The links will also be in the show notes . G'day guys and welcome to Holly the OT podcast . My name is Holly and I am an occupational therapist looking to create a judgment-free zone for all OT students , new grads and early year therapists . Join me as I give my honest opinions on the highs and the lows and the ins and the outs of being an OT .
Before I start today's episode , I'd like to acknowledge the Wujak Nongaw people who are the traditional custodians of the land this episode was recorded . Get out back to another episode of Holly the OT podcast . Thank you so much for joining me . It's been a little while and for that I'm very , very sorry .
How to put people messaging , checking in , making sure that everything is okay and I am so fine and dandy . I've just been super busy in that end of year crunch , getting all of my clinical things sorted and I've just been so slack in getting a podcast episode out there . So for those of you who have a message , thank you so much .
It actually is so kind , but all is good . I've got two podcast EPs to drop before the end of the year from having a little holiday , which is so exciting , but yes , all is well .
Today's EPP is potentially my favorite episode of all the episodes I've done and I know I say that often , but today's guest is potentially my favorite person to ever walk this earth . Actually , I'm going to say yes , he's definitely my favorite person to ever walk this earth and that is my lovely boyfriend Kane . There is nothing informative in this podcast .
There is very minimal OT chat . Oh , there is a little bit , but we are just having a laugh . I actually recorded this as a bonus episode . We did it about three and a half weeks ago and it was just meant to be a little filler , like while I knew I wasn't going to have time to do any interviews , and then I just forgot to post it .
So its purpose was just to fill the gaps . But now it gets its own standalone week . It's standalone month almost , and I hope you guys enjoy . Kane is the absolute best and he's such a good sport and I just love him for coming on the pod , so enjoy that . Before we do that , I'm going to get into my highs and my lows .
My high for the week is that I started my registration process for NDIS , which is really daunting , but also exciting that I'm in a position where I'm able to do so and I'm confident to do so .
Obviously , with the NDIS review , there's been some recommendations that have come out of that and obviously nothing is mandated yet , but I'm at a position where I think I would rather be registered , even though I have no agency managed clients .
But yeah , I think it's always been a bit of a contentious topic about whether you need to or don't need to be registered . So I'm going down the path and I'm going to share it all with you guys . It's not something that's going to happen quickly . Obviously , I'll have to go through audit , but I'll share the process with you guys for anyone who is interested .
My low for the week is I don't actually really have one , because it's been a really good week Cain's been home the week that I'm recording this but actually I do have one my niece , my little niece . She graduated from preschool and she just looked so adorable and I was just really sad that I wasn't there .
And in the same week , my nephew he won the Academic Excellence Award at his kindergarten , first year of school , and I again was just really , really sad that I wasn't there . But I'm so proud of them , love them . But it's just one of those things I feel like . Every second episode I'm talking about how sad I am for missing out on something .
But that's okay , that's enough from me . I'm going to jump straight into this app . Highs and lows are done . Let's get into the absolute best podcast interview I have done . Happy listening , welcome . The next guest to the Holly the OT podcast is my favorite guest of all time , potentially the most requested guest of all time as well . Welcome guest .
Hey guys , please introduce yourself . Who are you ? I'm Cain . I'm Holly Spanner . Hello , cain , holly's partner . Thank you so much for joining us here today . Thank you for having me . Holly the OT podcast . Are you excited to be here ? I'm excited to be here . What are you expecting out of this episode ? I don't know .
Do you know what you're going to be asked ?
I have no idea . Have you been briefed ? Well , obviously , it's three truths and a lie .
Three truths and a lie .
And then the fun fact at the end . But everything in between is just Just nice . A little bit chit chat .
A little bit chit chat . Have some yugs . Yeah Well , thanks so much for joining , as I said , very highly requested . You have been on the podcast before , though this isn't your first time . No , it's not For those who may be new to the pod when have you been on the podcast before ?
I've done a couple of fun facts here and there the old fun fact cameo .
Yes , you have done some fun facts before , and where were we when we were doing that for Sunday ?
I think it was spring , I think the other ones .
I can't remember . Oh , you're going to specific geographical locations . Well , yeah . Well , it more just meant like we were travelling , oh yeah on the road , on the road On the way over here , and when you say over here To , Perth Correct To our new home , To our new state .
West is not best .
West is not best . No , we're still on the fence about West being best . West is okay . Yeah , easter's beast , oh , Easter's beast , I don't know , I don't know , I like it . I like it . Well , as you have introduced already or you've already mentioned , kane that you are here for one purpose and one purpose only , and that is for your Two Truths and a Lie .
I now know why it took you so long because you were doing Three Truths and a Lie when two was all that was needed . But what have you got for me ? Two Truths and a Lie .
And before you start , I will just say sorry to interject , as you were so excited to tell me you do love this game , and whenever I have a new person on interview , someone else , you always ask me what was the Two Truths and a Lie ? So tell me , what do you got ?
So my favourite lol is Red Frogs . Yeah , I had a big love for riding bikes and after three years I still have no idea what an occupational therapist does .
That's a lie . They're all true . Wait , no , okay , that would be a lie then , because you do know what an occupational therapist does , and you love bikes and you love Red Frogs , so is that your lie ?
That is my lie .
So you do know what OTs ? I was like , what are they ? Yes , you do know who's that . You do know what OTs ? Okay , so you do know what OTs is ? Yeah , you do . What an incredible segue .
I know , and this is actually one of the questions that was sent in by a lovely listener , and it was one I was going to ask you anyway , and I always ask any non-OT guests onto the pod , and that is to give me your best explanation of occupational therapy . Go .
So you tried to help people do everyday life things as what one of us will function as one person would normally do .
You've dropped some great words in their function every day . I love it . Would you like to give specific examples for what I do ?
every day . You do pediatrics , pediatrics , right , you work with kids , as you guys already know what pediatrics is , anyway . Well , you come home you say you play a lot of games . I do play a lot of games . Emotional regulation yeah , regulate their emotions , get in touch with their bodies .
Yeah , what were we doing yesterday , when you were laying in the office while I was doing work , when you were laying down and I was telling them ?
tell them tell them what were we doing , getting in touch with my body and feeling the word You're . We were doing a body check .
A body check , that's the one . And we were teaching you about your interception . Yes , and you were very good at it . I did all right . I mean rightly so , as you should be like . You have no reason to not be good at your interceptive awareness . But , yes , you learned about a body check . Anyway , I cut you off . Continue . Insert cricket sound here .
What about this ? What are some of my favorite activities to do with the children ? The body soft , the tunnel .
Yes , and he's sort of game We've got Mr man , oh Mr man .
And what's Mr man for ?
So helps the children , or when you tear out or where their feelings are .
Yeah , Mr man is body check Like you could do body check because you've got interseptive awareness . But children who don't have that need the visual of Mr man to do his body like , do their body checks Like they look at Mr man . So , yeah , great , whoa , you want to be my AHA .
No , no , I'm good , another one . Zones of regulation , hit me . What are the zones ? Yellow , yes , excited yeah . Blue , sad yeah , red , cranky , yeah . And green , good , good yeah .
Good , happy , calm . Yeah , we wouldn't say anything particularly bad though . No , no , we wouldn't , because you can be all emotions at all times and that's okay . Yes , I know what you mean by good , of course . Calm , happy , green . How do you know about the zones , ken ?
Your house in like a ridge is at zones of regulation chart in the kitchen that you guys used to change daily .
With all our little pictures on it . I think I've spoken about it on the pod before , actually , but yet had all our little pictures on it , even had the dogs on it , and we all were just checking in all the time . Kane obviously didn't live in Lightning Ridge , so he had a cameo appearance .
His would come out of the drawer when he was visiting and we'd stick him on Great fun , and it got us all aware , which is so great . Now , if I woke up one day , kane , and I decided I don't want to work with kids anymore , what else could I do ?
We could work with aged care , like the elderly .
The elderly .
Yeah , it's fine , that's a good work , yeah that's good Stroke people , or people that have had stroke Rehab yeah yeah , yeah .
What do I always say when I'm missing you ? I'm like I want to come work with you On the mines . Yeah , whatever you're doing the mines To work , back to work , back to work . Work is typically the name . Yeah , well , you've done a great job .
Yeah , I think it would be the perfect segue , because I realised we didn't do any introduction about you other than that you're my boyfriend and there's way more .
People , everyone .
I think , yeah , we didn't . We'd learned nothing about you . So please enlighten the listeners about you . Where did you grow up ? What do you do for work ? How was school for you ? Let me know .
I grew up in a little town called Tamworth in country New South Wales . Where were you born , Born in Dubbo oh Dub .
Vegas .
Dub Vegas , a beautiful part of the world . Some would say God's country , some would say Not all Lived in Tamworth for 27 years in my life , Become a dropped out of school in New Year 11 . Got the apprenticeship when I was 20 years old as a diesel mechanic . Where did you work before you were a diesel mechanic ?
I was more so just emphasizing that it's cool that you worked at Kmart for so long . Yeah , pretty cool , place Pretty cool dude yeah , pretty cool , cool place for a cool dude .
And then , since then , moved to Newcastle , where I met the lovely Holly , the OT . What , oh my gosh , she sounds so cool .
The crowd goes wow .
And then from there got into the mines in Newcastle and was there for a year and a half and then decided to chase Holly over to WA Smelly .
If our families are listening . This was Kane's idea no .
Obviously , the opportunity for working in WA is very good for my occupation . So , yeah , we decided to snap to that and come over for a couple of years .
And here we are .
And here we are speaking of occupation . Yeah .
What is your occupation ?
I am a plant mechanic , yes , but I'm dual qualified as a heavy diesel mechanic as well .
Incredible . Very hard work , very physical work , very physical work , very dirty work .
It is very dirty .
You are filthy all the time , love it , which is why I'm glad you work away . No offense , because now my sheets and our sheet , we can have white sheets , we can have white sheets , although I can't because my fake tan goes on them anyway , so the problem is not completely avoided . But yes , very hard work and you're very hard worker . Unchop , unchop , unchop .
If anyone listens to , we mean well , we are totally flogging out of them . One of the other questions from our listeners was how did we meet ? I'll leave this one up to you .
We met on a little dating platform called Tinder .
It's such a diplomatic way of putting it A little dating platform . We confessed our love to each other . We did and I love it first swipe , as they say .
Hey , that was a good one .
It's definitely not original . Yeah , Ah , thinking of occupations came . Do you have any other occupations ? And if you say you know OT as well as you do say you do , you'll be able to answer this Just going to the gym and occupation . Yeah , it is , he's good , that's all .
I got .
That's all you got .
Traveling yes . Going to the beach yes . Riding our bikes one it could be . Yeah , you like to do that ?
Yeah , Well that's all I got . You're a pretty cruisey guy .
I am yes .
Now , cain , I put a story up on my question box asking the listeners to send in any random questions they had for you , and we had a few come in . We also had a lot of my friends and family just absolutely rousing me , but that's okay . So if you would like to participate , I'm going to give you some rapid fire questions .
Let's go , let's do it .
Alrighty . Question number one was how do you put up with Holly ? She seems like hard work and before you answer that , guess who it came from .
The tough one , alice .
No , another cousin though , emily . Yeah , my family think I'm annoying .
Anyway , answer that question You're not hard work . Oh , that's nuts , you're very cruisey , very easygoing Love life Okay , everyone has their days some more than others .
Yeah , you are a bit annoying to me . I'm a person , I am . We're just annoying together . Yeah , um , yeah , take that Emily . Ah , yeah , um . Next question that came in , and this is a funny one . And have you noticed any of your own neurodivergent quirks ? Since dating Holly and learning about OT , I've always .
Tude my fingernails .
Yes , and have you , did you know , like sort of why you chewed your fingernails ? No , no .
Um , I've done since I was a little kid , mm-hmm , um . So that's something that I've picked up and other things I do . I tap my fingers to random beats when I try and explain a story . I Map out my story with my fingers , thinking that people can you're very handsy with it , with an explanation , aren't you ?
You're very , um , very much move your hands around . I do any others . It's a few that we've always spoken about . We always love like we're both , you know , probably neurodivergent ourselves . We're both a little bit ADHD . I don't mean that lightly , by the way , I'm not just dismissing that but we've definitely had some conversations about this .
We have , I feel like there's , there's others of yours . I just can't get them off the top of my head .
Um .
You do love learning about regulation stuff . So don't you you do of learning about , like , how I regulate and how you regulate and how it's different ? And yeah , it's always , it's always good , fun chats , but I can't think of anything else you do . You're very uh fidgety . In like right now you are rocking .
You are seeking that vestibular input , so you're a little bit nervous . I told you don't have to be , but you have just not stopped rocking . Yeah , so you definitely a fidgeter . Um , I chew a lot .
You do chew a lot . Yes , plastic there's not always chewy like bits of plastic . You always catch me with bits of plastic in my mouth .
Do you think that that is a regulation thing or do you think it's a that quit smoking thing ? Came as a smoker for a long time and he quit , which was incredible to do like it was very hard for you and you used gum to supplement chewing , just to supplement smoking , sorry .
Um , I've always chewed , you've always chewed , yeah , chewer , from 93 .
True from way back yeah chomping on the , on the plastic plastic . No , it's trying to think of like a kid thing . I couldn't think of anything . I don't really know anything about kids , so Is that your job ? No , not me .
Not me . Fake it , so you make it baby . That's what .
I'd say Um , yeah , cool . Uh , another question that came in , Um , and I'm just gonna get my phone just so I can read this one out Properly . I just don't want to miss it . It was quite a nice one , um , it says what is it like Dating a world famous , recognizable on the street podcaster ? And that one came in from Hooli Hooli Gotham .
Uh , don't , don't know who that is . Um , anything to say to that one ?
You have been recognized a few times while I've been out .
Um stop . When I said that , I was like , oh no , no , it's gonna sound like I was trying to bring that up , but I have . I have actually been recognized , and it's very , very surreal . It is not recognized , that's not the right word .
Well , it's not like to see from where you've were to where you are now and how big your community is .
Yeah , from the , from the dumps to the guy , yeah , yeah , it's really cool . And did you know I was world famous ? I don't know if we've spoken about this , but no , I didn't realize you were world famous . I have an assistant listener and if you are this listener , I'd love you to hit the dm .
I have a consistent listener from Finland , from Finland , from Finland . They've listened to probably like 80% of the episodes and I know you're thinking like holy , that's so stalkerish . I love stats and I look at my stats . I look at where all you guys are located . I know what cities you come from .
I know if you listen to the full episode or if you switch me off after 10 minutes , half the time , I don't blame you . But there's , yeah , consistent Finland . Uh , listen up , finish , finland , finlandie , finish , I don't know . I'm asking you .
I'm asking you .
Someone from Finland .
You breaking free right there , I'm breaking free , sorry , why .
What is the context of seeing that ?
Out of our borders , oh of course , of course .
I was thinking like this would be a good time if we had , like a producer that could then , you know , have the big podcast like yeah , stop for me , do this , that'd be great . Some hella sport , some hella sport .
Dior , we love Dior , davo , davo , tom Tom's .
Yeah , great , I don't know where we've gotten sidetracked . Oh yeah , international listeners . What's it like it's ?
cool , famous . It's great . I'm unrecognisable now .
Yeah , thanks , Bev . Yeah , Another question that came in was and I bet you can guess who this was from as well when are you going to propose to Holly ?
I have no idea who it was . There's probably many people that would ask that question .
It could have come through from multiple people . In fact , it did come through twice , but that's okay .
Well , I'll keep you all guessing and I'll keep Holly guessing as well .
I'm waiting . I know It'll happen when it happens .
Exactly .
Whatever , another question that came in , which I thought was a nice one that you could answer , was what is your favorite thing about me ?
Your personality , your . Whenever you walk into a room , it always seems to lighten up .
Oh , I thought so . Yeah , You've been so confused .
That's the count . No , I thought bubbly personality is probably the best thing about you .
God , I can't wait to play this to the grandkids one day . That's very kind , dar . Thanks so much Pleasure . There's one last question that came through , which could be our last one to wrap this up , and it was is the Holly that we get on the podcast the same as the Holly that is like in real life , 100% ?
She's probably more bubbly and over the top and full of joy in real life . I don't know if that's a compliment .
Everyone's like , oh God , she's too much on the podcast , and now you're saying she's worse .
No , she's not worse , she's amazing . You are amazing .
I literally thought this whole podcast was going to be us like taking the piece out of each other , but you've just been very kind , so I guess I should say kind of thing about you . You probably should . Yeah , I like him , mustache . Thanks , that's all I got . I'll take it . Nah , you're a cool dude , you know . I love you , thank you .
Well , that's sort of all the questions I had for you . We did a little bit of OT , a little bit of not OT . What are the plans for the future ? Kane ? Where are we going ? What are we doing ?
I wouldn't mind going north from here , going north , hitting the road again . Xmouth , just keep doing our lap around and see where we go . Might get back in your chest . Well , we don't want to be here for a bit . Let's go overseas who ?
knows Love that If any of our family have listened in , they're like oh .
God , there's a bug coming up . No , we'll take it as it comes . We'll see what happens .
See what happens and hopefully this podcast can make us an income so we don't have to worry .
Listening guys .
Oh , this is a good one . I know I just said we're going to wrap it up , but if there was someone that was listening to this episode and they were thinking they might like to reach out , 2024 news coming around .
They want to sponsor the podcast , support a diehard OT out , and you had to give them a pitch , and your pitch was what was going to sell them over whether or not they will sponsor me or not . What would your pitch be ?
You're looking to sponsor someone . I have the person for you . All the OT and all the OT podcast is your person . She is charismatic oh big word . She is amazing . She's bubbly . She is the best OT I know . I think I only have two OTs .
Hey , if you listen to me , he doesn't mean that you think you're good OT too .
She'd be the best person for your role . I don't know .
They're really great . I heard the ding-dings coming in . They want me , they do . Thanks , mate , appreciate that . Okay , we're going to wrap this up now . You've been an absolute trooper , thank you . Thanks for coming on . Thank you for having me . I hope that people find joy about it . Whoa , whoa , whoa , rewind , whoa .
I hope that people found joy out of this episode and enjoyed getting to know you , and if you guys want him back on , let me know and you can come back on again . Please don't . No , look , it wouldn't be Kane's first choice to be on a podcast , but you've been a trooper , thank you . Now , kane , we end all episodes the exact same way .
We're going to pretend this is the outro and the episode has ended . I've said goodbye to you and then you just happen to be back in the room for a Fun fact . That was amazing . Thanks , I actually hit that note really well , you did . I'm a singer , you are . What have you got for me , kane ? Fun fact .
I don't know the exact stats . Oh , he's winging it .
We love it . I'm going to bring it the best fun facts on this podcast are the ones that probably aren't true , so don't worry .
So there are 2.8 million people in Western Australia .
Oh yeah , this is a good one .
Yeah , and 2.2 of them live in Perth . I think that's wrong ?
I think it was , wasn't it 1.6 live in Perth , or was it more ? Oh , yeah , because it's 600,000 people live in the rest of WA . Is that it ? Yeah , so you're right ? I think so . So I just jumped the gun , ruined your fun fact , just to be wrong . Yeah , and if that doesn't explain our relationship to a T , are you confirming the fun fact ?
I am . So there's 2.7 people , 2.7 million people in WA .
Uh-huh , 2.1 in Perth . Great , so you were right . I was wrong . Yeah , I was wrong .
I said 2.8 and 2.2 .
Tadda potato , tomato , tomato , that's very true . Nachos , nachos . I just said them the same Goal we're rambling . It happens , guys . It even happens when Kane's or it's not just me . Thank you so much , everyone that has listened in . This will be the second , last episode for 2023 . I'll have one more episode for you guys . Apologies for the big delay .
We've just been busy livin' , livin' , lovin' , prospering . Live loud , live proud . I will have an episode for you guys so soon , but thank you so much for tuning in . See you Bye .
