This episode of the Group Chat is brought to you by Lift. Lift will pick you up at your door and get you where you need to go. Hey, everybody. On this week's the Group Chat, we are talking all things combine as we get ready to head to Indianapolis. Every player gets asked who have you met with or who have you spoken to? And it gets treated as

if it's like this like breaking news. It's like, Okay, uh, so and so player just said that they've met with the Panthers, right, and it's like they're going to meet with pretty much everybody and then stick around towards the end where the guys play a game of NFL Combine Participant or Rapper Combine participants, Combine participants. He's a combine participates.

No rapper. Here's the thing. No rapper has come from Indianapolis. Yes, we have that in so much more, including Will embarrassing himself. On this week's the Group Chat, You've been added to the Group Chat with your friends Caroline, can Max Enson and Will Brian. Everybody, it's the Group Chat. Caroline Maxwell, You're three best friends that you've ever had are sitting here on Puts today Thursday. It's my dad's birthday last Thursday, February. I have wished him a happy birthday, but we'll do

it publicly here. Happy birthday, John Can, Happy birthday, Big one. Okay, the big One. I can say that on there because he's my dad. He's he's been a big part of this year of the group chat recurring character. Yeah, I'm really I'm still kind of mad at didn't get the coaching job, to be honest, Yeah, has he taken that. It was tough. It was as a family. It was really hard. Um, but you know, we we believe in Matt rule. So if you're gonna lose to somebody, lose

a Matt rule. You know. He was in there at the end though, So happy birthday to Dad. And we're getting ready for the NFL Scouting Combine in Indianapolis, Indiana. You guys excited, Well, well, you're not going, this is this is also, this is also we're excited to go and then wait, oh wait, well is not going not going, but I'm going. I'm going. I'm having some fun to tell us what we were doing while we're going to Well, y'all, y'all are going to hang out in you know, boardrooms

and convention halls. I'm going skiing gosh, so yeah, and that'd be fun. When's the last time he's skied? Uh? Seventh grade? So what do we what do we expect from you on the slopes this weekend? Probably a lot of the like the pizza thing. We're going to be taking a sub bunny bunny hill. I mean I'm trying to no, I mean not that. I mean there's some greens. I'll do some greens, and so you feel pretty confident that you can take the lift up for your first run.

You know, you don't have to go on the little slope to get your feet wetting. So I think that there's a slope near where we're going to be where you can just start at the top so I can go down it without having to get off the lift first. Are you going to ski or snowboard? Ski? Okay, you'll be fine on the lift. Then yeah, we're gonna need

some content from this. Make sure you don't have to post any of this, but when you just send it to you, there's some there's some internal group chats that I feel like for some reason, I feel like will in like ski years just also going to be very amusing so we're just gonna need to see the full fit, the goggles and everything. Gosh, no, that's why I'm laughing because I just pictured it in my head. That's gonna be so fun. Well, while he's going to what West

Virginia that we're going, he's going to West Virginia. We're heading up, not in the same direction, but ish we're going. You're going north. Have you scheduled the lift for I have to do that. I still have got a lift. We're just lifting it the whole way there. I'm just kidding. We're not, but we do still love lift, and I I wouldn't do it, but if I was told I had to, I would. I would just ask for a driver.

I would get the biggest car. If we had like those Yukons when the mobile those are nice, I would do I would do an extra big lift. But that's because we only love lift because they're not just because they're on as our sponsor. But that's a really big reason why we love them. When we love them because they can get you anywhere. So just skip the hassle of finding or paying for parking or going to the airport and getting on a plane and just take lift everywhere.

Thank you. Lift And even though we're not going to take you to the Combine, we are going there. We're flying. However, I got a weather notification on my flight about trying to change it. I know you're you're flying out tonight, right tomorrow. Okay, so you have the weather here in Charlotte, this huge snowstorm, snowstorm is coming. It's already kind of like cold rain now, which is just going to shut down the schools for that. I know it Isn't that about as bad as it's kidding? I heard we might

get an inch? Yeah, maybe too. So I hope you have your milk and bread because I get ready. Well, well, I know you can't really participate in like this question, but just for fun, if you want to make something up for it, Max, what's the coldest you've ever been at the Combine? Have you been two years ago? Yeah? I mean I was. I was out there for a year where the snow was coming down, um pretty much the entire time I was out there. I don't remember how cold it was, but I'm pretty sure it was

probably like eighteen something like that. Twenty you know, your typical February in India. I feel like I feel like the wind on a couple of those streets get very like a wind tunnel and you just feel like you can't escape it. Are you excited, Matt? Yeah? Matt? Are you ready? Are you going to have like everything packed? The issue is getting it back? Yeah? He was really good. He nailed the packing part of great at that. It's

the it's the getting it back. I think since we're flying with not the team, I think I'll be able to handle this. Yeah, you'll just know, you'll be able to check into your flight and know when it is exactly. I get that. I get that. Yeah, the whole gang is going except for Will, which just makes this bit even better. That's just unscripted content. We didn't have to come up with that. Will my will my normal hoodie be enough? Or is it going to be like you

gotta layer up there? Right? So? Is this a serious question? Yeah, you're just bringing a hoodie? Oh No, I'm just saying I normally just like where hoodies and stuff? Is that going to be to bring a jacket? The thing is, I think all my heavy jackets are still like where I'm from. I didn't think I brought him matt jacket before we go, although I do think it's not supposed to be that bad while So you get in on Monday, Monday night, Okay, you're fine because it's only going to

get bad right when you're leaving. You leave Thursday, you're fine, except for on Wednesday. It's supposed to snow a little bit. But no, I mean you're looking at fifty degrees Monday Tuesday, forty on Wednesday. And then what about what about what about when he's hitting the town at night. Yeah, you're getting in loads of twenty five that's brutal. Might require a jacket. Have you not worn a jacket in Charlotte yet? No, it's all all the time foodie season when you're walking

over to the convention center in the morning. But he can all he can take the wind tunnels, canny, Well, you can't there. There is actually what hotel I think. I think on the inside. You can just walk around in Indi from like one side, not the entire city like Menneapolis, but you can walk walks. You can walk from hotel to convention center through a skywalk. I'll just do that. Yeah. So yeah, if you're gonna do that, you just need a T shirt. Then you don't even

need would, yes, but the lay of the land. That's what we're going to give you here for the NFL Combine. UM. And this is a fun exercise because Matt has never been before, so we have told him many things about the combine, but this this might be fun. If you have any questions about it's the same questions that the fans out there have so asked them. Please alright, so lay the lamp for the combine. The way that it works. Everyone arrives ish on Monday, and then Tuesday is when

Matt Rule is going to speak. I'm excited about this one. He's gonna do the whole we call it a car wash, but it's when he just goes through all of the different media entities. So he'll speak at the podium in the afternoon and then go around to a couple of the other big sets. NBC is normally there with their Pro Football talk um. ESPN of course has a big set and if our network all that jazz, so look for that on Tuesday. Also on Tuesday, we're back might

as well. Yeah, I'll still be in the mountains. He's gonna be driving back sore. He's going to be so sore. If I'm only sore and not broken, I will be happy with sore. I get that. But we are going to do a edition of the group chat from Indianapolis, so that'll be fun. We hopefully you're going to have some cool things for you guys. UM. If not, then you'll just get you know, one of these you know, But we are planning on that on Tuesday. UM. Wednesday

will be a bunch of other just daily content. This is when mock drafts come to life and you start to see these guys and see these players. I'm doing some things, not playing, but they are doing things. They're doing something athletically. Did you guys see the new drills that are happening? What are the new drills? There's new drills, the new new This was on Twitter today. This updates some things. This was some content that I wasn't sure. I didn't know I was going to learn this today.

But according to Jordan's red Um, who is he's with the Draft Network. He said that these are the new combine additions, uh smoke routes for quarterbacks and wide receivers. You know what that is? So I guess you know, like when the quarterbacks go through their passing portion. They're just going to add that to the I believe, so okay, and then O line, D line and tighten sled push for yea, it says for two to five yards. I think they just want to see that initial contact five yards.

Defensive line timed figure eight bin drill going to be a new time drill. Okay, so that one um dbs and wide receivers timed dou W and gauntlet offensive line screen drills for screenplays. I thought that was pretty interesting. And apparently they are getting rid of the offensive line rabbit mirror drill that is I know that is one of the classics though, although the down is the best obviously. Yeah, it's that one. You guys didn't get to see my

movement there. And then this is the one that I think is just heartbreaking, the defensive line shuffle bag touch. It will be the same, it's changing, and that's too much change without the shuffle bag touch. Yeah, Max, are you good at the shuffle bag touch? Me? I feel like you'd be you'd be swift. I'm a big three cone drill guy. That's that's my jam. This was all these changes were first reported by well, I don't know if it was first. But Sports Illustrated has a whole

article on it, and here's what they say. The bench press might be killed next. That's interesting because guys have gotten hurt doing that, and so you didn't wonder at what point was that going to become something where if it's costing these guys millions of dollars in their draft stock. I think I remember like the ohiuse States center Billy Price, it happened to him, and a lot of guys have just stopped doing it. Yeah, and so not not shocked to hear that, because you know there's a lot of

stake for these kids. Yeah, interesting, that's crazy. Jeff Foster, he's the president of the National Football Scouting Uh, that's who puts on the combine. He said, it's easier to name the things that have not changed, and that's true. One of my favorite things to do with Combined is to talk to like the Peter kings Um, all of those guys that have been covering this thing since it began. There were eight of them. There were eight media members at the first combine, and now there's two years ago

there were over three credential media. It's crazy. So that'll that'll kind of be the lay of the land. And then Thursday is the last day that really most of the media and coaches and all of those are there because that Thursday night, UM, and there we mean in the convention center talking to the media because Thursday night begins the on the field testing. Something new this year

is it is now in primetime. This is when you know that the sports world is, um not busy, because we now have grown not well they're grown men in shorts running around over not over as mini bags anymore. They are running over bags and just jumping and yep,

the underwear underwear Olympics. It's been Olympics. Yes, So that'll be starting on Thursday night, and then you'll see content all throughout Friday and Saturday, UM, in Sunday going and then I believe the comment officially in Monday or Tuesday of that following week with the DBS correct, We don't know Sunday. I think it's Monday. I think there are three hundred participants that go through this thing. The DBS

are the final group to go. UM. But by that point, as content, as content collectors, we've got what we need in h do you have here? Here's my question, do you have the biggest combine? Pet peeve? I do? Where do I begin? Now? What's yours? Mine is every player gets asked who have you met with? Or who have you spoken to? And it gets treated as if it's

like this like breaking news. It's like, Okay, so and so player just said that they've met with the Panthers, right, and it's like they're going to meet with pretty much everybody, and it just gets people make such a big deal out of it, and it's like he's met with and it's like they're going to meet with them. They're acting me with him here, they'll probably be with him in it. And I mean there's so many Yeah, there's so many formal informal running into in the hallways. Like I hate that.

I think my pet peeve is are you the best blank in this draft? It's asked a lot of the combine. There's six or seven podiums and those are where the top players from each position group go. And it never fails. They are asked, are you the best quarterback in this draft class? What do you expect him to say? No? I think two is a little better. No. They all

go in. But then it kind of makes them look like cocky and and so if you were coaching a prospect, like let's say you were representing, how would you coach them to answer that question? I think I would just look back and be like, why, yes, I think I'm very talented. I'm not like I think I would. I mean, if I was no only coach, I would just say just answer the question and just you know, yeah, I think I'm super talented. I think here are my strengths and move on. If if I am, ever, I will

never ask that question. And if someone that works for me ask that question. Yeah, That's the thing about it too, is like all these guys are coached really hard on how to answer these questions. Like it's a big part of the deal is, you know, preparing them for two interviews, one with the media and then the other with the you know, the football staff that's going to be having. How long did those go? Like fifteen minutes? Now where they get with these guys. So it's a lot of

coaching that's going on. Here's what kind of questions you're gonna face, Here's how we want you to answer them. And that's kind of a frustrating thing for what we do too, is feeling like a lot of these things are so rehearsed and you're here in the same kind of thing over, but the same question gets asked year after year. I'm like, guys, it's just nice when the guys are comfortable enough in their own skin to be themselves.

I think that's obviously you have to be able to represent yourself in the right way still, but that's always really refreshing when the guys at the podium and he's confident and he knows that he's, you know, not worried about tripping over his words. He's just being himself. And unfortunately that's a little rare. This. I do kind of like though, when like an offensive lineman or a defensive lineman, they are huge human beings and you can tell they're

just a little nervous. There's just something about that that is so delicate, and I just want to beat on the people that take advantage of it, because there are some people that will then kind of lean in and be like, okay, like he's nervous. He might say something here, I want to stop it. Does do they still do their wonder lick test? They do? So, speaking of which I've pulled up a sample wonder lick, what a segue, and I think it's time that we ask a question. Okay,

I'm ready. I had no idea the sample wonder lit question. This is real, Yeah, this is this is happening. Gertrude is taller than Janelle. Nancy is taller than Gertrude. Who is the tallest Nancy? Yeah, it's not fair. Her name is Nancy. Nancy's always the tale. Uh, this is a lot, all right. Art is to wall as coffee cup is to table table. Yeah one was like that. I mean it was a five there's it was a multiple choice and like couboard was the answer like covered was one

of the choices. Okay, so it is multiple choice. Well that one was. I don't know. I think there are these are all like sample different things. It is the wonder like is more so how quick can you think? Not how difficult the question can be, because I think there's it's it's it's a timed test and as far as you get in the test. Also it goes into the score. Do we know who on the Panthers roster

who had the highest that I should have asked. I should have asked this question before the podcast began, but that wouldn't be as fun. We'll look that up to be determined. It's always offensive lineman or a quarterback. Yeah, typically I could see Taylor Motlin have scoring having scored extremely. I agree with that, Taylor, but I bet gvrst Yeah, I mean obviously the IVY League. Yeah, you'd expect. So does that seg into the next thing or do we need to keep moving? No? Segway away? Do we ever

keep moving on this? Right? So Ye says, we're talking about these drills? Do you guys know who had the most bench, the fastest forty, the fastest cone time, three cone drill time. I don't know, I don't know anything. Did Nick Fadden have the he's talking you're talking about Panthers, only Panthers. I thought you were talking about him. I thought this was a joke. His name. I was like, WHOA, where's Matt coming with this joke? So, Matt, do you want to take a guess which Panther has the fastest

forty ever? Offensive defense? He's offense. He's on the team currently. Okay, I guess see him. See, I don't know, I don't know anybody. Dante, he's close Curtis. Curtis Curtis had a four three one, Dante had a four three two the next year, and Dantes was tied for the fastest in that in that season. Oh that's a good one. So how about this, This one's funny. The guy with the fastest shuttle drill time, also known as the five ten five drill five yards ten yards five yards is former

quarterback Randy Fasani. Two. Definitely would have guessed that. Well. I was really excited about that. I mean like what, like, how how is the fastest shuttle drills? I mean like how is he almost a like two tenths of a second faster than DJ Moore? Quick? Yeah? I don't. I don't have a great memory for Panthers history with different combine events, but there are a few over the years that I that do stick out. Like John Ross running the forty ran like like a four two. I mean

that that was a huge hype around just him. I remember Um Griffin, the Seahawks long backer, doing the bench. That was like a huge thing. I remember there was like one hare was a crowd of people watching it, and that was a really cool thing. So every once in a while, there like McCaffrey put on his show when he did you know, he ran like the receiver routes in addition to do all the stuff out of the backfield, and everybody was just in awe of how

he caught the football. So, yeah, it was usually a moment or two each year where somebody does something where it's like, Okay, damn, this is the moment of this year's combine. Do you like that? Let's do this, Let's let's go into We're going to get more into this

on Tuesday when we're there. But who were some names that you max or will have been seeing constantly come up in these mock drafts, just for you guys out there that want to pay attention to do the combine and want to know who Who should we be googling and all of these things are looking for who? Yeah, we did our first mock draft report, um, which fans can expect on Panthers dot Com really all the way up through the draft at this point. Usually once a week we will crank that out and just give you

an update on what the mock drafts are saying. And really there are two names right off the bat that have been connected to the Panthers significantly more than any others. And that's Auburn defensive tackle Derrick Brown and Clemson linebacker slash safety hybrid Isaiah simmons Um, both really good players. You look at the Panthers defense and you know, especially with the loss of Luke Kickley and kind of how

they're going to reshape things. Either one of those guys, you could see why they would make a lot of sense. But um, very early in the process. But those are the two Caroline far and away that you see time and time again, and I've seen Kin Law from South Carolina another. I mean, you're definitely looking it seems like defensive side of the ball, both you know, kind of on the line and linebackers since retired. I think some of them might have to do with just the way

the board seems to be setting up. I mean, now, again granted it's very early, but generally I would say the most value that matraft provide and is at least giving an idea of what like the top players is going to be. They might not have the team's right and the orders is never really all that close, but the actual players that are going to be selected, you can feel pretty sure that's that's what we're gonna be looking. This is the top ten guy. This is especially in

the top ten. So where the Panthers are at seven, it's pretty clear there's only six teams ahead of them right now, so there's not that many names you've got to get through before the Panthers are on the clock. So as far as just the type of the caliber of player and which player is going to be in that seven to ten range barring trades, of course, um yeah, I mean I think you know, Brown and Simmons are

right in that wheelhouse. Um, and they happen to be defensive players, which you know what's certainly help and Panthers need help on offense too. But um, the way things are shaking out right now defensively, that's that's where those prospects seem to be lining up, at least so far. The thing I love about the combine is this is when obviously mock drafts just start to take over. And I love to hear the experts so called when you go ask them, all, right, who do you think it is?

They will sound so confident that I walk away thinking, you know, maybe they're right. And then you go talk to the next expert and he has something totally different, but he one believes in it. I think that's the most interesting part about the combine is how many different mock draft experts that this is all they do and this is what they live for. They're not Yes, they cover the season, but there are at certain entities people that only do this, and it is it's fascinated to see.

And like you said, they normally get the position right like the writing on the wall for maybe the first and second round, but anything after that. And some of these guys do all round drafts. It's crazy, like you're What's also funny to me, though, is how much like groupthink eventually comes into play with mock drafts, and all of a sudden, it's like everybody just sort of agrees with certain slots for players, and invariably no one is

really ever close to being right. Like I think, like the highest percentage anyone who really have for like the first round and really get like every pick is like no higher like or something like that. It's just you can't anticipate the trades and all the movement. It totally jacks up the whole thing. But you look at enough of these mock drafts, and so many of them are

very are really similar with who they have slotted. It just sort of becomes like accepted, thinking of, oh, yeah, this guy is gonna go to Jacksonville or Indianapolis wherever it is. And that's always been kind of interesting to me because something that's so random and we know is going to have so many different moving pieces, a lot

of them end up sort of looking similar. Yeah. I did a piece last year right before the draft with kind of like a roundup of where all the mock drafts, like the total number and the guy that was mocked to us the most was Cleveland Ferrell, right, who went way before anybody thought he was gonna want to top five to the Raiders, Right, and then you had Montes Sweat, Yeah, and then Andre Dillard and those are the names again that you heard over and over over and over. Right. Yeah,

it's always been interesting to me. Brian Burns. It is. This is when it starts to get really fun. But in the spirit of uh, the Combine and the three hundred participants that go there, and that there's no way anyone knows them all, We're gonna play a little game. So welcome to the big segment in this podcast called Combine Participant or Rapper. I'm going to say a name and give you three facts about this person. You have

to tell me is that person a rapper? Or is that person participating in this year's NFL comm All the facts are true? Uh, yeah, they're true. You'll see define and true. Some of them are skewed a bit, but I'll explain them for the back end, but they're I mean, yeah, they're pretty much true. Pretty much all right. So the first one, our first contestant, Contestant number one is Kin Duckworth.

His friends call him k Dot. He's engaged to his high school sweetheart, and when asked about his combine diet and how he's getting ready, he said, don't talk to me about no raisin brand Wheati's stop it. When talking about his breakfast of what he's been preparing, how he's been preparing for the combine. Is that a rapper or an NFL Combine participant? I mean, a little rapper is not preparing for the combine. But I'm pretty sure there isn't.

What is it, Ken Duckworth, Kin Duckworth, I'm thinking rapper? Rapper? Definitely you're wrong Kendrake Lamar Ducklett. He did say the quote, don't talk to me about no raising brand, we stop it. But it wasn't about the combine. That's where it is. I'm trying. That's where the lives are coming from. I felt like that would be a really great verse, so

I figured it. Well. He said that in an interview when when he loves sugary cereal apparently, and so someone said, well, what about like some healthy some raising He said, raisin brand. I'm talking to me about no raisin brand. Stop it, which was just a great line, all right. The second one, Lavante Bellamy, he is called the Monster his hometown Indianapolis. Yea. And on the side, he's a money man. That's what he's what he likes to talk about money. He's a

money man. Combine participants, m say to combine participants, He's a combine participates. No rapper, here's the thing. No rapper has come from Indianapolis. Yes, that she's not going to go like straight back, like back and forth. So I think she's gonna try to throw us off. Two rappers rock paper scissors. I think I'm okay. I feel like that's a rock paper scissors I was getting changed. I was getting two into my own head. He is called he's a running back from Western Michigan and they called

him the touchdown monster. And the reason he's a money he's a money man. He was a finance major. Okay, okay, Number three Derrington Evans. His nickname is l A. He can solve in a roomix cube and he had a major image change in. What school did he go through? I didn't say, but I thought I could trick her into saying, Virginia Tech. What do you think, rapper? I think it's a rapper too. I'm going three for three and rappers player. He's a player. I feel like you

could see everyone can't he's cheating. He running back from app State. We got to get the local. One thing he's major image change in he cut his dreads. He had dreads the first years in college. He cut his dreads for his last two years. So there we go, all right. The next one, she would have said app State, we would have gotten it. Yeah, the next one, Yeah, my bad. Aubrey Graham, his father played in the CFL. He was a child actor and he's already beaten many

records of some legends. He's already up there on the record. Rapper. Yeah, that's a rapper the record that you're playing off the record? Yeah, record. Do you know who what rapper? This is Aubrey Graham. Yeah, it's Drake, Aubrey Drake Graham. His father did not play in the CFL, but his father was in the music industry in Canada. So I kind of like, you know, like same, Yeah, you know, I lied on that one, but it was kind of the same. So it's on the spirit of the game, as you said. I mean,

there's exactly all right. The last probably should have known Drake's name was Aubrey Graham though. Yeah, well that's what I thought. That one was going to be too easy the score, right, I have three, I've only got I got the first one right, and then that one. All I know is me and Will have the same. I've got to be honest. You just have to say it. Last I thought Will would be terrible at this game. That's just because that's just because you think it's gonna

be terrible at everything, obviously, but he's not. You have to Will, He's not terrible at everything. Okay, you have a chance to catch me on this one, Max, So you better watch out? All right, So here we go. Jonathan Lynn dale Kirk from Cleveland, Ohio. He's the youngest participant and in two thousand nineteen was that was his breakout here on Breakout Your twenty nineteen rapper Rapper Player the Baby, Yeah, let's go the baby. Wait, the babies

from Cleveland. So it says he's from Cleveland. I thought that. I thought that was really good because he's from Charlotte. But I think he was born in Cleveland. And you have to believe everything you read on the internet, so kind of like kind of like Steph Curry, that's what he said. Where was he born near Akron? Interesting? All right? Last one? Oh, all I can do is tie wheel at this point. All right, Um, Jeff Gladney, he's from Texas. They call him the Missile and his favorite animal is

a frog. Well, why don't you got first? He's a player. He went to TCU. Oh you're I mean, you do feel pretty confis a player? You went to TCU. See. I was hoping that whatever he could say, I could say the other that's the only chance I have to catch him. But he's right, it's a player. I'm gonna say a rapper just in case it's a players. Did you know that or did you just go off my Yeah? I thought that would give it away to all right, so what it will just win yet major upset. Wow,
