I am all in that. I am all in with Scott Patterson and I heart radio podcast. How's everybody doing? So we're ready to Are we ready to go? Because I like this episode. You know what, guys, I liked it too, and I liked it a lot, and I think John Stevens wrote one heck of a script and NeiMa directed the hell out of it, and it was just I want to see it again. Wait, was this Adam Nimoy back again? No, Nonnima Barnett directed this, and I just thought it was as good as it gets
for this show. Yeah, I felt very Gilmoury to me. It was just firing on all cylinders that Joe. Everything worked, it was great. Everything was great. And I will say Lauren Graham looked fantastic in this episode. No, no, you talk about the fashion, but I kept noticing the fashion and I'm like, oh my god. I mean the dress and the leather jacket were a knockout. But yeah, what do you call that? What do you call argyle? That argyle? Sweater sleeves, like the like the sweater vest. I'm literally
so happy you're mentioning this. But she looked fantastic. I thought the wardrobe and not that she never she always does. Right, you are a thousand percent correct. I was fully taken up a notch even I noticed this Tracy Lords, which will get to her turquoise necklace amazing, and then Suki had these turquoise earrings. So I don't know what was going on with the wardrobe. Looralized fashion was so epic that write. The dress was amazing, her hair was amazing,
her face was amazing. The gold necklace with the little circle that I love back again. I mean I'm into Rory's hair, the whole thing. Yeah, I mean everything everything about it worked anyway, So let's um, I think I'm hearing a big sigh of relief. Well, yeah, I think the people will be happy. I was really needing a great episode. I really wanted a great episode. It's it's traumatizing not to like an episode. It's it is it's I don't like not liking it, you know, I want
to love it because I love the show. I really do overall. Um, I mean, my just on on that. It's like even when you when you don't like it, it's still better than most episodes of television. Oh, no question, no questions, Like even the worst ones are better than like half the other shows we watched three quarters all right, So who's gonna synopsize? I think Danielle is on the road, right,
she's traveling on the East coast. Yes. Oh, speaking of being on the road, I will be appearing at the Rhode Island Comic Con okay uh November four through six in Providence at the Rhode Island Convention Center. And I think they're called the Duncan Donuts. The biggest little state in the Union, the biggest, the biggest, the biggest event in the smallest state. Uh. And so that's Rhode and Comic Con. Come on by. I'll be there all weekend
November four or six. Can't wait. It's my only appearance in the United States in the fall winter season at one of these conventions. I don't think you better. One of our one of our podcast hosts from The Bachelor, Ashley I Connetti Um, owns a coffee shop in Rhode Island. It's called Audrey's. You should stop by get out of town. How long does it take to get from the end of Rhode Island to another Like it couldn't be more than an hour? Right? Well, if she's improvid. She in Providence.
I don't know, Tara, what town is it in? I don't know, We don't know. But it's the smallest it's it's literally the smallest state. How how far could anything be? Sure? Should I road trip it to her? If I can do it, I'll do it. I'll do it. Yeah, Yeah, we'll find out by the end of the show. We'll find out. All right, cool anyway, Tara synopsize away? Please all right? This is season four, episode five, The Fundamental
Things Apply. This aired on October two thousand three. Rory goes on a date but realizes she doesn't know how to date. Luke is annoyed at Laura la because she's doing all her work at the diner and is upset about baseball tickets, so Loria I invites him over for movie night. Meanwhile, she has a dilemma with an interior designer they've hired for the Dragonfly in God it's so good.
So it starts out with a bearing with the bulbs right bad, gives laurea lay some ball albs and gets her into gardening as a way to fulfill her empty nest syndrome. And it was really hysterical. Rory comes back and they squeal and they scream because the bulb got on her and made her. And we also immediately know it's Halloween because the town is looking good, which is like perfect timing because Halloween is here. Unbelievable. I was like, this felt really like great timing. We're right on track.
How did we do claimed it? So it was a really cute opening scene. Yeah, this opening scene was for me what I love compared to the yelling of the alarm. But we won't mention the episode that I'll take the bulbs over the alarm any day as well. But it was a really cute scene. It was nice to see them together and it was laughing and squealing and acting like kids and being grossed out by things. And the bat was epically Sally's draw. There's sighting, uh, and she
always delivers the best of the best comedy. Uh, coming out of your yingang. I love that. I know I'm getting ahead of the best lines. But she says color coming out of your yinging? And did you hear Rory saying maybe you'll get a man right right? I think I missed that. Oh my god, it was so good. But that's good because that that's the theme of you know, it's kind of the theme of the episode. Right, it's
like trying to get a dude. Um. And when I wasn't I wasn't mad when we went back to Yale, No, no, no, I thought Yale was wonderful stuff because they established uh Janet's character, they established ton a little more. We go into the dining hall and there's other people, characters, and it's it's you know, she meets all the other you know,
what's his face, what's his name? The naked with Marty, Marty, Marty's friend is in the whole thing, and yeah, it's like I felt like I was at a real place and here we get to see the inside and it was it was just alway. I actually wrote a note, I'm happy to be back at school, right, yeah, right, noticed this is the second time Marty's mentioned his brother. Oh yeah, yeah, I just I was like, why are we talking about his brother? Because maybe I forgot do
we know who his brother is? Yeah? She Marty mentioned his older brother. Um, the piece of chicken that he he would get the bigger pieces of chicken, right, so he would actually never get he would never get the good pieces right, and he mentioned the brother when he was naked, like this is more embarrassing than anything my brother has ever done, or something like yeah. So in that moment, I was like, do we ever see Marty's
brother because it was just twice in a row. Do we know that the brother goes to Yale or no? I don't know. I don't know. It's forty minutes from Providence. It's the coffee up is forty minutes from Providence. That's like nothing. We're on a tight schedule. We're we're in a really tight schedule. It's super tight. All Right, you can go next time you're in Rhoda. All right, thanks, appreciate that. Um so what did you think of going to the cafeteria? First of all, I love that she's like,
breakfast ends in five minutes. Well, I like, you know, Paris enters the scene screaming and it's it's jarring and it should be because Rory's supposed to be asleep. And then she comes in screaming and wakes her up and you didn't wake me up, and she missed the waffle waffle bar day and the whole thing, and you know, it's full bar day and nothing I mean, she's just like that was happy that it wasn't like you dropped my alarm I'm late for class, because that would have
been like the fact. Once I realized, oh, she doesn't want to miss the end of breakfast, it became much more enjoyable and funny to me. Food is so important to the Gilmore family. So right, uh so now we're so now we're in the commissary and we do she meets the breakfast crew, which I don't know why she didn't just sit down with them. I was a little bombed. I'm like, those dudes are fun and cute. She was embarrassed.
I guess, well, I also don't think i'd want to sit down in my robe and pajamas with a group of guys right with their bunny slippers. I'd rather I'd rather just like crawling in a hole and no one noticed me, like if I was, and she was just gonna jump in, and Marty was being sort of nice. I don't know, I wonted her to like join in a bit more. Yeah, but like her and Marty are in a different level like that, you know, like she's seen him naked already. I think Marty sees it as
maybe a potential dating situation, and she doesn't. Right, do you think maybe that's a dynamic there? Maybe that's what I yeah, I mean, or or I don't know, or something sort of like off with them still, But I was like, the breakfast crew looks cute, and first of all, they all seemed kind of recognizable to me. I'm like, are all these dudes famous? And then uh, it seems fun eat their eggs or whatever. Yeah, but you eat
their eggs. She looks kind of crappy in college. You don't want to sit down with a bunch of dudes, I mean casual breakfast. Yeah, but that's Rory. She's you know, she's naturally shown kind of set up like the whole episode too, like, you know, get yourself out there. Definitely m hm m h m. All right, and then where do we go next to the diner? So now we see Lorelai who's turned the diner into her office. Janes there's cook Janes kind of busting at the scenes and
we don't know why. Um so she's on her cell phone. He runs her out of there, and the funny part of it is she does the entire phone call on the way out never gets out the door. The phone call ends at the door, she comes back in. Did you please tell me you guys noticed that the background actor with the burger though, no, you got okay, anybody listening to me a favor, go right back to this scene and we will do it for you too. On Instagram. You gotta zoom in on the dude with the burger.
I mean, he was almost like heat because of the way the camera was. It was more him than you guys, and burger just gigantic. And then he you can tell he doesn't want to take a bike because it'll wreck the like continuity, so he's sort of tapping it. You guys, somebody's got to pull up the scene. You must put it on Instagram because I know they're trying to get the scene. I'm gonna I'm gonna watch this episode later. Anyhow could anyone miss it? I don't know. I did.
I didn't. I didn't see it because we're not supposed to notice it. So you must have been like in the action with luc Lorelei and I just was like, what's going on with that dude? Well, I couldn't take my eyes off of her. You know, he taps it almost and then he's trying to talk fake talk to the person acrossroom him. You guys, it was an epic background actress actor moment. Oh, oh it's happening. Here we go,
it's right there. Did you see that the burger? Watch watch the burger in the back hold on, so look at his burger comes up, whole burger. But he knows I can't take a bite of this. How to do something on the see is it? Is it a fake burger? No? No, those are real burgers. He tapped it. What's who doesn't do a burger tap? That's like everybody listening. When he was holding the burger and he took a drink of his soda, never said never, he didn't take the burger.
He but he took it. He was holding the burg with both and now and now he's like flailing it around in the background for the rest of the scene, like he's talking with the burger. I'm eating a burger and wait for it. Now it's going to come up again. Yeah, he's never taking a bite that. That's the same dude. Yeah, he's he's a burger waiver. It's a pretty big it's a pretty big burger. Burger waver. He's not a burger eater. Look, then the girl left him. She went to get the mustard.
There's so much action, and now he doesn't have the burger. I think it's down, and he's wife rubbing his hands a lot of mustard. Oh my god, now he's putting O. Wait, now the girl's gone, is she? There is so much action happening with that couple. I can't get enough. Oh, Bravo, bravo. Background nice All right? Well, uh, anyway, who knew there was far more interesting stuff happening behind It's Michelle's cheap days and uh, funny moment to take him somewhere else,
get him out of here. He wanted he wanted to know the ingredients of the chocolate, the chocolate. But I also loved this. You're right, Scott. This episode had such good writing because I love when he goes oh, I love doing research for the sake of doing research, because he's done all his work for her, and she's like, oh, I found somebody. I was even like, yeah, important question for you, Scott. Are you feeling better about phone calls?
Because in this episode there were two, at least two amazingly perfect phone calls one right here where Emily calls, and then later on during the date, I mean, come on that phone call. They they work, They work beautifully. The phone calls work beautiful because there's so much going on in person that the phone calls provide a kind of a welcome sad drama. But then you're like, oh, are they going to get back to the scene after the phone call and continue that banter? So yes, it
all worked. It was the perfect use of phone calls, Yes, because it kind of gave you like almost a breather and everything that's happening that you're like, okay, yeah, I actually wish some of these scenes were longer. There were scenes in this episode where I'm like, oh, wait, what we're moving on already at more? Yeah, exactly as I felt the same way. It was really fast paced, really great. They just packed so much stuff into every scene. All the great line that Lorelai should be rs V ping
for Friday night dinner. I do, yeah, I mean, I mean I don't know. My My take on it was like really just needs to like let it go, you know what I mean, Like, like it is what it is, it's Frida night dinner, it's you it's your parents house. It's not like you know, if you can't make it, that's fine, just call her. I mean she already didn't. I could throw on a couple of extra lamb shops. Come on, they have plenty of food at that house. Yeah, I mean they're not making it there, sure right? What
did you guys think Emily with the ponytail? I like it? Yeah, I liked everything about it. Really, boy, Emily, what an episode for her? Yeah? Boy, she really took it in the shorts, didn't. We will get to it. But the other thing that I thought was so relatable, especially today, this was almost like a premonition, you know, when you're on the phone with someone and they're reading something, because she's like, are you reading while talking? And I was
literally like most relatable thing ever. These days, everyone's trying to talk on the phone and text at the same time and they're not responding to you, and you know, there's like a there's like a huh, you know what I mean? What did you wait? What did you say? What you say? Say it again. I've definitely done that. I might have been caught doing that by Scott um
last pop culture, you do it a lot. I forgive me though, because I know you've got you know, you're so busy, you know you've got a million balls in here, So I don't don't, I don't bust your chops about it. Uh So, now we go back to Yale, which I was again happy about, and that guy was a cutie that tried to ask her out, do you eat the Trevor? The Trevor? Yeah, he was very awkward, but I guess I guess he was an appealing young man, wasn't he? Yes, I wrote Rory W t F Like she was so
not picking up what he was putting down. Well, why, I don't know. Maybe, I mean, look at who she's dated, Dean and then Jess. I mean, now she's it's a whole different breed of cat over there, which in in the next scene, lore I does say you didn't date them, you were in a relationship with them. Yeah, right, I don't know that she's ever actually been like asked on a date, but she dated them in the beginning. I mean, it wasn't a full blow really well, not Jess, Well,
she dated Dean, it was. It wasn't a full blown relationship right away, wasn't. No, that's right, it was sort of remember that he was over for the move blurty. Yeah, I mean what a date with LORELEI? Right, yeah, I would say my only criticism, buckle up, everybody, was it was a little too fast and frenetic for me with Lane.
Oh thanks for the pizza actually, but that okay. But that actually worked because she, you know, she had to do her little version of a speed date friendship date with Rory and get the heck back because you know, the ochra was drying out or something. And I did think it was a funny reference that Mrs Kim has been doing a lot of internet ordering. Respect Mrs Kim. I'm all about the Internet myself, right, So yeah, I just could have used a little bit more late. I
liked what we got. I liked what we got. She was she was, She was just perfect pitch. I thought, you know, I had a couple of bites since she was out of there, bye, you know, how do you feel about the war that is brewing between Janet and paris Us. I thought that was great and I thought that Janet really uh stood up for herself and held her own and I was like, oh, yeah, that's our girl. Man. We just interviewed her. She's she's gonna like put a
thumping on old Paris, like she better watch out. You know. She just said, you know, I I am, after all, on partial scholarship. You know, don't embellish with all the balls I have. There's one ball, you know, right right right right? Um? So yeah, I like that dynamic. I want to see more of that because that's good conflict between those and all right, I enjoy everything with Tana too. Okay,
So I jumped a tin of it ahead. So this is where lore La addresses to Rory, like you saw Marty and she says he's sweet, and she's like, does he have a bad but like any guys on the horizon, notpe. So they're sort of having this conversation about boys and he's preppy. And remember she judges him for carrying the bottle of water. Not Marty, but the other guy she carrying a bottle of water. She says he carries She says, um, he's decent to look at, but he carries a bottle
of water around. It's weird. Now everyone cares. Now Rory says that right, sah, no, you can't do that hydration? Yeah, bad, right, She says that about Trevor right, because she tells her mom, Now it's like such a thing with like the Stanley, the Stanley cups and like the hydro flask. Oh my god. I saw this TikTok where this woman is talking about growing up in the eighties and she's like, we never had water, like never, and we didn't die, Like we totally live by the way. I literally have a I
have one next to meet. But now that we know how important being hydrated is, you know, it's like we've adapted as a species to but especially in colleges now, like I feel like everyone does carry around like a hydroflask totally. Yeah, as maybe the water supply in each city and town, like no one really has plastic bottles. Now, we'd have a weird tangent. When you were on Gilmour Girls, was there something that like you loved to have in your dressing room? Like that was your what's your number
one thing that you like? You know how most celebrities have like a fruit platter and peria or whatever, Like what's what was your thing? I mean they would stock their refrigerator with with water, and uh, I liked orange juice and apple juice and cranberry juice, juices. You're a juice man. A lot of a lot of sugar in that their carrot juice. Oh no, that's good for you.
That's good. Did you ever take I guess character could take a sip of something pretty easily in the diner, drink a little drink or that's not I never, I don't remember drinking anything in the dinner. Let's do busy working. Yes, it was in between takes. You take your little steps. Um, all right, let's see here. But I love the fact that they introduced uh and I we're going back to Trevor. But I love the fact that they're discussing Hemingway and
they're they're discussing uh. I guess that's for whom the bell tolls. That all went over my head. There was a few things in this so went over my head, even that, Um yeah, in that class, that professor's talking and it was like to me, I was like, I don't know that, did you. I didn't know what that guy was talking about. The teacher, the professor. It was. It was a good discussion of the novel, the basic themes of the novel. Um. Anyway, So wait, sidebar really quick.
Is one of the Breakfast Crew named Sugarman. When you texted that last night, I was like, I no idea what that? Okay, So there's an actor in this episode named Adam Shapiro, and obviously I already hit him up. He's coming on with us. His character is named Sugarman. And for anyone, I'm not making it about me, save your letters, but my last name Sugarman. So we got to talk to that dude. But I can't figure out who he is. He must have been in the Breakfast crew.
M hmm, we'll find out. You think Amy Palladino is giving a nod to you in the future. I was, first of all, wait, another funny line though there's like a thousand there's thousands of because she says, you're you know, something about like I'm not the world's best dater, but I do it, and then like Rory storms off and she's all, did I win? Everything is so good? Yeah, it's it's really good. So Scott, do you remember? So now we meet Natalie Zimmer in her beautiful, perfect turquoise
necklace is lovely. Immediately I was like, she's lovely and beautiful. I know her who is that? Well, you know, that's Tracy Lords. I did my I was on the verge of going back to New York my first trip out here to l A, because I was broke and I had worn out my welcome on several people's couches. Right, So I was going to head back to New York because things weren't working out for me here. And I
got a film, uh, playing Tracy Lord's husband. Yes, called Intend to Kill like a PM entertainment straight later work. Not her early work, no, right, right, right, right now. It was legit acting work. It had nothing to do with you know, her former career, right, no judgments, but for people listening, Tracy Lords became very famous for her work in the adult film film industry, right and and then she ended up working with John waters On on
some of his films. And turns out she's a really strong actress, you know, and really by yeah and cry Baby and the whole thing and so um so. Anyway, so she was I think producing that film and sort of had the decision and she hired me to play her husband. When so were you happy to see her? Did you guys get to see each other? Oh? I I had no idea. She was cast and when I saw I was like, oh my god, how you doing? It? Had been it had been a minute, you know, it's
been ten years at least. You actresses who worked in adult films, who really was able to cross over and do like mainstream acting. And she's excellent in this episode and lovely. She took control of her life. She took her control back and she you know, executed her game plan and she's doing very very well. So good for her. Yeah. So I thought she was perfectly cast as Natalie Zimmer and I thought she was adorable. And that's where we get Now we get the argyle sweater and the black
skirt and the leather jacket. Did we get it that soon? Oh? Yes we do. Yeah, yeah she doesn't. We don't get the leather jacket quite yet, but we get the argyle sweater and the black skirt because she then walks through town and we see Suki pregnant, really pregnant, right right right? Right? Um, yeah, that's scene about the Jackson Jackson naming the baby Colgate. I actually needed to rewind this. I was so confused. Did she not say the baby's name is Davy? Davy?
It was Davy. Yes, but because but Jackson doesn't know. He doesn't want to know, so she's just naming the baby. Well, they agreed if it's a boy, and she wasn't letting on that she that she knew, right, I mean she, I mean, he knows that she knows, so, but she didn't want to him herself into just a boy name because then that would give away that she knew what the sex of the baby was, because it weren't they in this together, like they like, I don't want to know,
and she doesn't know. She's paying like she doesn't know too. Write The part that I just was missing, and I was like, do I need to rewind? This? Was that she named the baby Davy. But wouldn't you wait? Okay? So my head was like, wait, why are they just not waiting? She she told that to Laurel. She didn't tell that to Jackson. Now I get it. I'm so dumb. And she said, no, no, it's not it's it was yeah, but she said, if it's a girl, we're naming her
cold Gate. If it's a boy, let's do Davy, you know, And she knows it's a boy. So she told Laura, we're going to name it. It's Davy because he agreed to that. I just realized I'm a complete idiot that I didn't get that. They said, if it's a boy, this, If it's a girl, so she knows, right, Oh my god, Cold Gate, what kind of a name is your girl? I was today years old when I realized, do you worry much? I mean, you only work like eighteen hours
a day, right, is that it? Of course, if it's a boy, this, if it's a girl this, and she knows it's a boy. Oh my god, Hello, meet meet Colgate Douglas. Colgate, Colgate Douglas would be her name. It was a girl, because it's Jackson Douglas or Colgate St. James, Colgate St. James Douglas. I like Davy. What her name? Davy Douglas, Davy St. James. It works, It all works, Cyber. The town looks amazing the way they do that. It's just yeah, I actually noticed that too. It's really pretty.
It was. It was a nice place to work, and we would often sit in the gazebo and relax and on on cooler days. Right, that's so nice. Yeah, And then we we we got good use out of that gazebo just for saying Suki's hair looked amazing. Relies hair looked amazing. Everybody looked so good in this episode. Just a quick note on hair. Um. I don't know if this is actually true. Someone someone said that in the last episode when Rory cut her hair, she might have
been filming sister heard of the traveling pants. I saw that, but I thought she looked good in this episode. I really liked that she looked totally down with the short hair because it makes her more collegiate. Like I feel like, Okay, that was the high school Rory and now we've got college. Yeah. Yeah, I feel like by the way, I feel like a lot of girls do that, like they want something fresh, they just chop it all off. So it made sense. We saw lor I put the glasses on again in
this episode, so cute. It really went with the sweater vest totally like I don't want to get kind of weird Britney spears in this, but like the fact that she had like the glasses and the argyle, but then the short skirt. I was like, oh, this is so cute. Maybe one more time, So okay, so we know now I think I can't exactly remember exactly where, But we also know that Rory has that scene with Trevor where she you know, oh I could be hungry, you know, gets him to ask her out like, oh you know
what I do I eat? Like m h very funny, and then and then when he comes around, her last line is, um, you're so persistent. Was very clever. Then we realized that lor los everybody four thousand dollars and that Luke has taken her messages, which was totally amusing from yeah, yeah, he was a bit edgy, wasn't He hadn't he yelled at poor head? And then we find out why snapping at everybody snapping coming here again? Yeah, man, just kind of it was kind of fun. Oh that's
not gonna you know. You know what I appreciate about it, though, even though you kind of grading mcgrast, is that we're not just pretending like the Nicole thing was Nicole, right, Yeah, it was a cool We're not just pretending that that damaged. Like the thing I like about Gilmore is that they're actually saying, Okay, they're acknowledging it, you're bummed about it. Still, we didn't just make it disappear, right, This is how human beings feel, right, even though they're in the setting.
You know, there's got to be like an ouch factor here. He's and he's only he's a little he's going through those stages, right, So he's in one of his he's in the angry stage. And nothing's more luke like than not wanting to plan. And I that tracks, you know, and we get it like it hurts you planned and it burned you and your feelings are hurt right right? Um? Yeah, I really want to resist commenting on the character so much. You guys, comment on the character what you're We want
to know you are him. We want to hear what you have to say. You can take some mean bleep on Instagram. You know. At first, no, no, no, it's not that, it's it's you know, at first, I thought, oh god, you know, he's it's a little too snappy. It's a little too it's like too much anger at her. And it's not like that's not funny. But why did I laugh that? You know, I thought it was funny.
I thought it was just it was in character for little I thought, so, okay, I agree, I agree because because I got judge with myself and I go, oh, jeez, you now you're going after Laurelai the way you came but known as a grump. So it wasn't like, you know, she keeps up with you could show and then she says Benji and she says lastie. And then the thing
I like is you tell her what's really going on. Yeah, that's a relationship like you're allowed to be like because then you say, here's what's going on and then she says, you know what, come over for a movie. They are really good friends. Yeah, it was nice. It was a nice scene. It was really nice when it got to that point. Did anyone else think that Luke totally thought it was a date in lore Lae, I was just inviting him over. No. I think they both were totally
on the same page on what it was. Well, what do you think it was? What do you think it was a friend date? Like each other that aren't ready to tell each other. No, I not right, But I think they both were aware that here's an opportunity to go on a date without having to admit that's what
I'm exactly right. And I think they were both happy, really happy about it because it wasn't awkward or weird or exactly just organically came up and it was like, yes, yeah, I just think that Luke thought of it a little bit more than Laura I did. But that was, you know why rewind it to the scene where she looks
at him. There's a couple of looks and she looks at him in the perfect way like at the house, yep, and she looks especially I think when he's asleep, but there might have been one other and she looks at him like you but I mean, I mean at the diner when she invited. I think right off the bat, Luke thought of it more than Laura I did. Okay, you could be right, because I also respected that he
said okay. I just think he's not because he could have said like, oh no, you don't have to have me over, but he just immediately says, okay, yeah, let's do that. I don't know, I think maybe you're right, but it's close. I was just I mean, I was just thinking about I don't think he was going to allow himself to go there mentally that this was a date, but it was an opportunity to get inside the house.
Since spent some time with somebody obviously is very fine, and they haven't had one on one time and like a long time, so he's definitely not dreading it. We know that that's true, and she's not courtesy inviting him or pity inviting him annuinely is like I want you to come over. They're both excited. They're like, oh, that's cool, perfect. So what so what give me a percentage of like for Laurel eye she being a buddy a pal or she being like, hey, maybe this will turn into something.
What percentage buddy? What percentage? I think it's like for me, I think it's like sixty potential buddy. But the thing that yeah, but because the reason is is that she was like, well, Rory and I usually do moving that, but she's not here, So do you want to come? So it felt a little like, well, you know, I'm missing out on someone else? Do you want to fill their spot? That's why I thought it like two friends
who somewhere somewhere they have crushes. Yeah, and so it's like, Okay, would you rather watch a movie with a friend that you sort of have a crush on or a friend that's you don't have a crush on friend you have the crush on. So I feel like they're both like, well, this is yeah, Loral, I just I'm not gonna lie to you. Loral sometimes just bugs me in the sense of like she never gets to the point, like she
always like the beats around the bush. So I'm like, but I think that's why I always think like she's taking like a step back when she takes a step forward. M I felt like, that's just that's just me. I felt like this was like pretty cool, like it was. She's like, hey, she knew he was bummed because he's bummed about this Yankees tickets thing with Nicole. So she's like, hey, why don't you come over, which is super nice, And I love that he said okay, and they didn't irritate
me with it. She said it, he said yes, they have the funny banter about the movie, and off we go. And then I also, well, I'm jumping ahead. I'm sorry. I mean, I think we're past the diner scene now, okay, So we'll go in order rather than jump right to the date. Now we've got And I do want to comment on the writing from the beginning of the show.
I think the most interesting and best device that they ever came up with for that character, for that Luke character is to be annoyed by her all the time. It's so, that's true. That's true, And it just says that he's resisting her so much in a way just on the surface, when you know underneath he's dying inside. So I I think that's very powerful. I think you're right. And I say, the reason I love it is because they're both authentically themselves with each other. And okay, so
we will skip to the date. So even when they're on the couch, he's not kissing her asked or like, he's like like basically rolling his eyes and her rules and he's not even following them. And he I mean, let's talk about him answering the phone her. Yeah, you answer the I mean, first of all, God, there's so many the date. It's just like we could do an hour on the date. It was amazing. They're so comfortable, they're so hilarious shifting and he's like basically like I'll shift,
you know. Then Rory calls, and of course I love that Luke is totally in it. He gives the advice and they take it. Yeah, it's so genius. Then you answer, and it's Mrs Gilmore and like, hey, Mrs Gilmore, it's Luke. Like I was just like, oh right, the plot thickens. That was the best scene in the whole episode. That was the best scene because it so includes in that I include Rory's awkward date and Emily calling. The whole thing is really one scene and out of ten m
that was great. Yeah. They're they're really good together, aren't they. Those two characters, they just really are fun to watch, you know, really fun to watch. Um. Yeah, there's something about them that you you really get a crush on both of them, Like, I really like these people. But there was a point there in that scene where they're looking at each other and I thought they were about to kiss. I didn't get a kiss moment. I just
I know, I thought they were. I thought that there was a post there was a moment there where they just I don't know, it just felt right like if he had just made a move and kissed her or something, or if she made a sudden moved to kiss him, it wouldn't have been crazy. No, not at all. But it's so cute how they are. They're like an old married cup They really are. It's really And then and then the fact that, like she tucks him in and he falls. First of all, he's comfortable enough to fall
asleep there. That doesn't happen when you're not comfortable. And she's comfortable to have him sleep there, and Rory is she's not thinking anything. Do you know what I'm saying. It's like it's all just so normal. And what do you think the significance of watching Casablanca was a good question. I don't know, but you don't you know what I mean. I mean, let's let's think about it. What was that about?
It was about? You know, I've never seen it, so, but are those two ingrid Bergman and what's the guest name? Are they like unrequited love? And then they finally get together kind of that and then they break apart again. I think, oh no, what do they end together? What happens in the end? I mean they I think everybody has to escape and get out of there because the Nazis are coming in. They flooded into Casa Blanket. They have to get the heck out of there. Here's looking
at you, kid. Uh Now, It's like, I think, one day we're going to be really good friends. This is the beginning of a really beautiful friendship with the with the guy. Yeah yeah, yeah, yeah, that's the one with the chief, not the chief of police, but the general, the French generals. Yeah yeah, So I think I think there's there's a relations since we know that Casa Blanca so well. I mean, of course we're trying it in beautifully.
I think there's something there, you know, this unrequited part. Yeah, absolutely, yeah, we'll take more into this. But let's reverse to Friday night dinner when Laura La gets there early, and that was like a lot of interaction Laura La and the maid and then Laura La goes back out of the car. By the way, I really felt that, like he you know, when you're like going with someone and you're like, I'm just gonna wait in my car and totally show up to walk it like I've totally been there. I mean
it's different, like she should have gone. It was her mom, her parents house, But say, sometimes I want to hide in my car for days. Let me tell you my favorite thing about that whole scene. But that was a funny scene shadow dancing. Oh, I mean I got a great scene and the entrance was great. See this shows how great a comedic actress Lauren is right with the cup here tucked in her neck and then dropping down and then holding onto the the purse handle thing. Oh,
she's the Roy's not here. Well maybe I'll just oh. And that's when she's wearing the dress, which which dress? That purplely pattern dress. She still she still has the leather jacket on right, Yes, she's wearing the leather jacket again. She's literally Tara shadow dancing by Andy Gett is jest fantastic. My love for Andy Gibb goes on to this very day. It was there. It was a perfect piece of me. And they cleared that song right, so I had to feel like it was like a moment that we're going
to talk about. I don't know the song, but like you have to have clearance for that was a huge hit song, huge hit song. It was okay, so Andy GiB Tara do you know the Yeah? Okay, So the Bejs had a baby brother and that was Andy Gibb and he like blew up And this is probably like late seventies, early eighties, super good looking kid. He was dating all the holly he was he was in a relationship was one Yes, give me a second Victoria principle. All right, I was so jealous of that. Everybody had
a crush on Victoria principles. This dude was and it was like, what this guy, come on, he was so seventies hot, Like that's the only way I can describe him with the like let me, I'll pull up a picture for you. I mean, I'm sure we'll talk about him again in pop culture. But do you ever get married? No? And then he died. It was so sad. He died really young, like like really young. I think maybe in his thirties. Oh my god, Tara, I do not know if this is what your first. Of all, it's so
he's so seventies. But literally, that guy he never buttoned his shirt up all the way, like that guy's never seen it. At the hair, he's never even seen the third button be buttoned, like look at this, look at this. But yeah, I don't know, I don't know. I don't want to speak for everybody, so I hope people will let us know. But for my age, that was like the first crush where you're like, I think I love him.
I can see it though. That hair he's never worn. Yeah, it's like very like like Beaver Harry styles, like, I guess, yes, that's exact. He is Harry Style. So anyway, he had like five big hits. Oh yeah, that sad tale of But anyway, how funny was it when she unzipped her window. First of all, she's scared the Jesus out of her when Emily shows up, and then she unzips her window.
I mean, just fantastic. What a great contrast sitting there bopping in her jeep wrangler right listening to the BGS or Andy Gibb and then has to unzip to the window to talk to her mother in front of her castle. It was just funny. And then when they find then they have their banter. I literally wrote, this banter is so good because she's talking about Suki's pregnant Las don't look at me. I had nothing to do with it. That was a great line. Oh, that was a great line.
Like a man I know went to her wedding suited Kirk like you know. But that was the part where I was like, I guess, you know, Lore, I really didn't have to tell her that Suki was pregnant like she, I guess you didn't have to. But also like god, why are they going back and forth? But just be like, but she did, But she did make a good point, Emily did. I went to her wedding. I sent her a wedding gift. Yeah, but wasn't she invited if I
remember the night before. Yeah. But still Emily, she's just trying to be a part of it and she just keeps getting rejected. Yeah, she's trying. She's right, Scott. She is kind of butt her because she's always left out. But Laura is thinking, I'm trying to build an inn. I got a kid going to college. I literally just forgot to tell you. Yeah. Yeah, but Mike, I was forgetting to tell your own mother. I mean, she barely
wants to go inside the house without her. It hurts Emily to know that she's just not important enough to Yeah, in the inner in the inner circle, right, tell me though, the circle of trust, Greg, tell me though. Then then we find out that Rory's going on the date, and Emily's like a gas that, like, did Rory possibly ask him? And then lord license, it was very proper. She had a Tiffany Lamb shade over the red line. I was,
It's God, he's a freaking genius. Then she says the sex in the City ensemble, which I was immediately like, oh my god, she knows sex in the city. You know, sex in the city. Like, am I in this in this thing? You know what I'm wondering, Scott is okay? For all? What the storyline is is so important? Right? Is it? The script? Because I think the reason we're loving this episode is like, we literally have twenty favorite lines. So even if the story is great, you gotta have
these lines. But okay, you right, but those lines come organically when and I don't want to get too wonky here, but uh, when when every scene hangs off of the spine. So the spine of the of this episode was all about dating and this kind of a thing, right and and and it but John mixed in and so every scene is related to that, right. So and the way he just uh mixed in everything and brought everything together, uh and uh and it's just it was absolutely brilliant.
It was absolutely brilliant because he stayed disciplined and he didn't go off on any kind of tangents at all, and he stayed with that theme. It felt like the episode was so fast. Yeah, yeah, it was. It was because he's because every scene because we were in it, and we were with it, and we were a little bit behind it, right, we didn't get ahead of it.
We didn't get bored, we didn't get like we don't because look, if there's a scene that doesn't hang off the spine properly, you get jarred out of the narrative. You're like, what's going on if there's any confusion in the audience, Right, But if it stays on that spine, if these scenes all hang perfectly off that spine, you're gonna be in it. It's like being on a roller coaster and it's like yeah, and you're just like whoa, whoa,
You're always anticipating. You're anticipating, you're anticipating. It's like it goes high, it goes low, it goes around, it goes slow, it goes fast. Yeah. So um, and he did that beautifully. I mean, it was perfect, episode perfect. And also I messed up. At the Friday night dinner, Lorelei was still wearing the argyle sweater with the black skirt with the leather jacket. Now as we go to Mrs Kim's, she's wearing the dress with the purple e patterned tight dress
with the leather jacket. So I apologize that I lured the outcomes with the hair and the eyes. There was a devastating look. It seems that there's only one furniture store anywhere, because I'm like, are they Mrs Kenny? They have to be right right? Dollar item? That was good and you know your mother would would hate this. Take it. I'll take it. What was I called? It was called
a lawn jockey? Um yeah, so yeah, So we sort of have that that interaction between Zimmerman, Natalie Zimmerman and lor Lie, which I do have a question when we get to it later, because I do think that Natalie sort of screwed lor Lie, which we can. I think she did too. That was so too and I don't think, yeah that was not. But it's like, how do you resist Emily. You imagine it's like she's tough, She's going to get you. Say, oh, I bogged down with ten
clients right now. I would love to help you, but I've got ten clients. Let me let me get you family gilmore. And you know she said that she goes listen, I will make sure I will see to it that you will never worry in this town again, young lady, right, so she had to she had to bow down and cough up the info with Yeah. I mean, god, I can't believe how much of there is in this episode because we're not even like doing the date. YEA favorite scene of the whole episode of the date the date
she is just so awkward. And my favorite line was the year and mints, like it actually made me think about it, like, oh my god, you're right, those are probably like every restaurant's YearIn miss Have we never talked about poop peanuts on this show? Peanuts bar bar peanuts, Yeah, or you might want to call them poop peanuts, which Tara did talk about, but you weren't on the show yet.
Go back, do you guys remember the episode where they go to the spa, Lorelai and Emily go to the spa and then they go to the night out at the restaurant bar and how Lindon's there and Emily dances with him and they're eating the poop peanuts. You guys, have we seen this episode already? Yes, but you remember back back back then? But I will see now they don't have like I'm thinking about going to a bar don't they give you like your personal bowl of peanuts.
First of all, after COVID, no one's getting you're in men's or poop peanuts. But the thing about the yurine min's were like they usually at the restaurants. The mints aren't like unwrapped, they're usually like do you know what I mean? First of all, it was it was a very Seinfeld moment because you remember, remember the George Castandra the girl really liked him, and then he was got all cocky and theoretical about he goes. You know, if you think about it, you know, manure what a weird word.
You got the ma and the newer manure weird. And then all of a sudden she doesn't want to see him anymore. I mean, let me tell you. And then I have to ask because I was like, I have to ask you, guys, are you a same side sitter or opposite? First of all, you can't sit on the same side. You can not. Your neck will hurt. It's not even done with talking about the urine mins. Sorry, sorry, let's go back to the urine There's more unpack on the twenty minutes to talk about the same side sitting. Yeah,
you got you got it? Urine mints, okay, is a real thing. And all I have to say is if I was on a date and the person I'm with mentioned urine mins, I'm in forever with them because it was it was so awkwardly amazing, Like I would have been like, I honestly poop peanuts and urine mint, Like if somebody reaches for the that, I would be like, no, I mean, in this conversation we're having now, it's like the conversation starter, right, Trevor is wrapped a little too tight,
didn't he Okay, you can't blame Trevor. Trevor is like having a good time and he's chatting and she is weird. But but the urine means would have won me over. But why can't why can't you find it funny? Right? I mean it's kind of funny. It was the best line in the whole thing. And he's just like and
she explains the urine mince to Lorala, so good. Lauren Graham is the best acting because like she's a daughter tells and she's like trying so hard to be like like, you know, she doesn't want to tell Rory, like you probably shouldn't have said that, so she's like going along with it, you know, she hangs a poor thing. And then it leads us to this amazing conversation about dating from Luke and Lore like, okay, I digress, Tara, all
you about the same side sitting. I mean, I personally don't like it, but if someone does it, I'm not really with judging them. It's up to them. I think you've got to be at a point in your relationship with somebody where you're so comfortable with them and you're so attracted to them that you want to be next to each other so you can touch each other. But like the first the first date, but you don't know
what I'm saying. No, no, but I'm saying the first date, don't you want to sit across with them and have a conversation, like, you know, right about the neck? That would really that's weird on the first date to that's that's very strange. I thought it was so funny when Laurel I suggested, like, say there's a draft and I have to move and then it Luke out of it. That's right. Luke thought of it. But then Trevor also was like, oh, there's a there's a draft, so he
got the power of suggestion. It was a great it was a great dat scene. It was it was for some reason I have I know this line happened vain party table of one. Why who said that? Didn't? Didn't Laurel say that? Yes? But why Luke? Yes? What was what was he being vain about? It was hilarious though? Why did he say that? But she did say it to Luke vain? Shoot, huh, well maybe somebody will. I'm going to watch it a second to see. This is
why people watch to show so many times. There's so much to cover and there's no way we can cover all of it. So the machine goes off and mom, are you there? And immediately it's like, oh no, at the say datings are the worst, and I think Luke says it's a horror oh and then god this episode. Luke says, I know within seconds, if I'm comfortable with somebody, and I say correct, correct, you feel it, you feeling
the gut right away. If you relax and you're comfortable, then you answer the phone and it's Mrs gil The only scene we skipped, so we skipped the scene where the roommates have the meeting, the roommate meeting. Yeah, we talked about that, but that was funny. Yeah, and Janet goes at it. Pears and Donna this is thrilling. M hm. See,
this is what happened. And she's doing math on her hand, on her good sheets with her marker, and Rory is trying to model the outfits for Tonna and Tona is like not even getting it, and May's like, this is a bonding thing. Talks about pheromones. If you jump up and down and got to swim, get pheromones and be more attractive. But I mean, you know, now, Paris is in a place where she's going to have other people who will stand up to her. They're not going to
be bullied by her. And she's found in Janet's character that very person who's just not having it though she likes she likes it because that's how Rory was with her.
I think she likes it well. And all these people are at the top of their game, meaning Janet is a college athlete who also goes to Yale and probably is super bright, so she's like, uh yeah, speaking of speaking of the finger, did you guys notice when Luke and Lorel are watching the movie and they're going over the rules and Luke doesn't know what the FBI warning is, and then I think he either talks or ships and
Lorela just goes does like finger acting. I'm like, oh my god, oh man leant me to tell you, guys. The number one reason I love gilmur Girl is in this episode. What is that? What is it? I don't get like a drum roll? Okay, okay, yeah, the laundry scene where there's the cutie they're doing. He took her laundry out, he folded it. He they're having this cute mantern and he said. She gets the the guts to say,
do you want to have coffee? And he says no, no, because only only on Gilmore Girls are you getting a total unexpected just right. I think this was such an important episode for character development for Rory because like she's now on her own. She has to learn how to like be an adult, and like it's like loyalizes like oh, ask someone out on a date, like you know, like go do it yourself, and I feel like we saw that and then she gets rejected at the end, which
is like a part of life. And I feel like Rory is not used to rejection, so it's just good fades out. Yeah, and we're just left hanging going at a little cutie he was and like, I guess, why does he have to get a copy with her? Doesn't want to? Yeah, John Stevens showed me the way into this new dynamic between mother and daughter not being together, and it's really exciting. It's gonna be I'm really looking
forward to watching this. You know. I thought, oh, you know, take it out as ours hollow, we got problems, but no, no, no, no, this is this is actually even better in a lot of senses because we get stars Hall and we get Yale. And that's how I felt. I felt like I was really excited every time we went back to you. Yeah, I was so wait some one of our producers put
it up there and I missed it. Of why she said party of one, your vain, vain party one looking at him because she was staring at him during It's it's like that annoying person that looks at looking at him during the like like watch this part, like hey, this is the good part. Are you watching him? She was watching him, watching right right right? So okay, guys, how many bowls of urine mins. Do you give this episode? Oh? This is on a scale of ten, I'm giving it.
I love this episode. This is one of my favorite, top three, top three. I'm watch nine and a half bowls of urine mins a bowl for half a bowl to give ten's out for any Yeah, I wouldn't say this out for me, really really really yeah, you're gonna give tents out that easily, right, You don't just give out urine men's like they're nothing. I don't know. I think this was This was two or three great episodes packed into one, and I don't know how he did it or how they did it, but it was fantastic.
Every single sentence moved this story forward. Everything was funny. There were more funny lines, more funny situations than any any episode I've seen or can remember. I just was just so tickled by this entire thing. And I'm going, when we're done here, when we're done recording, I'm going to watch the thing again. Watch that dude, patt is burger for sure. Well that's why I thought it was a fake burger, because I was like, he's just patting it,
patting it. And also everybody, if anybody can tell me, where to get Natalie Zimmerman's turquoise necklace. Sorry, one more fashion moment which I actually almost tried to google last night. The black sweater with the heart on the sleeves. These were popular then and I can't remember it, like the black Kashmir sweater hearts on the sea and then the design on the back. And if anybody knows who made that sweater, put it right here next to my Hello
Kiddy alarm clock. And then I think the perfect uh exclamation point to put on this episode is to have that Smith song playing. Oh I didn't notice that because I was way too It was just okay, now we're in college and things are cool. Yeah, and this kid's listening to this and he's right right, yeah, Meat is Murder is like a great song. Yeah, it's just the line itself, and it was was like, fantastic way to end it. Um. I Also, I'll save this for popular culture,
