I am all in. I am all in with Scott Patterson and I Heart Radio podcast. Hey everybody, Scott Patterson, aimil and podcast want to eleven productions. iHeart Radio. I am joined by my intrepid crew, Tera Suit, Daniel Romo, Amy Sugarman, Hello Wall How is my goodness? One? We are? We're gonna We're gonna break down episode two, season five, and uh, who's doing the the The synopsis today always Danielle. But I was gonna say that somebody else want to do it? But no, I did like to double down
on my Uh, season five is the best season ever? Like, is do we have enough Wait a minute, do we have enough data to make that? Well? She just likes that logan affairs soon Let's be honest. No, because first of all, yes, a but okay, okay, I love this episode also, so I'll just pipe down. And as they say, it might be too small a sample size, good the data, I don't. The data is definitely favorable so far, I'll say, But Danielle, why don't you get us into the air?
Yeah it is, Yeah, it is neck Let's give her. That's good. Okay. So this is season five, episode two, A messenger nothing more air date September twenty eighth, two thousand and four. With Lorala and Rory's relationships still strained and unresolved. Lorala takes on everything at the end until Suki convinces her to take some time off. At the corner of Bark and Cheese, Rory realizes she is wrong and writes Dana letter, which she asks her mom to deliver.
Lane begins to see Zach and the New Light, and Lindsay finds Rory's letter. Would he leaves Dean out in the cold and without either girl? Who directed this? H Daniel Palladino, Well, here's what's weird. I felt like it was a very new directing style. Did you guys notice that at all? In what way? Camera angles, new parts of the town. Just I think being in Europe kind
of made it feel that way. You mean fake Europe obviously. Yeah, well yeah, yeah, hard to do that with you know, it's like California sunshine ruins every shot, right, So I just thought, even right from the start, yeah oh really, so, so you weren't You weren't vibing it? Oh totally vibing, were vibing? It just seemed different, just different. I don't mind different like the open. She's walking. I think we maybe started on her shoes. I like it too. Just
say I like that opening. It's quick. Did you think it was quick because we had such a long previously on it was pretty long. Yeah, you're right, so that opened was real quick. I think, you know, we got a couple of good laughs out of the open. She handed off the pamphlet to somebody else and said exactly the same thing as the pamphleteer said. And it was funny, and the apple fell over, the kid in the apple
suit fell over. Somehow you a couple of really, but you know you got you nailed the town and what the town is about, all the goofy, great charming stuff happening in the town. And there she is walking along, And is that our first time seeing the newspaper stand? I don't think I don't all. No, I don't think so. Also that people believe I kind of am in one of them that when she says, hey, Al, Hey, Fred, that that's Al from Al's Pancake World, Well who else
would it be? Right? It's another owl? I don't think so. But it's right that they never go to Al's Pancake world right, like, actually, like, go there, I think its just talked about it. It's just take out. Yeah, I think, no, you can eat there, No, no, but they usually take it. But it was a great opening, punchy to the point, funny, breezy everything, stars hollow, everything you love about Stars Hollow,
great opening, great, great, great opening. And there you are with your lead actress looking fantastic acting right, a little bit of a new haircut, I thought, maybe just a little shorter, loving every second of it. Look good. Yeah, everything was working everything was it kind of weird to anybody that, like, we just jumped seven weeks. It took me a second because I was wondering how many weeks it was, and I think like later in the episode,
someone said it's been seven weeks. I was like seven weeks, yeah, but how many? How many episodes are you going to be able to do in Italy? No? I know, but I wasn't mad about it at all. I wasn't mad either, but I was like, whoa, that was like jarring from episode one to two, just automatically seven weeks later, here we are. For me, it was more jarring that Luke was away for seven weeks and Rory wasn't more than
like the timeline of what's happening. Here's why I like it though, and I want to hear what Scott says because I don't want to rush into them. I like that now we've dragged out this seven weeks and clearly they're talking on the phone all the time like a cute little couple like cording as they say, like because they didn't talk on the phone every day like that,
and clearly now they are right. Yeah, it's a tease within a tease within a tease, and it's just like it's been four four seasons here we're in the fifth season. We're still getting delays, delays within delays, and then you know, not to jump ahead, but even that sort of welcome back kiss, you know they get, they get that was so funny that just a just a piggyback off the seven weeks thing. Rory's hair is significantly longer and Dean's
hair it just go away. So my question, my question is do you think they filmed episode one right after they filmed the finale and took a break between one and two and then you guys picked up with season five question because also seasonsode one was so much connected to the finale, and they probably didn't want people to look different. Scott, like the like would have been like a two part finale, and they just decided to push
it to the I don't know. It could be that Jared did a film over the hiatus and he just finished up at the end of his hair was shorter in the film. Well, but here's my thing. You had to have such strict continuity between the end of season four and the beginning of season five that it would have been really jarring if anyone changed it all. You know what, you had a really good point we're talking about from episode Okay, so the end of season four and the beginning of season five. Oh sorry, yeah, I
got it right. End of season four, beginning of season five is the same night that maybe you shot it all back in April or March or Yeah. It is interesting because season five, episode one can be a finale, you know, like Rory goes to Europe, Like that could be a finale. Somebody look this up. When did they film Yeah, like, this has got to be on the internet somewhere. I think you might be onto something, Daniel. I think that they filmed it in spring of what
year is it two thousand and four? I think they filmed season one, Season five, episode one, spring of two thousand. Like Jared Petelec, you can very easily cut his hair, you know what I mean? Like that, It's not the one that kind of gave it away to me. It was more Rory's hair was longer. I'm like, she's like, you know what I mean, like she that was definitely some time be too. Yeah, I agree. I agree with you. We need to get somebody to figure that out. And
I think Luke lost a little weight, Yes he did. Luke. I also think your teeth looked super white and smiley. Did anyone notice that? No, it's just because I was smiling a lot often. Rather chipper episode, there's this big smiley guy. He smiled at his sister. He smiled. Oh, he's smiling like a like a just a smiley smile. Everywhere he went. There's rainbows and butterflies melting is necklace giver. When we go into the diner for the first time with Lane, nobody else noticed that was sort of a
new angle at the table. Yes, yeah, yeah, yes, that it was definitely noticeable for sure. But it's like, you know, Dan has his very special take on things. Yeah, you know, do you think Luke feels about the free wink Winkers? I mean he's not there, it's not there. Yeah, I just need to know what Lane's like work schedule is because it feels so inconsistent to me, Like somebodys that the diner someday she's not. So, you know, it's just like I just need to figure out, like every Monday,
Lane is, he's a student, is a student. She works at the diner and she's in the band. Where does she go to school that that very strict religious member for college, I know what it's called. So she's in college. She's in a freshman year in college, or finished her freshman year in cost So this the summer and she's so yeah, she's just she doesn't have a summer schedule like band rehearsal. Yeah, she can have a different schedule because it's summer. Yeah, because she's full time now that
Luke's not there. Yash took over. These are in a Caesar salad. I can't wait to talk about them. Yeah. So, so Aris had a big scene there. I think that was his biggest scene. He did great. Can anyone do that? You know how he did the eyebrows. Can anyone do that? You know how instead of wink winkers? Oh whoa, it's hard having gotten botox in a minute, you can really see it, I know. And then what's his doos He brings out the pennies to pay basically paying for his burger.
Oh yeah, he's like long story counting, like who has coins anymore? Not now? Back then they did? I missed. I missed. There was no Sean Gunn in this episode. I know. Oh my god, you're right, no Sean Gunn and many opportunities for him to interject. You know, no way, boy, you really notice it when when Sean isn't in the episode. Yeah, especially in the diner. I feel like he's always hanging in the diner. Yeah. I want to get the other you know, there's the other regular diner guy, Caesar, and
then there's the other guy. Oh, there's right. I want to find that guy too. We need to find that guy, Robert. I'll text him, okay, great, great. But also I did notice that the fries are steak fries, which I support. Are you anti? Like, do you actually st advocate against? Do you march? Do you get together with people and like pretty discriminatory with fries. I am because I don't. I don't love a Frinklerench fry space. I don't love a Yeah, I'm active in the French fried space. Thank you, Scott.
I don't love a crinkle, except if I had the choice, if you were like steak, shoe string, crinkle, curly, I'm not going for curly. I don't like. I'll take I'll take any any fries. Same shoe string is at the bottom of my list. Yeah, we usually do shoe string at home, but then every once in a while on Burger night we get the fatter fries like a steak fry. Well, it's not a steak fry, it's in between a string. Wow. Okay, there's a space. There's people that are very like experts
like I am on French. Yes, you own a diner obviously, and it's a certain brand that we use it. Boy, those burgers tastes all right or no? Right? I agree? I agree? Yeah, wait, okay, this is actually sorry to go on a side tangent, but I think this is important. Who do you think of the like fast foods, McDonald's, in and out, like shack, whatever you like has the best fries in and out easy. Oh, I was gonna say McDonald's, but shake shack if you want cheese fries,
I don't know. And in and outs animal fries, Trump shake shucks cheddar fries. But they're different because animal fries is like it's like cheese. Yeah, there is animal I don't eat. I don't like anything off fries. It's really difficult to beat McDonald's fries. Yeah, kind of like salty, like just salty plane fries. Yeah. Like I can only eat in and Out when I want the animal fries. I can't do it, Plaine, Oh, I can't. I don't like animals. I've been seriously in my own eyeland blasphemers.
I know, take this to the people because literally this is a debate that could go on for forever. And I love in and out fries. We we do in and out Burger once while, so do I. It's really the only fast food I do. Like it's like on the fries stay hotter longer in the bag. I kind of agree with you. There's something about the in and out fries that cool off very quickly. I think it's the setting because they come in that sort of a more of a wider thing where it's nighted around them.
I am hungry. If you get the animal fries, you get the animal fries. I just that's so bross. I don't like cheese, Oh my god, no, but it's cheese with a special sauce. Dippers, dippers in the catchup or do you go plane? Oh no, plane, Yeah, I'm not a condimate guy at all. You know what, I'm gonna throw another French fry in the mix and then we can maybe move from this. Don't say Burger king. I'm sorry,
but I'm not Chick fil A's waffle fries. Oh no, no, yes, no, yes, with the Chick fil A sauce, with the chick you have d you think so? I think let's okay, so we'll try that. But the worst wait a minute. Once the last time you ordered a large McDonald's fries and like two weeks ago, justus, I eat half of that before even take burger. Let me tell you the worst. I apologize in advance. Who Del Talco. They're not, but there are they known for fries, the fact that they
have fries. It's just you've never been to I've been to Del Taco, but I don't know, like years ago, I don't go way Days has pretty good Wendy's has pretty good fries. I'll give you that. I'm just going down the list. I'm thinking of everything on my drive. But i'm in and out of McDonald's. I think only But then I like, to me, a gourmet is like shake shack. That's like a level up. Yeah, it's a little different. Shake shacks a little different. You know, it's
kind of a moneyed crowd. I see a fried bride test. How oh, I will probbibly participate? Sign me up? All right? So we head from there to the Renaissance. Fair well done. I actually thought that looked way we missed something in the first scene the postcards, Paul is Rory writing postcards to Luke. That's Lane, Lane hanging them at She's taken them from home to the din. She's taking over the diner space. It's because she can't be away from from
Rory's postcards. That was random, but I get the point. That's I mean, if Laura I can relate to missus Kim. Ever, this is the moment WHOA also through that? Wow? Yeah? Yeah? But Lane takes hangs them up in Luke's dining exactly, Scott, she carries them around with her. I was I was thinking, like, she knows that Lane were there and sending it to the flag on the play. Yeah, why would she get him at home, pack him up and take them to
the No, that's what I'm saying. Maybe she she knows that Lane's taking over the diner for the sub sending them, and so she's sending it to Luke's That's what I thought. All right, Oh you know why, so she doesn't have Lane's address, she just knows she's going to be at the diner more. Yeah, maybe I don't know. I mean, right, it's an overthink because I'm good with the plot point being like, Oh, I don't think it's an overthink at all.
I think we need to figure this out because this is she's just sending them to Luke the whole time. There are two flags on the play, so we need to go thinking through that. I mean I think that I think she's Yeah, she's she's making a collage with the diner for some reason. She misses her friend. It's a little much, right, a little weird. Yeah, all right, I mean back when we used to have desk back in twenty nineteen. You would put stuff on your desk,
you know, like pictures and then but they aren't. So their passions run deep for their friendship, right. I think we've dissected bride and postcards. We definitely. Then we go to the Renaissance Fair, which uzza I thought was Man, I gotta tell you, Michael, Sorry, that's Michael Day Luis Jesus. He's funny. He picks up his drink with the hand, the hand, get the drink. Ok. Look, I mean it was just like every beat of that guy's performance was
just outstanding. He really takes you know. Yeah, he's the definition of there are no small roles, just small actors. He took that role by the throat and owned it, and he stole every scene. He was in, every single scene with your eye went right to him, and I waited, I anticipated what he Who's going to do next? Controversial thought. I don't know that I would hear about Liz without t J. I agree with you. I do agree. TJ makes that because he makes that good Well, I agree, No,
that's a good point, excellent point. So the fair and Luke has fully immersed himself in the fair, like he knows all the gossip. He knows everything. It's it's good. It was good that has Hassa was hysterical. And Third, when they cut to the crowd, the lead hassan or in the crowd was Daniel Paladina. No, yes, we get the video up. I could show you and only Daniel Peladine, he dressed up. Where is he? It's Hassassa. Okay, okay. I think the huzzah comes in the different scene though,
doesn't it. Let's see. Yeah. I think by the way, the final beautiful presentation Liz has for her jewels, the tree necklace, I must say I give a good Morrow to the tree because it's a well way. It's an excellent way. Good detail here, Like, I feel like I'm at a Renaissance fair. Yeahs, who raise your hand? Have been to a Renaissance fair? We did one in the middle school. You guys want to know how why I
had to go to a Renaissance fair? Why? This is probably in the nineties, maybe the early aughts, as they say, somehow they convinced Ryan Seacrest to go and do all that, and I had to go with him to do the Renaissance fair, and he had to get all in the outfit and we had to like do the whole deal. There is a Renaissance fair in LA Maybe it's Pasadena or something like that, but it's like a big deal. That was the one we went to. Okay, might say it's in Pomona, but I'm not sure. Yeah, I think
that's right. I think you feel like Easton. If you're listening, I know you've been Easton. I've been to the Renaissance Fair. Yeah, the Renaissance Pleasure Fair in Irwindale, California. That's very good. Where is that, Scott? I'm surprised you've never been at a Renaissance fair. Not my bag, my bag, No, not my bag. Never wanted to dress up in chainmail and be a I do think they have turkey legs though, Oh for sure. Oh yeah, yeah, my bag. Um, but
it looks like fun. Looks like fun. The line that made McDonald's all gone, The line that made me so hard when you said, I'm not moving the pewter. I'm not moving the pewter because he's like, you need to move the pewter from the whatever, good whole thing. Liz was listening to her Deepak Chopra. Yeah, I loved it. Tell you you know a t J dropping his renaissance fair knowledge. It's just hysterical, totally really great. Then we go go to the fanciest hotel I've ever seen. Oh yeah,
as we be bopped over to Europe. I would love to travel with the California Light one hundred percent. I want to nap in the middle of the day and stay in the nicest hotel rooms. Like, nothing sounds better than traveling with Emily Gilmore. That Rose was the last stop, right, yeah, we're in Rome. Yeah, that trip was a fifty thousand dollars trip to you easy easy take it back to hundred thousand dollars. And all she wanted to do is
ditch Granny to go solo. Comes I like us. She was like the pillars moved, like I know, and Roy was like, I'm pretty sure that ancient ruins haven't moved. That was funny. I was funny. Oh, she just always has to complaint about something. Yeah, yeah, I did. Like how in that scene she was like, what was the last time we called your mom? Yeah? I really respected that because I think that I think that Emily knows something's up but just doesn't want to get it involved,
doesn't want to get into the drawing. Yeah, so she's like, let's call your mom. Yeah, I know we're not there yet, but boy was I happy when that ended, when that tension end, saying but it wasn't in a nice sense of relief when they connected on the phone call and it's like a totally totally I finally got the Gilmore girls back, you know, like we haven't had that in a minute. Exactly, yeah, exactly. So then we go from your to the end and the escue brochures Michelle's tiding,
which I thought was a funny bit. Those crumbled kids. What did you guys all think? And then we start to see that lorelize off the rails. Um. Yeah, definitely a good bit with the kids, very funny. Um Michelle being wacky and being inappropriate and sort of still being lovable, which is a testament to unich. Um. Yeah, we learned that Michelle is a prophet participant. I think we knew, but oh, yeah, he's a prophet, which means he gets commission. Is that what that means? Oh, he's an owner of
the end. He gets equity in the end. He's got he's got enough. They made that's why he was, you know, seeking other employment to enhance his negotiating position. Yeah. Remember when they got he knew how much he was valued. So he said, give me a piece of the action, which remember that fake W. It looked like a W. And then they get him back, they get they probably him a salary. Plus he gets, like, I don't know, some percentage of the of the prophet. I seem yeah,
good for him. Yeah. The gut is, if they're let's say they're partners, he's probably got like they probably are like forty five forty five ten or you don't think he's getting Suki and Laurela are equal partners. Well, aren't you a partner too? Actually yes, I do think lore lions. I agree, But you've got a piece I did. Did I even ask for a piece or just give up the money? No, you did not ask. I invested, you gave a liney right, I consider an investor, So yeah,
I probably took fifteen twenty percent. Maybe that's what I think. So I think. Okay, So say they're at thirty five thirty five, Michelle's at a ten. I think Michelle's got to be higher because they got to give him salary I think they gotta give Sukie salary too, right, No, you don't think take its salary. How I don't think Lorelai or Suki are taking a salary. They're just taking a piece of the profits. But they can take piece of the profits every month. That is salary. No, technically salary,
it would be like a number. So say the inmates a grand salary would be a minimum guarantee. So this is after they reinvest. So it's like a dividend, so like a monthly day. So say that. So say this is how I would run that that in has really operated like an ETF. I don't know what an ETF is, but it sounds fancy. So I would do it like this. At the end of the month, you get So say all the money they the gross is one hundred thousand, They pay all their bills, they pay all their servers
and housekeepers and everybody. So then say at the end of the month they got maybe that takes half the thing. They got fifty thousand, they've paid Michelle, So then they give Michelle his piece. No, the margins on that kind of a business is not good. I don't think it's very good. I think it's probably expenses not a good business. It's tough. I think the diner runs. Oh I got that place running like a you're making time. I'm just stockpiling cash. Yeah, that burger costs you two bucks, you
sell it for ten. Give me a break, come out. But all right, okay, So I do like how I continues to talk about the randy men that are flirting with her the whole time, trying to make herself feel better. Oh my god, the call, the awkward call, which which spawned the greatest line in the one of the great lines in the episode Hot and Sexy? Were you wearing that hot and sexy sandwich board? I also like the awkward phone call when she's all, oh, what a cowinkyding?
The awkward call was freking painful. Yeah. Yeah. And as much as the Renaissance Fair looked realm, the cafe dead Lapin, Yeah, that was more fake. I was like, oh, I've been there on the waterline. Yeah, did you say did you see the fake Italian guy smoking a cigarette right there? It's like, man, there's just no, that's not how. And then I do love when she's like says something about the men flirting with her, and then Rory says, you
got the gams, Grandma, I loved it. Um yeah, so other than the fakeness of Europe, which is impossible to capture outdoors, give me you get you know, that is such an incredibly difficult lighting project to try to make it look like Europe. I mean, hotel looked good with an appearance by Anthony A Zizi, who's gone on to do so many things. He was the I sort of
thought he was the hotel manager. So we go back and now we've got we're back at Luke's, which apparently is like we're laying in the band really hang out now. Oh and they're talking about their cover songs. And then the girls zax got the Ladies, one of whom was Aaron Foster. Oh my gosh, I didn't even didn't even see that. Okay, so Scott, we know the girls here. We know Aaron Foster because she's the Foster sisters. And then they started this clothing line called Favorite Daughter, and
they're like influencers. But you would know Aaron Foster because you know David Foster, the musician does the composer. Yes, that's one of his daughters. Oh okay, yeah, so yeah, David she's the one that came in back back into the diner and said, sorry, we didn't know. Yes, yes exactly. So wow, oh my gosh, you have eagle eyes. Even me. Yeah, I just knew I recognized her. And then I cheated it on the internet, but I knew it. I recognized her immediately. I was like, I know her. I don't
know her. She looks different, but I'm like, I know that girl. Huh past Yeah. I thought that was a good tidbit. We'll see if the crackstaff had that, We'll see. So anyway, Lane is starting to get irritated. Well, let's talk about set lists for bands, because you know what they were doing was decimating their set list to try to enhance their originals. Very bad idea, you know. I mean, if you've got great covers and you do those covers, well you're gonna make money. You work in an original
here and there. If you're really ballsy, you know you have mostly originals and you have a couple of covers because you have to have You can't have an all original set. It won't work. People stand there and like stare at you. Right, even if you're like Elton John, you got to work in your hits with your couple new songs exactly exactly so, and bands that failed to do that and failed to play their hits. Boy, that's
a long night. That's a long night. Here's our new we're a new album and we haven't released it yet, but we'd like to play it for you. And you're like, yeah, nine songs from it come. We have nothing attached to this, we have no emotional investment in. Well, that's why I always use, in the words of Tricia Yearwood, who I love, she said, and I use this quote all the time, sing the one that's bring you, Sing the one that
brung in. Its Like, if you don't sing your big hit, even if you're sick of it, you are not You're disappointed. Can you imagine a rolling gig without Jimmy Shelter because they got sick of playing or jumping Jack Flash? Are you kidding me? Right? Kidding me? Yeah, it'd be a riot. I agree. So we do see the start of Lane being irritated, which we soon find out she loves Zach. But what did you think right away when she was irritated?
I think she didn't even realize, like until I think she didn't realize until Aaron Foster came back and I was like, oh, I'm so sorry I didn't realize. And then I think Lane was like, oh, that's what's going on. Like I think it took her a second too, because I think they started out as friends. And then it felt like too much of a stretch for me. Really, it was way too much of a stretch. And I know that, Yeah I got I pulled a muscle trying to get there too. Yeah, Zach, I don't mind me.
There's sort of cute airheady, but like, yeah, it's sort of cute. It's it's more, it's more that it's more the storyline for yeah, I got it, you know, trying to get there and yeah, I Danielle, how did you? Yeah, Like even if he if she just like prior to this moment, there was absolutely no connection, like zero, Like it wasn't like she was like, oh, I like your shirt and then she would walk you know, like or whatever.
Like there was no flirting whatsoever. So this felt very random, random student, and it felt like, oh, we need to give Lane e love interest since Dave Regowski we know's not coming back. Adam Brody's a huge star never we'll be back on the show again. So zach here you go, right, like, they didn't bring someone else and they were like, he's already here, let's just give Yeah, it's a sale as
old as time. Though, guys, fallen in love with your bandmate? Sure, but she did that already, you know, like I think she fell in love with right right, she did it with Dave. She did it with Dave. That was a big one for the fans, and it was and that one was real, you felt it, and they took the time to develop that. So yeah, I see your point. It was kind of out of left field. Yeah, I
was yeah, yeah, see, we'll see how that goes. Not that I'm saying it wouldn't be an excellent relationship, for sure. That one was so good. So then finally we get Sukie calling out Lorelai like you've gone nutty, which I agree. I literally wrote, Lorelai is nuts And then Suki's like you've gone nutty, and I'm like, thank you Suki, right, I thoughts exactly, it's been like seven weeks of this. Yeah, another great line from Suki. You know, nutsos don't know
they're being nutsos, Hence the nutty totally. I think about that all the time. I'm like, am I crazy? And then I'm like, oh, if I think I'm crazy, I'm probably not crazy, right exactly. Yeah, crazy doesn't know they're crazy. Yeah. I think they're saving the world. I think they're Jesus right. Yeah. So again, more excellence from Melissa McCarthy just playing just
just Melissa is so good. I love watching her, and especially in these heightened excited states where it's just all like, you know, when she's when she's taking over the scene, when she's driving the scene, it's like, yes, love it. Yeah. Somebody voted on the Instagram that she still just has not won an Academy Award. Academy Award, but I think it was just an Emmy just just I'm possibly a globe.
She's possibly got a Golden bug. It was for Mike and Molly, But for as brilliant as she is, you would think she would have like ten just in a cover sometimes for an Oscar. Was it for that kind of weirder movie? It was the the film I thought it was bridesm Yes, she was nominated for an Oscar for that. I thought she was nominated for this weird
movie where she was like a author. I think she was nominated for that too, I think, and I'm looking while we talk about the fact that, Thank goodness, right after that scene, we get the phone call is, oh, she better not be like, you know, Lifetime Achievement Award honorary. Yeah, wait, what is it? Just get them for bats? No, stopped for the win there. I mean she was pretty thank you, Amy. I studied hard for that, stayed up until about nine.
Then thankfully we get the mom I screwed up. I'm sorry the phone call, Thank god, because I was over them, havn't Yeah, yeah, okay, Now the question to relieve They tied it up like quickly because yeah, would you deliver the letter? No to be complicit in that M kind of goes against well, I don't know. I mean, if Laurel I feels any kind of guilt that she overreacted, then yeah, right, she's gonna she's gonna deliver the letter.
I just think she shouldn't involve This is between her and Dean, and involving a third party is just adding to it. And it's an awkward position for Laurla Like I know, like she's like, I know that my daughter had sex with you and you're married, and I'm going to hand you this letter that I have no idea what it says inside, but here you go. How great was Dean in that scene? Though? Real good, real real good and anxiety? Yeah? Oh was he great? And I felt so bad for him. I agree with you. It
was his best scene ever. I think so too. He nailed that. I literally wrote good acting, good acting. I didn't realize he was this good. Just a kid and he's that good, you know. I feel like I might disagree with the whole would you like not giving the letter? I think if I was Laurel and knowing the tension, and I think Laurela has also reflected later being like, Okay, that was a big day for my daughter. Horrible circumstances, But I think she is trying to get back, you know,
in Rory's races or whatever. Yeah, and just get that mother daughter relationship back, and more importantly, Rory's trust back, because I think there's no trust right now. And so like, if I was Lorlie, I might have done it, and I think I would have done it. I would have done it, Yeah, you would, Amy, Yeah, I would have done it. I would have done it. I wouldn't have. I would have said, you made your bed laying it and you make your own best. I think Daniel's right.
She's trying so hard to sort of make amends with Rory, and I like how she's very clear, and I think that's where you know we need to different. This is where an example where there are no boundaries because that's something you ask a friend to do. Isn't it weird that A? Yeah, you're right. I agree. I think if I were late, I would do it. If I were Lorelai, I wouldn't. I just also think though her daughter is distraught, like her daughter's like, I'm sorry, Yeah, I screwed up
in Rome with her grandmother. I still think I would have done it. But I think you're right, Tar, Like, why didn't you just ask Lane? It would have been I've installed a red emergency button right to doctor Kim's office. Let's get her seriously. Yeah, I would. I wouldn't. I wouldn't have delivered it. But danko dumb dean like a fair one, oh one, do not leave the letter right like when you do leave it on the counter, just
open his coat pocket. I guess, Yeah, I don't know what he should have done with a letter disappearing ink, read it, tear it up. I don't know, because that is tape. This should you decide to accept this mission? Yeah? I heard her yesterday self destruct intensive one. I saw something on TikTok yesterday that floored me. Gail and Oprah you know my queen's Gail and Oprah. I love him so much. I'm Oprah is queen. Gail walked in on her husband cheating on her. She walked, she got home
early from wherever she was with the children. This is obviously many many years ago, in on her husband cheating on her with like one of their friends. Oh my god, she told Oprah the whole story. I think maybe when Oprah's on tour or something. I was, and I tell you those Hollywood people, those Hollywood people, wow, yeah yourself. I I mean, it brings an excellent point here, like darn barnyard out there. Yeah, which we'll get to the public shaming. So we'll get to that, because I don't
even know where I stand on that. So, oh god, there's so much Okay, So because if lie down, somebody's gonna jump on you, you know out there, careful, all right? So then we get back to the Renaissance Fair and we realize, like, oh, Luca and Lorla have been talking the whole time. They're so comfortable with each other. Lucas using his cell phone, yeah, and the only calls Lorelai.
It's that's yeah. So, Scott, what did you think of this scene where first you've got this great chemistry going with Lorelai and then the darling, most darling scene ever with Liz where you have that interaction and she's like, is it a dark haired girl with I don't know, it's it's it's just such another side of Luke. Do we want to see it like one hundred percent? I don't know. I don't want a million ses. Okay, it's up for the audience for me on what they like,
you know what I mean? So you you enjoyed that seeing that sunny, happy side of him. Yes, they think of something and this is not this is like something I want to say, But it's a little weird that I'm saying it to you, Scott. So you have to sort of do your best to be like an impartial judge. I'm going to really listen to you this time. You have really good chemistry with your scene partners, you know what I mean, Like with Lorelei, it's really great chemistry Liz,
really great brother sister chemistry. And then I think back about your you know, so many scenes with Kirk where you're the best bud, older brother figure z. Yes, is that something that you are good at creating with another actor or is it these particular actors? It was so sort of there really was great chemistry. I think it's one of two things, or it could be a little
bit of both. I think if as an actor, and here's a technical if you really listen to what they are saying, which is seems you know, intuitive, right, it seems of course you're going to do that, But a lot of people don't do that, right You be worried about your next line or something. They're thinking of their lines. They're not listening to your lines. So I always tried to do that. And the only way you can do that is being like completely off book and knowing your
lines cold so you don't have to worry. So really, it's just what I'm thinking about. I'm not thinking about anything. I'm just listening and trying to react what they're saying to me in real time and hitting my cues because because the cues are really super important. I mean, it really stands out in the scenes once we get you back to the diner with Lauren. But the interaction with
Liz was so cute. Really, I just I just find a way to vibe with people and you know, just make it as no I just want it to be as natural as possible. And and I love that she said you're not going to be alone, just like Suki said to such an interesting parallel. But I was going to say, I do think a lot of it has to do a dialogue too, Like they give you these words that like mean something and they're meaningful scenes. Yeah, yeah,
they're there. There's scenes and dialogue that allows you to kind of lay back and listen and just sort of be natural. You know. That's where the acting is for me. It's it's the listening. It's active listening. Yeah, So you know, to any actor out there listening to the podcast, that's
that's a big part of it. You know. It's it's really hearing what your scene partner saying to you, really listening to them and not worrying about pace so much, but just really listening and playing the truth of how you're feeling what's coming up for you in that in that moment. So so then we get that fabulous scene that we touched on with Dean and lower Lie with the letter I'm a messenger nothing more. He's who what? When? Where? Why? How? Who she with? What's going on? Why did she do
a la la la? Right? You just saw how distraught he was, so sad totally, and then he loves her and it's so he's so torn and this whole thing's a mess. And I think he's also like, like, is she trying to get away from me? He's like by being in Europe, Like, I think he's like thinking he did something wrong. Which also the ending scene, oh I thought Dean was a bit of a hoopoo head again,
so we'll get to that. But so then we get into the scene with Lane and Caesar and the Caesar salad, the Caesar's salad hilarious, And then here we have Aaron's Foster sot. So then we have Aaron Foster where she's like, you know, they're flirting with Zach and the whole thing, and then Lane has that fry meltdown and then Aaron Foster comes back. Aaron Foster played Cheryl and she says, we didn't know, Yeah, we didn't. Cool girl too, all
kinds of new angles. I thought, we're really we're married to that to new table too there, and then we get Lorelei and the coolest blazer I've ever seen, the white blazer with the orange orange so good, and holy cow, is Lindsay hucking the stuff out the window just watching? You know what? Good for her? You throw those clothes out the window so bad? Yeah, she was justified, right, and the whole Unfortunately she was the whole time. Sukie's like, oh my god, are you watching this? And Laura I
just know the better of her head. It was a great little scene that preamble before they saw that. We're a great little scene between those two. Yeah, totally totally right. They can never leave work aside too, but also come on invisible think the letters. Yeah, I don't know that. That seemed like a little bit of a leap for me too, that she was digging through the jacket. Well, then he wouldn't be more careful with something like that because if obviously, if he's got it in his jacket pocket,
he wants her to find it. So it's like kind of I think, So, you know, give me a break here. You know, who's going to be that careless with something exactly, you know, even though he you know, it's like, at least show some respect for your wife a little bit. Yeah, don't know, don't drag the letter into the house, right, yeah, clean up your clean it up? Yeah. Yeah. So the
mistake is kie. So then this was aggressive. So we go back and Rory gets home and she's in the kitchen and Emily, and we also find out that the the in his book to ninety percent capacity, the restaurants turning people away. So everything's going great. Suki's like gossiping about Dean to Rory and it's the whole hot mass so awkward, goodness, gracious right. I literally was like, su please please. The attempted hug that Laurel I tried to give her mother, Oh, I kind of missed that one.
Have you ever seen Laurel I try to hug Emily Jackie? Can you pull that up? I have to see that she was rebuffed. No, I have airplane all over me, you know, Oh yeah, I miss I'm so like Emily, Like the second I got off a plane. I need a shower, a shower. Yeah, but I mean, did you Laurels never attempted a hug with her mother. This would be the first attempt She hasn't had Luke, Rory or anyone for you know too. You can make up, but yeah, she's not going to hug her mother, is she? Here
we go, let's see, let's see Emily comes in. She's gonna waltz in. There we go, Here we go. Oh yeah, awkward. That was a hard yep. Uh. Maybe it's justified because she she was nice enough to take Rory. God. I love Kelly Bishop, love the beautiful lady too. She's so pretty. What an actress. What a talent, I mean, what a glorious talent, So that we do get the moment where then like, oh, Suki, you go do your thing or whatever,
because it's just like getting so awkward with the dean talk. Yeah, and then oh god in the town, this is lazy and lindsay that was both barrels that shotgun and then she reloaded and fired again. Wow, just kept going. That was gnarly. I mean, I thought I thought there was going to be a physical confrontation. I thought, daughter take the gloves off and start throwing hands man. You know, both the daughters were so quiet. Yeah, I like, sort of disheveled and yeah, what did you guys think? I
think that's I think you're right. I think that's where the scene should have gone, is between the two daughters or at least speak up a little bit, like if that was going to get out of that, if that could have gotten out of hand, that should have gotten out of hand. Yeah, I would have loved to seen that the girls talks, like right as you see, why is Lindsey shutting up there? You know, she's she's pissed,
She's she goes after Rory, right. I also think maybe a part of her new y she's always known, you know, like she's always known that Rory and Dean had a thing and Dean really loves her. I think like she had that gut feeling in them. Yeah, and we obviously know that she knew that there was stuff wrong in their relationship. So I think not that it's a relief that she knows, but she's like yeah, I know, you know, like I think she knew, but doesn't make it better,
but she you know. I think maybe that's why she kind of was just like, you know, arms crossed, like looking off to the side type thing, and her mom was just like furious, right, I like the Laura says, hey, pull back lady, like it was yeah right. Yeah. I think that Lindsay's mom was also like too involved. Yeah, but she always has been and she's presenting that side of herself that maybe caused a lot of problems between Dean and Lindsay. Totally totally. So there you have it, right,
you know. So, say you guys are in that same situation, would you have I don't know, kept on walking given the stink guy like, or would you have had that confrontation? What would you have done? Yeah? I would have walked by him be and like you suck, just kept walking. I would have said nothing, it's not confrontation. Is not my not my bag on something like that. Um, it's hard, it's tough. I don't really know what I do. I just wouldn't want my mom involved standing that seeking for me. Yeah,
I don't like that public display. Yeah, especially in that town. Yeah, in a small town, that is a big deal. Yeah. I mean, you know, as Patty probably heard as telling the whole town by now, I wouldn't have thrown the stuff out the window. Either I would have been very calm and said, back up, so is Lindsey from Stars Hollow or she from else? She isn't because they went to they went to school together. Like in the first or second Season's Bad, you know that somebody's gonna have
to move out of town. That's what I think. I bet you. Rory is like, can Yale please start getting out of it? Yeah. So in another great scene, we go to Luke's and the root beers on the house and he knows it. He's like, Rory looked pale, but he obviously hasn't gotten word of what just went down. And then in the Ultimate Parallel Universe, Oh, I have to run an errand, Oh I have to run an errand, just like Jess and Rory did. So at first, I was like, he's just nervous to be around her and
doesn't like can't can't handle himself. And like after we figured out where he went and Lorela I met up with him, I'm like, oh, you you're slick. You've planned that so good. And while there there we get the excitement of Lane saying you know, I'm in love with Zach occurring according to the Dirty Troll, up the necklace giving was so cute and then the band comes out and I I laughed so hardy And the fact that she was wearing the ear rings, you know, like the
matching piece, like she you know, he gave. He's like, I got this for you and and you know whatever, and then she just shows that she's wearing the earrings too, Like you can just tell, you can just tell the chemistry and the connection that the two of them have and that they're both so excited about it. Yeah, we
haven't seen Luke like that. Like Luke with an hole, he was just like constantly still grouchy, like uh you know, and like this he's just like thinking about her and wanting to court her and like and every of the perfect match, Perfect match, it's always so good. Definitely a different side of Luke. Oh so judge whether you like that side or not. Been waiting for it for four years. Yeah, adorable. Yeah, it was it weird now in season five to switch
like that. No, it was. It's nice because I get to do both now, so I can't you know, I can still be grumpy in the diner, but with her, I can I don't have to be grumpy anymore. Yeah, you know, I know this shit, it's another color to play. It's fun. You know. This was a job that was a lot of work, long hours. But was it just so much fun most of the time. Yeah, yeah, yeah, most of the time. It really was a lot of laughs.
Everybody laughed, you know. Then the one, the only scene that I thought didn't really go as I thought it would was Rory going over to Dean's. I thought he was really caustic and sort of coming at her when it was like, dude, bro, you did it. You were the married one, and here she is making sure you're hey and try to do the right thing by you. Yeah. He keeps laying his heart out for her, and she keeps dropping bombs on the guy, and then she sends
him a letter that she didn't even deliver. It didn't have enough respect for him to sit down and talk to him. When she got back, I agree and have a heart to heart and treat him like, you know, she really loves and respects him. But I gotta I gotta pull away from this. I mean, but I think that's the cowards way out. The letter said it was really special. It meant so much to care. What what's the butt though, she said, but I'm removing myself from
the situation. Yeah. And here's the thing, he said it she dumped him before, and I think he finally thought maybe he was getting her back, and then another dump you know again? Guys, Right, guys, what married? She is taking the high road, She's going I love you, she basically is saying in the letter, like this was so special to me. I have feelings for you, but you're married, and I will take myself out of the equation and
not make this. You did the damage already, Like I don't know what to tell you, but you you literally screwed. There is no marriage anymore. You screwed it up like there wasn't before. But she's saying, she's basically said, you work it out. And if I think she's saying, if you end up getting separated, divorced, we can talk. I need the transcript of the letter. We need a forensic investigation on this letter, because I just think a letter. I think she did the right thing. It's not appropriate.
Did she do the right thing by taking herself out, Yes, but she should have never put herself in to begin with. Yeah, well, Abby, but he's the one that's married. But she helped wreck the marriage in person, in bed with him, face to face, wrecked the marriage. She could pull away and do it face to face. Just don't hit it. He was the married guy. He was the one playing video games. He was the one who didn't you know it was kind of barking at Lindsay all the time. He is the
one who went and pursued Rory. Guys, I love Dean, but this is on Dean. And so for Dean to come to the door and be all Rory, he should have been like, I'm so sorry. I messed up so many things and hurt so many different people. I'm gonna go straight to the therapist for six months and I will call you. Dean. I give what you're saying. I do actually totally understand that. I do. There's definitely an
argument to be mate. Yeah, and I think everyone I think everyone's right here though, Like, if I'm being honest, like I do think everyone's right. He walked like a penguin. It was great, but I don't when I watched it.
When I watched it, I didn't like it. But like after thinking about it, I'm like, all right, I like do understand why he's so hurt, like he I feel like he's lashing out out of being hurt because he did have the cookie cutter marriage that he thought he wanted back in the day, and now that's just completely squashed and the love of his life is now just taking herself out of the equipment. I think, I think maybe, you know, I don't know. I don't know if this
is a conscious choice. It probably is. I have no idea, But I mean, you have a main character that's beloved, right, and now she's done something and she's getting a lot of backlash for this, and she she's like gonna be The town is gonna be. Yeah, it loves their rory but right, but I mean their limits right to be. That's a big deal. Yeah, anytime, but especially in a small town, right, you don't want to be that that reverberates,
that's reputational. That's just she destroyed her reputation in that town. Yeah, so it's a big deal. And she she's getting a lot of backlash for a reason. It's because she should and now she's getting it. She's getting it from Lindsay, she's getting it from Dean all these people. Yeah, you know, and it's uh, but that was a little extra harsh of Dean, who's very complicit in this, if not more so. Yeah, does anyone have the symbolism of those balloons going by?
Wasn't that beautiful? Favorite shot? That's the balloons that Rory acidentally knocked. I mean, sorry that Laura, Laura I knocked. Yeah. Yeah, all I can thinking about was it the red balloon? Me too? Like she's literally in front of the house of represent an opportunity that was lost for a kiss, and then she bumped in and then she sent the balloons to Rory to think about the lost the opportunity. We need the people, Yeah, we need the people to
weigh in. Yeah, what is the symbolism of that? That's interesting? It was a beautiful shot. It was my favorite shot of the whole thing. You know, the last episode they had Richard coming into the door lighting his cigars. Oh yeah, I mean it's there's some beautiful, sweeping shots that you love that with the cigar to television. That's foreign film,
high level foreign film stuff. It's just beautiful stuff. So I don't know if this is one hundred percent true, but I just found something that said, um, the red balloons are simply helping set a timetable for events and tie them together. Oh that it's all happening at the same time. Kind yeah, so then you sort of think that it's over the episode. But you have this other scene where we see, like Danielle said, the Gilmore girls
back together. They've got all their snacks. Oh, so many snacks. Steaks, also pizza. The combination plane or snacks makes me gag Like branch dressing, for sure, They've always got chips and pizza and steak, sauce and Chinese. But it's just like, oh god, it's just yeah, I mean it's like, now Rory is low in the relationship terms, Laurelize ultra high in relationship turns. It's you know, their shoes. On the other front, they're going to watch Show Girls and it's
they're sanctuary but the greatest film of all time. But yeah, yeah, these are powerful episodes. I mean just they really are wash over you. And they're just such a joy to watch. They're so funny, they're so detailed, they're so poignant, they're so dramatic. One thing I will say is I'm excited for Luke and Lorelei to be the focus because I feel like I don't know Dean and Rory and Lindsay situation at least for me, has been like clouding everything.
Like I'm just so fixated on that and I'm excited, and we've seen bits of Luke and Lorelie, but I'm ready for them to go all in, you know what I mean, Like, I'm ready for that one they're Danielle, Yeah, I mean I for me, it's ten out of ten? Yeah, how many? But what what measuring stick are you applied? Oh? Ten out of ten, steak, four eyes, nine, nine point five out of ten, red balloons, loof balloons or just red bullonsinnin loof balloons, char I was gonna use both
of those. I'm trying a nine out of ten. Necklaces his necklaces you just snuck into mine. There weren't that many items in this episode. I mean I was gonna say the letter, that'd be kind of h That's good. Uh. I'm gonna deduct for the you know, the the long jump that we were required to do to get to the lane love thing. Um, so I'm gonna I'm not going to deduct a lot though. I think I'm gonna do a nine point seven five or okay, um uh
TJ grabbing his drink. Oh yeah, because I just I just out of ten tjs and I want that guy in every scene every episode. Sorry, Hey, what's next week's called? And I think there's a world where TJ and Kirk co existed. It could be glorious and I want to see it. Yes, all right, everybody, So that's way next week? It's next week? Written in the stars, is the greatest moment of my life? Do we meet not Zukery next week? I don't know, but I don't want to know, and
I don't want you to tell me. But the one thing I do I will not tell you. The one thing I do want you to know is that I'm going to be in Louisville the Louisville Pop Con June sixteen through eighteen. So I'll be in Louisville, Kentucky and meeting fans and it'll be wonderful. And I have another announcement to make, but it's not quite announceable yet. Oh oh, that's a tease, tea.
