Pop Culture Minisode (S3 E10 "That'll Do, Pig”)

I just want everyone to know. And for those of you that are like, I'm on I want to listen to Pump Culture because they all interrupt. But then two seconds later there's someone that's like, I love the interrupting. So we're trying to make everybody happy. That's our main goal. We want everyone to love this. There was a comment that I thought was particularly astute. Is that the right word like smart? Like and we need to do it. So the person basically said, we need to really explain

or discuss the context. I'll give you an example in this episode, Uh, lorea Lie says they're here, and it was when they're at lower Lines at our house and the Gilmore's and Tricks have come to the door and she says they're here, and it's a reference to Poltergeist. So in the eighties, the original polter Geist movie came out with Craig T. Nelson if you can Love It, and the big line from the movie was the little girl says they're here, and the reference is about the

Poulter guys, like the ghosts, the bad guys. We're in the TV and they were here, so they want us to a little bit do a little more of explaining. Like the reason that line is so funny is because she's basically saying, the Poulter guys are at the door. So take it back to the episode basic. Yes, So thank you two whoever wrote that. You make an amazingly good point. I'm not I can't promise we won't interrupt each other, but we will try to do. It's not possible.

Interrupting will occur. It's not possible. And how boring would it pay if somebody spoke and then there was a pause and no, I think you can go ahead and speak now. I think though I appreciate that critics criticism, it's a really good yeah, that was really valid criticism, very very much, so thank you and the person I wrote that while I was on vacation, and I sent that in That's how I operate, Ladies and gentlemen. Rather than going to the group text, he went to Instagram. Tara,

all right, well, let's get started with Lorelai and the spider. UM. This when Dean comes over and she sees the spider is the reference to Annie Hall. Lorelai says, don't kick the cup. Dean says the what I have a spider whose previous credits include the bathtub scene from Annie Hall trapped under that cup. So this is the third time that um Annie Hall has been referenced in the show.

There was one in season two, another one season three earlier, episode six UM, but the specific scene was referencing when Annie Hall calls alv over at three am to kill a big black spider in the bathroom. They had broken they had broken up. Oh, just similar to Dean. Annie and Woody had broken up and then they were missing each other, and she called him, there's spider three. I'm just the same. And he looks at it and he comes out of the bathroom and he goes, it's the

size of a buick. Right, It's a funny line. You can laugh amongst yourselves. You don't have to just stare at me like I'm a freaking Wallpag do me a favor. Interrupt, Okay, because you know I almost fell asleep in that introm I've never seen any hall. No one cares. Have you never seen any hall? No? But I love Diane Keaton so much. Oh that's a classic film, Danielle, sorry to be distracted. Danielle just wrote everybody a no b RB. She probably has to go potty, but go ahead, Tara.

All right. So the next one is when Tricks unexpectedly visits Um Richard's birthday party. Richard says, wonderfully, they're spoiling me rotten. Emily even got me the most beautiful humid door. It's from nineteen seventeen and was owned by a lieutenant

in World War One. Trick says, you know, your father had a humid humid door that was owned by Victor Hugo, and we just referenced this in the last episode UM with Hunchback of Notre Dames Quasimodo reference Um and Victor Marie Hugo was a French poet, novelist, essays, playwright, and dramatists in the Romantic movement and um. Though regarded in France as one of the country's greatest poets, he's better

known abroad for such novels as Notre Dame. Dave Perry are the ones I want to interrupt because hunchback and Notre Dame let me? Can you say with the accent? Let me? Let me up? I can't do accents. I can't do accents. I can sing back in the saddle again. Okay, moving right along, folks. See see we're trying not to interrupt each other. But it doesn't that just flatten everything hang out, I mean, it's just flat. Come on, man, we gotta get in there and mix it up with

each other. And I felt like a big dork this next one. I couldn't pott point well, thank you your hair loss. We can interrupt your hair. I like your hair like a twist you on one side. I like that you can interrupt me. This next one, Amy, because I want you to sing, interrupt you. But even before you even get it to see, I'm gonna interrupt any interrupting you and Danielle's moaning and groaning, We're gonna interrupt that to sound like a mess. Go ahead, we never

do stop it. We're playing jazz. I'm ready, I'm gonna try and to sing. Okay. So this next one is when Tricks is asking Lorela how her like. It's not actual singing, it's trying singing. It's so true accurate. Think I'm a good singer, but everyone else is like, you're standing managed standing in front of twenty thousand people. Listen the next song I'm gonna try to sing last week. It shows a real confidence in the artist. I have

to see what I'm gonna sing. I'm ready, okay. So this is Tricks asking Lorelai how her life is going, and Lorela says I'm single. Trick says by choice? Or do you scare the men from your independence? And she says, actually I scared them with my mini pearl impression? Can you do the mini pearls? The tag on her hat? So I well, let me let me read some fun to do it. I can't, Like, I literally watched a YouTube video because she says how do you? But says it a certain way, and I was like, there's no

way I can do this. She just had that tag on her hat, remember that? Yes, So Sarah Ophelia Coolie Cannon professionally asked her stage character Mini Pearl was an American comedian who appeared at the Grand Old Opry for more than fifty years and on the television show he Haw from nine. She was a man hungry woman. She was also Danielle's back. Guys, did you go to the party. We didn't know. I a messenger came to pick up something, so I just had to give it to sounds fancy. Sorry,

Scott loves he Haw. I did not love he Haw as much as Scott. Come on, what a show. All that straw. That's great. I love that show. My sister in law, dude, get you like a car. Something's wrong with her car because she said a hay barrel came out of nowhere, and we're like, hey, bail whatever, Hey, not a barrel, not a barrel of hay, it's a bale of hay. He really, yeah, I've always said barrel, a barrel of hay, barrel of true. Hey, it doesn't

come in barrels, it comes in bales bail. So like when you go to like a hooting nanny, you're sitting on a hay bale. You're not sitting on a barrel at You're right, I've just always said barrel me too, obviously, I just said it. So at the Fall Festival they sit on hay bales. Yea much as a hay bale square inch, how much we don't know? Nice seating at a party. To take it back to the episode, the

reason why this, um, thank you. The reason that this was said is because Mini Pearl was very man hungry and um she was um you know for her, like her chatter about catching a feller, catching a feller, that's great catching. This one is my favorite line from the show, actually my favorite pop culture moment. This is when Tricks talks about renting her house and her in Hartford and she says a rock and roll group of some sort I believe they call themselves Corn, and loyal Loyalize says,

you rented your house to Corn. So Corn is an American new metal band from Bakersfield, California formed and the band is notable for pioneering the new metal genre and bringing it to the mainstream. And in Corn they spell at ko r n the rs backwards and it actually comes from the Toy Toys r US logo UM logo because many of the band members worked at Toys r S.

That's so cute, right. I also would love to mention that I think Tricks was like, oh, there's you know, like Corn, you know whatever, Like as if Tricks would know who Corn is, Like they do not run in the same circles at all. No, you know what, Yeah, I'll bet you she's enough of a psycho where she listens to Corn at eight years old, she's just rocking out.

She's just like, you know, that's what they played at her in the asylum to calm her down, all right, And then the last a little fun fact about that, which is really even more bizarre that um she referenced Corn. The founding member Jonathan Davis, went to morticians school. When he was sixteen, he began working at a local Corners office helping out with the cadavers, and then he worked on human remains until he joined the band. Wow. Yeah, it's a beautiful story. So we're moving on to Rory

threatening Francy in the bathroom. Yeah, and Rory says, what is wrong with you? So what if Paris as a boyfriend, you don't think that, You don't think that as hard as Paris works in school or for on the Franklin or on the school council. You don't think that she deserves having a boyfriend and to enjoy it. Francis says, hey, no one is nine Gidget a chance to snag Moondoggie. That was funny for the clam bake, but the rest of us have things to accomplish. I didn't get this one,

but I also to get it. Sie frank was at Frankie avalon and Sally Moondoggie was her boyfriend and Moondoggie And then there's a quick reference there too for Marlowe Thomas versus Tina Louise, And I assumed the Tina Louise was who was ginger. This is the next one. Should we just move right alonger? Alrighty? So that's when Francie says, you did not want to be my enemy Marlo Thomas, and then Rory says, I think I do Tina Louise. That was the line, Marl. Why were they referencing Marlo?

I didn't get because it would have been the person that played h Marlo. Marlo Thomas was that girl? So actually, yeah, that girl right? She had her own shows with Thomas. She was Danny Thomas's daughter, right right, seems to have the answer. Yeah. Shout out to Hannah, our producer, who actually put some notes because I wouldn't have known. But Marlo Thomas had long, dark hair like Rory and played

roles whole like the wholesome girl next door. And then Tina Louise is an actress best known for um playing Ginger Grant, and she had red hair like Francy on Gilligan's Island. On Gilligan's Island, Yes, she was. She She was the bombshell on She was the Hollywood starlet, whereas most people had a crush on Mary Anne, the wholesome girl. It was that was the old like Monica Rachel or Phoebe. It would be like, do you like Marianne? I mean, you know, Tina Louise was not approachable as the starlett,

but Marianne was the friendly one. Yeah, neither is Francy. I don't think she's either. Come on, alright. The next one is dean sister Clara asking Rory to go to the carnival with her. Indean Clara says, Rory just said, you had things to do. Jess says, hey, tattoo, just look at the plane. Will you? Tattoo was a character from Fantasy Islands. It was like a little inappropriate. He was so mean to that girl, wasn't he was? He had a little tricksy vibe about him, didn't he He

just hated everybody. Yeah, there was a lot of mean people and it was Yeah, Jess was being just mean. He just he just he was in over his head, right, the guy was in over his head. He couldn't handle it, all those feelings churning inside him. Ah, I just needed a hug from his uncle, slow it down, down. And with that line on Fantasy Island, Tattoo is in a watch tower screaming the plane, the plane, and ringing a bell.

So that's where that reference goes back to. Al Right, so this is Clara is still annoying Jess at the carnival. Clara says, you missed every time. Jess says, I can't concentrate with your alloying, annoying voice, yammering on it all. You can't say that WHOA was in the script? Yeah. I when I listened to that, I literally was like, oh, you can't say that. Yeah, No, I noticed that too, And then reading about she's just reading sorry, I'm reading the script, but I did notice. Yeah, you cannot, that

is it's not an acceptable word. Yeah, no, no, But then he continues and says, it's like having Stewart little shoved in my ear. Oh, I mean funny that parts that parts funny. But yeah it didn't it didn't. Um. Well, yeah, I want to know how Milo the actor didn't we no, Milo the statue, Milo the actor didn't crack up laughing. Maybe that's a question I need to ask him. She was hysterical. H that's actually really how do you keep a strange face? True? Her comedic timing Janius and her

that hers is obvious, right, Yeah, we like her. So this one, Amy, um, this next one. Amy, you asked, what is the title of the episode from Do you guys want to take a guess? I did my guess. I gave my guess. I don't even a movie about a baby. There you go that I'll do. Pig is a ppular catchphrase adopted from the legendary film Babe, in which the protagonist is a pig acting as a shepherd dog. Okay, so basically just a reference to the Babe. I think I think we all saw that one night in an

altered state of consciousness, and nobody remembers it. And this is the second babe reference in the show. We also had one in season two. All right, and this is the last one for this episode. Um Rory says, there's a snow cone in the freezer for you. Lorlai says, how did it find? How did it finally end with Cheech and Chong? Although I don't think they're cheaching Cheong, they seem Cheech and Sean got along. I was gonna say I never watched Cheech and Chong, but I was like,

I don't think that makes sense. Tonight, cancel all your plans and download Up in Smoke. These guys are like stoner gods. They made an entire van. They're still going strong. Their van that they cruising in. That movie is made out of pot. It's one of It's one of the funniest movies you'll ever see. Were genius um under my fun facts, it says. In a Yahoo interview, Cheech and Chong said they weren't actually under the influence while filming Up in Smoke. Well you couldn't be. To a film

that's true, well done. We went off the rails a little bit there in the beginning middle, But I feel like we did good here. A little, a little, you know, banter back and forth never hurts anyone. We're back in the saddle. Oh my god. Eventually game, you're gonna do the eehaw. I don't even know how that's like the dukes. It's like no, She goes like, I Google looks it up on YouTube because I had no idea how to do it. You can do it like that. Oh yeah, yeah,

wasn't that bad? That was pretty good. I wasn't expecting that to come out. You hit that note. I mean, you opened that golden throat, and now now it came for the Duke's a hazard that when they practicing, I was like, oh my god, for a dog. She's looking at me like, what is happening over there?
