It is Thursday, August eighth. This is Jaguars Happy Hour and now a guy with the look of an Olympic artistic swimmer, J. P. Chackick, and welcome in. It is Jaguars Happy Hour on Thursday, August eighth. Preseason week one is here. The Jaguars and the Kansas City Chiefs coming up. And here's what's coming up on the show today, Chiefs Jaguars.
Both teams playing their starters in the first quarter, at least we'll get to that coming up, a first chance for the coaches to work on their operation during a game. There is a new defensive staff this year, so who's talking to who? At what point we'll talk a little bit about that. The young players making their debut under
the lights for the first time in the NFL. And we'll hear from the head coach Doug Peterson on You Guessed at the Doug Peterson Show that's at five o'clock on the Jaguars Radio Network, the best of his press conference from earlier today. We're on ten to NEXL ninety two point five FM, Jaguars dot Com, Jaguars YouTube. Also hit us on x at JP Shadwick at Logs five six. Jeff Logoman with me now here in the Hyundai studios of the Miller Electric Center. Good afternoon, Jeff, Good afternoon,
Good afternoon. How you doing. I'm well. Are you ready? It's game week? Are you ready for some football? I think I've heard that song before. Well is it real football? Though? Yes, it's better than no football. The first you know, a couple drives it will be right, well, I mean kind of, but I mean it's not. It's not. It's not real yet, but it's it's close enough to kind of feel the need that you've been that itch or whatever that you've been wanting to scratch. Scratched it an inch, So I
like it from that standpoint. I also, look, I love this time of year just because you know, you see a lot of new players that you've been watching throughout the offseason, and you think you have an idea of where they are from one watching their college film and then two laying your eyes on them in person and then through training camp. But until you get into a game type situation against quality talent, Okay, on the other side of the field, it's hard to really understand exactly
where a player is gonna fit. You might have an idea, and the coaches might have an idea, but the reality is you really don't until you see the lights get bright. Chief Saguars game presented by ticket Master, the official ticket marketplace of the Jacksonville Jaguars and the National Football League. Well, Andy Reid said it earlier this week that he'll play the chief starters in the first quarter or standing, which
he normally does. And Doug Peterson used to work for Andy Reid, you might have heard, so he takes that same idea a lot of times. And so that means the world champs will be in town Saturday night with it. Patrick Mahomes on the field for a little bit and some of those frontline players against the a new look Jaguars defense and vice versa Jaguars offense, Trevor Lawrence against that Chiefs team. Are you surprised, because I am okay,
we've seen I don't know. The fines came out from the Detroit Giants practices, the two hundred thousand dollars fine for each team for fighting. Are you surprised? Andy Reid and Doug Peterson have a relationship that goes back right many years. Aren't you surprised that there was no practices with the Chiefs this week leading up to the preseason game. I mean, I don't know. I kind of take this and I haven't talked to anybody about this. I'm just
spectat neither. I have just full speculation. If I'm the world champion Chiefs, I'm not going anywhere. Why would you go somewhere else? You know they're gonna come to us. Good point. Maybe that's the wrong perspective. I don't know. Yeah, And maybe they're doing it next week against another team. I don't know they're schedule after this, so maybe they've set it up differently. I know the Jaguars are next week the Buccaneers. The Buccaneers and what two days of
practice and in the game. I'm looking forward to that. That's hopefully there's no uh, there's no fighting going on. Yeah, the league with the two hundred thousand dollars, fine, I guarantee you that Doug Peterson is going to be having a conversation with his football team because I know if I'm the head coach, I don't want my pocket booklet getting any lighter. I mean, look, I like my money. I'd like to keep it that way, like to keep
that money in my pocket. But you know, sometimes in football, you know, there's a lot of testosterone, you know, a lot of positioning, so to speak. You know, they got alpha dog and alpha dog, and there can only be one alpha dog. What's the second dog? Whoever? You figure out who the alpha is, that's a great question. Beta dog is that's a great question. Is that the second I don't know the answer to that. I'm gonna have
to gts it. The depth chart released for the first time in the first game release of the season, and we heard from defensive coordinator Ryan Nielsen this week. He asked about the first defensive depth chart his first season with the Jaguars, and he said, you know what, the depth chart is etched in sand. Great line, great line, but is it really you know what, here's the reality the top part. No, here's the reality. The lineups are
always etched in sand in the National Football League. And the reason why because if you've get another player who's better than said player that's in the top of the lineup, the reality is he's going to get replaced if Trevor Lawrence all of a sudden and this is obviously just hypothetically. Here, let's say all of a sudden, Mac Jones came in here was just lighting it up, I mean lightening it up,
you know. And he was an undrafted guy. And Trevor Falters, you know, has a couple of bad games, turns the ball over all of a sudden. This other kid goes in maybe in one of those games, and lights it up, leads the team to the NFL's greatest comeback. I mean, could you not maybe foresee a change. I mean, you know, you never know. I'm just saying is that performance always speaks louder than what the card says as far as
lineups go. But the other thing that I will point out that Ryan Nielsen brought up and I thought that this was I thought this was outstanding. He said that if you have pads on on game day, we consider you a starter and that you have to play. And the one thing that is for certain with his defense, they're gonna roll that defensive front end waves this year.
I really believe that. You know, in the past, under Mike Caldwell, they would have kind of the main guys would play the bulk of the snaps and the main guys you might consist of six or seven guys. If there's eight or nine guys active on game day on the defensive front. With that four to three, they're all gonna play. They're all gonna play one hundred miles an hour and then get out and then the next guy go in. But the bulk of the snaps are still
going to go to a Josh and a Trayvon. Yeah, but they're gonna roll, I think, more frequently than what they have done in the past, and I like that. But they're not gonna roll it like corner Tyson. Campbell's not gonna like go out for you know, three series in the game. You know, but Josh Allen, Josh Heinz Allen may end up coming out for three series in the game for somebody else. Kevin Gibson to say that, Trevis, Trevis Gibson, Yeah, thank you. But yeah, so yeah, everybody's
gonna play, and I like that. That's what it should be. The twenty twenty four season is almost here. You don't want to miss the matchups this season for the Jags, and whether you want to become a season ticket member, catch three or more games with Bundle at the Bank, or experience the season with prowpass. There's a plan for every fan get locked in at Jaguars dot com, slash tickets well cold nine oh four six three three, two thousand, It's Jaguars Happy Hours into XL ninety two point five FM,

We'll hear more from this from Doug Peterson and The Doug Peterson Show at five o'clock today. But I asked him today in his press conference about Ryan Neils a great question, by the way, great question, would he be upstairs or downstairs? He's like, you know, I don't know. He really thought
about that. It was awesome. But then he followed it up with his own answer, saying that Press Taylor, as he had answered earlier, Press Taylor will be calling plays in the preseason, Press Taylor will be downstairs, which is a new development. So Press Taylor will be on the sideline calling offensive plays, and that gives them an opportunity to make corrections a little quickly and a little more quickly, and the adjustments will be there. So I found that
fascinating that we're two days out. What was fascinating to me. Again, Doug does not like the question about who's calling the right his face when I think it was Hayes Carl I got him today. Oh he just he just gets this like he's got a sour look on his face just for a second, and then he's like, Okay, here
it is and you just swallowed a line. But I thought he had a great answer when he talked about and explained what it's like to be calling plays in the booth versus on the sideline, and I thought it was very revealing. I loved his answer. He said, you know, when you're on the sideline. Some things that he pointed out. I think it was like four points that he pointed out. You can have conversations directly with the players, you can feel the pulse of the game, you can make corrections immediately.
There was one other thing, and I forget what it was, but it essentially it's a big difference, and that by being there, you can be there. On the flip side of that, what he didn't talk about. There's a lot of coaches that I've talked to about why they like being in the booth is that as a play caller, you can take the emotion out of the game, and so you detach a little and so you're watching it from kind of that all twenty two Schematically you can
see the scheme. You're detached from the emotional part of the game and you're just trying to make the best call for your team. So I think there's something to be said that there's positives and negatives on both sides versus being in the booth and then also being on the sideline. And this will be new for Press Taylor.
The one thing though, that you do have to have after many conversations that I've had with coordinators that make the calls through the years, is that they said, if you're going to be on the sideline, you have to have somebody that you trust, that is your eye in the sky, that can give you the information that maybe you would normally glean yourself from being in the booth. And that's critical. So who would that be for Press
Taylor don't know the answers to that. I mean, they might just be working through that, you know, because it's the first time doing it. And same thing with Ryan Nielsen. Now you have you know, if Ryan's on the field, is christa Shard in the booth. I would imagine it's gonna be one or the other. I don't know if Christmashard would be able to stay beside himself in the booth, like he's that kind of energy guy. He needs to
be on the field. He's the coach that wears cleats on the practice the bottom three I think, by the way, right, come on, so it'll be fascinating to see it. It always is. And uh, this is the part of the year. The preseason games are a test for some of the stuff and if it doesn't work, they'll try it different next week and the week after then they'll figure it out for week one. And that's a great point. It is
it's a it's an exercise, it's a test. And as a coaching staff, you think you have an idea of maybe how you want to do things, but until you actually touch it, feel it, execute it, then you know. Then you make the call. But it's good, I mean, it's good having that flexibility. And by the way, I'm so fired up that this first preseason game is the Kansas City Chiefs. I mean, this is the this is the and in the National Football League, I mean this is two times looking to be a three peat champion.
Arguably has four of the best players at their positions in the National Football League, and then numerous others that are I would consider top five at their positions. I mean, this is a great I'm gonna say it's a measuring stick because it's a preseason game. They're not scheming for that, right, I mean, so you can't look at the scoreboard and go, ah, you know, we lost. For yeah, if the Jags defense shuts out the starting Chiefs offense, you're gonna hear about it. Yes,
you know. But but again, they're not game planning. They're not. But that's just the way it's gonna be. But what I like about it is, and for me, it's it's more of the film that you get from it. Okay, so they have really good players, and so what you're trying to do is figure out the players that you're going to have played during the regular season. So getting an evaluation off your players that are facing really good players, that's what you're looking for. That's the magic of having
this matchup in the first preseason game. It's not a matter of Okay, we scored twenty points against Kanas City, Well, you might have scored twenty points against kan City when they sat Chris Jones down or maybe never played him at all, and they also sat a whole bunch of other guys down and they ran one coverage for those twenty points. I mean that some teams do that, they don't play game plan coverages as a defense and then offensively. And here's the other reality. Ryan Nielson's got the gift
of surprise a little bit here. What's this really gonna look like? Yeah, exactly, so you know, And I think the depth chart kind of speaks a little bit to that, just in my opinion. But my point of that is is that look, he's gonna have a little bit of an advantage for a little bit, okay, for a hot minute, and that he can go into Week one against the Miami Dolphins and maybe Mike McDaniel doesn't know exactly what he's going to run as a defense as far as
personnel and what positions, what kind of coverage. Because when you put a new staff together, even though they can go back and they will look at your film from the Atlanta Falcons, the reality is is that when you have new coaches that come and join this guy that came from Atlanta. There's always going to be a little bit of a blend and a little bit of difference from the previous stop in Atlanta. How long is a hot minute technically in the NFL? Yeah, about a week
and a half about it. That's about I guess that's about right, you know, because I mean once you get it on the film, I mean, and everybody's kind of got an idea. And you know the other thing too, that we're looking forward to JP, and I know we're going to get to this the kickoff stuff, you know, the new kickoff stuff. And JP was a celebrity this week. He was was I asking questions of uh, I mean, I had a question I answer. It was a great question.
By the way. The former NFL official who now is in the league office, Walt Coleman, who was an outstanding of in the National Football League, longtime official, he did a great job. One thing he didn't clarify that I'm going to try to get clarified and we'll talk about this later though. I'm going to talk to some of the officials prior to the game, but also JP next
week when the Bucks are in town. We're going to have the advantage of the officials are going to be here in training camp, and so we'll be able to
have some conversations with them as well. Go get some answers these I don't know about answers, but I love that the league does that that they give They give media members points of emphasis about So I mean, look, because I mean you're getting ready to call a game and you want to make sure that you're accurate, and because if you're not, then I think you're doing a disservice to the broadcast audience. Log I know you and I have been to the Firehouse Subs in San Marco, right,
we've been there before together? Yeah, a few times? Yeah, I think so. But if you go tomorrow from three to four pm Friday, August ninth, a very special event. But I love the Halopeeno chips and also baked barbecue laies. I kind of go back and forth going now. My daughter likes to straight to data chips. Miss Vicki's she no, no, I can't remember what they're called. Oh wow, my daughter gets the boring turkey sandwich with wheat and cheese. And
that's it. Okay, go check out the Jaguars at Firehouse tomorrow. Order some food while you're there. This is tenon Xcel ninety two point five FM and this is Jaguars appiout.
They do a lot of things together, you know, they're families. And I do think that there's the more you spend time with people, this is why I do things like
in the off season with the team. The more we can do things together and share experiences together, I think it just becomes stronger bond, you know, with individuals and with your you know, with your teammates, and you begin to sort of understand the other person a little bit more, how they think and and and it's you know, it shows up on the field.

can do whatever you want, all right. Hey. By the way, the Doug comment there about team building things and the question that he answered there was more about Christian Kirk and Trevor Lawrence and then it morphed into more of a team answer. But the connection between teammates, yes, and just a real quick thing like in the off season, Doug Doug does a great job with this and that they do team building things. For example, they've done paintball.
This past offseason, they did a bowling thing to where they went to the bowling lanes and had a full blown competition. And I know that the Jaguars, the Hunt Cisco was kind of big into that and was trying to act like he was a good bowler, but he was really not a good bowler. Really. Yeah, it didn't look very good. He didn't have very good form. But but you know, look Trevor, I'm sure he was dressed well though. That's fine, He's always That's what I'm saying.
That's fine. Yeah, but the relationship between Trevor and Christian is pretty unique and special. I mean, these guys play golf together, their neighbors, their wives and themselves get together, and I mean that's a that's a that's a pretty big deal. And and you can tell that the relationship is strong just to why the way that those two the way they connect on the field, you can tell that those two guys they got something. And at some point you'd like to say that Gabe has kind of
something similar. And I'm not saying they need to be the best of friends off the field. But the more that you can build that relationship off the field, I think the more the relationship, the stronger it is to weather tough times when you're on the field, whether it's Gabe Davis or Brian Thomas Junior. Now Brian Thomas Junior is gonna have to come out of a show a little bit. My question is how long does that take? I mean for a rookie especially, but even Gabe Davis,
a guy who's been in the league. You can go work it all off season and everything, but you don't really know until the season gets you right. Yeah, well, but I mean, look that they're putting in the work now, Gabe Davis and Trevor Lawrence and Brian Thomas. So I think does it take more of regular season stuff? Sure it does. It. The more you get, the better you're
gonna be. But with Gabe Davis, he's had a lot of snaps with a really good quarterback in Buffalo, so I think the time that it takes to develop that relationship is much less than it's going to be with a Brian Thomas junior. Gave Davis is a total pro by the way, total total pro. Some of the things that he does when you watch the film on him, and I'm not talking about just in practice, but watching him in the past when he has been in Buffalo, the little things that he does to get open down
the field are amazing. He's crafty, incredibly crafty. He is a great compliment to this offense. And I said this before, I'm gonna say it again. If I had a choice between Gabe Davis and Calvin Ridley and the money's equal, I'm taking Gabe Davis in this offense just because he's somebody different. And by the way that you hear Trevor lauding Parker Washington today and this press conference, absolutely okay, Parker Washington's another reason why he didn't need a Calvin Ridley.
Parker Washington is going to be a good football player for this team. I think this wide receiver group is going to be really interesting to watch. The part that's gonna be interesting to watch for me is last year in the preseason, Elijah Cooks was I think the highest rated player according to PFF in the preseason, which okay, it's PFF, and but the reality is other teams are going to notice that where does he fit? Where does he fit? Where does Tim Jones fit? Tim Jones a
good special teams player, really good special teams player. Once you get passed four guys, that fifth guy, he's got a ball on teams now, I mean he's got to be really good on special teams. Ken Ken Elijah Cooks be that guy special team and break through that. Yeah, it's a good question. I don't see him being better than Tim Jones. Gabe Davis, Christian Kirk, Brian Thomas Junior, Devin DuVernay four. Yeah, and DuVernay's kind of a little bit of that. Uh. I guess it's similar to thirty
nine last year. Jamal Agnow he has but he's more of a polished receiver than a and he's going to be active on game day because he can play special team. He's a returner. Right, So that's four. That means you got two spots left for Parker Washington's five. He ain't go anywhere. And then so there's really one spot if you're keeping sings, and that one's got to be special teams. Got to be a special team. Tim Jones is the kind of the incumbent in that role. Tim Jones does
a great job on teams. I mean, it's just you can't ignore that. I mean, can you imagine going to your coaches and saying, you know, hey, you know, look, I get it, Luke and Heath. You know that you guys want to have you know, Tim Jones, but you know we're thinking about keeping somebody else who's not as good. Wait a minute, that doesn't work for me, right, because the time he's going to see the field in theory is special teams. Yes, all the receivers are healthy and going.
And for example, and I think you bring up a great point. Okay, let's let's focus in on Elijah Cooks here for a minute, not to be critical of him, but if he's going to be active on game day as a wide receiver, who was he going to replace? Yeah, Gabe Davis, who you're sitting down, not gonna be gay.
It would have to be an injury situation exactly. So I think he's one of those guys that, barring an injury, between now and the final cuts, you almost don't want to get a whole lot of snaps in the preseason so you can slip them onto the practice squad. Came over there, What do you need to see out of Brian Thomas Junior. What would be an ideal first preseason game for the first round pick. I want them to just I want to I want to see that he knows where he's supposed to be and that there's a
little bit of chemistry starting to build with Trevor. The one thing I think with a young player that's still learning, a lot of times, it's hard to play fast, and one of the greatest assets that Brian has is that he's fast. It's hard to play fast when you're thinking. And I think the more that he learns, the speed that he has and the speed that he showed at LSU will become more prevalent, more visible. But in the first preseason again, I want to see him, Yep, Number one,
stay healthy. Number two, get a couple of balls, you know, one to let him gain some confidence, to let him kind of move past that hurt. Okay, you know, all right, now I've maybe a couple of catches in the National Football League. Okay, now let's just get to work instead of you know, if he doesn't get a couple of balls, he still had that anxiety of maybe getting that first one or the first couple. So I just want to see him get a couple of balls and look good
and stay healthy. It's felt to me the last week or so we've seen more of him making catches in training camp practice. Yes, the first week was a little quiet. Well. He talked about how he's getting more comfortable. The way to get more comfortable is just throw the ball to him. I think they I think they press him a little bit and I think you got to see him play. The one thing I will say about him, and one of the biggest adjustments in the National Football League for
wide receivers is is the detail of route running. It's and a lot of people don't think about this because people think of wide receivers where they get the ball thrown to them, they catch it, and then they just run down the fields. There's an intricate, intricate amount of details to route running which enables the windows to be bigger.
I think that's something that's going to take some time to develop with him because in college a lot of times these guys that can just fly like Brian, they fly, okay, it's not the intricate details. Like Gabe Davis is a crafty right, I was talking about him earlier, So I think it will take a little bit of time. But he's a smart guy. He's hard working, he's been there
every day. I like his work ethic. But I can't wait to see him go route, take off with maybe a little utter go or something like that, because he can fly. I mean he can he can roll roll roll. Watching him at LSU, that's all you had to do there. Well, who's the other guy? Who's the other guy that was there with him that got drafted higher than him. We've had a couple of waves of guys come through there.
There's been like it been wide receiver you it seems like but the guy that he was with his past year got drafted ahead of him, and I might have taken Brian over him. Was Washing, Yeah, he was at Washington. It's the other one anyway. P r I Productions, the official event production company of the Jags, has everything you need to bring your next idea to life. By the way,
Trayvon's getting a lot better watching him in practice. How so he's he's really doing a good job of working the edges of the of the offensive tackles and offensive line because there the rub against him was that he was running between the numbers of the tackle and not having any moves. He was just a bullrush trying to be a power bull rush guy. But and you know, and he's strong enough that he can do that at times. But look, everybody's stronger when you have a guy off balance.
You know Reggie White, which his name came up with Doug Peterson today. We'll talk to him about that at some point. But Reggie was one of the strongest guys to ever play in the National Football League. But his legendary hump that he had was so damaging because he always had them running an off balance and then the power that he showed was because he had them off balance. It wasn't that they were expecting to get humped and
that they could stop it. Like Larry Allen was like, you know what, I've got him stopped and then got thrown in the air like he was off balance, off got thrown. So the great players, strong players like Trayvon, find a way to keep the offensive lineman off balance so that when they go to the strength, the strength is really good, really good. And part of his problem has been as a young player sometimes you got to learn that because in college you can overpower guys at
this level. That doesn't work all the time, if hardly at all. And so he's doing a really good job of staying on the edges of guys in camp, and you can really see that he is staying at tent of to that because in the one on one pass rush period, he's trying different things to stay on the edge, and I love it. Instead of reverting back to I'm going to overpower this guy and go down the middle on him again, He's continuing to work it and that's
what I love about him. Trayvon has got great work ethic. I mean, this team has two guys and Josh and Trayvon, that have an incredible work ethic. And it's awesome to have two guys that because it's going to be a naturally competitive situation between the two of it, two of them,
and it's going to make both of them better. The conversation you're referencing, Doug Peterson this week was asked about on The Rich Eisen Show, which player does Josh heines Allen remind you of when it comes to work ethic, and Doug Peterson mentioned Reggie White, which is an amazing compliment. We've been saying for a number of years about how good of a guy that Josh heines Allen is in the locker room. But also, I mean just one of the highest quality guys. You could ever have a foundational
building block character guy for this organization. And that's it's high praise because you know, Reggie White was one of the great all time leaders in the history of the National Football League. I'm talking big time. Like if you surveyed some of the Hall of Fame players and said, give me a top ten all time leadership list, I think Reggie White's on that list. And Doug is talking about Josh Heines Allen in the same breath as Reggie White.
I mean, that's incredibly high praise, incredibly high praise. And here's the thing, you know what, I love it. It's a great learning lesson I think for team building and that let's go back to the beginning point of Josh's career in the National Football League. He comes here and he's got who kalais Campbell correct as a mentor? Yes, it just to me. It goes to show you the importance of having those foundational building block, high character guys to raise that next generation so that they can be
that for the generation after them. And so it's important that you have one of those guys, I think in every position group, so to speak. And the more you can have. If you can have two awesome, great, but I think it's hard and it makes it very difficult if you have a young room as a whole and
you don't have any of the veteran leadership. If that's the case, then I think you have to have a very strong coach as far as leadership goes, because he has to provide that for that position group if they don't have one of those type of players like Claus or what Josh is now or what Reggie White was back in the day. So my question is what did the Jaguars have after those two at the pass rushing edge position. The first guy, I think, the next guy up right now is Trevis Gibson, who they signed in free agency from the Tennessee Titan. Has been a little bit of a journeyman. I think he's got he's got a really good motor, really good motor. He's got some pass rush ability. If you look at all of the guys that have been I think pass rushing in one on one is the win rate. He's
probably right there behind Josh and Trayvon. Who's next after that? I think there's there's an interesting question. Remember they drafted your Sir Abdullah for a true kind of three four outside linebacker. Yeah, and he's he's kind of cross training, so he's playing the sam linebacker position it seemed like. And then he's also doing some pass rush, so he could be a guy that could have kind of a dual role. He's got he's still you know, going against
some of those higher tackles. When I say higher tackles, if he goes up against seventy two or seventy four, which you know, you walk a little Cam Robinson, Anton Harrison. You know, he's not having the success rate that you know Josh or Tremon is having or even Trevis. So he's I think he's still a ways away now. Sean Dixon was a guy who, by the way, had an ACL injury and is going to be lost for the season.
Was waved injured. If nobody claims him, he's going to revert to IR, which is that nobody's gonna claim him. And he was kind of competing for that role. And so now with his injury, now you have a position to fill on your roster that you would like to find somebody that can maybe compete for that role. The Jaguars ended up signing a guy that was the UFL Defensive Player of the Year, Breally Speaks, who is a
second round pick of the Chiefs. I think back in eighteen correct didn't really have a great career watch I remember watching him when he was with kan City and very unimpressive. Ended up having substance abuse issues, was suspended by the league four games I think in nineteen and then bounced around to about four or five different teams, but never played another game after that point and has
been out of the league since so. But I mean, if he's a second round pick of the Chiefs or any team for that matter, there's some talent there, shouldn't he And there's some traits there. Here's the question with the substance abuse issues obviously probably impeded some of the performance that they expected out of him in Kan City. Is he over that? Has he matured? You know, you'd like to think, Okay, here's a guy that's matured. He had nine and a half sacks at the UFL level.
Is it the same type of tackles you're rushing against in the NFL. No, but good pass rushes are hard to find. And if he can give you a boost and he's not going to be, you know, an issue in the locker room, then you know, give him a chance. You know, there's nothing wrong with giving guys second chances as long as you have the intel that tells you that they are not. I was going to use a bad word, a detriment to the locker room. There you go, that's a better word. I think I knew where you
were going. That was dog poop and the D Yeah, yeah, fine, you could have said it. It's not a bad that's not a bad word. I don't think so, turd. You just said it, all right, you you said I could do it, save it. So if I get in trouble, it's your fault. Hey, it's yours whatever, man, So I get it. So my final question about this for you, this past rush situation. Are you comfortable with the depth of it? Or is there still work to be done? Well, I want to see our garb Stead back, right. I mean,
he hasn't touched the field. I don't know when he will. You know, the one of the big free agent signings that they got from the San Francisco forty nine ers. He's you know, he's six foot six, two hundred and ninety pounds, he's a he's a gigantic presence in the middle. He's going to be an interior pass rusher. You So, I want to see him out there, and we may not see him at all in the preseason, but at
some point he's got to start practicing. And uh but okay, let's say he's fine and he's the same Eric Armstead that we've seen in the past for the forty nine ers, and he's playing well, who, Well, there's got to be another guy. Well, Devon Hamilton seems to be showing some signs that he's getting back as a pass rusher. Yeah. Well, most accounts, he's been playing really well in practice. Yeah, there's some things though that he's still got a show. Look you gotta he still got a ways to go yet.
In my opinion, I think he's shown some really good things. I'm not negative on it at all. I just think that they're still little ways to go for him. Mason Smith unblockable, really unblockable, the Jaguar second round pick out of LSU. I use the word p the P word with him when after the draft I said he's a guy who's got potential. Sometimes that word is terrible because it means that it wasn't necessarily the other P word, which is productive. There's a lot of P words. Those
are two of them. The uh, but unblockable is quite a statement. I'm just telling you. He's a rookie, just telling and he's unblockable on the first knocking on wood. Let me give myself a speeding pass or speeding ticket. Slow down a little bit. He has been unblockable at times in one on one pass rushka. He's long, they can't get their arms on him. He's got an outstanding swim move, he's got power, he plays the game with lean hmm. I mean, I'm trying not to sound and
I'm trying not to get too excited. No you're not. You think you're overflowing with excitement saying it's uneka. He has been an absolute joy to watch, joy to watch two weeks of practice. Let's go see it in some games. That's what I'm saying. I'm giving myself a speeding ticket here. You are rowing down. It's like you're going down three to one headed towards Gainesville. Coming of Chris Jones, I'm just saying that he has looked really good, really good.
And he works hard too. He works really hard. And and by the way, yeah, he had the aco at L s U in ear and then last year he was coming back and he was gimpy a little bit for the season. Watching him on film, I don't see any gippiness out of him right now. And he played inside last year. He was outside two years ago. And that's he have a change. He's and he's gonna be
an interior pass rusher. You put him on some of these guards that are six foot two and a half six foot three and he's six foot six, six foot seven, whatever he is, and got arms that are probably forty inch for leave length. Good luck blocking him. We're back in a moment injury report, our final thoughts, and then at five o'clock it's the Doug Peterson Show. This is
Jaguars Happy Hour. We're back Jaguars Happy Hour from the Hyundai Studios at the Miller Electric Center on Tenson XL ninety two point five FM, Jaguars dot Com, Jaguars YouTube JP Shadwick with Jeff Logman. Preseason week one, of course, Chiefs coming up game sponsored by Ticketmaster. Excited for that because yeah, it's gonna be great. Let's get logs microphone out. What do you think the chances of Patrick Mahomes, Travis Kelcey, and Chris Jones all played? If he said starters, maybe I mean playing what a drive. I don't know if I put Chris Jones out there, I don't know if I put Kelsey out there either. To think of it, I wouldn't either. I mean, I'd
bubble wrap those guys. But that's just me. But Andy Reeve's had a different philosophy. The quarterback, you can always kind of game plan to protect. Yeah, get it out of here, yeah, hand the ball off a couple of times, you know, three step balls out of his hands quick so he doesn't get touched. Okay, Well, tight end defensive tackles a little different. You know, it gets a little bit loud where they're at sometimes. Yeah, and you know that those three are those are three guys that are
the best at theirsition in the National Football League. Remember trying to block Jones here last year? Poor Anton kidding me. Not a great job by the Jacks coaches doing justin that. I mean, come on, but those Would you agree that those three guys are the best at their position in the National Football League at quarterback, defensive tackle, and tight end, Well, I mean yeah, yeah. Could you make an argument that they're not? You could make an argument for like Kittle
at tight end? Okay, from a from a past catching tight end standpoint. But you could make that better with you. Here's another guy that I would put up in there is the best at his position right now. Because of the retirement of Travis Kelcey. I'd put the center Creed Humphrey up there. Of his brother Kelsey, Jason, Jason Kelsey, thank you breaking news, Travis, But I would put Creed Humphrey right up there at the top arguably is the best center in the National Football Okay, well, Devon Hamilton
nose tackle up against it. It's a great it's a great test, great test. Let's go the guard to his left, Joe Tooney. I would put him in the top five guards left guard certainly in the National Football League. I mean, they've got some really really good players on this football team, which is what you want to have is a measuring stick to kind of compare your players too. I got
to protect that asset back there in the quarterback. That's how fifteen is something else now And by the way, for people that don't know, will be a little bit of a reunion of sorts. Carson Wentz, the backup quarterback of the Kansas City Chiefs. About that, Doug Peterson and Carson Wentz kind of also, by the way, just kind of along those lines, Nick Foles announced his retirement. It's
a lot of like kind of news around all though. Yeah, so that's kind of the you know, going back to the Eagle Super Bowl win when Doug was a coach, he was there. They have a statue in fact, he and Nick Foles together. Cool outside of the stadium. Is that where Rocky statue is at. Not at the art museum, It's at the stadium. That's that's the statue. The Liberty bells pretty good too, but that counts. I think that qualified.
That's the top, by the way, every one time for the injury report presented by Baptist Health, changing healthcare for good well. Doug Peterson today discussed some players who will not be available for Saturday's game. Ezra Cleveland with a heel issue. The left guard will not play. Seems to be trending the right way, just really more of a precaution not put him out there. He's done some individual drills lately, so that's good. Anton Harrison, right tackle, coming
off the concussion protocol. They'll hold him out as a precaution. On seventhy haven't seen him. He was around today, he had like an arm jersey on was walking around first time, so that's good. Just step in the right direction to get him back on the field. It's part of the protocol to have him at least out although he's been really good in camp. Yeah, and and and and just real quick on him. What he played with last year, which was a significant shoulder injury. And Tom Harris tough
as nails. Tough as nails, love him, love him for what he was able to do last year. Love him. So expect Walker Little to get some time at right tackle and Blake Hants probably will be the left guard on Saturday Night. Probably. He's had a like an elbow thing on recently the last few days which he didn't have on early on, and he's he's been having a good camp as well. Another player who will not go on Saturday running back Keillan Robinson tow issue. We have
not seen him in pads yet. And for a rookie who's looking for a spot, especially a kick returner kind of special teams, which is jp availability. You can't make the club in the tub, correct, So he will not play. Stephen Jones offensive lineman with a calf issue will not play. Rookie defensive tackle Jordan Jefferson from LSU with an ankle
issue will be held out. Andrew Wingard, Well, just real quick, just before you go to Winger, Jordan Jefferson, you there's an example that you might be able to make the club in the tub. Oh he's gonna make it. Okay, pretty good. But just with Kevin Robinson, you know, fifth round pick, and you know they got running backs. Yes, yeah, Andrew Winger has been out for a little bit with a knee issue. No word on how long that could go. All the word the words were from Doug. It's gonna
be a while. It's not a good sign. Right. That means Andre Cisco has taken over. You know he was starting safety anyway. But remember Wingard was very involved on special teams. Personal protector on punt PP. Andre Sisko is doing that. Is that p word again? The double there is another there's personal protector. But with Winger also, let's not forget some of the flexibility that they had last year with him in the nickel and dime packages. So I mean it hurts definitely not having him out there.
But the emergence and again I've been tooting his horn since last year. Antonio Johnson is a really good football player, really good football player. Darnold Savage will not play shoulder issue, and as you mentioned before, Eric Armstead still on physically unable to perform, so with a knee issue is out. Shaun Dixon acl going through the waiver process now, and Patrick Murtag still on the roster with that ankle fracture. So international players. Fortunately, by the way, the Chiefs have
two international players. Don't remember exactly, but I was putting the roster of the game board together and I saw that they had two. Doug Peterson show is coming up next five o'clock, No coaching studio. We're gonna have the best of his press conference today. There was a lot to come out of that press conferences. It was about a fifteen minute press conference. Yeah, and so a lot of news to come out of that. And we'll hear from Jaguars rookie defensive tackle Mason Smith. I caught up
with him earlier this week. You'll get to hear from your favorite new Jaguar. I love him. I love him, And there's real quick just a little bit of a I guess to curb the enthusiasm a little bit because I got them. Okay, unblockable in one on ones. Ah Okay, And when you play defensive tackle and you pass rush as a defensive tackle, your head's in your bet. No, I'm just saying, I hear the beeping. You don't get those one on one opportunities all the time, but they
do happen. You're backing off that hot Tay has been unblockable in one on one. We'll return with Jaguars Radio Network coverage of the Doug Peterson Show. Thanks to Joe Fortunado, Brent Reeber, our entire crew for Jeff Flagman. I'm j P. Shadwick and thanks for listening to Jaguars Happy Hour.
