In 1953, 11-year-old Monty and her widowed father move to an Alaskan fishing camp. As the only child there, Monty navigates friendships, bullies, and the dangers of the wilderness. She learns about the beauty and peril of nature from various adults, while one fishing guide believes children don't belong at the camp. Through her experiences, Monty and her father confront themes of risk, loss, and survival in the Alaskan wilderness.
