Saturday. Welcome to another edition of Invite Health Radio. I'll be your host. Most of you know me. My name is Jerry Hicky. I'm a pharmacist who specializes in nutrition. It's always a pleasure to be here. By the way, it's always a pleasure to be hosting this program. I share this airwave with doctor Mandy Williams, so we do every other Saturday. In
any event, I'm here for Invite Health. I find myself checking my cell phone repeatedly every day to check the air quality, because it really matters. Bad air. Bad air days have become commonplace because of these wildfires up in Canada, and that air comes in the currents down here. I mean, they've been having terrible air quality over in the Midwest, in places like Detroit, terrible air quality from the fires, and we've been getting it too.
Recently, my wife and I went on a vacation and one of the islands in Lake Champlaine up in Vermont, North Hero the air quality was terrible, terrible. Only one day we went out kayaking. We didn't do any hiking. We actually came home early. Oh what a bad experience. And not their fault. I mean, they can't help the air coming down from Canada, but we had a bad experience. So it's important to protect yourself as
much as you can from bad air days. So they look at the air quality and frequently in New York it's been seventy five and frequently it's been over one hundred. And you know, that's dangerous for people with health conditions like heart disease, or kidney disease, or lung disease, is asthma, things like that, or diabetics. Not good for them because many of these people are already inflamed or at risk of things like a stroke and heart attack.
You don't want to add to that, and the bad air adds to that. So the bad air, for instance, I'll give you a quick study. It's the medical University of Vienna, and they looked into bad air and they said, hey, this stuff inflames your heart, and inflames your lungs, and inflames your brain, It inflames your kidneys. It just inflames the whole body. Bad air, bad air, poor air quality, which is common in cities and in industrial areas, as responsible for millions of additional deaths
each year. But lately here in New York, we don't really get bad air here. I mean it's not great, but lately it's been bad. And you get pollutants such as nitrous oxide and sulfur dioxide, and these very quickly. By the way, you're not just breathing these in through your nose and mouth. They actually get into your body through your eyes. A lot of things get into the body through your eyes through the tan ducts. Things such as allergens get in through the eyes. So these inflame your eyes right
away, and they flame your nose right away. So you find yourself, you know what a stuff nose and maybe snoring at night when you normally don't. It definitely inflames you long and these particles they get into your your heart and they're inflaming your heart I mean, it's not bad, and they do this quickly. They inflame your brain. And we're talking about short term exposure here. Of course, long term exposure is rather deadly. Like if you're
in a city we used to call Bombay but now it's called Mumbay. If you're in a city like that, or pie Jing where they have terrible air all the time, it's very dangerous. It increases the risk of strong caught attack, Alzheimer's, fatty liver disease, and liver failure, just a lot of terrible things Alzheimer's. So what happens. You get these fine particulate matter in the fire, in the air you're breathing in from the fire, and
these are like really tiny. They're like thirty times smaller than the diameter of a human hair. So you can't see these things. And the wildfires from Canada are sending these things, the toxic smoke down to us, and this very quickly in flames and damages the immune system. So that's not good if you're fighting cancer or if you're fighting an infection. They damage your heart and inflame your heart. You could get plaque in the heart, you know,
stiffening of the arteries in the heart, which is dangerous. You get the calcified plaque in the heart, they inflame your lungs and this actually, believe it or not. Even this short term exposure to the bad air can trigger a stroke. A piece of plaque and that's in the arteries of the heart can break off from gold of brain or contrigger, a blood clot or contrigger, a heart attack if it's prolonged like it's been. You know, if
the fire was three or four days, that's bad enough. But these fires have been going on since May, so this is long term exposure to really bad air. This cannot just cause damage to the heart and affect delivering the kidneys and the brain and the eyes, et cetera, the lungs, but it can lead to a heart attack. It can lead to a stroke. It can lead to atrofibrillation, this horrible rhythmi of the heart. That's the second most common cause of a stroke. It can lead to heart failure.
So are there supplements that protect you well? First of all, I know you might feel that you look silly, but wearing a mask outside those N sixty five masks will help with the bad air. That's the first thing. There were a couple of days in New York that was so bad that when I went out, I wore a mask and I was surprised. I went into I had to go to a home depot. So you got all those tough guys at home deepot that build houses, and all a lot of them
were wearing masks. We had like the worst dair in the world on that day. But one thing that will help protect you. It's all over the place that's been here. So there's a lot of people suffering for this. It's a lot more dangerous than you give it credit for. It's a lot more dangerous than you think it is. So eat high antioxidant foods because the antioxidants protect you
from the inflammation generated by these toxins in the smoke. The problem with the toxins and the smokers, they irritate and trigger inflammation, which can be deadly for the brain and the heart and all your other organs and tissues. This is not a joke. This is real. Get there's plenty of studies on this, real studies from high quality academic research institutions. So eat high antioxyant foods like an apple and orange, blueberries, kale and spinach and broccoli.
Foods like that are loaded with antioxidants dy'll help protect you. Drink green tea. Try to avoid smoking right now in alcohol because it's just going to make it worse. As far as supplements, a great supplement to start with is rest virtual. Rest Virtual. I take it every day because it's really good for the brain, and it's also good for your blood sugar. And I'm an older guy where blood sugar could become a problem and where you get diminished

There's loads of these fires roll over Canada right now, just burning away. At all those billions of trees up there, that's a tinder box up there. So it's not
a good time to go north, right nolphification go south. In any event, rest very tral has good protective benefits for your brain. That's one place where this inhaled pollution damages you in your brain. It inflames your brain. And of course inflammation of the brain contributes to anxiety and depression and insomnia, but it contributes to memory loss, and it contributes to confusion, and it
also contributes to Alzheimer's. So the rest vertral, first of all, it gets into the brain, helps protect it from inflammation, and it helps resource circulation to the brain. And that's good because that helps the brain get rid of toxins. So that's a good thing. You want toxins to come out of your brain. You don't want them sitting in your brain. you wake up and it's bad old day. So the first thing to protect you from this bad air that's coming down from Canada from all these wildfires is because there's a lot of bad stuff in that air for you, your body, and it can hurt you really quickly, and it can hurt you very seriously. It could trigger a stroke or a heart attack, and a lot of people. So even if you're healthy, it doesn't matter. You could be totally healthy, You could be a thirty year old athlete eating
good food. This air will still hurt you. It doesn't matter if you're if you're in poor health. It doesn't matter if you're in good health. Of course, it's worse for you if you're already in bad health, if you already have a bad condition like diabetes or heart disease or autoimmune diseases. But even a healthy person who's eating right and exercising, it's even dangerous for
them. It doesn't matter if you're a man or a woman. Doesn't matter if you're a child, or you're in your thirties, or your middle aged, or you're elderly. It doesn't matter. It's bad for everybody. So the first thing, rest virtual, Get on rest virtual. Everybody listening to me right now, This is good data, good info. I know what I'm talking about. Eat your high quality foods that are loaded with antioxidants, like your kale and your broccoli and your spinach, and what else would be

knee hurts is because because he's having a problem with his knee. He just had knee replacement on his left knee and now he needs knee replacement on his right knee. But he's not the kind of guy that will talk to me about nutrition. You know, he's not that kind of guy. Dear friend, very good friend. We go back. We used we used to coach football and soccer together when our kids were in grammar school. So, yeah,
I know this guy really well. Right, So I said, you know one of the reasons why your knees fell apart now and you didn't have that before, as you're not making as much collagen anymore. So he said, okay, tell me about And I said, I'll tell you about it. And like a quick two minute synopsis, I said, because you know everybody's hair and we're hanging a hand, and you know in two minutes somebody will be over here talking with us. So let me just say quickly.
You make collagen when you're young, and it makes your body. It's the second most common thing in a bite. This is what I'm telling There's water, then there's collagen, then there's everything else. So to collagen holds you to gather, it allows you to stand, it allows you to move becaus it's making your joints, it's making your skin, your hair, your nails, it's making your bones. It's it's making your ligaments and tendons. It's
part of your muscles. I mean, it makes you spine. I mean it makes you blood, vessel walls, make it makes so many different tissues. But once you stop growing, you make less and less collagen every year, and a certain point is a tipping point where you're just not making enough collagen for the body's needs, which is typically in your forties or fifties. So that's when the knees really get bounced around, right, because you can't
fix them anymore because you're not making the collagen. Where did Gluekolsman and Controit and go to roost and improve the knee health is within the collagen. So if you don't have collagen, it's very hard to help your knees stay healthy. So I said, the reason your hair is behaving differently and it looks thinner and it's hard to control, etc. Is because your hair is about seventy percent collagen, and right now you're making half as much as you used

It's called pep ten and it's been used in human clinical trials. Like when University of Rochester looked at our collegen, they said, hey, this stuff. It helps bones in different ways. It makes the bones thicker and more solid and more resistant to getting damaged. You need to collagen is
