I am all in, kiss you, I am all in with Scott Patterson and I heart radio podcast. L Right everybody, Uh, and we have a very special guest coming up. Christy Carlson wrote Eat like a Gilmore. She's got all of her very specific recipes from the show. She invented some of her own. There's I don't know a couple of hundreds of recipes in this book. They just Amy sent me the book, and uh, I've I've actually made a couple of these. Uh, here's the book. We've made a
couple of these recipes. Uh, and they're delicious, delicious. Can't wait to talk to Christy and she will be on right after these words. Yeah, Christie, how are you doing? I'm good. How are you doing? Wait a minute, wait right off the bat here you were a stockbroker? A stockbroker, Yeah, for about a year, not not very long. And where were you stock brokering actually for Morgan Stanley Right in Burbank, right by the studio in the Disney Channel building. Is
that right? Yeah? That is fascinating. I had just got I had just gotten my finance degree. Um, and one of my professors was like, have you ever thought about doing this? And I was like, not really, and he said, I think you'd be really good at it. So he just brought me in and I was not very good at it, but I was good with the investing part, but not people and their money are a little squishy. You know, they have to dollar cost average. What's wrong?
Just do it. Nobody can predict the future. Just put a little bit in every month. What's your problem. You could do it too. Anybody can do it. It's like, it's not hard getting rich. You just need twenty thirty years, right, yeah, yes, exactly. But so let me ask you enough. The bad is the FED right now? Do they need to pull the trigger now, like to stave off inflation? What's going on? Why are they why? Why are they being so hesitant
because the economy is in such good shape. I think I think they are hesitant now because of it's been so long since they did a big raise that the hysteria that will I mean, the market has already been having a tough time. I think they don't want to They can do a quarter point I mean, if they're gonna do if they're gonna do four to seven hikes in it in the next year, year and a half two years, When the hell are they going to start?
I mean, it's like it's almost like they feel like like they want inflation to be a permanent fixture of the economy. Maybe I really think it's something that is if they If it were me, I would think, Okay, a lot of this inflation is probably supply chain oriented. So if the supply chain can sort of work itself out over the next quarter or two, then there won't be any need to raise the rate. So that's what I would how I would look at it. Demand demand
is not going to change. Is supply just will be available. The supply will sort of get that regulate that'll drive prices back down. Okay, all right, Well, you know, I guess Powell knows more better what he's doing than I do. I don't have that job that he's getting it from all sides. Man, Oh my goodness. Um, but you know that's one of the areas, like to apple in I'm
fascinated with it, and um, you know, it's interesting. I never had money, and then when I got money, I thought, oh boy, uh, there's so many people coming after it. I'd better learn how to keep it. So that's you know, then you you start to educate yourself a little bit um. And the thing about getting it is you can get it, and if you don't invest it, then it's gradually eroding over time. Definitely important. This is not what I was expecting to talk about with you today. What are your
top picks? You still like big tech or do you think they're going to really take a bath in the next quarter. I took a big bath this year on a workhorse. I was all in, did you were you in on that bandwagon? No? Is that an I p o, No, it was it's a it's a they do electronic vehicles, and so everyone thought the government was going to do this huge control. That's when you would definitely invest. But jeez, and they didn't and they picked in the company. So
it was a bad day. Oh my gosh, oh man, listen, I uh, I don't know. A couple of years ago, I I you know, I got very aggressive with three three names, and uh two have melted down, ah horribly, But one really popped. I mean, it really really popped. And it's and it's you know, it's an interesting it's sort of a David Goliath, David versus Glide. You know, it's a. It's a big tech story where you know, the big techie stole some I P. And it's like the typical thing that big tech does, and I mean
everybody does. But they steal the I P and then they you know, they change the name of the the I P and then they manufacture and sell it themselves, and they got caught and you know that kind of a thing, and then they try to destroy the little company by litigating it and delaying, delaying for years and years and years and all this kind of stuff. So it's interesting things going on in big heck. So I you know, I took and it's interesting how you invest
per your personality and your experience, and I took. You know, I was never a goliath, always at David, and I took the David's side worked out and it continues and it continues to work out. It's like there really isn't justice in the world, and there's justice in the investing world. So I know, um, that's what they always say to do is and you're I mean, exactly what you're saying
is right. You picked a few things, you diversified, and when one is down, or a couple are down, the other one should carry you so so that you're never so far in the weeds that you can't recover right, right, exactly right. You know. I wanted to get into this on a on a on a sort of introductory level for people, because they don't teach you about investing or or finance in school, and they should. I mean, the financial literacy is a massive problem and people and I
never knew how to invest. And you know, you know, I do the same thing everybody does, know that has any any bit of knowledge about investing, is they go back, you know, these big names, they're high flying stocks, and they're multiple hundreds, multiple thousand dollars, and they go, oh, I you know, I could have got that for six cents in darn it. Inside is always um, but you can't.
But you can't let that guide you. But yeah, I just think people need to really understand what money is, and I think a lot of people don't understand what money represents and what it what it can do for you. Um. So yeah, it seems very intimidating, it does. You know, it's a far it's far more complex than I ever realized, but it's also at the same time far more simple. Um. And you know, people like you and professional uh investment
advisors really simplify the process. UM. So I was so I I was wanting to to write a book about that or consult with somebody, UM because I think it's really really important to get something into the curriculum at schools so that people really understand what you know, compounded interest is. I mean if you if if you were seven or eight years old and you understood the power of compounded interest, it would it would inspire you to learn more about what investing. You know, what does this
what does this diversification mean? You know, in in stocks and bonds and real estate? What what does it mean? And how do we you know what does uh you know, risk aversion mean? What what does that mean? And what does risk off trades mean versus risk on trades? What does it mean? And you know, money is fascinating. It is absolutely cycles of money globally are It's absolutely fascinating.
And the one thing I find disturbing is people are really attacking right now the monetary system um um capitalism per se because you know, have a whole generation of people that grew up in really trying times, you know, during the two thousand seven UH the subprime crisis, right, so you can't blame them, but wouldn't it be better, uh, you know, to to really educate yourself on what money
does and what it really represents. Anyway, this I have been a huge proponent of this for many years, that that we teach about all of these things that are important in school, but these really critical life skills are sort of missing. And and you say seven or eight, and a lot of people might hear that and think, well, that's way too young to start up talking about money, But I don't think it is. We start teaching kids about recycling and all of these other sort of high
concept ideas, I don't think. I think kids are ready to learn at that age. And if you just break it down and make it like gamify it, make it something fun, then you just instill start instilling those values and those those that understanding early on. And I'm actually a big fan of the apps that they have rolled out in the past few years because it doesn't require you to buy a hundred shares of IBM, you know, for ten or fifteen thousand dollars. You can get in
there for a hundred bucks, five bucks or whatever. It gives you a chance to sort of dip your toe in and get comfortable with it. So I I love your idea. I think a book would be great. Yeah, you know. Anyway, Um, well you're here because you wrote and had published. And by the way, I think I spoke with your publishing house about doing an autobiography. Who published your book? Yeah, I talked to sky Horse do it? Are you gonna do it? I'm not gonna do it now.
We couldn't make the deal. We could not make the deal. Yeah, it's kind of a funky deal. They're they're they're you know, look, I get what they have to lay out to to do to print and to do all this stuff. I get it, but I mean it's just it was just absurd. The whole thing was absurd. Are you gonna Are you gonna try it with another publishing I don't know. Yeah,
I mean I'm talking to the bunch of people. Yeah, um that would be great, But then I have to sit down and actually write it, and I don't know if I want to do that anyway. Um where are you write? Uh? So you listen, listen, I got this cookbook. Okay, you've got it? Yeah, eat like wow, And let me tell you something I'm I love to cook, and I do a lot of cooking for my family because I just relaxes me. It's one It's one of these things
that that relaxes me. And there's all these really great and even very simple, easy, easily explained, and brilliant recipes in here. Look, Mac and she be for rown all this stuff that I am familiar with. But it but but you're putting, you know, you're adding these extra layers, and it's all very easily explained, look easily laid out. It's wonderful. So I sit here and I cook with this, like the high tea cucumber mint sandwiches. Who would ever think to make these? I made these the other day?
You did? Yeah, you got peanut peanut butter and jelly sandwiches and and Sana Santa burger. What else? What we have mock turtle soup? I mean, just one. I can't wait to really I mean I've done a couple of these. I can't wait to really get into this book. So tell us tell us some you know, how did you come to this side? Why how did you come up with the idea in the first place. I just wanted it.
I wanted it for myself. I mean I watched the show from the very beginning in two thousand and food is everywhere and in the town, it's Friday night dinner. It's built into that, It's built into Luke's Diners, Suki's this chef, so there's all of this food everywhere, and so as someone who likes to cook like you do, I was always thinking, when are they going to come
out with a cookbook? And then they never did, and I they kind of teased one because very early days on the website there was a little section that said Suki's recipes, like this is ancient history, and I remember seeing like two or three recipes for pretty basic stuff, and I thought, Okay, they're gonna come out with a
with a cookbook, but it never came. So fifteen years later, um, I just launched a Kickstarter and thinking I want to make these recipes for myself, maybe there are a few other fans out there who want them too, And then it just like ballooned into this big, huge thing. It It was covered in BuzzFeed and then Food and Wine and and the News and all of these places picked
up the story. And so I found out that there are a lot of fellow fans out there who wanted a cookbook, and so eat like a Gilmore was born.
It was pretty amazing. How long did it take it to to compile all these recipes and and we're there, you know, ten times many recipes, and you had to you had to kill your favorite children as it were, you know, and and and and come up with these um for this cook For the first cookbook, I wanted to make sure to get in almost all of the iconic recipes, things like mock turtle soup, Founder's Day Punch, Johnny Machette, all of this stuff, because I knew that's
what we all wanted as fans. And then I sort of wanted to to use those as foundation recipes and then build around them with things that would actually make a cookbook that people would want to use for real life, not just some gimmicky thing. So there were a few, you know, I probably started with a hundred and thirty options, and I whittled it down. Some of recipes I just couldn't get to work. Some of them didn't taste very good, so um, So I got down to I think a
hundred and four hundred and five somewhere in that. But then there's a second book and actually I have a third book coming out on August two. The food is just unending in this show. Wow. Yeah, Um, so did you did? Did did your publisher send you on a little bit of a tour? Did you go out and meet the people and do book signings or was it on that level or no? I Um, I scheduled a tour for myself. I did a southern California tour of
Barnes and Nobles. Good for you and m got to meet a lot of fans and talk about the show and take pictures and all that fun stuff. It was really so you picked up the phone yourself, You called the local Barns and Nobles says, hey, what do you think about this? And the minute they heard Gilmore, they're like, yes, let's do it right. Well, you know, I waited. I didn't do the tour until the book had been out
for a year, so they already knew the book. And um, you know, it was before the holidays when I knew all the Gilmore's were in like fall Gilmore mode, and um, it was fun. It was just really fun. That's great. And so the people came out and they loved it and anything associated with Gilmore people that fans just love it.
They just love it and they just love it. And what was really nice is, Um, I had met a few of the cast members at the fan fest, and so each time I went out to a Barnes and Noble, someone came with me, like either Aires came with me, or Rose came with me, or Reni came with me. So I got to sit and chat with them and get to know them better, and it was really fun, huh and very very interesting. Let me see, we have some fan questions here. Um. This is Maryland from San Antonio.
What is your favorite recipe in the book? Well, you mentioned it earlier. I am very partial to the Bifferoni rest. I think we're gonna have that tonight. You actually, because it's Uh. I love that kind of food, but I don't like eating it with all the preservatives and stuff in it. So knowing that it's all whole ingredients, is it tastes very similar and feels better to eat? Yeah? Okay, Uh, this is Charlie from Seattle. Suki had such incredible food.
Was there anything that was really tough to recreate? Yes? I have yet to create the basket made out of a pretzel stuffed with goat cheese. Oh my goodness not Yeah, I haven't done that yet. Still working on that one. Okay, let us let us know when it's ready. Uh uh. This is Joshua from Delaware. He doesn't say where. What are some examples of recipes on Luke's diner menu, I guess that you have in the book. Well, we know
the Santa Burger, Yeah, the Santa Burgers in there. Um all of the diner food, the pumpkin pancakes that Luke makes with the cinnamon butter and the um it just pancakes, the Monte Cristo sandwich, all the Lukes diner favorite but Luke's really Luke's yours, Like this is a great area here, but Luke's is very um unique, and that Luke also cooks at home, So Luke there's more depth to his abilities and his cooking style than the diner sort of
lets on. So there are also things like Luke bakes his own focaccia bread, so there's a Lukes focaccia bread recipe in there. And he also makes like a lamb stew for Laura Lai and so that recipe is in there, so it's sort of has a wider spectrum than the Emily dinners or the Suki recipes. Sort of a very interesting character in that way. Have you been contact and this from me? Uh, I'm Scott from Los Angeles, UM, that's a question. Uh actually from New Jersey, but I'm
in Los Angeles. Now. Have you been contacted by any manufacturers to strike a deal to have any of these products mass marketed? That's a great question. I have not. I loosely had an idea to UM two package Founder's Day Punch because it's a lot of ingredients and I think it would be easier to I mean, I don't know. It's an alcoholic beverage, so that might be hard, but I thought it would be a really fun one. But I have not. Let's in Founder's Day Punch, just the
basic ingredients. What what what alcohol? It's several different alcohols. I think it's I haven't made it in a while, but brandy vodka, uh, some pineapple juice, some passion fruit um juice, things like that. But it ends up taste like uh, fruity summer beverage that doesn't have any alcohol in it at all. Right, right. Um okay. So this is from Carla from what is this? Oh Phoenix? The book goes into how to make the perfect cup of coffee? Oh, now you get into my area. What is the most
important step to making the perfect cup of coffee? Already know the answer to this? What what is it? Well? I think it's starting with a clean everything, a clean pot, a clean water vessel, clean everything. Water, It's the most important thing. Water. Um okay. This is from Eli from San Diego. What kind of dishes are offered at al Al's Pancake World? I didn't do many El's recipes, but
I didn't. You know, lor L and Rory come home one day and they can instantly are guessing which international food they have in the bag, and they always guess Moroccan. So I did a Moroccan recipe in the cookbook. Um okay. This is from Dana from this I can't see this uh Minneapolis? Okayple um. So this she's asking she's a beginner in the kitchen, what recipe do you suggest her trying as a beginner? You know, the beverages are very accessible for any level of expertise, and also some of
the more short order recipes from Luke's. The sandwiches like um, the patty melt or the tuna melt, or just anything that's quick and easy to make where it's just bread and whatever the ingredients the insides are made of. Those are pretty pretty easy to start with. Okay, um, and how many so have you? Have you tried all of these recipes? Have you had served your maid and served yourself everything in this book multiple times? All of the recipes? So I had to try some of them. I tried
a couple of times. Some of them I had to try ten or eleven twelve times because I just couldn't get it the way I wanted it. So I have had Yeah, so interesting, interesting, interesting, interesting? Yeah. Okay, Now we're going to do a segment Christie called rapid Fire. Are you ready to do rapid Fire? Ready? I'm just gonna fire questions that you gotta answer them as fast as you can. Okay, here we go. How do you
take your coffee? Can you smell snow? Yes? Are your team logan jesser deine uh logan half Jess half Jess? Who's Who's the daddy? Logan? Show your binge watching right now? I just started only murders in the building. One word to describe Gilmore Girls. What is the ultimate Gilmore Girl food? Cheeseburger. There you go, all right, thank you for coming on. Um, you gotta come back. We gotta we gotta talk money, we gotta talk finance. Yeah, I would love that. We

I have this. Um, I don't know if you're gonna be able to see it, but I have this which I got because in like two thousand to douzen three, I was working in retail and Sally Struthers came into my store and she found out from my team that it was my birthday, and so I got to meet her. I didn't know she knew it was my birthday. She was just sweet and warm, and she hugged me and she felt like my mom, and she was just incredible.
And then three weeks later I got an envelope that had a signed picture from you with my you know, addressed to me and a little card on on Gilmore Girls stationary that said Christie, Happy Birthday. Love Sally. So, isn't she just incredible? What a what a beautiful woman? What a what a what a considerate, lovely person that is? I mean, he goes out of their way to do that for someone that they've never incredible. She and Rose
are like the sweetest. But I'm totally inspired by those Yeah. Yeah, I've had I've had Sally on twice and Rose on twice maybe throws three times. She was part of the they were both part of the Uh we did it like holidaying, we did a holiday. Yeah. I love those two so much. Um. This episode that Rose was just on was incredible, isn't she isn't she? Fan? What a what a rock contour? She is something you just you just sit back and shut up, which the fans really
appreciated and let her talk. She's so good at it, you know, she's so great to listen to. Um, and so are you fascinating? Fascinating? Yeah, you know what, I'll tell you how to contact me right now. You know, it could really help people, because I sure wish I had that help when I was younger. You know, you know when you get those little chunks of money and you don't know what to deal with them and you blow them. Yeah. I just heard this week that if you start in your twenties putting away twelve hundred dollars a year, by the time
you're sixty five, you'll have a million bucks. And if you wait until your forties, you have to put away twenty thousand dollars a year to get to the same goal compounded interest. Ladies and gentlemen, starting early is the is the key. It's magic. Yes, starting for sure. Yes, let's uh let's do that. So support at scott ep dot com. I'll call you, we'll discuss it.
