's Jaguars Dawn. Any extra voice by John Tarney. I am god. It is a Monday, August nine. This is Jaguars Happy Hour. Jaguars Happy Hours presented by Jet Home Loans and now a guy who expects to take all the snaps in today's program, j Pea. Welcome in Jaguars Happy Hour presented by Jet Home Loans, J P Shadrick, Tony Boselli, and Jacksonville. CBS Sports senior writer Pete Prisco. Down in South Florida, It's dress rehearsal week. Gentlemen. How are you doing, Tony? What's up doing good? You know?
It's uh, I'm looking I'm actually I can't hope I'm saying this. I'm looking forward to a preseason game because I want to see what this first offense looks like. I'm a little bit concerned. I don't think either tackle is going to be out there and after the performance, so I don't think Cam Robinson's playing. Do you will delve into that a little bit? I mean unless you know something I had, I will say in the media time.
He's been out doing stuff. So it's only fifteen in a window, I know, but he has he done Team yet don't know. Okay, that's closed to the I'll be shocked the way this team has progressed injuries and treating injuries this camp, which is super conservative. I would be surprised about that, and I don't. And it is Juan Taylor back braxing. He's been doing some stuff but when it's open, but we don't know if he's being a team either. So now if those two are out there,
it's gonna be really exciting because that's your team. We don't know right right guard, who's gonna be there. We'll get it all this later, I mean high level is I'm excited to see Nick Foles. I'm excited everybody, uh a little bit. You're gonna get a taste of what d Filippo wants to do with them. You're not gonna see the whole thing. Get all the receivers out there. I imagine Leonard for Nett a couple snaps. So I'm just looking forward to that. I don't like preseason. I
think they should do away with at least two. I'd be fine toy get rid of all the preseason um, but I'm excited for this one, for whatever that's worth. Pete Prisco with us tonight, Pete, what's up? Are you as excited as Tony about this week? No? I'm not. I mean, but Sully is um is cheery guy again? Like that? How might cheery Sein and Rainbow my point
of I disagree with you. I think as a Jack the Jaguar portion of your fandom or your media that used to you know, being the old beat writer, I think there's a piece of you that is excited to see what at least a glimpse of what this team will really look like opening day, because you're gonna see the first team unit at least want with you want. That's all I'm saying. I don't. I'm not excited about a preseason gay per se. I just want to see
what they look like. So let's see Falsa. I mean, you were waving your palm bombs like you usually do on on a Monday. What palms again? Can you tell me what? Poma? Please just let me know. Well, we take out one game at a time, whether it's the preseason or the regular. Says like maybe I should say one and half at a time. How long do you think to play this week? To Selly? I think four to five series so quarter and a half depending on the length of the I think it's more of a
play count, Pete, say thirty plays twenty five plays. Do you remember when they used to say the first team had to experience half time to get so dumb. We used to say more things that make no sense anymore. I mean, yeah, the third time adjustments come back out to come back out, Like what do you mean? I've been doing this my entire life, And I always used to say, like in college, we never had preseason games,
and I felt fine that first game. I knew exactly how to handle halftime too, and I knew how to come out and play. Guess what happens after half time? You'll walk out of the locker room and go to the field. You play the second drink water door practices back. We're used to have two days in full pads. I mean used to bowl in the ring. I mean used to like it was a salt tablets. The game has evolved, obviously in the in the right way, except for unless
you're Antonio Brown, you still want old helmets. The rest of us have evolved into better technology and better equipment. But I was staying on the field before the game last week Thursday, and Johnny Rembert and or some mobili were there because they're the police for this, for the uniforms, and they were talking about how the three of days they used to have back in the day, pads, special hit beat each other up, special teams work, and then
practice again in the afternoon. And they were saying, how easy every it is right now. So we used to full you know then you'd have walkthroughs. I mean you did. I mean meetings we'd started, you know, eight am or wake up with Trayton, let's say sixth dirty and you would go to ten o'clock at night. I mean it was a long day. It's a long day. Here's what we're getting to in the program tonight. Dress rehearsal week
underway for the Jaguars in preseason week. Could this be the debut week of Nick Foles for the jack sounds like it could. Offensive lines settling a bit, that's good news, will break all that down with Tony coming up. Defensive charters. Haven't seen many of those guys, but we should. This week. We're gonna delve into some blinds, a blind side blocks controversy. Tony is angry. Yeah, I think everyone should be. If they call it that way, we'll go around the National
Football League as well. Let's start with dress rehearsal week. Certainly I didn't see in there no crosstalk, the fast talking segment. Not tonight. That's too bad. I like the fast talking segment. We'll get to that next cross fire cross fires what it's called, Mike that in. We're not gonna force that in there every week. I thought it was. It's not sponsored, so it could be at some point, will be coming everyday thing as soon as we get
a sponsored dress rehearsal week. Certainly for the offense, the first team offense, you really haven't seen. I haven't seen at all in this preseason. You haven't seen the defensive first chance to for the new offense to go through a game week routine for Nick Bowles, ita similar to in season week is we're gonna get during the preseason. So um, just fine tuning all the schedule and the details and what we're gonna go over and the installs, especially with a new offense and new players is huge.
Has been great so far from me, just to get a feel of what we're you know, expectations are throughout the day, when I gotta you know, when am I gonna have time to do my extra film work, like figuring out the schedule so we don't have to worry about that week one. So there's Nick Foles, the quarterback. Yesterday, in fact, he spoke with the media here at t I a bank field. The routine, getting all the things down, meeting times and all. That's fine. I think it's important.
I do. I do think it's important. I mean, I'll make fun of the rest of the stuff, and you know, coming out at halftime and all that nonsense that coaches used to sell all of us, including the fans and the media. Um, why this is so important and you have to have it the the practice, game week, the dress rehearsal. As far as getting your routine as a player,
especially with new coaches, I think it's really important. I think Nick Foles later out perfectly because you want to understand what you have to do and when you are going to do it, and when you have that free time, and when you can fit in your workout or your rehab or your extra film work. You know, how much do I need to take home after work? How early do I need to get there? Just a sense of how the coaches communicate, the game plan, how we install things.
All this is new because you have all new You have really a new staff on the offensive side as as long, because the coordinators new. So he's gonna put his system in there and how he does it, new quarterback, a lot of new pieces. I think it's a critical week for this team, at least offensively. I haven't seen haven't seen any of that yet, but it's a inside the building. You're going through meetings for the first time. Really, you're installing a few things offensively, Pete, but you're not
doing a whole true game plan. But you're doing more than you did in the week's previous here, Pete. You know, I'm curious to hear what Tony when Tony played, Did you guys actually put in a game plan in the third preseason game, because I heard the teams don't do that as much anymore. A mini one like you go through installed. This is what we're gonna run. Here's the front you'd watch tape for the first time on the opponent. You know, this is the different fronts that you've seen.
This is how they this is their third down front. This is the packages. Here the blitz as we expect, just very high level, not beat into the minutia or the detail that you would get calm uh the regular season where it's so much information and it's so much detail. But I think it's a light game plan. I called game plan light is what we used to do. Yeah, and I'm okay with that. That's a I mean for me, like you said, Tony, it gives him a chance to
feel like it's a game week. And for a lot of guys, they haven't felt like a game week in a long time. I mean, and a lot of those guys haven't felt it would nobody, how about all those guys, none of those of sense. Offensive coordinator John D. Philippo wants to see the offense move the ball, get some third downs, about some point, some red zone success which equals points as well for the O C offensively. Now, is this game gonna decide whether or not we have
success as an offense this season? No, you don't put that much onus on anything in my opinion, but um, I think this will gauge where we are in terms of what where we need to smooth some things out from a communication standpoint, We've already done that from a preparation standpoint in terms of just the way we installed. We've had to smooth some things out. So it's great.
I love that Coach Maron's having us go through a test run in terms of a game planned it because I'm new and Nick's new, and yeah, a lot of new on this offensive side here. And you know, for John d Philippo, how big is this game Thursday night? Oh? I mean I agree with I agree with Coach d Philippo. It's like not gonna make or break anything that happens this season. I mean, you know what what's big for him is how much does he want to hear from the fans of the media if they have a bad performance.
That's right, that's pretty much the consequence of having a tough week. Now you're not playing against a very good Miami team either, and so you would hope perfect world for them. Go get to drive, have three drives, you get first downs in all three drives, two of them lead into the red zone where you score points, some points and their extended drives and you get everyone out of there. It doesn't have to be perfect. You're like, yes,
I feel great. Worst case scenarios you have like four or three and outs one jar you have to turn over. You know, you get one good drive, you know, near the end of the half, and you know, and starters are in and out and then you're like, Okay, that's not great. But either of those scenarios happened, and Pete, I think you'd agree, it's not gonna affect Week one and it's not gonna have anything to do with the
outcome of that game. When Kansas City comes to h T I A field, it's not gonna change if they don't cross midfield. You're here right at least get across mid But you know what, it's not gonna matter in the big picture. It no, but you'd still like to see something, some life, a little bit of life from the offense. I mean, come on, Tony, if they would like you said, four three at ounce and they didn't
cross midfield, you'd go you'd be killing them. Don't say you wouldn't be No, I didn't say I wouldn't be killing them. No, No, That's why I said. That's the only thing the Filippo has to be worried about it. I mean, what the offense and everyone, I mean, they have their own internal goals. And what they want to accomplish, and they learn stuff whether it's good or bad, like he said, and they can make corrections. It's all great.
The only downside is if it goes bad, is hearing from people like you, Pete and me and the rest of the media and the fans ripped them. My whole point though, and I gotta believe you agree with this. It doesn't make any difference for week one. If you have a great thing or a poor thing, you're gonna have time to work it out and adjustments are gonna be made and you can fix anything or anything can go wrong as well if it goes really well before
week one. All this is is preparation for that first week. I agree with the preseason. You can't gauge anything preseason and what it looks. But but you'd like to see rhythm. And you know, we talked Doug Morone talked about how he's got a lot of reps for his players in practice against each other. But Tony, you know, it's not the same. I've said it all along, Pete, We've had these arguments, you know, log him and takes the other side. I'm not sure where JP sits in this whole thing.
My thing is, you know, practice is not the same as the game, even the preseason. I don't care. I mean, even if it's the same guys over it over, it doesn't the entire summer. It doesn't mean. Well, here's other thing. I'll just speak for an offensive lineman, maybe the receivers in the quarterbacks, they can get their timing and all that junk in practice. I'm never I've never once, I'm never once blocking a guy in practice that is trying to finish the play and get to the quarterback and
hurt the quarterback. But as soon as you get to the preseason, those guys are trying to finish the play and get to the quarterback and hit him. So that changes a dynamic of finishing place. At no point during practice in my run blocking and as I'm going up and working to the next level and trying to finish guys, is that guy trying to make a tackle get through me and nail the running back. I mean, it's there's something at the end that you can't replicate in practice
unless you go full speed. And nobody goes full speed anymore. No, obviously we've talked about this, as you said, but Dougs trying to get his team as healthy as he can to the starting line of the season. Okay, and I go back, and this is my contention. Two years ago, they had the hardest camp in a long time. They had zero injuries all year. One game. Tell them Smith missed two games for the concussion. That was it. Everyone else played nothing else. Last year they had the same
style camp. They really only had one major injury during camp, and that was Marquis Lee in a game. Pason, not practice in a game, had nothing to do with camping hard or not. He took a helmet to the knee. You could add walk throughs all of camp and he still blown his kneeut in that play. And they end up having a bunch of injuries throughout the year. Though, Yes, okay, so are you telling me it's because they had a hard camp because the year before it didn't affect them
at all. Now you have this easy camp or easier and they probably have more injuries this camp. This is the first time the offensive lines went on the field and they have had in any other camp. And so I don't buy because I've seen even back Pete when I was playing, you had the majority of teams had really physical camps, but you always had those, you know, player coaches, the easier camps, the West Coast style whatever. Like you measure injuries at the end of the year.
I mean it kind of. It's just I think they're random at some point. I think, you know, I think, And if they're not random, I would actually attribute what you do from February until July as more important than what happens in July. Yeah, but Tony, Tony, remember the old Jimmy Johnson teams and were like your Cofflin teams. They used to beat the daylights out of each other, remember, and then there was you, Like you mentioned the other theory where you don't do that, and both both both
worked at times in the NFL. I agree. But you know what it comes down to, Pete's whose who stays healthy? And I'm saying I'm not sure one leads to being more healthy during the season than the other. But but playing in does playing in a game? Is it like the Chargers lost Derwin James in a practice last week. I mean, you can't get hurt anywhere, right, Pete, You're singing the same song I'm singing. I mean, that's exactly right.
I've been saying that. And so by the way, I did see I did see Coughlin last week when I was there, and I said, oh, man, I remember the days when this team wasn't soft and guys actually played the preseason. He shoot me away, let's come back. He didn't like that. No I did. It's like the old days, Prisco and Coughlin going back and forth. We'll back in a moment, We'll get onto the defensive side. Oh, let's do it. Those starters haven't played either in the preseason.
A little bit later, running back, tight end are their concerns right now with the depth of those positions. And a little later in this first hour as well, Jimmy Look Had Equipment manager will join us to unveil the uniform combination for Thursday night. Todd Wash, defensive coordinator Today at t i A bank Field after Jaguars practice Welcome Back Jaguars Happy Hour presented by Jet Home Loans, J P Shadrick and Jacksonville Pete Prisco down in South Florida to I don't know, Pete, I don't know where he went. He walked outside, he's on a phone call. He's got a cup of coffees walking back in. We've already started the segment again. That's okay. We can do a show without you. We've done it before, we can
do it again. It was the best. Remember how good the show flow? It was awesome, Pete, Yes, it was. I mean I told him, I told Tony that it must have been so good. I was. I was tracking Twitter and there was zero comments. Great show, guys, you were tracking to what it was, and I went back and looked great comments. I mean great show. I mean excitement around that show on Twitter outstanding. So you're blaming Logman, then listen, there's everyone knows that there's one person who
carries the show. It's me. I'm the star. You guys are my side kicks, and let's keep going. Oh my god, if that head gets any bigger, it's going to be an eight and three eighths instead of eight and one eighth. The helmet, by the way, uh, seven and seven eights later in your career is probably your head filled out. I have a seven and seven eighths. Like we know the fitted Uh can I say new Era? It's a it's an NFL sponsor. Yes, you just did you know?
The fitted New Era hats is a seven and seven eights. My helmet was a seven and seven eights. Yeah, but the fitted like you're wearing that hat you're wearing above you wear the weigh above the kind of corpor brow. Look, Look it's seven and seven eights. That's what I wear. That's a large hat. This is a flex that's one of those. That's the kind of hat in church they want to pass around to fill that thing. Obvious, there's
a lot of room. Hey, Pete, I mean, I don't want to say anything, but for someone who's five five, you're not very well proportioned yourself. I mean you've got a big head, A big I got a very little head. To be honest, Well, maybe it just looks big because how fat you are on your fat cheeks. No, Tony, it used to be a lot bigger when I had hair on the air back. I mean you are literally I saw you on the field. You're as wide as
you are tall. Wrong you are when you made your crack into my camera about how needs to go a little lower? Yeah? Yeah, he was on the air, So I came over. He was filming for CBS something whatever the nine hundred stations he's on at CBS, and uh, he was sitting there and I said, you need to lower the camera a little bit if you're gonna make sure you get him or give him a box, because right now it's tough. I've been I've been on a box.
I guarantee you've been on a box. Yeah. Defensively. Here, let's move on, okay, of the other side of the football here. How much of the starters do you need to see? How many guys you need to see? How long do you need to see them on Thursday night. I don't need to see class, I don't need to see Jalen, I don't need to see Unique, I don't need to see boy A. I don't need to see Marcel Darius. Those guys, no, thank you, stay on the sideline, don't even put your jerseys on. I don't need to
see him. Well, I'm not going to see them. I asked class Campbell locker room said how much time? I asked him, how much time do you need? He's like, I don't need any time, but I would want sometime. I don't need. I could have played Opening Day was zero preseason game. I've done it before my rookie year. I never I did have one preseason game, came off surgery and started no when I was following your different cat though. Well, but by the way, so is Jalen.
I mean those are different cats. They don't need it. Why would even risk it? Would you play? This is where I actually agree with the whole movement of like from the beginning, I would agree with Doug Marone, don't play those guys. I would have played Nick Foles in that group earlier because I think they need reps. Yeah, but those guys didn't have the private plane flying him back before. What does that have to do with anything? Because I don't that doesn't try stuck in their view?
Bring up? What did they serve on that plane and they remember. You know. The funny thing about that, I don't remember flying. So, just to get background for everyone listening, if you haven't heard the fifty Times brings this up. Whatever show is. I got hurt my rookie year in training camp, and several guys got hurt. Everyone else had to fly commercial back to Jacksonville. I flew on Wayne Weaver's jet. That's the big that's the big joke. But it's not a joke. It's it's a fact. It's not joke,
it's fact. But the funny thing is, I remember flying from Jacksonville back to Steven's Point. I have zero recollection and I'm God's honest truth. I know I flew on it. I have no recollection from flying from Steven's Point to Jacksonville for surgery, like zero. I don't know. It's like it did not exist in my brain, like I remember. I remember. Probably he was as concussed. Everything, whatever you want to say, dropped up. I mean, maybe it was
early in your career to be concussed. Well, yeah, I'm not. Let's not go down the concussion because I'll start saying things that I regret and I'll get in trouble with everybody, and so let's just put it out there. You're on Viking in and you don't remember going on I don't know. If I was on Viking and I don't remember anything about that trip back, You're a smart I'm just telling you, I don't remember being on the plane. I remember flying
back with other people. To Stephen's point, I don't remember. I don't remember. I don't know why how we got from this point on the show Boy, I play that you got special treatment and nobody else did. Perfect It still happens today. But I'm finally And here's the other thing. If I was a coach, if I was a GM, if I was an owner, I would be upfront like, yeah, I treat people differently, like I'm gonna treat Clayss different than I treat I wouldn't play Jalen. I wouldn't play
a J. I wouldn't play and go way Unique. Would you play Unique? No? Probably not, No, Miles Jack. I would play Myles Jack. Yes, I would play for that way, the running back, because he's gonna be a part of this passing game in a big way in my position, in my opinion, and you need some timing with the quarterback. I would I would agree with you. Normally you wouldn't play. Not just to see him run the ball, No, I don't care about that, but the passing game and what
they want to do, He's a part of it. I would play. We're touching on defense here Josh Allen's first two games as a pro. Last week. There's a clip right after the game on Twitter throwing the right tackle the Eagles, and then the rest of the game we're showing it on Jaguar stuck. Don't remember. I was like really excited after this plays and like, oh he's in a big game. I don't remember anything else happening. He got blocked, I guess the rest of the most of
the day after that. But how has his preseason been as a whole? And what else do you want to see from Josh Allen? I want to see him win and get home. I have not seen him hit the quarterback yet. I don't think now. I haven't watched all the tape, so maybe he did a few times. He's played the run well and he's a big he's a good player. But what you want to see is him get home in the past and granted he hasn't had
a bunch of opportunities. It's not like they've had a bunch of third longs and like you know, pen your years back and go get the quarterback situations. I'd like to see that and that's it. I want to see that. I want to see Hm hit the quarterback. That's what he's here for. What about you, like, not just Alan,
but defensively for this group. I mean, if they have some of these guys in there, which you don't think they should play them, but if they do happen to go out there, Um, what is a good night for this defensive line? Pete on Thursday night? If they're out there. If they're out there, just show pressure. I mean, you gotta be able to person the quarterback. In this league, Miami's offensive line isn't very good. I'll be honestly, there's a lot of on that line, So I think you'll
be able to pressure the quarterback. If it's Patrick can't move, I mean he's he tries to move, but he's not very mobile. I don't think so. For me, I think the success of the defense will be dictated by how they approached the quarterback. Pete, who's left on that offensive line beside Laramie Tuncil. It's across the well. Davis is playing right tackle. Now, remember he played some guard last year. So like I mean, Pounties are gone. Pouncy has gone.
He was gone last year. Yeah, Pouncey was gone. They gott I mean, they let go about James and they're not very good. And is um Fitzpatrick going to be the starter? He's beat at Rosen right now he has Yeah, so it's Rosen start the third priest. If you start the third preseason game, usually the starter right is Rosen. If if fits Magic beats out Rosen, is Rosen an
official bust. Well he'll play this. You know, Fitzpatrick's not making it through the season, so we'll know when he plays, right, I mean I would you would say right now, yes, but if but you know, yeah, I think we'll know when he plays. So I just want to set I'm gonna set a bookmark here. This is a bookmark. I'm bookmarking this moment. This is four thirty PM on August nineteen. Yeah, but it's just for this show. It's a bookmark within the show that we need to come back to. Don't
forget when we do around the league. Yes, I want to talk to make sure we talked about Kyler Murray. Kyler Murray, I've heard of him, yes, So I just want to make sure we get to that. What made me think of that as Josh Rosen was the quarterback? Kyler Murray's now bookmark that. Let's get back to what we're talking. By the way, they start a rookie left guard and Dieter you remember him from Wisconsin, Tony, big kid, physical, Yeah, okay, yeah, I think he's good in the run game. And and
let's come back. We'll get into the running back room. Here. We'll hear from John D. Flippo again discussing learnings. Got the thoughts on the running backs soon, I can't wait. And tight end concern. Yes, front line guys aren't out there. Yeah, that's a concern. Too many injuries on a group that wasn't that deep. Are you that good? Well? Are you? Are you too? So based on what coach decide, you know it'll be good for us. Welcome Back, Jaguars Happy Hour presented by Jet Home Loans, j P Shadrick, Tony Buselli, Pete Prisco is down in South Florida. Our conversation continues with this offense here, you know, tithe The ends are a little bit of a question, right, Um,
Jeff Swain's not out there right now now. Josh Oliver has been now he's been back on the field, but who knows to what extent rookie, but he was doing well. The mystery though, what he's doing actually so right now, you've got O'Shaughnessy, koyak um, Charles Jones is injured right now, that the rookie, undrafted guy who's doing well in camp. And then a bunch of guys who signed within the last week, week and a half. So it was the Wolf and Carson Meyer and guys like that was it was.
It was a group that I felt okay about. I thought it was better than last year's group, which is saying a lot um before all the injuries. Like Swain, nice move, tight end, knows how he used his body. Not a great blocker, but can get open. I think will be a nice middle of the field threat. Oliver stretched the field, seam guy, matchup issues another move guy. Okay, Charles Jones, good blocker, rookie you worry about a little bit O'Shaughnessy, kind of that all around guy. I figured
those or four guys you can live with it. You're okay. It's not great, it's not terrible. It's better than last year. Now with injuries. It's a train wreck. Train wreck, it's a train wreck. Yes, you're not subtle at all. Well, I mean it is. It's bad group. You have four guys, You have four guys that came up the street. They're playing there's they're hoping that their body. Sounds like Oliver is gonna be back for week one. That's the hope. Okay, here's a guy who's not played at all ever. Third
round guy, what's Swayne's injury? I'll find out, but it can't be major though. I don't think it's major, right, No, I mean no, yeah, he should be back. It's a train wreck for this week, don't pete. I keep on getting I get what you're saying. But how many times I start getting worried when there's a bunch of guys that you're saying, oh, yeah, but they'll be back for week one, like if it's one or two guys. But now we're like, oh yeah, Cam we'll be back, Yeah, yeah,
Quincy Williams will be back. Okay, yeah, Jeff Swain will be back. Oh, Oliver will be back. Juwan Taylor, Okay, he'll be back. Like all of a sudden, you start listing all these guys that are going to be back, and if they're back, they haven't been working. They've been working and they're young, right, So that worries me. I'm not saying Okay, it's great. It's good. It's better than
not being back. By the way, if you get three of them back, I mean three of them are capable of playing at the same level, then you'll be okay with that. But you're right, Oliver's never played in the NFL game. He doesn't know what it feels like. It's a lot to ask for a young guy like Swain. I'm not worried about him. If he's back, he's playing him, He'll be fine, no big Deal's fine. But like Charles Jones, who's our best blocker, at least in the preseason, I'm
not sure it's saying a lot. It's undrafted, rookie, free agent. I'm not sure makes the club now. He might be a practice squad guy because of the injuries Philip Haigoland two days ago, Jeff Swam and Charles Jones not stretching with a team. No boot for Swam, so lower leg is what sounds like injury. I think he'll be fine. But how cautious did they be with these guys instead of you know what I mean, like just with the regular season, would he be out there working or something.
It's a great question based on what we've heard from Doug this year and how he's approaching camp, or just the overall philosophy. I would say they're very cautious, wouldn't you. That's all. That's all we can go by. They don't tell us anything, and I wouldn't tell us anything either if I was dog. Well, like a tailor's tailor's injury is a knee right the bank he stepped on somebody stepped on his leg or something, and that would happen.
An he like he got rolled into a little bit weird and then like tripped them on himself and then fell and banged his knee into the ground. Well, that shouldn't be anything for long term. Well, I would have thought he'd be back already. It's been two weeks. He's been out there this week and you know, so is he playing that? I don't know. We only open I'm like to find out he's back in the practice. He
should be He should be playing this week. If all he did was banging that in the underground, he should be playing this Well, that's what the hope is. But we don't know, Pete. That's my that's my point. Because everyone everyone to him today by the offensive coordinator in the quarterback. Was that that sounded positive? Okay, great, say that that's great. I mean, Jimmy Luck is gonna be
on here with us pretty soon the manage. Maybe we can ask Jimy who practice if we see like threaten his job at risk his job to tell us what happened on the even though he's not allowed to. I know we were talking tight ends, but I wanted to ask Tony this because this is something you can address. How important is it for five guys to work together at some point during camp in the preseason before the opener? Um, Yeah, it's you'd rather have it than not. The more veterans
they are, the less important it is. Um, your rookie year was you didn't work with those guys. I mean it was fine. I mean but now you were, but you were different. But like, I think it's for comfort and communication. Yeah, I think it's important. The more you do it, the better it is because you can communicate clearer, you understand what to expect, especially for young guys, and especially because you have a whole new offense in there.
So I think it's important. Is it, like, are they going to stop the season, Like, oh my gosh, I'm panicking. I don't know that's dogs and cats like I mean in the streets. I mean, what do you do? No, it's not that bad, but it's it's not as good as what you like, dogs and cats in the streets. I was gonna say dogs and cats doing a certain item,
but I figured that stop myself a self control. I want, I want my job to continue running back room weird From John D. Filippo, today, offensive coordinator with the Jacksonville Jaguars. The question, of course is what do you want to see how the Leonard for that on Thursday night? But really, what do you expect from Leonard for that this entire season?
I'm still learning that with Leonard in terms of again, i'll know a little bit more after this week, in terms of how many plays he gets wind in and all those things in a game like atmosphere. Um, but I know Leonard's goals. Leonard's goals are to be uh is to be the best back in this league, okay, and unique star players play a lot of football, okay, So to me, um, he needs to play. The question going into that belief in Philip Haman was, you know,
do you worry about reps first and second down? When you're trying to figure out the third down reps and all. He's like that. That was the answer that hey, Leonard for net is the guy. Guys play a lot of snaps if they're starts. Well, listen, here's the deal. You want to be you want to be the bell cow back, you want to be the stud, you want to be the man. Then you're out there all the time. I mean, Zeke Elliott is out there all the time. He might get a breather of a series here or there, or
a couple of plays here there. But it's his team, you know, the best. But Todd Gurley, before he heard his knee, it was his team. He was team. Moving away from that, Tony No, not not with the not the starbacks beat they're not well well, I mean stack starback. You met Elliott. I agree with you on Elliott, Barkley, not Gurley now startling Okay because he has a knee, say on Barkley the man, he's out there. What about Melvin Gordon? Yes, he was last year. He got all
the work. He was the man before he got so he go look at if you have a bell cow that is one of those guys. I didn't say I thought that I'm saying, if that's what, If that's what for Nett wants to be. What d Filippo saying is right. That guy is on the field, he's not looking tapping his helmet, saying I need to come out. I would agree with that. He wanted to be the man, then you got to act like the man. Now I'm not s And maybe that's where len of Fordett is now,
that's not what he was last year. Maybe maybe that's where he is at now. That'd be great, that would help this team. It would be a better team if that's the style back that letter Fordette is. I got the impression that Philippo was talking about playing him this week. Yeah he is. I think I think you should play like I don't mean to break it to everybody, but why wouldn't you play him? Has he done something that I've missed? Like you just said, you just compared him
to Zeke Elliott, I didn't know. I did not. Now you're lying. You're being disingenuous. If you want to be that guy, go look at Christie McCaffrey. Look how many snaps that kid takes in regular season. Pete, Now you're being a smartass. Let's go, come on, let's not be he needs to carry the ball more Christie McCaffrey. But is he out there all the time? Yes, all the time. That's what that position. You want to be the man,
that's how you do it. I'm I'm with you. If you're going to be the guy, you gotta carry the football. But I think more and more teams are moving away from that because I don't think there aren't that many guy Okay, that's fine, but not moving away from it because they want to move away from it. They're moving away from it because there's not that many guys who can do it. Can he do it? Well, we'll find out, I hope. So that's what you drafted him to do.
I'm asking you the question. Can he don't know? I hope. So do you think you can't? I don't know, Pete, I hope. So he's dancing around it, I'm not dancing. Say that's why you shaking dafted them. They felt that on the underside of New Zealand, just when you were dancing around there. Come on, Tony, you don't you have your doubts? Sure of my doubts. I didn't. That doesn't mean, I don't hope he can do it. I haven't seen it.
I have my doubts. I haven't seen it. I hope what we've seen so far from him, including his rookie year, does not give any indication that he is that kind of guy. No, sord argue. Let's see it moving forward, though. Let's come back real quick about that. You want to talk. I want to talk more about backs when we come back, because I think I'll just say this and if we
get back to it, fine, If not, fine. That is a position and I thought about it Thursday night watching the Eagles, who had about six backs, all who can play in this league. I think that's a position group on this team that if i'm if I'm uh Caldwell, Dave Caldwell, I'm aggressively going to the waiver wires to improve that room. But I don't think it's strong enough. It's a real quick Alfred Blues banged up right right, Quil armstreads back from the concussion. I think, yes, after that,
you got maze. Maybe I'm just telling you right now, there are six back Go look at the backs that I'm just going to be back from another team on that roster but it needs to go. Look at Philly, go look at Buffalo. I mean there's some deep back there's they're gonna be a number of good back to get cut or traded for a late six seventh round pick real quick. JP, we gotta go to break You know who ran well for Buffalo when I was at Carolina Buffalo the other day. T J Yeldon. Huh hey,

it was. That's fine, it was. We're getting nothing out of this, that's okay, all right, let's get to the big reason. Information. You have a lot of good information. These are how much nicer than where's all like the scenes and everything. Remember the old days, Jimmy, they were so big, Oh the big thick thing. They'd be all bunched up, uncomfortable.
These are like tights. I look good. Those are not your size. I look good. Look at the atlastic. Where's the belt belt? He doesn't wear a belt. We used to have belts. Brandon Lender does not wear a Look at this Brandon White down to South Florida Thursday night in his home area. How many snaps is he gonna play, Jimmy, He'll probably play. Are these are these legal? They cover his knees. They cover his knees. Yeah, there you go. This is exactly the size i'd wear. What size? I'm a thirty six? What have we started here, Pete? I would look at these. These are so much the old bunched up belt places in the two interesting. It was terrible, would be great? Things are going on an offensive line. If you put that on and making a seventy one, you might start next week. You know good? I would be in these pants. Beat.
I would be money on these pants. Seventy one is available. Good, He's touched it. Jimmy, thank you so much. Man on Monday, listen to this. Maybe this may or may not be your last Monday Night show. J P. Shadrick, Tony was silly, Pete Prisco Jags and the Dolphins coming up Thursday night at hard Rock Stadium in South Florida. What are your game preview? Coming up? We'll have a conversation around blindside blocks. Tony is no one should be happy? Are you happy? Am I happy? You think it's fair? Pete thinks it's ridiculous. Oh really, Well, when we're texting, yeah, JP, I'm defending the officials who have to call it. But we'll get to that in a couple of segments from now, let's let's hold on.
I say one last thing is a tease. Even Logs, who's the defensive linement, agreed with me. Um, So we'll get to that coming up. That's so stand by for that. We'll go around the league as well. A little wide receiver talk coming up. Offensive line. We touched on it a little bit earlier, Um, you know, at least than the sessions we've been able to see lately. Um. The starters are back out there for the Jaguars on the offensive line. It hasn't happened around here in a while.
And the importance of that, I think, you know, we heard from John d Filippo today and Nick Foles on Sunday discuss how important that is to have an offensive line with some continuity, with a little bit of time together, preferably in a game before you go play Opening day. Do you buy that, Tony, Yeah, I do. I think it's it's better than it not happening. We're seeing video right now. It looks like Cam Robinson going through some
team activities that are on air. Interesting here a j Can working with the second group in the same drill you saw. It's not from today, by the way, It's well, it must have been, because Cam Cam's out there. It's not from today, never mind, it is from recently, a day or two ago. Scratch all that. The good news is Cam and Joan Taylor both out there working. Yeah,
that's what I'm saying. That's good. Now. We don't know if they did team or not, because until the last time we were on the field, Cam did not do team. He did just individual. Does he does he play in Week one? I'm gonna say yes. I think I'm gonna say yes to he's been out there long. It will have been out there long enough that he could play. Absolutely.
I think so he wants to play. Talking to Cam, this is not a situation where there he's a guy who's scared or worried about his knee or like overconcerned or hesitant at all. He wants to play now. Whether they clearer than or not, that's not him or not. That's not his call ultimately. But I know talking to him, he is communicating, Hey, I want to play football and I feel like I can't. So I think he'll be out there. Juan Taylor, I think he should be out
there too. The knee was a minor thing. That's what we were always told. Um, So I think you're gonna have the starters out there. I hope you. I would love to see them out there, and I would probably give Cam probably to series, but I would love to see him get a couple of series out there tonight. His knee is structurally fine. On Thursday, is too? U No, I don't think if he's playing tonight, another story, No Thursday. That's why I meant, yeah, so you'd like to see
him on Thursday. Series. I don't know. I don't think he was on the practice field a week and a half ago. Doesn't matter. His knee is structurally fine, he's done individual, says Dr Vaselli. Well, I mean at this point eleven months, if it's not, he wouldn't be out there in individual. If it wasn't structurally fine and strong enough, he wouldn't be cleared and let unless he had last week after individual swelling and soreness. He should be able to do team this week, and I would play him
just a couple of series. Yeah, I mean, if he's structurally sound, I would play him to just to get him some work. If he's not structural sound, you he wouldn't be out there at all. Right, they would have cleared to begin with, and if he has swelling and pain after individual, then he wouldn't practice this week. Now, we wouldn't know that because we're not out there, but according to JP, his during the period that you can
be out there, he is practicing. And we do know that his jersey was wet when it was turned into but it rained, it rained outside, so it might have just have been him sitting there and not doing anything, but jersey was wet so it's it's all the evidence we need. I'm kind of like an investigative reporter and a really nice job. I'm digging. That was good. You like that, Pete. Yeah, you learned some lessons. You got some good, good journalistic chops there. You knew you were
a journalist. Yeah, you still think you got one foot in the door. But you don't know. He admitted it last year, admitted it. I'm a media guy. Wo. It hurts to say it, but I mean I'm in the media. Here's what I want to ask you, guys, is Norwell's injuries concerning the fact that they keep piling on another They had a quad recently, right, Why anytime you spend fifteen million or fourteen or thirteen, whatever the number is, and a guy that's been at some small injuries but
have missed has missed time. Yeah, you worry about it. I would worry, wouldn't you. J. P. Well? Yeah? Yea, I would be worried about it. I want a reliable guy for that especially. He never had any injuries in Carolina, did he? No? None, I know. And the guy who coached him in Carolina was my college UH coach, offensive line coach John Matsko and John Masko speaks very highly of him. He was a self made player, made himself into a lot of money, made himself from a nobody
into a rich man and into tough kid. He's been healthy, he like started every game, and then he's had a couple of knicks and bruises here for whatever reason, it's that is concerning to me from looking at it. By the way, talking to some of the guys that I heard, the offensive line group could be tough to deal with. What do you mean how so they ain't the most accommodating is from what you talking about from media? What are you talking about? Are you talking to media from
the media. Are you talking about the jaz Wars offensive line group or offensive line in general? The Jaguars offensive line. I have no idea. They're good to me. I'm in the media and they talked to me. You're also a legend that tackles, so I mean, of course they're gonna talk to you. They're gonna pick your brain as much as they could. I would, but I think you're a great group. I had more fun with the offensive line than any other position I covered. But in fairness, I
mean because Leon was great with the media. He's in the media. I mean, you told me everything I needed to get me that was tried to be funny, was very articulate, very smart. Ben was smart. DeMarco was crazy. But you know that's a whole other story, Pete. You know in years last year, last year, there were some it was just a quiet group. And you know, Jerry Partnell didn't like talking to media at all. That was
just kind of his deal. Partell doesn't I mean, what's his name, doesn't Linda, Linda can and and does and he doesn't like to be norwell does doesn't really like it. Cam has to be good. Cam is a big personality guy Robins, Yeah, he has to be good. Cam has to be I would think Cam would be very good with the media. I would think, I don't know this. He's I mean, he's smart, he's articulate, he likes he's
I think if you see the energy. There are certain topics with him, like with the knee and the situation around when he's coming back to practice. He doesn't want to you know, get that, you know, but things are going pretty well. He can turn it on. I think you do pretty well. A J. Cann's great with the media. Fantastic. Will Richardson is very good him the other day, is Will Richardson gonna win that job? I don't think so. I don't know, Pete. He's bigger though, and you know
how they like bigger. I think he might may. I think he might win that job, which is shocking to me, not after what we've seen during preseason, because I think he's had a very good camp. But no way would I bet that coming into camp. I mean he was. He was almost an afterthought at least going into O t A s as far as them counting on him to do anything after what happened last year. Okay, okay, so give me opening day gets the chief starting line left,
the right? Uh, cam Norwell Linder who he's thinking about it? Pete thinking about it? Richardson can and uh and uh Taylor. I don't know about Richardson or Can. I can't decide for one of those two and Taylor. If Richardson starts, does that mean they shouldn't have spent the money on Can? No can just swing guy. Yeah, but they spent money on a lot of money, not a lot. I mean, he's a valuable guy. You wanted your team he's a starter, reliable,
he's healthy, he can play, you know, center or guard. Well, he's just now learning center. He watched him. He can do it. He can do a big difference when I'm just telling you can do it, JP, don't argue with me about like offensive line, I'm not. I'm just telling you a J can't told me the other day. It is a little different when you have a nose tackle in front of you. Obviously it's different. But he can. He can do it. But five million years a pretty
big hefty price for swing guy. I'm not saying he's gonna be the swing guy. I don't know what they're gonna do it right down it I'm saying it could happen. I asked the question. I think it's neck and neck right now. I think the I think the third preseason game is important one well, and you know they like bigger guys. There doesn't Who doesn't like bigger guys. Doesn't mean they're better. I didn't say they were, but most guys like if you're bigger and athletic, they like that
more than smaller and athletic would agree. Golly, that's a great question, Pete. And I'm not gonna. I'm really not trying to play the fence here. I don't know if I've watched enough of both of them to make that decision. I would probably go with a j Can just because of the experience inside. And I would probably make sure I got will Richardson reps though, and can last year if the right tackle was a messed all year right and then and the left guard and the center next
to him got hurt. I mean, you know he's playing. It's a weird situation he had. But my point of just saying, I would probably, Man, it's tough. I think I'd go with the J just because it's it might be the safer pick. But I like will Richardson a lot. He's big and physical. Yeah, maybe I go will Richardson. I'm going back and forth. I can't decide. Yeah, I would too, it's not even a question. So we just now we can cut the team. Who's annual cut the
team segment cutting the team right now? We have You don't We've never cut the team before the third before the third preseason game. We always cut it before the fourth preseason. You won't cut it, But you gotta admit Shatley could be in trouble, like Shatley and Wells are both in trouble, right, I would think Wells is off.
That's me. I think Wells is off because way way he's gonna be your swing tackle, right and if and if m if we will be the backup center that that kind of takes Sat out right, And if Will Richardson is also on the roster, he can play tackle as well. Well, there's gotta be a there's gotta be one or two more after those two, though. Yeah, I think I think you probably keep nine. Um Thomas Brandon Thomas is eight, and then that's where you get into you know, is it Shatle, It's tough. Is it another
guy who can snap? Yeah? So I think Shatley still a chance. No, No, McDermott. I've heard mc dermott's played very well during both three season games. Who's big seventy three? I can't think of his name right now, big guy, place guard, real big. I can't think of his name anyways, He's a possibility. Um, Yeah, I I think Wells. Unfortunately, I like Josh Wells a lot. My guess is he's he's odd man out right now. Dannell Green Green the big old he's a big old hoss. Yeah. Six five,
so a lot of questions. Still an offensive line, and at some point you gotta keep those young guys and hope you can develop. That's right, that's right. I think Brandon Thomas is on the team. Will Richardson's on the team. So that's seven. A j Can's on the team. Then you have the rest of the starters, and we'll see that Lee, Wells, Green and McDermott probably for that last job. Yeah, maybe you only keep eight and then go get a couple of practice tackles. Let's come back. We'll play this
game with the wide receiver room. Oh, I can't wait. Marquis Lee back at practices. Yes, that's great news. Has anybody watched it? I want to hear what you guys said, if you watch them run at all? Come back. Yes, we're can get Jimmy Luck back here, get Jimmy back. The Jackson launched the new mobile app and Secure digital ticketing. You know, we always compete and they make plays, we make plays. We're always trash talking. But I think they started to understand that we're doing that because we're trying to bring the best out of them like they
trying to bring the best out of us. There's nothing personal. You know, we're a unit, and we know come Sunday, you know, first week when they got when those guys make plays, we're gonna be happy fun because we know the word we put in. Now that's a J Boyer Jaguar's Cornerback discussing Jags wide receivers J P Shatdrick and Jacksonville, Pete Prisco down in South Florida, Tony was Sully is somewhere in the building. He'll be back. Just yeah. I think he's getting a refill. Pete is what he's doing.
That's okay, He's gotta stay away. Remember we used to go upstairs and get dinner every all the time they're on the show, right and just house food. During commercial breaks. Yes, did you get did you get my text that I sent you before about the commercials? Yes? Yes, listen to that next time you'll hear what I'm saying. It's somebody on Twitter just mentioned that actually if you're air is a good bit, and that's okay. I've never had a standwich of you. I have not either. I'm not gonna.
You know, whenever you're hunger, you want a good standwich. That's exactly how you want to say it. What do you want it? Um? Marquis Slee back in the field this week. He's fired up to be back, of course, Pete, but with good and bad days. During the rehab, he had a lot of help arounting him according to the number eleven. So you know, my biggest thing is it's a teammates that help me as far as it stand.
Com standpatient. A lot of people got injuries to stuff to man to tell me you know, I'm gonna be fine and things like that, and that's why I continue to just keep on my mind and look at me. I'm ringing all right. Markis Slee had devastating knee injury. Of course, last bad one and that's this one, you know, that's that's multiple things going on. Yes, when did you just open up? When did I open you open a
drink or something? It sounds like I just moved a cord over to my uh into my mean is it's unprofessional, Pete, at least part of this segment. What are you talking about unprofessionally today? No? No, no, I was doing some background information, trying to dig deep into story and getting ready to write release a writer now too. Well, I'm gonna I got a breaking story coming out here soon about what. Well, if I tell you it won't be breaking. It's a lot of work. I still got to go
deep undercover to get some more information. You were going to get something to eat and drink? What are you talking talking fresh coffee? He didn't. He didn't have time to get me one. He was late anyway, Well, there was a guy hogging the machine when I got late. You're late, Mark J J P. Markis sleep by the way, one of the really good dudes gets it back. Anybody you say you've seen him run, Yes, just but in the early stuff on the side, on the side and
the actually in practice. I haven't seen that because the practices have been closed the last few days. So to see him actually run in team eleven on eleven. No, I have not seen any any talk about him in the on the practice field at all. It sounds like if you ask him, obviously, he's gonna say everything's going well and according to plan, and he's you know, on track to hopefully be ready week one. I don't see this week would be a shock to me, though. I
don't see him back week one. You don't outside chance. Um if he's back week one? Uh, maybe a small package for him which goes through the bigger question. I know what you're leading to, uh, JP and Pete. Who's gonna be in that receiver's room? It's all said and downe the question? And how many do they keep? I can tell you. I can tell you the last one's got to be able to play special teams for sure. I'll tell you the four that are gonna be there
for sure. And then it becomes fuzzy to me. Okay, so the four that are gonna be there for sure are Calmly, Chark, Westbrook, Lee. Hey, I mean I don't see them cuttingly, do you? Pete? I don't either. That's four. That's the four. Then it becomes interesting to me Um, I don't think Tarrell Prior is making this team. He hasn't played in the preseason game and he plays no special team. Okay, that's my sense, could be wrong. He kind of thinks he's arrived already and he hadn't, so
I don't think he makes it either. Okay, So then you go to Quelling Cole right now, he would make it, don't you think? Well, how many are they keeping? Five or six? Maybe six? So if they make the Marquis might not be ready and so they're If they're keeping six, Kelan makes it. I think Helan does make it. I think he's the fifth who's six. So then you go to six. This is where Tray mc bride has had a great camp. He's a big receiver or bigger Um,
I think it's team's ability. I'm probably Brady. Yeah, I don't see Brady Tyree. I don't see Brad. I think it's McBride. I would say McBride is your six receiver, and that might be a spot where number six comes from somebody else's team, possibly the kid I've been impressed with, and I don't know if he's good enough to make the team. Maybe makes practice quad who's the cat from Boston College. He plays with the broken hand, Walters Walker,
that kid. I mean, I give him a lot of credit playing with a two broken finger cast on his dominant hand, still out there playing all the teams catch the ball. Yeah, but I'm not saying I just I just appreciate the competitive nature of the kid, right, I mean, I think it's awesome. I'm not saying he's making the team. I have no idea. I think he's a prime squad guy. But Tony, you'd agree that the three receivers who take the field first on opening day or Westbrook, Chart and Connolly. Yeah,
I think that's yes. Okay, Now, Chark has had a good camp in practice. But in the two preseason games, did anyone see anything that made you he had to catch? He had to catch the other night that was actually a catch, but it would have got called back. And anyways, if they challenging because of the whole I thought they re ruled it a drop. You're saying that they would have overturned it into I thought he called it. Maybe I didn't see it close enough. I thought he called
I didn't see the replay. I'm just going back. I think it was more of his feet that they called him out. Well that would be a non catch then, but I thought his feet were in Oh, I don't know. That's the one with the ball. He put the ball on the ground with his hand and on the sideline right there is Yeah, I'm with it when I first saw him, like caught it and then they work at a challenge and anyways, because it was a hold on that way either way first game. I mean, you can't
really take it off a lot of reps. I'm not saying that at all, but I mean, right, I only bring it up because I could see Marquise Lee taking that third spot and does he take it? Does he take it from Chark? Yes? Because yeah, because I see I Westbrook's the biggest year of any of them. To me too, I think Westbrook and capt sixty seventies fastest this year. Yeah, I would agree with that. Pete. Are we hanging our hat on Connley a little much? Or is it fair? Right now? I mean he's camp though
he has he's big and fast. Yeah, No, he's He's It's Conley in Westbrook for sure. And then I think it comes down to, like Tony said, between Lee and Chark, and early I wanted to probably be Chark. Now, if Chark emerges as a big play threat and shows what he showed practice, then I think the fourth guys between Conley and Chart probably if he leaves back all the way, we're gonna see run. You don't know, or you just say, like,
give Lee a lot of time to get back. So you have him on the back half of the of the season where he's playing more snaps. But those are all things you gotta play out. But I think that's the sixth you put him on PUP Tonty, he's already on. He just came off PUP. Pete, I don't think. I mean you put him on the season pup. Yeah, and he's the six weeks he has to stay on, right Pete? The return Yeah, I don't think. Well, it depends how
he comes through practice the next couple of weeks. You'll you'll see that and maybe he's not ready and then you do it. But you could put him on the injury reserve and be one of the guys you pull back, right. Yeah, I don't think you want to do that. I put him on PUP first. Can you put them on Pete? Can you put him on pup if he's already been practicing. I don't think you can. I don't think you take them off and put them right. I don't think you take him off pup and put him back on. Let's
come back. We'll get into blind side blocks against the rules. It's it's a tragedy that this was. If this is called during the regular season, listen to the game broadcast on the radio. We'll listen no matter what, because it's much better than anything else. I will lose it. You will hear me officially lose it. Well beyond, we'll come back. The rules are the rules, will they're not? The rules are not the rules the rule literally are the rules. They're not. If that's a rule, I don't want it.
I don't want any part of that rule. Florida State Seminals are gonna try to plant the spirit t I A August thirty one against the Boise State Broncos. Yes, but we're getting home late five o'clock public S tailgate show Thursday. So what time do you think we'll get home? Not that anyone cares. No, but I would get home the same time it got to the stadium, and I still have to drive from the stadium to home. There. There might be some of the plane that wants you to do that, Tony. I think there's a lot of peop would like me to drive. No, I can't do that.

Do you're in Miami? Should just come hang with us because I gotta go do the Saints. I'm a man about the country, you know how I am. He's the senior writer CBS Sports. He is, he is senior. I heard you talking about being a seminole again. Is your son your son's back at back playing football, Pete? Is
he starting? Uh? He is competing for the job? Tenter. Yes, I don't know. I actually and I'm saying this all honestly and all honestly honesty, sorry and all honesty. Let me speak English here. Um, I'm not I have nothing, not nothing. It's his, it's his deal. I just support him. So I talked to him as much as he wants to talk about it. What's going on. I snow he's competing for he loves it. It's it's the most fun he's had playing football since probably his junior in high school.
So I'm happy for him. So he's excited. He's walked back on out there. He's uh currently a walk on a Florida State and uh, he's excited to play. I'm excited to watch the team play. Whether he plays or not gets Boise State, I'll be we'd be more excited if he's starting. Oh, obviously anybody. I mean, yes, he's my son, but I'm gonna be there to support him regardless. Um going to the game, the whole family to cheer on the knowles. I heard they's gonna be about sixty
five Boys State fans at that game. Sixty five or sixty five thousand Boise State. Not they're not traveling to that game. I have no idea. I have not heard anything. That's the next Saturday, right, so it's a week from Saturday. Yeah, looking forward to that. Are you gonna go, Pete? No, I watch it though. I want to see I want to see a little BLI playing. I don't know if he's playing or not, but I'm excited for I'm excited football season kicks off called Saturday Night, Saturday Night Florida,
Miami and Orlando. I mean, that's exciting. I cannot wait. I love by the way. I saw an interview with him. Looks like he went from a youthful looking guy to a man. Now, who's that your son? Oh? Yeah, he had a big interview online I saw, and he has like a full beard. He looks like yeah, like, I mean he has a full beard, like I'm not sure. He looks like me with facial hair, like I can grow facial hair, but it's a little bit patchy, like I can't. I have too many patches to go to
full beard. He goes full beard. So yeah, he looks. It's too bad for him because he looks a little like you. I think I did just fine with my wife thinks I'm very sexy. Let's move along, shall we. Speaking of offensive, there was a tweet after the last week's games by the NFL out of NFL officiating very bothersome. River On is the vice president officiating for the league, and he kind of review some calls and puts them out online to kind of explain some things and he said.
In the Detroit Houston game, Detroit's number seventy six goes back toward his own inline and forcibly blocks his opponent with his shoulder, and by rule, this is a blind side block. There was a video that goes with it from the TV feed of the offensive line in the right guard going back when the defensive ends coming back around behind the quarterback to hit him and got him kind of in the head with a shoulder, and they
call that a blind side block. Which all blind side blocks, either parallel or or going back towards your own inline, are illegal no matter the situation. This year, if they're a forcible contact, if you touch them with the hands or block them out like basketball, that's legal. But you can't forcibly with the head, shoulder, or forearm hit an opponent. Somebody explain the play. So it's a drop back pass play action. The right tackle gets beat a little bit.
Actually it's a tight end now it's the right tackle gets beat a little bit on the edge. The defensive end is rounding around as the quarterback is epping up. As he rounds around, he starts chasing the quarterback who's stepping up in the pocket. The right guard, like every right guard is supposed to do, peels back and blocks him so he can't kill the quarterback and protect him in the pocket. Great play, smart play by the right guard.
He is flagged because the rule this year you're not allowed to go backwards towards the end zone has me or even parallel. You have to be in front of them to block them. No, that's not the rule forcibly blocked. If he in front of him, Tony, he would have been fine. Okay, but Pete, here's my question. In front of him? So he's just supposed to stand there and let the guy hammer him. How is that? How is that safe? Didn't say that you can block him. You
don't have to crush him with a forearm in the head. Okay, but the guy's running full speed at you. What are you supposed to do? You can use your you know, you can use your arms to extend, so just punch him down. Yeah. I don't like it. I don't like it either. That's a good football play. That was always a great shot to get somebody. That's a good football play. So he's trying to make the game safer. Enough of this. I've had these conversations I'm not having the conversation gainst
here about the safeness. You not the better when JP starts taking the league. This is a good football play. So so you're telling me they if he just shields them, it's fine. Yes. And if he uses his hands, he uses, if he extends his hands to give him a job, it's fine. Here's the official rule, by the way, on the league operations site, It's prohibited for a blocker to initiate forcible contact with his head, shoulder, or forearm when the path is toward or parallel to his own in line.
There you have it. That's the right. Whatever. Them's the rules. They're enforcing them. I don't. I don't like it. We'll call the competition committee in the ownership then, like I like. I don't like it either. I'll be honest. I like that. I like. I like no peel back box in the open field because that could be dangerous in the It's crazy, but they should have it like in the pocket. Like a lot of rules, it goes. It's fine if you're within the pocket or within the tackle box, you can
peel back and protect the quarterback. What's more important protecting the defensive and or protecting the quarterback in this league, sure, yeah, I mean it's more more important to protect the quarterback. So even Tony in that scenario, if that's happening, a player is going to protect this quarterback can take the flag rather than I didn't get blasted from and if
his offensive line. Coach, I tell my guys to now, to JP's point, you can do it where it's legal, just use your hands, and so you gotta teach it. You gotta change mentality. And I know what they're trying to change the mentality, and they don't want guys taking shots with their shoulders or you know. It used to be don't leave with your helmet. Now it's don't leave with your shoulder pats or your forearm. I mean, pretty soon we're gonna be playing patty cake and like just
patty cake each other out there. Um, which is fine whatever, that's what they want. And you want to protect guys, I get it. You're and you're gonna have to teach get it in the open field not there, but they're gonna have to just use their hands and it it'll be a less physical The bottom line is the game is becoming less physical and less violent. But if you're able to keep them off the quarterback with your hands,
isn't that better? It's just my point is and when I say this, I'm not saying it's the wrong It's probably the right strategy where we sit as a society today, and how what you know, how the things evolve and how people feel about certain aspects and the cultural sediment, especially when he comes to head injuries and a lot
of things. But Pete, would you agree the game of football is becoming less physical and less violent over the than it was, of course, and that's a that's an offshoot of everybody complaining about it, worried about safety and
concussion settlements and everything else. Of course it is, and it's trickling down, and kids aren't playing football tackle football anymore, which is why, which why, which is why the NFL is doing the smart thing if you take everything out of it, take the meathead position or me sometimes is saying I don't like certain things because of how I grew up playing football. The big picture, the NFL is right.
You want to make the game is like as welcoming as possible for the younger generations who it continues to grow. And the only way to do that is to make rules that protect players and take the what they view is unnecessary hits to the head out of the game. I don't mind kids not playing football until they're like twelve, thirteen years old. Why tackle? Tackle? Why The safest time, the safest the game of football will ever be is when the pads weigh more than the kids and they
can't move fast enough to hurt themselves or anybody else. Yeah, but I don't know me either way, Tony, Okay, I mean you want to know the most dangerous times sometimes the football is in high school. I've seen the most vicious hits in high school because you have one kid who has developed at seventeen or eighteen that's gonna be a five star Division one football player going against some sophomore junior in high school that has no business even being on the field, and the collisions are like, oh
my gosh. Like I coached at a school like we are going to put like we would purposely protect our kids knowing that they could not compete like you can't, and like there was only a handful of kids on our team that could handle those kids and guess what they were typically ones going to play college football and so there's the disparity of skill set. That's where it
because more dangerous when they're little. Like that's where the coaching comes in in a big way, like, Hey, let's protect our kids in high school and make sure the matchups make sense and we're not gonna put kids out there where they're really going to get hurt. Plus, kids are so big. I mean, you go to a high school game and look at those kids. They're gigantic. Selly, what were you in high school to twenty? No? No, no, I was six six and seven tot. But you weren't
three ten. These kids I played against you guys were two nine. Not many though, you gotta meet The kids are much bigger now. Oh. I mean I look at my own kid who's playing in Florida State in high school. He was six four to nine. Wow, I mean I was like, I never pl Yeah. I was talking to Tommy mis Lnsky. His kid plays over there where Kenny now and he's six three and two eighty or something to seventy. The kids are big, they're they're well, the
training is better, the nutritions better. Um, it's all they developed quicker. I'll tell you what I told you the story. Once. I went and saw my old high school coach a couple of years ago, and he was still coaching, and I looked at him and I go, holy crap, you got giant kids out there. But the hell was I laying? If I'm here, I'm not playing. It's different. I mean that sense, it's different, So I understand what this goes.
All the way back. I didn't like the fact that that that they called the flag on that play with the people back pocket. The reality is, you're right, j It is the rule and they called it correctly. And I do applaud the NFL trying to take unnecessary big hits out of the game. It's just different, whether I like it or not. Did I miss the like? I miss the like You don't miss the blasts in the middle of the field. I'm not. There's no need for that.
What I do miss is like the gamesmanship that can happen in the trenches, and like you just can't do that stuff anymore, which is fine. Don't do that story, Tony. When I was out there with the offensive lineman, they put on the tape of the Dallas Green Bay games back in the day when the Dallas had the great offensive line, and they were all sitting there going, oh my god, they're beating the daylights out of each other. Flag that would be a flag now, flag now, flag
now flag? Then the game is that's only years ago when I mean when I played it with the fist fight in there, I mean, you're on the ground, you're taking shots, you're cutting people, were jump you, hands in the faces, head button. I mean, there's this stuff that you can't do anymore. Which whatever, it's fine, it's probably better. Um, it's just it's a different because it's really better that
they took it off the defensive side though. Those those those shots were getting out of control, the big hits on thee, on the crosser and all that, they were out of control. But they went on forever. Remember the shots that Ronny Want used to take on guys, Yeah, and they were they needed to be taken out of the game. Look as much as we used to go wow, look at that, then the guy be laying there, nobody would even think twice about the guy on the ground.
I know, it's crazy. It's such a different mentality. I mean, it really is, um, But you know, you're right, Pete. I mean those there's no reason. What I do like is them taking the helmet out. There's no reason to use the helmet as a weapon. There's no need for it. The NFL should take that out and you should be penalized. And by the way, growing up, it was always a rule you're not allowed to spear, or they just never
called it, and so now they're really on it. My only issue with that is I think it's such an unfair thing we do to the officials to ask them to call it in real time without any chance to replay. Like those bang bang hits over the middle of the field where the defenders do it perfectly. They hit with their shoulder, but they hit the guy so hard in the chest that the head snaps back. That's a clean, good hit. I'm okay with those. Were like a tackler coming in and low and the guy goes low and
he ends up hitting him in the head. Yeah, whose is that? There's nothing you know, there's certain things that I think replay need to help those officials out. So but overall I agree with the NFL, um you have to train the offensive line. I see why. That's Apparently you make a great point jp use your use your hands. Yes, you did you want me over? On this argument? I'm okay with it. I don't love any but I'm okay. Huh.
And you hurt your hand trying to do that no more than a bull rush when the guy bull rushes you as an office tackle, So use your hands. Do you know what JP? You want me over? I was really upset today earlier day, and you know what your reasoning is right. What the NFL is doing is right. Win for JP. I've been won over by year argument. Put it on the board. We're back. In a moment, we'll go around the National Football League. I'm gonna celebrate

We're back Jaguar's Happy Hour. J P. Shadrick some movie theme? What is this show that's from NFL films? Come on, j P, it's embarrassing this one. Tony was Sally Pete Frisco. That music, though, does mean it's time to go around the National Football You don't know this one and and
and it gets going real fast. Listen to it. Youn't know? Okay, right, let's move on. That's nice. Let's start with Antonio Brown. Helmet drama continues. Helmet he found, Oh I know this one now, great j answer. Helmet he found failed to test Raiders GM Mike Mayott wants to know if he's all in or all out. Sounds like the crossroads here pete for Antonio Brown and showed up today. So you're only an employee of the Oakland Raiders and you you decide you're gonna go eight wall when you you don't
like your helmet comes tired of this guy. He keeps himself in the news. It's tiring. He's not worth the aggravation. His yards for catchment down almost two yards last year. And that's a sign that you're aging. Uh. Look, if I'm the open Raiders and he doesn't show up in the next and take part in practice in the next couple of weeks, good riddance. Well there's a little money. Yeah, they're limited what they can do. I know, but he's tiring.
This is all you need to know is that Pittsburgh Steelers were willing to take twenty one million dollars against their cap and give up draft and only take a fourth or fifth round draft pick to get rid of him. I'm forgetting to enjoy up in Week seventeen last year. Remember that's my whole point. My point is another NFL team says, listen, we would rather take the hit get rid of him. We just take him off our hands. And now the Raiders have the issue to deal with.
And I like the man Mike Mayo came out and I would say that if I would, I would even go step furthest and listen. If you're not gonna show up, you're gonna we're gonna conduct detrimental We can start taking your money, uh, taking away your guaranteed uh salary. I mean, there's ways you can really affect Antonio's uh, Antonio Brown's earning power. And that's the only that's the only thing you're gonna do to get this guy's attention. To my opinion, we start taking his money. And I would do it
immediately if I'm the Raiders, because it's ridiculous. Everyone else is wearing a dang helmet. Where are your helmet? And everyone else on his own team is practicing, you know what I mean, these guys are trying working their butts off, and he decides up going here. I'm going to my arbitration hearing. I don't like my helmet, my feet are messed up. I mean, it's it's it's just a disaster already.
But you know what, he'll be there week one and they'll throw him the football probably seven times or eight times, right, two touchdowns? Right? Yeah, you fantasy Pete. Now I will say, yeah, oh yeah, I would never do anything. I don't think he's half the player of it. I just think he's slowing down some Uh. Jerry Jones had some comments about Ezekiel Elliott. Well, there was exactly so it's overblown, he said it in jest. Overblown, overblown, non story, overblown. Well,
the the agent doesn't think so it was disrespectful. It doesn't matter. He was holding out. That matters. So is holding out? Is being disrespectful and something? Yeah, people would think that, right when you have two years left a new deal, I think I think, uh, there's much to do about nothing. Don't forget a bookmarks something we gotta get to. By the way, is he getting a new contract? I think so would you pay him, Pete, I'd be careful with it is, you know, if he wants the
girly money plus some. No, if he wants, you know, David Johnson's girl slash girly money, then probably yes, he's got two years left in that deal. But he what if he sits out for five games and then comes back, then the Cowboys are one and four and they're done right. Well, I I read something very interesting the other day which I actually think I agree with the running backs should break off and make their own union. Did you read
that article, Pete? Well, no, But the point was is they are the one position that is treated completely differently because of the life expectancy of or the career expectancy that life a career expectancy of a running back. And a lot of times these guys get used up in their rookie deal and they don't get the second deal right, draft them, run him into the ground, and draft another one.
So if you're back, that's why Zeke saying like, wait a second, you're not gonna use me up as one of the best backs and not pay me, Well, then you're gonna sit out for a couple of years. You're gonna be uh an old man who hasn't had carrots. I mean, you know what I mean. I don't blame Zeke the other day and had aver date yards for rush behind that offensive line. My whole point is I don't blame Zeke for holding out Kyler Murray was bookmarked
for this segment there in the show. Yes, Pete, what did you think about his You know everyone was raving after the first week, how great it was. Then last week that preseason game two, he was not very good. A number of issues. Well he was going to take at the game in week one, I was there. He didn't do anything. They didn't do anything any sort of their offense whatsoever. It was all little boots with double tight ends. He's never he's not gonna use double tight ends,
and it made it easier on him. That wasn't their offense. Again in week two, it wasn't their offense, and so I thought the Raiders. I went back and watched because I you know, I didn't see the game when it was happening. I was actually at a game. But people said he was a disaster. I think blitzed them all over the place. The line didn't make it. They weren't ready for any protections on that and he got hit a bunch. So I think, like we said earlier Tony preseason,
you gotta cast it all aside. What is your Where do you stand on Kyler Murray as far as being successful or not as a franchise quarterback. I thought when he was drafted that he was way overdrafted. I still believe that I'll not take for me, I'm not taking a five foot ten quarterback. He is intriguing by the fact that he can really throw that football. But I'll give you an example in the game the other day, and I sent out a tweet with this this two
pictures of the showing this. He threw down one and one. Don't want you to blitz, don't gap blitz. He had one on one on the outside and he tried to make the throw on the outside, which sometimes you could do. But if he looks inside, he's got a slot receiver that's on a safety that's gonna run for a touchdown. He doesn't see him. That's gonna be a problem for him. Interesting. I just think it's one of the stories that I am looking forward to watching this year. And Arizona is
fascinating to me for two reasons. One, Kyler Murray five ten quarterback, there's not a lot of them that have had success. Russell Wilson's about five ten, five eleven. I mean he has had success. So it'll be interesting to see if Kyla Murray, who's similar stature a little shorter, yeah, a little bit. And then another thing is Cliff Kingsbury right does his offense because everything you read like he's gonna go ten personnel, one back, no tight ends, four
receivers and spread everyone out. It's not something that you have not seen in this league. Is the base offense, Like that's the other than the run shoot back in the day. But even then, didn't they have a tight one tight end? Wasn't that more a level personnel? They went on a lot of and and remember that was when then people started blitzing it and beating the daylights out of the quarterback. Yeah, it'll be interesting. I'm fascinated to see how Kyler Murray does it, Cliff Kingsbury does
I think I'm looking forward to it. Probably away with that today, though, Pete, because you can't hit the crap out of the quarterback anymore. It's I think it's easier to do yea so peache right. Running shoot was ten running shoot was ten personnel, one back, four wide receivers. It's Cliff Kingsbury's base offense. We haven't seen it since then. I'm very interested to see Josh Gordon reinstated by the league. Does he play. I don't know if he's playing. And Pete,
I'll let you comment on this. All I'm gonna say is I'm rooting for I'm rooting for him. I want him to be sober, I want him to be successful. I want him to see through this issue. I do too. I do too. But you know what they might do. They might put him on the reserve not report list and keep him out until later in the season. That's a possibility. And one final thought tonight. Longtime CBS sports comment haitor Jack Whittaker passed away at the age of
ninety five years old. He was wounded in France and World War two twenty two years with CBS part of the ABC Olympics coverage, and he had played by a play of the first twenty one Super Bowls, the only man to do that. And he passed away at ninety five years of age. What a pro. That guy was for sure. Where's that contract? I want to sign it for nine right now? I'll take I will take nine to day. Done, done deal. But like my dad, But my dad, so he says, if you signed a contract
for is gonna be one hell of a year. Pete will talk to you next week. Beats CBS Sports Senior Writer Tony Vaselli, Joe Fortunato, Brent rebar Our, Entire Jaguars dot Com Crue, Ashman Sullivan, David Candice, Max Hawkman, Patrick Kavanaugh, Brian Sect, and I'm Jp Shattterck will see you next time.
