A plié is a fundamental movement in ballet that involves bending the knees while keeping the feet flat on the floor. The French term "plié" translates to "bent" or "bending". The movement is used to create graceful transitions between steps, allowing dancers to move in and out of postures with ease. There are several types of pliés, including the demi-plié and the grand plié:

  • Demi-plié: A small or half bend of the knees, keeping the heels of the feet flat on the floor
  • Grand-plié: A full or large bend of the knees

The knees should be bent until the thighs are horizontal. The heels always rise off the ground, except when a dancer is in second position, and are lowered again as the knee straightens.
