Episode description

We go happily ever after with Sammy Smart (@sammyyysmart) to watch a movie (?) about what happens AFTER Tangled (2010) and BEFORE Tangled: The Series (2017). We hang with some old characters, meet some new ones, and mostly wait for something exciting to happen. Tell us what storylines you think should have been included in this petite transitional film at @ITDVPodcast on twitter.

Hello! and welcome to Inside the Disney Vault, the only podcast to go over every single Disney animated movie in chronological order. It check. Every Pixar movie, it check. And now every Disney Channel original movie. Yikes! I'm Oscar. I'm Claire. And I'm Rachel. And today joining us on the pod, we have the one, the only, one of the co-hosts of Too Scary Didn't Watch. It's Sammy Smart! Oh my god! Hello! Yeah.

Fancy running into you here. I mean, you're taking a break from all the spooky movies. I know. This is the opposite of the kind of movie I normally watch. I almost had to do a double feature of this and The Human Centipede today. We're all about balance here. That sounds like the perfect follow-up. What a pairing, what a pairing. Yeah, a college thesis on how they compare and what's the same in both of them.

So speaking of the human centipede, what do you all see in this area of the vault? Well, I see something spooky, a headless Rapunzel. Oh, that is spooky. I see a little rat delivering a piece of mail or an invitation. Yes, yes. And I see a nice little piece of macrame for flower pots made out of... Human hair. Yuck. And I see just in general an aspirational amount of companion animals. I mean, clearly we are talking about.

Tangled before ever after. I was not going to get that right. I did not include myself in there. Simple. not to be confused with Tangled, not to be confused with Tangled Ever After, which is the show, right? There's another movie, I think. There's the show, right? There's a short and then there's a TV show. The research department will check this out. So this is a 2D animated film that takes place after Tangled and before the Tangled series.

series that existed yeah this is setting up the tangled series which then the tangled series is before the short where they get married i'm sorry wait what okay Wait, we need a timeline. So they had the movie, right? And then before Frozen, they had the Tangled Ever After Short where they saw them get married. And then they had a TV show, but they wanted Rapunzel.

with her long hair which is why they had to make this movie to set up why does Rapunzel have her hair again yes you're right so Tangled Ever After is the short Rapunzel's Tangled Adventure is the TV show that ran from 2017 to 2020 yeah so that's pretty recent and then this movie is just a setup of why does she have her hair which is nice of them to explain because we don't

always get an explanation when people revert back yeah after the aladdin tv series why is genie still there not on vacation okay great question this happened a lot i noticed in those cartoons in the 90s because there was also a Beetlejuice cartoon where Lydia and Beetlejuice are just like friends. Yeah. And like it's stuff like that. That's not canon. Exactly. But like that happens so often in the cartoon or like there was a Jumanji cartoon where I think they.

like also we're back in the game and it's just sort of like we undo the thing from the film just to have more to play with. That's fine. Yeah. Weird. Sammy, have you, first of all, have you seen the Tangled original? movie. I have. I have. It's been a while. I did get confused by the amount of Tangled things that were choices on Disney+. But yes, I've seen the original Tangled and I was able to follow the story.

Luckily, I didn't get too lost. Now, Sammy, would you consider yourself a Disney person? What is your connection and relationship to Disney? I wouldn't consider myself a Disney person. I think as a kid, I picked my favorite and just watched that one a lot. I think I probably watched Lion King every day for a year, probably. Yes.

And then a couple of years later, it was Hercules. So I've picked my favorites and stuck with them. And I mean, I think I've seen most of the classic Disney films and Pixar. And I also grew up in Orange County, so I was close to Disneyland. Amazing. So you went to the parks? I went to the parks. and loved them. They were always very overwhelming. I was, I'm sure, had some tantrums at...

Disneyland like you do. You get overwhelmed and have so much sugar and then you cry. I do that all the time. To this day. It's a lot. What is the best ride at Disneyland, do you think, Sammy? I liked Space Mountain a lot. I got to say, I haven't been in a long time since I think they've added a lot since I've been last, probably been 10 years or so since I've been. It's on my to-do list. I need to go back and see all these new things.

There's like a Star Wars land and I don't know. Yeah. Yeah. It's a totally different park now. If you like Space Mountain right now, it's Hyper Space Mountain, which is the Star Wars version. And in my opinion, it's the best. Ooh. Yeah. So I don't know if.

star wars fan as well but this is the time to go if you want to check it all out i gotta go i gotta see this um but yeah that's that's that's basically it i feel like yeah i have i'm not a huge disney person but i like i like the things that i do end up watching and yeah amazing well we're gonna get your take on this movie but first

I think we need some little smart housekeeping, yes? Oh, yes. So, Tangled Before Ever After, from the year 2017, can you believe how close we are getting? No way. To these movies. No way. He appeared March 10th, 2017. And some fun facts. Rapunzel's father, King Frederick, speaks on screen for the first time. Since I don't think either of her parents spoke in the first movie, which was interesting to me because he sounded so much like a villain.

his voice um but maybe that's just a me thing um and voice actors always play villain Maybe, yeah. I recognized him. He was in an HBO show called Carnival, and he was like literal the devil in that. Oh, wow. Okay, yes. Clancy Brown, known for Shawshank Redemption. Sorry, spoiler for... Carnival for anyone out there. That is a deep cut. You might not be a Disney person, but you are an HBO person. That's true.

Yeah, just don't put all those hints together as to who he may be and what he may be up to, and you'll be okay. So let's see, where were we? Oh, another fun fact. So there are a lot of Broadway actors in this, and Zachary Levi. What was that? Oh, there's in the series, too, because Jeremy Jordan is in.

Oh, cool. And I mean, obviously, it's musical. So I think that may be part of the reason. And so Zachary Levi and Laura Benanti starred in She Loves Me on Broadway together, which was very fun and editorial note. I did see that show, but not with Laura Benanti in it. But anyway, so it's just kind of a fun cast. Oh, and speaking of the cast, we can do that. So we have Zachary Levi as Eugene, Mandy Moore as Rapunzel, Eden Espinosa as Cassandra.

Clancy Brown as King Frederick. Julie Bowen as Queen Ariana. Laura Benanti as Lady Kane. And then we have a bunch of the cast listed that was in the movie that I don't think we're all in this movie. I see. I think Sean Hayes as Pete the Guard and Diedrich Bader as Stan the Guard were the ones that we had. So there are some additionals. But yeah, this cast is way longer than I think who we actually heard from.

i was certain that vin diesel was a voice in this the one like like beef guy that I was like that has to be Vin Diesel I know that voice and then looked it up nope it's no it's not but I really would have liked if it was sounds like Vin Diesel for real yeah I want to know who voiced the little little chameleon thing. Pascal. Pascal. Let's see. Is that on here? That feels like something that like, um, what's his face would do. Yeah. Yeah. Interesting. It's not listed.

continue to look justice for pascal yeah that's pretty much all the fun facts we have i think that this is um you know there's not too much background on it yeah um i went to d23 the year that they announced or the year that the tv show is coming out and i went to the tangled panel because zachary levi and jeremy jordan and mandy moore were all gonna be there so i wanted to see them

And it was just fun. Except for Zachary Levi does talk a lot. He's very much like a theater kid where he just keeps talking. And Jeremy Jordan is very quiet for a theater kid. and like it felt like Zachary Levi was like picking on Jeremy Jordan because a lot of the people there were for Jeremy Jordan because it's a Disney audience and he's in Newsies and like they were all like

So I think he was trying to, he was being mean to Jeremy Jordan, I think because he was jealous that he was getting all retentive. Which character does Jeremy Jordan play? He plays like just some kid who like makes inventions or something like that. They like enlist his help, I think, to investigate the weird thingies.

Okay. But also, you know, you need him there because then he has some solos, you know, and he's a singer. Oh, yes. Yeah, definitely. I do wonder where the series goes because even this as a short, I kind of like what. Is there a lot of story here? I don't know, but shall we jump into it? Let's do it. Shall we swing on in? So we open up. We get a recap of Tangled. Eugene narrates what happened. Very helpful.

uh yeah for someone who hasn't seen it in a very long time also this animation was like really i think this was this claire keen Because it looks like Clark King style. Yeah. Which Glen King was who he originally wanted to direct Tangled, right? It was like his idea that he brought it to Disney. But he brought it as like a 2D, you know, written, drawn.

And then it became 3D. But his daughter is like an artist, too. And she has a really cool style. And I think that's so cool because I feel like I remember him saying he wanted to bring them back for his kids. And so it's so cool that. Then one of his kids got to work on it. So six months after Tangled, this is Rapunzel's coronation.

And we jump right into action with Rapunzel and Eugene running from some dudes on horseback. And then they kind of get away from them and they admire the kingdom, but then get interrupted by guards because the welcoming ceremony is about to begin. And then we get a song about being a princess. I believe it's called Happily After After All. It was very frozen, the music.

Oh, the song things never change. Yeah, exactly. Melodically, I was like, oh, this is sounding like Frozen. It totally did sound like that. So we meet Cassandra, who is Rapunzel's lady-in-waiting. She's kind of telling her to act the part. And she's the guard's daughter, so she's like, tough girl. She's got dark hair. Yeah.

Fun fact, Eden Espinosa played... uh Elphaba for a very long time I think both on and off Broadway so she's got yeah that cool like tough girl kind of thing about her um and so everything must be absolutely perfect and safe for coronation weekend because we've had some problems with safety in the past so the king and queen are very very much aware of this and social security has been i think doubled

and then i realized oh wait there will be no mother gothel i suppose because she's dead which is like i make sense but she's such a huge part of the whole like tangled thing you know well it's not tangled it's tangled before never forever after yeah exactly um and this is also where i realized that the kingdom is called corona That was brought up a lot in 2020. Because Rapunzel spends all her time in her room doing different activities. Wait a second.

That was in the fun facts that like during the beginning of the pandemic, people were like, this is just like Tangled because, you know, we just spend all day. When will my life begin? We're just waiting around. Wow. So then we see Eugene loves this new lifestyle. He loves being pampered, living in the castle, and he hasn't proposed yet.

because that's where we are in the timeline. And Rapunzel feels the pressure, but we see her kind of like psych herself up in the mirror and get ready for this day. Then we cut to this underground layer, and this is where the rat... delivers this invite, or to the coronation, to someone named Lady Kane, who we haven't seen and don't see. For a very long time. So Rapunzel meets royal guests who arrive at the castle who are all very rude to her. Incredibly rude, yeah.

Yeah, it's like she just doesn't act correctly in their eyes, I suppose. And as we know, she loves being barefoot and running around in the grass. Calling people Jimmy. And so Rapunzel and Eugene take a nice, or they go into the...

They sit in a boat. I was going to say they go on a boat ride, but I don't think they actually go anywhere. No, yeah, it doesn't. Just sit in a boat. Stationary boat ride. Exactly. And so they sit in a parked boat in the moonlight. And he, you know, gives her like a really sweet pep talk because she's not feeling... great about what's going on and then he falls into the water and Cassandra interrupts this moment. Yeah, because she tips the boat and he falls down.

So there's some sort of rivalry between the two of them. It seems flirtatious. I was going to say, I was a little like, hey, you guys can't be doing this in front of... Wait a second. Okay, what?

yeah i was like worried about the writers because you know when you like make a tv show and you want certain people to get together but then the audience is like no i ship these people it's like no no no no no yeah tricky tricky because we just spent the whole movie wanting you know Flynn and Rapunzel together yeah so um

Okay, so Rapunzel is going to go spend her day about town, and so she goes off into town. However, she's completely guarded from everyone and everything. The guards don't let her do anything or experience anything. barely she gets i loved this people reach out to her and the guards slap all of their hands away like every just so mechanically slap slap slap nobody touch her like the one guard

whose job it was just to slap everybody's hands. It really tickled me. This was fun of a little bit. Someone tries to hand her a cupcake and the guard takes it and sticks his finger in it and then hands it to her. Yeah, why did he do that? Is that like him like checking it for, I don't know, like a knife inside of it or something? Yeah. Smelling it for poison. All I know is that the cherry fell and I was very sad about it. Yeah. That's so rude. Honestly.

And the handmaiden, Cassandra, chats with Rapunzel about... Oh, she says, you know, she sees that Rapunzel's upset that she didn't really get to spend time outside. And so Cassandra says, you know, I could sneak you out of this castle. We could go on a little adventure. Did you guys feel any suspicion about...

Cassandra? Yes. I did. 100%. She seemed so shady. I thought she was the bad guy. Yeah. I thought so too. Yes. Yes. And I especially thought that because they weren't showing us the bad guy. Yeah. I think we were supposed to believe that she was the bad guy. Yeah.

They got us. They got us. They got us good. They did. Well, and also just so suspicious that there's this brand new character who has a huge part all of a sudden. It doesn't, it didn't, it doesn't make sense. And she has dark hair. Yeah, especially. Dark hair is evil. Brunette. I mean I have dark hair and I am evil so it tracks yeah I got rid of my dark hair yeah and now you're not evil

And I'm blonde and I'm good. Yeah. I mean, yes, that's what Tangled taught us. Golden hair. My goodness. You're magical. Yeah. So. There's like a royal meal and dad doesn't understand why Rapunzel is upset. And then at the same meal, Eugene decides to propose to Rapunzel. He even has a line about like, what could go wrong? This is probably the best time to do it. Eugene, she's so stressed. She doesn't need this. Yeah, this is bad.

this made me i eugene loses points in my book yeah to suddenly make it about himself during a it's just like we don't do that we don't do that public proposals are always so selfish to me i'm like the person person probably feels pressured to say yes or looks like a jerk if they say no. Right. And it just feels like, why are you doing this in front of everyone? Why do you need everyone to see it? It should be an intimate moment.

Just also, yeah, very risky, too. Exactly. Like, if you're doing a public proposal, make sure you talk to the person. Yeah. And don't blindside them like Eugene did with Rapunzel because she was shook. Yes. Yeah. But we do know from the movie that he does ask a lot. Right.

in a way yeah you're right because we already know that it sort of makes a little more safe because we know we're not in danger of losing this relationship yeah we're not like oh no we're like oh this is just one yeah yeah just take take one So she runs away. She says she needs air. She's got to go clear her head. And then we cut to Cassandra who shows us all these weapons that she has. Again evil. While they get ready. I don't know. Like serious weapons.

And Pascal is told to stay guard and make sure that nobody goes in the room because obviously Rapunzel is supposed to be in the castle. Yeah. So Eugene goes looking for her and he goes in her room and Pascal kind of pulls it off for a little bit. I'm very impressed. Yeah. He pulled it home alone for sure. He did.

He made a silhouette in the shape of Rapunzel and... but you know who doesn't speak obviously so he gets a little suspicious and her head falls off yeah her head falls off and then Pascal's cover gets blown because of that um And let's see. Okay, then we see Lady Kane has a plan because the, quote, undesirables have been given the opportunity to get rich and exact revenge for being cast out. Because I guess when...

Rapunzel was kidnapped, a certain group of people were sent away. Very descendants. I was just going to say very descendants. Wow. But again, this, I don't know. Was this enough bad guy stuff for you all? Because I felt like it was just weird little snips that I would forget about. Pretty thin. Pretty thin.

Yeah. Yeah, it was flimsy. In a weird way, Lady Kane wasn't even important or essential to the plot to me. No. Honestly, if we want to talk about the real villain of this movie, it's the dad. I'm just going to say it. It's the dad. Yes. Yes. The person who literally says, no, you got to stay in the castle. I mean, doing the exact same thing Mother Gothel did. Yeah. Yeah.

That should have been highlighted even more as a parallel. You're right. This poor Rapunzel was triggered when the dad said, don't go out. She's right back where she started. Awful. And I think that's also, too, is like Mother Gothel was such a huge part. the first movie so it's kind of a bummer that we don't really have that same counterbalance.

for the villain in this yeah lady kane is not mother god and she'll never be she did not have a solo song about knowing best she did not sway me with her cool look she didn't even have a song vocals how cool would it have been to have just like a villain song in it amazing yeah that's true why didn't it do that It needed that. It definitely needed that. All the songs I say were like very similar, like sort of lovey-dovey, sort of like romantically like...

Meh to me personally. There was one that was only recognizable to me because it's the theme song to the TV show. Oh. None of the songs really worked. But I can't even tell you which one it was. Oops. They didn't really work as vehicles in this. You know what I mean? Yeah, no. They didn't really carry the stories forward. It was just like, hey, I'm enjoying this day. Yeah. Let's sing about that.

When they advertised the show, they were like, and music from Alan Menken again. But I feel like it was kind of phoned in, Alan Menken, and he wasn't really given any kind of storylines to write things. He just wrote, like, here's a song. Use it how you want to do it. use it yeah yeah because we could have gotten cool song about eugene like being hesitant to propose or planning to propose and then like a song about whatever the villain's up to

The dad being overprotective. We just said it like different types of songs. Yes. We've got three songs and they were all pretty much the same. Yeah. All the sidekick animals together in a song. Love to that. Where no one's actually singing because they can't speak. Just a little cacophony of noises. I'd be done for that. That's great.

So, okay. Eugene goes looking for Rapunzel, but he runs into the king and convinces the king that Rapunzel needs time to herself because Eugene knows that she's not in the castle. So Rapunzel and Cassandra sneak out, and Rapunzel's not being very sneaky, because classic her, she's just super excited about what's going on. And then we find that Cassandra has an owl companion named Owl. Like my stuffed animal Hippo named Hippo. It's a great name.

Solid name. I will say that there was a moment where like... Rapunzel goes out and then she's like making a lot of noise. And then Cassandra saves her from these guards. And she's like, how did you know the guards were there? And then she's like, I have eyes everywhere. And the owl shows up and I'm like, how did she know though? Like.

Are they telepathically connected to the owl? It still doesn't explain to me why she knew. They want us to think she's evil because that's an evil person thing to know. That owl was really cute. Well, also, her dad is the leader of the guard, so maybe she just knows everything because of him.

Right, but then why didn't you say, my dad is the leader of the guards. Because it's a lot cooler to say, I know everything. I know. If I was Rapuzzle, I was like, that doesn't explain a single thing. You know what could have helped? A song. to explain why she knows everything. So Max comes along as well. It was the whisper song. That's so fun. I know everything. I'm here for it.

I'm here for it. So, oh, and then we do get a song called, I guess, The Wind in My Hair. That's the song. That's the theme song. All I'm thinking is the reprise of When Will My Life Begin. I can't remember any of the songs from this. They sound like frozen songs. Yeah. Yeah. So Cassandra shows Rapunzel these unbreakable thorn things that are protecting the spot where the miracle flower grew.

And this to me felt very Sleeping Beauty, right? Because doesn't she try to like touch it and they get blown back? And a gold, oh, okay. So a gold streak appears in Rapunzel's hair, and then it turns into her hair just grows crazy and all turns golden again. Yeah. And they run from the thorn things, and they are also being pursued by them. So, like, what's the deal with that, man? I don't know. Can someone explain this to me?

So the so her hair originally was taking after the flower, which brought things back to life. Right. So that's the magic of her hair. Then these thorns are unbreakable. And now when she touched it, now her. is like the thorns and her hair is unbreakable. I love how that ended in a question mark. Okay, so what changed her hair? It's the magic in the... I don't know. I haven't watched the series. You gotta watch the show.

but i think it's that area and her hair is because it was her hair was when she was born she was had the the magic of the flower in her hair okay she's always got the magic with she's got the man magic in her and uh touching the thorns which have a bit of the magic in them because they're from the ground then the magic was revived in her but it threw the thorn so now she has the thorn magic so the magic was

in her hair but it was reactivated by the thorns yes okay but are the thorns like a bad a dark magic great question Because then they chase her. Yeah, because then they chase them. Because they were just staying put. There was like a tablet or a pedestal there placed by who? I think that was like a commemorative plaque. put there to commemorate the flower because that's where they found it.

Who's they though? The kingdom. The tourism department of the kingdom. They would have tourists coming to check out the flower. This could have been a song. This could have been a song from the tourist department. of Corona. Come to Corona, we have a plaque. And it's a plaque? That's the reason to go? Oh no. We have a plaque, the flower's not here anymore.

but i feel like this is also like where i was suspecting cassandra because it's like she just takes her like straight to this place that's immediately incredibly dangerous right and that and then also was like okay well maybe this is where they're gonna like bond which didn't quite happen but then i was like wait are these two

these two now seem like, I don't know. And I'm like, they're trying to pair everybody. I mean, I started to feel like what's happening, but. Cassandra's flirty. That must be it. Yeah. Cassandra is really. She's given off some kind of energy. But yeah, Cassandra kind of doesn't help Rapunzel. The horse does. Max, I think his name is. Yeah. Which is actually kind of cool. I did like that scene. But then there's a storyline where Max has a crush on Cassandra's horse. Yeah.

But that never gets resolved. We're going to have to watch this TV show. Sammy, we're going to have to bring you back. I got to know if these horses ever get together. We're going to be done with the decom vault soon. We need a project. they run yeah so the thorns chase them and then yes this whole sequence was pretty cool and max like The bridge crumbles beneath them and Cassandra's hanging on to Rapunzel and Max like chomps the bridge in order to save it using Rapunzel's...

Oh, her hair gets stuck in the crumbling bridge. Okay, this is it. And then Max releases it and then is able to save everybody. And they go back to the castle. I would have expected Rapunzel to save herself. because if it's a bridge falling you might need a ladder and her hair is kind of that so yeah yeah the mechanics are interesting right yeah She's not used to the hair anymore, so she doesn't know how to use it. And that is a lot of hair. I don't know why she didn't get.

caught on sticks or rocks before she got to the bridge like realistically speaking girl yeah i would have probably gathered it up you know to try to make it a little more manageable but i guess they were they were running fast So they get back to the castle. Security is doubled because of the coronation. So Rapunzel says, oh, we can climb my hair, you know, like the old days. And they go back into her room and they try to cut her hair.

But they find that just like those thorns, it's unbreakable. Nothing works. They try scissors. It wasn't like that before, right? No. No, because I think at the end of the first movie they just cut it. And that was the resolution. Yeah, because before the power was like, it made people young. Yeah. Right. So this magic is shifting. It's now thorny magic. But is it thorns? Because they called them rocks. Okay, it's rocky magic. Pointy rocks. Why do they call it that?

Because they look like thorns to me. I mean, I don't know. They did. Thorny rocks. Thorny rocks. So Eugene sees Rapunzel's golden hair is back and he freaks out a bit. And he's bummed that she's been keeping something from him. And he says, you don't hide things from the people you love. But hide it from your mom, who's the mom.

And then it was very funny because then Rapunzel was wearing one of those like Marie Antoinette wigs to hide her hair. And so they have another meal and she's chatting with her dad. And he says he knows how to keep her safe. And even though these methods are strict and maybe unfair, it's like, okay. So she's also, again, like Frozen, just has to hide in this castle. And then Eugene and Cassandra chat. And she...

She says she doesn't like him because, oh, he has a good handle on the things that he wants. Mm-hmm. For himself. Also, I'm confused as to when Cassandra came in this picture and how quickly she met and got a read on everybody. Because even though she's right, she has very... It's like, we don't know you. No, she's got eyes everywhere. Wink, wink. She has an owl that tells her everything. She has an owl that said, hey, this dude, he thinks he's got it all figured out. Oh, that owl's everywhere.

The biggest gossip in Corona, that owl. Oh, owl the owl? Owl the owl. So the queen gives Rapunzel a coronation gift, which is her... exploring journal. So I guess she went on a big adventure and wrote things down. And she says that Rapunzel has to go out and find her own way.

Right. And she was also like, you're going to be queen, but you can rule in whatever way that you want to. No one's going to tell you how to rule your kingdom. And then gives her a blank book for her to start her exploring journey as well.

So I thought this was like part of your duties when your queen will be like this traveling stuff, but it was more like... go travel on your own and be secret and be cool about it right yeah i think yeah and it seems like that's what rapunzel wants to do anyway she's always tried to Get out on little adventures. And I can't remember, but I feel like this journal comes into play in the series.

We got to see this series. Yeah, that would be cool. It would be cool if she visited similar places or the same places as her mom. Used it as like a little road map. So, Coronation Day. We flash to the villain still not doing anything, but then finally, at 43 minutes into a 58 minute movie. We get Lady Kane, who knocks out some guards. She interrupts the coronation. Everybody runs around screaming. And she says that her father was locked away when Rapunzel went missing. So, like...

It's her father who was scorned. Yeah, she started saying it. I was like, anyway, because that is weak as hell. I was like... We all know Lady Kane is just there to cause drama. There's no stakes in her at all. And maybe she comes back in the show. Maybe she might be the antagonist of the show. Yeah.

But for this one, no. It's so interesting that they made that choice because it could be something more related to what's happening. Like someone who's trying to stop the coronation in some way. I mean, I guess she is trying to stop it. Not really, though. Right. Yeah. That's not like the main goal. I don't think she comes back in the show. I don't remember. I saw episodes, but it was so long ago now. But I feel like the show is mostly just them.

doing things in the kingdom and then there's the underlying plot of these thorny rocks and what to do with them. I liked that they barricaded everybody in. It got a little Game of Thrones there for a second. Yeah, very Red Wedding, except... This was like... Light pink wedding. Yes, exactly. Light pink coronation. Right. I was like, here we go. And then I was like, oh, well. Yeah. She gathers up some people who get into the cart and it's like, what's her plan to take people out?

cart by cart. Yeah, this cart doesn't look big enough for everybody. No. Definitely not. So Rapunzel lets down her hair and demands they be let go. And then a bunch of fighting happens, and that was my only note. That's pissed. That's like, what the heck? You have this hair, and you didn't tell me? Also, she whooped some ass, though, with that hair. And the frying pan.

Which I love that. Love seeing that frying pan back. And then, yeah, dad says she can't leave because her golden hair is back and he has to protect her. which was such a bummer because it was like, wait, what? That's what you got after all that? Yeah, that sucks. So Eugene apologizes for the proposal, and she asks him to be patient with her. And then she sings what I think is called Life After Happily Ever After.

we flash to the spot where the flower grew ominous and that's the end I know I was shocked at this ending I was like wait what what does that mean clearly we need more what's going on it makes a lot of sense that it's a setup for the tv show because yeah it basically ends at like the i don't know what you would think of as like the maybe first act or it's like exactly yeah

So it's like, okay, remember this for the series. Rapunzel has golden hair again. She's not yet the queen, and she hasn't been proposed to, or she hasn't proposed to, but she has not accepted it yet. And there are thorny rocks. Yes, and they're throwing rocks and a journal. And a horse falls in love with another horse. Maybe. Fingers crossed. That's who we ship in this. With Cassandra and... Flint and Rapunzel. Absolutely. So what would you say the moral of this story is?

it's hard because it doesn't get there yet it's like stops before the moral part because really like the dad should be getting to a place of like i want you to live your life to the fullest and i can't like Keep you locked up in a prisoner the same way you were for your whole life. And I thought that we kind of got that after the first film, but maybe we didn't actually reach that point. Yeah, we've moved backwards.

Yeah, I guess the moral of the story is sometimes you need to learn a lesson more than once. Yeah. There you go. My moral is, dads, go to therapy. Yeah. Yep. like figure your shit out you know what i mean just because you dropped the ball and rapunzel was kidnapped don't mean you gotta like kidnap her again you know what i mean so yeah Yeah. And mine is just because you have a happily ever after at one point doesn't mean that it's going to stay that way. It's true.

happily not ever after yeah one would say happily never after yeah That's what this should have been called. Rectangle. Happily never after. Happily never after. Happily for today, but tomorrow? We don't know. Every day. is different and if you see um if you're the department of tourism in your town Make sure you have a lot of plaques. Commemorative plaques. Yeah. Put them around. Don't commemorate anything. You can tell people that anything is cool in a town as long as there's a plaque there.

Yeah. True. Absolutely true. That's a good moral of the story. I'm about to put plaques up everywhere now. Okay, let's cast ourselves. Who will we play in this Tangled movie? Oh, wow. Oh, yeah. Oh, wow. So it's pretty much just the same characters plus Cassandra and Lady Kane. Lady Kane. And Owl. And Cassandra's horse. And... Right. Named? Horse. Yeah, that feels right. That feels correct. Let's see. I was Max, I think, the first time. Max the horse?

I think I want to be the guard that slaps away everybody's hands. Yes, yes, yes. That rule really spoke to me, and I think I could excel in that role. You're a great protector. Yes, that's the role. That's the role everyone wants, and that's the role you got, Sammy. Absolutely. I'm going to say Claire, you're going to be Cassandra. Oh, what?

I was just thinking about how close she is. Oh yeah, I have dark hair and I might be evil. You keep us guessing. You keep us guessing. Just like Cassandra. Oh yeah. Rachel, you're Zach Levi's character. I'm Finn Ryder? Yeah, Flynn Ryder. Okay. Oscar. Okay. Let's see. Okay. Oscar, you're Pascal. Okay. Okay. I mean, I was gunning for Owl. I was gunning for Owl. You were gunning for Owl? But Pascal gets to do the whole thing with the silhouette. Yeah, the bit. Yeah, but Owl does nothing. And notes.

And knows everything. Owl does nothing, knows everything. Okay. That isn't a role for me. I don't know what is. Okay. Well, you know, we tried to give you more work, but I guess we'll take it away. I don't want it. Yeah. But I will write a song for you, and it has to be... done whispered. It's the whisper song. What is that song? Love it. Come on baby let me whisper in your ear.

It is just that. It's a dirty ass sexual song that the owl sings to Cassandra. That's what this movie was missing. That's another will they, won't they? It's a sexy owl song. That's what we needed. Okay, so Sammy, in every DCOM we rank the dads. And so for this one, we're going to rank the king in a category we like to call zaddy watch. And the way that it works is it's sort of a cumulative score of are they a good parent?

And are they hot? Like a zad, right? And if they are the best at both, they get platinum zaddy status, then gold, silver, bronze, then daddy, dad, and father is the worst score you can give. So where does the king rank on everybody's zaddy scale? I don't even remember what he looks like. Let's see. Also, he is a cartoon. Just wanted to be clear. There's hot cartoons, though, for sure. Okay. This one feels difficult.

Yeah. um you know he is the villain of this story um so yeah but also you gotta remember his daughter was kidnapped and so and he's got a lot of trauma that he's dealing with and so he's behaving in a way that's not healthy but it's coming from a place of like fear so you have to be understanding but he's wrong He's bad. So you can't really say that he's a terrible father. He's just, he needs therapy. And don't, doesn't everyone?

So for that, I'll take points off because he's not being a great dad right now. He does have very father looks. Like, he's a real daddy. He's got the beard, the mustache, too. He's a lot older than probably what I would go for in terms of zaddy. But he's got that villain voice. So that's zaddy quality. I'm going to give him a really...

Deciding right now as I'm speaking. I'm going to give him a bronze zaddy. Okay. Still a zaddy, though. Still a zaddy. So, okay. I think he's doing his best to be a good father. And he's being a... Bad father. By trying to be a good father because like he shouldn't be keeping her locked up and all that But like you said he's been through a lot. He's very well groomed. He is a king And so I think hopefully he'll get better But it was kind of a bummer that he didn't really seem to learn anything

in this film. So for that, I'll also give him a bronze zaddy. Yeah, he's drawn really hotly. This is like right up my alley. A man with money that has a beard, his deep ass voice. I'm sold. Is he a good father? Hell no. He's a terrible father. Is he hot as hell? Absolutely. I would smash a thousand percent. I'm not going to give him a platinum zaddy just because he treats.

his daughter really badly and I would probably be like babe chill yeah but he's getting a silver zaddy status um i was gonna go i was gonna go daddy but after hearing all of these arguments i feel like i've raised him a level and i might also do bronze zaddy i feel like his intentions are good there was a moment where he tried to bust into his

daughter's room and eugene was like no she needs some space and he respected that i liked that for him you know after just a brief little conversation he was like all right you're right maybe she does need some space so that's a good sign So yeah, Bronze Daddy. Amazing. Not bad for an animated daddy. Oscar collects another dad for his client. I collect another daddy. Okay, now it's time to rate the movie. Out of five... Thorny rocks. How many thorny rocks do you give Tangled?

Never before will I ever. Never have I ever before ever after never ending story. Okay, so this isn't a movie. This is a setup. So I can't, I can't. I can't say that it's a good movie because it's not a movie. It's not a full story. You know, it's just basically setting you up to watch a TV show. And did it make people want to watch a TV show? I don't know. you guys but did make me want to go re-watch the show because I think I did like it when I watched it

So it did a good job in that, but it's not a movie. So we're taking major points off for that. It was fun seeing them. I like this animation style from 3D to 2D. It's really cool. It looks cool. Yeah. Music, not great. New characters were okay. I mean, an owl named owl. Very funny. So for that, I'll give it a 2.5 Thorny Rocks. Yeah, so a fun fact about this is that they did air it.

episode length and they would split it in half so that just goes to show you how much they were like yeah this isn't really a movie we can just kind of split it up um and it's really not like it didn't even have its own little contained story which they still could have done and delivered the info

they needed to. But I do love the characters that we already knew. The animation is also very cool. It's not, yeah, it's not a movie. It's not really DCOM. They don't, I don't know. Some characters don't learn anything. Why was Lady Kane?

there uh but you know out of respect for tangled i'll give it two out of five what was what are we what's the scale thorny rocks thorny rocks thank you and that thorny rocks were not explained too well they they aren't explain there is a part of this the shop yeah um yeah uh it's so confusing to me how this is considered a Disney Channel original movie when it just didn't have the same spirit as other animated Disney Channel original movies based on...

properties already, you know? Like, Kim Possible, the Kim Possible movie, that was really fun. The Proud Family movie, incredible. This one, like, you're right, it's not a movie. uh therefore like it's really hard to quantify there were more questions that there were answers i understood the intention but to me it just felt kind of sloppy and the songs were trash um i sort of

didn't like Flynn in this movie at all as a character. Felt very sort of, like, icky to me. And, yeah, I don't know. It's not a movie, you know? To quote Tyra Banks. please if i could i would give it a zero but i can't so i'm gonna give it a one wow thorny rock this is getting a one thorny rock wow um yeah you're right it's like We see all of the characters before their character growth moments. So it's like everyone just being their unevolved selves.

And yeah, it does feel like they just wanted to maybe... make some money in the transition to the tv show like hey here's another thing i don't know how much money they make off these things do you guys ever find out that information i'd be like curious to know no idea um but yeah it feel it feels a little unnecessary i think i yeah i'm gonna give it two thorny rocks as well well there you have it this

Movie was not a movie. Not a movie. Exactly. It's not a movie. But you know what? We watched all 58 minutes of it. And we dissected it. Well, we just watched that tangled movie or episode in two parts. I'm ready to move on to watching an actual DCOM. So what's next on our list? Have we got a DCOM next? Because we are watching Descendants 2.

The sequel to The Descendants. Feels like it came upon us so quickly. That's funny. Oh, it's a totally different movie. No, it's the sequel to the George Clooney Descendants. Yes, yes, yes, exactly. So I assume it's the same cast, yes? Yes. Plus new cast. Yeah, I think this is where we get Cherni and McLean in it. Yes. As Ursula's daughter, I think. Oh, Ursula. Okay, cute. I am excited to see where we go with this. Have you seen The Descendants 2 before? Yes.

I think I saw part of it because I happened to have Disney on when it premiered, but I wasn't really paying attention. I didn't really know what was happening. So I'm going to count myself as a no. I see. I see. I see. And you know my ass did not see it at all. But if you, like me, want to see The Descendants 2, you can easily watch it on Disney+. Exciting.

The other one's so fresh. It's so cool that we get to see this one so soon. What are the thorny rocks?

Yeah, are they thorns? Are they rocks? Are they nothing? Who knows? But yeah, I'm excited to watch Descendants 2. We got Ursula's Kid, so that's going to be exciting. I hope the songs are fun. I hope it's a musical. I hope it's musical. I hope we get to see, maybe I know this, but maybe I don't. I hope we get to see more of the Rotten to the Core land. Rotten to the Core land. Yeah.
