¶ Welcome and Father's Day Reflection
Welcome to Hapae Kayuwa Podcast with Jun Senesak, episode 539! Hey, what's going on, everyone? Jun here with Hapa Eikaiwa. Happy Father's Day to all the fathers and father figures out there listening. I hope your family is showing some love today, whether it's a nice homemade meal. a handmade card, or just a little time to relax for yourself. It's kind of hard to believe, but this is actually my fourth Father's Day. Four years ago.
I had no idea what I was getting myself into. I remember holding my firstborn in my arms, thinking, wow, I'm officially a dad now. And somehow, in the blink of an eye, I'm now surrounded by two energetic little kids who fill my life with chaos, laughter, and joy every single day. So today...
I want to take a few moments to reflect on what fatherhood has been like for me and what it truly means to me. Parenting is a wild ride. One day, a baby is born. And just like that, In the U.S.,
Most parents are sent home from the hospital after only two or three days. I still remember that drive home. I was gripping the wheel, driving ridiculously slow. getting mad at every car that sped past us on the freeway. It felt like I was driving for the first time again, only this time with the most precious cargo in the backseat.
One day, a child is born and suddenly a small human being. It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. It doesn't matter. In America, most of the parents are in the hospital from 3,5,2,3 days. I can remember the drive when I was home. The handle on the handle. But... From the beginning, I told myself that I wanted to be there for my kids. I didn't want to just be the dad who showed up for birthdays and bedtime stories.
I wanted to be present for the messes, the meltdowns, the first steps, the sleepless nights, all of it. I've always been the type of person who learns by doing, and parenting was no different. I didn't read all the books. I didn't know all the right answers. I just showed up every day, tried my best, and learned as I went.
What is the right thing to do? I didn't know what the right thing was. But every day I met them,精一杯努力し, learning and進んできました. I also feel incredibly lucky to be a parent in this era. We live in a time where dads can be more involved at home. It's not like the older generation where the father's role was strictly to go to work and provide financially.
I'm fortunate to have the kind of job that allows me to work from home so I can be there for those small but important moments. Making meals, reading books, and breaking up toddler fights over toys. Also, I feel a lot of joy in this era. I have lived a lot of joy in this era. I have lived a lot of family in this era.
That being said, I quickly learned that there's no such thing as perfect work-life balance when it comes to parenting. It's more like work-life compromise. I tried to keep the same workload after our son Ruka was born, but it didn't take long for me to feel stretched way too thin. I had to make a tough choice. Keep grinding at work.
or focus on raising our kids. And I chose the latter. I figured I've got the next 30 plus years to work. But this baby and toddler phase, that's a short window. And once it's gone, It's gone. I didn't want to miss it. My husband, Luca, was born after the same job, but I felt it immediately. It was a tough choice. It was a tough choice. Is it still going to continue to work? That's what I chose to do.
This is the time when the children are born with children. Once again, they will never come back. I didn't want to stop it. One of the biggest lessons I've learned is that parenting is a massive sacrifice. Your life shifts entirely. Before kids, I could sleep whenever I wanted, work late, travel spontaneously. Now, I'm in bed by 11 because I know I'll hear, Dada, pee-pee at 6 a.m. If I want to go out with my wife or friends, we have to plan ahead.
And if the preschool calls to say one of the kids is sick, I drop everything and go. It took me a while to accept this new reality. A part of me wanted to hold on to the life I had before. But the more I resisted... The harder it felt, I had to let go and embrace this new chapter.
But now, at 6 o'clock in the morning, I was able to sleep in the morning, and I was able to go to a trip. But now, at 6 o'clock in the morning, I was able to say, This new reality has been a lot of time. I had a lot of time for my life style. But I felt it was a lot harder.
¶ Parenting Challenges and Rewards
Even now, four years in, I still don't really know what I'm doing. I question myself all the time. Am I a good dad? Am I too strict? Too soft? Too much like a friend? I've lost my patience and raised my voice before, and the guilt that follows is real. But I've also laughed harder than ever, danced like an idiot in our living room, and cried tears of joy watching my kids grow. Parenting reveals parts of yourself you didn't know existed. Some... You're proud of. Others, you want to work on.
However, it is a hard time, but it is a hard time, but it is a hard time. This is what I've seen before, living in the living room, and I've seen a lot of tears in my life, and I've seen a lot of tears in my life. The child is the one who knows what I've seen before. What my kids have taught me is that happiness doesn't come from big milestones or accomplishments. It comes from moments, from silly jokes.
Bedtime giggles. Holding hands on a walk. And maybe being a parent doesn't automatically make you happier. But it gives your life meaning. It gives you purpose. A reason to wake up and try again. Even when you're exhausted, that's the true gift. So, it's possible that your parents are automatically able to be happy with you. That's what it is.
Being a dad is one of the most important investments I'll ever make. It's not always easy, and it's far from perfect, but it's meaningful beyond words. The relationship I have with my kids is something I want to nurture for the rest of my life. So to all the dads out there, wishing all of you a happy Father's Day.
It's the most important part of it. It's always easy, and it's not perfect, but it's not easy to express it. The children and the絆 are 私の人生でずっと大切にしていきたいものですすべての父さんたちへ父の日おめでとうございます Here we go to HAPA A-Kaiwa's podcast listeners. And we also use...
So you can create your own emojis in Slack. So there are some people that have put their company ID as an emoji. And some of them are like when they're children. Some of them were during a Halloween day. Some of them were in weird costumes. Some of them were. Yeah. So the secret squirrel emoji on Slack. And also I very often use the melting face emoji where you're kind of just like, that sort of.
oh God, this sort of emotion there. I use that pretty often. It's a nice sort of softer way of being like, dear God. Right, exactly. It gets a lot of feeling. it does i mean it is very appropriate in some situations you look at it and you're like that is exactly how i feel like my face is melting into the floor so i think those are my two most often used ones now at least in this job how about you
The stupid three little sparkles. I don't know why, but it, it just works, right? Like it just makes sense at the end of every message I have to send. I do the cherry blossom sometimes if. I feel like the cherry blossom is pretty neutral. Obviously, putting a heart after a message is a little bit girly or a little bit something you do with someone you're really close to. So I find that the more neutral ones, like the sparkle, the flower.
Sometimes like a little pig or something. I think those are kind of neutral ways. You have to explain the pig. How is a pig neutral? And I am very connected to my picky personality because I think I fit that bill pretty quickly, pretty fully. ¶ Host's Personal Emoji Reflections
My go-to ones are the smiley face with the sweat drop, the smiley face with red cheeks, and the one with tears coming down from laughing. Out of the three, I feel like I use the sweat drop emoji the most. For me, it's the perfect middle ground. Somewhere between that's funny and oops, that was kind of embarrassing. It softens the tone and adds a little personality to the message. Especially when something awkward or silly happens.
In these three, I feel like I'm using the most汗 with a smile emoji. In my opinion, this is, it's a laugh, and, oh, it's a little恥ずかしい, and it's just the middle of the feeling.
¶ Emoji Use in Messaging Friends
I usually try to include emojis when I'm messaging friends. I think they're a great way to get subtle feelings across, especially since it's not always easy to tell tone through text. A simple emoji can make a message feel more lighthearted or show that you're just joking.
Strangely enough though, I don't really use that many emojis when texting my close guy friends. Not sure why. Our messages tend to be short and straight to the point. I guess when you've known someone for that long, you don't really need to worry about being misunderstood or overly polite.
The simple emoji is a message with a lightness in the mood, or a joke with a message. It's strange. When you have a message with a friendly friend and a message with a message, you can't use a emoji. I don't know why it's not. The message is short and important. I think it's a lot of people who know who you are, or you have to worry about it, or you have to worry about it.
