I am all in. That's just you. I am all in with Scott Patterson and I Heart Radio Podcast. Everybody's Scott Patterson. I'm all in podcast. I Heart Radio one to leven Productions. Sorry I mean to shout that, but my heart Radio I want to leve In productions. Uh, and here we are pop culture, Tara, Tara, take it away. It's good to have you back. I know, good to see you. Welcome back. It's been so long. It feels very long. I know, right, it was because you were sick,
and then there was fourth of July we're talked about. Yes, we had two technically I had two weeks off. But we're scrambling here. We're scrambling. It's scrabbling, you know, like in summertime. I feel like everyone's like all over the place. So it's like the three of us. It was like the three No, I felt like we were apart for a while. Alright, Well, so season three, episode of fourteen swan song pop Culture. Um, this is the Laurel I'm
sorry at um Emily's house talking about grand Laura. I says, hey, you know what grand needs? Emily says what Lorea? I says, a fella and Rory says, with or without an umbrella. So with our without an umbrella is a reference to Eastern Parade UM, a film from nineteen eight starring Judy Garland, Fred Stair, Peter um Lawford, and Anne Miller. Judy Garland's husband, Vincent Minnelli, was an originally originally slated to direct, but
her psychiatrists advised them to not work together. Good good cost. Yeah, yeah, you get a cold start today. I think that's my favorite fun fact in a wild good at least atologist And so Gene Kelly was originally cast opposite Judy Garland, but he broke his ankle and the part was then offered to Fred Astair. Oh yeah, so the next one, we're still um talking about Grand lorrel I says, it's like a Dean Martin roast. Rory says, those are never
funny to me. Laurel I says, yeah, they're mean. Rory says, except for Don Rickles. So I second. It was the second Dean Martin reference in the show. Last time was season two episode seventeen. UM. But rumors circulated for years by the way that UM Dean Martin drank on stage during his performances, but it was really apple juice, and his son confirmed that that was true. It was just apple juice. It was all in act and seriously, seriously doubt up. I mean those the rat Pack had more fun, buddy,
in the history of Hollywood. It could have been spiked apple juice. Those guys were hammered for thirty years in a row and um for this pop culture. So Don Rickles was a regular on the Dean Martin Celebrity Roast and he was um a guest of honor on the Variety Show, and he became known as an insult comedian when he responded to his heckler's John Rickles was pretty funny, he was. It was a different time kids, if you're listening in it was a different time when you know
he would not be touring college campuses today. That is funny fact. Don Rickles was in toy story. What was he? Mr? Mr potato Head? Mr potato Head? Don Rickles reigned in an era when people didn't take themselves so seriously and they knew how to laugh at themselves. In fact, that that was a virtue when you could laugh at yourself and didn't take yourself so seriously. Now, uh, it's considered a weakness if you don't take yourself so seriously. Yeah,
and Don Riggles lived to be ninety. He passed away just a couple of years ago, pretty recently. Yeah. Yeah, and the frequent guest in THEE and the Amy Sherman Pelodino home. Oh really yes, her father was a comedian. Oh wow. Up with all these guys like comedians, I think, like the Harvey Corman's and the Dom DeLuise Is. And that's funny because Dom Deloise's son become joins the castes. Danielle has no idea what we're talking out, and she'll
find out. And that's why and that's why Amy writes Laura Lae as as as Don Rickles and and and the Mizelda. Yeah jokes, jokey joke, joke that it's all about stand up comedy. Yeah, excellent in Yeah, alright. So the next one is Rory showing Jess a book in town right before um she asked him to frighten night dinner. Rory says, the Holy Barbarians. I mean, what a title.
And it's by a Venice speech beat Nick about Venice speech beat Nick and on top of and to top it off, the beat nick who wrote it is the father of the guy who does the actor's studio interviews on TV, James Lipton. Yes, so James Lipton actually just passed away in Yeah, but the Holy Barbarians was written by uh Lawrence Lipton, and lip lip In is a beat poet and the father of um inside the Actor's Studio James Lipton. Interesting, I studied, I studied at the
actor's studio. Oh really do hallowed Ground? Yeah? M hm m hm. Yeah. Alright. So the next one, still in the same scene, just says, find somebody who vaguely resembles me, take him, just don't kiss him good night. Rory says that that's not going to work. Just says Andy Warhol did it all the time. So Andy Warhol was the king of pop art and is an lgbt Q icon.
His most famous work he created three Marilyn Monroe screenprint portfolios in nineteen sixty seven, a few years after the actress passed away in ninety two, and the portfolio of the ten screen prints was one of the first Prince Warhol printed and distributed through Factory Editions, New York, and the name of the company refers to his studio known as the Factory sotainly a minute. What are they saying?
Andy war had Warhol did it all the time. So then he directed a short film called Kiss where people kissed for a three minute straight. You did a lot of weird films. Yeah, alright, So now we have Miss Patty's show. UM. Describing her one woman show, she says, it's part stories, parts songs, kind of like Elaine stretched it on Broadway, but without the bitterness. My working title is buckle up on Patty. Shout out to her leopard coat,
which I forgot to mention. It was sort of a leopard shawl coat, which I forgot to mention in the earlier episode this week fashion moment. I feel like she always has one good piece, like something. Yeah, you know, she's not listening to that advice where you're supposed to Who was it? Was it Coco Chanelle that said, like,
get dressed and then take off something Patty. So Miss Patty references e Lanes One Woman Show, UM, which was an autobiography one woman show which is composed of the antidotes of Streeches life, as well as show tunes and Broadway standards that mirror streeches, rise and fall, both on and off the stage, which she wanted Tony for the show. A lot of old timey references in this one. I'm waiting for then there's one coming. There's one coming alright.
Still with miss Patty, she says, did you know I once met the great Betty Davis. I was a chorus still on a bus and truck tour of Guys and Dolls Beantown. I love that town. So Betty Davis with an American actress with a career spanning more than fifty years and a hundred acting credits, UM Steven spiel In two thousand one, Steven Spielberg paid five hundred seventy eight thousand dollars for Betty Davis's Best Actress Oscar from the film Jezebel and Um Guys and Dolls the musical with
music and lyrics by Frank Loser. We talked about somebody who's got too much money? Steven, He's not. What about his next meal? Also, could we at least talk about Kim Karnes's song Betty Davis Size, because at least that that was a big hit in the eighties. Five thou dollars to buy an oscar that seems cheap? Really, is he good? Is he gonna what's he gonna do with it? What is he want it for? I didn't think you were allowed to auction off oscars, but obviously, uh well
they give it to you. Right. This was two thousand one. Has it changed since then? Maybe? I don't know, But could you get to the good current pop culture? The next one's goods, the next one's good and it's with Luke. So this is um. When they're in New York, Luke says, I saw hair Spray last week. Let's get out of the graveyard. They weren't in. Luke and Lorel were in the diner. They were in the I'm sorry, Oh my god, I meant um. It was talking about the talking about
the date and I so. Luke says, I saw hair Spray last week. Lordla says, yeah, I cannot picture you watching hair Spray. Luke says it was okay, I like the producers better. Well, I says, aren't we just a Broadway baby? Side the way? That was a very funny scene. Yeah. I can't imagine Luke going because you're learning that Luke spent on these dates with Nicole even though we haven't
seen them that we're getting the relationship is aggressing. Yeah, he was just a little zippity too little zippity, dude. I'm not saying that. It wasn't really Luke. All of a sudden, Luke's talking about fashion and this guy. We're getting close to the one you want, Amy, How can we pass hair spray? My favorite edition is definitely the zac Efron one that the same same Ricky who was the main Lake that was in the original stage production. Yeah, it was the main Sorry sorry, Ricky Lake was in
the main film. Oh, the original film? Correct? Which one had Marissa Jarrett Winoka? Who knows I've stumped y'all stump which one had James Marsden. Wasn't James Marsdon was with zac Efron and John Travolta. And who was the girl, Nicky Blonsky? Yeah, and it wasn't she found in like Starbucks? Did I make that up? No? So it wasn't open I mean I don't Maybe she worked at Starbucks, but it was an open casting, so it was just like anyone. Yeah, yeah,
she may have worked at Starbucks. Pretty much into James Marsden. I'm not gonna Lie, I kind of love that. What's that movie he did with Patrick Dempsey? Um, the Disney movie? Oh yeah, um with um that girl. Um, and they're doing a new one. Yeah, oh my god, she's so famous, Amy Adams. What is that movie called Somebody Helped Me? Yeah? Alright, So the next one is when Laurel walks into h Jess and Rory making out. Lorli says, it came up
here for a book. It's one of Luke's. Just as well if it's not well, if it doesn't have Encyclopedia Brown in the title, that narrows it down a lot. So. Encyclopedia Brown is a series of books featuring the adventures of a boy detective Leroy Brown, named Encyclopedia for his intelligence and range of knowledge. The series of twenty nine children novels was written by Donald s, Sobel and Uh,
with the first book published in nine three. All Right, ready, Amy, totally, I've been waiting all day for this, Lora, I says, yeah, I found everything, including a couple of coupling Rory and Jess. No, Ben and j Lo. I just love that it's still relevant.
So this When this episode aired in two thousand three, Ben and j Loo were engaged but not yet married, and they called off their engagement in two thousand four, and now they're back together and as of April touch, I'm working all the time now, so I don't know what's going on. And they still together, no engaged, they're engaged again. They got back together in April. They got engaged. Jesus. Yeah, you can't think of Ben and Jlo without thinking of
the music video with on the yacht. That's like and his hairs all like totally, I can't decide if I love them or don't. I think it's like, I don't know if I love them, but I can't stop looking. Yeah, that's a great way to put it. Thank you. I don't hate it. I'm I'm okay with it. I think, yeah, it's fine, that's fine, whatever. I just Jennifer Garner is always just going to be the time. It can't be
Jennifer Garner. Sorry, sorry you. Those two better they better make it work because they they're you know, nobody wants to be alone. Seriously, I do enjoy the TMZ video that captured them looking at some like fancy car and the kid and the kid in the car. Yeah, I mean it must just suck. They just have cameras around them constantly. But yet I think they love it. I'm so glad that. I'm so glad that Hollywood's turned into a place whe it really matters who you're dating. I
love that Amy, who's your dating? I can't reveal that. Yeah, but don't you want to be super famous? Well and in the tabloids like Amy sugarman in and right, you know why I know she's now dating Well, I'd love to day Brad whatever Brad pict Sure, But here's why I would never want to be famous, because once in a blue moon, someone will text me like a picture that I took somewhere, and I literally it can ruin my day if I if I think I look horrendous.
So I can't. But you'd be super famous, No, I can't. If I had to be in the magazines getting paparazzi. I'm just going like, I look bad. It could really derail me. And I'm just opening up to you guys about that, Like, I literally, you're totally safe with us. We don't have this. There's like there's probably safety reasons why I don't want to be famous, and one of them is hideous pictures of myself. I don't really like taking photos as people know, like I don't mind this.
I mean I look like absolute dog do today, but like whatever, I hate photos when people are like, oh, let's take a photo. I'm always like I'm a normal human and I hate talking people at the grocery store. I could not be famous. Do not bother me, but I'm not side my home. Just don't do you put your came to you at a restaurant at dinner and wanted to take like ten photos. I would die. I would die. Okay, we do have one more really good
pop culture reference. It's my favorite. Thank you for the therapy session on how I should never be famous because I look like a troll and photos and I can't it. Alright. So this one is a loyalized probably watching like when they look at the Instagram and going like, could she have possibly brushed her hair? We've whatever, alright. This one's when lorealized packing for her trip. She says, I knew
each piece of clothes clothing. I had to bring down the Spice Girls necklace I planned to weard Saturday morning for breakfast because we agreed to keep it a little whimsical. Rory says, so not your Jonas Salk necklace. Oh. So, Spice Girls, as we all know, is an iconic British girl band. Um back in when they started out, um the magazine A magazine gave them the nickname sporty baby, scary ginger and posh Spice and the rest is history.
What Spiceools were you? Including you, Scott, you have to answer m I always Victoria back because wasn't she a spice girl? Yeah? Yeah, I would be. I would be posh Spice because I would make sure that I would date the rat dude, be super fun. I was definitely sporty. Sporty Spice was so my gal. I like at the wrong age, you didn't do Spice Girls. Oh I'm the
wrong age. But I'm just off just playing along. I'm like like the Victoria Beckham one because I'm forty eight, and I mean you were definitely ginger specs because because I want to play soccer with Beckham. I don't I love David Beckham. What year was the Spice Girls like the biggest I must see? Yeah, like thousand? Yeah right, So I was in college, so we weren't like Spice Girls in it. I was like it, but I feel like they were older. We were acting where we were at.
We were at UM what was it called UM? It was that the we would go to Carmel and there was a race track and they turned it into like a concert venue. It was like, I mean Spice World. The movie is still like. I never saw that. Never, God, I can't I remember. Oh my god, the iconic. It was so good. They all played themselves and what was it They were like, it was a tour bus and it was just great. I just gat I codn't even tell you what the storyline was, but I watched it
so many times. Has never seen it. I think I waited in line to see that for a couple hours. Oh my god, you guys, So did someone just say it was ninety six is when Wannabe came out. I'm too old. I wasn't like graduating high school and college. We were not Spice girls knew So what what was like your band? Trying to remember what was going on in nineties? It was sort of like the grunge was dead, right.
It's like seven, Oh my god, I were at Natalie Merchant and the ten thousand Maniacs, Big Head Todd ten thousand maniacs and it was coming around at that time, not sins worlds, s Club seven. Were there Australian or British. I don't even know what that is? The drum machines. Yeah, we're our little world right now? All right? Well did you so do you dream of a Spice Girls reunion or did they already do that? They had one in last night. They had one in like two thousand. I
want to say ten without without Victoria. I went to that though. How was it? It was great? It was at Staples Center. I just really I hate it when it's not fool like I like InSync with my jam. You can't do insynct reunion without j T. I would
do it. I actually said that. I actually totally respectfully disagree because when they did Coachella with Ariana Grande, that was rad and I would totally go to an in sync concert with You gotta have j C, who was really the star of the whole thing, then Sam, who's singing all the words. Jac can do it, I don't think, but he can't do all of it. But if you think about it for the record, justin should do it. Agree, I give you, just do it. That would be iconic.
I would do I would. I think they should do it without him, only Justin and he's the Victoria Beckham of that situation. What about in Sync Backstreet Boys all of them together minus just Stim So it would take all the Backstreet Boys and then giving that together because no Gallagher will never do it. So it's no Gallagher. Victoria Beckham and Justin Timberlake should form a band that loves Oasis so much she can't help himself. Is it called Oasis? You know what I would die? Is it
called Oasis? Scott? Yeah, you've heard of Wait, Daniel, what would you would? I would die for the Coachella of the nineties. Give me and Sync, give me Backstreet Boys, give me Atlantis, Morrissett, give me spice Nails, Brittany Christina, Jessica Simpson, actually Simpson, Oh my god, you don't know what they wouldn't They could all use the same drum machine. I I would pay top dollars Samantha Mumbo. You mentioned her, I wouldn't pay top dollar for and fake and sinc
I'm my totally down. Well, I will say I went to something that it was It was Lance Joey from in sync and then a J and Nick Carter. It's good. It was great, and I will say it's satisfied by like in sync reunion. It's not because a J can sing. If you have a J and J c all we can sing. We listen, listen, listen. I get a private party with Nick Carter's don't give me. We love Nick, We totally love Nick. Let me tell you something. I get a private thing for a girl's birthday party. She
wanted me to serve the coffee as Luke and I did. Wait, it was cool. I've ever heard Are you serious? Was it like a sweet six teen No? No, she was I think twenty one. She was turned twenty by God. Anyway, So you get a call from my manager saying you just you know, they want to pay you this much money to go over there and and surprising, and you're like, I'm not really nice hotel and in l A and so go over and do it. And I was the one that was surprised because I thought I was the show.
I wasn't the show. He was. Who else was there? Nick Carter? Who else? Carter shows up with my one of my music producers playing guitar for him, right and then a keyboard player, and he put on an amazing show. Can say I mean that guy could be I mean he had what's that one? Yeah right right? So he did. He did all the hits. And I'm just going, damn, this guy is good. He's got all the good he got all the moves. Man, he's just seen this dude. Man, have you seen him? We know him. But one on
one with that girl, she was like melting. She was melting like cheese on the sun. The birthday girl. Oh god. And he would dance with her, grab her hand and get on her knees, singing to her. I mean, this guy, this dude's done this before. Hello. I think they do that in their shows, right, Tara? They do not anymore? They did in their Vegas residence. Have you not been seeing on TikTok all the new kids on the block, TikTok's from there to her? Oh yeah, please, These ladies
are dying. Johnny Wahlberg knows how to work a crowd. Nick Carter, Nick Carter worked, worked that room worked. It was just he's so good at dad and he was having such a good time and she was so delighted. And I'm sitting there thinking all I did was serve a couple of cups of coffee, and you know, nobody's
even looking at me, and then they'll start discussing. Like you know, he started talking to him about, Hey, I'm doing a show in Vegas in a couple of days, and you know, you're all invited, and I'm like, I want to go to turned around and you're not going to embellishing. I'm embellishing. He was great. He was great. Wow mm hmm. We love the BSB. Talk to you all later. I love the boy bands. I'm I love
boy bands. Listen, it doesn't matter when you're up close and they're singing and you can hear those great songs and those great melodies and those great voices. It's all good music. You know, it's all like wow, you know it really, you know, you pay attention, man, it's nice stuff. So yeah, yeah, I love the Talk to you all later. Okay, kids, thanks for downloading. We'll see you until next week. Yeah next week. Wow, that's a big episode. We don't know.
