[SPEAKER_04]: How the heck are you? [SPEAKER_04]: How are you feeling? [SPEAKER_04]: It's like, it's, it's recovery week. [SPEAKER_04]: And it's been, and it's been, and it's been an onslaught. [SPEAKER_02]: It's been a hell of a recovery week for for us here.
[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, because yeah, I, I immediately got back from San Diego and spent a couple hours with family, then woke up and got on a plane the very next morning. [SPEAKER_02]: And then I was there for a day, and then I flew back the next day. [SPEAKER_02]: And so really I haven't had a whole lot of recovery, which is why, which is also why this episode of talking about our thoughts on episode ten are a little bit delayed.
[SPEAKER_02]: But I'm really excited to get into it and talk about it because it's actually given me a little bit more time to think, to process. [SPEAKER_04]: to appreciate to appreciate the season and the episode that was episode ten. [SPEAKER_04]: But before we discuss that specifically, let's kind of recap what last week looked like in a segment we call semi pertinent news going down to San Diego. [SPEAKER_01]: It's semi pertinent news all over the place. [SPEAKER_04]: All right.
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, so I mean, we talked about it before this podcast, we talked about it on podcast and I were going to talk about it now for you in this episode. [SPEAKER_04]: Sort of just boiling down everything that was Rick and Morty at San Diego Comic Con, a couple of major events stand out first and foremost. [SPEAKER_04]: the the San Diego Comic Con panel this took place on Friday, out there San Diego.
[SPEAKER_04]: The adults would like to kind of have like a block of some of their biggest shows back to back in the Hilton Bayfront like ballroom. [SPEAKER_04]: And yeah, so we went to high, you clowns. [SPEAKER_04]: And after Rick and Morty was smiling friends, but smack dab in the middle was the Rick and Morty panel. [SPEAKER_04]: And I mean, I thought it was fantastic.
[SPEAKER_04]: We had a lot of, it was like all of the people really that you wanted to see like in the panel, you had like co-creator Dan Harmon, Scott Martyr executive producer. [SPEAKER_04]: voice cast galore in Cardoni Harry Belden Sarah chalk Chris Parnell Spencer grammar like all like everybody was there to talk about the show. [SPEAKER_04]: I think they said it was the first time they had all been on stage together.
[SPEAKER_04]: especially at a Comic Con I think like ever because Harry and Ian haven't been on stage at San Diego Comic Con for a panel and I think them all being together might have been like New York or something but I kind of a moment to the vent to get everybody there including Dan. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah, and in the first comment column we went through firsthand Diego Comic Con we went to. [SPEAKER_02]: It was, it was writer strike, no one, no one was around.
[SPEAKER_02]: We didn't know who the new voice actors were going to be. [SPEAKER_02]: And I think that was the one where Steve Levy got up there and in basically ran the panel. [SPEAKER_02]: And Jacob here, I think was there as well. [SPEAKER_02]: And so yeah, like, [SPEAKER_02]: Then last year was to Kashi Sano with Rick Morty, the anime. [SPEAKER_02]: And then we're like, oh, okay, cool. [SPEAKER_02]: Now this is, so this is like our first chance to see all of them to at the same time.
[SPEAKER_02]: And honestly, honestly, it's the first time we've seen all of them ever. [SPEAKER_02]: I think maybe the closest I saw was maybe like a harm in town or one of like the the ricking morties, like after show things that they had in Burbank.
[SPEAKER_04]: way back when at one of the very first adult swim fest they did a I think that's where they were Ryan Elder did the live score of an episode and there were a lot of like Rick and Morty people there we saw Reilin from afar we saw like people from the show out at the event which was in LA I believe so like it was [SPEAKER_04]: a little bit easier for people to get there, but yeah, they weren't like doing a panel or anything like that.
[SPEAKER_04]: It wasn't a live, live read, like we'll talk about in a little bit. [SPEAKER_04]: But yeah, I don't know. [SPEAKER_04]: I thought it was, it was really fun. [SPEAKER_04]: Fans were really excited to see everybody there. [SPEAKER_04]: The conversation was good. [SPEAKER_04]: I think the moderator did a good job of exploring different ideas and concepts from the show and asking some pretty good questions.
[SPEAKER_04]: I still it still cracks me up anytime there's a question about continuity or you know sort of like the overarching stories and dance always like I don't really care about that like I just want to make good like little encapsulated stories and then Scott Marter steps up he's like I really thought about it a lot like we're thinking about it don't worry please keep watching our show this that's [SPEAKER_04]: And yeah, and so it's great.
[SPEAKER_04]: I'm sure it was fun for those guys, but very fun for the audience. [SPEAKER_04]: Did you have any moments that stood out for you from the panel? [SPEAKER_02]: Um, yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, we talked about it in our immediate reactions for for comic con. [SPEAKER_02]: It's good seeing Dan. [SPEAKER_02]: I always enjoy watching Dan speak with his with his little glass of vodka. [SPEAKER_02]: Um, yeah, and I just I'm like, I miss him. [SPEAKER_02]: I'm in town.
[SPEAKER_02]: uh... but like to having all having all of them up there uh... do it it's so so cool and then they had a special treat for us because when you have a show that goes on as long as Rick and Morty has what do you do uh... spit off [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: You make us been off. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: Huge spin-off announcement. [SPEAKER_04]: The fact that we are getting a president Carter show. [SPEAKER_04]: Is it Carter? [SPEAKER_03]: Mm-hmm.
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: Um, Curtis. [SPEAKER_04]: President Curtis. [SPEAKER_04]: Thank you. [SPEAKER_04]: President Carter is an actual president. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: I can't. [SPEAKER_02]: That's what I was like, I can't. [SPEAKER_02]: Maybe they are. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, so reoccurring character from Rick and Morty, the president president Curtis voiced by the amazing Keith David, who was then brought out on to stage after the announcement.
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, they're doing a spin off of Rick and Morty the first official Rick and Morty spin off.
[SPEAKER_04]: that exist in the same like it's not the same universe I guess it's the same it is it is a dimension in which Rick exists I guess but yeah it's it's the president from the show they were pretty clear that it's not going to be like dimension hopping crazy sci-fi adventures the way that Rick and Morty is [SPEAKER_04]: I thought I thought Dan did a good job of saying like, it's more exfiles than Dr. Who. [SPEAKER_04]: So it's he's the president of the United States.
[SPEAKER_04]: He exists in the same world, but they're still gonna be weird things that happen and him with his cabinet members are gonna go out and have to figure out different, I don't know. [SPEAKER_04]: mysteries or something like that. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yes. [SPEAKER_02]: We'll see when it actually comes out where it was was Rick and Morty smiling friends a are kind of these these weird kind of shows.
[SPEAKER_02]: Uh, this seems to without having seen any trailer or anything. [SPEAKER_04]: We have seen one still like promotional shot that you should have all seen if you follow any socials. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Well, I think we saw an animatic too, didn't we? [SPEAKER_02]: did we? [SPEAKER_02]: I thought there was an animatic that we saw because it was like talking about like killing Paul Bunyan, right? [SPEAKER_04]: Remember?
[SPEAKER_04]: Okay. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: Maybe it was just like I like a quick press conference. [SPEAKER_02]: Yes. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: So we'll see we'll see if that becomes a spin-off podcast if it becomes part of this podcast. [SPEAKER_04]: I don't know.
[SPEAKER_02]: Let us let us know what you want to see in our SS the unofficial Rick and Morty spin-off podcast colon president Curtis episode one season one [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, it will be a long title with lots of subtitles. [SPEAKER_04]: Um, yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: So I don't know that's interesting. [SPEAKER_04]: I, um, I thought some of the descriptions of some of the characters for the new show sound interesting. [SPEAKER_04]: So yeah, I don't know.
[SPEAKER_04]: I, I'm curious to see how it will be. [SPEAKER_04]: We are friendly with some of the folks that work on Rick and Morty, whether through social media or, or whatever.
[SPEAKER_04]: And getting to hear that some of those folks are getting to go and work on the new show as well is encouraging to me because I feel like bringing some of that talent that's worked on Rick and Morty into this new project is going to help probably promote that same look and feel that the original show has but with this new different type of story and different characters. [SPEAKER_04]: So yeah, I don't know excited to see what they cook up.
[SPEAKER_02]: agreed agreed now we we did see them at the panel all of all the voice actors doing their thing and what do you know they had a live table read that in the next night well it was that night it was that night same night yep with all the same panel members and they were doing a live table read of the kyriccus case of Beth Jimin button [SPEAKER_04]: That's right. [SPEAKER_04]: They couldn't have picked an easier titled show or episode to talk about, which they did.
[SPEAKER_04]: They did add one additional special guest producer James Sicilliano was also on stage because they needed some additional voices. [SPEAKER_04]: If you think about that cure, cure case case of Beth German button, you have two baths, right? [SPEAKER_04]: We have regular bath space bath. [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, that's, that's asking a lot of Sarah chalk to do both characters.
[SPEAKER_04]: So, of course, of the obvious choice was Dan Harmon as space Beth as the other Beth, which was entertaining to say the least. [SPEAKER_04]: watch a day and do Beth lines all night long. [SPEAKER_04]: They also, that's the episode where they go to earth world. [SPEAKER_04]: And so there are some other characters there, including, was it Doctor? [SPEAKER_04]: What was the Doctor's name? [SPEAKER_04]: Doctor something? [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, poop parts or something.
[SPEAKER_04]: Doctor, poop parts or something. [SPEAKER_04]: And then obviously the like jellyfish looking girl that Morty hooks up with. [SPEAKER_04]: And so of course you got Jean Jean is very important in this episode. [SPEAKER_04]: So like James Silliano did a lot of gene lines. [SPEAKER_04]: Spencer Grammar was working double duty both at summer and as that jellyfish girl. [SPEAKER_04]: As well as just other random lines that they had they had farmed out to the rest of the cast.
[SPEAKER_04]: And then we got Martyr who was doing all of the stage direction, setting the scene, kind of explaining the action, and honestly like [SPEAKER_04]: As far as like live theater for Rick and Morty, like it was a blast. [SPEAKER_04]: It was a ton of fun to watch. [SPEAKER_04]: The cast was really into it. [SPEAKER_04]: They were laughing at each other's lines.
[SPEAKER_04]: They were enjoying it, but also just like completely crushing the performance and not like [SPEAKER_04]: missing lot like there were obviously like occasional like flubs or yeah I think one time like Spencer red one of Harry's lines or something when they were going back and forth and which is just funny right like that just is funny that that's happening live and adds authenticity to it but it was really fun to just watch them do that
[SPEAKER_04]: Even without acting it, if you've seen the episode or watched it numerous times, you already kind of have the visuals in your head. [SPEAKER_04]: So then to see them working through it. [SPEAKER_04]: For me, it was one of my highlights of the entire weekend. [SPEAKER_02]: agreed. [SPEAKER_02]: I talked to Lee agreed. [SPEAKER_02]: It followed up with that with the the smiling friends live table read, which was also fun, but this is a Rick and Morty podcast.
[SPEAKER_02]: We don't need to talk about smiling friends as much. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, it was fun. [SPEAKER_04]: It different ways. [SPEAKER_04]: They bring a different energy for sure. [SPEAKER_02]: They do. [SPEAKER_02]: I mean, a little more chaotic. [SPEAKER_02]: But yeah, no, it was it was so fun and we talked about it in our our post. [SPEAKER_02]: finale kind of preview.
[SPEAKER_02]: It just so great being being there being part of the fandom seeing watching it with all of the different fans. [SPEAKER_02]: And we're going to get into the next part, which is the next night Saturday night was the night of new. [SPEAKER_02]: It covered a bunch of they showed the episode of How How You Clowns, which we watched in the panel, smiling friends.
[SPEAKER_02]: The smiling friends that we watched in the panel a couple of other shows and then they showed the season finale of Rick and Morty there which we want to talk about here in a second because I think that that's really special but before we do that Travis let's talk about the Dan Harmon social media minute [SPEAKER_04]: Dan, harm is not what I'm talking about. [SPEAKER_04]: Okay, Dan, harm is social media.
[SPEAKER_04]: I just want to peel back the curtain a little bit on our social media because just like the infinity gauntlet, having infinity stone. [SPEAKER_04]: I love that. [SPEAKER_04]: Once you bring them all together, like your power is limitless. [SPEAKER_04]: We got another, we got another, we got another time stone today.
[SPEAKER_04]: a big shout out to Sarah Chock for following us on Instagram, officially as of today, which is weird because we both thought she already followed the account. [SPEAKER_03]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: But I think that might have been when we had like the other account. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: And yeah, then there was the whole mix up with our first Comic-Con and the Instagram deleting our account or something like that. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I think it was the other other account.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I'm going to look right now, but see, you keep talking. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, so Harry and Ian, great guys, they have been supporters of our account pretty much since they got the job. [SPEAKER_04]: Chris Parnell, which is still unbelievable to me that he follows our account.
[SPEAKER_04]: more unbelievable that a video that I took with my phone of a panel and then shared to our stories was was reposted on his stories like that's just that guys that guys in lazy Sunday you guys I mean like it's mind bottling anyway so so anyway Spencer grammar like what up
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, we could we could we can completely eradicate half of all life and with a snap of our fingers if we could get the the one remaining Smith family member in on in on the Instagram so that's it that's the social media minute and that's I mean that's pretty much it. [SPEAKER_04]: There's no pertinent news unless there's anything else you wanted to talk about [SPEAKER_02]: No, I think maybe I was just going to say that the harm in must be Galactus.
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I don't know. [SPEAKER_04]: We're that's still like another two seasons. [SPEAKER_04]: We got to get past season ten before we start worrying. [SPEAKER_02]: We got to get it to face five of the internet mess, or I says, yeah, story. [SPEAKER_02]: We'll work on that. [SPEAKER_04]: All right, that's it for some of my pertinent news.
[SPEAKER_04]: A lot of that stuff we've talked about before a little bit more in depth on other episodes, but if you miss those, you know, make sure you're following, subscribe to it on all of our channels and things like that. [SPEAKER_04]: But yeah, so that's it for some of my pertinent news. [SPEAKER_04]: When we come back, we will be breaking down a incredible episode. [SPEAKER_04]: We'll be talking about the season finale. [SPEAKER_04]: When we come back, stick around.
[SPEAKER_04]: Don't go in there. [SPEAKER_04]: All right, everybody. [SPEAKER_04]: We are back. [SPEAKER_04]: Thank you so much for sticking around. [SPEAKER_04]: It's finale time. [SPEAKER_04]: So let's talk about it in the main thing. [SPEAKER_01]: Oh, main thing. [SPEAKER_01]: Memories of main thing. [SPEAKER_01]: Main thing. [SPEAKER_01]: Mr. Boss. [UNKNOWN]: Mr. Boss.
[SPEAKER_02]: Can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we can we
[SPEAKER_02]: And, and the night of the finale, I got, I got a Mr. Boss. [SPEAKER_02]: And, you know, like, you can have this Travis because he didn't have it and like, he really wanted it. [SPEAKER_02]: And so he opened, the box has Mr. Boss and he's smiling and he's smiling in the way Mr. Boss says. [SPEAKER_02]: Travis opens it up. [SPEAKER_02]: He pulls it out and Mr. Boss isn't smiling at all. [SPEAKER_02]: He looks really, he looks really creepy.
[SPEAKER_02]: And he's like, I want to, I want to put, before he took it out, he's like, I want to put this out on my desk at work. [SPEAKER_02]: And as we run out like, Travis, they look like you with a two-pay on. [SPEAKER_02]: That's terrible. [SPEAKER_02]: And then when I go home, I feel Jackson knows doesn't hook down that much. [SPEAKER_02]: And then he laughed, then he laughed too. [SPEAKER_02]: But anyways. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's good.
[SPEAKER_02]: Anyway, let's talk about that Travis. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, let's talk about hot Rick. [SPEAKER_02]: Hot Rick. [SPEAKER_02]: Yes, that's right. [SPEAKER_02]: Rick season eight. [SPEAKER_02]: Episode ten. [SPEAKER_02]: Air date seven, twenty seven, twenty five. [SPEAKER_02]: Written by Albert Lundy and James Ceciliano directed by Brian Kaufman. [SPEAKER_02]: It guest stars John Reece Davies and Tom Davis. [SPEAKER_02]: Uh, our, our benopsis, Travis.
[SPEAKER_02]: Bra. [SPEAKER_02]: Well, it's on ours. [SPEAKER_02]: Bra. [SPEAKER_02]: Bra. [SPEAKER_02]: Sometimes we try weird stuff to let go of the past. [SPEAKER_02]: That's right. [SPEAKER_04]: Arsonopsis, ours andopsis, uh, Rick is more emotionally open, but what cost? [SPEAKER_04]: Uh, so yeah, it's, um, that's, I mean, that's the, that's the show thanks for listening. [SPEAKER_04]: Uh, it's this this episode again.
[SPEAKER_04]: We watched it for the first time out on the lawn behind the San Diego Convention Center for adult swims and night of new [SPEAKER_04]: We talked about how crazy this week was going to be. [SPEAKER_04]: We talked about Brandon having to fly across the country and back. [SPEAKER_04]: And so in my head, there was like, I thought, like, okay, maybe I can just like really lock in while we're watching this episode, jot down some notes.
[SPEAKER_04]: And then we can like record this while we're both in San Diego together. [SPEAKER_04]: Don't have to worry about doing it later, blah, blah, blah. [SPEAKER_04]: And [SPEAKER_04]: Less than five minutes in this episode, I was like, put my phone away. [SPEAKER_04]: Just just watch what's happening. [SPEAKER_04]: And I'm glad I did because this ended up being [SPEAKER_04]: really a standout episode for being a lot of ways.
[SPEAKER_04]: Some of the turns in it, some of the things that like I wasn't expecting to happen, the emotion, like the character progression in this episode. [SPEAKER_04]: This is this to me, I appreciate this episode more and more each time I watch it and the the longer I think about it. [SPEAKER_04]: So [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I don't know. [SPEAKER_04]: What were your initial thoughts going into this episode, and then once you watched it for the first time? [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: But before I get into that, just real quick, the title is Hot Rick. [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know. [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know what it's a reference to. [SPEAKER_02]: Hot Rod, Hot Fuzz. [SPEAKER_02]: And I think I think we, I tried asking Philmark, like, do you know what? [SPEAKER_02]: But all, they all use production titles. [SPEAKER_02]: And so they don't actually always see what the title references at the start.
[SPEAKER_04]: So I definitely think it's based on the Andy Sandberg film by, you know, from from the early two thousand's hot rod, because it's just such a parallel. [SPEAKER_02]: It isn't much. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, he's just, I genuinely can't think of like, he's trying to get us down to fight him. [SPEAKER_04]: I got a raise money for your conveniently priced heart surgery. [SPEAKER_04]: By the way, Chris Parnell in that movie as well. [SPEAKER_02]: That's right. [SPEAKER_02]: That's right.
[SPEAKER_02]: That's right. [SPEAKER_02]: Shout out. [SPEAKER_02]: But as far as the episode itself, we talked about going to the panel in some of the questions that got asked at the Rick and Morty panel. [SPEAKER_02]: And the moderator asks her a chalk. [SPEAKER_02]: As far as episodes, what's your favorite episode of the season? [SPEAKER_02]: And I don't not sure if we, I think we saw a sneak preview of an extended cold open for the episode, uh, beforehand.
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, because they sent us a cold open for you to post on the subreddit, but then the one that we saw on the panel was the full cold open that ended up actually being part of the episode. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Memory Rick. [SPEAKER_02]: And so Sarah Chock had said, [SPEAKER_02]: Actually, my favorite episode, I thought it was going to be the Kirick's case, but in it being, she's like the finale of episode is my favorite.
[SPEAKER_02]: Like there's she just talked very, very highly of it. [SPEAKER_02]: And so seeing the memory Rick stuff, her saying that, oh, this is her favorite episode of the season, I was interested to see about why that is. [SPEAKER_02]: We pretty quickly rapidly find out why that that is. [SPEAKER_02]: She gets to play a lot of a lot of depth that she may not you'd be used to be playing in a regular morning.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: There's there's a lot of best in this episode of all shapes and sizes. [SPEAKER_04]: Like there are there's a lot of best through the ages. [SPEAKER_04]: Yes. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: Quite literally Travis. [SPEAKER_04]: Like thinking about quite literally. [SPEAKER_04]: I mean, Sarah Chocks always like in interviews really gravitated towards some of the more emotionally developed episodes, I think.
[SPEAKER_04]: And when you watch this episode through, it makes perfect sense to me why she said it was her favorite. [SPEAKER_04]: I'm willing to guess a lot of people liked this episode for that reason.
[SPEAKER_04]: It's it's not [SPEAKER_04]: full of jokes and zany like crazy comedy throughout though there are some great bits in the episode but like when we look at the themes of this episode the thing that really stands out to me is just this idea of letting go of your past opening yourself up to new experiences being being ready to face what scares you and not like letting that past hold you back
[SPEAKER_04]: And like that's, that's heavy stuff for, you know, a cartoon that airs on cable at like a eleven thirty at night where the main character burps through half of his lines. [SPEAKER_02]: Like there's like heavy heavy concepts right after another family guy episode where there's random interstitials. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I mean, it's, we, we, we walked back from the green. [SPEAKER_02]: That Saturday night, we got on to the shuttle. [SPEAKER_02]: We weren't talking.
[SPEAKER_02]: We didn't, we were kind of like still thinking as we're on the, the shuttle back to the hotel. [SPEAKER_02]: And then we got to the hotel, got some room bruise going on. [SPEAKER_02]: And then we started talking about the episode a little bit more.
[SPEAKER_02]: And it was a readily apparent to me that there was a conversation there that like we, there was a conversation that went deeper than like we got in like personal stuff that was going on and like with different people that we know in our personal lives. [SPEAKER_02]: And it was like, [SPEAKER_02]: It was interesting that that is where the conversation went from after watching this Rick and Morty episode.
[SPEAKER_02]: And certainly those things have happened before, but this maybe is because of where we were in the hotel with them room bruise and whiskey. [SPEAKER_04]: But it was it was it was it was also filling time because we were trying to be spoiler free because we were going to release the podcast before the actual.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, but but I'm not even saying when we were doing our episode I'm saying even like just you and me off Mike we were talking Oh, yeah when we were just hanging out and feeling loose.
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, just I mean it's we get to hang out like that maybe like once a year if we're lucky like so Twice if one of us gets a nice promotion [SPEAKER_04]: But like, yeah, so obviously, like, there was, yeah, there was, there was, there was some good energy in the room and and just able to have good conversations, but it was a heavy episode that like, we were more emotionally open. [SPEAKER_02]: We forgot who our wives were.
[SPEAKER_02]: And no, and part of that conversation somehow, somehow my interactions with the bartender when I was trying to get ice down stairs rolled into our conversations about it because he, I tried to get some ice and then he was talking to the waitress. [SPEAKER_02]: I was like, oh, sorry to mean to interrupt you.
[SPEAKER_02]: He's like, no, we're just talking about [SPEAKER_02]: Our GM died, GM's wife died a couple weeks ago and he was looking at her straight in the eyes when he was helping her to the toilet and she died looking at him straight in the eyes. [SPEAKER_02]: How traumatizing is that? [SPEAKER_02]: I was like, very, can I have this ice now?
[SPEAKER_02]: You know, I have the ice please, but you know, it was talking about it it leaned into this episode because we're talking about memories and like how death can be traumatizing and you know how like how [SPEAKER_02]: We would love to get rid of some memories, but also you don't want to get rid of memories because they also kind of keep keep you who you are. [SPEAKER_02]: And but they may hold you back.
[SPEAKER_02]: And the future like I don't know how I would be if somebody died in front of me like that. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, no, no, that's that totally makes sense.
[SPEAKER_04]: And I think I think that structure of this episode does a good job of kind of setting the stage for what [SPEAKER_04]: Like what Rick is going through at this point in the show, you kind of have that opening with him and bug an and he's they're in bed together and she starts to kind of open that door a little bit to be like, hey, I know this is just like [SPEAKER_04]: This is just sex, but like what if you came to this thing with my family?
[SPEAKER_04]: And Rick's really like closed off, and oh, it's just gonna get messed up, and we're gonna ruin things. [SPEAKER_04]: Are you putting on sex clothes? [SPEAKER_04]: Or not? [SPEAKER_04]: But like very much kind of a glimpse into where Rick is in terms of seeking relationships. [SPEAKER_04]: Like he's not looking for that.
[SPEAKER_04]: And and and she knows that he's hung up on his wife from forty years ago like she says that in the show right and so it's this this episode is a journey for Rick in dealing with that moving on and finding. [SPEAKER_04]: some sort of progression. [SPEAKER_04]: But at the same time, like, it's very much about Beth and how her life has been impacted by having a Rick that went away, that wasn't present through her life.
[SPEAKER_04]: Because this Omega device, and I thought this was really interesting, it erased all versions of Diane throughout the multiverse [SPEAKER_04]: And it erased memories of Diane. [SPEAKER_04]: So when he says in the opening of the show that like Beth only thinks she remembers her mom, but like she doesn't really remember her, that to me is something I never really thought about.
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: I'm sure we've had conversations in the past about Beth knowing more about Diane or things because she would have been raised by her. [SPEAKER_04]: But the fact that that isn't something that Beth has either was kind of kind of a big deal in my head.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and in one of the scenes, while they're in Beth's head in one of her memories, Diane's coming to pick her up from school or wherever, and she's in the Diane, the memory of Diane is in the car, but it's all blurry. [SPEAKER_02]: She isn't as like a green blur. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's kind of missing. [SPEAKER_02]: And so, yeah, and we know, I think that's one of the things that we kind of talk about as thematically, right, is memories are misleading.
[SPEAKER_02]: Memories can be wrong. [SPEAKER_02]: We know that from police sketch artists, right, or people identifying them and police line-ups. [SPEAKER_02]: that our memories are not necessarily the most accurate thing. [SPEAKER_02]: We remember what we want to remember. [SPEAKER_02]: We remember the good things. [SPEAKER_02]: We remember the bad things we want to remember. [SPEAKER_02]: And then we make those reality. [SPEAKER_02]: And that's what we see with memory Rick and memory Diane.
[SPEAKER_02]: Those are just those are things that people remember of them themselves. [SPEAKER_02]: And Rick says to the end to Beth, you know, that's that's not your mom. [SPEAKER_02]: Your [SPEAKER_02]: You know, Beth did anything, she could, or Diane did everything she could to get back with you and your mom loved you more than that. [SPEAKER_02]: And what would a fantastical thought?
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, it's a neat way to bring back an interesting character from past episode, the return of memory Rick. [SPEAKER_04]: It was a nice callback and I think it was cool the way that they used memory Rick in this episode.
[SPEAKER_04]: to explore like parts of best upbringing to add a new wrinkle to things like like the presentation of Jerry at the beginning or he's like Rick's always been a loving father that was there when we got married and was there when in our kids are born and invented peanut butter and jelly like like [SPEAKER_04]: If you rely on your memories as being accurate and somebody can get in there and mix things up.
[SPEAKER_04]: All of a sudden, your entire world view, your entire perspective of things can change. [SPEAKER_04]: And that's what makes memory, you're a really dangerous, but he's also just kind of this little sentient guy that just wants a good life for himself and wants a whole some family, but if he can only exist in other people's memories, he ends up kind of screwing things up. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and he certainly doesn't, you know, he.
[SPEAKER_02]: When we see him again, and in the first time I watched this, I was like, he's kind of, he's an asshole, but then the one, [SPEAKER_02]: watching through the episode, watching the episode multiple times, it's not that he's an asshole. [SPEAKER_02]: He just, he loves Diane too. [SPEAKER_02]: Like, like, he, that is part of Rick's personality is memory that wants to be with Diane, that that urine's for her that that misses her. [SPEAKER_02]: And that's, that's what he wants.
[SPEAKER_02]: I, I thought about this about him being in Jerry's head, right? [SPEAKER_02]: The idea that [SPEAKER_02]: He's not like he's not tanting ricks or he's not tanting Jerry's memory of Rick he wants he still wants Jerry to like Rick so much so that it's like yeah look Rick was there at at the birth and he created be a better jelly like [SPEAKER_02]: he's not he's not poisoning Jerry's mind towards towards Rick he's actually improving it in like strengthening that relationship.
[SPEAKER_04]: But it's but it's based on things that didn't really happen. [SPEAKER_02]: No, of course. [SPEAKER_04]: So it's not it's still like gaslighting kind of like it's till like no Rick's always been a good guy even though clearly he wasn't. [SPEAKER_02]: It is, but so just separating the Jerry stuff to what end is memory Rick trying to do that stuff in Jerry's mind for. [SPEAKER_02]: At that point, I mean, he's not trying to get out.
[SPEAKER_02]: He's not trying to do anything like that. [SPEAKER_02]: He's just like, he's spending time with family and maybe he's because Jerry's such a family oriented guy that he's like, I want to be a part of the family. [SPEAKER_02]: I want to keep the family together. [SPEAKER_04]: Well, I think I think memory Rick is a memory of a [SPEAKER_04]: I guess a better Rick, a kinder, more family oriented Rick.
[SPEAKER_04]: And so when he is able to get into Jerry's mind, which apparently happened when they brain swapped or something like that, right? [SPEAKER_04]: Like, this is his existence because Rick makes it very clear that he's not real. [SPEAKER_04]: He is like a figment. [SPEAKER_04]: He is he's something that exists in the mind.
[SPEAKER_04]: he exists in Jerry's mind and Jerry's memories are of his family of Beth of growing up and so that is the quote unquote playground that memory Rick has to exist in right and so when Rick pulls him out of Jerry's mind and puts him in a synthetic brain and like like like a blank canvas [SPEAKER_04]: He doesn't have other organic memories to interact with. [SPEAKER_04]: He just has empty space, right? [SPEAKER_04]: He can work with, but he does, there's, it's lonely.
[SPEAKER_04]: There's nobody else there with him. [SPEAKER_04]: And so for him to exist, he has to interact with the other memories that are there. [SPEAKER_04]: And then the byproduct of that is that Jerry starts to think better things about Rick than or what are actually true. [SPEAKER_04]: So yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: So the selfishness of memory Rick is it's damaging. [SPEAKER_02]: It's damaging. [SPEAKER_02]: It's damage is best. [SPEAKER_02]: Even though it's for him.
[SPEAKER_02]: He's doing it for noble causes. [SPEAKER_02]: He doesn't realize or he does realize what the effects might happen. [SPEAKER_02]: But he really really realizes the effects that it might have on Beth when he ingests [SPEAKER_02]: and just brings memory Diane and on board and memory Diane infects Hannah Beth. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, Hannah Beth, which is written in the captions as well.
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, it's that's a point where I feel like memory Rick's motivations definitely change from [SPEAKER_04]: I'm just trying to be a cool guy that's like keeping the family together to he wants to be with Diane like when he's when he's hiding out in best mind. [SPEAKER_04]: And he hears that there is a memory version of Diane somewhere that he could potentially get to.
[SPEAKER_04]: He builds this entire plan in best memories to train best past into to getting to a point where she can go and free Diane and so this version of Rick this young version of Rick wants to be with Diane like that's that those and those are the two people that fell in love and kind of created [SPEAKER_04]: All of what this show is, you know, ultimately for better or worse.
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I, um, maybe not the best intentions or use definitely some fallout from from what he goes to try to do, but incredible moments in this episode. [SPEAKER_04]: I gasped. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: Like, and I was not the only one out watching this live out at the adult swim. [SPEAKER_02]: What a, what a, what a, [SPEAKER_02]: What a cool moment. [SPEAKER_02]: What a cool moment in the in the subreddit for the discussion post.
[SPEAKER_02]: I I pinned a comment saying yeah like the the first like the most dropped jaw dropping moment in the show that I've experienced. [SPEAKER_02]: I think it helped that we were there. [SPEAKER_02]: with a crowd of people of Rick and Morty fans all watching at the same time that really, really helped it. [SPEAKER_02]: And although there was a quick fix for it, that moment was like, holy shit.
[SPEAKER_04]: I was not expecting that and it's a relatively quick fix in that it's it's resolved in the same episode and only a few minutes later, but like there's still a few minutes where you're kind of sitting with the notion that we're back down to one bath like like this is the unfortunate and tragic end of the space bath arc in in the history of the show, which I was [SPEAKER_04]: genuinely stunned by.
[SPEAKER_04]: I felt like they were doing a lot in the show to kind of make space Beth a regular part of the family. [SPEAKER_04]: The curious case of Beth German button like that episode did a lot to kind of like reinforce who the two Beths are and what their the differences between them, but their their issues with Rick and and healing in that as well.
[SPEAKER_04]: And so [SPEAKER_04]: Um, yeah, I was I was shocked and and and then when when Rick fixes her later like it does a couple of things one kind of add some relief like okay like she's still around there still there's still room for that character to be a part of the show, but also How freaked out Rick is yeah, and he finds her in the sub basement [SPEAKER_04]: To me, it's like that is not the jaded unattached Rick of the early seasons.
[SPEAKER_04]: Like he is freaked out thinking he's losing Beth in that moment until he's able to fix her. [SPEAKER_04]: And I think that adds to the weight of this episode and you know, the emotional availability of Rick. [SPEAKER_04]: So yeah, I thought I thought it was pretty pretty incredible. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I agree.
[SPEAKER_02]: It was a fairly quick quick fix, but what the real takeaway there is how freak out freaked out and like, oh, please let this work, let it not be too late, right? [SPEAKER_02]: And then he turns his hand. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, screwdriver and it's a good thing that you're, you have a cyborg neck or whatever. [SPEAKER_02]: Robot spine. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: And so so I like that. [SPEAKER_02]: I like that. [SPEAKER_02]: I did.
[SPEAKER_02]: I I liked how I liked leading up to that moment. [SPEAKER_02]: The in Beth hit space Beth in the back of the head. [SPEAKER_02]: Because because memory Rick told her like you have to act normal. [SPEAKER_02]: You can't ever let anybody on to that you, you know, anything strange until she gets triggered and and hit space best in the back of the head and you're like, you know my head's metal, right? [SPEAKER_02]: Is your skull metal?
[SPEAKER_04]: Yes, fight scene, which like I have some other favorite moments from this, but I kind of want to kind of want to close out our discussion with those.
[SPEAKER_04]: So I think this is an opportunity because we've already mentioned numerous of these, but I kind of rolled through some of the favorite bits because even though there were a lot of like heavy emotions and themes throughout this episode, [SPEAKER_04]: there was still it's still funny comedy show so that they definitely cut in some funny bits as well talked about the the sex clothes bit at the beginning um this was a scene from the the pre-released
[SPEAKER_04]: opening sequence but a little interdimensional cable for you with cake or fake. [SPEAKER_04]: This is one of those game show cooking show type things like you see on actual food network where people make really convincing cakes and you have to decide if it's a real object or a cake. [SPEAKER_04]: But in this case, it's a baby. [SPEAKER_04]: And Mr. Stabby, I think, was his name. [SPEAKER_04]: Who has knives for hands? [SPEAKER_04]: And I didn't know.
[SPEAKER_01]: Don't worry, I brought my own. [SPEAKER_04]: And I was canceled. [SPEAKER_04]: Well, you guys missed it. [SPEAKER_04]: Turns out it was real and Mr. Stabby's canceled. [SPEAKER_04]: And then all the stuff with Jerry, then just going to miss remembering Rick and all that stuff. [SPEAKER_04]: I thought it was pretty excellent.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I do like that little scene, you know, memory Rick is in the memory, but like all the young versions of Rick and in Beth, I want to [SPEAKER_02]: I meant to and I didn't go back to just screenshoting that freeze framing it and then like kind of looking in the background for first off, I'm not sure if you did.
[SPEAKER_04]: Oh, yeah, I know I didn't get a chance to do that, but that that would be good to see if there's any any other characters that are kind of [SPEAKER_04]: lurking in the background as well. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, there's there's a great fourth wall break and in this as Rick's trying to fix Jerry's brain and and him saying that they there that memory Rick must have gotten into Jerry when they when they mixed up in switch brains last season.
[SPEAKER_04]: So yeah, like he's still doing that meta commentary, which I think is great. [SPEAKER_02]: uh, the uh, that whole badass scene of like the get smart. [SPEAKER_02]: Ask mind fortress where Rick keeps the his one memory of Diane where she is uh, in a gun range.
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, yeah, I think it's really interesting to have that sort of peak of like a physical place in Rick's mind where he is he is keeping this one memory of Diane safe and then and then rolling into him removing it and taking that whole thing and letting it go.
[SPEAKER_04]: It's it's just a good visual like it's a cool they could have just [SPEAKER_04]: had him hit a button and his eyes roll back and then all of a sudden like there's a Diane picture on the screen, but the fact that they went into that whole advanced fortress kind of to show the level of depth that that Rick has kind of placed this in almost his subconscious. [SPEAKER_04]: I thought it was a really cool touch.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, there's a, if you think about it too hard, it makes starts to make things confusing. [SPEAKER_02]: But if he's removed the memory of Diane, but he still knows who Diane is, then like he hasn't gotten rid of the memory of Diane necessarily. [SPEAKER_02]: So it's sometimes it gets confusing. [SPEAKER_02]: If you think about it too hard. [SPEAKER_02]: So let's not. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: Let's best not just not think about it.
[SPEAKER_04]: It's, [SPEAKER_04]: It's like when you tell me about somebody I went to high school with. [SPEAKER_04]: And I'm like, I think I did have a class with them, but I don't remember anything about them. [SPEAKER_04]: Like I remember the existed. [SPEAKER_04]: I just don't remember any of my, how I felt about them or anything like I was married to them. [SPEAKER_02]: And I had a kid with them. [SPEAKER_02]: But I think it was just, I don't know anything else about them.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, it's just a name at that point. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, but you know, like, but the, in that moment, right, that some of that confusion, the, that's kind of why Earth Beth goes a little bit crazy early in the early conversation before her and space Beth can to fight. [SPEAKER_02]: There is the little bit about it was strange that you said dad told me that he'd be paranoid. [SPEAKER_02]: That's the strange sentence.
[SPEAKER_02]: He's like, oh, it's just something he told me when we were teenagers. [SPEAKER_02]: Like, I had the same memories as you. [SPEAKER_02]: He was gone in our teenage years, right? [SPEAKER_02]: And so memory Rick is like doing all of this stuff, painting all of Beth's memories. [SPEAKER_02]: when she did not have a father figure for all of that time.
[SPEAKER_02]: And so how like skits of frenic does that make somebody to be like, that's not that's not what my reality is that's not that's not how I grew up. [SPEAKER_04]: But that's what I remember, which is, which I think is why we see by the end of the episode, her having a complete mental breakdown and putting a gun to her head and thinking like, I'm just too many voices in my head. [SPEAKER_04]: Like, yes, is having that breakdown.
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: Anyway, transitioning from that to memory risk here tech. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, he graduated to steam punk. [SPEAKER_02]: That's right. [SPEAKER_02]: That's right. [SPEAKER_02]: He's been a little guy. [SPEAKER_04]: He was always good with the gears. [SPEAKER_04]: There's a line where Rick says hop off my sack or hop off the sack and then summer points it out. [SPEAKER_04]: Like Grandpa, when did you start saying hop off the sack?
[SPEAKER_04]: I've done that entertaining. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, back to memory Rick when he when best memory of Rick leaving happens and then like Rick falls through the ceiling. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, I'm back. [SPEAKER_04]: My hair's different. [SPEAKER_04]: We're going to have so much fun together and then we're going to save your mom from a secret underground memory prison. [SPEAKER_04]: And and little bath is like, okay, it's like, what's going on here?
[SPEAKER_02]: I dig the, I'm assuming, I'm assuming that is evil Rick. [SPEAKER_02]: Like the one that the one that leaves, right?
[SPEAKER_02]: Is that is that is that him or is that a different version of Rick who also [SPEAKER_04]: uh you know abandoned his child so if everybody got warped back to their original realities okay so no this is not well so they all went back to evil rick rick primes reality morty is rick primes grandson which would mean death is [SPEAKER_04]: Well, but Morty is not. [SPEAKER_04]: I'm done. [SPEAKER_02]: Okay. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, uh, hit us up fast by bedtime to the mass.
[SPEAKER_02]: Do the math. [SPEAKER_04]: Do the math for everyone somebody get some red yarn and a court board hit us up in the comment. [SPEAKER_02]: of a bug-an, because Rick, he wants to move on. [SPEAKER_02]: He wants to move on. [SPEAKER_02]: He's hung up on the pitch. [SPEAKER_02]: The pitch is just him going to a thing I invited to, I invited him to already. [SPEAKER_02]: But bug-an, when he's like, I didn't know I wasn't supposed to say about having sex with you.
[SPEAKER_02]: And she's like, you're a genius and you looked up nothing about my culture. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: He doesn't really do the research. [SPEAKER_04]: He's more of a, he's more of a think up things on the fly type of. [SPEAKER_02]: That's right. [SPEAKER_02]: The memory best training montage with all different memory best that that's cool. [SPEAKER_02]: I also liked the gang of best memories.
[SPEAKER_02]: I think we talked about it that night, but it's like that Avengers moment where they all like all the different bets all in in one frame and they all look bad ass like that that's really cool. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, that's really good. [SPEAKER_04]: We talked about the metal skull line. [SPEAKER_04]: There's a line in there where memory Rick is talking to memory Diane right after Diane has kind of woken up the first Beth memory.
[SPEAKER_04]: And she says it shouldn't be that easy to create sentience. [SPEAKER_04]: And he's like, yeah, I think every parent has had that same thought at some point. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, it's kind of weird that you can just kind of make a person that has a whole belief system and thoughts and everything. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Anyway, anyway, I like you wrote this down. [SPEAKER_02]: Great, great note.
[SPEAKER_02]: The scenes from season eight as they try to get to Beth's recent memories. [SPEAKER_02]: I love this because it ties everything from everything we've seen through season eight. [SPEAKER_02]: all of these little Easter eggs. [SPEAKER_02]: It ties the episodes together in a way that I'm not sure we've seen throughout the series so far.
[SPEAKER_02]: Like, like, yeah, like, there's been little things like, oh, we see Rick dumping trash from their planet and a couple of episodes later, their parasites. [SPEAKER_02]: We see things like that.
[SPEAKER_04]: but we haven't seen a through line or connective tissue from the season itself that is so clear clear cut and and it's one of those things that's almost like a gift back to the fans right where like maybe maybe your casual viewer you don't watch every episode you're not gonna you're not gonna catch all of these but [SPEAKER_04]: If you're die hard and you've watched every episode of the season, then yeah, you recognize the big, you know, death race truck in the front yard.
[SPEAKER_04]: And then Jerry drinking from a giant hamster water bottle that he would. [SPEAKER_02]: I laughed out loud on the green to that part. [SPEAKER_04]: There's there's there's clips of of Beth's messing with their with their ages and things like that. [SPEAKER_04]: So so for them to kind of sprinkle all of those back in is it was a great way to almost just kind of like put a bow on the season as a whole and also incorporate all those those separate adventures into one episode.
[SPEAKER_04]: So I thought I thought it was really well done. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, just just a couple more things here. [SPEAKER_02]: The, the, the, the, one of the recent memories. [SPEAKER_02]: We're like, if, if we're here, that means she already, and then it's then they're already falling.
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, it was a cool way to kind of twist with because that the pacing of really the last like, I don't know, third of this episode is so quick with them racing to try and find her and things and then bouncing between reality and what's going on inside best mind like it's it's a weird thing where you don't really realize like, oh, no, they're not really writing with Beth. [SPEAKER_04]: This is a memory that Beth is having. [SPEAKER_04]: So yeah, she's already driven off the cliff.
[SPEAKER_04]: And so like for them to do that was was really interesting. [SPEAKER_04]: Beth freaking out saying she remembers hating her dad and then loving her dad. [SPEAKER_04]: And then Rick stepping in to say like that's just called being alive. [SPEAKER_04]: So he'd like yeah, like life is messy and there's good times and bad times. [SPEAKER_04]: Yep. [SPEAKER_04]: That entire scene, it falls into more of my best worst parts of the show.
[SPEAKER_04]: So once that's all done, Rick kind of cleans everything up and Beth comes back to the dinner slash breakfast table and Jerry's comment is, you're feeling it all radicalized. [SPEAKER_04]: Thanks, Jerry. [SPEAKER_04]: Thanks, Jerry. [SPEAKER_04]: Thanks, Jerry. [SPEAKER_02]: And then finally, Mr. Puppy butthole at the end of the season.
[SPEAKER_02]: But with a little twist, there's the plots thickening a little bit because we see Mrs. Puppy butthole as there with other Puppy butthole characters. [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know if that's what their race is called. [SPEAKER_02]: But there's there's an invader. [SPEAKER_02]: trying to replace her husband. [SPEAKER_04]: And we don't know what's going to go on with this, but clearly from another dimension, something about molecules or something.
[SPEAKER_02]: What would you like us to do? [SPEAKER_02]: Every time I watch that tag, I go, I look at like the earth, a molecule thing, like in the background, like, what does that trying to say? [SPEAKER_02]: What is that? [SPEAKER_02]: What are they trying to lead us to with all that diagramming in the background? [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, it's weird. [SPEAKER_04]: It's weird, but it's always great to see, you know, MPV back with another end of season tag. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, yeah.
[SPEAKER_02]: Well, Travis, let's get into our best and worst parts. [SPEAKER_02]: Let me just go and start by saying, I don't think I have any worst parts of this episode. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, no, these are all just normally I like to pick one or two. [SPEAKER_04]: Sometimes they're both best parts, but there's I think five bullets in this in this section because there's so much good stuff. [SPEAKER_04]: I couldn't just like slam it into favorite bits.
[SPEAKER_04]: Like there's a lot of huge moments in this episode. [SPEAKER_04]: The first being the the moment when memory Rick and memory Diane are reunited [SPEAKER_04]: It's physical. [SPEAKER_04]: There's some heavy kissing and but it is a moment where like I don't know if they're [SPEAKER_04]: is ever another opportunity to do something like this.
[SPEAKER_04]: This is this is providing viewers a reunion moment that may never exist in any other former fashion where Rick some version of Rick is reunited with Diane. [SPEAKER_04]: They both know each other. [SPEAKER_04]: They both remember each other.
[SPEAKER_04]: This isn't some fear whole situation like and and their love for each other is is apparent and it is it is it is an emotional scene when you think about it in that context and not just that there's like really graphic making out all of a sudden. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, but it's it's it's not a [SPEAKER_02]: It's not a purely sexual thing either. [SPEAKER_02]: It's like it's an earnest. [SPEAKER_02]: It's an earnest like they love each other. [SPEAKER_02]: They see each other.
[SPEAKER_02]: They found each other again. [SPEAKER_02]: I do have like just a quick thought, which is this is Rick's memory of Diana, which means that is memory of Diana. [SPEAKER_02]: is lonely, but as soon as she sees him, she'll be happy and want to be with him. [SPEAKER_02]: And not be mad at him, she'll want to be with him instantly. [SPEAKER_02]: So it's interesting that that his memory of him earlier is looking for a Diane the entire time and is going with every cost.
[SPEAKER_02]: It's going to pay every cost to find Diane and then his memory of Diane wants to be with him. [SPEAKER_04]: Well, quite a point of order. [SPEAKER_04]: This is bird persons. [SPEAKER_02]: Oh, that's right. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Thanks. [SPEAKER_02]: Thanks. [SPEAKER_02]: So, but still. [SPEAKER_04]: So yeah, it's yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: I think, I think, point.
[SPEAKER_02]: And, you know, by the by the end of it, they have a happy ending and like in in some ways, it is him. [SPEAKER_02]: coming to the, he's finding it, he's making it happy ending for them, right? [SPEAKER_02]: He's also making it happy ending for himself to say, I can, I need to move on, not just saying he wants to move on, not saying like not getting into this kind of like quasi. [SPEAKER_02]: Am I going to be in a relationship with Bug and or not?
[SPEAKER_02]: He's making determination. [SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to, I'm going to move forward. [SPEAKER_02]: I'm going to remember to speak, but I'm moving, moving on. [SPEAKER_04]: I'm giving them that and farm brain and an empty patch of space, right? [SPEAKER_04]: Like that is validation that somewhere in the universe in a small, small way, there is a Rick and a Diane that are together for it, right? [SPEAKER_04]: It won't exist in future episodes.
[SPEAKER_04]: It won't be something that Rick continues to kind of struggle with because in my opinion, I think this episode is designed to be an inflection point where Rick moves on from dying. [SPEAKER_04]: I think that's something that opens up a lot of different options from a storytelling perspective where he can go do other things. [SPEAKER_04]: attempt a relationship with other women or creatures or whatever he discovers in the multiverse.
[SPEAKER_04]: And so yeah, like I think this is kind of putting an end to the Diane story in a way and allowing it to exist out away from them with memory Rick. [SPEAKER_04]: So yeah, I don't know. [SPEAKER_04]: I thought I was really well done. [SPEAKER_04]: It was a cool way to do it. [SPEAKER_04]: And it was really interesting.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, there's some talk on the subreddit about like I somebody had said like I hope this advances a story opens up this story before the it's in the episode right but like in the live post and I said like I think I think it'll be happy I think it'll be happy for it because I think that's what it does right I don't think Rick will ever forget Diane but he [SPEAKER_02]: He is by giving memory Rick and Diane a happy ending.
[SPEAKER_02]: He is, he has created this narrative for himself that he could have a happy ending too. [SPEAKER_02]: And although, again, saw that he typed, hey, a couple hours ago, [SPEAKER_02]: They're, I go back and watch the episode when Rick porls out of the, the, the, the call is seeing him and bug game calls after him is like, Rick. [SPEAKER_02]: Like she is not happy that he is leaving. [SPEAKER_02]: She wants him to stay there too.
[SPEAKER_02]: But, you know, like she's a little, she's a little hurt. [SPEAKER_02]: He's moving on. [SPEAKER_02]: They're, they're figuring stuff out. [SPEAKER_02]: You may not end up, put her long term, but I think he's getting to the point where, and the story's getting to the point where he can move on. [SPEAKER_02]: And this, this allows that.
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, we we we talked a little bit about the the momentary death of space Beth and and then her coming back, but such a such an epic moment in this and really shocking like that was that was crazy to me.
[SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, but then [SPEAKER_04]: that all of the stages of, and this is, this is getting back to that, that Avengers moment, like you talked about where all of the different bests from, from childbirth, teenager, you know, like all of them were there to witness, Rick kind of being emotionally available to Beth.
[SPEAKER_04]: being a better dad and being there for her and like the healing that that that allows it to create across all versions of of best memories like I don't know there was something to me that I didn't catch the first time but the the second time I watched it and them all being there and seeing that they're like oh like he's he's a good dad why could we have this one like like he's [SPEAKER_04]: Um, which isn't, you know, true of Rick from all times, but I, it is taint in a little bit.
[SPEAKER_04]: Well, he then pulls out like if you're just painting her, but [SPEAKER_04]: It's still a sweet moment. [SPEAKER_04]: I thought it was and visually just like the the way that they drew those scenes and moved the virtual camera around to kind of pan so you can see everybody like it looked it just looked awesome. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, I kind of felt bad for our Rick at the end at the dinner table and they're like, what happened in memory Rick?
[SPEAKER_02]: He's like, he's gone and they all just like leaned went on in on him and like, I wish. [SPEAKER_02]: Well, I wish I had the nice Rick still or whatever. [SPEAKER_02]: What like would have said that a good version of you doesn't exist. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, and it's like, you know, like that's kind of that sucks for Rick because we know that he has done a good thing for memory Rick and every day on, but he's still kind of [SPEAKER_02]: sucks sucks it up.
[SPEAKER_02]: He like kind of does that martyr thing for him. [SPEAKER_02]: That's not the Scott martyr thing where he's like he is he is a good guy. [SPEAKER_02]: Our Rick is a good piece could be an asshole of course. [SPEAKER_02]: He can be a dump a horrendous piece of shit. [SPEAKER_02]: But he loves his daughter. [SPEAKER_02]: He loves his family. [SPEAKER_02]: He loves the memory of his dead wife. [SPEAKER_02]: And like he forgives himself.
[SPEAKER_02]: He wants himself to have a happy ending. [SPEAKER_02]: But no, his family doesn't see that at that dinner table at that moment. [SPEAKER_02]: And that's kind of like, that sucks, that sucks for him. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah, the the final thing I want to talk about and this is a fantastic part of the show is the music shout out to Ryan Elder who brought back a song from four seasons ago. [SPEAKER_04]: don't look back. [SPEAKER_04]: This is as it's written on Spotify.
[SPEAKER_04]: This is don't look back at Diane's version featuring Katomi and Ryan Elder. [SPEAKER_04]: And this was the same song that played at the end of season four when Rick was kind of [SPEAKER_04]: really kind of being ganged up on and beat up about the fact that like he didn't know which of his two clone daughters was the clone and which one was the real one.
[SPEAKER_04]: He had footage that like showed him like mixing them up and like [SPEAKER_04]: like keep your eye on the ball or like all this stuff like, and then just realizing what a terrible daddy was like he felt like a really terrible dad. [SPEAKER_04]: This is the same scene where we see that he has the pieces of Phoenix persons still still in his garage.
[SPEAKER_04]: But it's this song that plays, it's kind of depressing and it really is a kind of emphasizes Rick at a really low point in kind of just like his relationship with the family. [SPEAKER_04]: And over the course of the last four seasons now from season five to end of season eight, there has been a lot of progression. [SPEAKER_04]: And we talked about it numerous times on the show about the emotional development of these characters and Rick specifically.
[SPEAKER_04]: So for them to end this episode where he is sending off Diane with with memory Rick. [SPEAKER_04]: and this is kind of like a high moment for him like it's still sad it's still letting go of something but it's it's a more emotionally mature rick that is that is letting this happen and the mix of the song like it's [SPEAKER_04]: to me is more hopeful.
[SPEAKER_04]: It's more, um, I don't know, like it's, it's still kind of melancholy, but in, in a more, I don't know, hopeful way, I guess. [SPEAKER_04]: So yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: It's, yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: It's, it's great song. [SPEAKER_04]: It's in performed wonderfully and now available the stream on Spotify. [SPEAKER_04]: That's what you're into.
[SPEAKER_02]: Yeah, Mr. Elder reached out to us at the after the episode and I was like, hey, can you can you post a link to the YouTube where we're releasing this song? [SPEAKER_02]: So like shout out to Ryan Elder for hitting us up and making me pin a comment. [SPEAKER_02]: He made me. [SPEAKER_02]: He's like, Brandon, I will never talk to you again. [SPEAKER_02]: If you don't pin this come, anyways.
[SPEAKER_02]: Um, but yeah, so that I mean that that's that that's it that that it was such a good finale. [SPEAKER_02]: Um, it was a good up a good episode. [SPEAKER_02]: I think we and we talked talked about it like it was one of the. [SPEAKER_02]: We've been talking about Rick being emotionally mature like it was one of the most emotionally mature episodes of the show. [SPEAKER_02]: In my opinion, because it it had comedy right and like there was comedy stuff, but it was very.
[SPEAKER_02]: It didn't, I was, it was straight, I don't want to say it straightforward. [SPEAKER_02]: I don't know. [SPEAKER_02]: It just hit the mark as far as what a maturing show about a old scientist who fucks around with his grandson and takes him on like seeing adventures would do. [SPEAKER_02]: It's an evolution of it. [SPEAKER_02]: So I thought it was really good. [SPEAKER_04]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_04]: All right.
[SPEAKER_04]: I think that's probably going to that's going to be it for our thoughts on this episode, but that's definitely not the end of our discussion on on season eight or or anything really regarding this episode or anything else. [SPEAKER_04]: So please let us know we want to hear your thoughts Brandon is sending all of the artillery into into the camera. [SPEAKER_04]: But yes, please let us know what did you like?
[SPEAKER_04]: What did you dislike where there are things you didn't like about this episode? [SPEAKER_04]: How did you feel about the tone of the ending? [SPEAKER_04]: How did you feel about what this potentially means for future seasons? [SPEAKER_04]: I hit us up on all of the socials. [SPEAKER_04]: You can leave a comment if you're watching on YouTube.
[SPEAKER_04]: Just like [SPEAKER_04]: Joe Freaga did eight days ago, uh, getting into some listeners, suggestions and shortouts, shout out to Joe Freaga, who commented on the garbage portal episode, uh, with with a Morty daddy. [SPEAKER_04]: He says some other Easter eggs I noticed in trash land where there was either garbage goober or a creature of the same species. [SPEAKER_04]: Very very interesting. [SPEAKER_04]: He'd be in heaven. [SPEAKER_04]: I would think in a garbage imagine.
[SPEAKER_02]: There was a no because his wife didn't want him to eat garbage. [SPEAKER_02]: Trash. [SPEAKER_04]: I love Trash. [SPEAKER_04]: You're a doctor. [SPEAKER_04]: There was a ghost Rick created to tell Mr. Pobby but hold to leave the Smith house instead of telling him himself. [SPEAKER_04]: Oh, okay.
[SPEAKER_04]: I think this is when when Pobby but holes like Drunk and like crashing on their couch and I guess Rick created a ghost [SPEAKER_04]: to tell him Mr. Pumbo to move out, but I guess that's in there as well. [SPEAKER_04]: That's it. [SPEAKER_04]: That's that's a catch. [SPEAKER_04]: I wouldn't have gotten for sure. [SPEAKER_04]: And then there was either Randot Tron or Heistatron, not sure which one. [SPEAKER_04]: son of a bitch.
[SPEAKER_04]: I'm in which which was hilarious that that was the episode that was on the first night that we were at Comic Con. [SPEAKER_02]: That's right. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: And then of course shout out to a new Instagram follower Sarah chalk. [SPEAKER_02]: Thank you for for following us Sarah. [SPEAKER_02]: And I'm sure you're listening to this. [SPEAKER_02]: Yeah. [SPEAKER_02]: I'm sure I'm sure of it.

[SPEAKER_02]: Or a or a ghost writer. [SPEAKER_02]: Johnny Blaze. [SPEAKER_02]: Whatever. [SPEAKER_02]: Whatever.
[SPEAKER_02]: Whatever. [SPEAKER_02]: I do. [SPEAKER_02]: I do want to say one last thing Travis, but I do have a final thought before we get away from the episode season finale. [SPEAKER_02]: I am wearing, I know you're sleepy because I made you stay up to late. [SPEAKER_02]: I am wearing a shirt that I got for Father's Day this year. [SPEAKER_02]: It says cats in the cradle. [SPEAKER_02]: There's a cat with a spoon in a and a ladle.
[SPEAKER_02]: And at the bottom it says, when you come at home, dad, [SPEAKER_02]: I think this is a really good shirt to wear for the season finale, because in that this should have it, in that this should have it cats in the cradle. [SPEAKER_02]: When you come at home, Dad, don't know when we'll be together then, best. [SPEAKER_02]: We'll have a good time then. [SPEAKER_04]: That officially is an end to season eight.
[SPEAKER_04]: When we release another international RSS, we will be doing a holistic look at all of season eight. [SPEAKER_04]: Our favorite episodes, the ones that maybe didn't hit as hard. [SPEAKER_04]: And we'll finally revisit our predictions about the title sequence. [SPEAKER_04]: So you do not want to miss that whatsoever, make sure to remember. [SPEAKER_02]: I'll remember that. [SPEAKER_04]: Make sure you're locked in.
[SPEAKER_02]: and until then, I'm Travis and you know, I'll tell you what, I'm Brandon. [SPEAKER_02]: Bye.
