Before listening, ask good doctor, if your heart is healthy enough for Dallas Cowboys football. He's hanging with the Boys, broadcasting live from Dallas Cowboys World headquarters at the Star in Frisco. Now your host, Nate Newton, Kurt Daniels, and Shannon Gross. Whoa man, it has been a long time, so long that I forgot that we moved to Mondays and that we're at eleven o'clock. I thought we were still in the afternoon. Kurt heading on Mexican time. Kurt
head to text me and say, are you coming? And then I got here and we lost Douglas still in Mexico, Still in Mexico. How you boys been good? Great? Man, we've been been great. You look good? Yeah? You all good? Yeah, you look good. Nate, Yeah, man, we've just been We've just been, you know, moving along. And he took a vote while he was going. I don't love his good news bad news. Uh. I'm surprised Kurt didn't do what we talked about. Uh, you'll seat right there. That's what
Kurt supposed to be. I heard, so I heard. I'm just saying we took a vote between the three three guys that were left here. For a whole week. I hear that I missed one show and Kurt actually did something and got the big man. Actually, I actually did something, Hey, National Headlines while I went out and got mister Jones, Stephen Jones, and h and we asked them some pretty good questions. I heard, I heard Nate came out hot. Well, I aren't y'all guys me as much as I'm I'm
a big Cowboy fan. It may not be the first question, but it's always a sudden question. Hey man, what we're gonna do with dad? And I'm saying okay, And when he Kurt hit me with like, mister Jones gonna be on, I'm like, I gotta asks normal. I stayed away from the hard question, but I want to be able to give our fans are on his answer, you know, instead of saying, well I don't know what I well, this is what the man said, you know, so uh man, it was nice he went and got it, man, And
but you know what he took off. He wanted to He wanted to get this started. You could tell how mister Jones answered the question. He wanted to get it started because I think that they're gonna have conversations with Dad's to fill him out and vice versa, and whatever comes, whether it's a reduction and pay page stay the same or whatever. I think they He wanted that to be on Dad's in his people's mind as well as his own,
him and his father and coach his mind. Uh. Yeah, I didn't know how big it was thanks to Kurt. And I don't keep saying that thanks to Kurt, because yeah, I ain't know how big it would be. And so I walked and to do some other shows and everybody like, man, that was a great podcast. What are you saying? I mean, what podcast? Yeah? And so it was nice, man. So that was a great It was a great deal. It was a great gift for what Kurt did because you know,
you asked the questions and that was what important. So yeah, I'm on an airplane coming back from Mexico on the runway, waiting to take off, and I get a text it says, you know, being in skin or talking about your podcast on their show, and I'm like, oh, what we do wrong? What we do? Oh? Man? Then we were Yeah, guys were everywhere, Kurt, do more? Do that more? Often? Speaking of you lined up another guest today, right, Yeah, I think hopefully here in a little bit, we're gonna have
Michael Down's call in. I'm gonna talk a little bit. He was a part of Thurman Steves your team and at Everson Walls. With Everson Walls being up for the Hall of Fame here on Saturday, we're gonna talk to him a little bit about that and he actually, let's go, Curt, let's go. I'm looking forward to getting his thoughts too. He was he was a stud state safety as well, so I'd like to hear what he kind of thinks about the current secondary as well. Let's go. But wow,
it's just been help you enjoyed yourself? Man, Not for real because because you're gone. No, no, no no, because uh we we we've we haven't heard from the fans. One thing we haven't heard from the fans left, should we should we hear from them? Yeah, from the fans. I'm for real because we we we we planned even last week, but then when missus Jones took off with it,
it takes precedent. Yeah, so we we was like, wow, you know so eight eight eight eight five five two two nine seven, I don't even have anything to write with I'm about the bar this eight eight eight, eight five five two two nine seven. Yeah. So we went to the Senior Bowl, and you know, I was, how was that? Man? It's always nice And this is the first time that I did not have a position, I
mean a true position. Like one year was looking at offensive linement, look at you know, one next year to look at look at the quarterbacks, or look at this position where you just locked in, you know, uh, looking at a certain position. Whereas this year here, you know, I'm maintaining that we needed, we need every position whatever. Yeah, we needed, we needed all we need. We need playmakers,
We need guys that can make a difference. We need guys that if something happened to one eyes frontline guys that they can least fill the role for a game or two and will not have a major disaster. You know, who are some of the guys that that people were some of the buzz buzz name but you know, the the Josh Allens and the Baker Mayfields that that that was, you know, and I didn't even realize that Josh Allen was kind of there at first. You know, he threw
reil the first day. Second day was Baker Mayfield kind of did it. Baker Mayfield got some pop to him, He got some some swag to him, or some bizzares, whatever words you want to call it. You know, he he got a little bit of that about him. But uh, I'm gonna tell you his his little partner or the running back. I can't, I can't think of his name. Let me find him. It's a little running back, bron for real, for real. I think his name is Flowers,
the running back, fullback, tight end? Didn't brother, Oh was that the big guy the tight end? Yeah, if you want to Demetrius Flowers, Oklahoma, and uh, it's a guy. I'm gonna let you pronounced this name. Look at number thirty one, Timmy, Timmy, his name Flowers. Tell me number thirty one's name ogobania acaranquo sounds good. I want you to ask broadest about him. I want you to ask that young man that sits over opposite broughdest This was the naturally meanest guy out there. He's he's a devis
event for Oklahoma, but he's an outside linebacker. He's a Sam linebacker. And he when he did the run defense one on one, gets offen his lineman. He was the meanest when he did pass rush. He was the meanest when they did a team He was just mean. He was just irritated about everything, about everything. How long has it been since his team's had just a nasty guy, just a mean nasty that can play. Yeah, probably rat Yeah, probably rat lift. You know, for me, it was for me,
it was James Washington. For me when I played, you know, we called him drive by because any given moment, Bro, you can spray the field were either verbally or physically. I'm telling you, and and uh and this is the main thing about James Washington. Graduated from Youth SLA with honors. Works for you, sela just the smartest, one of intelligent guy. Yeah, one of intelligent guys in the world. Get on the football field. You're like, this dude ain't never the thug. Yeah,
serious man, And that's what we need, you know. And you got to have that guy, you you got to have that guy that plays within the rules of the game. But you know, he's always gonna be on the edge. You know, he's always gonna be on the edge. Woods be that guy. He could be, Well, we'll see, we'll see, because he's still in the learning stages because you know he wind up as our slot guy. And that ain't no joke. That takes. That takes some time to h
get used to. And so we'll see. But I'm telling you, uh, that guy can't pronounce his name. And I'm not gonna even try to mess up this kid. He's out. He's a defensive end six one two four the from Oklahoma. He I'm serious. Now, he got something in him. He got something in him now. Whether he can play or not on this level, I know he can. He may not be a great rush defensive end, but I know one thing he can run. He got some attitude and you can play him at sam linebacker probably and then
still let him get in on some pass rush. You know, he's nice man, He nice? I mean, And uh, you brought up running back while ago. Would you guys be mad if they took a running back in the first round? Yes? Whoa first round? No? No? No, no, no, third round? Be more more like it. Now, I'm gonna tell you another guy that uh, And I'm just giving you guys that just jumped at me. Her Will Hernandez sixty three UTAP guy offensive guard sixty three, three thirty has some
decent feet, has some nice feet. And see, I don't I don't have rounds. I don't know rounds like you know said he's dish round. So we'll bring him on, you know, let him tell you what projected rounds. These guys go at. But when he put his hands on it, he was a spark plug, a little spark flug with his arms, probably along with his table. And uh, he's got a kind of a mean streak too. What's more important for you for a guy coming out of college
to have good feet? As offensive line? When I look at officers line from from the from the kicker to the Loyd's offensive lineman, feet is the key because all of this each other's feet. Yeah, feet is the key to all of this. Oh Douglas, I heard you, you know so uh yeah, and even Rex when it's fetish feet, yeah, he right, feet is the key to all of it. And uh when I when I look at guys, you know, uh the flowers, Uh it's Kyle Bellinger, Arizona State. He is a guy I talked to. I talked to Mike,
the guy that does the TV. Mike Marshall compiled a great list I had to go through. I talked to him. They didn't use this guy running back number twenty eight. Make sure I'm right. I don't want to be wrong. Make sure I'm right. Make sure I'm right. Yeah, Arizona State number twenty seven. They did not use him a lot his senior year at Arizona State. But in the combine,
every other ball was going in for the North. Every other ball in practice was going to him, whether it was running out of the backfield or catching the ball out of the backfield. Like I said, I don't I don't have no where they should be drafted that. I'm just saying guys that jumped out to me, or guys that they brought the attention to me through somebody else, and I look at them and then and then and they stayed on my mind, you know so, Uh, I
think it was disadvantage. Just the first time I can remember since I've been here that none of the coaches went that I know of. Well, put us at a disadvantage of all. No, No, because a lot of teams, the Ravens are known for this. Uh, the Bengals are known for this. And now the Bengals coaches have something to say. But normally your scouts set the board and if they have somebody that's super nice or super good, they would say, hey, coach, where you think about this guy?
They're coach watched the film, the coach doesn't that said, I have to be there. What we preach around here is our scouting combined. Our scouting department knows what our coaches want. So coaches need to get themselves together. We got four or five sixty new coaches. They need to be getting to know each other so when they get on the field they can translate this stuff to the players.
You know, you can't have new coaches and then twenty seven new guys and twenty and the whole and the guys that's veterans not knowing what each position coach like and don't like. So they needed to stay here and get some knowledge on what Jason Garrett and the two coordinators preferred. You know, how they're teaching what they want and what's their termin Knowledgiest, Kurt, you've been doing any research on the Senior Bowl? Now, I don't to be honest,
I don't worry about these guys too much. Chill their cowboys. Yeah, I have a hard enough time keeping up with this team, so I'm afraid I'm not gonna be a whole lot of Trey Matthews number twenty one for ARVN. I'm just saying this is what his number was. That you know, he stood out a little bit, you know at the Senior Bowl doing practice week. You know, just guys like that man and hand guy. You know Rodison talked about him number nine. He he couldn't be blocked. Really, he
couldn't be blocked. He couldn't be blocked. Bro not not like I said, I don't watch the game, because when when're talking about the Senior Ball, I didn't watch that game. I mean that that you know that game rally hurts a player, you know, even if you don't play well. There's so many factors go into getting into getting into a week three four deepens man versus a four three deepens avan, A one technique that's a that's a clogger
versus a one technique that's a mover. You know, a gap player versus a guy that's that two gaps that just stands the gay up and reads. It's just so many things that goes into this right here that you're asking these kids to learn to by time. Some of them gets to the game. Someone mind is blown. Are the work out its more important than the game itself? Well, what the workouts does is in some scouts that confirm
or not confirm what they're thinking about this kid. You know, for us sometimes with body where their bodies look where you think, okay, god, they've been on film. These guys six three looks good and then you get there and find out he's six one. You know, you know, you know, you say, this guy look thick on film. You know, get there and I mean thirty pounds light than I thought. Was this because you got in better shape or this
because this besides you've been having all these pads. You know, you just get a you know now, like I was telling Douglas that some of this stuff. You know, the game can help you, but the game rally just hurts you. You know. You go down there early and just watch the work went out on Tuesday. It was a Tuesday and Wednesday and I came on back because I mean Thursday, you know, I kind of you kind of see what you like and who jump out at you? You know, that was a weather down at Mobile. It was nice
for a change. Wasn't really sixty five I mean sixty one fifty nine. Nice. Yeah, he gets some good old salt and cooking. Uh. Yeah, I went to one of the places. I don't think i'd be going back to marked that. We have a story. Yeah, so I'm gonna tell you. And it's another kid, uh from North Carolina, Ant number seventy two, Brandon Parker, offensive tackle. He played both sides, really he played, you know they had him at both He's sixty seven. I mean he like he
had some nice feet. Now, all of these guards and tackles for the average, on the average from the north and south, they wasn't as big in this bulky and as I thought the guys were last year, and they weren't a stiff. Now, I don't know how these guys are gonna be rated. You know, brought us and others tell us how these guys are rated. But they they were.
They were lean guys. You know, guys that seem like they can grow up in the year or two, you know physically, you know, last year, like them googles could one much growing to be left. You know, it was already there, you know for us, mean, it's just fatties, you know what I'm saying. Fatties. Yeah, we gotta get we gotta get brought us on soon to talk a little draft. Speaking of y'all doing the draft issue again
this year, we are, Yeah, we gotta get rolling on that. Well, it's gonna be bigger this year because his draft is being is here. Yeah, yes, so it's gonna be bigger. Yeah, for you guys all that brought us loves that go from what three hundred to five hundred. Well, it's kind of up to him how much he's he can how much worse out? Yeah, y'all started on it yet, not well he has, He's started on some of his stuff. But yeah, we we haven't got into the a bit
it too much yet. I'm gonna tell you a kid, Braxton Barrels, wide receiver, a five, nine eighty six from Miami. You're talking about the guy that was trying to make an impression but the quarterbacks wasn't sharp with their passes. This this is number eight. I would really like to know where he would go because he's not a big guy. But uh, this guy, man, he was trying not to drop nothing. He don't care if he had to dive over eight folks up uperneath the artificial turf. He didn't care.
He was trying to care. I'm like, why, I want to see what this kid watched up there. We gotta go to a quick break, but I want to ask y'all a question before we go, because we've talked about on this show. With your first pick, you take the best player available on the board. And I just said, would you be mad if they took a running back? And you laughed at me, Kurt, But I did not laugh. You kind of laughed, he scoffed. What position would you not be cool with them taking in the first round
this year? Quarterback? You'd be okay with um. You gotta move up. It ain't nothing out there. You gotta up and pray to pray, pray to God. Is somebody that these guys are real? Yeah, you're not gonna do that, but just hypothetically, So no running back and no quarterback. Other than that, everything's on your board, So yeah, what
about you, Nate, Everything's on my board. Mike Marshall was saying safety, safety, because we got the new UH position coach, But I think that that's out of the question because he can come in and help fix what we got. I think first that's what you try for. Were y'all watching, We hadn't talked since since uh playoff weekend. Every time y'all saw buried church, were you just like yeah, Nah, I kind of get past that real quick because, uh, you either good enough of you not you to keep
this man or you don't like like hitches. You know, you either keep hitches or you don't or move on. Yeah, because you know what many people we can look back home. You see a lot us. It's super Bowl a lot All right, let's take a quick break. When we come back, we will probably hopefully have a special guest. but he didn't have time to answer us. Soon he get it together, Douglas, What do you guys? What do you guys think about the Super Bowl matchup? Here's a good question. Yes, Nate's probably not going to answer this. I'll ask you, Kurt na Naken answer if he wants Betty Will would you rather see Philly win their first Super Bowl or Tom Brady just win another one? I hope Philly loses for multiple reasons, but I think they will burn that city down. You know what, they might
burn it down, whether they win or lose. It'll be crazy up there. What do you what do you think hurt? Who you want to see whin? I'm I'm sick of the Patriots. I don't really have any So you're rooting for the Eagle. I'm not rooting for anybody. You want the Eagles to win, don't you don't want the Patriots to win? You know It's amazing how how we we we just a world of underdogs? Will a whirl of for the first one? Will a world of this that another, and we don't respect and winning and how hard it
is to accomplish that. We are witnessing something that will probably never happen. Wow, way to go, Kurt. Wait, God, I'm glad Jack Hurt taking phone call. Oh my god, you get the show. What I just called Michael Downs and I got his voicemail. I bet he was calling Kurt probably. So so what we have to do. What we have to do is it's three teams. I went with the Fighting Zimmerman's all. You know, I picked the Eagles to win out of the division because of Fletcher Cops.
But then Fighting Zimmerman's you know, I like coach zim So that's who I chose to get into the NFC Championship game. But I don't wave on Tom Brady when you when you you have to go take it from Tom. You have to go beat Tom. And so as much as I'm an NFC man in the NFC East, because I believe in your division, I believe that if your division strong, and if you can go through your division and win any ship, prepare you for the for the
super Bowl. So so here we are, you know, and let's see what's happening, man, I mean I will finish this discussion to do your thing, hurt. You want to do the honors? Sure, no doubt. Hey, don't let him get the big head. Now come on to welcome to us. Welcome right now is the great Michael Downs For those fans out there who need a refresher, he was with the team from what eighty one to eighty eight? Yes,
and a former teammate of Nick Nick Newton. For briefly, Michael, you're joined here by Nate Newton, who you know well, I assume, and Shannon Gross and our who's our? I'm just bombing this great. You're doing a great job. Welcome to the show, Michael. Thanks for taking some time with us. Thank you, it's my pleasure. I hadn't talked to lady of two years. And yeah, man, I'm glad to get to talk with you for a minute. What's up, Mike Man, because I'm shocked you didn't come there. We had this
past summer, was it? Dak had the bollet or the golf thing? And I saw walls and too tall and all of that out there. So where you being? Mike? You know, I must have not heard that one right, because I usually try to go to those events because that's the only time you know, we've we've seen people, yeah, get together. So I try to go as much as I can. But I think I just missed out on right. What was So? What what are you doing in life right now? Man? Before we start pepping you with other questions.
I'm working with real estate. I'm a real estate broker and I've been doing that for probably about eighteen nineteen years. But I'm I'm about to get out of it because it's just, uh, it's it's a tough business, right, Wow, eighteen nineteen years man, a graduate of Rice. I mean, so we use a business major. You was into heavy
real estate even in college. Now I am a business major, and you know, I've been trying to do it for a kid and so, you know, just like everybody else, I mean we we uh we all you know have to do something. I have to Football's right, That's what I've been doing. You're still in the DFW area. He's a high schoolers from South Oak Cliffs, all right. I was. I was born in Parkland Hospital, so I'm not going anywhere and uh, like Nate said, I went to high
school here. Uh been here. My whole life really uh went down the rice uh in Houston, Texas, uh for college, and I came right back to Dallas as soon as I could. I was. I was surprised. I mean, you were part of that rookie class with Everson Walls, right, so yeah, and everything gets all the glory, I guess you'd say, because he had eleven interceptions that year. But Michael that same season h Finnish seventh in the NFL
with seven interceptions. I think you were what second on the team and tackles and and you were an all rookie that year, right, yeah, I was. And uh, don't don't forget Dennis Thurman. Dennis had nine interceptions that year and had and as a team, I think we had thirty some interceptions. Wow, uh cowboys that had thirty interceptions
in the last ten years combined. Man. And I tell you, when when you told me that you wanted to talk about the secondary, I felt a little little shot because before I'm honest, Uh, I don't have nothing good to say about. Well, we're not gonna we we get around that hit. But when you when you look at this second, without being too critical, what does this secondary need to do to become better. Is that our front end need
to rush better to give them more opportunities? Are Is it some some little things that you see that they can improve on. Yeah, you did that. That's not the number one thing, is uh just getting more pressure on the quarterback? Uh? And but also you know the guys out there in the secondary, Uh, they just need to be more aggressive. And I don't know, you know, if they play zone or man and man or whatever, because
it's really kind of hard to tell from from tv. Uh, but I think they need to be more aggressive on their end and uh, you know, and that and that's kind of easy to sit up somebody you're saying being more aggressive, like, uh, one, don't one coverage, just get closer to the guy, press up on them a little bit. Uh,
Is that what you're saying there? Yeah, and you know it's not all about just interceptions, but you know you got knocked downs too, and so um, I just I just I just see, you know, watching the game from television, Like I said before, Uh, the guys, you know, the wide receivers touching passes and defensive black is not even close to him, you know, and men, even though it's
the same thing I tell people we don't have. We don't make the windows small enough for the court for the opposing quarterbacks, you know, because a lot of times you can scare a quarterback off just being in the right presentity, right presentity of whether player at in the angle, at the quarterback look at it, and that I'll make them go away. Sometimes that's what they do to day is a lot of times, you know. But I'm with you one hundred percent, man. So, but is it anything
positive that you do see? Do you like the young group of guys. Do you think in time they get aggressive? How would you look at that? You know? The only thing that I I song that I could appreciate was, you know, cornerbacks traditionally don't make tackles, and but uh, those guys, uh were cockling more than I've seen, you know, in a few years from Cowboy second day. So I do get them credit for that and just kind of hope that they can continue to make the tackles but
get close to those. Why I achieved was as well, right, our guys had to come in this year as rookies and kind of you know, sink or swim. What was that like for you and Everson that first year. I mean, did you ever feel in over your head or was it just getting go? You know? And I know Everson
will will back me up on this. Um. We came in under coaching Landry obviously, and that scheme was was very difficult to understand because we you know, we might line up in one way and by the time the ball snaw, you know, we gotta adjust and and do something else. And uh, I mean that was all the time, and and talking about the famous flex exactly. Yeah. And and the flex was you know good in this day. Uh,
but it was it was difficult. You know. There's a lot of guys that I saw when I were coming in that I thought good athletes, but they didn't make the team because um, you know, they didn't pick it up. Yeah, I couldn't pick it up. And and and coach Landry was a stickler about you know, like if you if you can't understand this, you can't play that bottom line. And so we are when we came in. Uh, you know, we just I can speak for myself that it was difficult,
but somehow I understood it. And uh and as a safety, you know, we were responsible for helping on the linebackers to make the adjustments, you know, to tell everybody they were changed, and we're going over there. We're wanted, you know, gonna do this and so um. You know, I'm not saying I'm I was smarter than anything anybody else. It just once I got it, I got it. You know, I'm you men. I want to say it, but I
knew my second year. But if we wouldn't change offensive line coaches, I've never been here, bro really, because the offense was sent you it was to the point, Mike, I understand totally saying. It was to the point where as an offensive lineman, if a got moved six or seven inches one way or the other, it almost changed
our whole blocking scheme. If you line up in trips three wire receivers the one side, uh, and then you motion one of them, guys, our whole secondary would literally start screaming stuff out, not only to themselves, which most of them knew it, but to the linebackers. Like you said, you know, then you know that I'm not here. I'm not backing you up. I'm over here now. So I used to I used to marvel at guys who would survive.
It wasn't about where you athletic enough? Gil Brent was bringing in athletic guys, but where you from the shoulders up? Smart enough to stay here? Right? Yeah? Yeah, yeah, we had the best athletes. Believe me, we had to go get you off a tennis court. They was getting the best athletes. Well, Michael, what do you think about everything Wall's nomination near for Hall of Fame? I think that's been a long time coming. Yeah, I really do. And you know, everything has has done something that no better
about in the league have done. And that's uh with the interceptions, Uh, you lead the league and interceptions three separate seasons. Uh, I mean that's uh, that's spectacular, right. Yeah. You know when I first met Everson Man, you know, some people call Arry, but you would never meet the more confident guy and his abilities and who he not just as ability is on the football, but who he is as a man. If you meet him, you're gonna You're gonna meet a guy that feels good about itself
in his situation, you know. And uh, you know how Mike is, um being humble about Walls wouldn't be that helpball, you know. And they they I agree with you, and and and I was I was just thinking this weekend about Everson and I did a memory just popped up because and I remembered Everson getting beat UH on pass and I can't even remember who who, what team was or whatever, but you know, he came over UH to the bench and sat down on the bench and he
just got beat for a touchdown or something. And all he said was man and and you know, and I kind of expected him to say something marath and you know, blame somebody or they've classed or whatever. All he said was man and and And to me that was confidence because he couldn't believe that happened to him, right, he could not believe it. Man, That man was man, I got beat Like man, this dude, really, you know, so, oh, I understand totally what you're saying is uh, I look back, man,
and you guys just with great guys. Man, y'all y'all played with great confidence. And and I'm this is what was so unique was once again a rookie like myself or anybody else, that was the first time with coach Landry in this schemes because Coach Langer was the offensive coordinator and the defensive coordinator. Because he was able to look at film and come in on Monday and tell
and we Mike, they don't know. He's sitting in front of each other offensively and defensive, and he coach Landry would call you out from the whole team in front of the whole team. You remember that, Mike, Oh yeah, you know. It used to be funny. Man. Like Belichick does with his team, he would call you had to be responsible for your teammates. And they're gonna call that right here, Randy. The Sporters took it because it was so weird. I listened to the defense. It was so weird.
I'm like, why wouldn't he take a step inside when the play going outside? But he had to take that step inside because the linebacker was going outside on the initial read. Now you had to take your steps first, you know what. I ain't think, man, this don't make no sense. I see the ball going outside. Hey, Michael, do you have a a podcast friendly Nate Newton story
that you can share with us? There we go, Nah, Gus, I can't imagine that all these old veterans on the team and a young Nate Newton what he think about? I was quiet my first year and a half two years. I was quiet. Basically, that's true, Michael. I couldn't learn nothing, that is true. But I I don't I don't know
if this is a good one or not. Oh yeah, Uh the season that Nate came in, and you know, we had uh run for these and all that bench press and and uh so you know, to be competitive and and par uh there was offensive lineman versus offensive lineman, and Nate ended up being the fastest um offensive lineman on on our team, and and and and you know, and a lot of guys and kind of the wond like I ain't got through right, but but we was like they ain't gonna give him a chance to start
or anything. And uh and that was kind of like the the joke you know that that that season. But we were impressed with me just because athletically, you know, I offensive line was around two seventy two sixty yeah, two sixty three hundred, the fastest fastest guy, fastest offensive lineman on the team, and athletic, I mean, just had it all. We saw Mike. Excuse me, so, Mike, but
see that what I was saying. It took a couple of years for you to learn this system and That's why I said athletic didn't have nothing to do it with it when you first came into coach Landry. Since that's why when I saw Downs, I saw Walls, I saw Dennis. All these guys were smart, smart players. You know,
they knew the system. They knew how to uh fornago within the system because they didn't always play exactly how coach Nanager wanted it, but they had to be smart to say, Okay, well this is what I saw, and this is what I told a guy, you know, and the offense was basically the same. Guys will sit up like they're gonna cut him. He don't know the system, they're gonna cut him. You know. Well, I'm glad you verified because Nate's been telling us from zero to forty
yards he can beat anybody from zero to ten yards. Bad. I extended about forty forty yards like I could be sucked up. So, Mike, do you do you do you keep in touch with the guys of your when you came in like Dennis, and I know you talked to everything, but do you keep up with you guys? Yeah, you know, it's it's kind of difficult to keep in touch. But
like I we were talking about earlier about golf. That's where I see, you know, most of the guys that I played with, and you know Dave Donley, you know, he he can play golf every day if they let him. And so, uh, you know, I get to see him and of course every son and uh you know ta yeah, I see two tall uh a lot um And I can't think of you getting old. Yeah you say that as a joke, but yeah, hey, Michael, how is in
your eyes? How is the game changed from when you first came into the league to what it is now? You know, I think it's it's more because of cool more, you know, because all the rules and regulations that have changed.
And like um, and I can't remember what they called it, but when you make a tackle from on the guy from behind and you pulled horse collar pars collar, Yeah, we we did that every week, you know, so we things like that, uh, you know, And and I'm kind of glad they changed it because you can't hurt somebody, you know, tackling that way. But it's just more physical. And I and when I looked back in the seventies, you know, with Roger start Back and mail Renflow and
those guys. Uh, it was the same thing. It was. It was more physical, uh than it is now. So that's that's that's it is. Uh. Do you there were so many interceptions within your era and you had more than than than most any one of your era as a group. Do you think there are so few now because the NFL is so risk averse on offense or are people just not talented in that regard the cornerbacks? Yeah, I would. I would say it's a little bit of both.
Um and not that we were that athletes per se, but um, we when we thought about we we wanted to accept it. We didn't we didn't want to knock it down or or whatever, and so you know, my
mindset was was just different. You know. Uh. We would talk before the game about trying to make the interceptions and I don't you know, I don't know if they do that now because I haven't been around the guys, but I mean that was on our mind and so I think along with having a good defensive line, but our mindset as well created an atmosphere for you worth
getting more interceptions than anything else. You know, Like we talked about earlier, with everything in one year, everything getting the leveling and then it's getting nine and I get seven. You don't you don't see that no more. Now there's a generation of cowboy fans that can't even imagine that kind of productivity coming from the cornerbacks. M Yeah, and so I I think a lot of it has to
do with, you know, the way you think. You know, if you if you if you just trying to survive, yeah, and make a tackle or knock it down, then that's probably what you're gonna do. Uh. But you know, we and and and I think everything and I kind of started up and off. Our first game in eighty one was against the red Skins and and in DC, and uh I made the first interception. I made an interception and uh um, I think within two minutes, you know
that they were on the field. Uh And and Everson wasn't starting at that time, but Everson made two interceptions. You know, he was he was a nickel owner and he had two interceptions. So we and we won the game, of course, but um, just the first game of the year. We got a couple of rookies, well actually we had Lyon Feller's was a rookie as well. And and we
I think we ended up with three interceptions. Maybe it was four, but that kind of set us the pace too, you know what was gonna go on because that's you know, we felt good. Yeah, so that was that was fun, I mean, and it actually started that first game of the year and it went on, you know, for the whole um season for your career too. Well, Michael, we appreciate you hanging out with us for a few minutes. This was really cool to have you on. And uh,
we'll hopefully talk to you soon. Kurse got your numbers, so maybe we can get you on in the future things. Mike. Good to hear your voice. I was glad. I would be glad to do that. And they always good to hear from you, man. So let's let's try to hook up something, all right. Maybe we can get you in here in the studio so you can actually hang out with Nate a little bit. Yeah, I'll do that. It's one's going to go to Mexico. Man. Well, I thank you, Mike,
all right, all right, take care. Let's take a quick break. And we got about seven or eight minutes left and I want to get you know what, don't just go ahead and finish the show. Okay, I want to get back into what Nate was saying while ago, because I agree with Nate. What's that the Tom Brady argument? Everybody's sick and tired of Tom Brady winning. And I'm sitting you know what, do something about it. We were witnessing greatness like I actually used to. I used to be
the same way. And then I realized how good this cat is. Like at halftime, we were watching the game at the sports bar on the property there in Mexico. Halftime, I was like, they've been outplayed the whole game. They can't move the balls, like the y'all realize they're winning the game. The Patriots are gonna win this game. Like there was no doubt in my mind. That's how good he is. And let me tell you how funny this is. And and this is when I really really noticed it.
The Seattle Seahawks. You could have ran the ball in one yard. You want to be super smart, get an interception, lose the Super Bowl. You are Atlanta winning the game. Oh he had to was run the ball, which you want to be. Oh, we're gonna see to who we are. We're gonna pass the ball. Guess what The Patriots Okay, you want to do it like that, Thank you. We just go want to mention and stop your passing game or not that you get an end zone. Guess what they lose the game? Now you got a run game.
That's awesome. You've been mixing it up. The young quarterback Bortles have been playing lights out. Guess what you're doing. First down? You run the ball getting no yards. They're like, oh they dummies run the ball again getting no ya. Don't you think you should pass on first down? Just up one time, try to get seven yards to the one and too. So guess what Jacksonville lose. Now, let's see what flets the cocks and the balls gonna do. Y Nick flos and the balls just flets the cocky.
They're not giving the Eagles a much chance. It seems like, oh, what's the spread? I don't even look. I'm not sure. I haven't looked at it all. Look it up. I think if the Eagles get on top, they can do it differently. I think if the Eagles get on top, they can do it differently than than most teams because they are defensive minded team, but they also can run the ball with you with a gi and the big guy that they got from New England. I can't think of his name, but Lunt So I think they can
run the ball equals well. And then Clement's got number thirty. Heal a nice guy. All my man gotta do is not panic. Nick Foles, just don't panic like uh my boy to fight him's case. Kingdom finally showed up the truth. It took him sixteen took away eighteen games, and the true case Kingdom finally show And I'll tell you what, man, I bet Carson Wentz is just sick because you know how hard it is to get to him. He got
that team to a super Bowl. He knew he hadn't played the last what three games, and him to sit there and watch and just know like this, this could have been my shot. It might have been his only chance. So but I with you, Nate, like I just I'm just appreciate. I appreciate what you see. I appreciate, you know, like even the Golden State Warriors, you know, Kevin and Kevin Garnett. He he's so loed. He well where he was once setting out for him. So I'll tell you what, man,
you know what, I'm gonna leave the Thunder. You gonna play for Detroit, I'm gonna show everybody who I am. That's stupid. Why not go to the Warriors. You can get what I'm saying. And so my greatness thing is simple to this right here. Birthhead, Rex Birthhead, He's like He called New England. Hey, man, coach, I know you know how to use me. He called Belisha, I know you know how to use me. Let me come play for y'all. Why would Rex Birkhead League one play? Said, man,
let me go to Cleveland. Let me show everybody who I am. Yea. The people that criticize those people or the same people that would do it exactly like they're Oh, man, I would never do that. You don't want to win a super Bowl? People hope that the day of I'm gonna build this team is over that went out? Would
call free agency made that obsolete. When you give a guy a chance to say, I'm gonna make twenty five million dollars a year next to a guy that's gonna help me win a Super Bowl or NBA Championship or Baseball World Series versus nah, I'm gonna take twenty five meal and just go over him and be a statistical genius and lose the rest of my career. Come on, man, it happens though a lot of guys look at the money. Yeah, they go for the money. They used the budding. I
mean that first contract after my rookie one. I'm gonna get the money and then I'm gonna go play. Gotta go even you gotta play. And it depends on how much money we're talking about, like if if it's if it's brother. Basketball is different. You don't have to even have this debate. Football, you have to have a fate depending on who's got what up under the cap. You
don't have to have a debate. In basketball. People can know that your contract coming up and they're gonna dump for you know, they started playing in a couple of years. The Warrior's right. Okay, they saw two years ago that Durant was coming up, so they the great Uh Jerry West, Hey, look man, we need for you to do like you did when you win and got shocked. We need for you to do that when you win and got this guy Paul Kasaul. He did this ain't something Jerry West
just started doing. He knows how to go talk to a dude and they're like, Hey, we need for you to go get Durant. And so they all the madly knew the guys they was getting in trading for they already making. And even if they knew, if they would have failed and not got the rant, the t would have still been good enough to be challenging for NBA Championship. They just wanted to seal the faith of the rest
of the league, you know, not me. And I get an arguments with guys about this because Lebron is fighting a battle by himself. Because I tell people saying, y'all keep looking at the NFC of the East Finals. Lebron ain't looking at the East. He looking at how can I be the Warriors? And so most fans you ought to be satisfied. No losers are satisfied. Winners want to win. The Cowboys should be looking how to beat the Patriots, on how to beat the but it steps. It's always steps.
That's why Lebron left Cleveland. He knew he couldn't make that happen in Cleveland, so he left and went to Miami and learned from one of the great guys that what's the gym for the I can't think of the gym for that. Pat Rollins one of the best that building the team and nothing. And he showed his cat how to build a team. Then he took off. He went back to Cleveland and put him a team in place. But he know like, oh man, I can't beat I
can't beat Durant. I had it, I had it. I figured out how to get Lotok Curry, how to how to play him, But you can't figure out how to play U Kevin Durant. He needed another. That's why he wanted Paul George because he needed somebody that could stand up, play defense and pressure. I'm on the other end when it's time for him to play defense. So when you're building a team and you and you in the right league,
the NBA is the right league. If you're trying to build a quick fit, instant team, the NBA is the right league. But you still got some preparation. It's four and a half Patriots. That's it. It's dropped a little bit. It was I think it opened like a five or six, and how it's four and a half? Who you got? Patriots? Tired of him? Think's gonna win? N I ain't going against Tom Brady, ain't going against the people that you can get any excuse you want until you take it,
and even next year, you gotta take it twice. For me to be the man, you gotta beat the man twice. Yeah, you got used the man who you got, Douglas. Like the brothers said in the street, you could be bad. You can talk that over the police, y'all. You want to the pool, ye over? That's right? Yeah, that used the man who you got. Oh, I'm gonna I'm gonna take that wisdom from Nate and apply it to my life. But I will go with the Patriots all four unanimous.
And that's why that's why the Eagles get has got a chance, right, that's all. They played the game right now. I don't believe me. If if that Monday, if they win, if the Eagles win, I'm gonna be excited because the NFC East one. So I'm kind of like that. If I love my division, I hate my division, but I love my division. I hate the Eagles. Can't stand in New York Giants, I do something bad to the Red skin. But if we win a Super Bowl, I'm down with the East. There you go, Well, I missed you guys.
Glad you're back. Good news is I'll be back next Monday. Good. I think you can get us another guest. See what we can do. You only seem to be able to do that whenever I'm not here. Doesn't have to be next week. But he's got to get James Washington. That guy's name has come up so much and we know he's a good guest. Who's drive by Jane Washes found another dude in the Senior Bowl. Well, Kurt, thanks, Well, no, Douglas gotta find us somebody. Everybody that got somebody except
Douglas really really challenge. That's what she said. I pull them out the closet, pull them out. Whoa that kind of show? Now, Douglas Douglas, thanks for pushing the buttons with a guess. Thanks for right, Thanks for bringing it as usual. Kent, thanks for pushing the buttons. We will It's eleven o'clock on Mondays, even o'clock. Try to be on top.
