Like, what are things leading up to draft day?

Like, I don't know Like, before you knew and then when you kinda knew And then like the day of Like, what's, none of us have a clue So, I've never been drafted for anything I think I got picked My aunt got selected for jury duty once That's the most I got got I don't know, just a little bit of insight on that Kind of experience, I guess Yeah, I mean I mean, that's a big question Very fortunate in my hockey career But leading back, like to those days It was, there's no other way to explain it

That unbelievable So leading up to it I was ranked in the top five for the draft So I got to do the things like The NHL flew us to Anaheim Anaheim was playing Ottawa in the finals In the cup finals that year So they flew us to Anaheim It was myself, Patrick Kane, Carl Alsner, Sam Gagnier, and Kyle Turris Never heard any of that Wow Yeah I was looking at the guys drafted in your ear It's wild Did they play for a car?

Yeah So they flew us to Anaheim with our dads We got to spend So we got to watch game I can't remember who's game three and four Game one and two I think Ottawa was the top team out of those two So I think it was game three and four So got to watch game three and four in Anaheim Got to do all the interviews and stuff with Don Cherry And got to sit with Snoop Dogg We sat with Snoop Dogg at a game Snoop Got to sit with Snoop Dogg and what's the other guys name?

He's an actor Anyway, it'll come to you But we got to sit with them for the one game The whole game, eh? That's fucking Yeah, the whole game In Anaheim, it wasn't Will Ferrell or something No, it was I was just gonna say, did you do what Snoop does with Snoop?

I was 17 at the time with my dad So no, I couldn't do that That was after the kids were in bed with the dads He wasn't drafted yet The dads went out to Newport Beach Yeah, one of them So that stuff was cool Got to do a whole bunch of like TSN, sports net All that kind of fun stuff And then at the draft, obviously you go in a couple of days early Do some fun stuff The draft was in Columbus, Ohio So got to do some stuff at OSU football stadium

And obviously you have to do all the pre-draft, pre-interviews So you have to go through the whole interview process With teams that you think are gonna take you Or that they think they might take you So do all that kind of thing And then draft days, you know, you wake up You go to the rink early And you're with your family I had a bunch of family and a couple buddies And so you're sitting there Obviously I was fortunate again I didn't sit there long, which was great

It wasn't a high stress situation It was just like euphoria, right? Like you're finally taken And at that point, and this is a question on that Off the Halsapodcast, did you know where you were gonna go? I had an idea Florida told me that they were gonna take me at 10 If I dropped 10 So once Florida came up, I kind of knew That was my time So I had a little 30 second pump up This is my thing right here, right?

So then your name gets called From that point to walking up to the stage It's kind of a blackout You just lose your jacket to the guy And you walk up on stage and you shake Gary Betman's hand And he says, welcome to the NHL, congratulations And you go and do the pictures And then after that, it's kind of just more media stuff Do pictures and talk to people And yeah, it's all like It's, and even talking about it now Looking back on it, it sounds like fairy tale

And Hollywood kind of, you know, it's a very cool experience Again, very fortunate enough to have been able to live that experience And do that I don't know, I just, Hockey's given me so much It's so good to me, I just can't say enough about my experiences And how good it's been Well, I, not to steal, I guess, from off the hosel But when you're talking about this, it kind of reminded me I was like, you talked about a, they talked about a A rookie party or something

And I just, I put two and two together here You know, Russia owes you 250 grand But don't you owe someone 10 grand for a rookie party Or something like that?

Well, I don't owe them anymore Yeah, yeah, yeah, allegedly No Yeah, so, I actually, so funny I got to go to a couple of rookie parties Before my own rookie party Yeah So I got called up twice Without playing a game So they didn't make me pay for the rookie party But I got to attend them Nice One was in Nashville, one was in Pittsburgh And then finally It's a one in Nashville, no fun Zero fun Worse plays in the world Yeah But the year that I was like fully up in the NHL

And got to do my own rookie party Yeah We were in Los Angeles We went to Boa's steakhouse in Beverly Hills And then went to a pool party I think it was the W pool party in Hollywood Okay But the steakhouse bill, it was myself, Jason Garrison Dmitry Kulikov, Sean Mathias And I want to say Mark Santorelli I think there was five of us Yeah Four or five of us Anyway, we each had to pay We each had to pay $10,000 for the bill So it was a, I think it was more than, like the bill was more than that

But they all made us, the rookies, pay $10,000 each So at the time we're basically living on like American League contracts And like just getting into NHL contracts So we're like getting money, but we're spending money None of us, none of our credit cards could I think all of our credit cards were probably pretty close to maxed out at the time From stupid things and whatever So none of us could put any of it on our credit cards So we're like, Kaber, Brian McCabe

He's like, yeah, don't worry about it So he pulls out his black card, puts the bill on his black card He's like, just pay me back throughout the year Like every paycheck just give me like a grand here, grand there So yeah, that was a fun night to spend Yeah, no, no, not like, I got to, I have to say Not to steal from off the hosel that I heard that story But I was like, oh man, he's got to tell that story on our, like that's a great story Oh it is, yeah, there's a couple stories

Let us stay there, if he was there, we'd go to the games and whatever So one weekend or one midweek, we had three days off Gary was on the road, so we're like, let's go to Montreal It's the best city in Canada, like let's go Yeah So I packed up the car, drove up to Montreal, stayed at Gary's place Being the snoopy younger cousin that I am We're snooping around his apartment, like, yeah, this is unbelievable End up going in his sock drawer, and we find 10 grand cash

And we all look at each other like, yeah You could have paid buddy back the whole time I don't know where it went, Pricey Take the 10 grand and have an absolute night He comes home, oh yeah, oh yeah, absolutely Oh yeah, he says Fuck yeah 10 grand cash, like we're definitely taking that Fucking go So, went out, had a big one He's never said a word about it, never has like We brought it up to him, he's like, I don't think that happened

Yeah That's another cousin, I think he said on and off the hustle, he was a big inspiration or whatever you want to call it growing up Like, you know, a mentor, I guess you would say, but Totally, so yeah, again, I was fortunate to have, I mean, me and Kerry are usually older than me, but Shane is, I can't remember, I think it's 18 or 19 years older So as a kid growing up, seeing one of your, so Shane's mom and my dad are brother and sister

And then Kerry's dad and my dad are first cousins, so Kerry and I are second cousins, Shane and I are first cousins So, yeah, growing up, young kid in Canada, having a cousin who was, he was the seventh overall pick, like playing the NHL at 18 You have this role model and this mentor to kind of show you the ropes and tell you how it's done and do this, don't do that It was great to have him And even to this day, like, and again on off the hustle

To this day, he's been nothing but instrumental in trying to help me So a couple years ago, like, COVID happened and all this and I got injured, but he was the manager of the Spangler Cup, the Spangler Cup team for a couple years and Every year he wanted me to come, he wanted me to come and the thing was, he's like, I've never got a chance to play or manage or coach or something with a family member

So it was always like family first and this and that, you know, so he's been absolutely phenomenal and now he's with the Leafs and He's helped me at a point in time I was looking for like a scouting role or something like that and he was always the first one to like push me in this direction or that direction or like get serious with this person or

Or that person and he's just such a, he's a great man, he's just a good hockey person, he's a good person in general and I can't thank him enough for everything that he's done for me Yeah, no, that's awesome And does he have a Yahoo email address that we could potentially add him on Zoom? And he's like, now these guys, they have their training facilities unreal, it's like kitchen and their work out facility He said they get that LA air and he described it as they lift open these garage doors and they basically half ask it to work out outside and all this stuff, was that all there when you were there? Yeah, absolutely I was in Florida longer but even more so in Florida People ask me, what was it like playing in Florida?

Like it's not really a hockey market and like man, playing in Florida and LA was the best No doubt You drive a nice car to the rink every day in shorts and flip flops and a wife beater if you want to And you go to the rink, you practice, you put in your work and then you go to the golf course What do you mean, what is it like playing and then you go to your apartment on the beach and then you go to the beach and you go for dinner on the beach, it was the best

Dude, I always get fired up when I get to like, so sometimes the Mustangs will get ice in August, hey, at a Finity place And it's like, oh fuck yeah, you got your shorts on, t-shirts and you're playing at a Finity, Finity's nice rink, super nice rink for us man I knew, like it was built in like 2011, like it's a new rink, but yeah, you get a couple of the local pros to come out and pump boys up a little bit before they had self for their fucking camps Oh yeah, yeah

Team finally gets to Philadelphia. So they plan Anywhere from shipping cars packing the house Relocating all of it and then when it gets to the other place they unpack it They do all the stuff to make it a seamless transition for families so when the wife or When the husband or the player gets traded the wife isn't stuck there doing all this stuff to you know

Assemble everything pack everything move everything. It could just be the family goes and a company comes in and does all the stuff So Yeah, they've got a they've got a stranglehold on the on the business They're kind of the only people that do it so they've they've had some big clients and they've done very well at it And it's it's been a cool cool experience for them and even for me, you know seeing some of my ex teammates

LA was just starting a road trip. So I met LA in Nashville We went to Detroit and then we went to I think Columbus after that. So another three days Go out to LA. I have to live in a hotel for whatever three Think it was three weeks until we could find a house, you know get settled do all this So Lauren is in Florida packing stuff up. We have a dog. We have cars

So he fucking picked me up. We drove 130 the whole way We we get to moosman and it was like one of their first games or something and uh, there was like a line up out the door to this game I don't know why it was so packed the the manager of moosman was sitting out there And he's like he waited in the line and he saw us come running out like I'm not running We were walking like we weren't like trying to be there like we're like we're here whatever
