I am all in, kiss you, I am all in with Scott Patterson and I heart Radio podcast Everybody. Scott Patterson, We're back for pop Culture Minnisota with Tera S. Season three, Episode four, One's Got Class and the Other One Dies d y e S. Original air date October fifteen, two thousand and two. Tara take it away. Can I just
correct you on something? It's Tar Boddy. Scott Patterson. We're back with another pop culture Minnisota with Tara S. Season three, Episode four, One's Got Class, the Other One Dies, d y e S and I'm About to Die to Air date October two thousand and two. Tara take away. All right, now before she does. Guys, we we like Tara. We're giving her some notes. She's gonna get better in bed. Give me all the notes. I'll give you all the notes. But you're doing hard. When you guys have been doing
this for how long now? And I just start you have like a rhythm, you know you guys, it's almost our one year anniversary. That's so cute doing this for five years years because we're so exhaust No, no, it's just we do we do. We do a lot of episodes. I mean, this is like this is like a real job, you know, and it's fun. Heck, it's fun and fun, fun as all get up. But tera you have entered the gonna be like an ongoing joke. It's okay, Tara.
You have entered the rumpus room with us. Yes, late in the game, but we feel you can rump with the best of them. Is that going to get out of it out too? I don't know, No, not at all. We heard you were quite quite the rumper um. You're doing great. You had some very insightful comments on this last recap. I mean you pointing out some some great stuff.
It's so funny because I've seen this series maybe like five six times, um, but I've never really like deep dived into each episode, Like I feel like I'm learning new things as we go. Right, Yeah, me too. I mean it's the first time I'm seeing them, you know, and I'm like, what I was on this show? Wow? So yeah, So anyway, take it away, all right. So we'll start with um in a diner where um Loralai says, my whole face spins around a bunch of times and winds up at the back of my head like Daffy Duck.
Rory says, that's the silliest one yet. Loria, I says, Now, if that's how I go, you gotta promise to move my face back to the front of my head like Daffy did with his beak, So, of course. Daffy Duck is an animated cartoon from the Warner Brothers Loony Tunes and Mary Melody series of cartoons, and often running the gamut between being the best friend or art rival of
Bugs Bunny Um. Daffy was one of the first new screwball characters that emerged in the late nineteen thirties to replace traditional everyman characters who were more popular earlier in the decades, such as Mickey Mouse and Popeye. Do we I watched all this, all this as a kid, all of it? All this jump? Do we not ask Tara for a Daffy Duck impersonation? All right? Well this you better be good because Riley sher nail are offscar at
the ground. All right, let's do this one this, No, hold up, this all yes, Scott's a lot better than Yeah, not the best. You'll get there, you'll get there. But but the lisp. Actually, I watched all those cartoons. Those were big in my era, the like early eighties, late seven Yeah, we I don't know they were still around for these young women. Yeah, I watched you didn't really does super Friends mean anything to you? No, not to me. Not to you, of course what super Friends? Oh my god?
Only the best cartoon ever. It was Wonder Woman, Superman, Batman and Robin and the Wonder Twins, and there was like Aquaman and they just went on adventures and it was a cartoon. It was awesome, so awesome. There might have been like a lesson too. I think there was, like it was a teaching moment, same era. All right, all right, so let's move on to Lane walking into the diner. She says perfectly. It's totally time efficient, being a thirty second commute from my house. We practiced for
two hours. I'm home in time to watch reruns of Johnny Uns talk show on Korean television with my mom. Who thinks I hooked up with you guys, which I did, so I'm not even lying. So Johnny Un is a Korean American actor, singer, and comedian, and he hosted the first americanized Korean talk show from to and he was first discovered by Johnny Carson in nineteen seventy seven and appeared on his show in nineteen seventy nine. All right, let's move on to band practice, where Zach says, Lawrence
Welko cranked louder than this? So um he is a big band leader hosted in what Lawrence Well cranked louder than this? The line bubbles yea Lawrence Well like like it's such a dick, Like Lawrence Will cranked harder than this is basically saying we blow because Laurence Will. It's like the softest kind of elevate vetter music ever invented. He had a weekly she had a variety show, a weekly show, and sometimes I really thought my grandpa was Lawrence Welk, Like they kind of blurred together the way
they looked. He was on the air for twenty seven years. Sorry, sorry, I didn't mean to usurp you. No, I just that's cool. And there's like a massive amount of spit that comes out each time I do that. But I'm sitting next today. I was so sorry. Oh man, all right, let's move on to the next one. Lane says, wait, no, Brian,
I'm not exaggerating. Once a guy in our town named Kirk was practicing Bohemian Rhapsody with his band, the Kirk Glease and Five, and my mom shut them down so fast the band fled without their instruments and never came back for them. To this day, Kirk can't listen to Queen without tearing up. Such a good song, so good, So I want to see that. That's a scene I want to say with Kirk, Yeah, with the band. Yeah,
Bohemian Rhapsody. So Bohemian Rapsody was a song by the famous band Queen, written by Freddie Mercury for the band's album A Night at the Opera in five and Kirk Glease and five is a reference to the Jackson Five, which of course composed of the members of the Jackson family. In the early days of Queen's show, the microphone standard Freddie Mercury's broke, but instead of finding a news stand, he held the stub of the stand containing the microphone
and kept singing. This gave him a new idea, and soon he started to use the new prop in various shows while roaming around the stage. And so I actually never knew that. I didn't either, but I get it now. That's good, right, yeah, alright, so still in band practice, more music references. We've had a lot of but because of Dan Paladino, right, so Dave says, because we're supposed to be one for all band, like the Clash or
You Two. It's a democracy, so of course. Clash was an English punk rock band that forms in ninety six as part of the original wave of British punk. The guitarist and co founder of the Class, Joe Strummer, was a big stamp collector while he was in school. You Two, as an Irish rock band, formed in Dublin in and You Two considered calling themselves the Hype Feedback and even Larry Mullin Band, which is due to them forming after drummer Larry Mullin posted a notice at their school looking
for other musicians to start the band, kind of like Lane. Yeah, there you go. My god, what's the name of her band? I don't think we have it yet. I don't think they've given I mean it becomes Hepp Alien, but is there anything? No, I don't have a name. It's it's a Lane Kim band. Yeah, it's called Larry Mullin. It's despicable that you was saying. So I think Amy you
referenced this in our last episode. Um Dave says, there's no where you're going to become our Pete Best fired from the Beatles, yep or way being too good looking and rummer you have so Pete Bess as the original drummer of the Beatles, who was replaced by Ringo Star a few weeks before they recorded their debut single in
their Poor Pete Best. In the early days of the shows, they stayed at a cinema in Germany and when Paul and Pete walked into the room, they couldn't see so they lit an object but accidentally started a small fire. The owner of the cinema had them arrested, and Paul and Pete stayed in jail for the night. And Pete Best is still alive. M really, what did he go on to do? Did he stay in music? The Pete Best band? I think the Pete Best something like that,
the Pete Best four something like that. And did he fire and the drummer of his own band? I guess not. He's the drummer. And I think he's been married to the same lady since nineteen The twist of irony, he fired himself? Oh man, are let's move to the next scene. This is when Lane and Rory are on the phone and Lane says, you're making light now stop and focus and turned down the Corner Shop. It's distracting. Rory says that, no,
your Coltrane is distracting. Turn that down. Lane says, hey, I'm an angst here, and Coltrane speaks to my soul. I can't turn it down. The Corner Shop is a British band whose music is a fusion of Indian, British indie rock and electronic dance. Original Corner Shop drummer David D. Chambers use a lawnmower grass collector as part of his
initial drum kit with the group Wow. Coltrane is a jazz musician and saxophonist, and through his career he recorded forty studio albums, twenty three compilation albums, and nineteen singles. Well there you have it, There, we have it. There you have your pop culture episode, Ladies and Gentlemen. Very quick was a quick one minimum pop culture in this but I loved it. But the pop culture that it was in it was very poper poppy and very cult. I thought, um, so, no worries there, right, We have
a lot more guys. Why that was done? I'm like, did I miss something? One minute? I stepped away? I thought you just wanted it to end to be honest, Like, wow, am I doing that bad? Bring it up a little bit. Okay, okay, keep it going. Oh, for God's sake, there it is Larry kinds of people. Yeah, so let's go to this Larry King reference. Loreal I says, I'm a success. Who would have thought? Rory said? I suspected you had it in you. Loria I says, from rags to riches, I
wonder why Larry King hasn't called so obviously. Larry King was the host of Larry King Live, a nightly interview program on CNN, and Larry King was actually born Larry Zeiger. When he moved from Brooklyn to Miami in ninety seven, his first boss shot down his last name and said Zager was too ethnic. According to King's autobiography, his boss looked down at a paper and saw an ad that said King's Wholesale Liquors. What then his boss said, King,
how about Larry King? Yeah? I would have to say Larry King rolls off the tongue more than Larry Yeah. All right, let's move right into Louis Armstrong. Loral I says, well, you gave in just in time, because I was about to transition out of baby talk into my Louis Armstrong voice, and that my friend is a whole lot worse than baby talk. M Louis Armstrong was an innovator of American jazz, known for his gravelly singing voice. What's your favorite Louis
Armstrong song? Hello Dolly? Right? What? It's a wonderful world. I'm with you, Amy, It's a one. It's like, isn't it? What a wonderful? Didn't do it? Didn't he didn't he do a version of Hello Dolly? Like I said, Hello Dolly? I do nothing? So am I wrong? Am I thinking of somebody else? Can we can we make a bet? Five dollar bet? Five dollars? I can't. I can't afford that. I can't five dollar bet, says can someone google that real quick? Because I could use the five You can
venmo me. It's totally fine. So the water relief, Dolly, I'm picturing that um woman saying that is that Carol Channing? Yes, I'm mistaking Carol Channing for Louis Armstrong. He's not the original, but he did do a take on it. Thank you very much. Five bangaroon, he's come out. You can vemo. It's okay. Five smoleans. You know I take checks. Just I will send you five rolls of I want to see it on the next payment. Just send it in Amy losing bet five dollars. Thank you. I really thought
you were actually an idiot. Yeah, I know that right. Underestimate me again. See what happens, See what happens, See what happens. My Carol Channing is pretty bad. How about you do? You do your Carol Channing and I'll do Daffy Duck singing that song? Ready, go, I forget? Oh god, we're losing our marbles. Bee you stop me like halfway? Keep going right. You gotta stay on your toes here, No, I'm trying, all right, you gotta stay on your toes.
I mean, money's flying around. People are losing fortunes. It's some people are winning things. It's unbelievable, all right. So let's go to Lane, who says, what do you think? Pink? Or is that too pink? The singer? And Kelly Osborne and Gwen Stefani. I don't even think you need to say anything about that, definitely, don't. I think we know who they all are. Let's go to this next one where we mentioned in the last episode. Lorelie says Jimmy Buffett.
Luke says, put that back. Lorelie says, you like Jimmy Buffett, He's so mellow. I've just been to a few shows, that's all. A few shows. Oh my god, you're a buffet head? Is that the one you want me to wear? Or not? Seeing margueritea Ville? So Amy, what is it called again? It's not a part parrot heads? Parrot head? Amy? Were you a parent head? Oh no, I have never even been to a Jimmy Buffer concert, but I just
know all about it. I just know everything, and so I don't know if that was an intentional thing or if it was a m m m. Well. Margaritaville is a ninety seven song, of course by Jimmy Buffett um and he had a cameo and Margarite as a Margarite a guy in Jurassic World. That's cute. Don't want to go back, and I need to go back and watch it because I am. I don't know if I've mentioned this yet, but there's two movies. I am counting down for this summer Top Gun, Maverick and Jurassic Like the
Final Adventure. I don't know what it's called the next one whatever, No, I think it's the final Woe is it the conclusion? I don't know, but I cannot wait for both? Yea, all right, so let's go to the next one. This is when Rory is dying Lane's hair. She's trying to distract her and she says, I got a package. What's that? Oh? Jim Carey says that in ace Ventura, good distractions. Still thinking thinking about world events, lots going on there, thinking about the last movie I saw,
Vin Diesel, wasn't it? Think about Vin Diesel now, Think about where Vin Diesel, call the name Vin Diesel, Think about Vin Diesel's mysterious ethnicity, thinking about how surprising is to have so much to think about with Vin Diesel. Who knew? Did they called Triple X a flop in this or was that a different show I was listening to? No, they did not. This was just about Vin Diesel because I love Inn Diesel and Triple X was solid. No, they wouldn't have made their kind of commentary on the
show Yeah, they wouldn't help the dare that. Yeah they do. They sometimes rip on things. Yeah. But what's your favorite Vin Diesel movie? Mine? Yeah? God, I don't know that. I've seen one, and so have you seen any Fast and Furious? No? Have you seen The Pacifier? That's a good one. It is so good. It's very cutting edge because I think like Vin Diesel was just sort of showing up in the world at this time, wasn't he Wasn't he in a big, a big film franchise Curious No, No, No,
Saving Private Ryan or something started out something like that. Yes, I think I saw him in that, Yeah, because that was the beginning of his career. Yes, I think you are correct, something like that. The Pacifier was a classic. He was in Boiler Room, Riddick not good. Uh, Pitch Black not good? Keep going, I'll see what his first movie? Alright, the next one we have Loria Lie says, Oh, we're happy to be here, right, Luke says, yep, zippity doo
da so zippity do. It's a zippity day. Did you guys know that that song will no longer be playing in Splash Mountain at the both Disney parks out yeah, because it's actually from the movie UM Song of the South, and UM it's due to a lot of allegations of racism and stereotyping African America. Splash Mountain is gonna be like something different. It's gonna be Princess and the Frog. So Tiana like it. Yeah, they haven't changed it yet, but it's in the works to take that song out.
So that ride gets you wet anyone that tells you different. It's certain places you sit in the first two roads. The log makes you soaked, it does. I got soaked on the log. Yeah, alright, So then Rory says, uh in reference to Lane's hair, She says, like straw, I feel like I should be singing if I only had a brain, If I only had a brain, it was it was um so if I was uncredited in the movie Awakenings, he was a hospital orderly but it was saving private Ryan. I feel like there's always a Wizard
of Oz like reference in every single episode. It comes around a lot, doesn't it. Yeah. Yeah, anyways, yep, it's moving on to the next one. Lorelei Um says during her speed it wasn't funny. Luke says, not from your angle, but from mine. It was an Evening at the Improv. In the Evening at the Improv was a television program featuring stand up comedians, and it was the longest running stand up series and originated of stand up comedy. Originator of stand up comedy, Lorala says, oh no, what's this?
Luke says, looks like high Noon and stars hollow. This is when the moms are walking towards them and uh. The classic Western movie high Noon contains a scene of a posse of bad guys walking down main Street gunning for the sheriff, much like the mom's marching towards Laureli, Gary Cooper and Greece. Kelly had an affair that lasted um for the duration of the filming and also if anybody, um, if high Noon wants to sponsor us. You know, when
I heard that, I thought of the Salzer. I didn't know what I personally, I love a high Noon here there and our last pop culture note for this episode, Jess says, Hey, you're gonna go all word clever on me. I gotta go call Eddie and Lumpy to tell him late that was amazing. I loved every second of that reference. So good so fifties, sixties, right sixties, um fifties, I think so. Yeah. Word Clever was father of Wally and the Beave in the television series Leave It to Beaver.
Eddie Haskell and Clarence Lumpy Rutherford were Wally and the Beeves friends. You imagine having a son where his nicknames the Beaver, the Beave Lumpy. And that was our last pop culture reference for this episode, except for the middle when we thought you were done anymore. I kind of just went with it. I thought, you know, I'll me talking anymore, and weirdly after the second half was even more improved. It was worth getting better. Just give me all the tips. This is episode number two for you.
