Episode description

Are You Getting Enough B-12?

As we get older it can get harder to get all of the vitamins and minerals we need from our food. There are various reasons for that but mostly it has to do with less stomach acid to break down our food into essential vitamins.

One of those vitamins is B12. This podcast is a repeat from 2020 but it is just as important now as it was then. B12 helps us maintain and improve our red blood cells, nervous system, digestive system, and our production of DNA to name just a few. If that sounds important you’re right and it is. Some of the B12 deficiency symptoms that show that you need more in your body are depression, canker sores, brain fog, tingling in your legs and feet, and fatigue. If you have any of those symptoms you should go talk to your doctor and be sure to ask for a test to measure your level of B12.

If you are a vegan or a vegetarian there is a good chance you may be low on B12. Why is that? Well, it’s because B12 is found in animal products and you mostly likely don’t eat any. The best sources of B12 are in beef and fish (salmon & tuna mostly). Your best bet is to start taking a B12 supplement and don’t worry if you are only a little bit deficient because your body will absorb what it needs and passes the excess out in your urine.

If you have any specific questions about whether you need to take extra B12 ask your doctor for his/her advice!
