So you asked for this topic on HIListically Speaking, and I'm listening. It is something we have not really dived into just itself, and that is Ayurveda.

So we're doing that today and I have the perfect person to support this conversation, dr Shivani Gupta, and she is an Ayurvedic practitioner expert in blending the Eastern wisdom and the Western science to help our bodies find balance. Shivani, it is about time right, absolutely. When we talk about the Eastern and the Western, it really says we're bringing that here.

We're seeing more people really diving into that, and I know from your own experience of somebody who grew up both in the States and has roots to India. This was an easier path for you to get into, but you do have your own story. Dr. Shivani Gupta: Yes for sure. Dr. Shivani Gupta: It's been a long journey to finding the Dr. Shivani Gupta: system that finally worked for me.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: And I grew up in Houston, texas, a typical Dr. Shivani Gupta: immigrant child who was lucky enough to Dr. Shivani Gupta: start going to India to see all my Dr. Shivani Gupta: grandparents and cousins when I was about Dr. Shivani Gupta: five years old. Dr. Shivani Gupta: But the punishment to that was from five Dr. Shivani Gupta: till 20. Dr. Shivani Gupta: Every time I went to India I would get Dr. Shivani Gupta: disastrously sick.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: One bite of chutney or one bite of potatoes Dr. Shivani Gupta: on the street, with all the fun street Dr. Shivani Gupta: foods we had, and I would have Montezuma's Dr. Shivani Gupta: revenge, india style, and it was horrible. Dr. Shivani Gupta: And so I just grew up thinking, wow, Dr. Shivani Gupta: everyone else has an immune system, Dr. Shivani Gupta: everyone else can eat foods, everyone else Dr. Shivani Gupta: can go to a party and not get sick.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: But I somehow was born with this defective Dr. Shivani Gupta: template and I'm always sick. Dr. Shivani Gupta: And so, fast forward. Dr. Shivani Gupta: It took me till college to learn about and Dr. Shivani Gupta: realize there's this thing called gut Dr. Shivani Gupta: health, there's this thing called a gut Dr. Shivani Gupta: microbiome and we have to have probiotics. Dr. Shivani Gupta: And so one time I was in India in college, Dr. Shivani Gupta: disastrously sick.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: They thought they'd have to hospitalize me Dr. Shivani Gupta: and we went to this doctor's office, dr Dr. Shivani Gupta: Gupta, and we were sitting in his office Dr. Shivani Gupta: and he goes okay, here's your solution, Dr. Shivani Gupta: here's your prescription. Dr. Shivani Gupta: And then here's the 11 medicines you can Dr. Shivani Gupta: take to get better.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: And there's this voice that screamed out of Dr. Shivani Gupta: me and said no, we're not doing this again. Dr. Shivani Gupta: And so I looked at the doctor and I said Dr. Shivani Gupta: can we dumb that antibiotics down a couple Dr. Shivani Gupta: notches? Dr. Shivani Gupta: Can we not explode my gut like you do every Dr. Shivani Gupta: year here? Dr. Shivani Gupta: And then, what are those other 11 meds for? Dr. Shivani Gupta: Oh, they're for symptoms.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: No, not doing that. Dr. Shivani Gupta: And where's the probiotic? Dr. Shivani Gupta: And I remember my parents getting so mad Dr. Shivani Gupta: like you don't talk to an Indian doctor Dr. Shivani Gupta: that way. Dr. Shivani Gupta: I said you know what? Dr. Shivani Gupta: This is not working anymore. Dr. Shivani Gupta: We have to go find a new way and I have to Dr. Shivani Gupta: figure this out. Dr. Shivani Gupta: We're in the land of yoga and Ayurveda.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: There must be other options here. Dr. Shivani Gupta: And so I went on a quest through India and Dr. Shivani Gupta: I went to each center, sat at the guru's Dr. Shivani Gupta: feet and just hoped for help, and Dr. Shivani Gupta: eventually I got my answers. Dr. Shivani Gupta: I saw tons of people getting healed.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: I learned all about gut health, the Dr. Shivani Gupta: Ayurveda way, and I rebuilt my gut health Dr. Shivani Gupta: and my immune system and I thought, wow, Dr. Shivani Gupta: why is the whole world not living like this? Dr. Shivani Gupta: This is incredible. Dr. Shivani Gupta: This is the path to health, and I realized Dr. Shivani Gupta: Ayurveda is just really bad at simplifying Dr. Shivani Gupta: things into a way that we in the West can Dr. Shivani Gupta: use.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: So that was my mission 20 years ago and I'm Dr. Shivani Gupta: still doing that. Dr. Shivani Gupta: I'm still pulling Ayurvedic tools into the Dr. Shivani Gupta: modern day times in a simpler way that we Dr. Shivani Gupta: can use to get the results, so that I can Dr. Shivani Gupta: teach everyone the lifestyle that, if we Dr. Shivani Gupta: lead it and live it, we can have that Dr. Shivani Gupta: vibrant health that we all deserve. If we lead it and live it and see.

That's the kind of doctor I love working with when I'm working in the holistic health field and any integrative medicine, finding doctors who are in the functional medicine space or integrative space. I align with that more, not just because it's part of my business, but because I have to be my own healthcare advocate. You know, I have to be my own healthcare advocate, just like you are your own healthcare advocate.

And you mentioned something that was really interesting to me, shivani, and it's the point that when you were seeing the doctor and you're getting all of these prescriptions prescribed, you had a voice which for a very long time I don't think, especially in this country you didn't talk back to your doctor, you didn't ask questions and there was almost a manipulation. That happened. Like I know more and I'm not saying doctors don't know more, but who knows the body and your body better than self?

Dr. Shivani Gupta: Correct and that was a pattern through my Dr. Shivani Gupta: whole life was you go to the expert or the Dr. Shivani Gupta: doctor. Dr. Shivani Gupta: They always give you a prescription, you Dr. Shivani Gupta: take it and you assume it's good for you, Dr. Shivani Gupta: and even until I'd say a decade ago that Dr. Shivani Gupta: was still true I'd still go to the doctor.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: I went to orthopedics and I was like I have Dr. Shivani Gupta: knee pain, I have plantar fasciitis, and Dr. Shivani Gupta: they said take NSAIDs 24, seven for 10 days. Dr. Shivani Gupta: So I listened because that's the expert. Dr. Shivani Gupta: And then all of a sudden, I'd have a Dr. Shivani Gupta: punishment called stomach aches and I'd say Dr. Shivani Gupta: wait a minute, you guys gave me a problem. Dr. Shivani Gupta: That is unacceptable to me.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: I can't have anyone impact my gut.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: I have to find a different way to do this, Dr. Shivani Gupta: and so being sovereign and being an Dr. Shivani Gupta: advocate for yourself in your own care is Dr. Shivani Gupta: something I'm very passionate about, Dr. Shivani Gupta: because if we don't learn to really Dr. Shivani Gupta: understand our health, be intuitive with it, Dr. Shivani Gupta: understand our own bio-individual body, our Dr. Shivani Gupta: own mind-body constitution, then we will be

Dr. Shivani Gupta: at the whim of others. Dr. Shivani Gupta: And, from what I've learned, not every tool Dr. Shivani Gupta: in the toolkit of Western medicine works Dr. Shivani Gupta: for my body.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: I really have to guard my health carefully, Dr. Shivani Gupta: and so what's interesting is I'm married Dr. Shivani Gupta: into an all Western medicine family and Dr. Shivani Gupta: everyone around me is like there's a pill Dr. Shivani Gupta: for that and I'm like, no, no, no, no, Dr. Shivani Gupta: there's a herb for that. Dr. Shivani Gupta: Actually, there's a spice for that and Dr. Shivani Gupta: there's a tea for that.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: So if you want that toolkit, I am always Dr. Shivani Gupta: using that toolkit. So how do you, how do you support each other on that journey? If you're having the Western and the Eastern, is it really just being open to having the conversations? Because obviously, maybe for somebody there is a pill for that and maybe for another person there is an herb for that. So how do you come together and integrate, using that word to really support bio-individuality?

Dr. Shivani Gupta: You know, it's been really interesting Dr. Shivani Gupta: because I'm married to a Western MD doctor Dr. Shivani Gupta: and my viewpoints are getting more Eastern Dr. Shivani Gupta: and holistic year by year. Dr. Shivani Gupta: It's almost like I as I vintage, as I Dr. Shivani Gupta: become more and more.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: It's almost like the strength of it there's Dr. Shivani Gupta: a word for that where I'm becoming less Dr. Shivani Gupta: flexible about the strength of my Dr. Shivani Gupta: convictions. Dr. Shivani Gupta: Let's say it that way. Dr. Shivani Gupta: And so I think it's really about mutual Dr. Shivani Gupta: respect. Dr. Shivani Gupta: My husband looks at me and he's like, wow, Dr. Shivani Gupta: it's hinkabani as opposed to Pepto-Bismol.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: And I'm like, absolutely, why don't we Dr. Shivani Gupta: watch the result? Dr. Shivani Gupta: Why don't we try my wife and just see? Dr. Shivani Gupta: And he's like, oh, okay, fine, that's fine, Dr. Shivani Gupta: we can do that from now on. Dr. Shivani Gupta: Or turmeric did that to that patient.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: I'm like, yeah, and so it's just a slow Dr. Shivani Gupta: evolution, and I think Western medicine has Dr. Shivani Gupta: opened their minds a lot since COVID, which Dr. Shivani Gupta: is great. Dr. Shivani Gupta: Since the pandemic, things have changed. Dr. Shivani Gupta: A lot of mindsets are like look, both are Dr. Shivani Gupta: wonderful, we need both.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: In catastrophic situations, when someone Dr. Shivani Gupta: needs surgery gosh do I love Western Dr. Shivani Gupta: medicine all day long. Dr. Shivani Gupta: When something's really serious, I love it, Dr. Shivani Gupta: and when something becomes a chronic issue Dr. Shivani Gupta: or a lifestyle issue or we have an herbal Dr. Shivani Gupta: solution, I love that too. Dr. Shivani Gupta: So I'm very much a meeting in the middle.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: I think that's where functional medicine is Dr. Shivani Gupta: actually very powerful sometimes, because Dr. Shivani Gupta: functional medicine is really pulling Dr. Shivani Gupta: integrative and all the different Dr. Shivani Gupta: subspecialties out of the integrative Dr. Shivani Gupta: medicine specialties and meeting it with Dr. Shivani Gupta: functional medicine mindsets and finding Dr. Shivani Gupta: that root cause solution.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: So to me every solution works. It's just about when and where Exactly and coming from a doctor and hearing those words from an MD are really powerful, because I think it is that mutual respect, knowing that we're so fortunate to have modern medicine when we need it and we're also fortunate to know that we can go back to the roots of really what medicine was based on right.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: True, and in my in-law family I'm a PhD and Dr. Shivani Gupta: they're all MDs and surgeons, and so it's Dr. Shivani Gupta: really interesting because I'm coming at it Dr. Shivani Gupta: with this incredible knowledge from Dr. Shivani Gupta: Ayurveda and they're all Indian.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: So they're like yeah, I know it works, but Dr. Shivani Gupta: I was trained in this other way and so we Dr. Shivani Gupta: get to always meet in the middle, which is Dr. Shivani Gupta: honestly a good metaphor example for what Dr. Shivani Gupta: we're doing in the rest of the country is Dr. Shivani Gupta: honestly a good metaphor example for what Dr. Shivani Gupta: we're doing in the rest of the country.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: Yoga is a sister science to Ayurveda, so Dr. Shivani Gupta: all I'm really bringing to you is how to Dr. Shivani Gupta: take that wisdom of yoga and Ayurveda and Dr. Shivani Gupta: integrate it in as the lifestyle to prevent Dr. Shivani Gupta: you from developing those chronic metabolic Dr. Shivani Gupta: diseases in the first place. Dr. Shivani Gupta: And then I say look when something's Dr. Shivani Gupta: serious, we have those incredible Dr. Shivani Gupta: practitioners.

Yeah, great, everybody works together to help each other out out, but we have to help ourselves first. So I want to touch on turmeric, because you did bring it up. That's really what you're known for, and the anti-inflammatory ways and turmeric is. We hear all about it.

There's so many videos out there now people doing things with turmeric, which is great, but understanding what people are doing, I think, is really important, why this conversation is so vital, so that we can truly understand the power of this plant, this spice, and what it can really do for us. So let's go there. Dr. Shivani Gupta: Sure. Dr. Shivani Gupta: So my entire PhD dissertation was on Dr. Shivani Gupta: turmeric.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: I was doing my master's degree in Ayurvedic Dr. Shivani Gupta: lifestyle and I learned about all the herbs Dr. Shivani Gupta: and spices and so, as I was sitting in Dr. Shivani Gupta: class, the teacher was teaching us okay, Dr. Shivani Gupta: turmeric, does this. Dr. Shivani Gupta: Ginger, does that. Dr. Shivani Gupta: Ashwagandha, does this.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: In the Indian household, you use your Dr. Shivani Gupta: coriander, your red chili spice, your gada Dr. Shivani Gupta: masala that has black pepper in this spice Dr. Shivani Gupta: bowl, basically the spice kit that we use Dr. Shivani Gupta: every day. Dr. Shivani Gupta: Here are all the benefits, and as I was Dr. Shivani Gupta: sitting there, I thought, wow, every spice Dr. Shivani Gupta: you're talking about does what superfoods Dr. Shivani Gupta: do?

Dr. Shivani Gupta: We eat a lot of superfoods in the West Dr. Shivani Gupta: because they're anti-inflammatory, they're Dr. Shivani Gupta: antioxidant and they're immune, supportive, Dr. Shivani Gupta: high vitamin C and these kinds of things. Dr. Shivani Gupta: But what you're saying is these spices have Dr. Shivani Gupta: the same power, the same abilities, and we Dr. Shivani Gupta: don't use them.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: We just in America, use, like salt, black Dr. Shivani Gupta: pepper, basil, oregano. Dr. Shivani Gupta: People keep it really simple, and so my Dr. Shivani Gupta: dream is really to bring those spices back Dr. Shivani Gupta: into our life, whether we use them in our Dr. Shivani Gupta: food or we take them in supplement form, to Dr. Shivani Gupta: get those superfood benefits.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: And so when he, with a teacher, mentioned Dr. Shivani Gupta: tumeric, I thought, wow, everything you're Dr. Shivani Gupta: saying tumeric does. Dr. Shivani Gupta: My family history deals with.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: My family history is all diabetic, heart Dr. Shivani Gupta: disease, parkinson's, really bad and so Dr. Shivani Gupta: every time I went to India I thought how am Dr. Shivani Gupta: I going to prevent this from happening in Dr. Shivani Gupta: my generation, with my siblings, to my Dr. Shivani Gupta: parents? Dr. Shivani Gupta: And so turmeric, to me, is one of the most Dr. Shivani Gupta: powerful superfoods that we have on earth.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: It is anti-inflammatory and there's over Dr. Shivani Gupta: 17,000 studies in PubMed, because there's Dr. Shivani Gupta: so much science going behind, why turmeric Dr. Shivani Gupta: is so effective as an anti-inflammatory. Dr. Shivani Gupta: The medical community, the scientific Dr. Shivani Gupta: community, is fascinated because it Dr. Shivani Gupta: approaches inflammation from so many Dr. Shivani Gupta: different pathways.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: So when people are inflamed, what I've seen Dr. Shivani Gupta: anecdotally for the last 10 years working Dr. Shivani Gupta: with people is it helps the big issues, Dr. Shivani Gupta: then the medium issues and then the small Dr. Shivani Gupta: issues. Dr. Shivani Gupta: So people will say my chronic joint pain, Dr. Shivani Gupta: you're holding me pain-free.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: We're seeing orthopedics say, wow, you've Dr. Shivani Gupta: got our pain patients feeling much better. Dr. Shivani Gupta: They're more flexible, more mobile, more Dr. Shivani Gupta: able to move their body and ambulate. Dr. Shivani Gupta: We've got a lot of other of the Dr. Shivani Gupta: subspecialties saying, wow, you're winning Dr. Shivani Gupta: at inflammation. Dr. Shivani Gupta: This is wonderful.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: So it's anti-inflammatory, it's antioxidant, Dr. Shivani Gupta: which we know oxidation is causing aging Dr. Shivani Gupta: and rusting in our system over time. Dr. Shivani Gupta: We know that it's antiviral, antibacterial Dr. Shivani Gupta: and antifungal and so, based on my immune Dr. Shivani Gupta: system growing up, I really like the immune Dr. Shivani Gupta: modulating aspects of turmeric because I Dr. Shivani Gupta: need it.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: It's my defense system against all that Dr. Shivani Gupta: comes. Dr. Shivani Gupta: We also know that turmeric is anti-candida, Dr. Shivani Gupta: anti-h pylori, anti-obesity. Dr. Shivani Gupta: We know it's this incredible janitor. Dr. Shivani Gupta: It comes through and just cleans out all Dr. Shivani Gupta: the cells that don't belong in our bodies.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: So there's a process called cell apoptosis, Dr. Shivani Gupta: where our cells will die off if they don't Dr. Shivani Gupta: belong in us anymore. Dr. Shivani Gupta: If they hang around, oftentimes they turn Dr. Shivani Gupta: into zombie cells, they start running into Dr. Shivani Gupta: everything and causing damage. Dr. Shivani Gupta: And so turmeric is this ultimate janitor.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: It just goes in there and cleans house so Dr. Shivani Gupta: the body can be efficient and clean and Dr. Shivani Gupta: work. Dr. Shivani Gupta: And so I love that turmeric can have such a Dr. Shivani Gupta: metabolic support. Dr. Shivani Gupta: It's supportive of the gut membrane, the Dr. Shivani Gupta: gut microbiome, which is huge again for Dr. Shivani Gupta: immune system and inflammation overall.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: And then it's this powerful Dr. Shivani Gupta: anti-inflammatory which we know is an Dr. Shivani Gupta: anti-aging support. Dr. Shivani Gupta: But also it's going to help us when it Dr. Shivani Gupta: comes to chronic metabolic disease. Coming in like a janitor. I mean, giving the visual is so powerful. Being able to see it like that, like not just being told oh there's another spice, oh there's another plant medicine, oh there's another this, and this is why it does that.

Giving the visual definitely takes it up a level right that it's able to do all that. But here's the why and here's the how. In simple terms, because not everybody is going to look into the medicine, the science behind it. They want solutions, right? I don't think I've ever heard anybody explain it like that. I love that With turmeric, does it have to be in its purest form? You see them selling turmeric at the stores. Now the root. But there's also essential oils.

There's also the powders that you can buy as a spice to put in your spice rack. Is there one that's more powerful? Dr. Shivani Gupta: Sure, so we're also bio-individual. Dr. Shivani Gupta: The way I like to think of it is in ancient Dr. Shivani Gupta: India they didn't use the root much. Dr. Shivani Gupta: The root turmeric is beneficial but it's Dr. Shivani Gupta: not as bioavailable.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: Now when you take that root and you dry it Dr. Shivani Gupta: into the spice turmeric, you've really Dr. Shivani Gupta: concentrated it down. Dr. Shivani Gupta: It's like the difference between taking Dr. Shivani Gupta: basil, for example, and then the spice. Dr. Shivani Gupta: It's going to be way stronger onions as a Dr. Shivani Gupta: spice.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: So when you take turmeric as a spice and Dr. Shivani Gupta: use it in your cooking, it's important to Dr. Shivani Gupta: do so with black pepper or a healthy fat to Dr. Shivani Gupta: increase that absorption, because we know Dr. Shivani Gupta: black pepper alone increases that Dr. Shivani Gupta: absorption by 2000%. Dr. Shivani Gupta: We know with healthy fat increases the Dr. Shivani Gupta: absorption significantly as well.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: The problem is in the Western diet most Dr. Shivani Gupta: people aren't eating that much turmeric, Dr. Shivani Gupta: even though they know the benefits, or Dr. Shivani Gupta: they're having it in interesting ways, like Dr. Shivani Gupta: orange juice now will have turmeric, but Dr. Shivani Gupta: you're giving yourself sugar to give Dr. Shivani Gupta: yourself turmeric, so you're inflaming to Dr. Shivani Gupta: de-inflame, or a skinny latte.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: We don't want a skinny latte, we want a Dr. Shivani Gupta: full fat latte. Dr. Shivani Gupta: It was always turmeric with whole milk to Dr. Shivani Gupta: get those benefits. Dr. Shivani Gupta: Oh like a chai. Dr. Shivani Gupta: Exactly, want a full fat latte, it was Dr. Shivani Gupta: always turmeric with whole milk to get Dr. Shivani Gupta: those benefits. Dr. Shivani Gupta: Oh, like a chai, exactly Like a chai tea Dr. Shivani Gupta: latte.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: Don't make it skinny then, because you need Dr. Shivani Gupta: that fat to increase that absorption. Dr. Shivani Gupta: And then, finally, when we take turmeric, Dr. Shivani Gupta: the plant, only 3% of it is the Dr. Shivani Gupta: curcuminoids, and of those curcuminoids, Dr. Shivani Gupta: curcumin is the most effective at reducing Dr. Shivani Gupta: inflammation, and so that's where so much Dr. Shivani Gupta: science has been invested in.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: How do we create extracts out of turmeric Dr. Shivani Gupta: to give people just that piece that's the Dr. Shivani Gupta: most effective at inflammation? Dr. Shivani Gupta: And so there's a lot of games played in the Dr. Shivani Gupta: supplement world. Dr. Shivani Gupta: Right now. Dr. Shivani Gupta: A lot of supplements are made just so Dr. Shivani Gupta: they're highly profitable.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: They're made because people just want to Dr. Shivani Gupta: create something that people will buy. Dr. Shivani Gupta: In my case, after my PhD was done, I wanted Dr. Shivani Gupta: to prove my point.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: I wanted to prove to orthopedics that we Dr. Shivani Gupta: can get people out of pain without harming Dr. Shivani Gupta: their gut, because in my case, when I hurt Dr. Shivani Gupta: myself at the gym or anywhere, I cannot Dr. Shivani Gupta: take NSAIDs high dose over a long period of Dr. Shivani Gupta: time. Dr. Shivani Gupta: I'm one of those people, and there's a lot Dr. Shivani Gupta: of people who cannot take NSAIDs all the Dr. Shivani Gupta: time.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: We know it can cause a GI bleed, we know it Dr. Shivani Gupta: can cause damage to the kidneys, and so I Dr. Shivani Gupta: created a turmeric purely to show Dr. Shivani Gupta: orthopedics. Dr. Shivani Gupta: We can keep people out of pain. Dr. Shivani Gupta: And then now I get to teach about the Dr. Shivani Gupta: preventive aspects of turmeric to everybody, Dr. Shivani Gupta: to show everyone.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: Look, when you extract it at the right Dr. Shivani Gupta: dosage, at the right potency, standardized Dr. Shivani Gupta: to the highest levels, now we're talking Dr. Shivani Gupta: about a significant reduction in Dr. Shivani Gupta: inflammation. So can you just go to the store and buy turmeric in the spice aisle?

Or, if you do use essential oils, can you just use it because it's so constant, it's so distilled, and pair it with, maybe, distilled black pepper in an essential oil. Are those still options? Are you still going to get the potency? Dr. Shivani Gupta: Absolutely you will. Dr. Shivani Gupta: Anytime we're using the whole plant, it's Dr. Shivani Gupta: going to have benefits. Dr. Shivani Gupta: It's just about what potency level you need Dr. Shivani Gupta: for you to feel the difference.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: A lot of times I meet people who are like, Dr. Shivani Gupta: yeah, I take my tumor supplement. Dr. Shivani Gupta: I've never felt anything. Dr. Shivani Gupta: Hey, change it up, try someone else. Dr. Shivani Gupta: There's a lot of great brands out there. Dr. Shivani Gupta: I'm not the only one who created one, I'm Dr. Shivani Gupta: just obsessive and I made one that I wanted Dr. Shivani Gupta: to prove my point. Dr. Shivani Gupta: Essential oils are incredible.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: We love essential oils. Dr. Shivani Gupta: We love teas out of Ayurveda. Dr. Shivani Gupta: The more natural we can go, the better. Dr. Shivani Gupta: The problem is, nowadays we're so inflamed Dr. Shivani Gupta: as a society. Dr. Shivani Gupta: We have so much chronic, low-grade, Dr. Shivani Gupta: persistent inflammation running rampant. Dr. Shivani Gupta: We have these kind of forest fires going Dr. Shivani Gupta: due to different issues.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: It could be toxins, it could be different Dr. Shivani Gupta: traumas. Dr. Shivani Gupta: We're in the sympathetic mode and we're in Dr. Shivani Gupta: fight or flight. Dr. Shivani Gupta: We're in high stress so much of the time. Dr. Shivani Gupta: Plus, we have a lot of oxidative stressors, Dr. Shivani Gupta: and so that's where I think supplementation Dr. Shivani Gupta: can really help people.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: But then move back into your maintenance Dr. Shivani Gupta: dose and use the oils, use the spice, use Dr. Shivani Gupta: the foods to stay healthy overall. Yeah, love that. And you mentioned you have your own line. Dr. Shivani Gupta: Sure. Dr. Shivani Gupta: So Ayurveda is an entire system of health, Dr. Shivani Gupta: healing and medicine from India that's Dr. Shivani Gupta: 5,000 years old and this system is actually Dr. Shivani Gupta: a way of life, so it's an entire way of Dr. Shivani Gupta: life we can all live each and every day. Dr. Shivani Gupta: It encompasses some of my favorite pillars Dr. Shivani Gupta: of health.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: It actually encompasses so much more, but Dr. Shivani Gupta: the six pillars I teach are circadian Dr. Shivani Gupta: rhythm, which is a concept that came out of Dr. Shivani Gupta: Ayurveda. Dr. Shivani Gupta: That just means we should live according to Dr. Shivani Gupta: nature's clock, and when we're off nature's Dr. Shivani Gupta: clock we're causing dis-ease because we're Dr. Shivani Gupta: living against it.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: Then we teach a lot about Sattvic diet, the Dr. Shivani Gupta: Sattvic lifestyle, living this yogic Dr. Shivani Gupta: lifestyle, and eating with a lot of Dr. Shivani Gupta: intention, eating foods that are nutrient Dr. Shivani Gupta: dense, nutrient variety, that are seasonal Dr. Shivani Gupta: from our circadian clock. Dr. Shivani Gupta: We also teach something called your dosha, Dr. Shivani Gupta: or your mind-body constitution, and how.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: Each of us has our own constitution, and Dr. Shivani Gupta: once we understand if we're more air or Dr. Shivani Gupta: more fire or more earth, we then have a Dr. Shivani Gupta: blueprint for how to live every day. Dr. Shivani Gupta: That applies to everything else we do when Dr. Shivani Gupta: we eat, when we sleep, how we do self-care, Dr. Shivani Gupta: what foods we eat, what spices we use.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: You can really customize down to your Dr. Shivani Gupta: constitution. Dr. Shivani Gupta: So I love doing a dosha quiz on people and Dr. Shivani Gupta: showing them what they are and they're Dr. Shivani Gupta: always like what? Dr. Shivani Gupta: How do you know that?

Dr. Shivani Gupta: And I'm like, oh, I know a lot about you Dr. Shivani Gupta: that let me show you how to adjust and Dr. Shivani Gupta: calibrate to your life moment to moment so Dr. Shivani Gupta: you feel your best. Dr. Shivani Gupta: Then I teach a lot about sleep, because if Dr. Shivani Gupta: we don't sleep, we're going to stay Dr. Shivani Gupta: inflamed and then you're going to need Dr. Shivani Gupta: turmeric forever.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: So if I can just fix your sleep, you can Dr. Shivani Gupta: de-inflame yourself, which would make me Dr. Shivani Gupta: happy. Dr. Shivani Gupta: Then I teach about all the self-care Dr. Shivani Gupta: rituals from Ayurveda that are the daily Dr. Shivani Gupta: rituals. Dr. Shivani Gupta: We call it the daily rhythm you build by Dr. Shivani Gupta: using these self-care rituals that are Dr. Shivani Gupta: detoxing and beneficial for your health.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: And then, finally, my last pillar is super Dr. Shivani Gupta: spices, because I love the spices, I love Dr. Shivani Gupta: tea, I love adaptogens and I want to help Dr. Shivani Gupta: people feel better. Dr. Shivani Gupta: And then I can show you all the lifestyle Dr. Shivani Gupta: stuff you can do. Dr. Shivani Gupta: And a lot of times people work with me for Dr. Shivani Gupta: six weeks.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: They feel better and then they'll fall off Dr. Shivani Gupta: the horse and they'll say I heard my little Dr. Shivani Gupta: Shivani on my shoulder. Dr. Shivani Gupta: Remind me, do self-care. Dr. Shivani Gupta: Pick up a you know, pick up your dry brush, Dr. Shivani Gupta: pick up your tongue scraper. Dr. Shivani Gupta: Start to do tea. Dr. Shivani Gupta: Time is me time.

Do the little things that add up to getting you back on your track and there's so many different things that you can do, like you mentioned, all these pillars. But even if you make one change, you're moving in the right direction, right, and when you fall off the horse you can get back on it. You know we wobble, but we don't fall down kind of like a weeble right, and it's just bouncing back up and realizing that we have the ability to make small changes and small shifts.

So, and one thing that you did mention, that I think a lot of people struggle with and we're seeing this not just those who tune into the show but sleep, like me, with others who might be struggling with sleep. What would be the first thing that you would suggest?

Dr. Shivani Gupta: One big idea I teach people is when we have Dr. Shivani Gupta: children, we usually read all these books Dr. Shivani Gupta: on how to make them sleep, because we need Dr. Shivani Gupta: them to sleep, for us to sleep. Dr. Shivani Gupta: And guess what is one big thing we do for Dr. Shivani Gupta: them? Dr. Shivani Gupta: We set up a nighttime ritual to lead them Dr. Shivani Gupta: to a great us to sleep.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: And guess what is one big thing we do for Dr. Shivani Gupta: them? Dr. Shivani Gupta: We set up a nighttime ritual to lead them Dr. Shivani Gupta: to a great night's sleep. Dr. Shivani Gupta: We close the blinds, we start diffusing Dr. Shivani Gupta: lavender oil, we start playing sleep music, Dr. Shivani Gupta: we do a massage to them. Dr. Shivani Gupta: We make sure they have a nice hot bath.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: Massage them after with lotions, put their Dr. Shivani Gupta: pajamas on, make sure everything's dark. Dr. Shivani Gupta: Lotions, put their pajamas on, make sure Dr. Shivani Gupta: everything's dark. Dr. Shivani Gupta: So everything you've done there is Dr. Shivani Gupta: programming mind and body. Dr. Shivani Gupta: We are going to bed. Dr. Shivani Gupta: Right, what do we do for ourselves?

Dr. Shivani Gupta: We're like, okay, close the laptop, run up, Dr. Shivani Gupta: you know, maybe throw pajamas on. Dr. Shivani Gupta: I've learned a lot of people don't do that. Dr. Shivani Gupta: Plug in our device right next to our head Dr. Shivani Gupta: so it can damage and disease us all night Dr. Shivani Gupta: long, and then read on social. Dr. Shivani Gupta: Maybe we're on TikTok or Instagram.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: We're just like consuming, consuming blue Dr. Shivani Gupta: light, programming, boom, and we should Dr. Shivani Gupta: automatically fall asleep. Dr. Shivani Gupta: And I'm not saying I'm perfect, I totally Dr. Shivani Gupta: do that sometimes. Dr. Shivani Gupta: But what if we did the Ayurvedic way? Dr. Shivani Gupta: The Ayurvedic way is I have alarms on my Dr. Shivani Gupta: phone to remind me 8.15,.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: Invest in self-care time, 9 o'clock, Dr. Shivani Gupta: bedtime rituals, and lead ourselves towards Dr. Shivani Gupta: great sleep using the Ayurvedic rituals.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: So the Ayurvedic rituals are actually 12 of Dr. Shivani Gupta: them and they start in the morning and I've Dr. Shivani Gupta: cut it in half and moved a lot of them into Dr. Shivani Gupta: the evening because most of us aren't that Dr. Shivani Gupta: free in the morning to do so much self-care Dr. Shivani Gupta: and in the evening they're the perfect lead Dr. Shivani Gupta: in for bed. Dr. Shivani Gupta: So I talk about dry brushing.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: Dry brushing is going to move the lymphatic Dr. Shivani Gupta: system so that it works better overnight to Dr. Shivani Gupta: clean and clear and detox us. Dr. Shivani Gupta: The circadian clock in IRV that says we Dr. Shivani Gupta: should sleep from 10 to two on the clock. Dr. Shivani Gupta: That means all of us need to be asleep by Dr. Shivani Gupta: 10.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: I know that that's hard because the average Dr. Shivani Gupta: American is sleeping at 1122, according to Dr. Shivani Gupta: Fitbit. Dr. Shivani Gupta: But if we can move that time up 15 minutes Dr. Shivani Gupta: at a time, sleep alone will clear Dr. Shivani Gupta: inflammation overnight.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: And 10 to two is what we call the fit, that Dr. Shivani Gupta: time of day where the sun is highest in the Dr. Shivani Gupta: sky, and so if you stay up till about Dr. Shivani Gupta: midnight you'll find all of a sudden you're Dr. Shivani Gupta: like I'm a night owl. Dr. Shivani Gupta: I have so much energy, I can do so much. Dr. Shivani Gupta: You are not a night owl. Dr. Shivani Gupta: You're not extra creative at midnight, any Dr. Shivani Gupta: one of us.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: If we got too close to the highest sun Dr. Shivani Gupta: point, we'll all automatically take the Dr. Shivani Gupta: energy that we could have used for detoxing Dr. Shivani Gupta: and clearing inflammation and we'll just Dr. Shivani Gupta: leverage it for work and thus completely Dr. Shivani Gupta: bypass detoxification and cleaning, and so Dr. Shivani Gupta: our job is different sleep rituals.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: I have a deep sleep tea that I developed Dr. Shivani Gupta: purely to help mind and body relax and ease Dr. Shivani Gupta: towards bedtime, because I myself need some Dr. Shivani Gupta: tools hot shower, maybe Epsom salt bath. Dr. Shivani Gupta: I do a heating pad in bed just to keep Dr. Shivani Gupta: myself extra warm and relaxed and comforted Dr. Shivani Gupta: and then go to bed.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: And so the more you can do in that 30 Dr. Shivani Gupta: minutes to an hour leading to bedtime, the Dr. Shivani Gupta: better quality sleep you'll get. Dr. Shivani Gupta: And that deep sleep is going to be so Dr. Shivani Gupta: restorative and healing that when you wake Dr. Shivani Gupta: up in the morning you'll be energized. Dr. Shivani Gupta: So when I wake up in the morning, I'm Dr. Shivani Gupta: joyful.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: I'm like, wow, I'm excited about today, and Dr. Shivani Gupta: before I used to wake up tired and Dr. Shivani Gupta: exhausted and hitting the snooze button and Dr. Shivani Gupta: never wanting to wake up. Dr. Shivani Gupta: And so that's my dream, is for all of us to Dr. Shivani Gupta: do even a few self-care rituals before bed. Dr. Shivani Gupta: So we wake up so excited. I'm sitting here, I'm like, oh gosh, if she just knew, if she knew what I do.

And look, I mean, like you said, I mean we, even when we're in this space, we have things we break our own. But it's a, it's an awakening, it's an awareness just to say, okay, what can I do differently? Why am I going down this road? How can I make one small change just to elevate my life, right? So I'm glad you actually mentioned that there's some things that you do? Dr. Shivani Gupta: What is Shivani's biggest challenge?

Dr. Shivani Gupta: Oh gosh, I would say my biggest challenge Dr. Shivani Gupta: is food. Dr. Shivani Gupta: Because I'm vegetarian, I want to eat Dr. Shivani Gupta: Ayurvedic, I want to eat seasonal, I want Dr. Shivani Gupta: to eat organic, I want to eat according to Dr. Shivani Gupta: my dosha.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: My dosha says don't eat anything hot and Dr. Shivani Gupta: spicy, because I'm already a fire, and all Dr. Shivani Gupta: I want is I pour hot, spicy, hot sauces on Dr. Shivani Gupta: everything I eat. Dr. Shivani Gupta: So I break that rule all day. Dr. Shivani Gupta: I want to eat high protein because I'm in Dr. Shivani Gupta: perimenopause. Dr. Shivani Gupta: I want to eat such nutrient density with Dr. Shivani Gupta: sprouts and so no matter.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: And I'm so obsessed with health all I do is Dr. Shivani Gupta: read about health. Dr. Shivani Gupta: So I'm in one of those awkward positions Dr. Shivani Gupta: where I can never win, no matter what I do. Dr. Shivani Gupta: So I've had to make a lot of peace with Dr. Shivani Gupta: food and just acknowledge that there's Dr. Shivani Gupta: seven days in a week.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: We can't have perfection on any given day, Dr. Shivani Gupta: but if one or two meals out of the day are Dr. Shivani Gupta: so awesome, it's okay. Dr. Shivani Gupta: Even one meal at this point, right. And go easy on yourself, right? If you do that, if we start bashing ourselves for the little things that we do, that we'd like to do better, we're our own worst bully. And it's nice to hear the human side of the doctor.

Yeah, yeah, you know, we all have those moments, so thank you for sharing that. I would have to say, for me it's probably sleep and once in a while it'll be sugars, you know, but I know how I feel when I have too much, you know. And uh, just just making those small notes to yourself of how does this make me feel? Dr. Shivani Gupta: Absolutely. Yeah, so again, fusionary Formulas. Dr. Shivani Gupta: So I don't take everything away from you Dr. Shivani Gupta: which typically, if you want to reduce Dr. Shivani Gupta: inflammation, you're going to take away Dr. Shivani Gupta: that sugar, we're going to take away Dr. Shivani Gupta: alcohol, we're going to take away gluten. Dr. Shivani Gupta: So instead I try to add a lot back in.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: Let's give you glorious sleep, let's get Dr. Shivani Gupta: you feeling great, and then, yes, I will Dr. Shivani Gupta: take one or two food categories away from Dr. Shivani Gupta: you. Are you going to tell us what those are? Dr. Shivani Gupta: I mean the top five inflammatory foods that Dr. Shivani Gupta: I teach are dairy, sugar, alcohol, gluten Dr. Shivani Gupta: and then red meat. Dr. Shivani Gupta: Which red meat is?

Dr. Shivani Gupta: You know it's dependent on the person. Dr. Shivani Gupta: Some of us are so built to digest it, not Dr. Shivani Gupta: all of us. Dr. Shivani Gupta: Sometimes I talk to my clients. Dr. Shivani Gupta: I'm like, look, just give it, take it out Dr. Shivani Gupta: for two weeks, let the gut heal and then Dr. Shivani Gupta: bring it back in it. Dr. Shivani Gupta: I know it has a lot of benefits.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: It just depends on your different template Dr. Shivani Gupta: of body. Dr. Shivani Gupta: So cutting inflammation is very key and Dr. Shivani Gupta: that's why I also made the Dr. Shivani Gupta: anti-inflammatory cookbook, just to show Dr. Shivani Gupta: different ways to reduce inflammation.

Dr. Shivani Gupta: The thing is, if we're not going to Dr. Shivani Gupta: consistently reduce inflammation in this Dr. Shivani Gupta: day and time, we're going to have that Dr. Shivani Gupta: chronic buildup of toxic burden and Dr. Shivani Gupta: different issues. Dr. Shivani Gupta: So that's why I'm so passionate about all Dr. Shivani Gupta: the ways we can reduce inflammation. And what I love that you're sharing about both of these. They're so synergetic together.
