Episode description

It was another great performance for the Jayhawks this weekend, as they rolled Manhattan to set up a showdown with Kentucky on Tuesday night.

Transcript

Two wins, two blowouts, two ninety nine burgers put up by the Kansas Basketball Jayhawks, and now the schedule is about to get supper because up next is a showdown with the I think now we are we acknowledging Kentucky as the winningest program in college basketball history? Or is that not? Are we? We're not doing that shtick? Okay, gotcha? A showdown with the second winning his team in college basketball history looms here coming up for the Kansas Jayhawks.

This is Inside the Paint. It is a podcast on rockschalkflog dot Com. I am Ryan Landrich, I'm John Wick, and I am not a veteran, So one of you guys not a veteran. Yes, Happy Veterans Day. The Jayhawks put forth and perform an offensive performance today that would make the Japanese proud for World War two? Because of what the hell was that at the very end with anyone like oh no, Nick is Nick is just already going in the notes. Devin Neil through a pass today that didn't go

great Land and your fan was on really loud last podcast. I hope that's fixed, which is weird because I didn't have a fan in the room. So I'll do my best to fix that somehow. May have may you may have just been sitting right underneath a air conditioning vent or something like that. That's more likely because I know that you blast ac in your house when it's thirty four degrees outside. Right, Yeah, like I like it a nice

chili fifty in my house. For sure. Something's wrong with you, really, Nick, you were at the Jayhawks football game today to watch all thirteen points. That's seventy what eighty eighty six fewer than the basketball team scored the night before. Pretty unpleasant game. I'm sure what was your reaction when Devin Neil dropped back to pass on what would be the last offensive play of the

game for the Jayhawks. Oh, it was about It was that it was giving me flashbacks when Jason Bean overthrew his target and the millet and the bowl last year in Memphis looked very similar. Well, the jay Hawks are down to their third quarterback in football, so I mean, geez, Kevin mccoller is next up. I think that's how that works. Based on the way he's been throwing passes these last couple of games. That could that could work

out just fine. All right, let's talk about Kansas beating the biggest Burrow in New York and preview some some games. Let's talk about it. Number one Kansas ninety nine once again, Manhattan sixty one. It's not every day that the Jayhawks are a thirty six point favorite, not very often that anybody's a thirty six point favorite. But they covered great teams. Cover two wins, two covers for Kansas land and tell me or excuse me, mister Wick,

tell me about how this game went. Yeah, thank you. For the second game in a row, Kansas absolutely rolled an opponent from beginning to end. That the opponent offered much resistance, but it was impressive. Nonetheless, they needed less than fifteen minutes to build a twenty point advantage. They were also better in the second half against the Jaspers than they were against NC Central, as they scored fifty five second half points and wound up finishing with

ninety nine for the second straight game. As we mentioned, yeah, and all around performance. I don't think one that was quite as dominant as the NC Central one, but one that was extremely dominant. Nonetheless, Nick, what are your thoughts, big big picture thoughts? As Kansas does indeed destroy

another opponent that does not match up to their talent level. Yeah, I think that we've been hearing a lot of in the offseason about how Johnny Furfy is going to be this star freshman, and I think that was a little validated. I think the hope is now there. He had a great game. Like you said, we're gonna talk about him and I'd go ahead read the notes in a second, but fifteen points really exciting, standout performance from him. Glad to see that he's getting a little bit healthier from mis shin

splints he was having earlier. He's going to be a huge piece for this team. We were talking about them meeting a scoring presence, and I think that he could answer the call for that this year. Concerns about Nick Timberlake, though we talked about scoring early on the season. I know we're two games in. It might take a little bit to get transitioned from a thousand offense an opponent to Kansas, but I'm really concerned about, you know,

how that looks early to start this season. Overall, though, like you said, this team is really looking really polished offensively, particularly defense. You know, Bill, so I will probably say that the defense is terrible right now. But I think that, you know, guys got some good run in the second half, guys like Marco Jackson and like Landa's been talking about Jamary McDowell. So I think that that they're getting some good run and I'm

excited to see how this translated to Kentucky. But I certainly can't be displeased with how the first two by games went for Kansas well. And so my opinion is that Kansas was better beginning to end in this game than they were against North Carolina Central. The first half against n C Central was the best half they've played of the four, but from beginning to end, for forty

minutes, I think Kansas was a little bit better in this game. Ultimately, it's probably about the same because they scored the same number of points and the opener they allowed. What was the difference in points allowed. They gave up sixty one in this game and fifty six in the first one, so

about the same. It's really hard to get a grasp on just how good these guys are going to be whenever they're playing a full arsenal of minutes, because none of the starters, nobody for Kansas has played more than twenty six

minutes in a game. This year, they got one, two, three, four, five, six, seven, eight different players averaging between nineteen and twenty five minutes per game right now, so everybody's just getting this has been an optimal start for KU to roll these two teams to never trail, so you can experiment with these lineups. They're going to have another one in the game after this next one with Shamanad that I think you're gonna see everybody

play between eighteen and twenty six minutes. But other than that, there's a good chance that of Kansas's next four games, three of them are going to be against top fifteen powerhouses Kentucky, Marquette, Perdue, something like that, and the other one is gonna be Shamanad. So we're gonna have a pretty good grasp after the Maui Tournament. This team's gonna have at least three games against very quality opponents, and they're going to have three games against teams that

they should do very dirty things too. And I think at that point we'll be able to really properly analyze the stats. But for now, this is all we've got. What they did against the Jaspers. Landon, tell me about who I think I'm the one who writes these notes. I normally try to put the most important storyline at the beginning. We don't normally lead off with the player that came off the bench. But I think that Johnny Furfey aka the Wizard of oz or Ossi Aussi Aussi, as you've been saying,

the Kansas Kangaroo, is still my favorite. I think that's probably the biggest talking point coming out of this game. Yeah, Johnny Furfey, he was indeed really good. Finished second on the team with fifteen points, six of ten from the floor, three of seven from three, and is now five of nine from behind the arc in the first two games you played twenty minutes. Is this a product of playing two lassie teams, Nick or or is he really this good this early? I mean, it's way too early to

decide that. I don't know. I think the question, especially after like we just talked about them playing against two exhibitions to to by games. I think that I want to obviously want to see more of what he does for KU, but I am certain like you talk about how much hype he had in the off season, you know, secretly it sounds secret like secretly or at least it was coming out that he was really a standout player, at

least in practice. Obviously, like we know about he joined the team late and then had that injury, so there's kind of questions about, you know, how we'll fit into this offense. So I was certainly pleased with how quickly he was able to get his stride. I mean, the commentators talked about it, but he looks like a fifteen year old out there, so he really does. You can only be more excited about how how much he can mature in Bill Salves offense. But to go out there as raw as

he is and score fifteen points, I don't. I don't think there can be anything to be complaining about. So the sphe Makay look komp has brought up a lot with Furfey, who was admittedly brilliant in this game. I didn't think we'd see a fifteen point performance from him this early, and he's much better right now than I thought he would be. I think that he's probably he's clearly one of the five most talented players on this team. I

don't think he's going to be in college for years and years. I think he's got NBA talent, but just to kind of compare him to the guy he's been compared to the most. Spema Kailok, who came out of his freshman season where he was sixteen year old. He was sixteen years old. Speed scored ten points against Ryder in the third game. He scored eleven points against Michigan State in a championship game of a Thanksgiving tournament in which they won.

That was game six, and then just before Christmas, he scored eleven against Louisiana. So we had three double digit scoring games a non conference member. He was starting some of those games. He made five different starts before Christmas as a freshman, and then conference play happened and he stopped playing in conference play. That same year, Spema Kailak averaged six minutes per game, and that was just in the games he played it. He only played in

nine conference games. There were nine that he didn't even get in get on the floor for. So would Johnny Furfee playing minutes now and then see that decrease when the competition gets better stun me. It would surprise me more than it did with Fee, because this team isn't as deep as the that they've been in the past. I think Furfey's better right now than Spee was.

He's older, he's also had the injury problems the last few weeks, so he's probably actually a little bit behind where he otherwise would have been despite being this good. But I don't know. We saw this with Fee good early games, and then when the competition gets better, they utilize him less because of the non shooting parts of his game, being his inexperienced the defense, that sort of thing. What's a realistic number? How many minutes per game

is Johnny Furfey gonna play over the course this entire season? Is fifteen minutes per game? Realistic to ask for this guy who is at worst their eighth rotation player right now? Yeah, I think that depends. One. I think we're gonna find out a lot more on Tuesday of how much he's actually gonna fit into the real rotation. Two it might not be. I mean, now, again it's Manhattan and n C Central, but he does look

like a really natural shooter. Looks he looks a lot more comfortable also in this game than he did against n C Central, which that was a nice little thing to see from him. I don't know, I don't know if

fifteen minutes would be unreasonable. Like you said, I think that's primarily because of depth, because we've seen lots and lots of players play well against random non con opponent X, and then, like you said, you know, disappear or have that role go drastically down or never really hit that mark again. Come come conference play, come teams with a pulse, So who knows. But I mean a guy that can shoot potentially as well as furfy Can,

I would not be surprised if he plays more. Considering that great shooting guards are not like an abundance on this team. Shooting in general has been a lot better. Once again, we saw quality three point shooting for Kansas that made ten threes ten for twenty six that's thirty nine percent. They did have a couple from Mike Jankovic, but then again, the walk Ons hurt the numbers in the first game, so it's only fair that they helped the

numbers here. Kansas also shot sixty eight percent on two point shots through two games. Kansas one of the best offensive teams in college basketball. Admittedly, you know we know who they're playing. The two lousy not with the exception of shamanad maybe the two worst teams they're going to play this entire season.

But for what it's worth, Kansas so far sixty three percent from the floor, that's second nationally, seventy three percent on twos that's third nationally, and averaging even I don't need a calculator to tell me they're averaging ninety nine points per game. Nick, coming into the season, the three point shooting was thought to be the team's biggest weakness. Well, they've gone out there and they've made what like twenty two to twenty three threes in two games, just

to sample size. That's small against lowsy opponents. Or are you a little more confident than you were at the start of the year that this team may be good enough shooting the ball? Not there yet, and we'll talk about why. I mean, I already alluded to it earlier that I'm still not super I'm still a little worried about Nick Timberlake and how long it's gonna take for him to sell into this offense. That's definitely gonna be on the up, I think. But yeah, I mean, you look at the first

two games. You know there's percentage is probably gonna be a little bit higher against the worst teams are going to play off season, especially defensively. But yeah, I mean especially I think it calmed the concerns a little bit after the Fort Hayes State exhibition and the Illinois exhibition with the shooting was pretty rough. But I mean, like it's basketball. Shots are going to fall and sometimes they're not, and that's something that can easily be improved. It's other

fundamentals that maybe aren't as easy to change. But I think that this team is definitely gonna It's only gonna go up, especially if you have guys like Johnny Furfy Hero contributing. So let's talk about Hunter Dickenson, somebody who we did not have any questions about coming into the season. Eighteen points and eight rebounds in just twenty minutes, another stuff the box score night for him.

Two nights in a row he has put up insane efficiency numbers. He was seven to fourteen from the floor, which is every one of his shots besides one being a two. In case that there wasn't anything else about his game that we were drooling over at the start of the season, He's also four for four from three now this year in forty four minutes so far. Dickinson

has thirty nine points and sixteen rebounds. You project that out to the twenty nine to thirty thirty one ish minutes per game that we think he's gonna get in conference play and Landon, I think we may have aimed about right whenever we said twenty points a game, nine ten rebounds a game. This guy pretty much. I don't think there has been a true box score stuffer like him since Wayne Simeon. Clearly shaping up to be one of the best offensive

seasons in Kansas basketball history, especially under Bill self. And you haven't seen anything in these two games that would indicate otherwise. Uh, he's certainly gonna score a lot. I actually do have one probably wild nitpick, Okay, but I do have one tiny little concern about Hunter Dickens. Don't you say his shoes there one red shoe and one blue shoe, is darn cool. I didn't actually even notice that at all, So no, that's not a problem. It's pretty neap. They're big shoes, by the way, he's

a big guy. That's true. I should have noticed them. They do take up a lot of screen space. Huge. But my one tiny nitpick is that Hunter Dickinson does not like he I'm sure he has the ability to, and I've seen him have the ability to, but it is a little concerning that he doesn't necessarily like create his own space and get to his own spot on his own if that makes any sense. Like, I'm sorry, Landon, you were making the best basketball analysis this show is gonna have.

And Nick is boasting hilarious poop posts, and it is true that's upsetting you raise you raise valid points on how we're not as a society where we thought we'd be fifty years ago by this point. Uh. And it talks about how it's a it's a it's an article of ESPN Southwest Florida, which makes all the sense in the world. Why this is the take coming out of

the Sunshine State. Continue trying to make any real basketball point on this, which land And I assume, I assume that back to your point that you're not super duper concerned whenever Dwan Harris is his point guard, it's gonna create lots of shots for him. But continue on it is it is something worth noticing. He's not a pass the ball at the top of the key and he there go, there you go. He's gonna go get his own shot. Yeah, certainly. Yeah, the way this team moves the ball,

he's gonna get plenty of dunks and layups. But it is even when he gets the ball in the post, he often doesn't do too much with it other than maybe turn and then attempt his his hook shot, which again is a very makeable shot for Hunter Dickinson. That's not horribly low percentage, but it definitely feels like against these two teams especially, he would have the opportunity to get even better position and get an even better attempt than that hook shot.

And I'm not exactly sure why he's not, or why he's just catching and shooting even in the paint, uh, pretty much every time. Again, a lot of that's dunks and layups because he's been set up very well. But it's just a little thing. Who knows. It's just interesting to see what that looks like against better competition. If I had you guess right now his season ending line. I'm trying to find dedrich Lawson's stats at ku

didrich Lawson has a Jayhawk nineteen points and ten rebounds. Good lord over under those numbers for Dickinson, I'd probably go slight under just because I think mcculler's gonna grab a lot of boards, and I think this team's gonna have a lot of capable scorers. Not sure what you're talking about. That team has spectacular season. That team had Quinton Grimes and Charlie Moore just filling up the box scorer. So I don't know. I don't know what you're talking about.

Wayne Simeon's last season at Kansas averaged twenty and eleven. Just is absurd. Yeah, just the No, I don't either. But one thing that I think Dickinson's better at than Simeon is three point shooting. Wayne Simeon only attempted fourteen threes, and he only made four threes as a senior, and Dickinson's got that in two games. Who would win if Manhattan played North Carolina Central? Nick, What do you think he taken? What was the question?

Yeah? I next too busy asking questions and which fair? Which is very funny. I hadn't thought about that person in a while. I haven't thought about that person. It's it's very bad. If you open up the notes right now, all you're gonna see is basically this with a little not abnormal. No, it's not with a little bit of on the side, Nick, who would win if Manhattan played North Carolina Central? Probably North Carolina Central by I'm gonna I'm gonna say five points. Really, I mean it

would be a close game. I think, man, I think Manhattan's better than in C Central that first half? For side? Do Traior alone? Who actually is I think a very good basketball player? Yeah? Yeah? Was he the white dude that made a couple of threes? Just why not?

No, he's another guy that did some things. I saw a big, a big, dorky looking white center splash in a couple of threes just for just get ready for Kentucky. That guy's name said, do Traior, fair point, but just wait for Reed Shepherd, who's coming up for the Kentucky Wildcats. Wait do you see what he does? Want to kJ Adams, Nick, I need you to focus off of what you're typing and tell me about kJ Adams. That's so yeah, j should be better than it

is. I'm sorry to all you listeners, all six of you. I'm sorry. kJ Adams is excellent, especially early on, going seven for eight from the floor and finishing with fourteen points in twenty one minutes. His only miss was a pull up jumper. He added five rebounds a couple of blocks. Dickinson, McCuller, and Purphy and Harris are getting all the attention, but Adams is quietly should a lot of improved in his two games. Yeah,

there's a lot of dunks from him in this game. Lennon, are you are you excited early on this season how much he's improved in his career, in his already at Kansas or what are you looking forward to? Yeah, I mean I think he's been really good. I think I think the great value but without shooting Zion Williamson comp remains pretty good. He is a little bit Draymond greenish in his undersized big man kind of way. Kay Draymond

Green, Yeah, something like that. I mean, the man dunks the basketball, which is a very hard thing to do in the half court set, and he is a guy that can do it with a lot more ease than a lot of guys. So that's a very valuable trait. Yeah, I mean, we liked k J. Adams as a freshman even I think I think we were all thought he was at least an interesting player someone we

wanted to see more. Or I don't think any of us really thought he would become like this, But it's nice to see and it's definitely credit to Bill self credit in the program. As always, they can develop players really well. You know, he's not gonna be able to dunk on Baylor like he can dunk on Manhattan, but you know, to have a guy like that to pair with Hunter Dickinson, that's gonna be a nightmare matchup for a lot of guys, for a lot of teams to have two very capable scores

as you're four and five that can actually play in the post. Legitimately, Yeah, kJ Adams is he's just so under the radar. He's so easy to forget about when you're talking about what makes this team so good. But he is such a pivotal piece because he's such a good passer. When you're four, man is as good as a passer as just about anybody else on the floor. Boy, does that open stuff up. He's not a ballhog. He doesn't try to do too much. We see him Noh's role.

He had to pull up j which was his only one that he missed. Like that's about as far outside of his game as he's gonna go. He and Zach Clemens came in together, and I thought for sure that kJ was gonna transfer after his freshman year because I thought he was always gonna behind Clements.

This is a major testament to Kj's ability to play different positions and Bill Sale's ability to get creative that they found a role for kJ Adams that they Otherwise we haven't seen them have this sort of player role that they've made work. Was we were skeptical if it would work last year, and it was really good. kJ went as our KU went as kJ went last year. When he disappeared, k you struggled last year, averaging four rebounds a game

this year five and two games in limited minutes. If he ups his rebounding numbers from a season ago, considering who he's playing next to in the front court, boyd, is that set a huge precedent for improvement there. He shoots a high percentage from the floor, he doesn't turn the ball over very much. That's what KAU needs from their starting for you know what we talk

about Dewan Harris. He needs to just kind of pass the ball, not shoot a lot, and play solid defense and everybody else is gonna cook. That's kind of what we need kJ Adams to do as fans of this team, and he's so good at playing within his own abilities. I think he's going to quietly put up one of the most under the radar twelve points, six rebounds, sixty five percent from the floor sort of seasons. Uh, and Kay was gonna win a lot of games with him making huge, huge

plays in all of their wins. Uh. Blocks blocks was weird. Kansas nine blocks in this game and they all came in the first half. There's not a lot to take away there because they're playing a small Manhattan team, But I just thought that was kind of weird and kind of interesting. So I put in the notes because that's what I do. It is and I don't know how to analyze it because that's what I do. So it's like

the most block since the Jeff with the era. Yeah, it feels like it like they have they have They really haven't had a dominant shot blocker since what I mean Lightfoot was their best shot blocker of the last several years. I guess Doke was pretty good at it. As a Sceneke was a rim protector in a different way. He didn't get a lot of raw blocks,

but he was extremely intimidating. Do you remember Udoka turning into like a legitimate Jeff with the shot blocker like the last twelve games of his college career, like it came out of nowhere. I don't because all I remember is sadness from the end of his career. Yeah, that was. It was quite sad. So I'm looking at the numbers here. Udoka as a bouquet in conference play in the twenty nineteen twenty twenty season, averaged more than three blocks

per game after being a guy. Yeah, it came out of nowhere because the rest, Like I'm looking at his block numbers, the entire first three years of his career combined, which was fifty six games, he averaged fewer than one. He averaged one point six blocks per game. Then the second half of his senior year it doubles to over three. So rarely, with the exception of that last seventeen eighteen games from Udoka, Ku hasn't had a dominant shot blocker since uh is it? With each geez? It can't be

that long? Is with me? The last dominant shot blocker besides Dope cross It I mean with the is also a weird one because he was one of the most dominant shot blockers. If he is statistically the most dominant shot blocker in the program history, Am I right? Other than Will he's the most dominant shot blocker in Big twelve history. Yeah, he still to this day

has the NCAA tournament record for blocks in a single postseason. That is why he should be on the north wall of allen Fieldhouse Aldridge was he said, Oh, Jeff for a while, remember that because he cheated on his attractive wife, who kind of I think turned out to be kind of crazy with a playmate girlfriend, which probably also was kind of crazy that happens. Who who had more blocks for Kansas, Nick Collison or Eric chenilwith I'm assuming because

you're asking that question, it's not the most obvious answer. Yeah, probably chenn with Yeah, yeah, no, call uson by one. Callson had two hundred and forty three blocks. Chennewth had two hundred and forty two. They're the fifth and sixth most players with the most blocks in Big twelve history. Where's with the with the's one with three hundred and eleven. Jeff the all time Jeff Withe is the all time leading shot blocker in Big twelve history,

and he played two damn years at Kansas. Basically, yeah, he's that is wild insane. He's the best shot blocker I've ever seen, which is why once again his name should be retired. He's the best defensive player

in the history of the Big Twelve, truly. Like I I remember I was in college when Jeff Withie was here, and teams would seriously, like there was a non conference game where a team shot like six twos the whole night against Kansas, they just quit going inside because Jeff Withie would make anything inside the arc was seen as impossible with him because he would gobble up every misshot and he would block half of the misses too. Dickinson, do you

remember him blocking a couple of threes. Yeah, I remember even at the time being like, I've never seen another person do that before. I think Dickinson did that in this game. I think that Dickinson blocked a three at the very beginning of this game. Yeah, he got a piece and Hunter Dickinson is averaging almost two blocks game in his career. He had his best shot block year last year at Michigan, so he's pretty good. Like you,

you averaged two blocks per game that's elite shot blocking. He's also seven too, so he's gonna run into a few of them. He's probably, I mean, because Kansas had Yeah what what Nick just said? Nick Collison, Carle Aldrich, Jeff with the all those guys played in the twenty in the early two thousands, early twenty or in the two thousands and early twenty tens, really haven't had one since Doke for a little bit. We'll see if Dickinson can be that guy. Okay, we kind of got off track.

Let's talk about some of the other guards that we don't have a lot to analyze here, But Nick, go ahead read me their stats. Yeah, let's round this out here. You know, Dwan Harris two points on one for four shooting, five assists, twenty four minutes. Kayu has had one hundred and ninety eight points in two games, and he had two of them. Wow. So wasn't there a common after the first game that he said it is I'll shoot it when I need to yea And he certainly didn't

need to in these games. And then al Marco Jackson nine points, ten assists, ten assists, wow, twenty nine minutes, three for six on the floor. Yeah, I was stunned. I watched the half of this game at a bar and grill, so I really wasn't paying attention too much after they just started rolling. But I looked down at the box score after the game and saw al Marco had ten assists. They were thinking, what really he did? Wow? I mean, he's he was a point guard

in high school. Like he can He's he's Bill Self's dream combo guard, kind of Mario Chalmers like he played the one and the two. Nine points was nice to see. He played a team high twenty nine minutes in this game. Nick Timberlake, who I don't even think I put his stats in here, which is a problem. Then we pull those up real quick, did not the best showing for him after he took a step back after a

good start in this game. Just scored two points, missed all three of his threes, played nineteen minutes, did have five rebounds, but also turned the ball over three times. I'm gonna ask you this every single show until we have a clear cut answer. Would you start on Marco Jackson or Nick Timberlake or Johnny Furphy if he's in there now, certainly after this game, it's gotta be Al Marco. Yes, it's always been al Marco. Al

Marco is better at everything except for shooting threes than Nick Timberlake. Yeah, that is probably true. And in al Marco Jackson hit one in this game. It was meaningless, but he did hit it. He hit yep. Yeah, at least it wasn't an air ball, which is nice. I have high, high hopes for al Marco Jackson being essentially a kJ Adams player at the two. Like I think he's gonna do a little bit of everything. He's a smart player, high basketball IQ for a freshman, plays really

good defense, pretty good handles for a freshman. Normally that's kind of a rough Remember Keante George, best point guard in the Big Twelve last year, came in and couldn't stop turning it over at all early. So not uncommon for highly rated recruits to come in play point guard in this conference and struggle. Al Marco taking care of the ball pretty well. He's he's got to be the two guard at this point in time, he just has to be. Okay, Landon, let's talk about Kevin mccullar as we kind of wind

down this recap. Another good showing for dare I say Kansas as best player. I don't know if we're there yet, but I'm kind of close to saying it. Yeah, I've I was kind of close to saying that before the season even started. He was really good again, pretty quite in the second half, but that was more so because all the start were pretty quiet in the second half because they didn't play a ton. Mccullor finished with fifteen

points, five of nine shooting. He was one to five from three, was four or four from inside the arc, had seven rebounds, four assists, two steals. A couple of his passes were absolutely unbelievable, including the transition opportunity where we had a behind the back jebble into a beautiful assist. The combination of he and Harris, they possessed one of the highest basketball IQ's in the country combined, and they also can defend the crap out of the

basketball. They I said it last year, I'll say it again. Probably the best defensive duo that I've seen at Kansas, And if they can also score and make plays the way that they have so far, that is maybe just one of the best duos in college of basketball if any regard, certainly for guards. It's two it's one of the best I've seen at Kansas.

Marcus Garrett and Udoka az A Bouquet playing alongside each other was pretty disgusting as far as a defensive duo down This SAT's true, but yeah, this is nuts and Jackson's very good defensively as well as good as his team's been on offense. Defense is probably their best overall trade. Like we knew they were gonna lock down teams defensively, Kentucky's gonna be real interesting. A very inexperienced but talented team that doesn't shoot the ball real well, gonna have to create

some open shots. Not gonna be very easy against Kansas. We'll see how that goes. Mccullor might be the smartest player I've ever seen play KU Like he's just there's not a weakness. There's not a weakness in the guy's game. Like Kevin McCuller would absolutely be on an NBA roster right now if he had gone pro last year. He's not gonna be Steph Curry in the NBA, but he would absolutely have a spot on an NBA roster right now.

Yeah, you think, especially with his increased shooting ability, he would at least get a shot like you tell me, the Hornets couldn't use Kevin mccullor. Yeah, exactly. He's just good at everything. The thing he's worst at is probably a shooting at this point, and that looks immensely improved. Like he's just an excellent He feels like a Marcus Garrett type in the sense

that he can play all the positions. Like you're telling me, if Dickinson got three fouls and Parker Brown's banged up, they couldn't throw McCuller down to play the five for a few minutes. I bet he could. Like he in his passing ability in IQ is so good. He can absolutely play point if he needs to as well. Yep, And I got a couple of tweaks of people bringing up what I said about mccullar last year. Early in

the season, I questioned if McCuller should start. Make no mistake that Kevin McCuller and this Kevin mccullar are very very different players, and that Kevin McCuller we never said he shouldn't should never play. Just wondered if if kabrin him off the bench could be the best thing for the team. He obviously disproved that over the rest of the season. He played better as the season went along, and now he's one of that. He's on pace to be a

first team All Big twelve player. All right, let's wrap this up. Parker Brown added ten points off the bench. He's now nine for nine on Tues this year after making all four of his In this game, he played seventeen minutes. He's playing healthy minutes through two games. Expect that to go down against Kentucky. Dickenson's got to play close to thirty in that game. You think. Jamari McDowell made his season debut by scoring five points and grabbing

six rebounds. Quality stat line there in fourteen minutes, and Mike Jenkovic said a career high with two may threes, six points for him. Dylan will Heights scored three points, the first points of his Kansas career. If you bet the over on the walk on prop you got nine in this game, which is pretty good. That gets you a third of the way there in this game by itself. Kansas fifty seven percent from the floor, thirty nine

percent from three to eighty one percent of the line. Something we haven't talked about. They've been a very good free throw shooting team over eighty percent in each of their first two games. On the glass they were plus thirteen, did turn it over fourteen times, but whenever you're playing really fast, it's gonna happen a little bit more. Overall, really good showing. They've had

two tests. They've passed them both easily. Not a whole lot that we wanted to see that they haven't shown us, and now the schedule is going to get a lot tougher. Any closing thoughts on Kansas being two to zero through two games, Like, like we said after the first game, it's not the highest quality of opponent, but they have dominated both these opening games. The ball movement looks really good. The overall team IQ looks really good.

They've been doing a lot of things really well, and the shooting has looked a lot better. And I think they're doing a lot of things that will translate two tougher opponents. Well, it's not just because they're playing bad teams that they've looked good. I think they are a very very quality team and I think that's going to continue. Nick. Any ending thoughts here, I think we pretty much covered I promise sing first two non conference games especially

when come out of the exhibition gaming. It's for hay State, you know, with some questions, particularly about how this team's going to score, they could squash those two nine to nine point performances. Can't go really wrong there. I'm pleased and I'm excited to see how things translate to Kentucky on Tuesday. I gave you a little premature airhorn there. Never want the premature version, and you can have the full thing. Other games, well, actually

first Big twelve games. It was a little better week for Big twelve teams this week, but mainly because the schedule got a lot softer, as despite being down by nine and a half time Number twenty, Baylor got a legendary debut from freshman Jacoby Walter to help them storm back and beat Auburn at the Sioux Falls Pentagon eighty eight eighty two, and their opener, Walter scored twenty eight points, including ten for ten at the free throw line. Welcome to

college. Looks like he's going to be the leader in the same Baylor offense we've seen under coach Drew. They take a lot of threes, they play real fast, very very good shooting the ball. Their defense has been what's done him in the last couple of years. So we'll see how that goes. But at least in this game, entertaining comeback win for them. They look to have a very good offense. Are they KU's biggest competition in the Big twelve? I think they are probably unless TCU is like really good state.

Neither one of the teams you listed is Houston. You guys aren't buying that one in their adjustment year or Houston. I forgot about Houston. They're pretty good go I just think I think we've talked about on this show. It wouldn't surprise me at all if Houston had like an eleven and seven or ten and eight season as they get acclimated to Big twelve environments, which is also probably fair. There's someone every year that does it. It might be

this team Iowa State. They beat a team called lynden Wood who used to be D two. They're moving up to D one forty seven. Linden Wood made six two pointers all night and had almost twice as many turnovers twenty two as they had made baskets at thirteen, Nick, would you schedule Lyndenwood or would you schedule a real team? I would schedule Santa Claus State. Seriously, what is the point? We asked this every single show with these teams. And also we've seen, we've read some scary stat lines, right,

we've we've heard the note they had almost as many baskets as turnovers. Have you ever seen nine more turnovers than baskets? Probably based on the sport we cover, but I don't know, it would have been gross. Now I want Nick, I want you to read me Iowa States remaining non conference opponents because there's going to be a time on the show in January where we're getting ready to start Big twelve play and we see, wow, Iowa States eleven and one and in the top twenty five. Could they be a team that

challenges for a top five Big twelve placement? And I'm going to point back to you reading this list right now that tells us how they got to an unblemish or darn close non conference rate. Yeah, they get to that eleven and one non conference finish because they're like, oprah, get you get one hundred thousand dollars by game, You get one hundred thousand dollars by game.

Because this is the list. Idaho State, Grambling State, VCU getting Kansas and playing them De Paul, Iowa at home, Prairie View A and M at a real school, Florida A and M Eastern Illinois and New Hampshire, and Iowa State lost to Florida A and M in the COVID year. The Steve Prome team that won two games the two and twenty one Iowa State Cyclones. They've already won as many games this year as they did last that one year. That's true. That's an atrocious list. And remember they've already beat

Green Bay and linden Wood. Well something else that has exactly as many wins as Iowa State had that year. As Ernest doo Day, he has exactly two points through his first two games with the TCU Horny Frogs. He did have eleven rebounds though, in their blout win over Omaha on Thursday night, so that's a little better. He's the starting center, would him? He is the starting center for a frend's top twenty five team. He's gonna have

a really good year. The center in Jamie Dixon's offense has always been really good. We've seen guys like Kevin Samuel put up nice numbers. I can't think of some of the recent guys they had, Well, Eddie Lampkin was there and he was a pretty impact player. Feels like that they always have a guy that kind of fits that mold and Ernest doo Day getting starter minutes to play at to play at TCU. Nick, tell me about the other team in Purple in this conference. Yeah, the TCU Horned Frogs or no,

we just talked about that. Yeah, Stay, I had him, I had a I had a mental. I had a moment. They only beat by eight point eighty three to seventy five. Tyler Perry, not the actor, scored eighteen points for the Wildcats. Who doesn't play anybody good until December? Shocker. They clearly aren't looking great through two games. You know, they lost to Bronnie James or Bronnie James didn't play. I guess they lost to USC Is this a team that's gonna finish in the top five in

the conference? To top five? Is so a Medilla NCAA tournament? Yes, okay, top seven? Are they going to finish in the top half of the conference. See, that's that's where this gets harder, because top five used to be real easy. Are they a top half of the league team now top five is basically top third. No, I don't think they are. I think they're around seven probably. I think they're more likely to be eight to ten than in the top seven. Well, and they have

a really good point guard, Parry's a stud. We think they have a good coach, and they have a great home court advantage. Like they're a team that's absolutely gonna win like seven home games. Like they're gonna go like seven and two at home or something like that, but the road games are gonna be tough. They play Providence coming up, South Dakota State, either

Georgia or Miami. Miami is a top fifteen team and they play in a tournament the Bahamas over Thanksgiving here coming up, and then Central Arkansas, Oral Roberts, Northern Alabama, Villanova at home. They're ranked right now LSU, Nebraska in Whichita State, and Chicago State, who might be the worst basketball team ever based on what they always do. So, yeah, they're gonna

have like a ten and three non conference record or something like that. But could they be a ten and three non conteam that then starts one to four in Big twelve play? Yeah, absolutely could be something like that. Two Big twelve teams lost this week. Central Florida went down to aforementioned Number thirteen Miami by sixteen in a game that wasn't and West Virginia, Oh my goodness, gracious, what in the world is going on here? West Virginia lost

to Monmouth at home as a fifteen point favorite. Monmouth is the alma mater of the uh George Pappas and his don't give an f statement that was a few years ago. That popped up in my time hop the other day. But whenever we're talking about West Virginia, they have an interim coach, they're missing three of their top six rotation guys. Kirk Rees is out to so

this team is a complete freaking mass. They feel like a seam that's destined to go like three and fifteen or something like that in Big twelve play. But fellow newcomer Byu did pull off a nice home win over number seventeen San Diego State seventy four to sixty five on Friday night. None of us think b YU is gonna be very good. I think they're gonna be a little case State like though in the sense that it is tough to play at that

arena. They're gonna get some top twenty five wins at home in this conference. Nigg, are you trying to type out the entire Big twelve state? Yeah, Daly, well k State laws so they're not tied for one zero though. Oh Nick is riding every Big twelve team out. Uh. And the order is at you go in alphabetical order, because this is pretty impressive. Oh no, now we went to in the order of my mind. Okay, well, yeah, what do we got now? One, two, three, four, five, six, seven, four? More Oklahoma

schools? You're missing? Oh, you and Oklahoma State, which no one cares. And then you're missing who else is? Who else isn't there? Is there anybody else there? Who's he missing? There? You go? No? Uh, geez, why why can't we name all the Big twelve schools? What the heck's going on here? Guys? Did you write West Virginia? That's it, write West Virginia and let's mercifully move on from this

Other games Number twelve Arizona. They are a big winner of the week as the Wildcats went into Cameron Indoor, which has been renamed Kleb Love Stadium, and took down number two Duke seventy eight seventy three, a very balanced Wildcats team. All five scorers scored between eleven and fourteen points, including Caleb Love,

who continued his ownership over the Blue Devils. Coach K brought his rat face back in the Cameron Indoor where we all remember Caleb Love giving Coach K his final home loss and ending his career with that dagger shot in the NCAA tournament. And then what does Kleb Love do? He contributes to John Schier's first home loss as duke coach, the loser of next week's Michigan State Duke Champions Classic game, originally pegged as two top five teams will begin their season

one and two. Eh. Speaking of Champions Classic, hey go look too, it will not be one and two. Number sixteen Kentucky. They got to a terrible start. They tilled Texas and m Commerce. That's a real school guys, twenty one to eight out of the shoot. But they got their act together and one by twenty they like Kansas or two and zero heading into Tuesday night, but they struggled on the glass and the three point shooting, save for Antonio Reeves, looks to be an issue again for the Wildcats.

Yeah, Kentucky's a weird team. Like this Kentucky team is nowhere near what we think they're going to look like in March. I think they could be quite good at the end of the year. But right now, boy, they got a big task with Kansas. So I have questions about Duke and Kentucky and Michigan State too. Let's talk about the champions classic teams. Concerned about all of them. I'm not really that concerned about Duke. I think they're young, or at least I think the pieces that messed up in

this game are young. Not huge on John Shire, though I do like him scheduling tougher, opponents love them losing in front of coach k I think they'll ultimately be fine. Michigan State that just doesn't feel like something that's supposed to happen to title contenders, and Kentucky's gonna have some problems. Yeah, I think it's about right. I think I think out of the other three not named Kansas, I think Duke is probably going to be the best.

I think Kentucky, based on talent, might have the higher ceiling, but I definitely think they also have the lowest floor and Yeah, I think Michigan State will do what tom Izzo teams do and be way better in February than they are in November. But that's still a hilarious loss that you absolutely cannot

take. So I think that's about right. And I think Kansas is probably by far the best of the four Perdue probably moving from three to two in the top twenty five pole considering that they took down are considering that Duke lost in front of them, which means if Kansas beats Kentucky and we could head into that Maui tournament week with one Kansas and two Perdue being the projected championship for that Mali tournament. Also, Marquette's going to be three in the poll.

Kansas could seriously play three Marquette and two Perdue in the last two games of that Maui tournament. That is going to be ridonculous. But yes, Arizona very impressive. They should be in the top five. If you had a top five ballot right now, what would you say, Oh, I don't know. Too early for the basketball games I've watched, is the end of Michigan State, James Madison, Kansas and c Central and Kansas Manhattan,

So I would probably say definitively Kansas Purdue in Arizona, maybe Arizona. Honestly, I mean, they're pretty good. And that's the top three. That's the top three. You know who's not It's not Louisville, but we'll talk to them. We'll talk about that in a minute. Maybe Tennessee though Land and tell me about our buddy Rick. Yeah, they got a nice win

in Madison at the Cole Center, beating Wisconsin eighty to seventy. If this exact game took place in March, the volunteers would have lost because Rick Barnes. And also if this game took place in March, my guess would be the score would be more like fifty four to fifty. Also getting a nice road win was the fifteen Texas and m who won in Columbus against the Buckeyes. Nop, there goes our rotation. Well, I know what we're doing here. Here's your return. I think Nick read the Kentucky one. It's

oh we switched am I after you. Now, that's what we had just done. Sweet okay, that's what they were singing with their fku to mister bright Side chance in the first half because they led Memphis twenty nine to fifteen through fourteen minutes and their fans were like whoo. And then all they did the rest of the game was get out scored by twenty nine points over the last twenty five minutes. Missouri gets crushed at home by the Tigers by fifteen.

Yuck. Not a great look for Dennis Gates in his first Marquee game of year two. Yeah, now it's my turn to read. Gotcha? Zach Eti had eighteen points, eight rebounds, three blocks, and three assistans. Number three Perdue beat more head State. Man. I thought I read that too. I thought I was gonna get somebody there. Never never guess what that joke's about. What a what a horrible name for a school?

More? What about emmy? I'm right there with you, or you know, I mean, I think Josh liked me a little bit more after the penies. I'm sure that's true. Daniel forgot about that. I can't believe that's on the sound word. Now, Who's next? Is it? You? Now? Yeah? It is? I get one thing to say, so I'm gonna take both. Number ten Florida Atlantic beat Loyola Chicago on the road. Ryan only thinks this is relevant because f sister Jeane I had a

statement I do not stand by at all. She's still alive. Come on already, like give it up. Something else that should be given up is maybe Louisville's basketball program. They lost to Chattanooga. They were only a four point favorite in the first place, which is really bad, but they didn't even they didn't even get that done. Since January eighth of twenty twenty two, guess what Louisville's record is. I don't even know the answer to this.

Ryan calculated this. I think it's like, I don't know what the loss can would come to, but I'm pretty sure it's only like eight or nine wins. So a little bit of a setup for this. Louisville was a top ten team when the season got canceled with COVID three years ago, and then the twenty twenty one team was one of the last couple teams that missed out on the nca tournament. They were almost in. Then twenty twenty

two's team starts ten to four. They had a good start, they're on pace to maybe make the NCAA as an at large, and then overnight, seemingly the floor dropped out since then. That was the day Kansas and Remy Martin lost to Texas Tech in KU's very first conference loss of their national championship season, almost two calendar years ago. What is Louisville's record? How many total games it is out of fifty two games seven and forty five, eight

and forty four. Landing is correct. Eight and forty four are the Louisville Cardinals. Just for fun, let's read the eight teams they've beaten. The UNBC Terriers just the other day. Georgia Tech, Clemson, Florida and m Western Kentucky. Georgia Tech again, Clemson again, Boston College. That's your list, man. Imagine being of Louisville's victories in the last two years,

which just absolutely awful. Not to be outdone by Louisville's terribleness. Georgetown lost the Holy Cross at home as a ten point favorite, and Notre Dame lost to Western Carolina at home by ten. Yeah, that's Mike Bray's still there and he was supposed to retire than he did it. Maybe that's terrible.

So I think that Georgetown and Louisville should play at halftime of the NCAA championship game, like how they let that special Olympics kids play like a fifteen minute segment like you can bet on now as we And then I learned that an hour ago. So okay, Mike Bray left and is working on Quinn Snyder's staff with the Atlanta Hawks. Something that I didn't he about. Who is Notre Dame's basketball coach? It is, uh Mike Shrewsberry is his name?

He kind of looks like I know that name from somewhere. Who is that guy? Well, he is the basketball coach at Notre Dame. He was an assistant at Penn State. Also was a long time Boston Celtics assistant under Brad Stevens. Not looking they're not having Celtics level success in his in the early part of his tenure. It looks like and number twenty two Villanova beat a team called Lemoyne l E E Space m y n E once again. How do these games get to count? Because Villanova struggled the last couple of

years and they like to win at all. Ye Hey, they play at brambletch here in a few weeks ranked team salu s it's the last show number two duke Haha, lost to Arizona Home and number seventeen San Diego State. They lost to the b YU Cougars. Landon, You're already in outright last place by multiple games and pick them and we've only done two shows, Like it's just it's all the rock always sinks. That just gives me more time to mount an epic comeback, only to blow it again. Yeah, that's

true. Landon is absolutely going to be eight games in first place in late February and wind up losing somehow, because that is always, and I do mean always, how this goes? Where's the airhorn? That has been the trend to this point? Forgot about Mary? But they beat Stanislaus, so

they can always they can. They can definitely stayna Gonna keep using that drop until Gonzaga's record streak ends because it's so totally undeserved and they're about to get the record for most consecutive conference titles one because Kansas has ended at thirteen. Ask Rock Chuck blog, do you ever have questions? You can go to X and ask us questions X. It's all the context you get. Imagine hearing that a year ago, how confused would you be? I would have

been concerned that Twitter had become a porn site exclusively. That's what I was gonna say. That's that does not seem like a normal website. I mean, geez, that sounds like a better use than whatever Twitter is. These days, Twitter is just an absolute albatross at Ryan at Ryan underscore Landra. I have two questions. The tweet says, does everybody have their Christmas decorations

up yet? No? Because it's not even Thanksgiving yet. Well that doesn't matter, Like, yeah, it does, because you're illegal until after Thanksgiving. Illegal seems kind of harsh. I don't think it's illegal. That doesn't give you enough time to enjoy holiday decorations if you wait till late November to put them up. I think you should wait till December first. Oh my gosh, you Ebenezer Wiper and you guys, something wrong with you? Guys.

No, it goes up the first warm November and uh, eventually I'm gonna bring you to Yahoo's over here and help me get on the roof and hand me Christmas lights so I can wrap the him. You text us about

that like two years ago. I believe I I believe I gave you an order and uh never had a lot of confidence that that was gonna be followed, partially because we should not, none of us should be on roofs for any reason like ever, that's a horrible idea, especially for something as inconsequential as Christmas lights, because we if anything, it's not like I don't have enough of them. There are currently about fourteen Christmas trees spread out across my

oh, my suburban house. Yeah, something like that. Uh, you can see my house from the main road. If you just drive across a Leitha and you see the glowing ore be coming from the west side of town, you will see exactly h you will see the house. So yeah, and the second question from Ryan, Ryan has more Christmas trees than Louisville wins in the past two seasons. That's right, a decent amount, almost double. Yeah. It took you and be seed it to get it doubled.

How long will it take before Louisville surpasses Ryan's Christmas tree count? We see collections growing at about two or three trees a year. So if we'll be matched with two wins or three wins this season, they are gaining. They are gaining on me. But at least at this point in time, I feel like I at least got it until next Christmas. Is your goal just to make your house a forest? My goal is to make my house look like the mall that you go take your kids to see Santa Claus in And

bless my wife's heart, because I've already heard everything. We have a big Christmas tree right in the kitchen because where else would it go. And I've already heard Ryan, I can't live like this in the last few days. And there's still forty five sleeps until Santa Claus gets here. So I guess if that's not the only marriage someone's saying, that, maybe the only one

that's being said about Christmas that's being said about Christmas decorations. Correct, Yeah, our house is our house is a sight, and all the decorations stay up until Bill loses in conference play for the first time. Two questions from Ryan underscore orlandra at the second one, How low of a level would you have to go before you get to a basketball team that would lose to the five inside the paint hosts. Let's start at the top. Let's start at

the top. High NBA team beats us, All college teams beat us high school top. Yeah, Okay, you find any any pro or organized basketball team globally that is our age or older would beat us? Yes, not even I think our age seven would beat us. I agree if they were any level of good at all, which in Nick and Landon's cases, I don't even know if those kids can have drivers licenses in that scenario and they're

still beating us in a basketball game. I think we can talk to drive minus seven from I think I think that we could beat about five percent of high school basketball teams, simply because Nick brought up, like what about the deaf schools, and it's like, I I don't think that. Well, I don't know, actually I don't like we could just call out our plays and they wouldn't be able to hear our commands. Right, I could be like Nick, go to the basket now and like no one would hear it.

I think that's how would work it. Could I have played against the deaf school before in and did you win? We beat them by a lot, we beat we'd beat some Christian home school organization. I think we beat half the middle school teams, like half the that's it. I don't know about half. I think we beat maybe ten of middle school. I thought you would at least beat more than half of them were middle schoolers are like

five foot at max. No, yeah, Andrew Wagons played middle school ball at some point, my man like like I would be Jeff Witty against middle schoolers. I think you're given. I think you're given a father now, Daniel Cunningham, who probably hasn't dribbled the basket of those middle schoolers. I'm telling you that I don't know. I think we're losing to like eighty percent of middle school teams and ninety nine point nine percent of high school teams.

The more I think about it, yeah, like there's only like it would have to be the we'd have to, for one, get some amount of ability to practice and train to even of girls high school basketball teams would be beat like five more than once. I would really like to know if people actually are. I have to imagine at all. I have to imagine that the should schedule that close out. I I have to imagine the bottom five percent tile of women's high school teams are like small town schools with twenty three

kids and everybody on that team is like four foot eight. I have to think those teams exist. We we theoretically should beat them. Yeah, but we we're losing to ninety seven percent of women's high school teams and probably half the women's middle school teams. I don't know about that women's middle school teams, I think boys. Have you seen women's middle school basketball teams? No, but I know that they exist. Our team has never played a game

of basketball together, and we don't have any practice. It's just it's gonna be a matter of luck. You're gonna Thompson against middle school girl basketball. We should set up, like you know, on like video games or like especially mobile games. I remember this being a thing like it would ramp up your difficulty and you'd get to like play against the worst difficulty and you keep

going up. We should have this happen where we play like we play like a fourth grade wreck girls team to start and we go up until we lose, kind of like are you smarter than a fifth grader? Where they started really easy, and well, boy, you're gonna like it's like the one hundred dollars question on who wants to be a millionaire, which is probably before your time. So I'll go with the first. I'll go with it. Whenever we beat fourth grade girls forty to thirty eight, and it's like barely

getting the first grade math? Are you smarter than a fifth grader? Question? Where we've passed the first level? But there's no need to watch the rest of the show because you know that dumbass isn't winning any money. That's basically us at that point. It's just a matter of are we losing the sixth or eighth grade. I think we're getting our doors blown off of us by ninety plus percent of women's high school teams. I think we're getting out

of medicals. But until we actually get on the floor with the high school women's best has offered us to play their high school girls basketball team, and they would lose by so many points that game wouldn't even be close. They are a basketball team. Let's start with what they are and what we're not. They are a basketball team. They are athletes. We are neither of those things. We sit at a desk and talk about athletes and basketball teams.

We would not just stroll on out on that court after a morning of eating I Hot pancakes and go beat an organized basketball team at any level. You have to hope that ball's going in the basket out of Steph Curry clipp Because the quality of the opponent that we have it may impact Hunter Dickinson's ability to make threes. The quality of opponent that we play does not impact our ability to make threes. That is somewhat true. That is the primary reason

why we would lose. But like I said, if we if we had time to like train for even like six months, I think we could be okay. All right, well maybe someday. We're not gonna shut up about this until we get it done. Because Clay Travis was running his mouth on Twitter about how any like donating money to charity. If the Las Vegas Aces could beat a middle or an at middle of the road high school men's team,

and I don't think they would. I think the average high school boys team would win because like geez, there are men in high school that are windmill dunking and there's only been like three NBA WNBA players ever that I've dunked. But the last Vegas Aces would make they would score three hundred points and forty minutes against the average boys middle school team. So we'll we'll see how that like. And obviously we're right there with the with the aces in this

uh, in this conversation obviously at cam Lipple Golf. If your life depended on Kenny Payne not embarrassing his program for one day, which bridge would you walk off of? And why Kenny Payne for those of you who do not know, is the Louisville coach. And I googled his name and the top article is from a fan sided account and it says, does Kenny Payne even care about Louisville basketball? Wow, let's let's go off the Golden gate.

That's because the Billie Eilish song that is such a long way down and it is so cold there. Kenny Payne's record as Lilibo coach is five and twenty nine. I cannot believe that man didn't get fired after one year. Like it's one of those that survive the season, right. It's one of those things where I wanted the Royals to fire Matt Quatrero as their manager this year, and people were like, you can't fire him after one year. No, if you set a franchise record for losses, I don't care how much

of it's your fault. You gotta get, you gotta go. At that point, Kenny Payne went four and twenty eight last year. I don't even care how much that's his fault, Like, you can't do that. That should have been a firing. No, he can't survive the season. My gosh, at show me hawk. Two questions. Can we dispel the myth that Kansas does not play well in the Sprint Slash t Mobile Center. Yeah, that's true. They have like a seventy five percent win percentage there and

they normally played pretty quality teams there. They're just fine there. Yeah. And also the k quarterback situation is real interesting now with Jason Bean getting injured. Who starts next week against k State? Probably still Jason Bean. It sounded like he was doing better after the game. Yeah, probably Jason Bean. I'll tell you who it won't be. Yeah, there's a very good chance it will not be the guy Ryan will say. I liked Cole Ballard and O came out. He has no pocket presence yet, but I think

he will be okay in the future. I missed the preseason Big twelve Offensive Player of the Year. That guy was good. You know, he was active. He was active a couple weeks ago. That guy should play. Yeah, I agree, he should play. I don't know what happened there. Uh oh, so I want I don't want to well, okay at Ryan on the score, Lange with what do you guys think of Brian Haney? I don't listen to him enough to actually have much an opinion. I

think he is not as bad as you think he is. Oh my god, I don't even know where to start with this one, Nick, What do you think of Brian Haney? I don't listen to the radio, but he's a nice guy. So my wife works nights and I pick up some

uber eats and door dashing jobs on the side. So I'm driving around on a lot of weekends and I have the game on in my radio in the car, and oh my god, I want to drive that car into the thickest brick wall every single time Brian Haney says anything that's not the play that's going on. He is a brilliant, brilliant ambassador for this university, and Kansas is so lucky to have him. So it is the shallowest thing for me to say I cannot stand his voice, and I cannot stand his announcing

style. Whenever he goes the legend of Ballard, Will it begin today? Stay tuned Jayhawk Nation, Oh my gosh, just stab me with every needle in existence. At the same time, I cannot stand it. And I was listening to the exhibition game where kJ threw an assists to mccullor and then the next possession of mccallr threw one to CAJ and Brian Haney stands up and goes, you gotta love the reciprocation, and I'm just like, oh my gosh, why does this exist. He's just yeah, he's he knows his

stats. He reps the university with the pride that you would die for your announcer to do it. I just can't freaking stand it. And I know that's terrible because I don't have the voice of al Michaels and I'm a corny mofo in case you don't listen to those drops. But Brian Haney could stand in the middle of an Iowa cornfield and be the corniest thing that exists in that field. Like I said, I do not quite have the strong feelings

of Ryan on this opinion. And the moment that I know, the moment that I realized that wasn't gonna work, is when I went to the KU banquet, and Brian Haney gets up there and says, before we introduce Bill self, I want to read you a poem recapping the Jayhawks season. And I at that point almost hit myself with that fork right between the pieballs.

And it went on. I swear to god. It went on for thirty minutes, and it was like it just kept going, and the old people would clap every time he made a somewhat corning rhyme, and I just wanted it to stop. Yeah, that's that's I don't know. I don't want to sound mean because I like Brian Haney. I think he follows Rock Chalk Blog on Twitter. He's he's a nice guy. But but god, I can't I can't believe that that's the that's that, that's what we're dealing with

here at Olhart Casey, I'm sure he's not. But as Hunter Dickinson, the first player to run mismatt shoes at Kansas, can't remember anyone in particular doing it, says I dig it, Yes, me too, talked about that earlier in the show Great Minds. Think alike, Casey, I can't remember anybody doing that. We've seen some cool shoes, but that is awesome. He's done that two times now, clearly that's a stick. Yeah, it seems like something he would do. I have no idea if anyone's done

that before. At Ryan under scorlandra with Nick on a scale of one to watch, of a scale of watching Devin Neil Thrill passes to ten, how much do you hate? Ask Rock Chalk Blog. It's gotten better? Wow, that's not I would have a lot of answer. Oh, okay, so it's still it's still quite bad. It's still uh, it's still a little bit better than watching paint dry, but but still not. I mean, let's be honest here, it's ten fifty six pm and we're talking to

It's not as bad as talking about Rodney Terry's underwear color. But I mean it is ten fifty six pm on a Saturday night and I'm sleep deprived, so uh, you know, it could think will be better. Then I'll give you a basketball question at Jaybird eight to eight seven, let's discuss Johnny Furfey. Is he really six foot nine? I didn't realize that either. That's what he's listed at. Yeah, they say that like four times on

the broadcast. I don't think. So here's why I've said I've stood next to him like three times this semester when i'ven't been in the dining hall at Ku and I have one of the guys in my NBA cohort is six foot seven, and they seem about the same height. He is listed at six nine. His twenty four to seven recruiting page, which was updated just six months ago, says he's six seven, so I don't know some more between there. He definitely gets up like a six to nine guy. He has

a very good vertical. The question talks about are the shin splints lingering a lot of potential? Can he become a big time and needed contributed this year potential first round pick? Yes, he has a lot of upside. I posted twenty twenty six big tool Player of the Year Johnny Furfey on Twitter, and I'm not sure that he's going to still be here in twenty twenty six. But remember this Pema Kaylak stuff I told you earlier, got off to a great start, didn't play a lot. I think you're gonna see furfy

play more partially because of the team's makeup than compared to that one. But is he gonna be a guy that's averaging ten to fifteen points a game somewhere in there as a freshman. Probably not uber talented, though they need him to shoot. Yeah, I think that sums it up pretty well. He has a lot of talent that's really apparent. Obviously the in and out of a Big twelve regular season that will be an incredible testing ground to see if

he really is going to be that good or not. But I definitely I think there's a very chance he is not here for four years at Elliott Rusen h final questions here. I know we've seen this team against two small conference opposition, but the depth looks pretty good, even though they've only been afraid of only having nine guys. Yeah, it's been fine. Also, they

don't need more than that many guys to play against these teams. Uh, Let's see how it holds up when the first two guys get banged up, when someone bangs their head and misses a couple of games, or when someone rolls an ankle and misses a week. Like, let's see how it holds up there, Because at this point you're Parker Brown or Hunter Dickinson getting hurt from having one center on the roster and then who knows what that's gonna look

like. Also, Elliott says, I personally think Djankovic might play him a little more than we think get some open looks. Thoughts, I don't think that's crazy, especially early on in the season, you know, think so not a chance not. Djankovic is the tenth guy in this rotation if you want to call him that, right, tenth. Yeah, but Bill self's not playing them at all. I'd be stunned if he's not playing at all in these games. He's not playing against teams that are good, You're sure,

like in an ideal world, No, But is the injury. It's all about injuries. If they make it through the season, yeah, three injuries, then sure, Jankovic is definitely the first guy up. Yes, And if they make it through the season relatively healthy, nine will be plenty good because this is a fricking great one through nine, maybe the best one through nine in the country. But if you get three injuries before the season,

remember that twenty nineteen team that lost the streak. You had Gerald Vick have personal problems and was in and out of the team before eventually leaving for good. Udoka has a bouquet hurt himself. Devon Dahnson missed him time that season. They had a couple of other weird injuries that year as well.

Uh so, like you're a couple things like that away from the whole floor just falling off and needing Mike Jenkovic a few minutes a game, all right, if you ever have any ascarcb's looked for the tweet and reply to it, Reply to the X. Isn't just an X? Is that what we call the tweet? What is not calling it a tweet? It's a tweet. It's a tweet. Adults, it is a tweet. Let's be adult. Gestures at person who now owns said website. Yeah. Do you know

the names of Elon Musk's children? Have you seen these? Ash Archangel, Yeah, and that's one of the more normal ones. Nick, Have you not said he's first kid. It's like a bunch of symbols, but it's

like airline code for like X ash Archangel. Yeah. One of Elon Musk's kids is named x X space AE space a space x I I hyphen in there somewhere a Z. It also talks about how he wanted to name his kid X because why the hell else would he name anything else, but it violated California law for not being part of the English alphabet, and you cannot legally name your child something that has a non alphabet. Care what one of his names is? Kid's names is techno mechanicus. Yes, it's what he's

what I mean? Did you see what he did? He's got some problems strider and AerR and those seem normal ish by comparison. I think exa dark side rail is my favorite with the symbols in side rail. That's amazing. How many kids does he have? It's like ten, He's got a ton of kids, and there were a bunch of different women on the one that got named Kai or Griffin or Xavier. Have to just be breathing the largest

sigh of relief ever. Yes, and also the fact that he's probably no longer involved and he just they're going to get a check at some point. That's the only involvement with Sir Elon that they will ever have, unless it will be a large check. Yes, because he's worth a lot of money. Is he the richest person in the world? Richest people? And no, I don't think he is anymore. I think somebody passed him kind of

recently. I think it just changed the richest. No, it is Elon Okay is one of three has gone from being worth less than one hundred billion to two hundred and twenty seven billion in three years. I mean it's a it's a it O haughs to do with stock market capitalization with Tesla Bernard Arnold, jaff Bessos, Larry Ellison, Warren Buffett. Wow, Bill Gates is down to seven now, he's really slipping. He's only worth one hundred and fifteen billion. Ha. Poor. Wait, which is the one that eats

at McDonald's every day? There's some one of them eats at McDonald's like every day. In that Warren Buffett. I think that is Warren Buffett, like he McDonald queen. No, it's Derek Queen. When you're that old, you can afford any healthcare you need. Like that's why Trump is almost eighty and is still kicking it despite eating KFC on every Air Force one flight he took. And like that's why Joe Biden might actually be a zombie and he's

still walking around every day. These guys have insane healthcare. Trump got COVID and was airlifted to a hospital and walked out like two days later, Like, yeah, they can eat all they want and still be perfectly fine. All right, let's preview a game. We kind of got off track there. Number sixteen Kentucky versus number one Kansas rankings will shift a little bit. Gotta think Kentucky slides up a spot or two. Tuesday, November fourteenth,

The game is slated to start at eight thirty PM. Remember last year where Michigan State Kentucky played two overtimes before that and the game didn't start till almost ten could happen? Eight thirty is the plan? Realistically, probably closer to nine Kentucky. They are two and zer with wins over New Mexico State and Texas A and m Commerce so also murders Row for them to begin the season. This is a team that only played seven guys in their game just a

couple of nights ago. They were one of the thinnest teams in college basketball. Texas transfer Trey Mitchell is probably their best player, and at six' nine he is their starting center. He's the only non guard that got on the court in their last game, which we'll have a lot to do with the way I'm gonna predict this game. They have a sixte game guy, but he plays a lot more of that Kevin Durant style where he's not really

a true power forward, more of a wing with his game. Yeah, Hunter Dickinson's he's the tallest player in this matchup by three or four inches, but it's gonna feel like more wing. Antonio Reeves is the three point threat, as he's in his fifth year and shot thirty nine percent in each of the last two years. Rob Dillingham is the blue chip freshman. Sounds like

Elon Musk Kid's next name. Their blue chip freshman point guard will remind you of ty Ty Washington, which ty Ti is Elon Musk's thirteenth child name guard PJ. Wagner Joel Burks read Shepherd, Shepherd's fourteenth Justin Edwards, who are all freshman would come out of the rotation. Shepherd is a slam dunk white guy at the game, candidate, what do you want me to do here? Nick? I can't read Arabic. Nick took my paragraph and put it in Arabic, but left Wildcats, so I know that were all right.

Now we're back, so a little bit I can I can actually analyze this team a little bit unlike the first two. The Wildcats are super athletic, all sorts of freshman talent. They got like six top fifty recruits on this team. Very fast, The ty Ty Washington comp for Rob Dillingham is awesome. Plays real fast, explosive athlete, gets to the basket. The questions with this team are shooting and consistency. They are the youngest roster in college

basketball. So despite all of that talent, a matchup with this experienced Kansas team this early in the season feels like about as big of a test as you can hit that team with. I don't know what the line's gonna be in this game, but man, Kentucky so young, never been in this stage, and now you gotta slay a Kansas team that starts what senior senior, senior junior, I mean, geez good. That's that's a big mountain a climb. There's no other team without Big twelve involvement that Kayu has played

more than Kentucky all time. Kansas is eleven and twenty four against the Wildcats, but they're ten and eight against them since nineteen eighty five. They're eight and five against Big Blue under Bill self. They've split their first four champions Classic meetings. Nick, how do you think this is gonna go? The two winning US programs in the history college basketball? And Kansas ain't two. Thank you for not switching that to Cyrillic until I was done. Kansas is

not gonna be messing with languages. They're going to speak the language of blowout. Just kidding. I don't think they're gonna bow them out, but I think Kansas is going to have the advantage. This is a Kentucky team. We talk about matchups being huge in college basketball. This is a Kentucky team that plays a lot of guards and not a lot of sinners. And I think Hunter Dickinson KG Adams are just going to feast on this Kentucky Wildcat's front

court. I think this also young, Kansas has more experience and then Kentucky. This team was kind of cobbled together at the last moment this summer by John Klipari. I don't think they're that good yet, at least Ryan said maybe not until March. I think Kansas wins this game. Give me eighty four to seventy one. Yeah, could Kentucky be good later in the year. I think they absolutely could be good. I don't think they're necessarily bad now, but I do think this is a horrible matchup for the Wildcats,

regardless of time of year. I think they match up so so poorly with Kansas. I think you're gonna see that. I think Kansas wins like eighty one sixty three. I don't think this is close. I think Kansas wins pretty big. I think Hunter Dickinson and kJ absolutely go off unless Trey Mitchell has like the game of his life, and I don't think that's gonna happen.

So I think Kansas wins by eighteen. So I'm intrigued about the Tray Mitchell because we've said that if there's one thing that Hunter Dickinson hasn't been great at, it is he gonna be a good defensively against a really good athlete. Here's a good test for that. We got the size advantage, but Tray Matchell is more athletic and can probably Mitchell's used to being able to step out on the perimeter and play more outside. That's one thing that Dickinson can

do as well. But I think this game could go one to two different ways. I think that Kansas could force a lot of turnovers against the Kentucky team that's gonna grow impatient with k K. You a lot smarter at this point in the season, and I think you get some runouts and some transition opportunities there. But I think Kansas's best play is gonna be to try to

play slower. I think that if the if KU plays a little slower, I think they're gonna pick Kentucky apart over the course of thirty second possessions. I don't trust the Wildcats to be smart enough at this point to go long stretches of game time without turning the ball over against the Kansas team that just knows what they're doing at this point. I agree with you, Land,

and I think Kansas blows out Kentucky. I think the final score is something like eighty four to sixty five or yeah, and that fifteen ish point range. That may be a little ambitious predicting them to blow away a top fifteen team this early in the season, but Kentucky starts. They got seven guys, six of them are freshmen. That freshmen led teams usually aren't great in the Champions Classic event. Kentucky has struggled in this event in recent years.

Partially because of that, and Kansas just seems to be the girl with the curl at this point in college basketball season. So I will say Kansas rolls Kentucky in an enjoyable game for Kansas fans as they get one game closer to Kentucky. If you're a brown nosing rule follower that thinks the NCAA is right, or one game away polls away, one game further with Kentucky if you're keeping track the right way. Other games we're gonna pick five more here.

Rankings are all gonna shift dramatically by the time you listen to the show number twenty two. Villanova doing what they do every year, which is played the local teams they lost last year when they did this this time, do they get revenge? They go at Penn, they do wildcast, big big, Yeah. I'm gonna give villain on this one. I don't trust Villanova, but I don't know anything about Pan. Like how good of a home court

advantage does Pen have? You think it's good? Are they gonna be what's that really famous arena in Philadelphia, the Palestra or the Plestra, the pest Yeah, it's at the Palestra. Yeah, I'm gonna say, I don't know's. I'm gonna say, Pan upsets Villanova. I have no idea, no idea about these themes, but we'll throw a dart here. Xavier at number three Perdue. These schools are all we have always been pretty good rivals. Purdue's little tune up before they go to MAUI I think they win.

Ah, yeah, Perdue will win pretty comfortable. Yeah, easily, Purdue. I'm gonna say the Champions Classic game for last number five Marquette at number twenty five Illinois. Hello, sexy matchup here, give me the fighting a line I at home. Same. I don't think Illinois is good, give me more Quette. Well, if they're not good, I have bad news for you, sir. And the other Champions Classic game between teams that already

have a loss. Number two Duke and number four Michigan State, who wins the first of the night, are the first of the two games in the Champions Classic. I think this game actually is going to be pretty close. But I do think Duke wins. I think Duke wins as well. I think Michigan State beats Duke. I think Izzo's a better coach. I think the Spartans have a little more experience, and I just tooted the horn of

the experience team wins here. Duke's more talented. But I like this Michigan State roster, and I think we're feeling quite differently about them if that one basket at the very end of the James Madison game goes differently. I think the Spartans are still really good and I think that they win here. All right, next show what later this week because they don't play again until Mauie, so we have some time. But we'll get you a show before Maui.

And then boy, we're gonna have to get real creative during that stretch late night games coming right up. That'll be fun, all right. Later on in the week we come back, hopefully with still an undefeated Jayhawk team. This is inside the Paint on a Rock Chalk Blog. I'm Ryan Landreth. I'm Donald Glover's portrayal of Lando Calarisian in solo. I'm Nick Wiper. I guess I can't believe no one said I'm Elon Musk, which would be really cool. Elon you could have bought I would I would be Elon if

if I had. If it was that simple. But I would have bought five NFL teams instead of x's. Yeah. Same, That's seems like a better utilization of resources, all right, something far more manageable and way less controversial somehow, Yeah than Hey, he's he's dead now, rip Dan? Or actually no, maybe the pe can be pissed, rest and pissed Dan. Oh did he pass away? No, he just sold the team. Oh okay, he's dead to the NFL. Yeah, no one cares about

Dan anymore. He can he can go screw himself and on that lovely on that lovely note. Hi John Calipari, Bye, how good night. Yeah,
