Round Two!

thank you. Yeah, it was well, it was hard not to because we had such great folks, you know, we had Dylan and we had Julia, and Julia was you know, obviously she was talented, but it was great. We just we just had to eliminate somebody. So today again we had our first winner. But yeah, Dylan, Dylan from Dylan from Louisiana, our first moving on to the Round of Elite eight. But I was so again We've been talking about this contest for a long time now, yea, And

I was so happy with how Round one went. I'm was so invested and engage, and the talent was so good. And it was just Eg was there. And now we have another celebrity guest coming and helping us this week with two new contestants. This is like the coolest thing that's going on right now. For me, it is so awesome. I think that it's going so well that I'm like, wait a minute, but why is it going so nice?

Spoken like a true glass is half empty kind of person, like, wait a minute, I know, but like but really though, I think, I think when when you care about something and you put the work in um and and again, it does come down to community. We have such a great community. And speaking of community, I just wanted to shout out to Troy for Vicky, who has been hitting

you know, the Last of Us publicity trail. I've been seeing him pop up everywhere and it's been so wonderful to see him, um take to the live action portion of Last of Us because I'm a fan of the actual show and he's like really just parts of him and his interviews have mentioned about how when he was in the studio growing up in Texas, he said something like, oh well I just say baby girl, and then that literally made it to the live action show. You know,

that's cool. He's not on the live action show, right, I'm sorry. I don't watch it and I don't haven't played. Okay, he is he is. Oh that's awesome. Yeah, he mentioned that in our interview too, and I I was so excited to see him finally pop up and he had this little arc or whatever, and it was that's great, really though. It was really cool to be like, I

know him and he law. I'm not going to give any spoilers away, yeah, don't no spoilers, no spoilers, because I will watch it, especially now that Okay, he's a really good actor. Man. Oh, he's a great actor. He's super talented, super talented. And that reminded me of the fact. And also there's a lady who's Bokaton right um, and she apparently was um. Bokaton, I guess is a character in the Star Wars universe, right, okay, and the Mandalorian and she she's a she's okay, well, she's a Mandalor

and she's kind of a rogue royal Mandalor. Well, Mandalor's a place, Mandalorian is the people, Mandalora's the planet. Yeah, perfect, thank you. I'm nerd enough to know that. And she I guess I just realized this too, that she was also a voice actress who made it to live action.

And you know, John Favreau is super excited to have her, and it's so cool to see our community sort of because of the level of talent and acting that and also just a professionalism, right like she wouldn't want to they wouldn't want to work with Troy and and and her if like it was like they weren't a difficult thing. Yeah, no, no, I agree. I think it's great. Um, and we're gonna find the next one, and we're looking for the next one to join our community, which I'm so excited about,

I really am. I first want to once again very briefly tell you that we are going into round two of the super awesome contest to become the next big voice actor. But first of all, we have to meet our celebrity judge for the day. He is one of the best in the business ever, not exaggerating that in any way, shape or for him. He is also a friend of the podcast. He is so graciously agreed to come back and help us decide who's moving on to the next round. Who's joined us today? Christy, oh my, like the Goat, Robert Paulson. Rob Paulson's here, Let's get into it. Wow, wait a minute, the Goat, the Goat, the greatest. Wait

a minute, the greatest of all time. Okay, good, Hi kids, nice to see you. Well, Hi Christie, nice to see you. Thank you firstly for having me back and secondly for giving me this opportunity to help and something that is so exciting. This is so cool. We are so just over the moon that you're here to help us for round two. So just a little bit so you know what's going on. We bring we bring in the two contestants. We bring them in one of the time, okay, and

we play a little game. In our first game for everybody out there who joined us last week, it is the same game but with different lines. So the game we play is called by the Numbers, and what we are going to do with your help, Rob is you are going to pick numbers from several categories. We have a size category, what are you category, an age category,

and a wacky attribute category. By picking random numbers, we're going to take those four numbers that you picked and that will create the characters that then our contestants have to voice. Two of their three lines were given to them ahead of time, so they have the lines, but they don't yet have the characters they're going to be doing, which will be creating on the spot. Then as a fun third round, they are thrown a line they have not seen and we'll have to do a cold reading

with a new character that we create. And then we would love for you, just because of your amazing expertise in the industry, We would love for you after each round if you want to give them some notes, maybe tell them a few things they need to do to focus or slow down or what you know, whatever you think it's going to be, and then we'll give them a chance to read the line again and we will

then deliberate and see who moves on. Last week we had Dylan from We had two amazing contestants last week, and Dylan from Louisiana absolutely just killed it with everything we threw at them. So we have two contestants coming in today, So here we go. We are going to bring in contestant number one. This is Hayden from Washington. He Hayden. Hello, Hey, Hayden, how are you doing good? thank you you do radio at all or anything local radio? Hayden, I do not actually congratulations on being here. We had thousands, literally thousands of entries, yes, Rob over forty two hundred entries shut the front door. Are you kidding me? Forty two hundred entries? And it took us forever. We whittled it down to the top sixteen, Hayden, So congratulations on making the top sixteen. Wow, thank you guys so much.

It's a huge honor. First of all, this is Rob Paulson, the legendary Rob Paulson will be our guest judge today and we'll be giving you some notes. But Rob, I'm also not sure you're aware. I was just gonna say this, young lady, talented, young lady has lowered her standards to allow me to be wonderful friends, not unlike Christian Will Danielle, it's a pleasure to meet you officially. You are a remarkably gifted young woman. Thank you so much. That's amazing.

I'm not on TikTok, so I'm not on TikTok. So I did not I just heard I would just hear auditions and we would be picked from there. So I did not know that you're on TikTok at all. I'm on TikTok And this truly was a blind We did a blind casting here. Yeah. Exciting. Oh well, this is so exciting. I feel I feel a little more at ease because, funny enough, I've known Rob a little bit longer, so I'm like, oh my gosh, there's somebody here I know. I agree. All right, So here we are. We are.

I've not heard that today yet has created a character for you. So here is the character you are going to be putting on the first line of dialogue that we you. Okay, So you are a medium sized Mirr person. So you live underwater. Okay, you are five years old and your wacky attribute is the

love of your life just left you. Oh okay, So again, do with this character whatever you want, whatever you can. We'll hear what you can do, and then Rob's going to give you some notes and we're going to go from there. So all right, do you do? You do? You want to hear what the character is? Again? Are you good? I just have Hayden if you wouldn't mind doing it again, buddy, take a breath and do it again them This is a little bit of you know, pressure, because you're it's it's something that's not sort of usually in your wheelhouse. I think we owe it to you to take a breath and get just get another crack at it. Not that that wasn't good, Christian and will

will know this. I've not yet metacasting person or director who's had a problem if I start working and I was stumbling all over myself or my mind's going and getting ahead of my voice, and I say, I'm sorry, do you mind if I start over? Not ever have I had anybody hold that against me. So uh, frankly, you owe it to us and yourself to be as on point as possible, and if that means taking a breath, do that. So I just would love to have you get another shot at it. Okay, Christy, do you have

any notes with there your emotional state. I think you definitely nailed your emotional state. And then I think I think sometimes too when we when we choose to do bold choices as these characters, like a five year old could creatively not sound like a five year old, you know, like we could do a five year old mere person, but it sounds like a you know, forty year old veteran, like you know, smoking a cigarette. But you know, make that choice. We love bold choices. Okay, okay, I agree.

I would say, you know, I'm gonna go with both the notes that both Rob and Christy just gave you, and I think you do. Just need to take a breath and give it one more shot and remember to hit your beats and I think that's after that, I think you're going to be good. So let's give it one more shot, all right, Hayden? Okay, again, she can plan however she likes. She's five years old. However, you however you want, and your wacky attribute is you are currently hypothermic, hypothermic tiny dog. So you yep, you are a tiny five year old hypothermic dog. Well you don't know that, you know. What's however she wants to do it, Danielle, it is up

to you. Your first line, please and at your pleasure. Okay. Oh, let's video air line now we need today for going on. What's next saying Oh, unfortunately we're losing you. Unfortunately we're losing your your audio. Oh yeah, I don't know if it's a it's a function of it seem to be when she was raising her voice or being more Yes, we we had this same problem last time. Some of the mics are not picking up the higher registers the

way that we did it. Hush and maybe maybe just play it a little bit off Mike and a little farther back, and we'll see if we can get because I don't think we have any notes at this point, because we want to make sure that we hear the performance that you want to give us. So once more, for the audience, we are You are a dog, you are five years old, you have you are tiny excuse me, a tiny dog that's five years old, and you are currently hypothermic. I think it was I think you've I felt the age, I felt the hypothermia. You could easily animate a dog to

that voice. Rob Any notes no same thing, and you when you're dealing with technical issues like that, especially under this circumstances. Very Danielle, it's you did a really excellent job. It also helps that when you're a nurse, I've actually treated Patience with hypothermia. So here you go. Perfect. All right, Well, thank you so much. We will be right back to you. second character, you are small cat. You are ten years old, and you're shocked suck. Okay, just for my own edification, is that is that literally like he's been the cat has been shocked or shocked in terms of like oh oh my god. That's sort of I guess it's however, he wants to play it cool. Totally up to you dealer's choice. So okay, Hayden the second line, please at

your pleasure. So well, sorry. So there was sitting on my own park bench, feeding the birds, mining my own business, when what do I see some guy in a suit going to the phone booth across the street. Well, take off the suit, walk out in his pajamas and then fly into the air. What is going on in this city? I love? You're actually playing it like you're getting shocked, mister Paulson. Any notes. As Will has suggested earlier, there

are no parameters. This is all literally up to you, and we've not even given you a context in which this character performs. So I would like to hear you do one that's as big as you can do it. I say that because it's I had the good fortune of directing a couple of series as well, and often people aren't personally aware of how big big it is for them. So just for the exercise, and I'd love to hear you do that and make everything still be

clear understood. Have your choices been clear and bold, as Christian Will have suggested, But I would like to have you do one just really big. Okay, I love that. Let's go with that and see what happens next. So completely Hayden at your pleasure. Great, all right, all right, So do I was sitting on my favorite park bench,

When when do I see some kind of suit go into the flowe booth across the street, take off the suit, walk out in eating his pajamas, and then slide straight up into the air. Okay, Danielle is going to be a big alien who is ten years old that has been stuck in traffic for six hours. Wow, interesting ten year old law like big alien who's been stuck in traffic for six hours. Well it's a totally different character if you're only there for five.

AT's right, So it's cooler, all right, Danielle, at your pleasure? All right? So there I am sitting on my favorite parkment to the birds mine in my own business. Why what do I say? Some guy in a soup across the street take off is soup, walk out in this pajamas and then fly into the air. What is going on in their tenny? Pretty good? That was great? Uh? Rob any notes? Could you give us a few more and lows where your everything isn't so projected? You're you're

a little bit you know what I mean that. Let's see. So there I am sitting my favorite part bench feed the birds mine in my own business. What do I see? Some guy in a soup goes into the phone booth across the street, picks off the soup, walks up in his pajamas and then flying them in the air. What is going this siting? That's great? That was great. back to Hayden. Hey, Hayden, how are you. I'm doing just fine? All right, So we have we're gonna throw a little wrinkle at you, my friend. We are going to have a special super secret round three where you have not yet read the line, so because cold reading sometime is very important in the industry, and they might throw something at you last minute. So I don't know if you can see your chat on the zoom. Yes, all right, So as you're reading that, we're gonna have

mister Paulson one more time, sir. Number between one and six, one, number between one and twelve, one, number between one and seven, three, and number between one and eleven four. Okay, So, uh, your character this time with this new new line of dialogue. You are a giant dog. You are ten years old, and you're in the middle of an allergic reaction. Oh dear, interesting. Okay, So there you go once again, giant dog ten years old,

middle of an allergic reaction, Hayden at your pleasure. So so this guy, this guy walks into into the bar the bartenders. Barttenders says, no, wait, that's not it. So this horse walks into the bar with the with the duck under duck under its arm. That's that's that's stunted. Either, Let's try this again. This horse walks into a bar to get to the other side. Nail. That was good.

I definitely felt like he was choking on something. Yeah, and in mid anaphylactic shock was certainly is certainly interesting. Rob Any notes, Actually, my new stage name is Anaphylaxis. I like that. I like that name on the Give It a Shot tour. Thank you. Yeah, that well as always really nice. My friend, could you do one where you you're let's do one where your nose uh is kind of stuffed up because you are you really are dealing with the allergy thing and your eyes are watering,

and however that would affect your speaking. Okay, you know, however, you can come up with something to be an authentic nose lug up if you have hay fever. You know, people who do it can be miserable and that can be reflected in the sound of the character. Okay, I would also add, just very quickly, I would also add, and we didn't I didn't push you on this last time, but I'd like to see a little more of the

range of the care of the age. Okay, so let's see if we can see a little bit of the ten you here, a little bit more of the ten year old this time in this take. How about you Christian? And then Hayden, like your your you have a really great microphone that you're using today. Could you please just like talk into the microphone and don't worry about looking

at us for first round? Okay, sure, yeah, just really use that microphone so we could really hear your tone and don't worry about looking at us or seeing us. Just kind of get lost in like what we've heard in your audition. That's a great that's a very point.

And often especially with with on camera folks who come into do cartoons, um for obvious reasons, they're used to engaging characters to the left or to the right, and sometimes something as simple as the director or the engineers saying, um, hey, Rob, you know what we'll take care of that. Um, if you wouldn't mind, just please keep your head forward. You can move around and gesticulate all you want, but we'll handle it. So you really, everybody wants you to be

dealing with what is best for Hayden. Okay, great, great point, CHRISTI sure, thank you allre you ready, Hayden, And take a bar before you go. Yeah, don't rush into it, all right, perfect, at your pleasure. So this guy wasts into a bar bartendersis No, wait, that's not it. So this this this horse he walks into the bar with the duck unders arm. No, that's not it either. Let's try this again. Sorry, this this horse walks into a bar to get to the other side. There we go.

That was great. You took all the direction very well, I thought, there, Hayden, thank you, thank you. All right, we'll be right back with you. That was great, Christy, because he did he played, he played into the microphone more and we were able to hear it more and hear his tone a little better. And that was a great note. Yeah, I think so much of this has to do with being able to understand booth at a kid, and yeah, sure you know. And yeah, I think I

That was That was great, Danielle, really really good. One thing I would like to to hear um just I would add some I remember, you're afraid of your own shadow. Let's add a little bit of fear um into the reading. But other than that, I got nothing else. Rob yeah, I uh, Sam as well, just pig because we can.

Would you throw your choice your choice some sort of not necessarily a dialect, but something that might be specific to a certain area of the country or another country or whatever. The only reason I say that is because I've had more than a number of characters in which I've been able to work and get jobs simply because and I know this has happened to Christie and Will. We're not limited by what we think the people on

the other side of the glass want. And I say that specifically with respect to Pinky, and Pinky was one of those that I had all kinds of stuff to try. I was a big fan of the pythons. They were very instrumental in developing my sense of human my desire to work on dialects and weird things and placements and all that. And it turned out to be a nice gig. So those are that may be something you come up

without the bat. But this is a good opportunity when when a producer says, man, Danielle, you're giving us everything we like we want. We're diving it like Weill said, you did everything we asked for. Have you got anything? So whatever it is that this is an opportunity, you say, yeah, I'm gonna try this, and you never know if that's going to separate you from the pack a bit. I got you, all right. So this guy walks into a box and the box and just said, no, no, wait,

god's not Oh. So this horse walked into a bar with a duck under its honor. No, no, oh, let me try agenda. This horse walked into a bar to get to the other. That's great. Yeah, I mean yeah, that's great. Great, And and it sounds all of a sudden, we got a mouse from Boston. Yeah, exactly, it sounded like is its Archie Bunker's wife just gonna say it sounded exactly like. Yeah, it sounded just like you. That is a voice. That's a voice I developed when I

played Audrey a little. That's exactly so because there's a different there's a difference between Bath and ba you know what I mean. Archie would say, well where's the bar Edith, but Billy or somebody from Boston will say, where's the back back? Yeah? Thank you, daniel I appreciate it. We'll be right back with you. It is time to deliberate. We're open and honest with with what we hear and what we've talked about, and we with the contestants that are coming it is it's so awesome that they've made it to the top sixteen. They're all uber talented. We said at the beginning, all sixteen of the people that we picked could be signed tomorrow. Forty two hundred people. Yeah, it was crazy. It was absolutely crazy. Ok. You got that alone. Is a herculean

task that you guys took on. It was a lot and we listened to every single entry, so both it was a lot. It did, but it was worth it. And I'm going to be totally honest because we've said from the beginning that doing voices is wonderful, but first and foremost, you're a voice actor, and I have to

say that overall, Danielle just is a better actor. Yes, That is not to say that Hayden is not could not learn, because you know, I think he if he takes some classes and kind of works a little bit more on his acting, he might have something because especially his natural speaking voice is great. And I've I've often said I don't do fifty voices. I am not that guy. I can't do fifty voices, And a lot of the voices I do are very similar to my own voice.

So you can have a very good career soundunding like yourself. But those opportunities to know how to step outside yourself and fully invest yourself into a character are things that traditionally have happened as a result of live performance. She I think was clearly the better contestant today. Yea, And the winner of this round is Danielle from Tennessee. Who Okay, So, why don't we why don't we bring in Well, let's bring in Hayden first. Why don't we Why don't we

do that? Hey, Hayden, how are you good? How you guys doing not too bad? You asked that question. How are you from the last seven minutes we've not seen? Yeah, just a little bit better. Yeah, but that's the idea. Just get better and better. Hey, did we want to congratulate you so much on making it this far. You did a great, great job today. But unfortunately this is going to be the end of the line in the contest for you or the person and you were up against.

She was just really wonderful today. Um. But please please do not stop. Yeah, because you're you're very good at what you do. Your natural voice, your natural register, that the pipes that you were gifted with are phenomenal. Um. Do you have any background performance wise, I mean apart from a desire to do voice work, and you're clearly a bright young man with it, as as Will said, a gifted instrument. Um, I don't, actually, it's just honestly

just doing voices for friends. Over the years. Um, I've had a few jobs where I've like announced things to people, like racetracks. I was calling races out and stuff like that. Your voice is so clear and your enunciation your articulate to the extent you would like to pursue this, and honestly, this is the right now. The best reason to do it is because it makes you so happy. That is

the most the noblest of reasons to pursue it. However, should you just I had to pursue this, I would definitely avail yourself if you're interested of maybe doing either finding or putting together an improv group where you learn to think on your feet and create characters on the spur of the moment. That experience will never not serve you well. When you're able to think and speak extemporaneously, your ability as an actor, thinking on your feet will make you at ease, and it will also make you

a better actor. But man, I'll tell you what for somebody who just says, hey, this sounds like fun. Yeah, really great, pal, Yeah, I really appreciate that. Guys, thank you. Now we said, we said from the beginning Hayden that the sixteen people that we picked and again from over thousands to sixteen all could be signed. You really, this is not something. If this is something you want to pursue, Rob is right, you should, and I would look into an acting class. I would look into an improv class

because you've got the natural. You've got something that can't be taught, which is the natural pipes. Um So, I think if you work a bit on on the acting and the improv, I think you know, sky's the limit. Really I agree. My final thought too, is it's just making those bold choices and and and really having fun with it going forward. And yeah, just this, this doesn't have to be the end of the line for you. It's just a matter of your next step. Thank you, Hayden. Yeah,

with both feet your background in theater. That really was a really wonderful thing for people who are listening to the podcast to see two people who are talented, but the one who has the experience that allows you to become yes and become unself conscious. That is to say, Danielle has nothing to do with the character that I'm There's no I hope this is. There's no. You're not reticent. You go for it, and that's because you have you have training, you have acting jobs, you have experience, and

that will serve you really well. Great job, Thank you, And if I'm wrong, I can be totally confident in my wrongness. It's fine, forgive me. But I gotta say this because when these guys are nice enough to I've been I'm an old Hollywood dog and the number of times I've gotten a job where at the end of the audition the producers got anything else. As I said,

I sure do Boom boom boom, boom boom. Great, thanks Rob, and then I'll get a call Rob, you didn't get the job because what you did was really not right for this. However, your choices were so clear, and we're going to stash this away. And this has happened three times I can think of over my career where literally a year, sometimes too later, will the producer call my agents say, hey, wanted Rob come and read this. I'm not working. I was at Disney when I met him before.

Now I'm at Warner Brothers. I think I got something for him. Hey Rob, remember but no, I don't here. This is what you did that was wrong? Can you do that again? Sure? And I get the job. Yeah. So those opportunities are are You're not, as they say, you're not auditioning just for that particular job. Yeah, oh exactly. So you know, thank you, thank you, congratulations on making it to the next round contest to become the next

big voice actor. So that's uh, it's great. We can't we can't wait to see where it goes from here. Thank you so much for joining us, and we will see you next round the job kiddo, than you welcome, Daniel.
