Welcome to this episode of the Group Chat. The players are back and they're in Spartan, South Carolina for training camp, and the arrivals are always extravagant. So we talk all the observations that we saw from when the players arrived here at Watford, including an extremely long conversation about the Lion King. It's literally the same movie, just with like

updated technology for the animations of it. We then run through some of our favorite arrivals that we've ever seen or even heard of from not only Panthers camp, but from all across the NFL. The best Panthers arrival is when Curtis Samuel got dropped off by his mom. And finally we end with a brand new segment called That's What He Said, where we're talking about the biggest quotes

that we enjoyed hearing from media availability. Shack Thompson talked today you can hear just this the sense of you know, he comes in with Cameron Artist Pain and he realizes that, you know, these guys are in veteran roles. Now you'll hear all this and more on this episode of the Group Chat. You've been added to the Group Chat with your friends. Caroline can Max Sensen and Will Brian welcome everyone to Spartanburg, South Carolina. Because the Panthers are officially

at training camp. That means we are officially at training camp. And our radio studio looks quite different than what we normally get to sit in. It's white walls, white blinds, white desk, and a nice gray carpet. So we seem a little bland on the podcast. It's it's our surroundings. Okay, it's not our faults. Of two of us are sitting, one of us is standing. I'll let everybody guess which what's standing. It's an interesting dynamic right now as we get in to our second group chat here. But it

doesn't even matter what the surroundings are. There's no way we can be dull because today was an exciting day. All the players arrived for training camp and I'm glad that we're not having to talk about how someone didn't show up. Yeah, that's a good thing. Never never a good thing. If you've got any sort of holdout issue. There was almost everyone can relax. Brian Burns signed everybody's president accounted for ready to go. Yeah, we did get

close there. Brian Burns literally signed he actually showed up and then went and signed and so he's here. Marty Herney talked about that earlier today, just how they knew they were going to get it done, but it just took them till the last minute. He said it was a language issue. Somebody on Twitter was funny, it was like, dang, we put it in Spanish again. They got they got that sorted out and now we're all good to go. That guy on the pod, that was a really good

joke right there, but um, it wasn't exciting days. We're going to kind of kick this off starting about just observations because rolling up to training camp like this is something that guys can plan for. They know this is coming, get your car washed, look clean, rolling into the parking lot and then whatever you pull out of your car is fair game. Because to set the scene of how this all goes about, these players, they come into the parking lot, there's a group of media at both entrances

of the building, so you're not getting away. You're not gonna be able to like sneak anything into these dorms, like it's going to be photographed, talked about on the news, talked about on our podcast, like everything is fair game. So we're gonna go observations from today, and I'll go first because this is one that I think could go under the radar. But we moved into our dorms as well. Okay, they are bland, about as bland as this room that we're in. However, this white looks a lot cleaner than

the white that we have in our dorms. But Christian McCaffrey, he's been here before, he gets it. He knows that we need to jump out of bed. A rug would be nice to land on. Homeboy walked in there with a rug coming out. It was just so off the wall to me, I was like, you know what I should have asked? There is nothing colder than the floors of a Wafford dorm room at six am in the morning. I can attest there's nothing colder in the world. I've

never experienced it. And it was sixty degrees this morning when we got up to go. It was like very just comfortable out there. I never used that word to describe Sparti bird weather, but it was quite nice. Yeah, yeah, so that was mine a rung. It could have gone under the radar. That was not something that you guys necessarily noticed. But when he I mean it was a big rock to this was one over his shoulder, Like might not fit in the room, It might be running

up the walls a little bit on the side. Yeah, he must have a pretty big room with that size rug because I noticed the same thing. I was like, this is huge. He's now on the first floor though, Yeah, he said, so maybe those those first floor rooms are you know, you know, deluxe sized. I did ask KK today, like, be honest, you are not sleeping in a twin bed while here, because that's what you think. That's what I'm sleeping in. That's what I ryone sleeping. Yeah, these guys

will ship down king size beds. I mean that's the veteran move. Yeah, he said, rookies have to sleep in twin but that other bets can order beds. Yeah, yeah, I mean that these offenses, like can you imagine being sis I'm just like our defensive line in twin beds. What the other veteran move, owned by one Preston Edwards, is to take the bed out of the other room, move the entire frame into your room, and then put

your mattress across both. Okay, but that would work. Um, but we don't have that at the Girl Storms there's not another room, like everyone has a twin bed. So I'm glad that you guys have that option to move that in there, and I hope you do it. Yeah. So mine was Christian McCaffrey showing up with a very large rug that I'm jealous of. Let's go, will what's yours? Um? Chris Hogan walking in as you said, you know you have to go buy all of the media members um

on on the one side. Somehow he managed to get by without anyone seeing this until one of the three of us pointed this out again. I won't say who um that one of his bags is a blue Nike bag with New England Patriots paraphernali. I heard that. He didn't even realize and he looked at it and he was like, oh, sorry, guest. Yeah. We we yelled out to him, like, hey, we should get you a new Duffle bag and he was like what and he looked at his other bag. We were like, no, the big

Duffle one, and he looked back. He was like, oh my gosh. Not to mention he had a TB twelve book bag. You're pretty sure he's wearing in the photo gallery which we posted today. But you know that it is funny. Some guys did get out of their cars and like maybe they have a deal with Nike or under Armo or whatever, and like they had a bag that had another logo on it and they made the intern carry it. They're like, I can't walk through the

media with this bag, Like you have to carry it. Um, that's something that us, as high profile people are sponsors, are just so mad at us. So mad. All right, Max give um. I'll just go with Gerald McCoy's outfit today, which was phenomenal. He I'm sure our listeners have seen images of this by now, but it was this like crew Nex sweatshirt that had the cartoon version of the original Lion King characters on it and it was just spectacular. Just yeah, Simba, I think he clearly won best dress

to Cam. I don't know what you call what Cam was wearing today, but it was something. I'm giving it to Gerald McCoy for the winner of best dress at a rival day. Yeah, I mean Cam gave us something to talk about though, Yes he did, which is right up his alley. He showed up. If if you have not seen the photos. I'm not going to ruin it for you. You You just need to go look at drip com on Twitter right now and and and they're on the website. So just go look. If you haven't seen it,

you're welcome because that is quite the get up. But Jereal McCoy, the have you guys seen the New Lion King? I haven't seen you. I asked him too. I was like, what are your thoughts and New Lion King? Assuming that if you're gonna wear a shirt like that, you had to have seen it, and he said, yeah, with all my kids, we definitely went and saw it, saw it, and yeah, he said he liked it. I hear that it's it's literally the same movie, just with like updated

technology for the animations of it. Is that true? That's like it is different about it. So Tomow and Poomba are the only characters that are different as far as like what they say. But it is like it's the Lion King. I mean, you can't carbon it's it's the Lion King. But the animation is just unbelievable. And I think being in video production, like having that be my background,

I was just I was geeking out. I was sitting there just like, oh my gosh, Like and I think if you go back and you look at how they like the fur, and then you know they I'm gonna show my like nerd side. But they figured out how to do for an animation from like Monsters, inc. So the first one, Suley was like the only one that had for And now you move into like now they're doing a whole movie with like all this fur, and

it's just it really is insane. Like when you look up close with their faces, like I think that's real life. Yeah that sounds but it is weird to see a real lion talk. Yeah, that's the thing. Well, like they don't talk, so it looks like real life. It looksn't look at all like it. No, No, I feel like there's a spectrum they could have done from like cartoon to real life and somewhere like in the middle, but they went like full the full real life. It really

is very, very impressive. But to Mona Pumba, I think they're more funny. In the new version. They just kind of like spiced it up a little bit, whereas it was and it was like those are the only parts already kind of spicy. If I remember exactly, and maybe I'm not remembering it correctly because I was so young, but it was a little bit more modern. The references that they were making were a little bit more model. Did the saddest scene I don't want to talk about

that to make you cry in this one. It was one of those where I just didn't want to watch it again and you just get so sad and you know it's coming, but I didn't some people. I'm sure we're off on a tangent. Everyone welcome to the group. This was not on here, but this is what happens. But for that scene, you knew it was coming, and I didn't want to go back and watch the first one. I just wanted to go in and see, like what

do I remember? What do I not remember? Although I will say everyone, I was in the popcorn line and I missed the very very beginning, missed the song. NA miss that. I mean, that's the whole thing. I don't want to talk about it. Yeah, that's that's I know. What's the popcorn worth? It couldn't have been worth it.

I don't know. It's pretty good, except for in the middle of the movie, like we flipped it somehow was flipped and in the air, and all the popcorn was in front of us on the flipped and then the popcorn itself was younger in my bag. I don't get a bucket. You don't get the bag of popcorn. When you go you get the bucket of popcorn. It's like a dollar more. It's like Starbucks. They just rope in.

It's all expensive. But yeah, it was sitting there. We flipped it and UM, I will not be on my phone in a movie, but I'll probably spill a drink or in this case, popcorn. So there's your tangent. Now we will come back and thank you Jerry McCoy for wearing a Lion King shirt so that we could go off on that tangent. But it was it was just fun to see the guys show up and I just have them back. Wasn't it nice to to roam around

to kind of see the layout of training camp. This is my first training camp here, so seeing how that all laid out, UM was really really, really cool. But I think what was interesting and maybe I'm spoiled because when I was in Indianapolis, we always had at least like one person show up in a ridiculous car and like want the media tention out of there. So I this was actually just like stories that even I heard

when I was in Indie. We had a couple of players while I was there for three seasons, like really show up um in some interesting either outfits, like there was always the like original like going camping and you know, dressed like that. But um, Reggie Wayne, if anyone out there UM has paid attention at all when he arrives at camp, He's done some outrageous things like he arrived one year in a helicopter and then in an yeah,

in an Indie car. Um he hired a dump truck and put like Wayne like construction on the side of it and came in like a hard hat because they got to go to work. Um. He showed up with an entire like military infantry, like a very large group of military or like yeah, and was saying, like I respect what they do. They work so hard. We need to bring the same mentality. Like it wasn't a bit when he showed up. And so the media they don't really care about football. They were just there because everyone

wanted to see how he was going to show up. Yeah, that's there has not been anything like that I can recall and at least my time with the Panthers, no one where it's been like, oh, we gotta see what X player is going to do this year, Like and I saw, of course, uh down in Jacksonville Jalen Ramsey with the brink struck and man, this year, um, the best the best Panthers arrival. I can. I think it's toime to be tough to top is when Curtis Samuel

got dropped off by his mom. It was just so like adorable and in the NFL to have a player get dropped off, I mean that was just that was awesome. Um. Close second would be I want to say j Klein backing into another car as he was pulling in, just because that was hilarious and like you said, like Caroline painted the picture, like all the media that's there, imagine all these cameras, Like every movie these guys make is being like captured, so like to not have the best

parking execution, that's that's a rough. That's rough. And then on that same note, it was dramatic for its ability to avoid the media for the last two years. Julius Peppers, I don't know if you know he's a pretty big guy. Now, was that Julie Julius Julius Fraser Peppers, So somehow he's he was. He didn't come the night before he came and somehow got into the dorms and nobody knew he was host. He just he just appeared. Nobody saw him get in. What I kind of loved today was some

people thought that Luke Kikley bought everyone golf carts. Everyone. He did not buy them golf carts. He arranged for them to rent, said golf carts that are around here. But I thought that was pretty funny. I was like, oh, go ahead, look, oh okay, you rented this. Still, go ahead, good job, thank you presenting that up for your players. That's very very nice. But um, yeah, we didn't have anyone showing up in a helicopter. Greg Little did show up in a brand new car, doesn't even have a

tag on it yet. He was pretty proud of that. But oh yeah, there's always nice cars. It's always great when you like, you know, what's a player rolling in or like, I mean, do you remember because you've got

like a Maserati and then like a Honda Civic. I was wondering what car you're going to Not a Honda Accord because those are slick and all right to camera, maybe let's go, let's go, I mean, and then today that I enjoyed when pretty early on the entire media group is all around this this car with tinted windows, no one can really see who's in it, and he pulls up right in the front and it's just just

sitting there, just just humming. And then all of a sudden, it's like Luke Kickley is going to talk on the other side. Every run runs away and DJ Moore like waits till everyone leaves, and then pops out with his new his new incredibly great tidy sweatshirt for the cat pack, and of course we're right there to take the pictures. Oh my gosh, everyone had waited. He waited. I will say one thing at the coals that we did talk

about was t Y Hilton has two Lamborghinis. One is electric blue and the other one is lime green, and we would he would bring them both the camp, but like switch off on an off day, he'd go, like switch it out there. Anything worse than getting sick of your blue Lamborghini and you're ready for your green one. Exactly, so we would always try and guess is a blue or green that is going to show up him, But just you know, highly realistic things that we should be

able to obtain. Sometimes I get sick of the color of my car, so I just like dented on something, so I just let it get super dirty so it slightly looks a different color. There we go. But those are observations from today as far as watching players come in. But what also happened today first day of training camp is availability. We were able to talk to some players here from coach here from GM today and so we're

introducing a new segment called That's what he Said. So we're gonna run through the media availability, pick a quote that we like the best, um and just talk about it a little bit. So I went first on the observations. I'm not gonna go first here, so not everyone at once. It's either Will or Max who's going first. I'm going first? All right, here we go. All right, I'll go first. I'm gonna go with Curtis Samuel, who I thought was

fantastic and talking to the media today. He's just uh ouzing confidence right now and which is awesome to see from a young guy. Um, let's play this clip a little bit of what Curtis had to say to the media today. What even once he right, I feel like a bunch of peo've been telling me I got bigger, but I don't know. I feel like I got faster, So I don't know. That's kind of scary, right, Yeah. So I think you get a taste right there from Curtis's He's just full of swagger right now, and I

love it. Wide receivers need to be Yeah, you're absolutely right, you've got to have that as a wide out, and he's clearly more confident, he's more comfortable, and like you said, if he's out there and healthy, which is a question for him still, he's still got to prove that he can be durable enough to play a full season in this league and do it consistently. But if he's out there, you best believe he's gonna make something happen. And I just I love it. I love where Curtis Samuel is

at right now. Uh, And I think there's big, big things to come for him. And that's still a position that's just completely wide open as far as like who's going to really emerge out of that group. So it was fun. It was fun to hear him be goodbye. Not even I won't say overly confident, but just it was a little bit surprised. Just the right amount go ahead, go ahead, you need that, all right, you're up well.

Shack Thompson talked today. He talked this on this day last year, and um, you know, he was asked about Luke, asked about Thomas Davis leaving. But really, you know, the thing that struck me was kind of near the end he talked about, um, what you know, how how he's getting older, you know, and what this camp really means showing up to here we'll take a look in at this time is fun. I mean I was thinking to just drive him down. Cat was like, man made this

is our fifth year. Like we came in together, we still here together, and it was just like it was remarkable. I'm just happy I'm still here. You can hear just this the sense of you know, he comes in with Cameron Artist Pain and he realizes that, you know, these guys are are in veteran roles now, you know, and he's going to be called upon to to be a leader on this defense alongside Luke, Um and I think

he's really trying to embrace that. Credit to the guy who asked that question, by the way, that brought out such a profound answer from Shack. I don't know who it was, just saying it was you. You might he asked to leave the group chat. You're really setting yourself up here in Max too. Am I going to get an early department? Yeah? Well was kicked out last week. Yeah you're up next, Max. There no, Max, that was such a great question. Um, But I think the leadership

aspect of this entire team is interesting. Uh, it looks completely different. There's a lot of youth, and when you have a lot of youth, sometimes even those better and voices, can you know, they can be drowned out a little bit by this new culture that's here. So I'm interested to see how that's going to play out. I am going to go with one of those veterans. Today, Luke Keikley took to the podium and sweet, sweet, innocent, wonderful, good boy Luke Keekley dropping f bombs all over the

place and all are nothing. And he was asked today about that because I think a lot of people were surprised, like does he even know that word. Okay, So he was asked about the F bombs and all or nothing, and here's what he had to say. That was a voiceover that there's a voice over. They must have did something. But yeah, that's what happened. Now. Man, it's a game

everyone's having. It's intense out there, so sometimes stuff slips every once in a long If that's not the most Luke Keikly like wit doy response I've ever heard, come on, that was pretty good little voice over. Actually he came prepared for that question and how he was He was ready. But I love it. I absolutely love that that's how he approached it. I just think they all are nothing. That's what it did. It just and in his response, which he's like, it's a it's a game. It's it's

a heat at the moment. It's intense, and that's what we see now you're just hearing it. So there you go, people out there that we're surprised. The thing about Luke everyone has always says since got here is he's a like flip the switch guy. So yeah, the flip gets switch gets flipped, and that's that's what happens. I even think you saw a like lesser version of that. I don't think you can't see all of Luke. Yeah, he's gonna be mad, but we're saying that. But yeah, it's

it gets it gets worse. It's not not the language people, just the aggression. We're just talking outwards as physical games, not flying around a million miles an hour hitting guys as hard as he can. Yeah, he's not just this nice guy that rents golf cards for his teammates. And it is gonna it's gonna be interesting. Max and I've been talking about this, you know. There there's all these things and they kind of asked a little bit of today.

There's these traditions, and there's these times for these speeches, and there's these just things that have always happened and have always been done a certain way because of veterans like Ryan Kleil and Thomas Davis and these guys that have been here for decades literally, and you know, now they're all gone, Who's going to be doing this stuff? I think it was a great sign today Lucas here. You know, I'm I'm taking care of my guys, were

taking care of this group. I'm going to be the one doing that, So you know, what are who are going taking on these roles as we move forward. You know, who's gonna be the one, you know, doing that speech before they go out and on on the field. Who's gonna be doing all these different stuff? And I think

Luke is obviously taking a step forward to that. Yeah, well, there's plenty to look forward to a lot of storylines that are going to play out all through training camp that we will be watching, we will be talking about in the Group Chat. Um, and if you ever want to join this conversation, we're all on Twitter. Please hit us up with what you want to hear about, something you heard about that we can talk about on this podcast. So pretty much create content for us. That's what we're

asking for, um. But now just join the conversation and whenever you want to a lot to talk about, because football is finally back. And if you're going to say the football is not back because it's the preseason, it's just training. Can't get out of here. Football is back, the players will be on the practice field. So much to talk about. But thank you so much for joining us on this episode of the Group Chat. We will talk to you again next week.
