Episode description

The origin of diet culture is shady and creepy… and likely not what you think it is. Tunes to this week’s podcast where I share with you how diet culture was born.

Surprisingly, the cultural belief system about women managing their size only goes back about a hundred years or so and came out of a social narrative that had nothing to do with health or medicine.

The conversation about your weight which may feel like a scientific dictum inside of a doctor’s visit actually has very little to do with health and a heck of a lot more to do with social oppression.

This podcast episode of our podcast is actually an extract from an interview I did on a colleague’s podcast The Eat Influencer Podcast by Maggie Landes MD. We are going to explore the origins of diet culture and the somewhat sinister beginnings of the modern weight loss industry.

What you’ll learn listening to this episode:
  • The origin of diet culture
  • When and how the weight loss industry was born
  • The historical link between feminism and diet culture
