Speaker 1

I am all in. That's you. I am all in with Scott Patterson and I Heart Radio podcast. Hey everybody, Scott Patterson, I am all in podcast. It's very very early in the morning in southern California. But my intrepid crew, Danielle Romo from the Berkeley Hotel, Amy Sugarman, Tara Suit they have all decided to join me once again. I am so appreciative. Good morning, ladies, Good morning. It's a big day. It's a big day. Why is it a big day. Oh, because it's a it's a season prem

isn't it. It did not. It did not, It did not, it was It was in a laugh right. It was hysterical. Actually it felt like though I will say, let's let's pretend to that normal episode. I know you guys know this how many pages or whatever? How many words pages per script? This felt and sixty pages. That's more pages than a normal hour show. And this felt like double that. This felt like it had So I was like, yeah,

I have one random question. So like, luckily for us, we don't have to wait months for the next season, you know, to watch the next episode. What is that on the acting end? Like do you go right into another season or take time off, we take the summer off. It's like high school. Yeah, oh that's so cute. Yeah, so we did. We did freshman, sophomore, junior, senior, and then we got our graduate degrees. Then we got a masters, and then we did a PhD. I've always wondered that, like,

do actors just go right into the next series season? Okay, no, No, you need a month to recover after shooting for nine months, and the girls probably needed two months or three months to recover. So yeah, people not go and do other things normally because it was so much work. Like you know how some people, some actors do a move in summer. If you can get the work, yeah, you do it. I mean you gotta you know, you gotta strike while

the iron's hot. Right, If you're on the air and somebody wants to work with you on your hiatus, yeah you go run and do it. Sure, Yeah, you suck it up and do it. You know, because after the show's off and the heat's off, you know, those offers dry up, so right right right, they certainly do. Anyway, Um, I was gonna bring up so but we'll move on. Yeah, let's let's move on. Let's move on, all right, Danielle, I guess you'll take us away. He's taking us away. Yeah,

I'll take you away. You're gonna synopsis size for us in the morning. I got some coffee and I'm ready for the synopsis. Okay. Season four, Episode one, Ballrooms in Biscotti Air date September three, lor L and Rory turned from their backpacking trip with loads of gifts for everyone except for Kirk and Luke. Speaking of Luke, he drops a bombshell of what really happened on the cruise with Nicole.

Rory is leaving for Yale sooner than she anticipated, and Taylor gives her a hard time about leaving the town behind. This is the great thing about this episode. They put a clock on it. And I love that when they put a clock on it, right, because what that means, well, you know when they put a time time signature on it. You know, you put a clock on something in a movie, like you know, like Speed It had a clock a day. Yeah, is that bus is going to blow up if it

goes under fifty miles or whatever? You know, if if if it's like you know, and the audience anticipating, oh god, you know, she had to go to school, they had to get yea. So once that clock kicked in, it was like, we're after the races here, and they have so many things to get done in two days are actually one day day and a half, you know, after they found out, oh, she read that, she read it wrong. She read the uh, the orientation let her wrong. The dates got wrong. Oh no, we don't have a week.

We don't have a week. We don't have nine days. I'm going Saturday. And I wonder if that's why I felt like there was double the script, because maybe it wasn't that. Maybe I just felt the like of that's right exactly, Daniel. That's the urgency that was brought to bear on the episode because they put a clock on it, and it's a really clever device, really really clever. So I don't know how you guys felt. I think I

know how Amy feels. I love this episode. I laughed, Uh, I just laughed out loud, heartily, yes and um many many times throughout the script. What did you guys think? I agree? I mean, for one episode, we did not have a mention of Jess or Dean, so it was really much like very much Gilmore Girls you know, between Loria, Lie Rory and Emily, I mean a they're in there too, because between the three of them was like, this is gilmore girls, like I just loved I love that about

this episode. Did you notice both are not in the credits, So the opening credits, no Jess, no Milo, and no Jared Pada Lucky in the credits anymore. I believe this is the first time we've seen Liza in the credits. I could be wrong, and you are third? You move who did? Um? Your name's you did? I? Yeah, so when you know when the opening credits, so first obviously Lauren and then Alexis, and then you've moved up and you are the third one that comes on. I didn't

realize that. And Lauren has sort of the same images in the opening credits, but they put a new you know, video montage of Alexis, and then I think, obviously, I think you had new Oh it's the one where I'm outside the diner. I'm no longer inside the dinner on the pilot serving or the coffee. I have to watch it closer for the next episode, but I know you moved up, and I think Liza was added. I think Eliza I think Liza was in season three. I think she was listed as she was because I want to

say it was in her school uniform. Okay, okay, so like that intro, No Milo, no, Jared's moved up. I didn't think they did that until episode seven. I mean, I'm season seven for for wow, I got her baby, uh, most pooring weird as van driver on the planet. Like he didn't even say goodby, didn't even stop. You mentioned it because I thought, whoa, that's a van driver. Looks frozen like he never I mean, if you're a van driver, wouldn't you say, like have a nice night or I

don't know, and he just well like that. They didn't want to give him. They didn't want to give him a line because they might have to pay. Yeah, and then we come in hot with that. Bet my gosh, what a what a welcome relief that was to finally have Sally Struthers right. Yeah, and a great scene, great scene, morey was funny. That was That was a very funny scene, great old everything was great about it. Yeah, they came in just hot, like you know, it's a season for

me because you're like everything's happening right away. I just can't imagine someone like when I get home from a trip, someone just like walking into my house. Get away. They were They're like, oh, like Rory's like, oh tired, Like she knows she wants to go to bed. That was a nice way of saying, like, get out of the house. But they you. It's important to note that they told her they were going to be home on a certain day. They weren't. She panicked. She's like a very mother a

leaf figured. Yeah, there was no cell phones to text and be like hey we're running a day late, right, They couldn't, but they didn't. I guess they would, you could know, but like it was like that what was it? The anine texting? Yeah, they wouldn't spend the money to call from Europe. The BlackBerry the only the thing I noticed. Did any of you notice this something in Rory's bedroom? M hmm. I think she keeps one of her hats on a lamp, and I feel that that was a

fire hazard. That is a fire hazard. But I was like, I've already been through a fire, right, we don't need another one. Do you guys unpack right away or wait a week? Like lor Lee check right away? I unpacked too, as soon as I can. Yeah, I walk in the I walk in suitcases, open clothes are going in the laundry. How long do you keep your like, how long for you to unpack? Scut? Um? I mean, you know, when we come back from a ski trip, I mean that

stuff is still packed for the last Christmas. Kidding, but you know why. But but there's always there's always a washer dryer in the unit. So I wash everything before we packed, before we leave, and then I just keep it in the suitcase. But the dirt, Yeah, the dirty stuff I take out, but that's in a separate bag. I'm very organized about it that the the the dirty stuff does not touch the clean stuff. So that's a good move. Um, all right, I mean, let's just dig

into it. I just overall, here's an overall. Uh, there's a general observation. Um. And this isn't like a this isn't new to me. It just didn't dawn on me. But it really drives home how fun it is to watch these two girls together. And it's the show, it's and and you know, I kept saying to myself, I could watch this all day, and then I realized people do watch this all day and it's because these two

are so delightful together. And it's just it's just the yin and the yang of these two, because you know, Laurela is so you know, she's she's a bit loud, right, She's she's very present and energetic and full of you know, good vibes and you know, vibrating fun and funny and all this stuff. And and and and Alexa and and Rory is just kind of hanging in there and and commenting, and she's she's so much softer than her mother. And it's just a wonderful combination to watch. It's really funny.

Uh And I thought Alexis was great in this episode. Just ye, well, at first I couldn't figure out what they're doing in this sort of opening scene after the credits, and then then at Donamy, Oh my gosh, they're laying out all the gifts. Yeah, but I do say flag on the play, there is no way they would bring all those gifts, including a gift for backpack and well and forget Kirk. Now Luke they might have struggled with, but they would never forget. I don't buy it, and

I don't think they would have forgot Kirk. I don't think they would have forgot Luke. I was like, how do you forget Luke? Like bring back some coffee beans or something, because I think I think Laurel I was trying to put Luke out of her mind because she was so anxiety written about the potential of what could happen and what eventually did happen exactly on the cruise, I can't wait to get to that scene going order, but I cannot wait to talk about there's so much

to talk about. So they've got their big backpacks on their walking through the town and then we immediately see Luke versus Taylor. Nothing has changed. They're back and it's all the same. And this is our first time we see the window between the two. You know what, I kept thinking, why was he Why was Luke so irate? It's free advertising, like anybody that comes in there. I can look into the diner goal let's go get a pie or let's get a coffee, and you know, kind

of vice versa. But still that's good for that's good for Luke's business. Well, first of all, it is your building, though, and so it seems a little obnoxious they made physical changes to your building without checking with you, no doubt. But I mean he had to see the obvious boon to his business, right, not that he's lacking for customers, but anybody that's in the tailor all day or anyone in the shoppy I was thinking that that Luke just needs to curtain. Yea, just a curtain can open it.

But parted exactly about the candy throwing. I mean it was just sort of like that whole thing was just a big old mess. But I thought it was hilarious. They got out the biscotti two walking. Yeah, I'm not. I can't comment on this. You guys comment on that rant. That was a classic Luke what it? I love the putting his hands through all the candy over the top. But great, Right then we see Suki. Okay, so we see Suki and she's more pregnant, and oh, I know,

what did you think of? Like Suki knows at the boy and Jackson doesn't want to know. Did you find out? Did you know? Yeah? Did I know in real life? I r L. Did you find out if you were having? Oh god, yeah, we knew well ahead. So does anyone think Jackson's making the right call? You know, there are some people that do that, and like, good for them, but my anxiety cannot handle that. I'm too much of

a planner. Yeah, no, we yeah, we. I mean I made the bedroom and and you know, had all the little I think it's little sports equipment ready for him and you know, all that stuff. I just love that Suky had it all in the shed like goes gathering gathering dust. I thought about that. It was a cute concept, just like yeah, and I think it's sort of cute that Jackson doesn't want to know and that Rory linked

up with him. Huh. I wonder if there's some kind of correlation there between you know, when when when Laura Lie and Rory went to Stars Hollow they I mean she was raised in the shed at the Independence Inn, right, that's funny little and then and then and then we got another shed full of baby stuff. So and this is where we learn that something's up, something's up with Luke.

What at that moment did you all think that he was broken up, that it wasn't bad and he was embarrassed by it, or you dumped him on the cruise and you know, went off with Captain Stooping or something. Daniel, what do you think yeah. In the in the beginning, I was like, Okay, something obviously happened on the cruise. What happened? Um, but I thought something embarrassing happened, like whether like I didn't you know, I didn't really know the extent of what we find out at the end

of the episode. But but yeah, in the beginning, I was like, hmm, what happened on that cruise? But I couldn't decide or like, at that point, I couldn't figure out if you know, they were together or something weird happened. I didn't go that far. I couldn't get I thought it was I thought it was gonna be an opportunity for him to start, you know, being a little signed

FELDI like, she's perfect in every way. But you know, okay, okay, you know they didn't go there, right, she stores right, all right, you were going to say something where she me, yeah, this is a little little off topic, but not really. Wasn't Melissa McCarthy actually pregnant during the show. Oh that's such an important note because I just don't know, because I don't know what, like which season, But like, I know I heard it somewhere that she was pregnant. I

just I was wondering, we'll check that. We'll check that, because it didn't look fake. She looked, I mean she looked. It was a good fake. If it was fake, they made her look pregnant. I just felt like I read that suwhere. But anyway, so I think it's um interesting that they that the writers made sure that Suki mentioned something's up with Luke. And I don't know if that was done because we know it immediately when you two

see each other. But so I thought it was an interesting device, like they're giving us this sort of well here comes to narrative. Yeah, the season four or this is going to be a major theme in season four. Here we are? I mean, has Luke ever been set up like this before in an episode? Not really that I can think of. Yeah, now now is the time of Luke. Yeah, so it was it was very um yeah, here we go. Then did you find out Daniel? Yeah, no,

she wasn't so her first I didn't think. Yeah, her first kid was two thousand seven, and this is we're still unless she had were your pregnancy, which God bless her. But now so then we head to the diner, bon jour, Luke, and off we go. So what did you think? What did you guys think of that scene where we finally get to see Luke and Lorala together again. Well, it's certainly um piques your interest in wanting to know what the heck went on because he ran away from it

so many times. But it was a scene. It was a funny scene. Yeah, so okay, So what do you do you think Luke would have told her right away? Or do you think he would have sort of gotta go, I got what's your you know, like, did that feel authentic? I do? No, I don't think he would have done it right there at the count. Yeah. Not not in the diner. No, no, no, no, no no no. He's not like that. He's not all gushy and he needs to talk. And you know, it's like when the time

is right, when he's prodded. You know, he's that guy, that's stubborn guy. You gotta really get it out of him, got to drag it out of him, and she did. Yeah. I wondered if he never wanted to tell her. I mean, obviously probably had to tell her. Let's let's wait till we get to that. I don't want to because I have so much to talk about with that. So we also learned the tailor's losing his mind with the ice cream Queen. I thought, do you think he really would

have been that irritated? Hated he? That was the funniest storyline all She's going to college. It will be so easy. You just have a stage floor length dress. Oh that was the ice cream Queen. Oh my god. They they milk that so beautifully throughout that episode. It was hysterical. That's how great Michael Winters is. And he said, you've been trapesing all over year. I do think the significance has to do with that. They're reminding us audience that she's leaving the town and this is a big deal

to the town. Yet to be ice cream queen, that sounds like a fun job. You get like unlimited ice I want that job. What did you think about the fact that Roy was really bothered by it? I think she's also just stress, you know. I think that had to do with it. She's overwhelmed. Then this is all before she realizes, right, but he did. But he did use her photograph without her authorization, and that's kind of a violations Today, Damiel loves desist a big today if

you're really going to be named the queen. Nobody's gonna go to you ahead of time and go like, do you want to be the queen? Like, wouldn't that be a surprise? No, you gotta ask somebody. You just slapped her face right up there on a poster, big poster, and they were stapling it all over town. And if she has a commitment, yeah, and if she has to have appearances and commitments and stuff like, I just got to sign up for that. It's a big that's a

big responsibility being ice cream queen, Amy. I don't think you realize the level of commitment that takes. So here's what I love about Gilmore Girl. It's hilarious. Bit let's call it like this sort of nonsense about the ice cream Queen, and Taylor's all then a dither and Rory's like, I don't have time, and then she's like, damn, I

letting the town down to me. It's so it is a major thing because at its core it becomes about her relationship with the town and the importance of the town, and even the kids when they walk by, they're like editor on a shamed spiral some and she was what I want to, So I think, like, that's the brilliance, is that you have this quirky craziness right like ice Cream queen, but it's about so much more. That was the way to work into this episode. This is hard on the town, and this is hard on her. Mm

hmm yeah um. But the I mean, that's a that's a common theme in all small towns, like somebody goes off and makes it big and then forgets about that that oh you're too big for us. Now you know we used to call it when I played baseball, is the minor leaguers would look over the fence at the big leaguers, and the big leaguers wouldn't talk to us. They diss us, and it's called getting big league, Like,

don't great analogy, don't big league us man? You know you were You were minor leaguers once too, so stop it. So every it's like, don't forget where you came from. So it's it's a major theme in everybody's lives because everybody's been treating everybody's been treated like that by someone comparison. Okay, so now we find out that we screwed up the calendar to the races, So this is that moment that where you're like, we're off right, the clock starts. As

someone who is so organized, this stressed me out. I put everything in a calendar. So if that was me, I'd be so stressed. Well, she did put in her calendar, but wrong. Yeah, especially like for such a big thing going into college. You got the date wrong? Like that is so stressful. Yeah, try to find the mattress. Yeah, there's so much prep that goes into your first you know, first time at college. You gotta get your mattress, bedsheets. Um, no one needs a mattress. But but I'm so happy

they did because I also was very nervous about the germs. Yeah, I think you do, don't you? Or know? I definitely rolled in with there was a mattress already there that I just did for sure. I slept on a weird old mattress. Yeah, brief pause. The iconic silhouette shirt, Oh yeah, that's a that was a big that was significant because that was just a very cool loreal lines wearing that shirt with the little girl and the little boy in their silhouettes. And then actually Rory had a very cute

pink blouse too. Isn't this fashion stuff going to be done in a separate segment, so I can go to the bathroom and you guys can discuss this. Okay, then let's talk about the beauty supply. Here we see Kirk. I just love that he works there. Again, he had he had good knowledge because I'm now I'm experiencing a little bit of a breakout because I am using a cream that's a little too heavy for me. Because that's true,

and his knowledge was like spot on. I was like, yeah, man, where were you a week ago when I, you know, asked for cream from the makeup department. Oh my god, he's getting ready to skydive. Oh my god, twenty dollars to jump out a plane. No, thank you? Like ask for more, Kirk. Ye, I'm not even gonna let you. Totally would have had to do a tandem yeah, oh yeah, yeah, solo beginner and assault. Yeah, come on, and he's gonna

land right in stars hollow. God. So we move quickly, like things move quickly, and suddenly they decide they're gonna divide and conquer at Friday night dinner and Rory you know, Okay, First, we do have the scene where war gets on the mic though to address the Queen issue, The ice Cream Queen is very funny. Just even when she's angry, she's you know, I don't want to sound I don't want to sound the way I'm about to sound. But even

when she's angry, she's cute. You know. Yeah, it's like it's so gentle and it's so funny because she never it never tips over into this sort of it never tips over into rage or you know, it's it's it's it's just it's really pleasant to watch. She's really easy to watch. She's easy to spend time with, you know, totally. It really really is. Because she won the town back a little bit on slow clap, but she did. She did. So let's talk about Friday night dinner because now we're

into the two most important parts of this episode. What did you think you can tell Emily's looking for lower Lie and when she answers the door right before she goes, they are here, and it's like, oh no, it's not a day. I knew we were in hot water right then and there. But here's here's what it was so great about this Friday night dinner because we haven't seen one in a week or two, right, it's been a week or two since we've had a Friday night dinner.

You mean it like on the show, right, we haven't the show it's been they haven't had one in months, in a couple of right and right, their characters haven't yea. So it all started out so great with the gifts and come on in and where you know, and then you know when Richard comes down and it's all he gets a gift and everybody's delightful and it's all great, the mood is fantastic. What could go wrong? Well, everything goes wrong. And I started accepting it. You know, if

we go through the entire spine of that. Laurea Lay comes in and she's so tired she laughs her about off. Yeah, let's let's focus on this whole part. Yeah, I mean, I just want to make it. I want to make an overall car. Let's do that because we'll get to Luke and laure Lyte and but but but the thing is is, you know what today I accepted it. I finally accepted it. I said, you know what, Emily and Laurel I that is their thing. It ain't going away.

It's always going to be this way. There's always going to be something and thank God for it because it's funny, and it's up to the writers to sort of, you know, thrill and amaze us with you know, new angles on how they're going to, uh, you know, tell this story because it's they keep telling the same story over and over again in different ways, which is really challenging, but

they do a great job with it. That's right. God, that's such a great point that there this is the same thing over and over because we know it's coming, but we don't know how it's gonna come. And this was really surprising and great. Yeah. Why yeah, at the end,

it's such an amazing pain. Why do you think Emily was so bent that there was no Laura Lie because in one aspect, she could have been just stoked to have the time basically one on one, two on one with Rory the night before she was leaving for college. What why What do you make of the fact that Emily was really I'm not happy about it because it's still her daughter. It's still feels like a diss I feel like she just wanted it to be back to regular Friday night dinners because this is the first one

since the new agreement. I think we can say, um, so there she was like, Oh, everything's back to normal, you know, Laura Line. I think it was just but I just I thought it was really funny that Rory gets like Rory's held hostage because of it, Like do you think, well, do you think Emily is doing that in hopes that Lord like comes, Like I thought that was it. I thought it was that she was there

for so long that Lauraa has to show up. I think Emily knew exactly what she was doing, Like everything was very calculated, Like even Richard called it out, Well, why didn't you put in the soup fla when we sat down for dinner? Those things takes hours, you know, Like she knew exactly what she was doing. And I do think that there's a lot of Emily that regrets her relationship with Lorela in the beginning years of Loyalis Life, Like there's a lot that she regrets and is not

happy about. And I feel like she's been trying to fix it, even though she's she's very stubborn, but like she's trying to reverse the damage that was done before. Does that make sense? And she gets to do it sorry, but she gets to do over with her granddaughter. Yeah, but she misplaced love, that delayed love. She gets to love her granddaughter. But I think she also the reason why she cares so much about Lorla is she is

not happy with how that relationship turned out. So she's still she's still somewhat hopeful that maybe it will kind of you know, right, right, I think you're right. I think you're right. I think there's a kernel of hope that Laura comes around, and and that those two keep disappointing each other for one reason or another, and and everything gets lost in translation. But one point I want to make I I don't I kind of disagree with

you Tara and you Danielle. I don't know that Emily is so cynical and excuse my naive tech, that she just wasn't purely delighted that she could spend some real time with her granddaughter alone without an ulterior motive of drawing Laura, because that would make her and that would make her a person who uses her granddaughter to get back at her her daughter. And I don't want to. I don't want the mother the granddaughter grandmother relationship to

be tainted in that way. Right. I agree with you up until when Laura came over and she was like, Mom, this is my last night with my daughter before she goes to college and she goes. I know, so why aren't you here like that? I like with your sense. I thought, oh, maybe she just wanted the LA and dinner. But when we got to the ballroom dancing, I was like, no,

this is not They've never done that, They've never video. Danielle, let me ask you this why And this might be a silly question, and if it is, to just tell me this is a silly question. But why would Emily expect not to be included in her final night in town? Why would Emily give that up when she has put in so much to developing and helping Rory along this path. No, I don't think she do, you know what I mean?

It's like, why do why do? Why do we as an audience expect Emily to take a back seat at this I did as an audience, though, You're right, I did. She deserves the Friday night, I mean, just does, Like, Mom, don't you understand you know, we're we're a separate nation, We're not friendly. I wanted to spend time with my doubt. Why couldn't Laurel, I share Rory with Emily on the final night. Tell me why if Jess was still in the picture, would Laurel not have expected that Rory would

spend her last night with him? Interesting? Interesting point. But I but that's a hypothetical, and that's really hard to answer. Right now. You're just, you know, you're just you're trying to confuse this. I get I get where you're going. I think, why, why does Emily have to get less? I don't. I don't think she has to get less. She she deserved her Friday night dinner. But a typical Friday night dinner is you have your dinner and then Rory goes back home, you know, like it's not the

ballroom dancing ten hours of videotapes. But I think Emily, like said, there's a switch. She's like, Okay, I want to drag this out as long as possible. Roy goes goes to school tomorrow. But maybe if I keep extending, extending it, Lorila is going to have no choice but to come. Grandparents do get less. That is the role of the grandparents. Like you guys, let's let's I have grandparents. I did, and like my grandparents would have gotten Wednesday

before I went to college. Do you know what I'm saying, They would have definitely gotten it. But also, let's not forget she's coming back next Friday, Like, it's not like you're back, she's not going abroad. The drama of her leaving and all that. Okay, brief pause before we dig into this more did Gilmore Girls? You guys, this is like major, major important point. I almost want to like, we'll be back after the break because this is so major. Well, why don't you just say that we'll be back after

this break. We'll be back with the most major Gilmore Girls thing that I have never noticed in all the years until this moment. Oh, I can't wait. This is exciting to be good. I'm about to burst. I believe wholeheartedly now that Gilmore Girls invented Dancing with the Stars. Oh my god, I wrote that down too literally shoote Okay, because Mark Ballace's parents are in that is Mark Ballace's dad. That even gets named Quirky Ballast who also did dance

on Dancing with the Stars. Okay, there's a lot to the Yeah, somebody look up when Dancing with the Stars came. I'm telling you, guys, some person was watching this going there might be something to this. So Emily Kelly Bishop in real life is a dancing so she did know all the things she's talking about. Five l. Quirky Ballace was fully talked about on this episode with video and Emily talking about ballroom dancing and the whole thing. Okay, then, so Quirky is Mark Ballace's dad who Mark is one

of the big dancers on Dance of the Star. Quirky danced on Dancing with the Stars. That is there. Everything she said was real. Mom, Shirley's his mom. It was all not those were real references. The one that I don't think was real though. I don't think Mark's actual name is Quirky Jr. Or whatever she's called him. I don't know google it. But maybe Mark has a brother. Maybe Mark has a brother. Then okay, we'll think about this, the three of them, Oh, Jackie our producer, Quirky Ballace's

real name is Mark Boom. Okay, So then think of the significance in two ways. One we'll talk about the significance in Gilmore World. How many times canna say quirky? How many times can I say significance? The three of them are loving watching this, so they're spending all this time they don't leave, which we'll talk we'll talk about all that literally, but somebody in the television worlds like these three important people love watching ballroom dancing lightbulb. Can

I get Mark and ask? This is so literally, it's so good because what was Mark on season one? Yeah, he's like an o G he I know he's an OG and he's and by the way, the timing of this, this is his first season back this year in like in like six or seven seasons, so the timing of us watching this when like Dancing with the Stars and he just started like I n oh, he started season five? Okay, he's technically an og like, oh, he's awake? Wait, hold on, can he's awake? Ok Wait, I'm gonna call you. I'm

gonna call him, just him click the zoom link. He doesn't even be on video that way, he's in a zoom Oh no. It was based on a BBC one show Strictly Come Dancing, and that premier in two thousand and four. When is he gonna be out? I'm asking it. Thank you Jackie for that information. Jackie Rodriguez. Everybody she yeah, Mark, he's our friends that like this was kind of fun and be like, oh my god, what is he coming on the zoom? He's in a zoom. I'm saying, you

get mentioned he's in a zoom already. This is so fun. We're literally doing this on the fly. Yeah, it's gonna tell us when he's ready, and then maybe he could be on Towards the table of this episode. He wants to know the question, and I'm gonna say, we want to jump. Maybe he could do a new podcast where he's never seen an episode of Dancing with the Stars and he could recap every single one of you. Imagine rewatching I cannot there's like thirty five seasons, so many seasons.

Danielle quickly, I'm like, Pisa, guys, I can't do that one, or Survivor rewatch Survivor. I'm seeing the amazing race. He's all, what's the question? And I'm like, if I ask you on the text, everyone's as exciting. Yeah, but okay, so hopefully it'll hit me back. Okay, so we'll get him on, We'll get him on pop culture, We'll get him on otherwise. Can I like the pop culture idea? That's fine? Yeah, let's talk about the fact now forget to answer with

the stars. They they stayed. No, no, no, no, no no, they didn't stay. Yeah, they did. I thought to say, were back at home watching, So Emily went to bed. Emily's in the scene she missed. We missed a scene. She's not there yet because Luke and Lorela have their convers But right, but I'm talking about we talked earlier in this podcast. I said, we're gonna go through all of this part because it's so major, Scott, you might

have looked away. The whole payoff is that Lora, Lye and Rory are loving watching damp fake dancing with the stuff. But I thought they talked, took the video home. What I thought Emily. The camera pans out and Emily's next to them asleep. No, I mean you could have, like anyone could have missed that, because I almost did. I thought they were home, and the whole bit was they

love the show so much, they're watching home. Will still worked right, And that was I think what we were sort of expected to think because it's on just the two of them. Then it pans out and you see you see Emily asleep. They stayed, So this is why you have to watch these episodes twice. Yeah, it was like times or four times. You know, there's always a little stuff. If you would have looked down at your paper to write your notes, yes, that's what I do. Is like the very it was like the last like

three seconds of the of the show. I had all these Mark Ballas quirky corking my head. I got distracted and it's so major, Like it's so major, and I think they were eating biscotti. Yeah, they were at the end, And this begged me to question, and I wanted to bring you guys who snacks on the Scottie's just like breakfast with your coffee type thing. Yeah, but we're talking, we're talking about the Gilmore girls. Well, and they just got back from Europe with they're all thrown off. You know.

It was very, very very major that they stayed. Yes, and Emily literally Emily was able to go to sleep so soundly because everything she wanted everyone was there in her house with her. And she even acknowledges like Richard goes to bed like almost like I'm alone, Richard goes to bed, I'm just here and they stay. She wanted to look at the lengths she has to go to if she's that cynical to intentionally use um Rory is a honey trap for her daughter. Right right now, her

girls are there. She can rest easy because she's got her girls there. She probably missed them, I think. I think underneath it all, she loves them both dearly, and she misses them, and she wants peace and she wants and they've been gone in Europe for months. She's probably missed them so much. And imagine, as a grandma, you have your daughter and your granddaughter there watching ballroom like that, you that's why she fell asleep, something that she loves. Right,

she was easy. I thought that was actually quite beautiful, like and I missed it first of all. That is the funny thing. It's really easy to miss because I, like you, Scott, thought they were at home also, and I thought, oh, but I'm like, that's what their couch. I was like, that's like a weird couch. And then I kept watching watching and I'm like, and I had forgotten this because I think people miss it when they're

watching this episode. Yeah, it does make sense because I thought the TV and it looked a little nicer than the whole time I was literally like, oh my god. Wow. Okay, so now we're going to reverse a tiny bit. The mattress is getting loaded in the truck. I'm gonna give you a B minus on that sound effect, but pretty good. So because we're because we did go out of order. So we're going back now to such a pivotal moment, big moment. I don't even know where to start. Let's

start with you, Scott. Tell me everything you felt about that scene. I love the way he dragged it out. But there's more. But there's more. That's like a salesman and there's more. Wait, there's more. Uh yeah, And I just think, you know, I think that scene made it so obvious that these two really belong together, or at least they should give it a shot. You know, it's like give it a shot. Yes, I mean it was

you know everybody. She was so relieved and he was relieved that she was relieved, and they were both kind of sitting there happy, even though he was trying to kind of fake that it didn't Oh it didn't work out and what a pickle. But he didn't care, you know, he was with her. The faces, the acting of the bodies and the faces and this and how about when he says, so, first, did you propose? And he says yes, and her face and I'm just like, and I felt

that Luke looked so sad. Not obviously Luke knows he's already getting divorced. He looks so sad because he has made her so sad. Then there's more we got married, and then you see lord, I say, how could you could you? M lengthy pause, there's get married because she says how could you? Like, how could you do? At first she's saying how could you do this to me? And then she realizes like she can't say that, so she says, how could you get married? And I'm like,

oh my god. That was the best dialogue between those two so far. Yes, it was the most fraught with tension and consequences and so revealing of how they both felt about one another. There, yes, in a very unexpected way, and the relief we're getting divorced, like literally in a one minute period, full panicked, tried to check herself, she's devastated and gets complete relief. Yeah, she made it look easy. Laura Graham's not too bad? Is she? I was totally wrong?

She's not too bad. She isn't enius the acting in that scene. Look, you're not too bad either that scene. So that is probably one of the best scenes. And wait, so Danielle, when when Luke first says when when Laura Lee says, did you propose? And he says, yes, what did your what did you happen? Okay? Why I was a little shocked too, because I didn't know what was going to happen. I'm shocked something. Wasn't it an Alaskan cruise in the end of the season and now it's

the Caribbean because they went snorkeling seven countries? He says seven country cruise. But I want to say in the end of last season he's Alaska did But how you got a seven country cruise? It since like a lot And you know what they do. They come from Connecticut and they dock right outside my window here. But if you're the first stop, and then they Canada and Alaska. Alaska's clear on the it's on the west coast of the United States. Oh right, you're going around that way,

so that's a huge crew. But then yeah, they say they snorkel in the in Alaska to call me, and I guess you can in Alaska exactly, there's some flag on the play there. Daniel then is seven countries, so seven because what did your they do? When he then says we got married, like what were you experiencing in

real time through this scene? It all happened so fast, so like you don't really have a chance to process, Like he was, like, I proposed, then we got married, then we got divorced, and I was just like, like literally like watching the screen, like what is happening? And how did this happen so fast? I'm so confused. But I was happy that they got divorced. But everyone happy. I'm happy about that, right, I am, yes, sure, I mean it was a great relief. But how interesting would

it have been? Okay, just think of the possibilities if you said, and we're married, and that was that. I mean right, I know that would have been I'm sure they thought about it. More episodes for Trish, more for her Lauren to play off of, and right, I mean right, I'm sure the writers must have thought about it because obviously, look, everyone knows the trajectories. He's so I wanted what made them take the decision because they want that relationship to

be pure. They wanted to be as pure as possible and that nothing, nothing can last in the face of that heat. That's a point really good. So I thought both of those scenes made this episode a ten out of ten ice Cream Queens because the scene with Emily just all that, everything from the Friday night dinner to the payoff with Emily at the end, and this scene with Luke and Lordly ten out of ten ice Cream Queens.

I mean, I thought they were both so amazing. Well, even though yes, Tara, you make a salient point with she's coming back in a week anyway, but still it's it's the prodigal daughter leaving and she will return, but she's going away. Life is going to be different for for lor from pure on out. You know, she doesn't

have a job yet. She's gonna build up the new end and the whole thing, and I hope that, hopefully that works out for but she's gonna be left without her best, bestest friend in the world that she will ever have her own. Flush and Blood is going to college and it's a big deal. And I got so

moved at the end by the thought of it. Because Amy wrote a sort of a Dan type episode where it was light and funny light and funny light and funny light, and that heavy, heavy moment at the end, you know, like big heavy moment to the point where it was like, you know, it was eleven o'clock here in the am and it's seven am, uh California time, and I knew, I knew my little guy was still

kind of snoozing a little bit. So I called my FaceTime, my wife, and she answered he was all snuggly with her, and you know, yeah, because I'm missing those moments because I'm here, you know what I mean. So I just wanted to see I said, just let's let me see him sleeping. Let me see him sleeping. He woke he woke up, he woke up, and we talked to them. I said, hey, buddy, have a good day at school. And I just projected myself into the future when we're

gonna say goodbody going to call. Yeah, the show, this TV show brings up emotions in you. And then it transferred to, Oh, I gotta call my my my baby. That's it. Yeah, I gotta miss my baby, gotta call him, I gotta see him, I gotta talk to him. I

gotta tell him I love him. That's really that does I like that you brought that up, because that's sort of the magical thing about this show, Like it does make you go, oh, my own parents, or my own grandparents, or my boyfriend whatever it does, those emotions do sort of carry through, and for the most part, I think they're very lovely. What the emotions that brings up. It's never painful things like when you watch some shows. This

show really is like Seinfeld does the same thing. It gets you to recognize all the crazy stuff that happens in your life that just just like that that you're sitting on the screen, all that funny crazy stuff, right, so relatable. I mean, do people watch uh an episode of Chicago Fire or something and then like start calling their friends all moved and saying, hey, but respect that you brought up Chicago Fire more of a Chicago medgal. But did you did you put out your cigarette? You know?

How you doing? You know? I mean, you know, I'm not trying to trash anybody's shows, but I'm just saying this show is so relatable. Yeah, I think you make a perfect point, because I think there's other shows where you're watching like like hardcore dramas and you're like, oh, This reminds me of my terrible ex boyfriend that night, right, This one is not they traumatize you to the point where you just need to like you need to lie down. This one really does bring up loveliness like love each other,

love your parents, love you. This is the healing, the healing aspect of this show, the healing influence that every fan tells me about at these conventions, And when I meet them on the street, they just sell your show, you know, because they all do the same thing I did. They picked up a phone and they faced time their kid. It reconnects people, It keeps people connected on a deeper level.

Wonderful influence on the culture. Hey, you want to do? Uh, my crack team came up with something, alright, and we gotta get to home. Here we go six oh three plus six minutes and three si yes, exactly all right.

At eleven minutes and thirty eight seconds in the scene where Jackson is saying he doesn't want to know the sex of the baby, at the point where he says Ricky Ricardo didn't know, you can see Rory's left side and the shot and she's already wearing the button that Jackson hasn't given her get At twelve minutes and eight seconds, watch the right side of the screen as Suki throws open the doors of the baby ship. You can see a cast member's hand reach into the frame and grab

the door to hold it open. Think dank thing alright. At around h sixteen to seventeen minutes in, when Laurel I is telling her fake jam story, the dirty plate next to her disappears and reappears a few times. H come on Rory's button. At eighteen minutes and seventeen seconds, it says I do not want to know the sex of my baby, But at twenty minutes and fifty three seconds it has magically changed to I don't want to

know the sex of my baby. So it went from do not too, don't um and go ahead, gang yeah script Ready for favorite one. The grand opening of Taylor Soda Shop was supposed to I would have much more smooth segue than that. Come on. The grand opening of Taylor Soda Shop was supposed to have been in the episode where Fran died Remember the Marching Band the funeral. That episode was set several months before this one. That's a long time to delay the grand Uh huh. Yeah,

that's a great, great catch. Do you think they were just waiting for Rory to come back from their trip so she can be the ebything queen. Yeah, it's a good point. Okay. So minutes forty eight seconds, Rory brings Emily a present in a gift bag, but she doesn't even let Emily open it. She takes the gift out herself and just hands it to Emily. Yeah. I remember that, but but that's for speed sake, because you don't want to take that time when you're shooting, because that's precious

screen time. It's just like, just get to the gift, right, I mean, technically she opened the box. She did, she did. I didn't notice. When Luke is helping Laureli load the truck, he mentions that he has luggage because he just went on a seven country clues what we're talking about, guys, here we go. But in a previous episode he told Laureli they were driving through Western Canada and then taking a cruise to Alaska. Right, so then the snorkeling doesn't

match well, I mean it does match up. If they're going to seven countries, they could have stopped in like you know, Caribbean. But I don't think you snorkel in Alaska. Um, what can I say? You know, it's uh, it's it's a little confused anyway, all right, let's do favorite line. Um, there's a million. I have one. Give it Tara, it's um what so Taylor says, I don't understand why you're as a diner and minds a stupid store, And Luke says,

look at this place, look at you. All you need is six dancing penguins and Mary Poppins floating in the corner to bring back two of the worst hours of my childhood. That's a good one. So mine is simple, and I know there's millions of good lines. I still think there's more because it was two words that were so important. Yeah, there's more, like so I'm going with that. Um Daniel favorite, Yeah, I did. Mine was a little unexpected.

But it's when Rory gives Richard her gift and Emily goes Richard says, I love this and Emily goes, yes, and you're gonna love it. Outside on the patio, my favorite lines, two little boys walked by. Rory said, thanks a lot, Yale, can have you? I totally agree. Yeah, that was good. That was good. There was a lot of good stuff in here. There's also one more I have to say. That was a chard. We had somebody joining this home soon. Yes, what was that? What was that?

There's a surprise coming in Scott. You just let Tauras say her thing and then we've got a little surprised. I was just gonna say one last little tid but that I loved is when Emily says to Richard, Lorela has chores to do, and Richard says chores and she's like, errand's you know, like chores because it's just like cleaning my house. I still don't understand why they didn't just say she was calling out the obvious bs Lorela, excuse right, we're gonna bring Emily. Oh, because he has two minutes,

so we're gonna bring him. We have a guest. Oh my god, what's happening here? Huh? All right, I'm I'm waiting. I'm non tenderhooks here. What's going on? Everybody's waiting? Mark Dallas, Mark, welcome to the podcast, my friends. On what is going on? I think you know, we have many questions. Amy, you have questions, so you have a series I don't know anyone's ever told you this. So we're Gilmore Girls thing, right, Yes,

so Mark, I believe two things. Okay, Gilmore Girls invented maybe in America, but Gilmore Girls invented Dancing with the Stars. This was what years and yeah, we're all here, the whole famis here. So this this episod It was two thousand three and Dancing with the Stars premiered in two thousand five. That's right, yeah, so right after Yeah, I mean, look, I don't that could that's a very good theory. I

don't know. I don't know if it's totally accurate. It came from the show came from England originally, you know, strictly started it, but conceptually maybe it was a notion of more girls. You know. But Mark, what about the fact that your dad is fully not only your mom and dad, but especially your dad gets a full shout out in Gilmore Girls with video to remind, aren't they they're watching a competition, right, yeah? Yes, yeah, they're like, oh,

that's Quirky and Shirley. Yeah, and then they say Quirky Ballace Jr. Was that your nickname or no? Yeah? For Emily who's played by Kelly Bishop, who's also a dancer in real life, says and he has a son, Quirky Jr. And I was literally so Scott, so you have the background. Mark and I have been friends for like almost almost

twenty years, like a long time. So obviously when I watched this back in the day, I didn't know the Ballast family him watching this last night and I was like, what is was like, I know Quirky Ballast Jr. I was like, it's just like work. Like every every you know, six months or so, I'll get a text from like a random friendly like did you know you're on Gilmore? Girl is six months are up? And here we are everybody,

because we talked in real time just moments ago. I was like, you guys, I have to text Mark right now, like you don't awake and it's I was like barely. I was like, what's happening. You're more girls. I was like, oh okay, And it's even crazier because now you're coming back to Dancing with the Stars. Yeah, so it's like yeah, you know, yeah, it's very funny. This all came up very last minute. Um, you know, Conrad Green is back, who's the original producer no, it's just one of the

best I think. And he called me randomly one day while I was sweeping my steps and literally outside sweeping. Went from like, you know, doing some how stuff BC and I are working on a new record right now, like I had the next six months plan. He was like, hello, mate, Conrad. He's like, I'm coming back. Have you got one more in you? I was like, I need more details, but you have such an awesome partner. Like I'm totally waving for you, guys, who's your partner? Who's your partner? I'm

with Charlie Damilio this time? God, but Scott. So what's so funny about Mark? And I'll include Derek in this too because they're my boys, Okay, and I mean this in the best way possible. Suddenly Mark and Derek became who I cared about more than their famous celebrity partner. I'm like totally, So that was such an amazing thing. But the other thing that's so crazy is in two thousand three when this episode airs, Yes, your your mom and dad were famous in the dancing world, but they

weren't necessarily famous like they became or you. It's like, no, yeah, I mean I feel like at the time, you know, in the eighties and nineties, and you know, maybe before that would be like the forties fifties, like ballroom dancing was such a it was a thing, you know, and then it kind of like like it became like if you know, you know, type of situation. It wasn't very

you know, out there all the time. Um, so yeah, like kind of vanished, and then the show kind of brought that interest back, you know, And I think it's just, um, it's great to see, especially with where we are now with social media and dancing and music and everything is so fast and like to see kind of dance and all that side of the arts kind of get a second or a third or fourth life, if you will.

People are interesting in again, and you know, it's great activity to learn how to move with your partner and have a little night of something new and different. So I think people find that it's fascinating to see two people come together and you know, dance of who never have so you know, it's fun. It's an oh my gosh,

dancing stars amazing. But the fact that Gilmore girls knew in two thousand three, not only did they, I mean they could have just acknowledged, Oh, let's watch the room dancing, but that they call out your dad, who I mentioned

earlier did do Dancing with the Stars. Yeah, the fact that these writers knew like this is the guy that we're gonna mention, Well, you know, I wish I wish we had had this call you six, my mom was in town because you know, she's like back in the day, like you know, eighties and nineties they were you know, they were it. They were the world champion training Like like my mom is still considered, you know that one of the top coaches for this sport in the world.

Like she's elite of the elite. And now she judges. She's lend now in England. She British version, which is the original, you know, so it started in England, Like I don't know when do we start to two thousand five, so maybe a few years before that. And now so she's head judge in the UK and they called her the Queen of Latin. That's amazing, hilarious. Well, thank you for jumping on. So so thanks for having me. Wait, Mark, tell us what's going on with at Alexander Geene before

you jump out. So we you know, we've been um, I think at the end of was it last year, we we kind of decided to take like a bit of a social media break and kind of be human, and we built this new space we can record at home. We spent the last couple of years learning all the engineering side of things, so now we just can do everything ourselves, which is great. So we we had the next few months all lined up. We've got a single dropping September twenty three, just called the Way You Move.

It's fast, it's fun, it's a sexy song, kind of you know, got good vibes. So we're gonna try and drop one every six weeks. I was like, okay, you know, we're gonna organize our this is the only we're reorganizing our house all up, Like sure, why not? So yeah, we're gonna be dropping new music every four to six weeks and you know, hopefully leading up to an album and get out and play some more shows at some point. We love nice and when this this this tonight is

the night so Dancing with the Stars premieres. Am I getting that right? Yeah? No Monday, Monday? Right? But when this air is this air is on Monday? Oh there you go, So tonight night is the Night. Tonight is the Night and it's on Disney Plus, so get your Disney Plus get this. Good luck, thank you, It's going to be cool. It's like we're making history. I guess moving to streaming. So that's knows about that. Gilmore Girls did did the same thing. Yeah, it'll go violent, it'll

go even more viral. Well, good luck and and listen. Thanks for your time, thanks for coming on. Great meeting you and you two, Scott, Thank you for having me. Appreciate you. Yeah, we'll be streaming Monday night for sure. I have it. I think I think I'll have a day off. It would be nice. Good luck with them, good luck, thanks for coming on. Really appreciate talking to all season long. Bye bye. Oh we gotta end on that. What a do? That was cool? Huh? All right? Everybody?

What that was? We should do that more often that people listen to the end because isn't that fun? Isn't that fun? Well? Next week full circle moment because the Looralize go to Yale? Is that the exact title? What's the exact title? The luralize first day at Yale? Yeah? Anyway, thank you to Mark Ballace for coming on. Do a little cameo for us. That was fun.
