M you cave. We'll go here, We'll go here. Is this thing on testing testing? Hello a hair? Oh oh jeez, that's never never you want to hear. Hey, everybody, thank you for coming out. You guys are here. What's up? This is so cool? You having fun? Yeah, we's a good crowd. That's a good crowd. I feel like I have now too many waters. Have so many waters over there. I don't know, you've got one in front of I don't know. I just feel bad, so many waters. This

is our podcast, by the way. We just keep talking randomly and hope to edit it together into something later. We're here. This is I hear voices live. It's a live version of our podcast. We've done this only a couple of times. We have This is fun though. Last time we did it was in Where were we San Diego? Yeah, we were at Comic Con in San Diego. Yes we were. You gotta excuse Will. He just had a birthday, so I didn't. I'm now old. That is what Christie is saying.

Thank you very much. I appreciate that. So the question is, we made a huge announcement at San Diego Comic Con. Should we start with our huge amountment you think you should? Why not should we start with the huge announcement? Is that what everybody wants to hear. So the first cool thing is who are we now partnered with? Christ We are partnered with I Heart Radio. Yes, yeah, it's a it's a it's a big deal for a little podcast

that started from comic cons, you know. So I Heart Media as now our partner, which is really really cool. But the really awesome thing is they've allowed us to do kind of our dream, which is what we wanted to do, which is we are announcing a nationwide contest to find the next big voice or actor. You could be sitting in this room right now. So the winner already we're already building up what the the prizes are because they're outstanding, but the ones we can announce now.

The winner wins thousand dollars. Pretty great. You get flown to Los Angeles where you are going to have lunch with Christy and I and there's gonna be somebody else at that lunch and that is your brand new voiceover agent. So you literally win a chance at a voiceover career.

That's crazy, it's super cool. Yeah, yes, I get like I get like Honestly, I have goose bumps because we've been at this Comic Con game for a while and we love you guys so much, and we've had such open, armed community of you know, you guys loving the podcast and what we're doing and getting the word out there. And again, it's all about community for us. And when you guys ask us how do I get into this business,

which happens several times. I see you guys, you know, came from our line and our table today and then are sitting here and it's like, well, we want to give you that opportunity, but not just like because we need use your to like, oh, go on a website or you know, yeah we can. We we can kind of direct you somewhere to go like, oh, look at this website or look at that website. And we looked at each other and went, what if we can actually

give somebody the opportunity to like sign with an agent. Yeah. Um, so this is very very cool, And people come up and do voices for us all day long, including today, which if you guys say we have a microphone in the middle and we have our lovely artist of the day, we should invite him out. We will bring well, Joe's right, Okay,

Joe's coming up later. So our friend Joe Woes is coming up and he's actually gonna draw live as we're up here, and then we want all of you to do the voices of the characters that he's drawing as we're doing it. It's a ton of fun and it is great practice for you know, joining this mega contest that can absolutely change your life and stuff. So um, it is really really cool and we can't wait. But

we also have a very special guest joining us today. Yeah, this is really how many of you guys like play Halo and like love Halo, And I mean, I'm not even that huge of a gamer, and I give mad respect to Halo being so important. How can you not It's Halo. It's like the do you play him? I do? I don't play many video games, but Halo was one of the ones I did, so Yeah it was, Yeah, it absolutely was. I think the last thing I had actually purchased was I think I had a PlayStation two

and there were too many buttons. I couldn't figure it all out. So I've played Halo on my friend when my friends teach me how to do and it's like, okay, but I'm not coordinated enough. You want to roll the dice? Do we want to roll the dice later? Well? Can we can? Well? I didn't even bring my die with me. I'm unarmed. It's actually my bag somewhere. I know how the D n D people are like, how dare you? He always has come unarmed? Are you kidding? Me? Always

walk around the D twenty? What am I thinking? Anyway? Anyway, this is exciting. You wanna this is exciting? Um, So we'd like to talk to our guest for a while, if you guys don't mind if we bring him out? Is that all right? All right? Please? Welcome to the I Hear Voices Live podcast here at Fan Expo Boston. Steve down Yeah, yeah, how are you? I'm great? Well, thank you for asking. But it's been a blast here

in Boston so far. It's been great. What a great convention, what a great bunch of people, and what's some great clam cholder? Man? Man? You know what they ain't kidding about the clam chowder. I had some last night that was unbelievable. It's crazy, isn't it. Yeah? I'm just it's been fun here. I just can't keep having you and McGregor bugging me for autographs. It's like, oh week, it goes with the territory, right, I mean, please, I get it. You're obi wan to give me a break. I know

what you mean. Yeah, So can we talk a little bit about how so. One of the things we love on I Hear Voices is all the different ways people got into the voice over industry, because there's a number of differ We've heard stand up, we've heard artists, we've heard you went kind of a different route with it. How did you get into the voice over? Well, it on the surface, it would seem like a logical route, but it really isn't. I'm my career and my what I would call my day job for four dish years,

uh was I was a disc jockey. I was a rock and roll disc jockey. UM started in college and and just loved it and never left. Uh episode. It would seem a logical jump from being on the you know, radio to to being doing voiceover, but it really isn't. Um. I fell in love with it really from the production side of it. I really loved, you know, part of the job of a of a disc jockey, you know, back in my day, which you know the place to

see era. I believe it was the Jurassic era. Uh is you know, you would do your own production, You make your own commercials. You know, they come in they say, okay, here's a commercial for Bob Chevrolet, and you do that on podcasts now. Yeah yeah, so uh but I really started to fall in love with the production, you know, putting that stuff together and uh, you know I would voice it because I was the only one round. And how different was production at that time because we didn't

have you know, all of the different gadgets. It was primitive primitive to say the least. Uh. You know, you're working with with audio tape and you know, little little pieces of tape and razor blades and you're cutting the tape and do it all this up. But I just I ate it up. I just loved your by the way, kids, audio tape was actual to Yeah. Yeah, that had audio style for the record. Yeah, just thank you for the problem.

I said phone book once and people like um. So anyway, long story short, I got into that part of it. And um when I got when I moved to l A and and got a job on l A Radio, that was the opportunity to really start to exploit voiceover in a in a major way. Got an Asian, you know, and just went went that route and did and still

do really primarily commercial voiceover. I mean in terms of you know, what I mostly do is commercials uh and narration and and something you know what they call industrial work, which is basically non broadcast type of stuff. Uh. You know, the Halo thing was just the aberration and the and the and the and the freak accident that that's changed my life. But but but I beg to differ only because I feel like all your skills end up building to something right, and so when you're you know, able

to produce. I I find this too with people who are writers, like Will is a really great screenwriter. And what I found when you when you work on those other sides of it, you start to understand how to say the lines because you understand the cadence of a produced commercial. That's very true. Yeah, all your skills build

on one another. And and you know, when I was a kid, I mean a little kid, my parents bought a tape recorder and me and my sister would just goof around on it and I'd play disc jockey, you know, and she would sing the jingles, you know. But I mean having no idea that this was the building block of a career, of a career by the way, kids a tape recorder. Um. But also by the way parents, what I've realized too, and this is to the recurring thread in in these origin stories of these icons. We

get to interview and I hear voices. It's like they had this talent from a very young age. This this just this passion for audio recording or you do making noise a lot? Well it is, but I'll let you in on another one. Uh. And we were talking about backstage about oversharing. So this may be that Billy West overshared if you want to go listen to his episode.

When I was a kid, I had a tremendous stuttering problem, really to the point where it was I can remember, you know, horrific instances in third and fourth grade where I couldn't get words out, you know, especially if I was speaking in public. Teacher asked a question and you you know, raise your hand to answer, and I'd stand up to answer and then could not even though I knew the right answer, couldn't get the word out. So the curious thing is that I end up making a

career by speaking. So then how did you understand you're stuttering? Like? How did you get through that? You know? I I don't really know how I I The only thing I can remember is my parents had a babysitter and this old woman. Remember she had one of those you know, big shoes, you know on the one foot. You know, I forget what they call that. Or she was a wish Yeah, I believe she was a witch. That she cast a spell. That's that's that's the message we want

get out there for all you kids out there. Good things will happen. But there was something about her that was soothing. And you know, my mother would send me to this place in that place, and none of it ever did any good. But there was something about this old woman that that calmed me in a way that I can't really explain. And one day it just seemed to go away. And you know, you hear these stories is about you know, Olympic runners. I remember the one

that nobody will remember. But her name was Wilma Rudolph and she was an Olympic champion, uh sprinter. I believe had polio when she was a kid and and became, you know, a gold medal Olympic runner. And uh, it's sometimes you gravitate towards your weakness. And I think that's what happened with me, is that it subconsciously, you know,

I went in that direction. And that's beautiful. So now you mentioned something which is really interesting because I think a lot of people when they think of the voiceover industry, they instantly go to, I'm going to do cartoon voices. I'm going to be a voiceover actor. And that's when I do not realizing that the vast majority of voiceover is commercials exactly. I mean, that's the bread and butter

of what you're doing, is is regular commercial spots. So was did you as you're going to become a voice over actor, as you were working towards become make a voice over actor? Was the dream animation or were you like, I just love doing the commercial I I just loved. What my dream was was to do movie trailers. I wanted to be Don la Fontaine. Sure in the world I wanted to be that guy still could be Yeah, what's stopping you at this point? Well, they don't do

him anymore. By the way, a movie trailer. Uh no, that I mean, yeah, he had that in the world. There was just something about that. And the closest I ever got to it was when Halo five. When Halo Guardians came out, they ran commercials for it in in the movie house, and I remember going to see Star Wars actually, and one of the commercials that ran before the real trailers was Halo Guardians and it used some of my and I remember being with my stepson there

and I was like, that's made that's awesome. That must be for someone who started as a little boy with a stuttering problem, that must be one of the most amazing moments. Way, It's yeah, it's you know, my my wife is also a voice actor and and a stage actors and she has a good friend who gave us a piece of advice many years ago that you guys will both understand, and she said, never get out of line because you just never know when your moment and

your job. Um. You know, people say, well, you're lucky, and I was like, yeah, I'm tremendously lucky. But I think as no matter what career you're pursuing, whether it's acting, voice that it doesn't matter. Is that you need to put yourself in the position to be lucky. That's your job, and then maybe it'll happen. Maybe it won't. But if you enjoy what you're doing, it really doesn't matter. That's really good said some really amazing things. He said, you

gravitate to your weaknesses. To me, that was really amazing. And then that so you're also so you're married to a voice actor. How did you guys meet? We met in the green room at the agent's office. Yeah, she was you know, we had crossed paths several times over the years, but she was involved or I was. I was married before and at this point we both were single. And I met her in in the in the green room.

Which agent it was in Chicago, Illinois. The agent no longer exists right now, but they're called Voices Unlimited and uh and we uh, we were kind of flirting a little in the in the green room, but it didn't really go with your own voice, dude. I was bringing everything I have, whatever I got, I was bringing it.

Uh and uh. So the odd part about it is is that that she had actually had a date with somebody to go to lunch, and she asked me, if you want to come, and I'm saying, I really don't think the guy would appreciate you bringing me along that night our union, uh is when they were trying to merge the side after merging then to what would that

have been two thousand and whatever. So we had two unions or screen Atchers Guild and the American Federation of Radio and Television Artists or Actors whatever, they were trying to merge them. They have since merged. She was volunteering to do call out to get other actors to vote. She happened to have me on her list that night, total coincidence. So she calls, and the other thing is on the type of guy that always answers the phone, you know, even if it's telemarketers. I'm always all let

them do their speed. By the way, answering the phone kids, because nobody does that. There's a good lesson. If I hadn't answered that phone, we probably wouldn't be married for now sixteen or seventeen years. So she heard your voice, she had me on the list to call, and so she knew your name from the audition. Yeah, yeah, and she knew who I was, so she called and I knew it was her and I asked her out to lunch. That's so cute. And might I say that a man

with a really masculine voice is a ted immediately. I don't know how I got my wife. So I think we would be remiss if we didn't talk a little bit about the master chief, about about the name who shut who shall not be mentioned. I think it's necessary. How did hey look come about? Well? For me, it was again going back to radio, I never got bookings based on being on the era as a dis shocking if I had a nickel for re audition, I ever did where the direction was FM radio DJ. Okay, I

was an FM radio DJ. Never once booked one of those jobs. I've had that happen, don't I've literally had it. Sounds like him possible and I didn't book it. Yeah yeah, really yeah, yeah, oh yeah yeah. You get that a lot Wilford L type. What is that? Really? Do you ever? Of course? Okay, so we've all got it. Does an FM radio DJ sound like? What does an FM radio DJ? Sulman um FM? The drive that was led Zeppelin? Good evening? Everybody glad you with us? Yes, that's really cool. I

almost forgot how to do it. That's really cool. It comes right back. But anyway, Marty O'Donnell, who was the who wrote all the music for the Bungee Halo games and cast all the talent I used to listen to me on the radio and you know, just called me. I mean it was that flu again these are all flu things, called me and said would you want to read for this part? Uh? And I came in and it was a done deal and uh we talked about who master Chief was and what Halo was and what

the universe was all about. And he and we didn't even have a visual rendering of what the character looked like, so it was just really just us talking about it. And his direction to me was he said, think of clean Eastwood in all the old spaghetti westerns. Now a few kids out there Spaghetti West. Well I knew that was coming, so um, but that's what it was, Clean Eastwood. You know in those parts he didn't speak a lot,

but when he did, somebody usually died. Yeah. Yeah, So that's where we started with master Chief and then and then it developed into what it developed. But uh, it was just again just important to be ready because you never know when lightning is going to strike now do you feel like your character has grown into a more human place with all of the franchise growing over all this time and all the right. Wasn't there a lot

of movies animated stuff? And yeah, the Fall of Reach was an animated piece, and now they're doing is there a live I'm like my crazy live action, but but this these things can be true, Christian, Okay, so is there a human I don't know, is there a humanization that happens to just a video game character when the technology from the time you started has grown to be

so so different? Well, without a doubt, Um, you know, in the in the early days, I mean, he really didn't speak much, and it wasn't really an opportunity to do much with it until we got to about Halo three. Uh. And then when Halo four came out. That's what people always asked me what my favorite game was? What was for because I had more lines? And yeah, so uh. But also we went much deeper into the story and

and the relationship between Master Chief and Cortana. And I always felt while I was doing Halo, even the early games, how rich this story was, that there was so much just the relationship between Cortan and master Chief was multi layered and and and could go in so many different directions. And I remember when Halo three was over, I thought that was it, you know, I thought we were done and that has been a great ride and all that.

Uh and then had the opportunity when when three four three took it over and come back for Halo four, and then saw the script for it and said, oh, okay, now we're gonna get a little more meaty here, and we're gonna have you know, you talk about some emotional things. And uh so it was yes, the answer your question. It became a lot more layered, a lot more interesting, you know, quite honestly. And I think Infinite carried that into the next level as well, so the latest game. So, um,

when did you know it? Was there a time that you knew when you're like, okay, wait, we really got something here. No, well, uh, first of all, I'm not a gamer. I'm the worst Halo player on Earth. That the irony of the day. However bad you may think you are, I'm worse. Uh. And uh so there I wasn't really involved in the in the gaming world. So about a good year. It had to be after Combat Evolve came out. I was at a friend's house and their kids were playing the game, and uh, you know,

I walked. I was walking through the living room and I just something rang a bell and I said, you know, I think I voiced a character in that game. And the kids said, who wasn't? And I couldn't remember his name? You know, I mean, you know how it is when you know you do you know how many times this happened to you? Will you read anything and you leave the office, leave the studio, whatever, and you couldn't remember

a single line you just read? Yeah, and I couldn't remember the character's name and they said, well, I said, but I think it was kind of the main guy in the game, and they said, was Master Chief? I said yeah. You know, within fifteen minutes, every single kid in the neighborhood who had an Xbox or a copy of the game was at his front door wanting to get it signed. And that was the AHA moment, you know that that I was onto something here that that

But even Bungee didn't know. They you know, they had no plan to make a Halo two. One of the higher ups within the organization, in fact, had a rule against sequels. He didn't he would. He said, we're never doing a sequel to anything one and done for well, Microsoft said, could we have a word? Yeah, yeah, you were some money because we kind of think this whole Halo thing has legs, you know, and so yeah, they really had to be convinced into, uh, you know, doing

the second game. So they weren't. It wasn't ready, you know, it wasn't like they wrote combat evolved with the idea that there would be a second game. Sure, and then there was, it was and here we are twenty some years later. The first one came out in what Wow. So with the live action, have you heard of anything about them wanting to implement like you know, you little old me. Yeah they should, I mean no to be

is the honest answer. Um, you know, the game, the live action takes a very different It's a it's a musical, isn't it a little song and dance? And nobody wants to see me dance? But I think you might be onto something. I think season three, I love it. I love it, but it's uh, it takes a completely different um, not completely different, but it's is a is a pretty different path then what the video game is. And um, so they you know, published driver is is master chief.

They reveal his face and and it's just a different, completely different way to look at the series or the story. But I think he does a great job. I was interested in and I I look at it. I'm a fan of science fiction, so I I just I look, you know, I sit back. I turned on the TV as it entertained me. Yeah, and it did. So I'm anxious to see season two and which I think they're shooting right now. So that's really cool. I mean, I

just remember the thing. The biggest thing about Halo was there were other kind of fully interactive games beforehand, but that was the first one where it was like the whole world. You were just then lost in this world. Well, I think it's you know, and that was the genius of the developers is I think it was, if not the first, one of the first that really took the storyline seriously. It wasn't just a shooter game, you know,

it was there was a story. Now, if you didn't care for the story, you could enjoy you know, you know, they shoot him up part of it. But but if you got interested in the actual storyline, there was a pretty good story there yeah, and it's just gonna keep going and going and going. So in terms of the Energizer Bunny, exactly, that's what kids, the Energizer Bunny. I love the Energizer Bunny. So now you're this, I love

the Energizer Bunny. Yeah. I grew up. I grew up with Energizer Buddy seeing a lot of those commercials and it was just so cute. And then I think he had a voice. He got a voice. At some point I was weird they voiced the Energizer Bunny. Who different podcast? I think I did. It was bad? You know it was bad that somebody say it was bad. I think it was bad. I think it's weird. Okay, I'm strange. So you're this iconic character. You realize this, but you know,

and we obviously love you for all of that. But you have such an amazing voice. Are there things that you would want to do? Is there a care that you would absolutely want to play? Yeah? Dream character. You get to be anybody you want, not movie guy, not the I'll be honest with you, the only character that comes to mind would be the arbiter in in the the Keith David character. Because, first of all, I'm a

Keith David geek. I I did a convention with him years ago in Atlanta, and I'm just such a fan. I'm a fan of his of his acting work, and I'm definitely a fan of his voice stuff. And so we did, you know, we did panels together and all that, and I was total fanboy. But he's a cool guy and and I just and I think the the Arbiter's character is is a very rich, uh complicated character. And then the relationship between and Master Chief, uh, you know,

took took some great turns. So I suppose that. But you know, I'm I'm fortunate enough to have be connected with a pretty pretty big character. I would say, I just I can't think of somebody I would rather do be. So it wouldn't be the Energizer Bunny, No, yeah, but he'd be an amazing energizer. Can you imagine that voice coming out of the Energizer Bunny energy. He's a ten energizing immediately obvious. So much for joining. Hey, what a gas and what a privilege to be honest with you guys.

Totally cool and we know you're gonna go and you've got to go see your thousands of fans. Well yeah, wait, I think we have a few in there, but yeah, what a gain. And I think what you guys are doing with this is just such a great original idea and an opportunity for people to sort of understand what we do on on a on a on a little deeper level, not just on the old wow the character, but you know what happens, you know underneath that. And and you guys have do such great work. And I'm

a fan of both of your work. So it's a privilege to be here. Thank you for coming today. Thank you. Let's do it again. So he said, he said, hear that, he said he'd come back. That would be amazing. Thank you by see a right, wow, that was amazing, right you hear so many different stories, origin stories from from people and love is there's so many different ways to get into it. Like, I know this sounds ridiculous, but

I was he was talking. I was thinking to myself, I wonder if in twenty or thirty years, one of the biggest voice actors in the world is going to sit on a on a panel. And I know it sounds ridiculous, but I want to contest like he did. And now I am like the biggest voice. I mean, you never know, you never know. You listen if you're not in line right like what he said, You know he don't ever get out of line, is not what

he saying? Yeah, yeah, we gotta listen back to the podcast to get the exact words of what because they're awesome. We'd like to now bring up our next special guest. Joe, are you out there? Hey, thank you for joining us again. Always a pleasure. Is the one handed artist right now? Um and still amazing. You guys know Charlie the Darkest Tuna. He created Charlie the Darkist Charlie. Yes, it's extremely talented. And what Joe will do is just start drawing. So

Joe's gonna start drawing. But anybody who wants to voice some characters to line up at this front microphone. So who's going to join us? All right? Come on? I know really see people at our at our tables. Here we go, and I encouraged all of you to come because we love you guys for coming. It's so exciting. I love it. Joe is already ripping it up. This is great. This is gonna be a good practice for when you guys are on our our actual game show portion for when we actually go. So here we go.

All right, Remember we're keeping it all family friendly people, all right, so what are we doing here? We go on top of it? Okay, inns, all right, here's our first one. Ready, here we go. Oh I love take it away. Well, first, your name Scott, Scott? What do you got for us? A mouse? Not not not a mouse? No no, no, no, no no no, not a mouse. Let me let me go away, let me go away? Not a mouse? Nice? That was really good. I really like that quite a lot. Save all these, so let's

definitely save these. So what we always like to say is when you're approaching the character, it can be any range of energy or against type, and like, I really like that. That's the joy is you never know, there's no wrong. Am I gonna get to do some two? Ago, you're gonna get to do none, We're gonna you're gonna do zero. And that's just the way that it is. Actually, Christie, what would you do? Oh no, not that one? No no, no, come on, what do you want? No? You can't say no,

I just did. Come on, I need to have some agency in this relationship. But I am impossible. What do you got? What you got? I said, okay, fine? Whatever? M yeah, so like it? I don't like it. I'm gonna name him Will. There you go. That was a good one, thanks, guys, I said, non Christy. Ready, here we go. That's a really good picture of Will. Nice. That's me, that's me. I like it. So what's your name? Hi? I'm Billy, Hey, Billy, nice to meet everyone. Do you

got I don't really care. I don't have time, but this What are you looking at? And what are you looking at? Bad? I don't care about any of this. See. Yes, I was really good. Yeah, I said, talented? Is loco? You guys are so talented. For some reason, when I saw this, my head went to this tattoo actually hurt a lot more than I thought it was gonna. I love that against type exactly. Alright. Ready, wow, it's all I have to say to this one. This is interesting. Ready,

he's so talented. Okay, great, my name is Kate, Kate. What do you got? We never said it was easy? Well, I think if we're going to go to this panel, we should probably line up pretty soon. Let me just dust this off for you guys right now. And I think. I think I'm gonna get your folders together and make sure we have everything in order. Okay, you may go on the stage now, yeah, hey, you love that. I would go deputy dog kind of. No, No, this is

a clip on both time. What's your name? I am Matthew, but you can call me a big clot Okay, okay, obvious reason. It's a good one. How about this one? Well? Oh god, this childer is delicious.
