It's a wonderful time of year. Hi, this is Jerry Hickey. I'm a nutritional pharmacist, licensed pharmacist. I do a lot of intellectual stuff with Invite Health. a dangerous level because they had mild cognitive impairment mouth cognitive impairment. And if it's true milcognitive impairment, it leads into Alzheimer's disease. There's already damage in there. So and the people with mild cognitive impairment, it was restoring memory functions. It was slowing down cognitive decline. That's a really important statement because that's very difficult to achieve and it's only three a day with a meal.

The second group of people in the study were people with memory loss, just you know, regular memory loss where people are having trouble remembering dates or what they needed in the store. You know, they got forgot, forgetful. They didn't think they parked in a parking lot for a supermarket, and they didn't. They weren't sharp enough and attentive enough to remember where they parked their car. So it's for that kind of memory loss, which is normal.

That's very normal. Don't be afraid of that. It happens. Has it happened to me? I don't know. I don't see it, but maybe it has. So and the people with regular age related memory life, because that's what most of us get. Most of us do not get Alzheimer's or vascular dementia or situations like this. Most of us just get a little bit of memory loss, which we're not happy with. But it happens. It

brought it back, It brought back their memory. They were much sharper, they were more focused, they were more on the ball, their brain worked quicker, they could pay attention longer. But just day to day memory improved, like your working memory, you know, your short term memory, which is the first part to go. Really, the short term memory was just functioning. It was just better. And this was compared to people in the same study who were taking placebo, which is like an inactive substance. So

You know, I'm an older person, but I'm very strong. I ride my bike, I lift weights. You know, my wife and I walk probably

four miles a day. We kayak, I mean, we do all these things. We play pickleball. So I'm a very strong guy. I have no problem being active all day long, even though I like to sit and paint and I like to sit and read because I like that intellectual stuff. We're very active. But all the people in an assisted living home, they can't really be active because, you know, maybe they had a stroke, maybe they broke their hip, maybe they have some Alzheimer's, you know,

there's something wrong they can't get. Maybe they had a there are heart attacks. Maybe they have severe diabetes and they broke their bone because the diabetes hollows at your bones, and you know, they just have problems, right, So they're an assisted living where people cook for them and help clean for them and all this stuff maybe perhaps helps them bathe if they need that in any event. So people in assisted living homes there's two things going on. Their

immune system is weakened. It just is. They are on a lot of drugs, they're not getting exercise, they're not getting a lot of fresh air, and they're on top of each other. So when the flu hits an assisted living home, it spreads throughout the flu like it does in the dorms in the college campus. You know, when dorms get sick, the whole dorm gets there. It's like a cruise ship. Somebody gets the flow in a cruise ship, it goes around the cruise ship. Right. You can't

help it. You're on top of each other. So in these assistant living homes, even though they get the flu shot, the flu shot doesn't take well because their immune system doesn't respond to it and they're not making enough antibodies, so they still get sick. So they tried something. They gave them green tea, and green tea strongly lowered their risk of getting the flu, even for those who already had a flu shot. The people in the assistant

Lemingholm who got the flu shots, they were still getting the flu. So they did a study in the United States that was in the United States, by the way, and by the way, the green tea also helped protect older people from pneumonia. So that's pretty cool, right. So the green tea will lower your risk of getting the flu, and even if you still get the flu, it'll weaken the flu because it weakens the flu on contact that the flu uses enzymes like chemo gluten and to get into yourselves and propagate

and move around and infect you. The green tea weakens three of these enzymes that are key to the flu infecting you. Same with covid. By the way, the coronaviruses use enzymes to infect you, and green tea weakens those viruses too by weakening the enzymes that they use to infect you. Now a little bit with the common cold. It helps a little bit with the common cold, but mostly the flu and coronaviruses. Now, the other thing about green tea, it has an impact on keeping you strong as we grow older.

The map kinase pathways. These are biologically active ceilo pathways in your muscle cells. They help you heal and build muscle. So you know, older people, if we like get stuck in bed, we lose muscle, right, we lose muscle and we don't get it back because these healing pathways are gone in our muscles. Green tea brings back the healing pathways and our muscles to map kinse pathways so you can regain your strength. So if you do

green tea before you exercise, you'll get more strength. You know I'm strong. I am. I'm definitely strong, and I'm definitely stronger in a lot of my age. And I'm not boasting. I'm just telling you the way it is. But I've lifted weights for a long time, and you know, I do all kinds of exercises. But that's not what I'm getting at. What I'm getting at is, even though I'm strong for my age, I'm not as strong as I used to be. I notice things that used

to be really light, like the pro Pain tank for a barbecue. Right. I used to pick up Pro Paine tanks like they were a feather. Now I pick up the pro Pain tank. I could easily pick it up, but I feel it now. I'm not as strong as I used to be. I'm seventy years old. That's a natural process, but you don't want to get it too far. Otherwise you become frail, and then you're at risk of falling and breaking your hip or getting all kinds of diseases and

becoming isolated and inactive. You don't want that. So the green tea has been shown to help you restore your muscle. It's one of those things that helps restore your muscle and it helps prevent frailty. Have you ever heard of a blue zone? A blue zone is where people live longer. So like, there's a blue zone in Loma Lindon, California, where people are commonly make it into their nineties and even one hundred more so than people in surrounding

regions. There's a blue zone zone and I don't know if I'm saying it correctly. I Korea, Ikaria or Ikorea Greece. It's an island. They live longer than other people on other islands. There's a blue zone above Venice, Italy, where people live a long time. There's a blue zone in Okinawa, Japan. Many of these blue zones key to their health is drinking green tea and they're find there's a couple of studies in Japan and a couple of studies in the ibo Jima I'm in Okinawa, where the people who drink

green tea live longer than the other people. It's part of living longer. There was also the sensational study in Japan of nutritionists dietitians, and the dietitians had grandmas, so it's a couple of thousand grandmas, and they found out certain things kept these grandmas strong. Now we're not talking about sleep that's always good, and we're not talking about exercise that's always good. We're talking about

food here. They found fruit didn't really affect staying strong. Fruit did other things, like fruit was good for the brain and the heart, but it didn't keep you strong. It didn't prevent you from becoming frail. Vegetables did. But the vegetables that they eat in Japan are different than the vegetables we eat in the United States. So the vegetables and Japan kept people strong. And after that was green tea. Green tea prevented Japanese grandmas. Now these

are people that the dietitian granddaughters and grandsons were watching closely. Okay, the ones who drank the green tea stayed strong In China, they found that women who drank green tea and ate mushrooms much lower risk of colon cancer and breast cancer. Green tea is one of those things that lowers the risk of colon cancer. In fact, there was a study in America where green tea prevented people from developing polyps. People who developed colon pops, they commonly developed colon

polyps. And they found out that the people who drank green tea, they weren't getting colon polyps. I mean it's a colon pop that creates colon cancer. Typically one other study on fragility, No, I'm sorry, let's do one instead on the immune system, because tis the season for viruses, right, Nobody wants a virus around New Years, at Christmas or wherever. Right once it gets sick, nobody wants to get sick. Are you kidding me?

So there was this study and healthcare workers in New York, and it was a couple of hundred healthcare workers giving them green tea prevented them from getting sick. Healthcare workers commonly get sick because sick people come to see them, or they're helping sick people, or they're taking care of little kids were sick and doing the green Tea prevented them from get strongly prevented them from getting sick strongly. Now, a number of colon a number of studies on colon cancer link fish oils to a reduced risk of colon cancer. And that's real. Fish oils have been somewhat shown to lower the risk of breast cancer, but there's even

more evidence for colon cancer because they reduce inflammation into colon. Don't forget your colon is open to the environment. You're swallowing things that have germs, that have pesticides and toxins and irritants, swallowing drugs that irritate the colon. Like I spoke to somebody yesterday and their mother developed an ulcer and she had to go to the hospital for a week because she was taking an arthritis drug. She was taking the arthritis drug for her back ache, you know, like

an advil, a leave type thing. So she wound up put a terrible bleeding ulcer and a russia to the hospital. And that's it. So a lot of things irritate the colon. Fish wels reduce inflammation in the colon and heal the colon. You're colon lining the immune cells. You have a lot of your immune system seventy percent of your immune systems in the colon. So when you eat the wrong thing, like bad food, or you drink the

wrong thing like maybe not the wrong thing according to feeling happy. But like Scotch or something, it irritates the immune system in the intestines and it activates the cytokines, and these mutate the DNA of the colon cells, and that leads to the polyps and colon cancer. Okay, so at of fishels prevent that. So there was a study from a Vanderbilt Ingram University their cancer center, people who ate fish three times a week a thirty three percent reduced risk

of colon polyps. Now, I eat fish, but I also take krill. I don't normally eat fish three times a week, maybe once or twice. It's just the way it is. I mean. But when you eat the fish or you take krill oil or fish oil capsules, it lowers a prostagland and called PG two. That lowers the inflammation, and that helps prevent colon cancer. Okay, So if you want to lower your risk of colon cancer, the green tea is helpful. Fish oils or krill oil or eating

fish is helpful. But also berries. Berries have photochemicals that like anthocyanins and allagic acid and punic elegans. They'd give the berries the reds the blues, the purples, they slow the growth are pre malignant cells and you colon. They even inhibit block the growth of pre malignant cells. Pre malignant cells are cells that are likely to go into the cancer process. So the allergic acid from the berries normally, normally in a berry, allagic acid protects it from

insects and mold and stuff like that, and it repairs the berry. It does the same thing for us when you eat these berries, like I eat blueberries every night. That's my dessert every night. I love a big bowl of blueberries. I get organic blueberries, and I have them every night, literally, probably seven nights a week. The ellagic acid interacts with the good bacteria and our intestines and it repairs our cells to block the onset of colon

cancer. Because there's intestinal cancers in my family, so I'm very in tune with that. So I'm drinking the green tea. I brew green tea several times a day, and I add a couple of squirts and green tea to it. I know it protects me, my wife and me from the flu. I love my wife, she's a doll. She's a wonderful person. I know it protects us from the flu, but it's also helping protect her from from breast cancer. And it's helping protect me from colon cancer. So

where do you get this kind of magic ingredient. You get it in blueberries, raspberries, strawberries, blackberries, well guess what they were now red zahchecks. Not only that, but you get probiotics in there. The probiotics help prevent colon cancer. Probiotics strongly help prevent colon cancer. That's why I tell people, you know, eat some Kimchi eats, some Nato eat, some real Tempe, have some real sour crowd to get these different bacteria. But

Italy and Spain. It was researches in Italy and like rom etc. And researchers in Spain, really sharp people. They do a lot of food research. They found twenty three different berries that help protect you from colon cancer, including some of the weird ones that are in the red ZHX currants you know, the black currants, a Siberry, goji berry, and rose hips. They're all in

the red SA chex. So it is about eight or ten berries in the red SHX that help protect you from colon cancer. But there's also the probiotics that helped protect you from colon cancer. Now, another thing that helps protect you from colon cancer is garlic, and age garlic is better than regular garlic. I remember there was a study people who considme the most gallic in a

part of Italy a thirty percent reduction and the risk of colorectal cancer. I remember this is clearly people who consider the most gallic in this part of Italy a thirty percent reduction in colon cancer and rectal cancer. Okay, so we have age gallic that helps protected. And the other thing that helps protect is biocurcuman five loxin. The biocurcuman has about one hundred and fifty stituents including bis

methoxy curcuman and aromatic turmerone and curcumin. Everybody knows about curcumin. That's an anti inflammatory, that's an antioxidant, but it actually helps you target colon cancer cells. This is really powerful evidence on this. Okay, there's powerful evidence that the ingredients in the biocurcumin five loxin spare healthy cells in the colon but

target colon cancer cells. And it does this by modulating an enzyme in the colon called glutathions transferrase and phase two dettification that cleans out colon cancer cells and other toxins. I remember that was in the journal Frontiers and Microbiology. Oh, no, Frontiers in Oncology. I'm sorry, I'm doing this for memory. It was Frontias in Oncology, which is a very interesting journal, very interesting journal, but it's hard to read that. You have to really know

your stuff to understand the studies in there. So that study in looking at curcumin termeric biocurcuman, when they gave it to people, it spared healthy cells and it was taught people's tissue. It spared to healthy cells and it was targeting the pre cancerous cells. And causing glutithionus transfer RaSE this enzyme to kill the colon cancer cells. I mean, that's wow. So we should all be considerate of what's important for our family and our friends in the wall to

lower the risk of cancer. It's always a good thing. I always include when I cook for people. And I like to cook, and I make all these wonder full foods that are delicious, and I use a lot of herbs and spices I don't use. I'm not using butter, I'm not using sugar. I'm not using salt, although sometimes you have to add a little salt, right, like when you're making pasta, you gotta put a little salt in the water, right, But I'm using a whole grain pasta.

The thing is, I'm using all these different herbs and spices, and all these different colors are getting in there, and I'm using berries. I'm using all these crazy things. Food's delicious. People go crazy for the food I cook. I'm a very creative cook. I would never trained. I'd really like to go for courses in cooking because that'd be fun. But you know, I'm just having fun cooking. If you look in my spice cabinet,

I probably have thirty spices and I use them all the time. Okay, so I'm talking individual spices like galangal and zoomac and all these crazy things. You know. So if you Laura nervous, could colon cancer, you want to limit your alcohol intake. Listen. I know you want a little prosecco. I know you want a little champagne on the holiday and all, but

limit don't go crazy. You want to definitely quit smoking because that will kill you in fifty different ways, including dementia, heart attacks, strokes, and cancer and lung disease and kidney damage and everything. So you want to limit your alcohol intake. You want to quit smoking. You want to get exercise. You want to lose that extra fat on your belly. You want to get rid of that. welcome back to your Hicky. This is the last segment of the program. Now I spoke about the green tea. Green tea is fifty percent off today. I generally brew green tea twice a day during flu season and caught from cold season, and I put two squirts in each cup twice a day for my wife and me, and we actually kind of it's like a little ceremony. And even if you get the flu, it weekends the flu so it won't be as bad and it won't last as long according to human clinical trails. So let's talk about the immune system in this last segment, because tis the season. Nobody wants to be in bed for a week sick or worse. You know,

some people will be in danger. My mother is in her nineties. I'm going to be seventy two months. A month and a half, well, actually February eleventh, not that far away. My immune system works well. My mother's immune system works well. But I know I could still get sick. Will it be life threatening in me? Probably not. I'm just you know, probably not. But it can be life threatening in a lot of

people. I mean, the people who the flu is very dangerous in are diabetics, people with respiratory diseases, people with dementia, and older people, really older people. There polymorphononuclear cells aren't working, but their natural killer cells also aren't working. They have plenty of them, but they're not working. So the probiotic HX

So as the first part of the immune system gets fatigued, but you didn't make the antibodies yet, you still have a functioning immune system to cover that gap of two or three days, so you don't wind up in the hospital.
