I am all in, Kiss You, I Am all in with Scott Patterson and I Heart Radio podcast Everybody. Scott Patterson Pop Culture, Season four, Episode seven, The Festival of Living Arts. I am joined by Amy Sugarman, Tar Sud and Danielle Romo. Here we go, Ladies and Gentlemen. Laurela comes over to visit Suki and meet Jackson's brother Bo. Suki leave Oscar Wilde here to his reading. Oscar Wilde
was an Irish poet and playwright. Oscar Wilde had his reputation unmade at a stroke, once the darling of Victorian society. Within weeks, he was tried and sent to jail for two years of hard labor. He spent much of his time in solitary confinement, deprived a few in contact. He could do nothing but brood. Suki is referring to Bow feeling like he's being kept an imprisonment and is brooding while they wait for the baby's delivery. And that was played by the one and only Nick Offerman. Umla Yes
from Parks and Recreation and Other Things. Uh Laurea l tells Rory about Suki's home birth plan. Rory a plastic sheet. Laurea la, I saw it. It's the same one that boy who couldn't hold it in to use it after a school special? What was that called? Rory? It's not It's not Benny's fault. Yes it is. That's Oh I wondered that. Yeah. ABC School After Special. ABC After School Special was a series from seventy two to nine seven.
It ran usually in the late afternoon on weekends. Most episodes were dramatically presented situations, often controversial, interested children and teenagers. Several episodes were either an animated form or presented as documentaries Gonna need to watch that um Topics include illiteracy, substance abuse, and teenage pregnancy. This series won fifty one Daytime Emmy Awards during its twenty five year run. Oh my god, does it? I take a I know, I
know this is I know you're excited. I know how you get because I want to ask Danielle and Tara if they know about after school specials. But people get very mad that I am. Seem like I'm judging them for not knowing everything, But really it's curiosity. Do you guys know what they are? I did. Yeah, I've heard of it, but I've never watched it. Oh my god, there was such a big deal. I liked how ABC used to do like um was it was t G
I f that. Yeah, that was exactly that was. And then Wonderful World of Disney was Friday Night, The Spinning at Night, Nick at Night. Yeah. Well yeah it still happens, isn't it. So yeah, yeah it's on, but it's well, I know it's not ABC, but it's like after school yeah thing, Yeah that was Nick and Knight had like full House. Yeah, but after school specials were like I think you're right, it's got there on like four o'clock or something like that, and you'd watch these. They were
like lifetime movies for teenagers. That's the best way I could describe them. So that great now, but they were yeah, like when during my time, Disney was known for their like their teen movies like High School Musical or Step It Up, you know, like things like that dramatic. These were a bit darker. I wonder any we find them? Yeah you too to star Trek, Yeah you had? Are
you too? You're too young for Batman? I'm not. I grew up with that man, so so yeah, so you same bat Time, same bat original Batman with the yeah, yeah, and I met him on the Warner Brothers Lad I stocked the stock. Oh yeah, Oh that's a good one. Same bat time freaking back. Yeah right there, he was a cool dude man in that ridiculous looking suit. Um Laurel I was referring to the episode of Not My
Fault or a sixteen year old boy. Warlock ends up in juvenile Hall after trying to prove himself to his peers. Lane found a new guitarist for their band Lane. I've already figured out that our spin cover should be against a blood red backdrop of the skull hovering over us. Lane the original rock and roll thinker, if there ever was one, um Laurel I Well very Norman Rockwell. Norman Rockwell is surely the most famous American press illustrator in
the world. He's called the storyteller of America. Rockwell is most famous for the cover illustrations of everyday life he created for the Saturday Evening Post over nearly five decades. Loyally sarcastically says the cover is not going to be a Norman Rockwell like because Norman Rockwell often portrays families in his portrait. Well a band can be a family, right. Yeah. Anyway, Taylor and otis studying Rory's face to see if she
would be a good fit for their new painting. Lorela, you better do what John Ashcroft says, or they may just follow us home. Uh. John Ashcroft was the U s Attorney General under President George W. Bush from oh one oh five. He was a supporter of the US Patriot Act, which increased surveillance during the War on Terror and and was enacted after nine eleven one. Lorea I is referring to the US Patriot Act when saying he will follow you home with increased surveillance. Uh. Did you
ever hear John Ashcroft singing? And like he released it releases? Not really, but he released a single or something that's about eagles. That's very fun. Are you making this up? No? I'm not making it up. You can google it John Ashcroft singing. I'm doing it right now. You'll you'll you'll bust your girdle listening to it. You got it? Where eagles soar? Okay? Let me try that something with eagle, John Ashcroft? Where eagles soar? Okay? Okay? Do you do
you have it? I don't, but there is extraordinarily high amount of songs named where Eagles, but not by John Ashcroft. Nothing by John Ashcroft, hold on keep going, I'm okay, so the third thing that okay? John Ashcroft singing Let the Eagles sword. There's a song written by former Missouri senator and U S attorney John play it? Can you play it? Let us getting into hot water? Go? Oh God? Anyway, I'll keep going. And you you just you just let us know, you, let us know. The band discussing how
old Gil is Lane. We could dress him up like Angus Young and a c d C. That schoolboy outfit. Brian uh, he could have seen a c d C in the original with their original lead singer Zack and when that guy choked on his own vomit. Angus Young um is leauitarist of a c d C and he wears a schoolboy outfit for all his concert. According to Loudwire, it was his sister who suggested the schoolboy outfit. They thought a good act always had some something people could
relate to. My sister said, why don't you get your school uniform with the shorts, Young said in an interview after that the rest was history. Lane as as if his guitar playing wasn't enough. The guy is a fantaistic guitar player. Um Lane is suggesting the schoolboy outfit to make him look younger. There is coast. What happened just getting never never saw it before. It's a beautiful voice. You cannot my heart like a thumping thing. She makes
my heart beat like a thumping thing. Um between being funny, being me, how would you know? You do it so much, so much better than uh Land is suggesting the schoolboy outfit to make him look younger, while Brian and Zach are saying he's old enough to have been alive to see Ronald Belford's bond. Scott, who was the lead vocalist in seventy four until his death, died of alcohol poisoning. Wait did he actually choke on his own vomit though? Or was that just a joke that they put into
Gilmore girls. No? I think I think that's probably accurate. Yeah, yeah, I think that Gil. Well, you know this guy's partied man Gil saying the band is going to be good. Gil, don't you think these guys are gonna be as good as Pink Floyd? Zack nice topical reference Pink Floyd was formed in is one of the first British psychedelic rock groups. Zach is saying his reference is old because Gil is older.
Stanley Kubrick asked to license the title track from Adam Heart Mother for the soundtrack to A Clockwork Orange My personal favorite film of all time, but Pink Floyd declined when the director indicated that he wanted to dismantle the song for use throughout the film. Huh wow, uh okay, nice choice there. Pink Floyd could have been in the greatest film of all time. Uh Suki is freaking out
because she is late. Laurelai gives her a box from four when she was about to give birth Laurela The magazine I was reading that night is a special feature who on Who's Hotter? Andrew McCarthy Emilio Estevez. Andrew McCarthy and Milio Estevez were part of the bratt Pack, group of young actors from the eighties that included Rob Loow,
Molly Ringwald, Demi Moore, and Anthony Michael Hall. Andrew McCarthy in the eighties was most known for his roles in Pretty and Pink, Saint Almo's Fire Weekend at Bernie's and mannequin mannequin. He's currently starring in The Resident and directing episodes of the Blacklist and director. Yeah, I was like, who is he is? He plays um So, a new female co star and a couple episodes behind and he plays her father. Oh, the one who has a drug issue. How far are you? It's pretty recent? She's like, um
they she just joined. He met her in the helicopter. She like was sort of a tough cookie doctor. I would say, yeah, wait, how far she's got behind her? You? I haven't watched this season yet. Okay, okay, should I do? Oh? Thank you? Should I do the moment everyone's been waiting for? Um The Resident. Andrew McCarthy is also in The Resident, starting and directing episodes of The Blacklist. What your drum
roll for? What this last thing? No? The tease I did in the last episode of Why Andrew McCarthy did not totally look like himself. At the end of Pretty and Pink, Oh yeah, yeah do it? So Andrew McCarthy is like a huge babe and Pretty and Pink like babe James Spader secondary babe, but Andrew McCarthy solid babe.
But the last scene I'm like, no, not as not as Babe Delicious, And it's because he was starting to work on another movie already and they had to do a reshoot for the end of Pretty and Pink and he had I think he had maybe a really short haircuts, so they had to put like a wig on real obvious, like he does not look nearly as like dream Body. But otherwise I think I would go Andrew McCarthy over Emilio.
Emilio in the Breakfast Club You love Amelio Estavis. I've lost a couple of Matt wrestling matches with wigs before Get Ugly, Get that. Yeah, I've lost a few of the like big, big, like thanks, big, thanks. So you want to tell your story, Yeah, my worst loss with a with a wig. All right, So so we're doing over the episodes right for the year in the Life. Oh yes, okay, okay, so it's a big moment. We're doing the cover of Enterty him at Weekly as the
Brady Bunch. Uh. You know how the Brady Bunch boxes right with the boxes, right, So anyway, I get there and they want to put a wig on me for the single shots and for the box shots and then the group shot and they put this thing on me, and it literally looked like, uh, you know, like a porkypine landed on my head from outer space like Andrew McCarthy at the end of Pretty, I mean it was it was just like it was like beyond bed. But they but my publicist was like, yeah, no, no, it
looks good. You look good. Everybody's like, oh no, it looks really good. It does h out. It does not look good. No, no, it's like solid black. It's like it's like Superman black. Right, it's not the word. I'm not mad at it. It's not good. It's just not even luke. It's not luke though. Yeah I would say that. Wait, but what happened. Oh so it didn't fall off. You're
just saying it was a ridiculous wig. Yeah yeah, I mean I do a side by side of that with Andrew McCarthy's lid from the end of Pretty and Pain. Let's do a comparison. See, let's get first of all, shout out to Scott for just calling it out and not being afraid, like, I mean, it's like, look at that, look at that, like, look at look at this side. It's all perfect a look at my lows, which is natural and it doesn't. It's like kind of looks like the same on me, but it doesn't work on me
because it's flaring out. Look how it's flaring out over here? I mean, yeah, let's do a side by side on that with Andrew McCarthy from the end of Pretty in Pink. Oh my god, I will say. Jared Podder, like his hair in this is just flowing. Look at that hair. I know, Wow, He's probably looking up at me going, what the f is going on with dude's hair? I am just so straight up on that one. I am
like mad zook ree, We're We're okay. Amelia Estevez in the eighties, was most known for the Outsiders at Breakfast club saying almost fire. He can most recently be seen acting and producing in the Mighty Ducks Game Changes. But I thought he left that Mighty did and Josh de Mel replaced him. Now alright at Festival of Living Pictures, they're getting ready backstage, Lorelai, you might want to check that Gumby Pokey watch Kirk Kirk right. Sorry, it's a collectible,
not a toy. Gumby and Pokey were Clay animation characters from the series Gumby Gumby was invented in nineteen fifty by Art Cloakey when he created a three minute film called Gumbassia while he attended Film School at usc and inspiration was from the inspiration was from the Disney film Fantasia. The show started on The Howdy Duty Show until it got its own spinoff, lasted until night then Eddie Murphy revived the character. He did this skit as Gumby once
Night Life, yelling I'm Gumby. Damn it was there a funnier man on the planet. Oh God, that was the funniest guy. Uh is well known as one of Eddie's iconic skits, and he returned in two thousand nineteen. Is Gumby during Weekend Update. There's a sentimental reason for gumbies lanted head shape. Cloaky based the angle on a photograph of his father when he was a teenager. Poofy cow Lick featured prominently in the photo. Fascinated Cloaky, which you're
affectionately referred to as a bump of wisdom. Okay, lorealized backstage getting ready for her turn. Rory, You're ready for your close up? Miss Desmond. MS. Desmond is a character from the nineteen fifties film War Sunset Boulevard. Desmond was once a giant of the silver screen silent era, but the Talking Pictures marked the end of her career as
a big time Hollywood star. Roaryors referring to Laurel, I like the silent movie star mis Desmond, Norma Desmond, who is if she is ready for her big Hollywood moments. Lorealizes freaking out about flinching. Uh, laurelized, Stevie Wonder could have seen it. I almost knocked Terrence down. I flinched. I'm a big fat flincher. Stevie Wonder is a blind musician. Uh. Stevie Wonder is an incredibly gifted musician who has challenged
with his eyesight. So Laureli is exaggerating about her flinching, and everyone could see it's Stevie Wonder currently holds a record as the youngest artist to hold a number one spot in the Billboard Charts. In ninety three, he was thirteen years old with his hit Fingertips Part two. His daughter went to my high school, so he would he would be at our like school functions all the time. Yeah, and she she played on the basketball team, and he would go to every one of her games and just
send the bleachers and and hang out. He was amazing and your grade. Yeah, uh, Laura Lai is still freaking about Laura la is still freaking out about flinching Loreli. I'm a Weebel and Weebl's wobble. I love that's a great line. Let's everybody say it, Danielle saying, I'm a Weebel and a Weebel's wobble. I'm a weebel and weevil's wobble. I'm a weevil and Weeble's wobble. I'm a Weebel and
Weebel's wobble. See that's if you say that, you'll feel better. Um. We Weebels is a range of children's roly Poly toys originated in the US and Hasbro's play School Division July. The catchphrase Weebel's wobble but they won't fall down was used in advertising during their rise and popularity in the seventies. Lorealis referring to her flinching during the show it is afraid to be a Weebel's wobble that wiggles and flinches. All right, Laurel, Still, yes, still free this a third
freak out over flinching um. Rory gives her advice, uh, to be like the Queen of England. Roy, close your eyes and think of England. Rory tells Laureli to be like the Queen of England who was poised and doesn't flinch. And where is the pop culture references to The Godfather? You know about a bang all over your ivy leagues
suit right at the beginning that Remember that? Remember that that was from the Godfather of the Academy Award winning Godfather where uh uh Al Pacino says, Sonny, I'll kill him, and he's talking about who's the turk with a knife? Who, Who's who's the guy that tried to assess it his father? I've never seen it. You've never seen the Godfather. You haven't seen the Godfather. I haven't. I'm sorry. I'm a shock right now. It is on my top five lists, haven't.
I don't even think it's my list. There's so many other things I want to I don't have it all my listing. The first top Gun. I went back. I watched this new Talk Gun and then went back. All right, So Michael Corleone, who's back from World War two? Who's who? Who? Marlon Brando? His father wants to have Michael have a political career because he's the one with the brains. Um now he gets into the family business because their father has.
There's been an assassination, an attempt on Marlon Brando's life, and he survived barely. So Michael says, uh, let's let's kill them, and they all laugh at him. James Conn laughs. Adam says, come on, what are you gonna do? What you nice college boy? What are you gonna do? You gotta get up close and blow the brains and what are you gonna do? A bubble but a being and get all over your IV lead suit. So anyway, when once you you see the movie, then maybe you can
react to that. He's just staring die jerk. Okay, here we go. Uh hi, everybody that's gonna be it for pop culture. We'll just edit all that Godfather stuff. Thinks, well, I know, let's keep it in.
