429. Bartolome de Las Casas

Dominican friar and Catholic priest Bartolomé de Las Casas (1484-1566), the Bishop of Chiapas, Mexico, tried to end Mexico’s Encomienda system in which those who owned land could also take the people living there in forced labor.
