See well built big what I'm saying, Yeah, built like a four truck. Yeah one, Tyrant smith Man, thanks for coming on the show. It's no problem gonna come on. I know you don't like to talk, especially the media people. We're not media people, your friends, we're real people. So anyway, we got you on the show.
We're gonna talk a little bit of football, but not much. Nate, We're gonn letting Nate talk about football, because you know, you guys have something in common. I had something in coming what you do now, So we'll talk a little bit of football and then we'll talk a whole lot about just life. Got hold on, who is that dude? Kurt already introduced, I'm not Smith intentionally, I'm waiting on my tweet to tweet. Come on, man, put me on now, man, I want to say tag. Yeah, I just retweeted the show.
Oh man, Sorry, So what's up man? How you doing good? Uh? You guys just kind of woke me up from the naturals? Now, sorry about That's all good. I got get some treatment right now for first practice starts get going. Okay, you're practicing today. Today's a VET day for me? That day? What is a VET day? Nate said he didn't, he's never even heard of that before. I thought so. When they said vet day, I'm like, man, they got dogs. I thought it's like a vet there. They say, nah,
the veterans. I'm like, then I saw a big dude walk out there. Dude, I saw some others. I was like, wow, it is really a veteran a couple of years ago ahead, you know, Wow, but hey, problem man, it puts time on your career when you if you can get those days, you know what, I'm gonna beating Nate to the punch. I'm gonna ask the first football question, do it? Do it? Who have you been the most impressed by defense training? Ki? No, overall? Overall? Yeah,
defensive or defensively? Who Who's Who's who's showing up that that kind of you were like, okay, all right, I say right now, I say Loyle Collins um else. He's been doing the heco job. He's really picked up along the way for us offseason, coming into camp for his right tackle spot, and he's been working hard for it and he's been showing it off every day. Yeah, he's showing his physical trade and showing that he's willing to
learn and wouldn't pick up any kind of things he can. Yeah, you're helping him out as he asking you for tips and he asked me all the time now, trying to continue to remind him every day. Yeah, patience in that right hand yep. Hey, but hey, you know what, and I'm gonna have to get his question. Tell us as far back as you want to go, if you want to go back to the elementary. How did you start and how did you start getting into football? When did
you find out that you love this game? Was going to dedicate yourself to being who you are today forwards this game well, and you can add anything to tremens if you want. Well. For me, I started football until late and so I got to high school. I wasn't able to play when I was younger. I was too big for pop warn or anything like that. And then I was also so when I got to high school,
started playing around, playing around a little bit. Then my sophomoreyere and my coach Pete Duffy, he kind of showed me along the way and kind of just show some different camps things like that and help me get to college. And once I got there, I kind of still trying to feel the way, so trying to get understanding the game. Then probably like my sophomore year until college. Is you talking about, man that sets right down straight? We want these people to know that they sucked a lot of state.
That's your brother's southern calf. Yeah. Um yeah. Like my sophomore year in college and started feeling like I could really do something with this and I'll just happy to go to college for you know, full scholarship, but started seeing like, really do something with this and started to really love the game and started really love when I was doing it. So after that, just that sis her, you came here. What peak were you in the draft for the California It was nice? Yeah, and then you
started out at right tackle. Now coming from right, I was mad when they moved to left. I'm like, he's dominant it right. I didn't know he was gonna be that dominant left. How when did you start feeling comfortable over that left? Um, let's see my second year when I moved over to the left. Um, you know, he tried me a little bit of left my first year when I was here and um, you know, Doug came
back in and um he took over the left. I was at right, still learning, and then they switched me over my second year and then Callahan, he helped me along the way. He took me after practice in between periods. He you know, he beat me down tide and you know I had left tackle enemy right and and then you know, still take you know what he taught me and still you know, trying to use it, you know, to this day. And then you know our coach now
he still uses it the same way too. So can I ask a dumb football question, ain't um other than I mean left and right, other than the footwork and having to go officsite directions? Is there much difference between the two positions and what you're responsible for. Uh, it's, you know, it feels different. It's you know, they're both had their different traits of them both sides. But you have this it's really hard to kind of switch from
what you do from one side the other. You have to twitch everything in your brain around and that's including plays and so. And you know nowadays you get both you know, the best pass records on both sides, and so it's kind of like this being on the same side. So if they ever some crazy notion Jason Garrett lost his head, Kellen Moore's in there and they wanted you to protect his blind side, they told you to go the right side, would be crazy. I'm sure else can
still take care of that job. But you know, anyway, we listened to our coaches whatever he want us to do. Back in my day, when you played right tacker, you played the Bears Christmas over. When you played on the left side, you get Prima Donna battle, really better athlete to be on that left side. But I still think to some cases you still have to be a better athlete to play that left tackle. Somebody's okay, but it's
kind of the game's changing changed. Yes, I agree, I agree, because you can get on the right side just just good athlete now. But boy, I'm talking about it in Dinodstaur days. That's how I went for us. Is Malik mad at you from the other day because you set him down a couple of times in practice that you know what, man? You know what I want? It was so funny to cause, you know, league trying to get better every day. You can see it in his attitude and when you kind of wow, that wasn't right. So
what do you like to do off the field? Man? And besides, you know, not shoot pool very well? He ain't that bad at you actually really good at pretty good um for the most part, kind of you know, hang out my son, um tracking some rests, play video games and then um hang out the dogs. How old you? How old your son's five? He's five? In video games? What kind of video games? You into? Everything? I just
don't play any sports games. I suck. Suck at sports games. Really, I felay, it's way too many controls, so you had to shoot him up type games. Yeah, game with anybody on the team, or just um a little bit with LC a little bit. And I tried to play with Madden. I just get frustrated, like every time. Really, yeah, better play your son now you can still be because a couple more years David Irwin got this game that he played, Siege. I think is that what he called Team Up? No,
it's like it would ah. He said, it's like real life because like if you get shot, you got to sit there and wait till the game's over before you regenerate. Nate was a Nate spent like five minutes just like, okay, wait a minute, explain this. Does this work? Because they that call of duty? You know you you you know, I watched them play that a little bit. You can just get wrapped back up almost. Oh yeah. But he said you go down in this game, you go down. So I was wondering, did you did you get off
into that a little bit? Uh? Oh no, I'm more of a I say, you're usually in call of duty? And I forgot what I was playing lately. Um, it's like Horizon or for Rising something like that, and the writing sign It was kind of like a venture game, but you shoot everything with a bone arrow. Okay, that's all you have as a bone arrow. Are you going to get like the big machines or whatever? And you're trying to figure out how they go through this whole thing?
I've seen, I've seen that game. Do you ever played like just random people? Uh? Yeah, I play on I play online to get like kind of confused and kind of just don't forget who's who, Like grant the auto, I just forget what's going on the same people. The world's too big. You got some animals, Yeah, you got three dollars. I got a great name pitbull, a little French massif, and then um, a little border Collie mix. So you can't just get one dog. Two got three
dogs and six breeds. But they they rescue dogs, is that right? Yeah? Oh well sept for one one of them. I didn't know about the whole rescue thing when I first got the Dallas and I bought them, and then I started kind of understanding in the whole rescue thing going on. The Dallas at the DFF Rescue and you know they helped me alone getting a couple of dogs I do have right now. And you said, a massif and what else? Um, a great dame pitbull and a border college. What is your great between you and a
massive and a great dame? What is your grocery bill? Like a week? Ain't that mad? It ain't that bad. It's just the Great Dame. She eats a lot. I still food from other dogs. Man, I bet your yard is plenty fertilized. They got the out side of the yard on the side. You're looking forward to getting back home, getting in your own beds, I really do. What is your favorite part about camp? It's uh, you know it's a thing. It's not so bad because everything is so
routine and it goes by a quick one blows. You're busy, don't you forget what day is? Roundhog day? Every day pretty much. And you know the bad thing is, you know, basically always so so great for everybody actually has big people and uh, but you know that at this time, you know, get closer to your teammates and you're working together, and um, it's always a great deal. You find more about you find out more about your teammates as you go along when you hear you, we're here for our
whole month? And who who? Who's your Who are your best friends on the team? Who do you hang out with outside of work? It's usually old line Yeah, yeah, occasionally you and Jeremiah whatever. All other options are exhausted. So hey, we need to get a nickname going. Nate started the nickname for H for h Zach. He calls him the President. Yeah. I got to man, why are you calling the president? They It seemed like he just
he didn't have to work on thathing. I don't know how I came with him, and I'm like this, this dude like the President. He got it all, you know, button right of his hand. So and I and coach people heard me saying, like a boy, the president the whoop ahead and it jumped. So I didn't change it. I ain't. I ain't learn his name, but I just out a year. I didn't even know that. I probably as said the President. And I said the kid that played right guard, Zack. I said, okay, Zack, yeah Zach.
But bro, I'm gonna tell you something, man, how do you stay humble knowing that? Uh? You one of the top players, especially offensive line, top players in the league. How does how do you stay humble? Who keep it you? How do you stay humble? It was just more of um, you can't pay, you don't really pay attention to outside noise, and keep you people are that you can't trust, keep
them close to you. And you know this game doesn't doesn't last forever, so you kind of kind of take every everything you can out of it and enjoy it because a lot of people can't be doing what you're doing right now, right now. Yesterday, one of my favorite guys, he smashed a couple of times. Malik, I ain't gonna talk about that, but when you just stop a guy cold blooded, man, I noticed you never say nothing, you know, like Jason Witten catch a touchdown the world, he letting
the world or you've sun you can't stop me. I mean you just that calm guy all the time. Man. Is it that you don't want to embarrass your teammates so that just ain't your game? Um? You know, usually I'm not now here embarrassing anybody. It's usually just for me just trying to do better, do better at my job, and get better at my job whatever. And that's basically
it is. And I'm you know, hopefully our teammates getting better, you know, and it's a time for the turn on where you want to you know a little bit that selfishness comes out where you excited when you made this something good. And that's that's game day. That's not enough time to do it best in your team. Has everybody trying to get better out there something and some people's like in some people, you know, everybody's different. That's yeah, that's the way I kind of do it. Some game
days are a little more trash talking going on. I still don't say anything. It's just more you know that person whoever you know, you feel it, you know, can you look at them and know mentally you've you defeated them like they know they're done for the day. You know, Sometimes you can't feel it, and U sometimes I think the game is so tired you can't recognize it. Who talks the most trash on the Cowboys? I don't know. I usually don't even pay I swear to you, I
don't tute it out. Yeah, it's got to be a receiver or a corner. It's gonna be damn when Jason in there, you can hear them, ain't whether you're guessing you can hear these two guys. Uh, he will getting where he's getting a little more vote, because sometimes he will get so far down the change you'd be like, come on, man, you know but I had those type guys too, So I'm with you. You let it go because I used to be so tired brought to I had,
Like I told quit, I got forty five plays. Either I can do him on the field, I could do it talking either way, I ain't gonna be able to do you know what I'm saying. Yeah, well, man, we know you gotta go. You gotta go get treatment before a practice and everything. So we just appreciate you coming on the show. And one quick thing, Hey, Kurt, I want you to do something special. Talking this can't be good. Let him stab you with his left hand and yeah, get around that. Let him you Hey Nate. Nate was
showing me some kind of move the other day. Yeah, and he slapped me so hard, almost tell out of the chair like Rick Flair, And I was like, oh, I had to go back and watch the broadcast, like I'm like, man, he really hit it good. So how do you need to get he just playing? Yeah, we appreciate you coming on the show man. We'll go try to get you on during the season a little bit
when we get back to the Star. So go go get treatment, and uh, we'll see you on the see you on the plane, I guess Friday, and uh, we're gonna take a quick break. And do we have another special guest coming up? We do have another guest coming all right, we'll let you get so y'all kicking me off? Says something I'm getting kicked off? Yeah, but who is the guest I got? Who is the guest we got? Oh, we've got Don merediths son Michael because he's working on
the party. Ain't baby, the party is not old cool. Be right back. We the entertainment loving people to man the best unlimited wireless plan ever from ATNT. What else do you want? UM got scattering reports on all the guys, Projections on who's gonna make the fifty three man roster, great story on Jalen Smith, who's actually gonna play this Saturday.
Everybody's pretty excited about that pick one up training camp here at Frisco next week. So yeah, UM wanted to go old school here. For those of you who do not know, Don Meredith was the original All America Cowboys quarterback long before, Tony Romo, Dak Prescott, Troy Aikman, Roger Stauback, Don Dandy, Don Meredith, and we are fortunate today we have Michael Meredith here. Yes, so and son, welcome to the show. Thank you very much. Don is excuse me,
Michael is working on a documentary about his father. And there are some wonderful stories out there that we all know already about Don and some of his uh wild escapades. But apparently you've got a whole stash more anyone right off the top of the head you'd like to share with us, Well, I know, I'll tell you training Camp for him. He actually always wanted us to do a
movie based in Training Camp a Thousand Oaks. I was obviously back in the day, and he wrote a screenplay and worked with a guy named Jason Miller who did Championship Season. Want to Pulitzer Prize for that play in that movie, And one day maybe I'll look into that. But there was there were some amazing stories just within the Thousand Oaks world. And you know, curfew wasn't always curfew. And to give you one story, I'll tell you there.
You know, there's a long, storied history of Landry and my dad having different kind of outlooks on life and sport and sometimes drastically different, sometimes drastically and you know they I love both of them. But the story that Kim comes to mind was there was one practice and Landry kind of come down hard in the guys and he was, you know, we went and buckled down, We're
gonna get disciplined. Curfew's curfew all this. The next day, in the middle of practice, I don't know the make of the car, but it was convertible, had the Texas horns on it, music blaring, pulls onto the field, drives right down the middle of practice and it's it's Willie Nelson behind the wheel. And everyone stops, obviously, and Landry knows exactly who's behind it, but my dad plays innocent
and Willie just drives straight asked and keeps on going. Really, they started practice up again, and I'm really looking for that footage if I find that. That was the smoke bowling out of the car, right, yeah, yeah, the manifold was loose, But I just want to see the looks on the faces of you know, the players and my dad Landry. That would be awesome. So how how was it growing up as as you know, Don Merrit's son, were you around football all the time? Where you you know,
were you kind of away from it? Walk us through how that was to grow up around. I was, well, I'm coming up on the Big five. Oh. I was one hundred days old when the ice ball was played. Fiftieth anniversary of the ice Ball, and in a way the first winning team because sixty seven was January first, was the end of their first season. That was a winning season with the Packers, and then the last day
of the year the same um. And I was too young to remember all that obviously, So I kind of grew up into booth money football with Howard and Frank and my dad, and that's what I remember more. And this has been a journey of discovery for me, learning a lot that I didn't know because it wasn't talked about a lot in my house growing up. It was more just Monday Night was such a big deal and it was coming on the scene, and that was what people asked about and what I remember. So you see
the football, I wonder bad, you know. For Troy Hickman, there's a whole generation that sees him as a broadcaster, you know, those of us old folks know what a great player he was. I think it was a lot that same way with with Don where he was the Monday night football guy. He wasn't the quarterback of America's team. You know, he wouldn't the Cowboys guy. So I wondered if growing up you didn't see a lot of that
football stuff then it was all the TV. Yeah, I mean I did not even know until I started this project actually that my dad was the first Dallas Cowboy. But you know that that to me just seems phenomenal when you think of where the team is and how far it's gone, and it's the most valuable franchise and all that just little trivial thing to very significant things helping the city overcome the JFK years and moving from
that dark chapter into the home of America's team. And you know, they didn't they didn't go the distance with Super Bowl, but they definitely paved the way and did a lot for the city and gave a lot, left a lot on the field. And I'm incredibly proud of my dad and that team and bringing them all together maybe one last harah, you know, big reunion. Yeah. Well, before we get into that he was one of the tough when I've heard from talking to older players, he
was one of the toughest guys I ever played. I see those old pictures, always got the old one bar face mask and he played with broken noses, this and that. I mean, from what I understand, they didn't come much tough, tougher than him. Yeah. That I've talked to coach earlier today and that was one of the first things he said, is you know, one of the toughest guys I've ever heard of. And even the old footage, you see, it was late hits were kind of a thing of part
of the game. There was no protective quarterback then. Yeah, but you know Dad could just get off the ground sometimes with injuries that I know I couldn't. Yeah, longs punctured with ribs and still playing and doing good. Um, definitely tough. I think all the players were. The team started off with their piece together. You know, they missed the first draft and they had they had an expansion draft, so they they they went through some some brutal times
and walked out the other side. And my hats off to him. So that's kind of what the film's about. I'm really excited to be working on How did this project come about? Was as it been a long time in the making, as it just you woke up in the middle of the night and was like, Hey, I'm gonna do a documentary, or how did that? How did that creative process work? It's it. Yeah. There's a couple
of different moments that I think I look back on. One, I was working on a I'm a narrative film director and I usually work with actor and I was in embedded with the troops in Afghanistan doing research and writing a script. And we were up in the Hindu Kush mountains, way off the grid, talking to the village elders, and I'm I'm being protected by some guys Tenth Mountain Division,
amazing soldiers. I look over in this little hut and this kid's kind of leaning out and looking at me and ducking back, and I take my camera and I get a shot of him. I look at it and he's wearing a Dallas Cowboys jacket. Everyone else is in traditional garb and they're sold They asked if we were Russians.
They didn't even know who was, you know, And I just thought, wow, that to start with an idea in Dallas and go global like that In years later, I just thought, this is the trickle down the residents, you know, the Doppler effect of it all was just I had to look into it. So that was that began a journey to Actually I started on the ice bowl I knew the fiftieth annivers who was coming up, and then the players led me to a bigger story and the
ice bowls an important chapter of that. Yeah. Um, but so yeah, I started sixty seven and now it's six basically the span of my dad and Don Perkins's career. They came together and left together. You sound like you, lily, you lead a very boring life. Yeah, yeah, we did get shot at Is it different for you working on a state, working on a story that's so personal, that's so close to what you're doing, is it is it
harder or is it? I use your four phone, It's it's hard to know what is um meaningful and important to me? Like I'm touched by some things, I'm more proud than others. But the part that's been easier than expected is just the support and almost the will of people in North Texas that have just some the initial announcements of talking about We've done fifteen interviews so far. We're just kind of getting things under way. Um emails and calls and just a overwhelming sense of support makes
it easier. So I feel like I'm almost just facilitating something that wants to happen on its own. Right. What's one really neat thing that you learned about your dad that you had no idea through this, through this process, well that you can tell publicly. Yeah, yeah, neat. Let me think of that one. One thing he always told me. A significant moment for him was the first commercial time out, and that was since fifty years ago. They didn't have
it down. They just say it was a fixed time five minutes into the third I don't know what it was, but it interrupted a really good momentum shift and it was third and short. I don't know. They called the time out and all the guys I've heard this from a bunch of his teammates were standing around. They had
no idea what to do. Usually go to the sidelines cut, but they just said stand there and wait, and he he thought it was a kind of a pivotal moment in the sport where they were waiting for commercial from Tied or whatever it was, and he wasn't really happy about it, so and he kind of suspected that maybe tex Stramas mothers were involved, and you know, he was
a creative guy. So not long after, they were playing the Saint Louis and a really beautiful woman started walking down the steps with her popcorn rubbers she had, and my dad looked up and noticed her, and then the players looked up and noticed her, and pretty soon the whole Cotton Bowl is watching this guy walk down and the camera's turn and she owns the moment like she
sees everyone. That she does is kind of you know, sexy walked down there front fifty yard line seat, sits down, but the game clock's running out before she gets to her seat, so my dad's looking at it, looking at her, calls a time out to allow her to get to her seat. And that and that was I think. And I never knew that story from him, but I think it's if you're gonna stop the game for Ted, and I understand the big picture, it's a business, but you
can stop the game for a beautiful girl. At the same time heard that story, I didn't know all the details. I didn't realize was a commercial thing. Here's the beauty punch line. Her name was Bubbles Cash, and tex Shram, from what I've heard, was inspired by her and her power over the audience, and that was one of the things that kind of kind of led to the Dallas couch earlier. Wow, great Bubbles Cash. Look at Bubbles Cash. Sometimes she was one of the premiere of show girls
in town back in the sixties or whatever. I've never heard that story, dude. We have a picture of that. Yeah, we have a picture of her walking down down the stairway and everybody's turned. It's just like, well, I gotta tell you, I need to see that she's She's alive and well from what I hear somewhere in the Austin area, and if anyone has a connection to her, I would love to talk to her and just I'd love to around her. I've always wanted to do a story on
that moment because I've heard that too. That that was kind of put the seat in tex Shram's brain to to bring about the Dallas come with wo and if text could flip it back on my he that was that was you know, Texts, It was a genius in a lot of ways, so he so my dad might have been trying to get get one on him, but it was there's that social element as part of the film, and there was a real shift in women's admiration in civil rights and the players and the cowboys, and a
lot of stuff was trail plays in the decade of the sixties that I think was overshadowed by JFK, which was a huge part of it. But there was some really fascinating things going on in Dallas. Was an interesting place and it was boomtown. Yeah. So and your dad really took a beating from not just on the field but in the media and from fans because they were
next year's champions. I mean, for as much criticism as Romo has had to go through in his career and that sort of stuff, Meredith really took unwarranted criticism for what he did. And then once he retired, I think people regretted they wanted him back. Yeah, when they're when they're a Monday night game where they he was in the booth and they were chanting his name to Yeah. My cousin Joe Aredith was at um one of the last games where they were chanting not happy stuff, you know,
it's it's usually my dad's fault. And then his first game back, I believe Monday Football in seventy one or maybe seventy back in the Cotton Bowl and they were getting pummeled and they started we want Meredith, we want Mereth. And it was within a few years and I think he said that there's there's no way you're getting me back down there. I don't know if you could have made it back down. Yeah, but well you've got you get there's a couple events coming up that you're getting
some of these old timers together. I think you said there's gonna be one game in October, is at right, Yeah, you become an alumni reunion type thing. Yep. So it's it's penciled in for October first Rams game, and so far, every single player I've talked to is and it's more just love of team and love of my dad, and they're that old camaraderie is still there, which is impressive too, because free agency was you know, the teams stayed tighter,
and the families and the wives and all that. Um. It sounds like there may be a fifteen twenty guys that are going to come in do an on field ceremony, honoring moment, and then some type of reunion a dinner m um, and then this home movie campaign that we're doing to gather any kind of footage that's related to the Cowboys or Dallas culture in the sixties. Um, first from the players and then from the from Cowboy Nation. We'll do a little screening and uh, and I think
it would be cool. I don't think they've been together for a long time and there's probably not gonna be a seventy fifth anniversary, you know, yea, So it feels good to be a part of that too. And next week they're unveiling at the Star, uh, the Ring of Honor kind of walk of fame out there, and you're gonna be involved in that, aren't aren't you as well?
I am? Yeah, M the Cowboy Organization Charlotte Jones asking me to represent my dad, um, and I'm not exactly sure if it's a plaque or or a statue statues that will be an unveiling and all the ring on guys are coming in there. Yeah, that's gonna be a need to need deal. I'm not sure what day that is next week, but um, it sounds like it's gonna be pretty cool with a lot of those greats on hand. You need to work on getting us some tickets to that screening. Do you know a guy that can work
on that. I can bribe the right people. Yeah, I can work on that, some fellas. All right, Hey, I just want to share my favorite Meritis story that I've heard, ever heard. And I probably don't have the details right, but you so you fill them in for him. But from what I understand, there was a plane ride back
to Dallas. Horrible weather. They're just getting bounced around, and then these days the planes were not near as safe as they were and people guys are grown men or panicked and screaming and yelling, and there's Dandy don Mere just the back with a drink in hand. He's like, been a good one, boys, I've heard that, heard that
from pretty much everybody on board. Yeah, he just said it's been a good name it And I don't know if you was faking or not, but even to be able to fake when your plane's going down and not spill your drink, you know that that takes some special character. So I think his thing oftentimes was to his ABC's
always be cool. Like if the team was down and everyone was panicking, he would come in and do something like that that would sing a song or you know, just lighten the huddle up and the guys would kind of relax and get back into their groove and back into that zone. So that was a real, real gift he had that I admire and I'm proud of. But he may he may just been trying to get everybody to calm down. Stay where where will this? Uh this,
I guess it's a documentary. Yeah, where will this be available? And when will it be available? How we watch it? So we're we we have a website first, cowboys dot com that's the name of the documentary, And the rest of this year we will be finishing up interviews. Um, like I mentioned, we did fifteen already and we're gathering more, and then we'll be asking for all this home movie
footage and sort of crowdsourcing the archival. So this city will hopefully help make this film and guide me a little bit as a director with what they've seen or what their grandparents shot on old super eight cameras and all that stuff. So the goal is to finish it up this year release it at some point next year, and the dream is to have on the heels of the documentary a scripted television show. And that's mainly because there's so much amazing just information coming in as stories,
and the drama just gets more. The plot thickens every time I talk to someone. There's too much to put in a two hour doc. Yeah, so there might be next year a Madden Men meets Friday Night Lights set in Dallas in the sixties and kind of the s seen through the eyes of the team. And so hopefully, hopefully next year will be some some good mode mojo for all of that sounds like a really cool project.
You know, it's a lot of people watch, you know, the show Ballers that's out on HBO, and you know, some of my friends are like, man, that shows so ridiculous, like there, you know, that's not real life, And I'm like, no, you don't understand, Like the real life stories are more ridiculous than made up stories sometimes. So I can only imagine back when you know that there wasn't social media and people weren't worried as much about you know, their
image and getting caught doing something. I can only imagine back in the day, the kind of stuff that went on that you know, unless you were there to document it, you know in your memory, you know, And I'm sure you've uncovered a lot of that stuff through this process. And it's just like, really that there's no way that that's true, you know, like the Willie thing, like that's like, that's not real life. How does that happen? So yeah, and every time I talk to someone, it's a new story.
I think the guys are getting a little bit older and maybe they don't care as much about, you know, being close to the vest and then they're just telling you so that that's just are you Are you allowed to tell the Howard Coastell story? Rob was telling me earlier. Rob and Tom over there they're gonna get get in trouble that one might get me. I want to hear this. So, Kurt, how did you too link up? How did how did you? Guys? Me? Well, I know the guys helping out the PR side of
this project, Tom Fire and Rob Hickley. I've known them. I used to work with them long ago, and so they're involved with this kind of on the publicity side, and they're out here at camp today. I don't know if you're here tomorrow or not. But today kind of shooting some stuff and getting some beef rolling and kind of putting the word out and so yeah, it's been great. I'm glad we got to meet. And like I said earlier today, you know we what are we gonna do?
You photo of bubbles? Cash, We might be able to help you out with that bubbles. Please give me a call. I want to after that, after this, I want to photo of bubbles. You do? Yeah, let's take one last break and we'll come back and uh, I don't know what we'll go. You know what, let's play a game when we come back. Kurt, you're gonna do that? All right?

I think we get back into Dallas about four o'clock and then the team goes straight to the omni out at the Star to spend the night, and then the game is at six o'clock on Saturday. Get to see a little preseason football. It will be fun, and then we'll be back on the air. I believe Monday. The time is going to
be to be determined. We're gonna try to have our show around open locker room when we get back, so we can continue to bring some players on throughout the week and have him on the show and hopefully keep that going throughout the season. Um, it's been a lot of fun out here this week. We should have the whole crew. We should Josh you be back? Is this bubbles cash? Oh wow, that's pretty awesome. We need to tweet that out, tweet that out from the show handle.
We'll tweet that out after after the show. So all you guys, thank you. Um, hey, kay, how are you anyway? Okay, let's play a little game. We got about ten minutes left, all right, and I thought it would be fun to play a little Let's play a little over under first. Okay, okay, this is regular season only. Do we need to keep track of this? We can? We can um regular season only,
no playoffs included. UM, let's start with dak Okay Dakota Rain Prescott four thousand yards passing this season over under last year he had three thousand and six one hundred and sixty seven. I'll take the under because I think the Cowboys relied too much on the running game and I think that hopefully they'll be playing with leads so that we weren't want to work the clock. So I
will say under, you're gonna go with the under. I'm gonna take the over because the uncertainty with with Ezekiel Elliott. I think they may get in some some more passing situations earlier in the in the season. And I think he's gonna have more weapons this year, and he's got a year under his belt where he's got some experience with these guys, and I think they're all kind of clicking on the same page, and you're thinking alike, So I'm gonna take the over on that. I could see
that though, that you hope that well. They've been saying out here that him and Dez have already found a pretty nice uh. Um communication and they're working even better together, so that that's encouraging. Yep um touchdown passing touchdowns. Last year he had twenty three, and I'm gonna set the over under at thirty thirty. Um. I will again take the under, but just barely under, like twenty eight, twenty
nine something like that. Okay, but I think again, the ground game is gonna gonna kind of cut into his stats a little bit. I'm gonna go I'll take the over on this one as well, just because of what I just said. I think he's he's gonna be more comfortable in the red zone. If he could get any more comfortable in the games. Amazing last year and uh,
super budding superstar Rico gathers. I'm gonna make a bold prediction and say he's gonna become one of his Uh not only is he gonna make the team, he's gonna become one of his favorite red zone Really you think so? No, But I'm just throwing that out there because I know the fans. The fans are really high on Ricos. So who is it a gavitt Escobar we kept here for the last two or three years. Oh, he's such a
red zone thread. He's got such great hands, he's gonna score touchdown and what he scored two his whole career or something like that. Okay, and the last one for for Dak interceptions he threw four last year. I'm gonna set the over under at eight just because I don't think there's any way that he can throw as few interceptions as he did last year. There were a couple that he should have thrown that were dropped. UM, So I'm gonna set that at eight. I will probably take
the over on that. You are a dacater I loved not go throw for touchdowns and he's gonna throw. That doesn't mean he's gonna have a bad fifty interceptions, that doesn't mean he's gonna have a bad season. I think he's gonna have a great season, but he's he's not gonna have to carry the load. He's got other guys there that can help um the running game off its line making space. But conversely, I think his second year
he's more comfortable. They're gonna take more chances too, So I think those downfield throws are in doing that it's gonna possibly lead to more picks. Now I'm not saying he's gonna throw twenty and be horrible. But I just four last year was ridiculous for anybody, much less a rookie, and so I just think he can't help but go up. H Yep, that's I'm gonna take the over on that one too. She'd call me ye sure him. All right, Let's move on to Desmond demand Bryant, Yes, sir, all right.
He missed three games last year. Yeah, Um, receiving yards last year he had seven hundred ninety six. I'm gonna set the over at eleven hundred receiving yards. I'll take you over. I think, uh Um, if he's healthy, he'll get there. Okay, that's the I think that's the question. Margats. If he right, he's if he's out, But as long as he's in the game, I think I think a thousand and eleven hundreds doable for sure. I do too.
I'm gonna take the over just because Um, like we touched on earlier, and he's got a year under his belt with dak Um. He looks great out here. You know, if he can stay healthy, I think he I think he I think he could have a fourteen hundred yard season if he's on the field for every game, so um receptions last year he had fifty. I'm gonna set the we're under at seventy five. Yeah, I guess we're gonna. We're saying he's gonna have a eleven hundred yards. He
better have a bunch of catches. So I guess I'll take the over to to stay in line there. Same, I will take the same. And passing attempts for Dez Bryant. He had one last year. I'm gonna set the over under at one. Do you think they will try to let him air the ball out again this year? He threw one pass for a touchdown to Jason Witton last year. Yeah, that was an awesome play because I know he's he's been wanting to throw the ball in the game. I think ever since he got here. He can actually throw
the ball about seventy five yards in the air. If you've ever seen him, he has the best arm of the team. Oh, no doubt like effortlessly too. It just lets it sail. I'm gonna I'm gonna say, oh man, that's a tough one. Pass attempts or completions or what are you saying here? Pass attempts attempts. Yeah, man, yeah, can you push No? Nope. Um, I'll go under because and I'll blame that on Garrett because he's still conservative. I'm gonna go over just because it's fun. I agree,
it is fun. I hope he does go over. All right, let's move on to let's get into let's get into some rookie talk. All right, Ryan Switzer. Which this is assuming he makes the team, which, yeah, he'll make. I think he'll make the team if for nothing else, just for special teams. Yeah, und picks make the team. Yeah, Um, forty yards or more, either kick returns or pump returns. I'm gonna set the over under it two oh over. I think you'd be over. I think you'll have more
than two returns. Yeah, I'll give him no over. Okay, let's hope his hamstring is good, but okay, I'll take the over on that one too. Um. Let's move on to Jaylen Smith. How many games will he start? I'm gonna set the over under at six start. Wow. Um, I'll take the under. I don't think he'll start that many. I think he'll playing a bunch and I don't think he's gonna start that many. I agree, I agree. I think he needs I think he's gonna be a little
bit more experienced to hope that wrong job. Yeah, it'd be awesome if Um who will have more touchdowns? Bryce Butler or Terrence Williams. Bryce had three last year. I think he had a couple that he dropped that he should have had, and Terrence had four last year. Bryce or Terrence. Um, you know, I'm gonna go Terrence. I think, uh, I don't even know. Bryce is intriguing. He's got such speed and you keep kind of thinking he's gonna have this breakout year, right, you know, and you we're still
sort of waiting for it to happen. And I guess until he proves it, I'm gonna go with with Terrence. I'm gonna take Bryce because he's been on the show and he's a friend of the show, and he's taking over our Instagram and he's taking over our Instagram story on Friday. Yes, oh yeah, yeah, I'm definitely kissing straight up to him on the ride home or something. He's
gonna yeah, We're gonna let him. Uh. Um. Doctor Pepper is gonna sponsor it, and uh gonna give you a behind the scenes look at what his day is on our travel day Friday, which will be pretty cool because we're just gonna hand him a phone and just kind
of let him document the whole trip home. And then you know, they'll go straight to the hotel, so maybe we'll get some of that footage as well, maybe uh have him walking into meetings or something, and then you know kind of what their nights like before the game and and it should be pretty cool. So it's gonna be dead. I'm gonna take I'm gonna take Bryce just for that simple um. Let's see defensive interceptions last year the team had nine. I'm gonna set the over under
at twelve. God, you wish man. I did good setting these times you did? You did real good defensive interest options? Can anybody on the defense? Anybody on the defense? Yeah, wow, I'm gonna I'm gonna go over, are you? Just because of the way they've been flying around the ball out here, and you know, I think some of these young guys I think are gonna step up and I'm gonna take the under. Just Hater, I know Hater gets one of
those things again. Just haven't showed it. You know who on that who back there has had any kind of interceptions. You know, I think the leading uh interception guys Jeff he yeah, you know, I mean that him. Great for him, but you know he'd like to see a little more out of now. Guy. You know, Anthony Brown is in his second year. You can expect more from him, and Sean Lee. He usually picks up one or two. So I don't know. Nine, it's a tough number to over
under twelve. I guess you said that we're under Okay, last little bit of game here. Who makes the team. But between these three guys James Hannah, Jeff Swaim, Rico Gathers, not the practice squad actual fifty three, Well, I would think all three. You're keeping all three up? Yeah, yeah, rolling with four tight ends this year. We've done that in the past. I think, yeah, But then do you do you carry a fullback? If you do that, Keith, does that mean bad? And they like Keith Smith? I
mean that's tough. I guess, I mean they can't. I don't think they get Gathers back on the practice squad. He showed too much potential, So they're done there. Cats
out of the bag, yeah and Swam. I guess if you had to pick of those three, it would be Hannah just because he's the oldest and has battled some injuries, and I think they're happy with You saw last year with Swam he does a little bit in the passing game and he actually they had a drop off, They had a little bit of a struggle in the running game with him when he went out of the lineup. So, um, so you're saying all three, Well, it would be my
first choice, all three. My second choice would probably be Hanna. Wouldn't be the auto man out. Oh so you're keeping Swain. That's a good that's a good call because his parents watched the show and they stopped by the set every day when they walk out of practice. So I don't have to rat you out. Who makes the team with two? Who do you think? Would you? I would roll with four? Yeah? Yeah, yeah,
I mean, I'm I'm with you. I think uh, I think Swain is really underrated when it comes to the to his blocking ability, you know, and and he's actually, you know, he has a few drops here and there in practice and in preseason, but on game day he shows up. You know, he's he's got pretty good hands for a big guy and a guy that's you know, especially he's a blocker. Um. And then Hannah, I don't you know they've kept him around. You know, he's a good guy. He's a good guy, and you know he's
he's got some speed on him. And you know Witting. I don't know how much Witton's got left in the tank. And you know how often they're gonna sub in. If it's up to him, he wouldn't come out any place, you know. But Um, I think I'm with you. I think you roll with with all those guys. A couple more here real quick before we get out of here. Who do you keep Hillman or Rod Smith? Makes that team? Smith? For sure, he's younger and he's showing something's the upside. Yeah,
he looked really good. Good, he's looked really good. I like him. Um. And then who you keeping Andy Jones or Noah Brown or doing the one of them make the team? Wow? Oh that's a tough one. Um. You know Andy Andy Jones, you know, looks like his his arrows definitely pointing up. Um. You know Nate's brought it up. He last year the lights got a little too bright for him on game day. Um, he seems to be doing a better job this year. And but Noel brown Man, he's a big body and he can go get the ball.
So so you know, you know there's Beasley, Butler, Williams Bryant. So you're only probably looking at one more guy and that well Switzer, and it might be tough for you to one. Um maybe both practice squad squad. I would guess probably depends the two on how much they contribute on special teams. Yeah, yeah, that's for sure. They're gonna no matter what, they're gonna have to do something on that in that regard, and I don't know how they how they'll do going that s all right, Well that
is it for us. Yeah, you made it. We made it through. I stuck this whole show out, Kurt. It's been a pleasure. Glad you came out. We're gonna go out and party like it's nineteen ninety nine and Oxnard, California tonight. Thank all of you that have tuned in throughout training camp, training camps.
