All right, So I'm really not sure how I want to open this podcast. I have a couple of different options. I could say, Nicholas Timberlake for three and nope, nope, there goes off the rim. No, not even not even close. Or I could open this up with and Mahomes drops back, Oh, he's got Valdez scaling for the game winner. And then with the loudest and I do mean loudest that I could ever put into
a podcast. Thanks well and in. The Jayhawks really did not play particularly well today, but they did, in fact have eighty three more points in their game than the Chiefs had in the second half of their game. And the Jayhawks, of course finished with eighty three points in this game. We've been watching a lot of sports. We're like, really really stimulated with sports, but not in the way that we had hoped to after a Super Bowl rematch that did not go to the Chiefs ways, So it's that we're gonna
talk about shamanad. This is said the paint on Rock Chalk qlog on Ryan Land. I'm justin Watson Sands, No, please don't do that. You're not there. That's why he dropped the ball. Most of the time that that you you don't say your name and you instead say things. There are things that are fun or not PTSD chihuah wah triggering here, But man, how about the this was not fun and was PTSD trigger That's actually the drop right there, the the slip and ball hits the turf there. That's that's
pretty accurate. Everybody but Hunter Dickinson and Kevin mccoller really could get that sound effect for today? Do you know how many points jay Hawk players not named Dickinson and mccoller combined for today? By the way, well, they had fifty three, so it's thirty, right, thirty against Division two Shamanad who I cannot click on the their page because they don't have one. You could bet on this game. The line was forty two and Kansas did not even
come close, which, hey, I was right. I didn't think it would be this weird, but I was right. It was under forty. And I said that you can have rock Chalk blog if they do not score at least ninety two points. So congratulations, I have a whole dollars a year. What an investment I've run. Hey, not just eight dollars a year, but you also get eight million bots that chirp in your mentions every time you tweet anything, and you also get the great following that I have.
And that's not being rhetorical. Most most of the people that follow Rock Chalk Blog are terrific. With those eight dollars, I can I can buy the blue check and the bots go away, just as the Lord intended. I'm happy to know that we by the Lord, I mean Musk. I'm happy to know that Kansas, failing to score ninety three got Elon Musk his eight dollars. That's that's exactly the way all is well in the world. Let's talk about all right. So number one Kansas eighty three Shamanad. I
think ESPN made a mistake here. I'm not seeing Shamanad's ranking. They only scored fifty six. Do you know what Shamanad is ranked. It has to be like top eight, right based on how that game went. Yeah, I mean it felt like it at times, but they did have fifty six. I would credit to Shamanad. I actually think they put forth a pretty valiant effort for a one and two Division two team. Yes, they played
pretty feisty. They shot the ball very poorly, but they did play pretty feisty, especially whenever you consider what's been going on for that school in the last few months there where they are living, not knowing if it was even gonna be there the next day at some point, and then having to get up and play the number one team in the country. Yes, I thought
that they did a very valiant effort for Shamanad. It's kind of wild that this was the best that they've played against Kansas in the team's four games, and they made six of thirty one threes. Like if they just have a good day from three. I'm not saying Kansas loses, but this gets way more interesting than we thought it would get. If they make an average amount of threes. Yeah, they did not. I guess the same goes for
Kansas. You could argue, who went four of nineteen from three? If they make an average amount of threes, it's maybe not quite as close, but it wasn't. I mean, I guess we should probably lead off with Hunter Dickinson as he was the leader the second second game in a row that mccullor gets a triple double and we don't think he's the leadoff story, Like,
man, what are the like? That's impossible? It is, but I think I think it's still true because Hunter Dickinson had thirty one points, eleven rebounds, fifteen of eighteen from the floor, one of two from three, given him five or six on the year from behind the arc in thirty three minutes he was six of seven actually six of seven, oh six, seven, My bad. He's been absolutely fantastic. That's no surprise. This is the type of game that I kind of envisioned him having and wanted to
see from him against the smaller schools. They played at North Carolina Central, and man had to open the year just absolutely feed him, feed the post all night in the critical moments. There shouldn't have been critical moments, and there really actually wasn't. It wasn't like this game was actually close, but it was close enough that Bill Sell felt the need to play Hunter Dickinson. I feel correctly. I think if you tried to play the walk Ons with
eight minutes, this would have been a pretty interesting affair. So all thirty one very necessary points from Hunter. But I mean, he did exactly what you'd hope he would do against a Division two school, and that his score at will and again he didn't shoot any free throws like that's a natural thirty one from the field. Like, that's very, very impressive, especially for a post player who can shoot free throws well. So he was pretty stunning.
I mean, yeah, what are your takeaways from Hunter? Ryan? So my takeaways. At the beginning of the year, we thought Hunter Dickinson was the perfect player in the bill Self offense. And while his stats are sexy, we knew that he was going to do dirty things to shamanad. Those poor silver Sword players will have never and likely will never go up against a player of Hunter Dickinson's caliber the rest of their lives. But Hunter Dickinson
leads. We talked at the beginning of the year about we knew he'd be great, The question was how would his supporting cast be? Was the depth there? Well? Through four games, Hunter Dickinson leads Kansas in field goals, field goal attempts, free throws, free throw attemps, three pointers, yes for real points, offensive rebounds, defensive rebounds, total rebounds, and blocks. So Honor Dickinson leads Kansas in everything except for assists and turnovers,
Like those are the only two categories left. And I'm a little concerned about that because while Hunter Dickinson has posted insane numbers at Michigan. He was great as a freshman, and he was in All America nineteen points a game guy in the last two years. I think that like kind of like ddrich Lawson was, he kind of feels volume proof, where him getting tired and wearing down throughout the course of the year doesn't feel likely because we've seen him do
this year in and year out. But I am a little nervous. We saw o Chaia Baji, Jalen Wilson. Those guys had nuclear starts in the non con season. Wayne Selden did this maybe a better example because Ibaji and Wilson held up better than Selden did in his last year. Here guys that were averaging twenty ish points a game through around this point in the year, and then the wear and tear of a forty games season. If all goes well, it catches up the shooting slumps, and you see whenever the better
defenses come up, the stats go down. I'm a little concerned about Hunter Dickinson getting so worn out, so to speak, with these high, high usage games, because man with the exception of him, mccullor came on late with his scoring, but with the exception of Dickinson, that Kansas had nothing really going for it in those first twenty five minutes. They were up by twelve after twenty five minutes against a D two team, So really, like,
I don't know, are you concerned at all about that? Like Dickenson, his usage is so high, so good this early in the year on fresh legs, but by game seventeen or eighteen, if we still don't see that the number five six guys on this team step up, that he could get really worn down. I mean, I think it's possible, But I
think you have lots of examples. I mean, there's lots and lots of examples of guys that played a lot of minutes in a given season and there was never like I mean, not that they they would have down games. You know, I'm specifically thinking like Frank Mason, DeVante Graham, Perry Ellis, you know, not that they would have no off nights. Certainly they did, even in great seasons, they had knights that were less than than their lofty standards. But no, I do I mean, I don't.
I don't feel like in most of those cases that there was ever a like season drop off that they never really bounced back from now O Chai kind of did. He got kind of cold from three, and that might have been a legs issue a little bit, and he never, like one hundred percent came back to what his form was in the first half of the year. So there are examples of that too. I don't know. I don't think
I'm too worried about it. I think in this tournament specifically, this could be something interesting to watch because certainly this is a game that you would have really liked to be able to sit Hunter Dickinson for far less than the thirty three minutes that he played, and you didn't have the opportunity to do that.
And he's gonna have to go back out there tomorrow against a very good team either Marquet or UCLA, not sure at the time of recording game's going on, but he's gonna have to play probably that much again, and then if you win that, he's gonna play that much again in the championship game. So yeah, I think that is interesting. Playing a lot of minutes three straight games overall season. I'm not too worried about it. I think we've had enough of the proof of concept that you can play a lot of
minutes in a season and still be extremely good from beginning to end. And it helps Dickinson that the majority of his shots are within three feet of the rim. Like Baji and Wilson relied a lot more on shooting longer range shots, and we saw Baji and Wilson both it doesn't feel like at the rim or in transition is where they struggle. We just saw them go cold for longer stretches from three hundred Dickinson, I don't think he shoots enough threes for
that to be a factor. He's always going to have a higher shooting percentage. But yeah, in this game, we answered some questions before it started, how much do we expect the KU starters to play? And I mean, well, as you said, Dickinson, thirty two Harris, thirty five mccullor thirty five, kJ Adams didn't start, still played twenty six, so a lot of minutes like this was we were hoping that this was going to
be a game wherever they could all play about twenty minutes. But really, and I know they were really never in danger of losing, but you're not sitting your starters with fifteen minutes left in a game you're only up to twelve. Jeanne was playing at a level that they would have beaten the walk Ons, Like you couldn't just put your walk Ons in and give it a rest, you had to actually play your rotation. And I'm sure we'll analyze this
game a little more and really what it means going forth. I did post a couple of nonsense questions on Twitter before it started, and this game really doesn't matter much, so it feels like it'd be more fun to talk about those I asked before the game, and I had almost a unanimous yes from all of the responses, which was a good chunk about thirty or forty of them. But the questions were, uh, number one, would Kansas beat Shamanad if you allowed Shamanad to have six guys on the court at all times?
And after regressive that even the bots were answering yes to that, Thank you, Elon, I appreciate you. Uh, but what do you think wood Kansas? After watching that game? Would Kansas have beaten Shamanad if it was six on five not tonight? No? I believe not, kind of still think they would have, Like I I don't know how they stop Hunter Dickinson. Hunter Dickinson would have maybe had like forty five instead of thirty one for Kansas in that instance, But I don't know how many. I honestly
don't think they would. How many people are you putting on? How many people do you have to throw at Hunter Dickinson before, similar to the way that the Eagles throw like five guys at Travis Kelcey because nobody else on the team can catch. Similar to that, how many guys would you have to put on Hunter Dickinson before the eight or nine players on the court Shamana silver
Starger just like sure Nicholas go ahead and shoot. I don't care. Uh well, the way Timberlake has been shooting lately, I would say, throw about four or five at Hunter Dickinson and just take your chances. And then what was the other question that I posed on Twitter? There was one more that was good. I know that you don't get on that first one. I don't know about the second one. So the other one was would Kansas beat shamanad if Dickinson, McCuller, Harris, and Adams all sat and doing
the math real quick. If you take Harris, mccullar, Dickinson, and Adams out. I believe that Jayhawks scored fifteen points. Not I think McDowell had two, Timberlake had two, Jackson had seven, and Furfy had four. I believe that is fifteen. So no, no, yeah, they would not have not even close. Yikes. At least they didn't get a Jackson State. But hey, more on that later, I guess. All right, So we talked about Dickinson. I yeah, we got a talk
about mccullor because the man went out and had a triple double. You want to read his stats and we'll get in his dues. I don't care who you do it against. Triple doubles ridiculous. Yeah, he has now had as many triple doubles in the last two games as Kansas has had recorded triple doubles in the rest of their program history with two. Yeah, he had twenty two points, ten assists, and eleven rebounds, eight to fourteen from the floor, five to seven from the free throw line, only one of
five from behind the arc. So he's definitely cooled off from his early season form, which is a bit concerning. But that's the only thing truly concerning about Kevin mccullor currently. Yeah, I mean just I mean he did. He turned the ball over five times. He also had three steals, he had two blocks. I mean, just a psychotic performance. You said it on the last show, and I think it's true that I think Kevin mccullor might be the single bill selfiest player of all time, and I think he's
one of the best players to fit that mold. Ever. Yeah, and all triple double stats. We will say this every time. All triple double stats come with an asterisk because blocks and assists were not stats when Wilt Chamberlain was playing, who obviously had a I think he ever probably had fifty. Yeah, it was ridiculous. But since those became stats and triple doubles became
a thing. Entering last week, there were only two triple doubles in the history of Kansas cole Aldrits did it in an NCAA tournament game in two thousand and nine and Jeff Withy did it in a November game against San Jose State in twenty and twelve. Kevin mccullor has now gone out there and matched everybody in the history of Kansas basketball since since assists and blocks became a thing. With two triple doubles, himself in a week. I mean, the man
is the is the ultimate Swiss Army Knife basketball player. I do want to talk about the three point shooting. We had some optimism that that would be better this year. If there's one negative to focus on, Kevin McCuller this year is now six for twenty shooting threes. That is nope, not gonna get it done, especially when three of your four opponents have been three of the worst six or seven teams you're gonna play all year. Uh So I'd
like to see that improve. But he is clearly their second best rebounder, and he is the one Harris may be the best point guard in the country, and I'm not sure to wan Harris is the best passer on this team. That's how good of a passer Kevin mccolor is. Man. Would this team be in a completely different state if if he did not come back. Kansas has three I think it's fair to put kJ Adams in there. Two. They have four bonafide studs. And after that, all right, let's
talk about the two guards. Uh we don't have to really analyze all the numbers here. Johnny Furfey got the start the week. kJ Adams has had pretty miraculous that he was able to play and be as good as he was. He did not start because he just joined the team in Hawaii today, So they start Johnny Furfey, who scores. I do think that is kind of important to caveat a little bit with the way that Kansas looked in general. I mean, just had a teammate lose their mom this week. Also
they're playing in Hawaii. Also, just everything that's been with Hawaii, I'm sure that weighs on you as well. Also, it's shamanad So with all of that, I mean, it's not exactly like stunning that they had a sleepy performance well, and also like and kJ Adams losing his mom and going out and playing a basketball game less than a week later is unbelievable. And I want everybody to remember that the next time that you criticize one of these
players for not putting the ball in the basket enough for your liking. I physically would not be capable of doing that. I don't know many people that's more chance. And he goes out there and plays for his teammates and plays well, scores eight points, makes four of us five shots, has a couple of emphatic dunks. Awesome. I'm sure that whenever basketball is your life to that extent, one of the best things you can do is to get out there and try to stop thinking so much and just kind of get to
play freely. But wow, the guts that that took to sit on an airplane ride, presumably by yourself, for eight hours after the week he's had, just to go play a basketball game and be with his teammates. Nobody would have judged him if he said, I'm not up for the strip, I'll meet up with everybody whenever they get back to Kansas. Just remember that the next time that we're criticizing these kids for not being fast enough for well
enough shooters. They give everything they have for their teammates and for the fans. And I think that's awesome. But yes, good point. Not just the parent. By the way, This isn't a guy that they just met that lost his mom. This is somebody who there are pictures of her on the sideline during their national championship run. The players knew this person and for that to happen, and a guy that's you're in the locker room with everyone
to go through that, Like I can't imagine playing that. They went out there and did as well as they could all things considered. Now onto the two guard with Johnny Furfey starting four points, missed all of his three seventeen minutes. Marco Jackson was the best of these guys. He made a three late to Salvage's seven point night, had three assists. Not much there. Nick Timberlake continues to be a bit disappointment through this point in the year.
He misses all of his threes, does get a bucket late two points eleven minutes. All these guys are very him right now, like we're we're gonna have this conversation every podcast. I feel like they don't have to have the answers right now. I suspect Furfey, Jackson, Timberlake, one of them, if not two of them, will emerge as very quality options when do we get into the meat of big twelve play, But for now, rank Furfy Jackson, Timberlake and McDowell. Uh, what's my criteria here right now?
Or who I have the most upside or what? That's a good question? I mean, I guess it would have to be a little bit of mixture of everything, But just who would you most want to start at the two guard right now, el Mark, who have the most faith in El Marco and it's not close, and then Furfey and it's not close, and then Timberlake and I don't know where McDowell mixes in there. McDowell played ten minutes, he made a bucket. That's shot. Dwell might be over Furfee
right now. McDowell had the best. I think McDowell gives you the best chance to play mistake free basketball, which is an angle, right. They started guys like Hunter Mickelson on previous Kansas teams, and Landon Lucas got started this way too when they had quality players around him and all the other guys told their coach, Hey, we just want someone that's not going to f
up everything out there. That's kind of what McDowell does. He gets the ball of the open guys, and Furfey and Timberlake take more shots and they have a higher up in night for sure. I do think Furfey has a way higher upside. That is that is true. I think Furfey has has like we've been saying, he has kind of a spee skill set, and speed skill set is really really enticing. Yeah, he's also played the least
he had the injuries. I okay, give me the Timberlake take, because you and Nick are are already calling Timberlake booty cheeks, and I'm not sure I'm there yet. Yeah, it's maybe it's just because I had more expectations for him and he's not been very good, and that I'm that I'm selling all my Timberlake stock, whereas you you had your kind of reservations for him and all that, and and you've seen him kind of struggle and that's more
of what you thought, So maybe you're not selling as fast. Yeah, I mean he's been terrible, I think, which again, you know, like we were just caveated. It's it's college basketball. It's not it's not it's not that deep. But uh, he's not been very good. And to see him struggle this way against shamanad Is is not a great sign, especially when the one thing he's supposed to be able to do is shoot the ball. And even if he still struggled at everything else, but he could
shoot and be like, Okay, well he is. He is guind of the guy we thought he was, but he's not really doing that at all. No off to you, like, do they look like they're they're just missing or does everything look wrong? I don't know, And he looks confident taking it. His form is is pretty solid. I don't think there's anything like fundamentally broken about the way he's shooting the ball, at least not that
it looks maybe it's all in his head. I don't know, No, I mean, yeah, it doesn't look like there's anything that's so obviously wrong with the way he's shooting. I don't think he's taking bad shots either. I mean, I think he's taking open shots in the rhythm of the offense, like just not going down, And that is, honestly the more concerning thing. It's kind of like when you see a guy have a non contact injury as opposed to when he gets crunched in the knee by two guys.
The non contact one is usually the worse or the more guaranteed devastating injury. If a guy's just missing shots all the time, even when they're good shots, that's that's a pretty bad sign. Again, it's early. Who knows, he might develop just fine and just he might just take a few games to get going, but that is often not the case. So that is concerning to me, and I remember so I for some reason, I have
a pretty good memory with Kansas basketball. I remember Isaiah Moss startling. Remember random things really well all the time, right, Yeah, I know, and and none of it's really that useful. But in this case, I was incorrect. I remember Isaiah Moss starting slow. He did what I think, I remember that true. He missed the Duke game hurt, and then he immediately comes out and he goes five for six against Monmouth and three for four against Shamanad two of his first three games. I mean, quality looks
ball is going to the basket. Isaiah Moss's first four games of his of his Kansas career, he made ten threes. Nick Timberlake has three. There's a difference, uh, Jalen Coleman Lands was immediately very good shot more than forty percent throughout the course of a year on a national championship team. Kansas always has that one guy who his job is to make threes. Nick Timberlake made threes on a very high clip at Talsand this guy average seventeen points a
game the last two years. And I hope that we didn't just that Kansas didn't just fall into a guy who just isn't cut out at this level. The competition is so different. But geez Towson played plenty of teams that are just as good as Shamana, and the ball is just not going to the
basket. So I have a feeling it will work for him. The thing that makes me nervous though, is Isaiah Moss and Jalen Coleman Lands were better at non shooting parts of basketball than Nick Timberlake, as I think the better play power before exactly yes, they played NCH tournament games, whereas Timberlake. I don't have doubts about the shooting. I think his three point shooting will be fine. What I'm nervous about is is he going to be a liability
when he's in the game defensively? Is the ball handling something to watch this point in the year. He has more turnovers more fouls than assists. Like, that's not great, more turnovers than steals not great? Are we going to see that part of his game get better? Right now? I think that Kansas probably should continue to start Almarco Jackson. He has the highest upside, he has the highest ceiling. I think he's the best of those guys
right now, and I think he does the most things well. The shooting may not be great right now, but his ball handling is easily the best of any of those guys. I think his defense is the best of any of those guys right now, and I think that gets you as close to that. We got four good guys, just put somebody out there that can make the passes and not screwed up. I think al Marco's your best chance right now, and I also think he has the highest chance of turning into
a really good player. Furfey needs to see plenty of minutes, and Timberlake does too. I wonder kind of if Artaria Morris was here. I wonder if you would see him kind of definitively grab that number five spot because he plays quality defense and he was a good ball handler, very good athlete. But without him, I think that you're kind of doing this bi committee.
Yeah, it's gonna be interesting. I think I think Timberlake's in danger of playing himself to be like a five minute a guy or five minute a game kind of guy. Tried him out, see what he does, doesn't do much, doesn't play again, but we'll see. Who knows you think he's in danger of falling behind like McDowell in the rotation. Uh, I do, but again I mean McDowell to be fair, he did play like ten minutes in this game, and I thought looked good. McDowell has gotten the
least run of these guys. He missed the first game, right, he didn't play against n C Central, and then of course only played like the last handful of minutes against Kentucky. I think he played well in those minutes, but it wasn't a big sample size. So certainly like he's the guy we've seen the least of of these four. And I agree, I think Jackson is definitely the leader in the clubhouse. He's looked good. You know, he's just not super flashy, but he also hasn't had to be very
flashy. But I think over the course of time, if Timberlake isn't making shots and it's clearly struggling elsewhere, if McDowell's doing all of the elsewhere things better than he is, I think you have a great case to play McDowell over Timberlake. I tend to agree. I don't think Timberlake necessarily, Will is just already a bust. Like again, it's it's the fourth game, but I think he's looked the worst out of the four, and I think
McDowell probably also has a higher upside considering he's a true freshman. I'm trying to find the numbers on the three point shooting. If you take Hunter Dickinson out of the equation, it's not great. So they are if you take Dickinson out, Kansas has made thirty three minus six threes, so they've made twenty seven threes this year and they have attempted let's see here, nineteen plus sixty seven is eighty six, and then you subtract seven for Dickinson, so
that's seventy nine. They're twenty seven of seventy nine shooting threes. That is thirty four percent. If you take out on Hunter Dickinson, unless you think he's gonna shoot eighty five percent all a year, it would be great. So the three point shooting hasn't been great, and I think that that's going too. You're going to see guys like Timberlake shoot the ball better. Dewan Harris has also been very good shooting the ball from three this year. Hopefully
that can keep up. But the shooting and the depth are the two weaknesses. I don't think they got a lot of weaknesses on this team right now. Those are the two. As far as kJ Adams, I don't think there's a lot to analyze basically, anyone we haven't talked about at this point. Not a whole lot to take away from Adams could have had zero, zero and twenty five turnovers and it would have been better than anybody could have
expected considering his his week eight and four. On the assist that's he had an awesome on the receiving end of an Alliop slam off the backboard by the one Harris. That was cool, clearly jump out of the jim great athlete. Good to see him on the court. Figure he moves back into the starting role tomorrow, and then Dewan Harris. Not a whole lot. Seven points eight assists was great. Did turn it over a lot. They were playing shamanad It kind of looked like they were just kind of screwing around a
little bit. Thirty five minutes more than I thought we would see. But overall, Kansas shot sixty percent from the floor and twenty one percent on three, which means they're Their two point percentage was seventy eight percent, seventy eight percent on twos and twenty one percent on threes. That's that's something that's called having hundred Dickinson on your team. It is. Those are good numbers. Yeah, I mean you're not a lot to analyze the other guys, Harris
good Kji Adams obviously, especially considering circumstances. I mean, he had eight points and four assists. I mean that's a pretty solid stat line coming off the bench anyway, but especially considering the circumstance. Amazing. Yeah, just a really strange game. They did not look focused. There's some very obvious
reasons why they might not have been focused, so tough to say. Ei, They're definitely they're gonna have to be more focused against either of the next two opponents, because if you put forward an effort like this against one of those two, you very well will lose. I don't think that's gonna be the case. I think they'll be just fine. But yeah, really a really weird one. I mean, any any final takeaways from you, Ryan, other than just strange outing from the Jayhawks that you probably don't think is
gonna be a lasting issue. No, I mean this is I think there's enough things there and then, and this team is I still have the I have the confidence in this team. I think they're gonna win the Mali Tournament. I think this team is gonna go undefeated into January. So didn't see anything tonight that changes my mind at all. It's pretty funny how we're talking about a game if they won by twenty seven points, and we're sitting here
trying to find the negatives because it is Shamanad. I don't really know what else you're supposed to do. But yeah, they wound up winning a game by twenty seven. They beat Shamanad by the and they put up a season low in points, which is pretty wild. Dickinson's in All America. He's the Nate Smith favorite in my book. Kevin McCuller is a superstar. Harris and Adams are both really good. And I don't care who the rest of
you of your roster is. If you have four players who you consider be very good, three of which maybe top fifteen college basketball players, you're gonna be just fine. Final number sixty percent from the floor, twenty one percent from three, and sixty four percent on just eleven free throws. Refs were not calling very much, as you said, even Hunter Dickinson did not attempt
a free throw. Kansas was plus fifteen on the glass. That fifteen matches the number of turnovers they had, playing at a high pace, and it was a It was an entertaining game, and it was probably the most unpleasant twenty seven point win you're ever gonna watch as a Kansas fan. But it was really nice considering that the Big TV had the Chiefs Eagles to backle on
the TV. So really can't complain about how at least one of my favorite teams one tonight Big twelve recaps, Well, there were more l's to be taken by Big twelve teams this week and that's gonna surprise you. But taking their second loss of the season are none other than the Ema bitches. Because Kansas State got Nigel Packed in a revenge game, Pack led Number on thirteen Miami to a ninety one to eighty three win over the Wildcats in the Bahamas
Championship. Kse State managed to beat Providence in overtime two days prior before giving up twenty eight points, including six threes in the first half to their old point guard. Pack made seven threes the Wildcats as a team four on twenty eight shots. Yuck. KSE State is three and two through five games, and while none of the losses have screamed, oh my gosh, this team sucks, they're zero and two by double digits to the only two ranked teams
that they played. I wish that wasn't the only loss that k State took this week. I'm sad about that football game. I was there. Yeah, how is that? How was speaking of watching Lance Reid and Cole Mahomes blow a double digit point lead at home in the second half. Yeah, and Andy Ktlnicky had such a weird game because on one hand, he engineered his third string quarterback to score twenty seven against a ranked team. Uh, which on that hand, I'm like, hey, great game, Like that's
what they had. They had Jason being active and in pads. But you know, they just didn't think that was the right move. You know why is that? It's just because because coach speak Land and you and I are just chuds that don't understand it about football words. They announced being as the starter and they had no intention to start that. Man. Yeah, yeah,
ridiculous, just ridiculous. They've done that twice now and then Lance Leippold made some sort of comment about how, uh maybe, well maybe we'll just red shirt Jaylen Daniels today. It's like, oh my gosh, dude, I'm not I'm all for fun in sports and tongue in cheek humor, but you're the head coach. You have to stop acting like this is a joke. Pick a quarterback, if that quarterback is healthy, start him. Full credit to Cole Ballard. I think he had a solid game. Uh,
he's just young and makes he has young mistakes. He doesn't have a great timer the pocket. I actually think he has solid poise. I think he can, like generally speaking, read the field decently. Well, well he did all you can just stupid throws he made. He made a couple of bad throws. But honestly, like the KU effort, the KU loss and against k State and the Chiefs lost against the Eagles are like super similar. They are very very similar. Lots of turnovers, lots of second half blown
leads, lots of drops. Yeah, it's great and cold cold on outside on both occasions. I'm glad you got between. Yeah that it's very much the KU women beating Arkansas in the w N I t of of Salves. Oh, speaking of Louisville is getting no satisfaction. Per the years, Nineber nineteen, Texas narrowly avoided an apocalyptic outcome. They squeak past the Cardinal eighty one eighty in New York City on a buzzer beater by Max Acemis. The
next day they took on number five Yukon. They lost that one eighty one seventy one in the title game of that tournament. The Huskies controlled that game all night from start to finish, despite twenty one from Dylan Mitchell. So Texas comes up just short of hoisting their first trophy since uh oh when when? When was the last time that Texas won a tournament? Ryan? Can you remember? Yeah, they were national champions just two years ago or three
years ago, weren't they? You? But you forget that time that they obliterated Kansas from beginning to end in the Big twelve title game. Hey, that's yeah, that's ouch. Yeah, but then they also were national champions, Yeah, the national champions on National champions. I do remember Arterio Morris dunking all over Kansas in a game where we were like, what the hell, I don't care if they lost by twenty. That's a number one overall
seed to me. And then they very much so were not and Arkansas said, hold this, but yeah, Texas kind of feels like a fraud. This year, they beat Louisville on a buzzer beater and actually went up four spots in the rankings. I mean, okay, we're doing this like I that. I think last year was the outlier for Texas. They're usually an underachieving, talented team that loses three more games than they should. Now they don't have a come last year. They were actually very good. This year.
I kind of agree. I think they're gonna aggress back to a totally okay, but very underwhelming team. Yep, and k you will. I guess they don't play there, kay, you hasn't won there since before the Chiefs won their first Super Bowl, and now they Yeah, that's that's probably not but they could beat my album this year. Another Orange team that's not doing too hot in the Big twelve is Oklahoma State. They are quite bad. They are one and three on the season. I believe they're two and
three now. I believe they beat New Orleans University tonight. They did by by almost thirty by more than Kansas beat shamanad So Oklahoma State's two and three. They took two losses in two days at the Legends Classic, losing to Saint Bonaventure and Notre Dame. Mike Boyton Seed has to be pretty hot right now. He's the winner of Well He's gonna get Fired Award this year, I believe. Yeah, I think his seat is hellish, pitchforks hot.
Now. I don't think that guy makes it through the season. Speaking of guys that won't make it through the season, one of these teams doesn't even have a coach technically right now. And I can't say that the start they've gotten up to is really going to inspire confidence. West Virginia, Yeah, they lost to SMU in the Fort Myers tip off by twelve. That's it's pretty bad. What was the final score of that one? Seventy to fifty
eighth season? That's very West Virginia way to lose. Season high end points for West Virginia is seventy, that's all. They haven't scored more than seventy and they played Missouri State, Monmouth, Jacksonville State, and SMU, a grambling state that would be begging for seventy. They lost by almost seventy. Iowa State beat Grambling State. Who are they the Tigers? Is it the Grambling State Tigers. I think that's right, ninety two to thirty seven.
Yes, they are the Tigers. And the Tigers did not have a very They were not out for the hunt. They were down thirty two to four at one point in this game when I checked the score, and I wasn't looking to see the Grambling State Iowa State score. I just was looking through scores and saw thirty two to four. That is the only reason that is in the notes. Yuck. So in other games, I guess we probably
should talk about the Maley Tournament first, but I screw that. We get we'll come back to that because I want to talk about Virginia Land and our friend Tony Bennett. I love talking about Virginia because Virginia. You know, Virginia gave up twenty eight points in the first half today they played Wisconsin and
four. It's pretty good defense, really good defense. Like, you give up twenty eight and a half, you gotta feel pretty good about your chances, right, yeah, and then only give up thirty seven in the second half. I mean, that's that's under seventy for the night. Like, that's you should have a good chance, right, I think, Joe, that's that's pretty good. So they give up twenty eight in the first half, only to still be down by ten, and then they did give up
thirty seven in the second half. But good defense in the first half means Virginia only allowed was consin has scored sixty five points, which somehow still resulted in a twenty four point loss. Oh, it didn't even crash. The computer didn't even want to crash. It gave up because of how awful that is in Virginia's ranked twenty four. Why are we still ranking Virginia in the year twenty twenty three? Gotta make it stop. It's it's worthless, guys.
Virginia does play West Virginia and the John Denver Bolt give yeah, and that game, what is the over under in that game going to be? By the way, in Wisconsin, Virginia the over under was barely one twenty. I was gonna say, I feel like the over under in this game that game should be like one hundred and fifteen. Yeah, Kansas almost did
that by themselves the other night. Just not great. By the way, Wisconsin still has some of your favorites from last year, Tyler Wall, Connor Gilmore and the infamous Chucky Hepburn. They are all still there from Kansas Man awful Thanksgiving Day struggle with the with the Badgers of Wisconsin. That was. That was not a fun thing that my eyeballs watched. Gross, No, it was not. But hey, Bobby Pettiford will ever forever be immortalized for
that one moment, all because Zach Clemens sucked. That's the only reason why. So looking at the Maui tournament, all the favorites to this point one we're at halftime of Marquette UCLA and it's a five point game, so koy the direction number seven. Tennessee close really strong. They beat Syracuse seventy three to fifty six. This was just like a four point gamer, so I
believe Syracuse was held scoreless the last like six minutes of this game. Old friend Kyle Cuff Junior went one for five for the Orange and that's pretty much how the night went for Tennessee. The thing that I noticed about the balls the most, who are always really good in November, and Rick Barnes has a stack team. I noticed two things. Number One, they forced a lot of turnovers. Number Two, Santonio Vascobe is still in college. Did
you know that I did? Actually it is surprising. He and Cam Rising, quarterback of the utah Utes. They're going for longest tenured college player, but they have like at least fifteen years to catch Perry Ellison mitchellifoot. So
that's right. I'll be there for a one and Kevin mccullor too. So. Santoniovscoby, Land and you, Me and Nick did a podcast three weeks before the first COVID case was reported in the United States about how santoniovs Scoby was gonna be the white guy of the game as Tennessee came into Allen Field Hows to play Devon Dotson in the Kansas Jayhawks, and he is still shooting threes in college and could potentially both teams just won away from another shot with
that man who he proclaimed in the Bahamas Tournament last year when he made all those threes that we were done with him. Maybe not. Tennessee looking pretty good though they Are you feeling this a little bit? Feeling Are you feeling, Barnes? It's easy to feel Barnes in November and December. It's more about feeling Barnes in March. So, yeah, he puts together good team. They're pretty solid. They have a chance against number two p who beat
number eleven Gonzaga, shocking everyone. Just take note, Gonzaga. They played an athletic team and they lost. I know, stunning, stunning that they played a team that could actually play with their talent level and they lost. Produced seventy three number eleven Gonzaga sixty three. Gonzaga did actually lead this game by five at halftime. They went on to get outscored by fifteen in the second half. Trying to pull up Zach Edy's actual numbers, they were very
good. Twenty five points, fourteen rebounds, including five on the offensive glass. Added three blocks to that, nine of ten from the free throw line for him as well. Really nice outing from eighty in their win. They go into play Tennessee in the semi final. Yeah, Gonzaga. So the Bulldogs were the final score says. They were six for thirty two shooting threes. It felt like six for one hundred and thirty two, especially in that
second half. They just kept launching and it didn't work. They had neim hard was one for nine. They had another guy that was one for five. They had another guy that was one for six, one for four, zero for three. Oh my gosh, these numbers are terrible and I want to criticize and I did on Twitter. I said, they just keep shooting
him. Then I thought, what's the alternative? You can try to go score on Eedy like it was kind of a if you're not making threes against against Purdue, you're screwed and very very fortunate because if Kansas plays Perdue, they shoot the absolute daylight out of the ball from three. Yeah, so Kevin McCuller is there to go of eight. Nothing to worry about there.
Yes, number two Perdue, number seven Tennessee. And if Marquette is able to win the final four of the Maui tournament, will all be top seven teams and one of them will lose multiple games in the next two days. Pretty wild, that's true. And then the other Maui game we talked about, Marquette currently losing number four, Marquette currently losing UCLA thirty five to thirty.
By the time we get through this segment, du Ask ARCBS will be a little closer to the finish too early to determine who will be the Jayhawks opponent as of recording. This another game of note. At least Kentucky needed overtime at home to get by Saint Joseph's. They did get by him ninety six to eighty eight. Let's see here, three Kentucky scorers had twenty plus They made twelve threes. But is that a little bit of a letdown maybe
from playing Kansas really close, really fast paced, intense game. You play a team you should blow out and you don't. Quite Yeah, I wanted to say that that explains it. Oh, they just played Kansas, but they played a game on Sunday and they rolled with whatever Lollsey team they played, So like, I really can't make it sound like this is just the
Kansas hangover. Kentucky also does this, though. They usually get up for the big games, especially early in the season, and then they have tendency Like I feel like we're talking about Kentucky a couple times a year almost losing or actually losing a stunning November home game to a crap school. Like it feels like that's kind of part for the course with them. They're really good, and to be fair, Saint Joseph's has they've They've put together some perfectly
solid teams in the past before. Sure, Yeah, absolutely, Saint Joseph's a solid squad, which kind of ties me in the next point that I want to talk about, which I have a gripe with AP poll voters because do these clowns even watch the games? So you had Florida Atlantic losing at home to Bryant, which we'll talk about in a second, and somebody moved them up one spot on their ballot. They only fall to nineteen. I don't know how that's still a top twenty five caliber spot. Texas barely beats
Louisville. They need a buzzer beater to avoid that they move up for spots. Kentucky only moves up one for what they did against Kansas. I am stunned they didn't move Kentucky into the top ten. Kentucky's one of the ten best teams in college basketball. I don't know anybody can watch Houston beat cracker Jack University and move them up. But Kentucky almost beats Kansas and really should have beat Kansas, and they just kind of stay where they are. Rankings
are weird. We've kind of talked about that before. Overall, not a whole lot to be impressed about. Also, Arkansas lost to a weird school at home. They didn't move down more than a couple spots in a lot of ballots. I don't think, especially early the season, that a lot of people are watching college of games, but rescue like and also then James Madison is one spot behind Michigan State despite having beaten him on the road.
Yeah, which I mean, to be fair, I don't watch a ton of college basketball games early in the season, not this early in the season anyway, But yeah, I mean, at least I knew that James Madison beat Michigan State. So and I also, my job isn't to be an AP voter, right, yep, this is not your full time job. You're actually paid more than most of those media guys for doing this podcast,
so you should actually know everywhere with all of all these rosters. I'm disappointed, well, knowing the state of media currently, that is maybe a little closer than it should be, not true, but a little closer than it should be. Media is showing a lot of restraints because Andy Reid said, we got to do a better job, and it starts with me and nobody tackled him. So I think that that's a pretty good sign of restraint from the media members. Let's talk about a couple of weird home losses from this
last week. You unc Greensboro one at number fourteen Arkansas seventy eight to seventy two after the Razorbacks shot less than twenty percent from three, something that they did much better on when they played the Jay Birds. Also, last year's Final four Darling number ten FAU lost at home by nine to a school called Bryant. I mean FAU. Every year we get a team that makes the final four run that kind of gets a little inflated. We saw it with
UCLA a couple of years ago. We saw it with North Carolina last year. They make a run to the Final four, and everybody annoints them, and then if they get most of their starters back and FAU return their entire squad like, clearly that was a team that could ball. That team was all set to play for a national title until they got buzzer beatered by the Aztecs of San Diego State in the Final four. However, I think putting them at ten was a little premature. Like I agree, we'll see and
like you know, they're gonna have a really nice record. They feel like one of those witch TOAs State teams that's gonna go like twenty eight and four and no one knows if they should be a three seed or and eleven seed, Like you just won't know, just gonna have to hope they stay away from your half of the bracket. Yeah, but you don't want to be losing to Bryant by nine at home. Not a great look, you know
who? You really don't want to be losing at home too, though, sir, I got the music, if you got that, if you got the points with this one, let's see if we can just go ahead and fire it up here, Here we go, we do yea For all those bad ones, this is the worst the Tigers. They entered eight twenty three point favorite at home to Jackson State, to whom they lost and Jackson State, mind you, this is Jackson State will not be playing in the NCAA
tournament. Jackson State will not sniff a winning record in all likelihood. They were owed five coming into this game and Missouri lost to them. This song is fitting. This is the only fitting song where they're all wearing their stupid ass SEC shirts. I love this video so much. It's so great, and hey, full credits Missouri. They've got a really good football team this year. I don't really know how that happened, Like I didn't see that
coming this year. But I'm glad the football team's good because we do is going to lose by seventy five points to Hunter Dickinson and his friends here. They maybe shouldn't air that on broadcast television. There was a tweet from one of the Missouri blogs that deleted it because Kansas fans were laughing at it, and it said, Okay, who do we have to call to get the
Kansas game taken off the schedule? Because oh man, Kansas has thirty ball of them in each of the last two years, and I think that this might actually be the worst. Like there's a chance, there's a real chance. We have seen because we do this show and we've seen all the scores. We have read a lot of Oh my gosh, I can't believe school. I've heard of lost to school. I've never heard of Missouri losing at home to zero to five. Jackson State might be one of the two or
three most are you kidding scores I've ever seen. It's Iowa State losing at home to Florida A and M. Yeah, that's a good call. It's a good comp and that Iowa State team was horrible. You have to be very bad for this to happen. Dennis Kates, by the way, got up in his postgame pressure respect how he still has the suit, and he said, first of all, Jackson State is the best OH to five team
in the country. Well, sir, they were also the only OH and five team in the country and during this game, so I guess that would also make him the worst. But they are now they're now who knows,
Okay, so Jackson State. You know, sometimes these these schools like Texas Southern is pretty famous for scheduling like really good games and play them all on the road and they lose all of them and they're like oh and eleven every year and then they're like one of the better teams in their conference like Yale does. Seems like that. Yeah, this is Jackson State's schedule. Now. To be fair, these are actually all road games, so full credit
only played row games. But here there opponents Memphis, San Diego, Loyola, Marymount, Tulsa and California Baptist and they're own five. Well, they were own five until they played Missouri and now they are one and five. Yeah, that might that's one of the worst. Like, that's that's wild, like Virginia only. And also they lost all these games. None of
these games were even close. It was not even the cal Baptist. They lost by fourteen the California Baptist. Hey, cal Baptist might be cal At this point, we talked a lot about Louisville, but Cal might actually be the worst Power five team in the sport. They lost at home to Montana State the other day. Montana statea state has a history of being like not the worst, right or are they the worst? Well, now I'm now I'll ask you this question after your statement and to see if you can detect
the irony. How many wins over Power five schools do you think Montana State has an now that they've beaten California. Well, I did hear the beginning of your last sentence, So I think it's one. Now they have one. It is their first ever win over a Power five team. Yeah, Cal's bad and Louisville, I thinks Pacific. Yeah, and I think cal lost the Pacific too. They've lost since the Montana State game that was before.
On November tenth, they lost to Pacific. On the sixteenth, they lost to Montana State, lost to a whole ocean, and then they lost to the most boring state in the United States. Maybe Wyoming will complete the trifecta coming up here. We also talked a lot about Louisville. We need to talk about them. So they almost beat Texas and then they almost beat Indiana and Mike Woodson, boy, we talked about an All Times stuper Bowl.
How about Kenny Payne v Mike Woodson for third place in whatever whatever that tournament is. Because Louisville, Indiana is bad and because they were only a six and a half point favorite against the horrible Louisville Cards, that team had some pride and I'm still kind of surprised Louisville beat Coppin State by more than like ten. I think you and Nick both said Kansas might take an Allen Bloomington. I'm not feeling that one. No, I don't think so.
I think I think Indiana's not great. So Louisville's now two and three. They played New Mexico State at home next, which ESPNBBI gives them a fifty four percent win chance. We'll see, we'll see how that works out. Uh yeah, not not great. And then they played Bellermine, who I think has beat them at the KFC Young Center before. Right, Bella Mine is actually good. Yeah, So who knows what it'll be like for Louisville.
Ranked teams to lose since the last show. You will not find Missouri, Louisville or cal On here, but you will find number ten Florida Atlantic, who lost to Bryant, Number eleven Gonzaga. They lost to the fighting Zach Edies of Purdue. Number fourteen Arkansas lost at home to You and C Greensboro. Number fifteen Texas. Not the first time they're gonna be on and not the last time they're gonna be on this It's definitely not the first,
won't be the last either. They lost to Yukon and number twenty four Virginia lost the game their pride, their dignity, their courage, and everything else you can stuff into John Paul Jones Arena because they scored eighteen first half points and still trailed by double digits en route to a boat racing dog walking at the hands of the mighty Wisconsin Badgers. Yuck, ban them forever from the top twenty five. And who knows Marquette might be on this list too.
They're down double digits to UCLA, now who knows. All right, so I did send out an ASCARCB and I said, you got forty five minutes to get questions in, and we did get ten responses. So look at people, go just what you wanted to hear at eleven forty five at night, right, that's exactly the news for real. Now here we go. At least Max's not here to drown himself in between questions, so there are a few. I'm gonna go ahead and get all the same category questions out
here. Here. Let's go here at carter Worth fifty six? Would you rather have KU Football's wide receivers or the Chiefs wide receivers? At Evan Phillips forty five? I want Tyreek back? At Brett Rasdohl, does k you have a better wide receiver? Corpse in the cheat And at Cooper Reeves ten? Could you have caught that pass that Marquest Valvedez scanting drops at the end of the Chief I know I could not have. I would not have gotten
open. I would have fallen on that wet turf. I would not if I'd been teleported to the open spot, I would have not caught the ball, and it would not have been close, and it would have been far less close than he got. Patrick would not have passed me the ball. He would have instead thrown at somebody else who probably would have dropped it. That is true. Pound for pound, the KU receivers are better. The
Chiefs receivers are way better. Like actually, but like for what is expected for the skill level, for the competition level, the KU receivers are much better. I don't think, yes, not even close. I don't think that this is that we're gonna talk much about football in the show. But
I know the Valvez scantly drop sucks. But honestly, justin Watson dropping the fourth and twenty five dot that that one like two damn times that Mahomes this year has had a fourth and twenty five yeat across the field that's hit his guy in the hands. This is the least talented offense Mahomes has ever had. Right like Patrick easy, Yeah, Patrick Dickerson has to has to go out there and do everything he can because uh, you know, and no
one else's is hold. But man, if the Chiefs had a Kevin McCuller like bet Robbin to Patrick Mahomes', I guess they do have Travis Kelcey. But whatever, Just that just a frustrating night for the Chiefs. Yeah, at Matt Underscore Callentine, I did not watch. Why did we score so few points against seam and on eighty three is pretty few? It's because the entire team was sleepy from jet lag except for Hunter. Yeah, that's true,
and mccullar was mostly not sleepy with this triple double. Everyone now McCuller a little way longer. Wait, yeah it was, And I don't blame him because if I was in Maui, the last thing I'd want to do in my life is play basketball. That's fair. At K tweets and news, what what was that? The worst K basketball win you've ever watched? Oh, that's a good question. What's the worst KU basketball? It was the worst twenty seven point KU basketball win I think I've ever watched. Yeah,
the worst actual win. Surely there must be worst ones ones I felt worse about. I mean they played Uh, I think the worst win I've ever seen, and this one was a blowout, was when they beat k State and the COVID year at Bramwadge like fifty nine. I think when they beat Harvard or whatever by like eleven before last. Those ones are always gross. I think the Purdue NCAA tournament game from a while back, shocking Purdue lost tournament game where they won sixty three to sixty What is let me see
if I can find this. There's no way it's gonna be the season tournament game. Fewest points scored in a win bill self Kansas, Like, what is the like? Have they ever won like fifty three to fifty? I'm sure they have. I mean kay State game is almost that fifty one. In the COVID year, Kansas beat Tech Tech in Lubbock fifty eight to fifty seven. That's that's pretty bad. And then a Baji rescued them that night with a game winner. Yeah, they're the top five. I remember that.
Yeah, that was that was rough. Definitely, I'll agree. Worst twenty seven point win will Hunter Dickinson ended with his name in the rafters. Uh, totally, depending on how the season goes. If he is actually American Nation Player the Year and they go to the Final four, then yeah, probably all right. If I love Hunter Dickinson and if he wins First Team or if he wins Big Tip Player of the Year, which he's gonna unless he pops his achilles, he's gonna win Big Twelve Player of the Year.
If that happens. Uh, he should be in the rafters. But if you're gonna say that, Jeff, why shouldn't be up there on Hunter Dickinson should? I can't be friends. I can't do it. I cannot I'm I might left. Let Jeff up there. Yeah, the best defensive player and maybe maybe the best defensive player in modern day college basketball history. I don't know. You know, Chiefs fans have to fall in love with defense now, ky fan should respect it too. Yes, he will end
up with his name in the rafters. I do believe that what would your what from your personal life would Bill Walton bring up if you were on a call with him, Oh my gosh, so many horrible and you have too many things. Oh yeah, this is bad land and this is real bad. If we get to this point, I have a very flowery shirt. I think he would like that a lot. It would remind him of his LSD trips. Yeah, with me, it'd be that it'd be my Villanova
Oregon takes which are replayed on this podcast. And I thought Mitch Leifoot would be the Big twelve player of the year and he only had twenty three chances at it. My blonde hair. He would probably mention he might say something about your blonde hair that could get in legitimate trouble, Like I don't I kind of I think your blonde hair is pretty cool, but I don't know if I trust Bill Walton to say something that would not be dumped. Mmm,
that's fair. That's fair. Do you think are you insinuating that Bill Walton would be sexually attracted to me because of the hair? Hey, if that I both respect that and do not. You can have you can have Bill Walton sicked on you if if that happens, can you at least get him to come on the show, Like, if you're gonna have Bill Walton as your partner, at least get him to come on it TP before you hang it up. I don't think it'd be the worst thing that Bill Walton's
ever come on. The microphone just fell over on the desk. I don't want to pick it up. I'm retiring. This is the last episode we end on Shamanad. Have a great night. You're welcome. Go Jayhawks. Somebody the microphone, by the way, hit the ground like the ball on Marcus Valdez Scantling's end zone pipe shot that I heard that. I can imagine that will only be infinitely worse for the people listening. Yeah, well,
or basically it was that. And then there's there's videos of Valdez Scantling in the locker room after the game as he's walking down the tunnel, slamming his helmet against the wall and he almost drops it, but he catches it, so of course he held on Actually yeah, yeah, of course he holds on to that one. All right, just just one time, just just just one time. Yeah, Marcus at Cooper reeves ten. When can we start worrying about Nick Timberlake. I have a take on this, but I
want your answer first. I say, now we can start right now, all right. I don't think that's I don't think that's fair. What did I say with David McCormick whenever he was kind of booty cheeks against some of the horrible competition k you played early on in the there and wound up winning the title year. I remember you yelling loudly a lot about it, but remind me I kind of went back. I'm kind of hypocritical, I believe. I said. I'm not gonna panic about David McCormick until they've played seven
games. Seven is the number, because after seven, yep, after seven, you have a blend of cupcakes that he should rip apart, and you have a few quality teams, and you have some film on him. Teams should be able to adjust a little bit, throw some counters. Nick Timberlake has played four games. They're gonna some big, big basketball games the next
two days. They're gonna play two very good teams. I want to see what Nick Timberlakes got there, because he was pretty good against Illinoying the scrimmage, and I think you're gonna see his three point shooting be necessary if you want to see Kansas get out of this tournament with a win, with three wins. So I'm not gonna panic until after the Yukon game. Yukon is
game number eight. If we are still at that point a quarter of the year, a quarter the way through, halfway through non con If Nick Timberlake still sucks and it's shooting thirty percent on threes and can't do anything else, then I'll start to panic. But we can give him a few more games at red H Wilson Right now, this is an interesting question. I got this tweeted at me earlier, and I think it was I think it was incorrect, but maybe you'll have a different opinion. Who would you trade for
Joe Yesifu right now? Nobody, thank you, nobody, No. We people said that Timberlake is is worse than yesafu one. I don't know if that's true. Two we had two years. He's also way more interesting than yesafu at least yes there were two years of sample size information to take away from Joe yesafu Like, like we've we've seen four games of Nick Timberlake. Like what you think that's that's enough to pull the play? I don't know. I I would rather have Nick Timberlake on my team than Joe YESAFU,
and I watched a lot of Joe Yesifu. Yeah, I agree. I'd much rather ride it out with Timberlake than than have Yesfu because I know Yesfoo is not good. Do you miss any of the players that transferred out, Like, is there any of them that you think would really help right now? The best ones were the sinners, and that's the last position they need right now. Uh. I would say only for depth, I would not hate Ernest Ooday otherwise no, but even then I don't miss Ernest oday,
but he would be the one I would take back. Ernest Day through four games is averaging less than two points a game. He has five zero, two and zero points seven rebounds of games. Nice shooting twenty five percent from the floor thus far this year. That's really been really spelling a lot too. Three fifteen minutes this year for Uda on an average basis, Yeah, not great. So yeah, I agree Udai was the best player that transferred out. But the guards really, Yesufu Pattiford, I don't need those guys
like we saw it. We had two years of that now not at all. At Evan eight five nine four three five nine four four last morning, now I'm gonna call him Evan Numbers. I said I was gonna do it last show, and I gave him one more. Evan says, who will be the guys on the bench that step up and become consistent contributors or will it ride on the four horses. Uh, I think it's very possibly going to be that. I think el Marco Jackson has the again, the highest
upside to be a guy that can actually score the ball somewhat. But I mean again, Timberlake, Furfey, McDowell really hasn't showed any scoring quite yet. But I do think Furfey has at least shown a wantingness to score. He's also shown a lot of an experience. So I don't know, but I think you're gonna have to rely on those four guys more often than not. Well, and yeah, you're right, I mean, and by and large, like Arizona's pretty balanced, you got a couple teams that are pretty
Yukon's pretty balanced, and Kansas is too. Like whenever we're talking about the Jayhawks here, they have four really good players. If you're going to talk about four players that you feel very confident in, that's plenty enough for just about anyone. That's more than most teams can have. If your biggest problem as a basketball team is, oh, no, we have four really great players, but I don't know who's gonna come off the bench. Like that's
a pretty that's a pretty privileged problem in today's college basketball. It is. Yeah, with depth, I think becoming a thing that is very much a luxury instead of a requirement. I agree, but I do agree with what you said. I do agree that El Marco is the best hope, he has the highest upside. Furfey could do some damage. I think Timberlake will eventually do some things. Well, what a great bart clear there. I hope that we'll see if you ever have ascarcbs the axe hashtag ascarcb. Boy
do I hate that? All Right? Now's the time land and where we're supposed to preview a game and we don't really know who it's gonna be. That's all I got. Yeah, that's uh, that is the case. Currently, there is about twelve and a half minutes in UCLA. Marquette Ucile still leads by three. Marquette has made a push lately and they're currently reviewing for an elbow in the face that looks like it'll very possibly be a flagrant
tube interjection. Maybe I have to get on mute, so I have no idea what they're saying, but I think it's just a bunch of happening. It's just a bunch of stupid refs huddling on my screen. That's all I can watch. They're huddling on talking, right, and I know that one of us, I don't remember which it was, at least one of us is like twenty or thirty seconds behind the other, And so glad to see that whoever's behind is still not missing anything because they're all just chit chatting here.
Yeah, it's be going on for a good minute. Sweet, That's exactly what I wanted to hear. So do you have thoughts on this matchup? Like, we don't know anything about UCLA or Marquette. I know that Art has really good guards and that may be a little bit tougher test for Kansas. At this point, they seem like they're the better team. The rankings would suggest that Marquette does start a six to eleven center, but definitely, you know, he's he's more of your back to the basket big think
kind of kind of what what was the Indiana dudes? Trace Jackson Davis? Is really the vibes that I get from what is it? Oh so uh ego Daro? Is that is that we're gonna roll with that six eleven two thirty five. Yeah, I mean, obviously you have Marquette's frontman, Tyler kolek He. Uh, he's probably the best player between the two teams. He's pretty fantastic guard. Uh. But yeah, I don't I don't know a ton about either of these two teams off the dome. Obviously, Sir
Shaka Smart does coach Marquette, were pretty familiar with him. He does a decent job beating the Jayhawks, at least more more often than most coaches get to. Yeah, he's done decently well, Shaka Smart. So he he's beaten Bill self the last two times they played. I think I think it's it's the last. Yeah, it's a lost two times. They swept them in twenty twenty one. Yeah, they also swept them in twenty eleven. Oh well, if one's a sweep, Yes, you're correct. UCLA is
probably the better coach team overall. Marquette doesn't normally turn the ball over. These are very very These were two of the best teams in college basketball last year at protecting the ball, and they both have at turnover problems in the game that's going on right now. So kads is obviously prone to turning it over either way. I think you're gonna see. If it's Marquette, I think the game's higher scoring, so UCLA probably plays a little bit better than
what they want to do. But this is all for not because by the time you are listening to this, you will already know. So give me two different scores, two different predictions what happens in the event of either matchup. Yeah, again, not knowing a ton about either of these two teams. But if it is indeed Ucla, I think the Jayhawks end up winning eighty five to seventy three. I think UCLA ends up not being able to
hang super well with the Hawks close ish but not close enough. If it's Marquette, I still will take the Jayhawks to win, especially this game looks like it's gonna be a pretty hard fought contest going down to the wire. But I think you're probably way more in line for a eighty one seventy nine kind of game. I think I think you're in for a very close contest.
If it's Marquette, I'll take Jayhawks either way, but I do think Marquette is going to give Kansas everything they can handle if they do get there. I'm trying to remember the last time Kansas played UCLA. It's been It's been a very long time. I believe that the last long time. Yeah, I'm trying to I'm trying to find the head. Not that Elite eight that long ago? Was it? No, they played in Maui. I think they played him in Maui in sixteen, and I know they played him.
And did they play them in Maui? Or is that by h I'm seeing fifteen might be the last time. Yeah, it was in Maui, was it not? Uh, it was in Maui. I can't tell you that it was between sham and OD and Vanderbilt that they beat in the finals that day. I think, Yeah, Marquette was losing this game by twelve and now they are winning on a thirteen to oh run in counting, so they have roared back. Marquette's the tougher game. I think that's who Kansas
is gonna get. I think Kansas beats Marquette, if for anything else, then just because this is I mean, the Marquette's more experienced than Kansas as far as they play together longer, but Kansas starts all the upper classmen. I think Kansas is the best team in the country. I'm not gonna give you a lot of analysis because I don't know a bunch, but I think that Kansas wins against either team. If it's against UCLA, I think they win by tennis. If it's against Marquette, I think it's a down to
the wire sort of game. So we'll see and then what we're gonna do the We're gonna come out tomorrow and do another late night podcast. But if we do, we're at least going to know the winner of who the Jayhawks will be playing or potentially loser, because Marquette is not a gimme, who do you think they are going to be playing or who do you think is gonna win? I guess it's a better question. Other semi final and MAUI number seven, Tennessee number two Perdue. Uh yeah, tough between Rick Barnes
and Matt Painter. Who's gonna choke first? I will take Purdue because I want to see that matchup the most. I want to see Zach Edy against Hunter Dickinson. Maybe just the two best players in the country period, definitely the two best big men in the country. I think that would be a pretty awesome thing to see what happens I mean a very fun matchup. I'm trying to find other matchups for tomorrow, like it's hard because the schedules still
coming out. I guess we'll just pick other MAUI games. Syrahcuse versus Number eleven Gonzaga and the losers bracket. Theoretically, Oh no, that is that is the matchup. That is. I think in Zaga bounces back with a close win. Yeah, I think in Zaga wins by a healthy amount of points. I think they're a lot better. They're They're clearly the best team. I think it's clear. We'll see h depending on what happens here.
I think that they are the best team in the losers bracket, assuming Marquette does wind up winning, and then do we do we need to know the loser either UCLA number four Marquette against against Shamanad. We're not going with Shamanad, right, Yeah, I'm going for the major conference team to win that, all right. And then just because we need a fifth game here you go, you tip against and it's on the road at California. Cal is a three point underdog. I'm gonna go Golden Bears, get a get a
momentum building victory. For you're gonna go with them, surely will be their nine win season. I'm gonna go with the Miners. The Miners are four and oh and I think they make a five and oh and Landon. If you think col wins nine games this year, I will give you rock chalk Blog and ten thousand dollars on top of it. Cal is not winning nine games this year. You're kidding. They'll be lucky to get some five. Hey, you all heard it. Let's go for nine and twenty three Cal.
If they get there, that'll be the most surprising thing that my eyeballs I've ever witnessed. All Right, so you me and Nick. I guess Nick back tomorrow, despite the fact that show's gonna be even later. Oh, he should be all right, Well, we'll be back. It'll be a really fun game to recap regardless. So let's let's ride jay Hawk Country. Let's ride, right, hottest team in the AFC West, Come,
hey, jay Hawk Country, let's ride. That is a team that won their last game, unlike Kansas and the Chiefs, or that's what I meant. That's what I meant the Chiefs. I thought you made Kansas football. Boy, we're just we're just all sorts of fun. Fun parts of this Kansas basketball game kind of did feel like a loss. Yeah, and I didn't even watch it. I mean I did, but it was it was on mute on the second TV. Yeah. Yeah, I had it on mute on my phone most of the night. Yep. And you look down
and you're like, oh, Hunter out another bucket. Oh everybody? That is what the last five minutes of the game where it was just shamanad brick three Hunter layup yep, And they wound up winning by twenty seven, when that was pretty close to the biggest lead they had all night. I don't know if it got bigger than like twenty nine or thirty, I don't know. All Right, well, we'll be back tomorrow. All three of us
can't wait. Gott to recap a big boy game. Say bye. Yeah, I'm either I'm either Father Marquette, the Catholic bishop maybe Priest Marquette is named after or I'm I'm I'm Bill Walton's ghost. He's not dead, but his his basketball ghost. I was at the UCLA. So do you want to uh, do you want to say goodbye? Hopefully you can will this into existence? Can you say goodbye to Marquez Valdez scantling Man in a couple of months. I kind of hope
