Actually, it's E, very hot here today in Portugal, and I'm happy to be here. Foster Was that a reference to Maroon 5? Alexia Yes. Foster Okay, guys. Let's get serious. Let's get down to business. We talked about Alexia and I had a I don't wanna say a long conversation, but we had a conversation about what it means to be a beginner when you're learning a new language. So in this episode, I was thinking we could just give you all of the good stuff in one short episode. Alexia Yes. I think that it's like a checklist of things that you need to be aware, if you are a beginner in English and you want to make the most of it. Foster Yeah. Essentially, if I if someone comes to me, if a Brazilian, let's, Brazilian Jose, comes to me and says, Foster, I wanna learn English. What should I do? These are the things we would tell him. Alexia Okay. So go ahead, teacher. Foster Okay. So the first question that I would ask all of our students is why are you learning English in the Foster place? And I think that is such an important question because it really makes you consider your motivations, and it also lets you realize how big of an investment this is going to be. It is a life changing decision to learn a new language. Alexia Okay. So when you talk about like goals and motivation, I completely understand what you're saying. If it's like for job, for your professional life, for your private life, for travel, privaja so travalho procure. But when you call, when you talk about investment, what are you talking about? Foster I I am talking about the investment of time, energy, the sacrifices you are going to have to make. I'm not really talking about a financial investment. You can learn English for free on YouTube, or you can listen to thousands of our podcasts. You can also pay a teacher or sign up for one of our courses. That definitely helps the process go a lot Foster. But what I'm really referring to is the amount of energy and time that you are going to have to spend studying and practicing English. Alexia Yeah. Yeah. Especially when you are an adult already. Foster Yes. So just to close this question, Alexia, I believe one of the first episodes ever that we recorded, like, 7 years ago, I recorded in the bathroom of an Airbnb, and the episode title was, are you in or are you out? Yeah. That's the question you Foster question you have to answer. If you're in, good. Let's go. We can keep talking. If you're out, that's cool. Learning a language is not for everyone, and that is totally fine. Alexia Yeah. So in order for us to make progress E. So the first thing that, someone that is starting with English should know, or should think about is, The second thing is to understand how much of investment, energy, mental, physical, whatever it is, time investment, it will be. So E is there a third one? Foster The third? I don't know if this is a question as much as a a very polite Connection, But my suggestion would be you already said these questions are especially true for adults, And the suggestion is kind of like E your ego at the door. That's a mean way to say it, but the nicer way to say it is accept the reality that you are a complete beginner, and you are going to sound silly. You're going to have to learn how to make new movements with your mouth, create new sounds. So it's much easier to I think the way that everyone should approach learning a new language is much more similar to, like, learning how to play a new sport or learning how to play a musical instrument. For example, Alexia, right now, you are learning how to do ceramics. Alexia And I suck right now. Foster I think she's pretty good already. Alexia Very proud of myself, but right now, I suck compared to the other people in my class. Yeah. And that's okay. Foster And you have to embrace that and fall in love with the process of being a beginner. Because if not, it's just not going to be fun and it's not gonna work. Alexia Yeah. That's true. So checklist That's it. I think. Foster Very well said. Alexia Yeah. I think that's awesome, Foster. Thank you so much. Foster Of course. I think with those kind of E tips or principles or questions, whatever you want to call them. Alexia Now I was thinking, I wanna say more. If you cannot answer this E questions or statements, I have no idea. Mhmm. I don't think that you will be able to move forward. I think that you had to have that pretty clear in your life, so you can start with English. Foster These are the minimum requirements. Alexia Yeah. Foster There are a lot more things we could add, but imagine I want to learn how to play football. I'm talking about soccer, but not American football. I am not good with my feet. I would have to learn how to kick a ball. That would be step 1. That would be humiliating, and then I would have to, like, get a coach, and then I would have to start practicing and kicking balls every day. And it would be a really long process. So, really, that's the idea is, are you in? Are you out? This is going to be a big time investment. You kind of need to have some humility, And there was one more point. Alexia Embrace. Foster Embrace the inner child of being a beginner. Alexia And the time investment. Yeah. You said it all. It's all good. Foster There we go. Okay, guys.
