Saturday. Welcome to another edition of Invite Health Radio. My name is Jerry Hickyam a nutritional pharmassistant. It's always an honor and a privilege to be speaking with you on these Saturday morning programs. It's all about health. It's all about doing well, having energy, helping your memory, helping your strength. Today's program really is going to focus on the brain and on muscle and on pain. It's important to talk about muscle because we lose muscle as we age.
So first I'm going to talk about a multi vitamin. We have a multi vitamin on special today called the Invite Memory Invite Memory multi Vitamin. There's a lot of good stuff in there for your brain. So there's a fairly new study who came out several months ago to Cosmo's study, and it showed that if you took a multi vitamin daily, especially in older people, and improves your memory performance by over three years, By over three years. general, some people will be better. But here's the thing in all of us, its slowed memory decline, its slowed cognitive decline. Now, this was performed by really good academic research institutions. It was a wake Forest School of Medicine and Brigman Women's Hospital up in Boston, which of course works with Harvard. So in the Cosmos study, giving a multi improved episode zodic memory.
That's really good. Improved overall cognition. Your brain just worked better and faster, and it improved your executive function, you know, being aware of things, focusing, paying attention, the attention span, all these things, getting your work done on time. It was twenty two hundred older people, so it meant something. There's a lot of people and they we call that a well powered study because it was also a good amount of time. Now
there's another new study from the UK and Australia. Taking a multi videman with mineral supplement increased your energy, especially in those who are sick or suffer from chronic fatigue. It's a review of sixty studies. It's in the journal Nutrients, April thirtieth, twenty twenty three. So these are very recent studies. But it also improved mental energy, muscle endurance, physical fatigue, physical performance. So a multi vitamin is really, really, really super important in older
people. It's been shown to reduce our heart attack risk dramatically. It's been shown to maintain our brain health, our vision health, even reduced the risk of cancers. So literally, if you look at the data, simply taking a high quality multi vitamin every day reduces the risk of cancer and hundreds of thousands of Americans each year. So that's good news. So we have a memory multi So let's talk about a multi vitamin and the brain. Our brain
uses twenty percent of our bodies energy expenditure. So our brain is only about two percent of our body dry weight. If you remove all the moisture, our brain is two percent of our body weight. But it uses twenty percent of the energy from our food. It's super high a super high energy organ Now you know you have a number of high energy organs your heart, your
eyes, your brain, your skin. So bee complex vitamins play an integral part, a very powerful part, an incredibly powerful key part, and supplementing your brain with energy and keeping your brain working. But you need to correct form of these bee vitamins. We'll go into that in a minute. Your brain soaks up bee vitamins. It has these mechanisms that grab the bee vitamins from your food, and even the best diet has been proven not to supply
sufficient levels of all of the bee vitamins. You're always short a little bit, which is not dangerous, but at lower's brain function, your brain can
function a little bit better. They did a study in England, oh about four years ago, very highly motivated people who worked out, they were in good shape, they ate good diets a lot, and were professionals like accountants and medical doctors and lawyers, etc. So these people were leading a good life and they found out giving them be vitamins actually improved their brain function better than diet, only because you couldn't get sufficient levels of every bee vitamin even
from a well balanced diet, even from a very good diet. Now let me just take a little dog leg here go in a slightly different direction. B vitamins also protect your immune system and to a degree, your heart and your brain from the pollution we're breathing in every day, every day. The air quality has not been great in New York because of these fires burning in Canada. So my friend had a house upstate. He said his air was
terrible. My mother in Mannheim at Pennsylvania and their Lancaster Heart air has been terrible. And you see right down the coast the air quality is not what it should be. B vitamins will also protect your immune system and your heart and your brain from the pollution and the smoke. This has been proven in human clinical dwals and it reduces the inflammation of smoke causes. But let's get back to the brain. So let's talk about concentrations of bee vitamins. How
important now to the brain because they're super high concentrations in the brain. The brain grabs your B vitamins and your vitamin C and vitamin E from your food and shoves it into the brain. It's really important. The amount of folate, this is really important. Folate is sometimes called vitamin B nine B nine, the number nine because it sounds like the word B nine, but it's B nine. And folate is called folate because it's ubiquitous in foliage. It's
in plants, but it's very hard to get out of plants. It's stuck into plant fibers and the plant fach it's very hard to get the folate out. So you can't really depend on a salad to get enough folate. You can't do it. So the type of folate used and most multi vitamins is folic acid, folic acid vitamin B nine. So what's the problem with that. Well, first of all, not all, but most of the folic acid is made in this crappy, beaten up, broken down factory in China
that really should be redone. It really should be redone or closed down. So most of the folicac you get your multi vitamins when you go into these big stores and you get your multi vitamin for six dollars, they're using this crap folic acid they get from China. I think against China. I would love to go to China. I've never been to China. I would love to go to China, but I don't want to use their vitamins. They don't do a good job with their vitamins. They don't do a good job
with their supplements period. And the story, so the folic acid. Also a lot of you can't use it. You can't correctly convert it into the active form. So why is this important. Well, in our multi vitamin and our memory multi we have methyl tetrahydrofolate, the form of folate that the brain and the heart use. So why is that important. Well, first of all, the amount of folate in your brain is four hundred percent higher than the amount in your blood, showing how important folate is for the brain.
So what does it do in a brain. Well, for one thing, it lowers the risk of cancer. It lowers the risk of brain cancer and other cancers. It helps prevent your genes from getting mutated that can start the cancer process. The second thing is folate reduces a chemical in the brain called homocystein. We make homocystein, and some of us make more than others. And when homocystein is in the brain, it prevents it from working properly
and you could get anxious or depressed. But also homocystein in the brain damages to back of your eye and increases the risk of age associated blindness wet maculated generation. But more importantly and more commonly, elevated homocystein in the brain is like a solvent like an acid in the brain, and it kills brain cells and it strongly increases your risk of Alzheimer's. So elevated homocystein, something the body makes when it gets high in the brain, kills brain cells, damages
the functions of the brain. It just comes up the brain where its it just doesn't work effectively, and it really increases your risk of developing Alzheimer's disease. Methyl tetrahydrofoliate is the exact thing that lowers homocystein. So that's why we put methyl tetrahydrofoliate in there, because some of you are not making it. You're getting this multivitamin you're thinking doing a good job, but the folic acid and it is not accomplishing its job in your brain protecting the brain from from
Alzheimer's by reducing homocystein. I'm not saying this is the only cause of al timers. Of course it isn't, but it is a causal. Now also in the brain. Biotin is fifty times higher in our brain than in our blood, and we have plenty of biotin in our multi vitamin one hundred percent of the RDA Recommended daily allowance because biotin allows the brain to rebuild itself with branch chain amino acids. But biotin also allows the brain to use calories for
energy. Because the brain is super high energy, it needs to use calories. The brain has fifty times higher a B vitamin Vitamin B five pantothemic acid. Then you get in your bloodstream and you need B five to create neuro transmitters and to create energy out of your food. You can't create energy out of fats and sugar unless you have vitamin B five B two in the brain.
It allows the brain to use oxygen B one with B five and B three protects the cells of the brain, allows the brain of sugar and fats for energy, slows down brain aging, and it's really important for your memory. For instance, BE one activates the transketo lace pathway that allows the brain to use sugar and helps the brain from breaking down so that you have ongoing good memory. And then you need a whole bunch of bee vitamins to make
nerd transmitters. Nerd transmitters like dopamine help you enjoy life and help you stay safe. Say with serotonin, melatonin allows you to sleep cortas all wakes you up. A combination of GABBA and glutamic acid and glutamate and acetylcholine allows you to learn and allows you to remember. You need bee vitamins to make all of these things. You cannot make these things in your brain without be vitamins. But along with that, in the memory multi lutine which shields the brain,

You need toka trianols to shield your brain. The research really proves it, so Higher State University their Center for Aging Research, it really shows it. The Wagner Center over there, there's
cocuten for brain energy, there's city coaling. City colling gets into the brain very effectively. You're not getting this in your multi vitamin and allows the brain to create memory so that you can remember things, so that you can remember what you had for breakfast this morning and that you were supposed to meet a friend at one o'clock today for lunch. prone to falling. That's one reason why they get sicker than other people, and they don't recover as quickly because muscle is a reservoir for healing, etc. But HMB improves muscle synthesis, it gets bigger, but it also improves your muscle strength. So it's not all about how you look at a T shirt and a pair of shorts. It makes you stronger. That's why every time I lift weights, where I ride my bike, I'm taking active HX Right after it, the muscles open up and it's easier to get the active

It's Iowa State University and De Moine University over in Iowa, and it's all adults over the age of sixty. It's a year long study. It's a double blinding place ship of controlled today of the art study. So they were assigned to nothing or to exercise, and with nothing they got HMB, they got active HX plus
vitamin D, or with exercise they got vitamin D and active HX. So they either exercised or they didn't exercise. So it's four groups. Some of the people who didn't exercise were supplemented with active HX and vitamin D. Some of the people who exercise was supplemented with active X and vitamin D. They looked at their strength, they looked at their physical function, they looked at
their body composition. Now even in people who did not exercise, alder people without exercise, giving them the ingredient in active HX, because that's what was used in this study, the ingredient in active HX, it's the actual ingredient used in this human clinical trial. With vitamin D at six months, significantly improved the amount of muscle they had, significantly improved their muscle strength, and
they lost fat. They gained muscle even sitting on the couch. If they gave them active HX and vitamin D, they gain muscle, they gain strength, they lost fat. Even their physical performance improved and their physical function improved. Physical funcal like walking upstairs and stuff opening up a jorapasta. I love when my wife hand me like a bar of really good pasta sauce and you can't open the jar, and I just go and I pop it right off and she goes, ah, that's my guy. I'm still her guy.
But I exercise. So here's the journal Nutrients, a very recent study. It's a systemic review of meta analysis. So it's a whole bunch of studies, both exercise and active HX, which is on special today in older people helps prevent frailty. Now that's really important. Frailty is a killer. Frailty is when you're shrinking, you're losing strength, you're getting you're just sitting there all day looking at the fish tank. You're just sitting all day, all
day looking at the staring at the TV set. Because that's when you're more likely to break your spine or break your hip, or die for pneumonia or get really sick for the flu. What about Alzheimer's when you become frail.
So they found in this really big review as studies that both active X and older people or exercise or both together prevented them from becoming frail, and tenor to randomize trials adding active HX to exercise and people over the age of fifty helped to improve their muscle strength even if they already exercised, even if they were already in shape. And people over the age of fifty adding active HX to exercise improve their muscle strength. Now this is a very important effect.
And people over the age of fifty because they're losing strength, they're losing muscle. So let's take it a step further. What about sick people. This is the University of Melbourne as the Journal of Nutrition, Health and Aging. It's the Australian Institute for Muscular Skeletal Science. Active X is effective in older adults who are losing muscle, to stop additional muscle loss, to stop additional
muscle loss, and to support muscle strength and muscle function. So they put together three studies of people over the age of sixty even and people with frailty or those with a lot of muscle loss. Giving them active X improved their muscle strength, increased their physical function, improved their muscleness. This is really important. Now here's sick people. Okay, these are older people who had hip surgery because they suffered with a broken hip Okay, it's three studies.
It's an a journal Nutrition in Clinical Practice, April twenty twenty three, so it's a couple of months ago. It's a couple of months ago. It's Rutgers University School of Health Professionals, So Rutgers University over here in New Jersey. In older adults who underwent hip surgery for a broken hip, in three different studies, active HX had the most benefit out of all supplements to improve their functional status and to protect their strength and muscle size in older people hospitalized
for a broken hip. So here's the thing. When you're older and you wind up in a hospital within two weeks, you lose a lot of extra muscle and extra strength and you're not getting it back. You're not getting it back. So these are people who broke a hip. They're in a hospital. Then they're going to be in some form of recovery program rehab. So they're in a hospital and they're going to be in rehab that hospitals stay. You lose muscle and strength. They gave them active HX and they didn't lose
so and strength. So their recuperation is going to be greatly speeded up and greatly helped and greatly boosted, because the reason you go to the rehab is because you've lost the strength. You'll lost the muscle, you'll lost the function, whereas the act of HX was preserving it. So when they go into rehab, they're going to be a lot more successful at getting out of rehab to help them stay out of a nursing home to an assistant living home.

health. They've been through a lot with World War two and the Korean War, Vietnam War, World War One, some of them, and all these different things, and they lived a happy but short life. They smoked, they didn't care what they ate, you know, they ate whatever they thought. We didn't know about cholesterol, We didn't know about all these things. Back then, a lot of people died at fifty five, especially ment heart attacks. Okay, but now so many of us are reaching eighty and eighty
five. It's kind of like, if you reach sixty five, you're probably gonna make seventy or seventy five. If you make seventy five, you're probably gonna make eighty or eighty five. If you make eighty five in good shape, you're probably going to make ninety five. It's kind of like that, you know, depends the shape you're at at those timelines. But because we're
living longer, we really have to pay attention to our brain. And they only discovered about ten years ago that you actually rejuvenate and hatch, literally give birth to new brain cells every night. Memory cells, the part of the
brain involved with memory, is very healable. So they found that when you go to sleep at night, you release these growth factors like nerve growth factor and brain derived nor trophic factor, and they're not just active in the brain, they're also active in the heart, the circulatory system, but they're very important in the brain because they allayed to create hundreds and hundreds of new memory cells. The problem is as we grow older, we're releasing less and less
of these growth factors, so we're not making as many memory cells. So eventually, you know, our cheese starts to slide off, it's cracked or a little bit, did I say cracker?
