Episode description

So much in the Metro Detroit area is named after Mad Anthony Wayne. We have Wayne County itself, even if punk rock retcon warriors would like you to believe it was named after New York punk pioneer Wayne (now Jayne) County. That’s actually the other way around. For some reason Texas born Wayne Rogers took their stage name from Wayne County, Michigan. Mad Anthony Wayne is also the namesake of Historic Fort Wayne in Detroit, as well as Wayne Road and even Wayne State University that has a statue honoring the Revolutionary War General.

But who was Mad Anthony Wayne and how did he get that super cool nickname? His story is so big it can’t be told in just one episode. This week we cover his childhood when he was just Little Grump Tony Wayne, and his life as one of the most effect American officers in the Revolutionary War and then his awkward transition after the war into civilian life. It’s a story that just snowballs with craziness!
