John Mather je astrofyzik a kosmolog. V roce 2006 obdržel společně s Georgem F. Smootem Nobelovu cenu za fyziku za objev toho, že reliktní záření pocházející z vesmíru má podobu záření absolutně černého tělesa. A považuje se za "otce" Webbova vesmírného dalekohledu.
