Episode description

In this “Interview with a Vampire”, one of Jarod and Dave O’s closest pals, Ashley Greene, stops by the Hey Pal Podcast to discuss her precocious, "Lebron-esque" rise to fame. Her success contrasts nicely with Dave O’s failed career as a back up wedding officiant and… Jarod's life in general. Is it ok to laugh? yes.

From my arm Radio Common Enemy contenderm with TV the Pal podcast Pal Hey Pal with Jared and Hey Pal, Hey Pal. Welcome to another edition of the hay Pal Podcast. I'm extremely excited. That was really good. Thank you. Yeah, you want to do that again. Appreciate it, do do it again. It just felt so like welcome to another edition of the hay Pal Podcast. Good job. Super excited about our guests today. Because we always have pals on the show. All these guests are pals of ours, I

would hope so. But this is a real, real pal that we've spent significant time with, We've traveled with. This is somebody that actually likes both of us, not just me, which is typically the case on the show. Um, and it's somebody. I mean, I even officiate her wedding and you were there that you did? I I was, I was. By the way, is that something like we never even talked about this when she got Is that something you you do like a lot? Or was that like a

one time favorite that that was my seven wedding? I had to stop it. I know I would know if you do that. It's a true story. How do I not know that you that you officiate weddings. I mean, maybe we're not as close as we thought we were. Okay, give me okay, Well, was Ash the um like the only actress? Well, no, she wasn't the only actress. And I've actually I've been the backup. I've been the alternate officiant for a couple of big weddings as well. Okay, give it, give it to me Devo. So we get

to our guests. Now we get to know about DEVO and officiating weddings. Who were you the backup? Re? Sorry about that. I was the the backup for Hugh Heffner and uh and Crystal Heffner's wedding, as if like if if you Heffner died, then you get to marry Crystal. No, no, although my mom have taken that at this point. Um, No, I was if the officiant. I believe he flew in from another state. If he had missed his flight, I would have been the person that officiated. So be honest

with me. Were you kind of hoping that day when you woke up without question, he would miss it? And were you invited to the wedding? No? Surprisingly, no, surprisingly, No, no, I was gonna be hired. David Dave Hold on. We've got to get dashually agree, but we got to spend some more time with this whole This is turning into me interviewing. Yes, Dave Osco was asked to back up officiate you Hefner's wedding. Yes, but you weren't invited to the wedding? Correct? Did you have direct like a connection

with Hugh? Who are you dealing with? You? And I have some history that I don't really want to go to on air, but um I will talk about it was the wedding planner, and the wedding planner had seen me officiate a couple of weddings prior to Heffner's wedding and she thought was good weddings. Then, Yes, how did you get into this? What is going on right now? This guy? Do we need to start a whole another

podcast called Devo and the Officiating Times? We might need to be Officiating Chronicles, the Officiating Chronicles, whatever you want to do? Yeah, well, okay, so give me one more cool, Like who else did you do that was cool? Uh? Well? This was another one that I was a backup. Was Gene Simmons from Kiss Okay, I was the alternate for that one as well, same scenario. Was it the same wedding planner? Uh? No, a different wedding plan Holy cow? Yeah,

I'm known in the wedding planners, sir. How are you single? Day? I understand why I'm single and how I'm single, But you're out there like mingling and getting in good with wedding planners. I mean, I believe in love, Jared, it just hasn't happened. Okay, are we just starting now? Before having said that, let's get into our guests. But I want our audience members to know that we are going to have you know what we should do? Didn't We should do one episode just me and you and I.

You know what I'm gonna do. I'm gonna interview you for one episode, and I'm gonna prep it, just like we put cours of prep for our guests. Okay, and then we'll we'll have a bunch of our you know, powells on for a couple episodes, and then the next one you interview me, and you prep it and and and I'll answer all the questions. My only the only caveat is can you give me the questions you want me to ask you? Because I don't really know what

to ask you. That was terrible way to ruin it, all right, So our next Guests shot up to fame when she was cast as Alice Cullen in the Twilight franchise. She has also been a part of movies like Baring the X opposite Alexandrew, Dadario and Anton Yelchin, CBGB starring Malin Ackerman, Reuben Rupert Grint and Alan Rickman, and Bombshell Was Charlie's Throne, Nicole Kidman and Margot Robbie. Please give a hey pal. Welcome to miss Ashley Green. Ashley, how

are you. I'm so good. Thank you guys for having me one of our best. He's actually Green Corey, actually Green, that's actually actually you dropped that one. I'm I'm not giving Paul any credit on this podcast. You are ours for the next half hour. No, Paul Corey is a part of this. Oh because very very true. All right now, ash Let's just get right into it. Um. There are very few people that have gone from high school to the pros and exceeded all expectations. And in sports, Lebron

James was one of those people. King James and the n b A He was really the first NBA athlete that had the expectations that he did and actually came through with those expectations and lived up to them. Now, very similar in the way that Lebron did that Ashley Green before she was Ashley Green, Corey went from high

school directly to the pros. I mean, you moved out here from Jacksonville, Florida to Los Angeles when you were seventeen years old, and you start your journey and acting, and uh, right off the bat, you got one of the biggest parts, one of the most sought after parts in Hollywood, which would be essentially going to the pros and that is getting your part in in the Twilight movie, which was something that, based on the books, was guaranteed to be a big hit. So, um, how exactly was

that transition? And you know, how do you feel that you exceed those expectations yourself? And also is a franchise, Ron Green? That's me thank you for the introduction. Yeah, you know, I um came to l A and basically it's like, I'm just going to be the best and then did that kidding Annahole? All right, So, I you know, I think when I moved to l A, I add a little bit of naivety in my in my pocket. And I think that was very helpful because I did move to l A and say, like, I'm just going

to succeed. There's no other option. This is what I'm gonna do. I my entire life was taught if you are not great at something, become great work. Ethnic was something that my dad really worked hard and still kind of drilled into our brains. Um. So I kind of came to l A with that mindset, and I think that it ended up being very helpful. Was before I realized just how savage Pollywood can be um and uh.

And I think that that was part of the reason that I was as successful, um, you know, as early on as I was, because I just kind of was like, oh, this is going to happen. And I think and some and some sense kind of willed it to happen, um and uh and yeah. I just kind of got to l A, started the grind audition for everything I could, went to every acting class I could, um and happened to look like a vampire that was made up in someone's mind. But Ash, there was this there, there was

this phenomenon around this this book. I guess we're kind of calling this book in this example high school, right, yeah, and then and then you know, and then you already have all the expectations of this book. What kind of pressures was it after you get cast, you know, and then you go off to shoot this thing, and then you guys actually exceed like this book was crazy was everywhere, and then the movie exceeds already the high expectations of

the book, which is just absolutely insane. Yeah. Yeah, well, I mean, listen, I can't take credit for any of the writing of the book or the the I guess success in that sense, but I do think, you know, we it was everything came together really perfectly, and I think that Stephanie Meyer did a great job at tapping into that one teenage inkst but also creating characters that every person could relate to. Like I feel like there was a character in Twilight that every person could somehow

like tap into. Um. I got very lock in the sense that I was cast as Alice Calling, and I feel like she's just by nature a very lovable, very relatable character. Um And um, you know, I think in general I am a pretty likable person. M optimistic. Thank you thanks for that. Um. But but yeah, you know,

and just kind of threw myself into it. And then I think I also part of the reason I think I I did as well as I did as well is that I I kind of made it my mission to make sure that I kind of catered to and became a person that our young audience could look up to. There was, you know, when we were thrust into the spotlight and and and got these roles, Um, we weren't just kind of on set playing a role. I think they're keen this responsibility alongside it, um to be a

role model for these young girls. And Dave and I often talk about um, like growing up and playing sports, you know, like when we went to the basketball court, it kind of like even as a kid like five six, seven, eight, like it just fills a void and you it's kind of like your temple, and it's like it's like very peaceful for us. And then of course you grow in it and you get better at it, and if you want to take it serious, you can take it serious.

And so I was just wondering, like what do you get out of like what do you get out of acting that you don't get out of real life? You know, like for for us, for athletes, like we go to the basketball court and what we're getting is we're getting a moment to breathe and we're getting this, Like I said, it's kind of our temple and like a place of peace. It's like, what do you get out of out of acting that you don't you know that that you get to kind of step away from and you don't get

out of real life? Well, I think there's in the same way that people go to spend them out of kind of escape realities. I think it's the same way for me. Whatever I step on set, I it is

like kind of my safe place. Like I think if your director is doing a good job, they create a safe space for you to be able to grow and play um, you know, with your characters and this this person that you've created and so you know, for me, it's always very fun to be able to dine into a character and kind of look at someone else's mindset it's very different from mine. I think there's a there's

also a growth there. Like with I say, it's like my therapy because it forces you to kind of look at different perspectives in a way that I never would as as Ashley Um and so yeah, as Ashley or as lebron Sorry, well, it's also a testament to your talent, because Jared very much looks like a vampire and he hasn't gotten any work in Hollywood. So the role of the vampire very close to being like, did you know this about your co host? Did you know? I did know.

I did know. But again, your talent one out and his unfortunately didn't. It's true, by the way, for all the listeners, Ashley Green and I were in each other's first acting class. So if Ashley would have, you know, taught me a couple more things, I too could have been lebron professional. If Lebronn would have taught me a couple of tricks, I could have been a professional actor. Instead, we're interviewing her. That's what's going on right now. But

Brown was busy focusing on self growth. It's down. That's probably true. That's probably true. That that I do. I

love that. So what about like you? You you were part of also this massive cast, right, Like I mean a lot of times when we go see movies, we see a lead opposite another lead with a couple of supportings, and you were opposite this massive cast and Dave and I were talking about this before the show is we were we were actually talking about how Tom Brady is now in Tampa Bay and Bruce arians as a coach, and then with came with with with Tom Brady came

Rob Gronkowski. Now they've just signed Antonio Brown. You know they've got they they signed all these you know, Leonard Fournette, all these different running backs. They have got so many people on top of what's the roster, Dave, like fifty and people or fifty five and they have it's like an ensemble. Yeah, it's a massive, massive, it's an all

star team. Yeah it is. It's just crazy. And when you look at basketball and you've got Phil Jackson, who's got to you know, manage all these different personalities from Jordan to Pip into Rodman to run our tests and all these So it got us thinking, like when you were on this, on this massive set and this ensemble, like what is it like with the director? How does

the director bring everyone together? So because for our listeners, you know, you've got Ashley Green, You've got Kellen Lutts, you've got Peter Facconelli, you've got Taylor Lawner, you've got Robert Pattinson, you've got you know, Kristin Stewart, you've got it. I mean, Jackson Rathbone, Anna Kendrick. It goes on and on. So what what are the tricks of the trade. What do they do to bring you guys together and make

sure everybody's flowing as want to build that chemistry? Yeah, I think you know that Catherine Hardwick really had that. That was kind of her job. I think by the time we got to two, three, four and five, um that you know, we've already created this bond and we knew our characters very well. So for the directors following Katherine, it was more about coming in and kind of you know,

working within these characters we created and bringing out different layers. Um. But we had already as people, created this I think bond like we had gone through something that no one else we knew had gone through. And so I think you know that in itself created like a really great kind of you know, working relationship between everyone and allowed

us to all be very respectful with each other on set. Um. But during the first one, you know that we didn't realize that Twilight was going to be what it was we were It was like we were almost a part of this like indie film, and the way that Katherine approached it was was such as that, and and you know she was really kind of putting us in a

position to grow and learn together. Um. And so you know, I think for us and that like it was before not that we became DeVos in two through five, but it was before we kind of realized the position that we were in. So everyone was just very excited to be there into Dake direction and to kind of you know, build or be a part of this vampire film. But you know, we didn't. We knew that the book had followed a following, but we had no idea that we

were going to be in such a successful franchise. What about like do they do they go like we we we all need to go bowling for a night, or like just because it's just again, it's just so many personalities. So like we obviously know you have the table read right and and people get to know each other, but what about outside of that before you start the first movie? Um, yeah, I mean we all kind of like got together and hung out, but very early on Catherine made us and rehearsals. Um,

she made us all pretend that we were cats. Uh, this is awesome. Okay, yeah, we're listening. If we had to crawl around in his and jump and it was so fucking uncomfortable that I feel like we all in our uncomfortability kind of like forced us to come together. And I don't know, like it broke down these boundaries I think between each person. It was really smart on

her and I don't know if she liked that foresight. Um, she really just wanted us to move around like we were kind of like uli and asked the vampires with what I mean, that's amazing and that's something maybe Jared and I should do on our dates as an icebreaker to just see if we can get somewhere. Oh you meant on dates as eyes. I thought you were talking about right now. No, when we go on dates, but maybe we should ask our date Dave to crawl around

like a cat, Dave. I hate to say this in the middle of the show with Actually we don't go on dates. No, we don't, but let's continue with it if that day ever comes. Okay, okay, but before we move on to the next question, we just want to make make this very clear. Is that you were in a room doing a table read where everybody is jumping, jumping and crawling as cats. This was this was post table read. This was rehearsal in the ballet studio. But but yes, we all had to jump around and meal

and act like we're a cat. It was very it's very confusing. It was a bonding experience. I almost wish you guys had all auditioned for the like asserting dominance where she was like, listen on your little ship, I'm gonna make on like cats. I kind of wish they would recast Cats with the cast of Twilight. I give it with you better first movements. So call me, don't go anywhere, Hey, Pam will be right back after a

work for our sponsors. All right now. Similar to great players like Lebron James, we've mentioned Derek Jeter, Peyton Manning who went on to do things beyond sports. Like Peyton Manning even does like acting now in commercials. You have gone on to do things using your platform. You know that you gained from Twilight and you're an entrepreneur. Ash

You're involved in so many different things. Uh. You have these gyms that are opening next chen, you have inventions that I maybe don't don't want to talk about right now on the podcast that's just yet. But you're involved in in in philanthropy, You're you're involved in so many different things, and how was how is your career and the attention that you've gained from those things, how does that helped you to do these other endeavors. Yeah, I am,

it's definitely so. I feel like my position is sometimes it's like a blessing in the curse, right, Like I think there's more exposure, so you have to kind of cover your basis. But it certainly gives me a platform to be able to get gain the attention of a lot of people from the get go. UM. And it's also opened a lot of doors for me as far as having access to people that can help accelerate the

growth of the companies. UM. You know that some people just don't have and that's certainly something that I'm kind of learning to navigate that space in the business world. UM. But I will say, like it's funny because I for so long was really immersed in the world of acting and that's all I was doing. UM, and this pandemic really was like what made me kind of take a big set back and we weren't allowed to be on set for almost a year. UM, and I sat down and said, like, you know, how am I going to

use my time wisely? And I can't just sit here and do nothing, um, And so really dove in and decided to create a startup that we're about to launch, which is super exciting. But I forgot how like I like tasks and I like analytical thinking and I like that side of things that I just hadn't exercised it for so long. Um. But it's a it's a really cool kind of you know, space to be and mind you, the second I got back on set, I was like,

I also loved this so much. It's like I feel like I'm like split between two things that I equally loved. But I think that they go hand in hand. And I think that you know, we've seen a lot of people, um kind of kind of cross over the boundaries and be able to be a little bit of a jack of all trades, and that's certainly what I'm trying to do.

I think, you know, if I have the access and ability to do it in the bandwidth, why not if we gave you an envelope and in that envelope is going to be what said the blue pill, And in that envelope is when you pull it out, is going to be a a word that has written on a piece of paper that lets you know the genre of the next movie that you have to go make. Okay, so you don't know if it's going to say comedy, if it's gonna say action, it's gonna say drama, sci

fi and all. So it's it's kind of a question mark of what it's gonna say. Who is the actor that you are going to pick to play opposite you? Cumberbatch? Wow? Wow, Wow, let's talk about let's talk about this or at cumber Batch. I think he's so brilliant and I love, like, I don't know everything I watched my film. It just brings me so much joy. And I think he's so kind of like multifaceted and there was no boundary as an actor. Um so I think him are like Michael Sheen is

another one that popped into my head as well. Um but I just feel like would be phenomenal no matter kind of what position you put him in. But but yeah, I think Benedict is he's the number one pick. He was, he was Ashley Green's number one pick. I hope Paul knows this number one him. Paul and I have a list of people who were like, Oh, it's totally cool that you like have a slap obsession with that person, because generally our obsessions ALIGNE. So what are you hoping?

That piece of paper says, though, so you've got you've nabbed Benedict Cumberbatch. What are you hoping? The piece of paper says what genre? Probably psychological thriller. Psychological thriller starring Ashley Green, Bennet Cumberbatche. And who is directing that psychological thriller? Oh gosh, well, I'm like, I really want to a lot of the directors I want to work with, I don't know that they would be like I love Sofia Coppola. He should be great to work with. I think you

let's go. Cythia. I feel like I love her because I'm like, I also want to remake Ranchoinette so so awesome. She wants to do that with me. That's cool too. I think I think that's a really good I think that's a really good pick. I love it, And I think that that leads us to one of our favorite portions of our What does it lead us to day? It leads us to our seating? Are we're in the playoffs. We are in the playoffs, and I think we're going to do such a great job. She's already made it

to the playoffs. She's done it an amazing job, and uh, I'm feeling good about this. So let's get started with our playoffs seating. James. Alright, alright, Ashley, you heard it. You heard it from from Dave, so you uh have often done love movies. You also I love that she's like she's just last love movies. Rom romantic romantic movies,

Ashley Green. Okay, romantic movies. You also starred in a franchise that was all about young love, Sowen Ant teen Angst so here making it two our Ashley Green playoffs. We have some seedings for you, and you're going to decide who advances and then who eventually will make it to the finals and who wins the championship. Are you ready? Is Olivia Wild on there? Nor? Is that good or bad? Is that disappointing? She's my favorite on skids? Anyways? Okay, well,

thanks for the interview. We'll see everybody next week. Um, alright, dead, you want to take it away, all right? So starting out, the number one seed in our playoff format today is I mean, this is a classic. It gets me. It chokes me up every time. I know, I know Jared has shed many tears this movie. Number one seed the Notebook versus the number eight seed. Love and Basketball. Who is advancing Ashley Green? I mean obviously Notebook. Okay, Well,

that's why it's the number one. That's why number one. I have to have attitude about it. Number okay, okay, So the Notebook has advanced. By the way, they just held. They held home court. They did their job at the fans came out, they cheered, They did their thing. Love and Basketball couldn't get it done on the road. The next seating is the two seed versus seventh seed. The number two seed is Karate Kid verse the number seven seed Hunger Games. Who is advancing Oh man, guy, um,

everyone's comple gonna hate you for this. I'm gonna go with the under namest huge set, huge upset. Wow. Okay, this were by the way, this was this was all These seatings are done by fans of the hay Pel podcast that emails in and they let us know. So it's a it's a it's a randomized thing here. Okay, So I've already let down your core audience and our mothers. Okay, so the three seed verses six seed were on too, and our mothers are let down just by our actions

and has nothing to do it. Actually, um, alright, number three we have I mean, one of the greatest of all times, Grease. And at number six we have a walk to remember. Oh, Greece for sure, all right, wasn't even alright? So Grease moving on, Greece is moving on. And now we've gotten to the fourth seed verse the fifth seed. The fourth seed is clueless verse the fifth seed. Ten Things I Hate about You? About You? Yeah, so good,

so good? Who's advancing? I mean, yeah you alright? So other semi up semi upset love The Things I Hate About You is just so like I could rewatch that movie over and over again. So, so, Ashley, who what what is your favorite part of Ten Things I Hate About You? Was my favorite part? Keith Ledger? I knew, I knew, I know. Is he on the Paul Corey Ashley Green Corey list? Heith Ledger? The rock is on there?

Oh wow? All right. I can see Paul like in the rock, but he's like, literally, actually you need to become friends with him. I'm like, I am working on it. It's not as easy to think. I'll see if I can help with that. Yes, all right, So now we have the semifinals. But before we go to the semifinals, I think we should take a quick little break. We like to do something on Hey Pal called the Hey Pal Spelling Bee, ash So we're gonna have you and

Jared compete in a quick spelling contest. You cannot use your computer, you cannot use your phone, so you might have to hold your hands up because I don't know if I if I trust you. There we go, There we go, And that's that's perfect too. And Jared will not be using and he has no assistance. That's why we love her. Don't go anywhere. Hey Pam will be right back after a word from our sponsors. So the word today is an adjective, and I'm gonna let who wants to go first on this? You want to try

to spell it first? You want to, I'm gonna we our guests gets to decide, Ashley, You're going first year? Am I going first? I don't know the word either. You can. You can go first, guys. I just want to put out there that I'm pretty not smart. I'm just kidding. I get so nervous. But now you go, you go first, Okay, I'll go first, all right, and let's keep those hands up. As the word is precocious? Why is this the word? The word is precocious? I

know why is this the word? Well? Because do you want to know what the definition of I want to know why this is the word on the Hate Bell podcast with Ashley Green because it has to do with you. Oh okay, well what does it have to do with Well? The definition is developed more than in natural or usual at a given age, exceeding what is to be expected of one's years. So Ashley has that going for you don't.

So that is why we're using the word. Jared is not a precocious child or was not a precocius child? Is is the word in a sentence? So why I do this podcast? But I will go for sure? Precocious? Holy cow? So stupid? Pr E see O T I O U S precocious? Ashley, would you like to spell the word precocious? It's an adjective it's of Latin origin. Uh p r e c O c I O us. Once again proving my theory. Ashley Green is the winner, proving based unlike my co host Jared, who is not

a precocious child. Actually, you just you just slow rolled me. All right, let's move on to the semi finals of our playoff seeding. Why was precocious our words so dumb? Jaredy? Well, I mean you read that or do you need help reading? Smartest man at Ashley Green. We've got the one seed versus seventh seed, the Notebook Verse, hung Games. Who is going to the Ashley Green Finals? Jared? All right, so that means the Notebook alright, the Notebook has advanced to

the Ashley Green Finals. That we've got the three seed Verse, the five seed David, the three seed Grease Verse, the five seed, the very liked ten Things I Hate about You. Oh damn, Greece is such a classic though, I gotta go. All right, so we have our finals, which is gonna be between the Notebook and Greece. But before we do that, we're gonna put you very quickly in the hey Pal penalty box. I'm gonna ask you a series of questions rapid fire. You just say the first word or the

first answer that comes to mind. Okay, favorite horror film of all time horror films is the interview with the vampire or horror fis Jared? I mean if Ashley Green says it on the hate Pell podcast, than it is there it is. That's interview with a vampire. All right? Um, if you could eat only one ice cream flavor for the rest of your life, what flavor would that be? Matcha. Wow, that's a curveball. I like that matcha. Um. Favorite place you have traveled in your life Italy, tuscany um, place

you have not been that you want to travel to? Oh, um, Greece, Greece, which, ironically, Dave, that's a great segue because let's get to the finals. Love it? Wow? Is she okay? Um? Ashley Green, we thank you for being on the Haypal podcast. We didn't do the final. Let me finish, Dave quitchtion. We thank you for being on the Haypal podcast and for our final. Oh you're building Yeah, I was trying to, you know what, I'm done with the druma. The one seed is the

notebook versus the three seed. Greece, the favorite place that you want to go that you have not been yet? Who is winning the finals? Um? I don't know. I feeling good. I feel we have to go to greet you to set no way that is big? Who would have thought that Dandy Newton? Was it? Thandy Newton? No? Sorry, John, I just said, my god, sitting next to any more Olivia Newton, John, you didn't let me finish. Dandy Newton was not in that movie, but Olivia Newton John was

thank you? And John Travolta would beat Ryan Gosling and Rachel McAdams. Did you think you'd see that day, Dave? I mean it's it's a very interesting day, but I you know, I expect it. We're dealing with a highly advanced individual here as a propocious individual here, So Ashley Green, ladies and gentlemen, our pal, UH love you. We're so excited about everything that you have going on, everything you've already accomplished, and UH look forward to seeing what you're

gonna do next. Yeah, I love you, guys to thank you for having me, and I'll come on again. Is that come back? Um? And we can talk about the company that I've launched because it will be launching soon and then we can talk all about it. We will have you Ashley Green on the Haypal podcast every week. You let us know and you're on. Good Bye buds, Thank you, thank you. First of all, she's awesome, I mean, she's one of our best pals. Second of all, Uh,

Greece winning the championship. Yeah, this, this whole playoff seating is starting to catch on. Oh yeah, I feel like our guests are really loving it. Yes, um, what did you were you gonna go with a notebook? You definitely were gonna go with the notebook, right yeah. I mean look, I'm, you know, half man, half emotional wreck.
