¶ Exploring San Sebastián and 'I'm Going To'
Season six, episode two. Hola viejeros! Today I'm super excited to be in San Sebastian. However, In this lesson, I'm not going to be going to a cafe. Instead, I'm going to a restaurant. One of the many incredible taverns they have here in this historic city by the sea. Now, the thing to do here is go not to one restaurant, but multiple, having smaller plates or tapas at each of them. Wow, this one looks good. It looks very old. I'm going to go in and grab a table.
It it's quite busy in here. I'm going to sit at the bar and wait for them to take my order. First and foremost, do you remember from the last episode how you'd say, to eat? To eat is comer. Comer. Remember, not just eat in Spanish, it's to eat. To say I'm going to in Spanish is voy a Voy is spelt V O Y. But in Spanish, V sounds are pronounced more like a B. So we say boy. Just remember to be a bit softer on the lips. Just imagine a boy going somewhere in your head.
So voy means I'm going and a means to Voy A I am going to This is a really useful phrase in Spanish, and it's used in almost every conversation. So how do you think you would say, I'm going to eat? Say it out loud. Voy a comer. Three words. Voy. A comer. This is a really useful phrase in Spanish. Great! So you've just learned the future tense in Spanish. You're expressing an action you're going to do in the future. Pretty cool, huh? So do you remember how to say to drink in Spanish?
So how do you think you'd say I'm going to drink? voy a beber voy a beber Voy a beber. I'm going to drink. How do you say to pay in Spanish? So can you guess what I'm going to pay will be? Voy a pagar. How do you say to talk or speak? Hablar. Hablar. So, I'm sure you know how to say I'm going to speak. «Вой. А. А. БЛАР». Wow, this food looks good. I'm eyeing up the Spanish potato omelet. The omelette is called a tortilla de patatas. But you can just say una tortilla.
Ah, the wait is here. Hola, una tortilla, por favor. Gracias.
¶ Negating Actions and Using 'Mucho'
The word for much or a lot in Spanish is very similar to the English word much. You just actually add an O at the end. So much becomes mucho. Mucho. With that in mind, how would you say I'm going to eat a lot? Voy a comer mucho. vuoi a comer mucho I'm going to eat is voya comer, and mucho is a lot. Voya comer mucho. Right, so how do you think you'd say I'm not going to eat much? It follows the same rules as we learned in the last lesson. No voy a comer mucho. No. Voy a comer mucho.
It really is that simple. Just add a no at the start to make it negative. So that being said, how do you think you'd say I'm not going to drink? No voy a beber. No, voy a ver. How about I'm not going to drink much? No voy a weber mucho. No, voy a beber mucho. What about I'm not going to speak? No voy a hablar. No, voy a hablar. Now, I'm not going to speak much. How would you say that? No voy a hablar mucho. No voy a hablar mucho.
Now, just out of interest, how do you think you would say, today I'm not going to speak much? The word today is oi. How would you say today I'm not going to speak much? Hoy no voy a hablar mucho. Hoy, no voy a hablar mucho. Good job. What's I'm not going to drink milk? No voy a beber leche. No, voi, a, beber, lecce. Ah, it's my tortilla de patatas. Thank you, sir. Wow, this looks incredible. This looks incredible. Hmm, it's soft, fluffy, warm. Oh yes, it's delicious.
¶ Learning 'You're Going To' and Asking Questions
Right, so now you know how to say I'm going to. Voya. But let me unlock another huge group of phrases for you with one simple word change. To say you're going to, you change voya to va. Now, I want you to know that it's actually two words. Va-a. But, in Spanish, this sounds like one word, and that's because when the same vowel appears at the end of one word and at the start of the next,
They sort of merge into one sound. So the a from va flows directly into the a from a, creating one long va sound. This linking is completely natural in Spanish, and that's why Spanish can often sound very quick. But it's not va-a, but va. So with that being said, to say you're going to eat is va comer. It's not va a comer, but va a comer. Amazing. How about you're going to drink in Spanish? How would you say that? Va a beber. Moving on, you're going to speak. How would you say that?
You're going to pay. Va pagar. Va pagar. ¿Vamos a ver? ¡Va a apagar! Again, to change this from a statement into a question, all you do is change the intonation. So, you're going to eat, va comer, becomes Va comer? You also add a question mark at the end when you write, and an upside-down question mark at the beginning, so you know it's a question right from the start and can use that rising intonation. How about are you going to drink? in Spanish. Vai beber? Are you going to speak?
¿Va a hablar? Ваблар? Are you going to pay? Vá apagar.
¶ Forming Negative Questions and Advanced Practice
So, taking it a step further, what do you think happens when you add a no at the start and use that rising intonation? Nová komer? No va à comer ? That becomes Aren't you going to eat? Say it with me. Nova comer? ¿No va a comer? How would you say aren't you going to pay? ¿No va a pagar? ¿No va a pagar? How would you say aren't you going to speak? No va a hablar? No va a hablar? How would you say, Aren't you going to drink? Nova Weber? Nova Weber?
So how would you say I'm going to eat? Are you going to eat? Woher kommen her? Woher kommen her? Voi a comer. Va a comer? Vou a comer. Vai a comer? How about I'm going to drink? Aren't you going to pay? Voy a beber. ¿No vas pagar? Voy a beber. Non va a pagar? How about I'm not going to talk. Are you going to talk? No voy a hablar.¿Va a hablar? No voy a hablar. ¿Va a hablar?
You see, the possibilities are endless. With these simple rules, you can now say so many different phrases and ask countless questions.
