In a lightning in a bottle moment, viral marketing, lack of mainstream understanding of the genre, and a group of unknowns combined to scare the daylights out of audiences.

But perhaps more intriguing is the life this film continues to have as one of the most successful independent films of all time, the gold standard in found footage, and a film that continues to surprise and terrify generations removed from its release.
