I Could Never Do That

Carrie Barrettwww.podpage.com
"Whether you think you can or you think you can't, you're right." How many times have you heard of a "dream job," an extraordinary athletic feat, or even a benevolent vocation that someone has and thought to yourself, "I Could NEVER Do That!" These people don't have superpowers, per se. These normal folks simply have a huge desire to do what it is they're doing and they ultimately have an unwavering faith that they can achieve their goals, no matter how big. Remember, courage isn't the absence of fear. Courage is "going in" in spite of your fears. These are the stories of people who have gone in and fought hard to achieve the unthinkable in spite of the fact that, yes, sometimes they are scared and do have some insecurities. Are you ready to go in? It's my hope that after hearing some of these interviews with thought leaders, artists, athletes, musicians and entrepreneurs that maybe you too will go from, "I Could Never Do That" to, "I Could Do That."

15 Helen Susannah Webb & Caroline Gaynor - Kona’s Dynamic Duo

In April 2017, Helen Susannah Webb became the first visually impaired female athlete to complete Ironman South Africa. Born with a genetic condition that results in sun sensitivity and visual impairment, Webb knew that if she ever had the lucky opportunity to race in the United States, she wanted experienced American, Caroline Gaynor, to be her guide. They got their chance this past October when Webb was selected as one of only five physically impaired athletes to compete at the Ironman World Ch...

14 Susan Lacke- Life’s Too Short To Go So F*cking Slow

From Susan's Website: They were unlikely friends. She was a young, overweight college professor with a pack-a-day habit and a bad attitude. He was her boss, and an accomplished Ironman triathlete. She was a whiner, he was a hardass. He had histogether, she most assuredly did not. Yet Susan and Carlos shared a deep and abiding friendship that traversed life, sport, illness, death, and everything in between. Amusing and poignant, Life’s Too Short To Go So F*cking Slow is about running and triathlo...

Of course they do because these are just some of the pros you see at the top of the podium at major races and World Championships. This week’s guest is Austin based journalist Pam LeBlanc . I’m not gonna lie, she kinda has my dream gig...getting paid to try new sports, activities, hikes and other crazy adventures. 11 Lesley Paterson and Simon Marshall: Becoming A Brave Athlete

This week, we throw the phrase “I Could Never Do That” right out the window! I’m affectionately referring to this episode as my conversation with the bad and the smart couple, Lesley Paterson and Simon Marshall, PhD . Lesley is a 3X World Champion in off-road triathlon , an Ironman Champion, pro mountain biker and endurance coach. Her husband, Simon, is a former professor of family and preventive medicine at University of California, San Diego and a professor of sport and exercise psychology at ...

10 Susan Gibson and Jana Pochop - Singer/Songwriter Secrets

In this episode of "I Could Never Do That," I interview singer/songwriters Susan Gibson (who wrote the Dixie Chicks "Wide Open Spaces") and Jana Pochop . They discuss their craft of songwriting and how, even during the toughest of times, they continue to curate new ideas and songs that inspire, teach and heal. Songwriting is, no doubt, an endurance sport. It takes a tremendous amount of talent, passion and strength to build those muscles of creativity. In many ways, they are OUR voice. Music hea...

9 and Jill Beardsley - Triumph, Tragedy, Tranquility

Distance Running Legend, Beardsley , is an America hero, having won a string of marathons in the early 1980s, including the London Marathon in 1981 and Grandma's Marathon in both 1981 and 1982. He's most famous ironically, though, for losing a marathon: The infamous "Duel in the Sun" 1982 Boston Marathon, where he and Alberto Salazar went step for step for 26.2 Miles. It was a colossal race finish that left an indelible imprint on the minds and hearts of running fans forever, truly illustrating ...

8 From Big to Little: Marcus Cook

Marcus Cook lives by the quotes, "Do Something New Every Day" because "You Never Know What You're Preparing Yourself For." Two years ago, inspired by the dying wish of a friend, then 500lb Marcus Cook made a drastic change. He knew if he didn't act quickly, he wouldn't be around to see his kids grow up and have families of their own. In September 2015, Cook had gastric bypass surgery with renowned bariatric surgeon, Dr. Garth Davis , in Houston, Texas. And, less than two years later, Marcus cros...

7 Prothro Family Wines - Bruce and Ronda Prothro

The Prothro Family Wines Website says it best: " Life is about the experiences you have and the stories you tell... and the wine you drink." Ronda and Bruce Prothro love wine. They love the work, the science, the chemistry, and the art of creating a classic wine, giving people a full and well-rounded experience with each sip. They first started making wine together in their garage back in 1991 in Los Gatos, CA, picking, pressing, mixing, stirring, fermenting, and bottling...they did it all. It w...

6 Just Kusko - Happy Tiger Tales

This week’s interview subject is just as endearing, whimsical and unique as the adventure she’s on. Most of us have heard of “Where in the World is Carmen Sandiego” or “Where in the world is Matt Lauer,” right? A lot of us are also familiar with the Flat Stanley cartoon that elementary aged kids send around the world to learn about travel and geography. Well, my friend Kusko has taken these two concepts of travel and discovery to the next level...for charity...with her Happy Tiger Tales Adventur...

4 I Could Never Do That (Yet!) - Laurie Allen, Team Yet, and a Return to Triathlon

We've got a party, a celebration, in this episode of "I Could Never Do That," which I'm affectionately changing to "I Could Never Do That (Yet!)" for this show. Two-and-a-half years ago, a freak fall rendered Laurie Allen, a nine-time Ironman, a quadriplegic. The accident may have broken her neck, but it didn't break her spirit or will to return to the sport she loves. On August 6th, 2017, Laurie did return to triathlon at Jack's Generic Tri in Austin with the help of her tribe, "Team Yet!" In t...

3 Adam Sud - A Journey From Pills To Plants

Adam Sud has certainly lived a lifetime in his 32 short years. This podcast is called "I Could Never Do That" and it's appropriate to get to know Adam because: 1) I'm not sure how many of us could comeback from the depths of despair in which he found himself as a clinically depressed, morbidly obese, young adult addicted to fast food and pills. 2) How many of us could then build the new life that he has built in the last five years; a life that is full of inspiration, conviction, and purpose? Ir...

2 Chuy Amaya - Decoding the Deca Ultra Triathlon

My guest this week is Chuy Amaya from Austin, Texas. By all standards, Chuy is a normal guy. He's 32-years-old, works a full-time job, has his Masters Degree, etc. What sets him apart? It isn't just the fact that Chuy is an ultra-endurance fanatic. His favorite event? Well, he's currently training for the Deca Ironman in Mexico taking place this October. Yep. That's right. A full Iron-distance race (2.4 mile swim, 112 mile bike, 26.2 mile run) for 10 days in a row. What possesses someone to do t...

1 Katy Dooley Baxter - Goddess of The Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming

My guest today is Katy Dooley Baxter, one of only a small handful of people in the world to have completed the Triple Crown of Open Water Swimming . This includes swimming the 21-Mile Catalina Channel , the 20.2 Mile English Channel and the 28.5 Mile Manhattan Island Marathon Swim . Anyone who knows Katy can attest that she's actually quite the dichotomy of human beings. She's one of those rare combinations of being both tough and stubborn on one end of the spectrum and then completely tender an...
