's not gonna be available, so he's not walking through that door. You gotta find other ways to do it. And the bye week, I'm sure Todd Washton staff spent a little bit of time looking at the film figure out what to do. Get guys healthy, and uh, we'll see what they do, alright, plenty of the discuss

we'll come back in a moment. And the one other thing, the thing, the one thing, the other thing. And sometimes you look at like the Rams and other teams, why do they have such low rushing per tempt or rushing yards. If you can get a lead offensively, it's harder for teams to run the ball. They have to play catch up. What do they do when they play catch up? They throw up more? Yeah, but this is yards per temp though, Tony,

we're talking no, I get that. I'm just talking about overall your rushing yards and so you have to look at that as well, which means is one of the reasons I think this defense will be better. And again I always said preface, this is not nothing that Gardner minshew. But you you gotta believe you've got Nick Foles for a reason that if this team could start faster offensively get leads, it will help the defense as well. Finishing the red zone maybe a little more. Yeah, we've been back.

this week. They're gonna win this week. Okay. Jaguars lost Colts when I can't remember what I said, so that's lost at The Raiders lost Texans when Saints lost. And also talking about field position, which we're thirty within the NFL, which is something that we have to address and and and improve upon. And obviously schematically, you know, offense, defense and special teams have things to work on. Um. It's always good that when you get a chance to, you know, kind of take a step back and look at some of the things that you're doing and and um, look at the tendencies that you have and what people

are looking at. So I think we've learned a lot about ourselves, you know, talking about coaching wise, and you know this past week, I said coach Doug Marone today discussing what he just with the football team coming back to work today. I think those are the three holidays, UH. And we should remember more, but just remembrance and being thankful for the people who fought for our country, gave their lives for our country, the ultimate sacrifice, UM, and served to allow us to have a radio show like this and yuck it up and have a good time, play football and do whatever we love to do in this great country. Because it's not for free, UM. And a lot of people, a lot of families have given their lives and their

loved ones for us to do it. So hats off to everyone who has served, and thank you for your service. It's well said, Tony. Is this your idea of a good time though? Well, I mean it's a good just making sure. So the two things that Doug said, there's two statistics that have to change for this team to do what I've said they're going to do, and they are red zone offense has to be better, which I think we're in the bottom ten of the NFL. I'm right in front of me. It was we were I

think thirtieth at one point. I don't think we're much better. And uh, turnover margin we need to go from minus two we need at the end of the seven game run, we need to be at plus are better? Are you plus seven? M they are? If those two things, If those two things change seven and all field position, all

that stuff, that's the flow of the game. Yeah, I agree that you don't want to be thirty if you like better field positions starting, but I would take I would trade it all uh to get to minus seven on the year or plus seven on the year. Excuse me, so seven plus uh that means getting plus nine over the next seven games. And improving where we in the red zone offense were total zone. Yeah, it's uh, I got it right here, hang on, and we were thirty

three touchdown conversion. That's no. Thirty we need to be. We need to get up to We need to be sevent or greater down these seven last seven games of converting touchdowns to uh in the red zone inside the twenty and we need to be plus nine, making us plus seven for the year. We do those two things seven and old. Count it done well, you're you already locked it, so you already locked it. This is what happens. This is a little more it's going to happen. That's right.

The field position thing, though, I mean, if you're going three and out, it doesn't matter where on the field you start. I get that. But it's not just returning a kickoff, right, I mean, this is the punning game, and it's playing defense and flipping the field and doing a lot of things, right. I mean, it's twenty ninth officially. But here's the thing that's funny. It's five yard difference

from being nine and fourth. This is why the Jags start on their average basically twenty six yard line and the Saints start, who are fourth at the thirty one five yards? Well, I mean, but the Jets are dead last and they're only point five behind the Jaguars. So that's my point of saying that is this is not a statistic that I put as much weight in because the margin of but three of the top four teams in the league are in that category at the top.

I agree. I'm not saying it's not important. I'm just saying turnover margin, red zone offense will make a big impact. That's all. I'm not saying it's not important by any means. We used to every Friday, Tom used to give these keys to victory and they started off like at four.

By the end it was like eighty five keys to victories. Um, that we needed to do to win, a little bit of hyperbole there, not much though, but one of the statistics he showed us every week is your percentage of scoring based on where you start on the field, so like minus ten your ex percent all the way up, and then saying like you know how important field position was the message of that statistics, And I think that's what Doug was talking about there, is that they need

to have better, better field position for the offense. A lot of people think that one of the key stats that you look at is your yards per attempt passing minus your yards per attempt allowed passing. So in other words, like, for example, what the Jaguars yards protempt is actually pretty good right on offense? Okay, I have a get it. What's seven? They're like seven seven point one? That you subtract the seven point three that they allow, and that

that that's what you get your numbered. If you look at the good teams, usually their numbers are pretty significant in terms of the separation between the two. Yeah, you're really digging out. I mean, I mean you'd like, for example, the Bengals allow eight yards in attempt on defense eight that he would be one of those war guys. What's this war? What's this game? What's this game? Above replacement? No, I don't do all that, not that just his batting average is I need to know? No, I know I would.

What's B five three come from baseball? I've never been heard of those before. Half the time I worked in it for ten years, I don't know what half of them are. I'll be honest with you. Maybe they make up. He used to be. He used to be batting average, home runs in r BIS right and strike outs, slugging presentedge. Yeah, now what do they have? What do they have? Now? JP your basics? It's war, it's what is Yeah, there's all kind of it's how do you calculate that? I

have no idea? You know, it's funny too tony when you try and like say, uh, you know, I don't think about the you know, the analytics get a little carried away. They get so defensive about it. Analytics's so angry at you. I'm actually a big I mean, if you think of what analytics are, We've been doing it for years with statistics. They're just taking another step further. And I think analytics have huge value and uh and uh worth to how you pick players and how you

manage a team and everything. I think you should be a piece of the pie, part of the information that is added to the overall pie of your that you're trying to decide of what to do and when to do it, how to do it. I just sometimes you get so far into the weeds. I get lost, and then when you get throw part in the WEGI lose sight of the fact player candy play does have heart, getting does he have the effort can play. I'll give

you a perfect example. Yesterday in the Carolina game, Carolina was playing, Uh, I didn't get that one at all. Who was Carolina playing? Yesterdays? They're down by two touchdowns, they score with what like seven eight minutes after the game, beat correct, and instead of making it kicking in the

extra point, making seventeen, they went for two. And I saw because this analytics say that by going for two and if you get better chance to chance of winning, but if you only kick the field goal, you only have a forty seven percent chance of winning the extra point you mean, yeah, the extra point. And so he went for two because the analytics say that, you know, if you make it, you have a greater chance, and if you don't make it, you still can go for

two if you score another time to tie it. Right to me that with that much time left and the way the overtime rules are, I would kick a field goal every single time, extra point ex extra point. I'm sorry, I kick every time. And here's all I have to say to the analytics guys. And and you have a

bunch of them in your building. And Tony Khan, God bless him, is a big analytics guy, and I believe in a lot of the analytics, but like I told him once, when you tell me fourth of an inch is the same as fourth and then come talk to me, because on the stat sheet that they all use for data breakdown, it's the exact same, right if you're the one fourth and fourth in fourth in one and a half yards and it's not the same, No it's not. But by their data, it's all the same. So they

can't break it down in the fourth and inches. If you can't break it down into inches, then your data is not real in my mind. And I made that point that Tony Connie said, you make a good point because fourth in an inch is not the same as fourth in the yard and the half. It's not. Well, I mean my example of the Panthers Packers game and the analytics and all that, and maybe it's right, and we had this conversation week two when we went for it for the win against the Texans, and maybe the

analytics say that's the right play. I would argue though, in that situation you have to take more than just what the math is telling you. That's piece, that's a piece of it. But I also want to go into the flow of the game and what is happening, because it maths. And if it's forty four and you haven't stopped him the entire game, you go for two and then you go for two. But if it's a low scoring game like it was against the Texans, you just tied it up your defensive limited m you you kicked

the extra point and go to overtime. So I really did so, And I'm sure that I've had these cards. Like I think analyps are so important because, like I want as much information as I can get to make a decision. I'm just not basing it on just that though. How your what do you think about the d v o A ratings? I don't know. I can't that's like war to me. I don't even know what that means and how they get it if I can't figure out how they get it, like what does that mean? Defense?

Like it's I don't even know what it is, but they all I do is I do this Picks podcast and the guy every time he's in, I go, gare you go again with your d v o A. What is it? Does he know? He knows he's a you know, he's a stat guy. And what does it tell us? I don't I don't know what it tells you. So Pete, before we have when we go into the break, I want you to look up what d v o A means and come back and tell us what d v o A means, because I've read that as well, and

I don't know what it means. It's uh here, I'll tell you right now. It's the Jets and Dolphins are going in opposite directions on the d v o A the week eight d v o A ratings. What is it? I don't know what idea? Can you ask what the d v o A is ered? What does d v o A? Defense Adjusted Value over our Average calculates a team success based on the down a distance of each play during the season, then calculates how much more or less successful each team is compared to the league average.

I'm trying to think, like, how would I explain that to somebody? And I don't know. I don't know. Well, I mean it's down in distance against the rest of

the league a team's success base. So it's like you're good on third and five and gains of the league is banned on third and five. You calculate the difference. I guess you found bonus points there. I have no I have no idea, What the hell are you talking about? And I wonder who came up with that, Like some really smart football out the football outsiders guys came up with it. And and here's the thing. I think it's

all good stuff. And if you look at it, obviously tracks of the teams that are having success this year. I just I think the the power at any analytics like that is being able to explain it of what the value of it is to a coach or someone

who's making the decisions. I mean, I think that sometimes we get too caught up in all the analytics and instead of just watching all right, do you need analytics to tell you at the Miami Dolphins and New York Jets and since Anati Bengals in the Washington Redskins are bad football teams? That's what I mean. Your eyes tell you that. And and so the d v O d v O A, the highest d v O A is the I think the highest difference d v O defensive

d v O A is the Patriots. Okay, whatever, there's a quarterback de v O A two, right, there's d v O A like the forty and ours are high in the d v O A right distance value against oppositions are opposing oppositions? Never it is. It's defense adjusted value over average, but it's the finest team of eficiency ratings measured by proprietary defense adjusted value over average system that breaks down every single NFL play and compares the team's performance to a league baseline based on situation in

order to determine the value over our average. Okay, great. The too long, didn't read version is that it measures efficiency, and efficient teams should win a lot of games. That's okay, great, efficient, If they're efficient, you're probably gonna win games. Okay, you're fine with that. Good. Well, like early on in the season, the Bucks were seventh of d v l A and the record was two and two, so it's not the

v o A and there were three and one. My whole point I was trying to get to, I don't want to make this conversation because I'm I laugh at it with you, Tony, because the same way, it's not a predictive tool. It just tells you what time it is after the fact. Now you're you're predicting that if the jet wars on the red zone, they're gonna go seven and oh, that's your predictive tool. I'm saying those

I'm saying those stats predicting. You say that before seven seven, and so you think they're gonna My whole point is so based on all this, the forty Niners are like the top of the Stevo Eis pile um. Does anyone think on this show that the Forts are gonna have success in the playoffs and end up in Miami and the Super Bowl? They could? I'm starting to believe more and more if you ask me right now, if the Packers played the forty Niners in the playofs who would

all right, I'm gonna give you five teams. Forty Niners, right, the Saints, Okay, Packers, all right, Vikings and I'm gonna give the Eagles is the last team. Okay, One, I would play who I picked to go to the super Bowl in the first place to Packers. Two. I'd probably put the Saints even after what happened yesterday. Three three of the forty Niners, four the Vikings, and five the Eagles. Okay, how would you wreck them? Um, I don't even know why I put the Eagles there, just trying to pick

a team. Okay, somebody's gotta win that division Seattle. Seattle is probably better, more fair team because they're playing better right now. So I'd have the Eagles last. I would have I would have the Saints as one because I think they're better on defense and I think you can run against the Packers and I think that matters in the playoffs. I put the Packers second. I probably put the Vikings are tough for me because I like the Vikings.

I mean, I probably go forty Vikings and Eagles. So similar to you, I probably just flipped the top two. My point of saying that is it's I mean, buy and far. According to the d v o A is the forty Niners are the highest ranked d v o A team, So you're now referencing d v o A. What the hell it is? Yeah, I'm not sure. The point is it's like saying d v o A. It sounds smarter that way. Let's go to social media questions,

shall we. Let's start off today with at son of Douval nine oh four, Jack's have to go six and one down the stretch of the absolute worst to make the playoffs. We play every team in the wild card running except the Steelers. What are the odds we actually make the playoffs? So I didn't do the math on this, and I have no idea what the actual odds are, but I give you the odds. They're going seven six and one, six and one, Seal already locks. Why is

team with that said. I mean, you're not wrong, and you're in your question, it's accurate, but I think it's dangerous to look at it that way. Well, the Texans went up there and threw the ball on him and beat him. The Colts ran it on him and physically bald him. And then you saw what Derrick Henry did yesterday, ran right through him all day long, all day yard yesterday. They haven issues stopping the run. And again he goes back to what you said, Tony, you gotta be having

to run the ball, stop the run. You gotta be physical. They're not physical. I'm curious to see this week they play the Chargers in Mexico City. Can they stop the Chargers seemed to have found a little bit in the run game with Gordon and Neckler. Can they stop that run game? Well, it's because they're actually calling it. I think Nag is still gonna start. Yeah, so he's he's the starter and Jacobs will be back playing the strong side linebacker. That's that's what it feels like. So so the rookie lost his job then for now? Yeah, I remember because

they were having issues earlier in the year. That's why they made the change, like they were having some assignment issues, just like the guy he replaced. Oh wow.
