Episode description

I made a video with John Kruk from Yaesu about the latest info we have on the FTX-1F new QRP Radio, and that video got lots of really good comments, so I wanted to respond to some of them.

Thank you for choosing to download the Ham Radio two point zero audio podcast rip. This is the audio taken out of a video or a live stream I did recently. You can catch all my videos on YouTube Ham Radio two point zero and catch us live every Sunday night at seven pm Central Standard Time for a different topic each week. Thank you for the support and thank you for being a member of the community. I had John

Crook from Yazoo on the channel in March. Yeah, I'm gonna remember what month I'm in, in March, March of twenty twenty five, and we were talking about the YAESU FtM five ten, the new dual band mobile system fusion radio that they had. But the live stream went for almost two hours, and towards the end we just kind

of started talking about random stuff that Yesu's doing. I cut out a clip of that, like a ten to twelve minute clip of that where we were just talking about the new FTX one F small QRP ten watt radio that will be dual receive with hf VHF UHF six meter all mode on all the bands. And I put that up there and it was I got a lot of really really good comments on that video, but I got some good comments on Reddit too, and I want to share those with you today. Today's video is

sponsored by ham dot Live. Take your net to the next level with ham dot Live, a free logging program that is web based and works from any platform. So I like to browse around Reddit. As I've told you guys, I really like to read articles on here. Some of them are kind of good, some of them are very good. Some of them are kind of like, ah, yeah, this

guy's just being a troll. But generally speaking, I found some really good art articles on Reddit, and I've made some videos about him, and you guys seem to comment about them quite a bit. So first off, when I want to get a shout out to Coastal Radio, don't know who this gentleman is. No idea who this person is. He does not share his call sign in his profile picture here. I don't think this is Walt Coastal Radio, Coastal Waves and Wire. I don't think this is him.

I think this is somebody else. But he is a top one percent contributor and he posted this. He just posted basically a title and a link to my video. This is a clip from the live stream that I did where I was talking to John about updates to the FTX one F and then he posts Coastal Radio posted on here. It says, in terms of updates, we have no updates. Okay, I don't agree with his assessment of that. But the reason I'm making this video is

I wanted to read through some of the comments. The comments are the good part of the video you're watching right now. So we're gonna start at the top. This post is only about four or five days old at the time of this recording. I made my post at the very bottom here, and I'm gonna read that to you last. So we're gonna go through here and do this year and Happier with the seven oh five is the first update Coastal Radio the original poster here. He says, I was about to buy the seven oh five when

this radio was announced last year. Now my money is burning a hole in my pocket. He says, edited to add, I'm happy that you love your seven oh five. I may still end up with one. I've got my seven oh five in my armlock cage in it's actually in the truck right now. Just did a twelve meter PoTA activation with it. Ten watts on just last week at a park because the twelve meter band has been up. I'm not getting rid of my seven oh five. I will be picking up the new yea'zy radio. I'm not

getting rid of my seven oh five. I'm one of these guys who likes to cry and complain about QRP, and then when a new QRP radio comes out, I go buy it. Moving on, the next reply says, this is exactly the kind of comment that I don't understand. What about this radio makes you think it's somehow better than seven o five? Are you just hedging on the cost of the radio being lower. I think most speculation is that the radio cost will be higher than the

seven oh five. Again, we talked to John about that on the live stream and in that clip that I shared with that's the topic of this original post here, and he says that they don't They don't have any information, or at least none they can share with us about what the cost will be. The speculation is gonna is that it's going to be somewhere closer to two thousand dollars rather than one thousand dollars. At the time of this recording, that the seven oh five is around thirteen

fifty ish. Kind of goes back and forth, depend on what monthly deals Icon's running. So, but the speculation is that it's going to be more expensive than ICM. I could see it go the way. I don't really know. I don't think I have an opinion one of the other. They want to compete with the seven O five, So maybe it's cheaper, but it's going to have more features of seven O five and newer, and it's gonna be newer, so maybe it's more expensive. I don't know, Okay, But

the op replies to that statement. He says, I like doing satellite operations sometimes, but my walks on kV. You've KGUV nine D mate D senses itself on VU VU birds works fine for UV. Interesting, hadn't heard that before. It seems like Yes will have the ability to do full duplex and on VHF and you UF. Yes. Now they have said that the Yazu will have full will have full duplex because it's dual display. And you can see that on the screenshot that I used for my thumbnail.

You can see four thirty two dot five on the right or on the left. Rather, i'd learn my right and left four thirty two dot five on the left, fourteen twenty meters on the right. So it's supposed to be full duplex for doing satellites, Like what the original posters talking about here, it would be cool if my field radio was able to do dual duty rather than buying another high end dual band mobile just for satellite. Additionally, if this is full duplex, it would let me work

linear birds in addition to just FM ones. Yes, very true. Otherwise, I don't know what all the specs are and if it will be better, worse, or the same as the seven oh five. I'm curious to see if this thing will offer what this thing will offer before I make a decision to drop the cash. Previously, the seven oh five was the only game in town. As soon as the ft X one F is available, we have choices for me. It's ultimately not about the best radio, but

the right radio for me. That's a very good statement. I like that statement. I like that statement right there. I couldn't agree more. For ultimately, it's not about getting the best radio, but the right radio for you. What are you gonna use that for? I've said that many times, and all my best videos best, HT best Mobile, best HF, best QRP best DMR. What are you gonna use it for? How are you going to use it? And that answers a specific question, So this is a very good statement

he's making here. There's also possibility that the user interface may be similar to FT seven ten, which we regalnize. I think it probably will be. That's just my guess. I also don't understand your comment. What makes you think that it won't be better than seven oh five? And I commented on this little thread here. Okay, this is not my last comment. So most everything Yazu has relieved in the HF rold in the last five years is better than its ICOM counterpart as far as received sensitivity

and signal purity. Okay, basically I'm talking about Sherwood reports and tests in a lab, not in a real world environment. Okay, they don't have a great menu system. Granted ICMS is better. I'll I'll acknowledge that, and I have icons, And again I'm keeping my seven or five. I'm not getting rid of it. But as far as performance goes Yaesu's on top. Look at the sure reports and other test results. If

you don't believe me. Also, how many radios has Yazu released since twenty twenty now count icoms releases, And I've said that in multiple videos in the past. Okay, this guy run wants to know why do ampture radios have to look like an aftermarket car stereo head unit from the nineties. I don't really, I don't really agree with that. I see what he's saying. Okay, it is a different form factor, very very very similar to the seven o

five form factor. I see what you're saying. If you don't like the look of it, you know, to each his own, Okay, I get it, I get it. I'm gonna thumbs up him anyway, because the kids were putting aftermarket radios in the cars in nineties and now they're old enough to get started ham radio jokes. Aside, My YESUFTDX ten looks almost exactly like the Sony I put in my eighty eight Terseell back in ninety six. But

I kind of like it. I've never seen really that would be a big freaking car stereo because the YAZUFTDX ten screen is huge. I don't know, I don't know. I don't know that. I don't I can't see that. I'm looking, I can't see that. But hey, if what you're saying, okay, here's some here's a little bit of merit to which I don't think there's any merit to

what you're saying. I don't think they look actually look like car stereos from the nineties, But hey, if they do, then aren't we always asking how to get more younger people interested in amateur radio. Give them something they can relate to. This one's good. Here, What would you like them to? What would you have them look like? An iPad with garbage touch screen? Everything? Definitely not, definitely not, And he replies, definitely not. I prefer a mix of

vintage brawn design esthetic and military utilitarian ruggedness. I you know what, I can't say. I disagree with that. I think that would be I think if we had I think the most recent radio that might fit that description is the recently discontinued twice Icon ice seventy two hundred. It had a very rugged military design and look and feel to it. The screen was just monochrome, was not touch screen, was the old eight bit character screen like your alarm clock, and nothing special about it. But it

was a fantastic, very rugged radio. So yeah, I would I would agree with that. ICM definitely has better ergonomics, and the UI part I will agree with. I think something to do with it is that for new buyers these days, waterfall is more important than the received sensitivity and antennas. Yeah, sadly, I think you're right, And so for the rest of the design, short design sort of

falls in line with the large, fancy color display. Now the icom Ic seventy three hundred and the new seventy seven to sixty have a large color display with a really fancy waterfall two, So everybody's doing that. In other words, the latest u HF radio from Kinwood is the TS eight ninety I believe has a good a good waterfall, So everybody's doing that. But more people are concerned about

the waterfall than the receiver sensitivity. And that was my that was the point of my original comment at the top. In a hobby where people still actively using sixty plus year old gear, I'd imagine it's tough to figure out how to time and produce new, updated equipment. All right, here we go. Wk U ace Hamy Radio two point zero had a yes you rep on the other day. Yeah, the one that was in the video that you're replying to. But okay, and he basically said that they were waiting

for the FCC approval. Apparently the FCC really cracks down on sharing pricing if things are not approved, so they can't do that. Yet. The stuff is slow at best of times, and with this current political turmoil it may slow things down a bit. One comment says, I just saw that. He also said their planning on global release, so it's taking longer to coordinate approval. Yep, that was all in the video. That's literally what this video is. Yeah. Hotel Hero, Yeah, Hotel Hero, you get it. Yeah. I

didn't realize it was this link. I had maybe four or five hours of sleep. Oh man, I'm hearing you. My allergies have been killing me lately. Get some sleep, brother. Okay, So you guys are all correct. I agree with everything you say. So this guy says this is a BS excuse, and he links to something about new FCC equipment marketing rules allow pre sale of radio frequency devices to consumers, and he links to this wily dot law. So I don't know, maybe I'll go read that. I'm not gonna

go read that. Right now, I'll share a link to this article. You guys can go read that. There's been a lot of comments on that original video saying that what John said was wrong about Yazu not being able to release prize due to FCC regulations. I don't know. I mean, I know John. John's a pretty straight shooter. He he'll tell you. He doesn't tell you what you

want to hear. He'll tell you the truth. And if it's something he can't talk about, he's like, I just I can't talk about that, And I'm like, you know, that's an honest answer. I understand he is restricted from saying certain things because he works for Yaesu. Okay, you work for Icon, you work for Kinwood, you work for freakin' any tone in China. You going to be restricted from saying certain things. It's just the way capitalism and

consumerism and commercial manufacturing works. It works this way and every You know, if you worked for Canon Cameras or for Nike on cameras and they were working on something new, as a person who might be a sales rep, you wouldn't be able to talk about that until they say, okay, press release going out tomorrow. Now we can talk about this. This is not uncommon. This is very very common in the manufacturing commercial manufacturing industry world. And YESU is JAESU

manufacturers amateur radios, but they are a commercial vendor. Okay, you and I can go build a radio in our garage and put it on the air. It'd be totally legit to use a home brew radio under Part ninety seven of the Rules and Regulations of Open Radio Experimentation.

That's our license gives us that. But since YESU is selling stuff for profit, the rules apply to them a little bit differently than it does you and I. If I started building a homebrew radio and started selling it for profit, then my rules would say the rules would change for me, at least when I got to a certain degree of units sold they would. So it's just it's not the same thing. So this is this is common everywhere. I believe what John was saying. I do.

I believe what he was saying. I don't think he would lead us as I don't think he would just make up something and say, no, we don't want to tell you the price. FCC don't have anything to do with it. We just want to I don't know. I don't think he would do that, but that's my opinion and you can take that or leave it however you want to do. This is a good comment here. Folks complain about Yes's timelines like they are the worst ever. You really ought to have lived through ten tech, and

this guy says, yeah, some folks are upset. I'm just a bit antsy. As long as I get a q r P field radio I like by summer, I'm happy. That's the original poster replying to that, I'm sure Yes wants to sell it and they are pushing as hard as they dare. We need to just relax and let the lethargic system do its thing. That's a good way to describe it, the lethargic system, because these things are everything's a hurry up and wait game with new equipment

being released to market. It just is. There are a dizzying array of excellent radios in the market to choose from for ops that need something immediately and coastal radio. The original poster says, one, I'm excited to see what it offers. I'll be buying either the FTX one or the IC seven to five as soon as the thing is approved. So my comment here which is the last thing we're going to talk about. Don't forget that. Today's

By the time this video post, there might be a few more comments on it than what you're seeing right here. But this is the comment I made right before I hit record on on the video. Okay, and this is this is what I think if you had spoken and I'm I'm replying directly to the title of this article, which it is in terms of updates, we have no updates.

That's not entirely true. It's not entirely true. And here's my comment about specifically that if you had spoken to Yezu at the Tokyo Hanfair last year or Hamcasion this year, then watch this video of the updates. The updated info should be apparent to you. Yes, they are taking too long, but that is common from everyone in this industry, any industry. Actually. Patience is not our strong suit. I'm guilty of this too. I want the radio yesterday. I don't blame you, guys,

I really don't. Crying and griping about it online is not gonna change anything. But I'm with you on that, Okay. Patience is not our strong suit. But I can almost guarantee that when this radio releases, they will sell out quickly and you'll be forced to wait for the second batch if you don't take early advantage. I might be wrong, but I don't think that. I am so. I can almost guarantee you that when this radio does release, it's

going to be popular. It's gonna be popular. There's gonna be a lot of people buying this radio, putting them on the air, and using them. Dual receive, dual display, full duplex. As far as UHF VHF goes. Someone asked in one comment somewhere about whether it would duplex or crossbandpeat between HF and VHF UHF and while that might be a fun thing to try on ten meters, which is the only HF band where you can legally use FM.

I don't really see the point in that. I mean, I guess you could crossband it from UHF to ten meters and work some ten meter repeaters and that type of thing. I kind of doubt it will do that. I doubt the crossband feature will work on HF, but who knows. Who knows. Maybe that's kind of cool. But I think this radio is gonna be very popular, and I think it's going to be an introduction to a new line of radios that Jesu is releasing, because Yesu has been very good about releasing radios for the last

five or six years. Ever since the Japanese factory fire COVID locked everything down all other lockdowns, you know, stuff in China get in lockdown for various reasons, they have been on the game releasing radios unlike some of their competitors for the last five years, and I've been pretty happy with all of the products I've got from them. So five years ago, I wouldn't have really claimed to be much of a Yazu fanboy, but today I kind

of am. Although I still really like my Kinwood and my Ucom Radios two, so I try to be as brand agnostic as I can, but I will tell you which one I do like better. Given the opportunity, put your comment below. Let me go know what you guys think about this. I would like to know what your comments are on that, whether that video was actually updates, whether you like the updates, which you'd like to hear

about the FCC and pricing thing. I don't know. Leave me a comment blow thanks for watching today, and YouTube thinks that you want to watch these videos next, so go check those out. Seventy three
