Ladies and gentlemen, we take you now behind the scenes of a police headquarters in a great American city. We're under the cold, glaring lights with us before us, the innocent, the vagrant, the thief, the murderery. This is the lineup. Hi, Matt's got himself a job. Boys pulled in fifty two suspects today, and thirteen more came in from the other divisions. Good as these girls

up front, Talbert girls on the left. There, Ash was bringing in the surf Phoenie girl and Barbara Pattins over on the side. Oh yeah, I see you. Well, I'll tell him I have to sit with the Talbot girl. You take Steason, I'll take care of Pattons. Okay, let's see a litter bit. Oh Barbara, Hello, luten heasy caught him? Oh, we don't know. I hoping. Feeling all right now? Oh? I feel fine, real fine? Eat hurt me much? Really, that's good? Tell me. Yeah. You know those other girls Broom

just from their pictures in the paper. When you first came in, I thought you were going to sit with one of them instead of me. Those men with them are only sergeants, aren't They only sergeants not a full lieutenant. While the audience room, may I have your attention to thank you. My name is Greb, Sergeant Matt Grebb. I'll explain the line up to you. Each of the suspects you will see will be number. I'll call off a number, their name and charge. If you have any questions or

identifications, please remember the number as signed of the prisoner. As I call his name at the end of each line. When I asked for questions or identifications, call out the number if you're sure or not too sure on the suspect. Having held the opposers have took your name, will assist you. They're seated among you. Please big top with your questions or identifications. When the presiders lead here, they are sent to the watch room and dressed back

into their jail clothes. It makes it quite difficult to bring them back after they leave here. The questions I asked these suspects familiar to get an actual tone of voice, so do not pay too much attention to the answers. And as they often line, bring on the line, all right, boys, keep it moving right overhead of the end of the stage. Come on all the way overboard. That's right. If that would be looking figure or

somethink. When I call your names, step out to the circle. When I ask the questions, talk up so the people in the back of the room can hear you. All right. Number one, William Green vacuancy other people when you live, William, Come on, talk up William, talk up us along with the back of the room. No play. Why to sleep last night in a park? Conferral boulevard? What do you do? What you work? I get along? Do you ever think of getting a steady job? William? Where the world coming to an n nay day?

Now? I should spend my free time working on I'm stupid job. Lots of people in the same world with you. They all were Gummidge, all of Gummidge. I'm playing it smart. You were in the county jail ten months this past year, eight months the year before. Yeah, you're playing it smart, all right, okay, step back Number two Theodore Swan two ninety feelings to registered. I just got in town. I'm not going to register. B just got in town. You were in town long enough to

get south step? What do you want a guy to do? Come right down here fast, think it till everybody just got out of a click. That's what the loss says you have to do. Why didn't you do it? Oh? It's busy? Where do you live? Eight ninety third hook streak any weapons? No? Well, What about the knife? What knight the want in the property room? Oh that they use it from my fingernails?

A knife with an eight inch spring blade. Oh yeah, I got a long fingernails that nice, just about three inches too long to be legal. I suppose my finger there too long too. We'll look into it. Number three, Gilbert Farrell fifth where Gilbert forty five fifty session. I have a frontless street. I watch that. I'll tell a poper house room. What sort of a bit motel and cord? How I'm the six months maybe seven? What do you do for a living? I'm looking for a job.

What kind of a job. Well, yeah, there's something in our gym or maybe trying boxes or something. Is that your profession? Yeah, I know I know something about it. That's why you hang around the twelfth Street gym. Yeah. Yeah, that's why any harmon hair there is if you happen to walk off with four sets of boxing gloves. Oh, I a doid thing like I don't have to doi. Oh you have a sauce. It didn't come even though you aren't waging? Was sure I get calm

compensession? You mean unemployment compensation? Yeah, you're the greatest thing. I ever dinast cut rigg. It's amount of time to run act take a bowl looking into job, all right, slide down the end of the money number four. Man, Oh how about Benny? You know Barbara Patton? Man? Oh sure, hello, Susan. Well, I'm sorry you couldn't identify one of those men. I might take Barbara down and show the mug file. Maybe she can spot him there. Okay, I shouldn't quine out the

other girls there too. You still feel all right, Barbara? And not time? Oh fine, Lieutenant honesty. Okay, man, I'll be with Captain Marlow. You want me right, let's go, Barbo hope, I'll see you later, Lieutenant you will nine? Oh? Man? All right? Bill ran through sixty five to night. Nothing really experience. Yeah. I think any of these four girls would recognize him if they did see him.

It's hard to say. He's quickness, always late at night. None of them saw his face, just as back and only for a second descriptions, don't jim. He was tall, he was meeting, he was heavy, he was slender. Well, I'll have the boys keep holling them, and we can't pass up any possibility. Majestic kid, the manager called me again a little while ago, and I've still got three men in and around the theater every ninth his help looks okay. None of them get off before

twelve thirty. And these jobs have all happened between ten thirty and twelve. Each of these girls went to a late movie at the Majestic Theater or all. After the show, they came out, waited for a bus or street car, and someone passed them on the street and jabbed them with an ice pick. Well, lucky, none of them have been seriously injured. You know, Luck can't hold out. He's gonna hurt someone bad. One of these bands. We've got to get him being complaints are poling up by the

hour. I want you to drop everything else. You're a work now. Same goes from Matt Asher and Quinet Murphy. Anybody else should be okay. I want plainclothesman covering that entire area. And there's many auxiliary cards as we can spare. Maybe if we put the heat on, he'll hang up his ice pick for the season. You know, Bill, I don't think this bird cares one way or another what we do. Yeah, I'm afraid you're right, all right, Ben, would you Matt come on in. I

think you both met doctor Rock one time or another. Doctor Sudden Graham, Can I see you again? Doctor same mayor sugeant, Sergeant quin Oh, I remember you on that book salesman thing. Sergeant. That's right, Captain Waldo can't get down for this, So grab some chairs, boys, make yourselves comfortable. Well, we've picked up over three hundred suspects in these ice picks stabbings, no identifications. We haven't had any luck in the mug files

much more. I don't think we're gonna have anyone. So doctor Rock's here to give us some of his ideas. I hope I can do you some good, Lieutenant, Okay, sure, go ahead. Two questions here, gentlemen. What kind of man would have cost a young girl on a crowded street jabber with an ice pick, then flee and the other why would he do it? Well, we know it isn't for money. The girls haven't been robbed, and they aren't attack cases. No, no, And there's

only one other conclusion about him. He's pathological and overt sattists. I've gone over the complaint reports, and I've interviewed all the girls. Well, these kids have been mighty lucky. None of them have been struck in a vital place, the fleshy part of the arm or leg a thigh in one case. The Catholic legtims have been at the same age between nineteen and twenty three. If you think this has a bearing on it, no, yes, yes, very much so. I doubt if he'd attack an older woman.

There are indications that he might select his victims beforehand in some manner or another, and actually talk with him and know something about them, you mean, long enough so they'd appeal to him in this way. Well, that's about it. Another point, he always operates under the cover of darkness on a crowded street. Lieutenant Guthrie has suggested we look for a man who's working hours fit into the schedule. I agree with him. Maybe he works someplace where

he meets his girls. Well, it couldn't be in their neighborhoods. They live in different parts of the city, so it must be where he works or hangs out. Who could be Now, I have here some other points that you can think over. I believe your suspect will be agile, possibly indicating he's young. He may be a frustrated artist or sculptor, or a medical student. His taste will probably be esthetic. He'll be the first to tell you he doesn't belong where he is, that he's meant for something much

better. Any questions, But do you think he'd admit these things doctor, if we get him, Well, that depends entirely on his particular personality makeup. He might. On the other hand, he might claim an hysterical fugue and remember nothing about his actions at the time of commission. Any more questions.

Okay, doctor, that's about it. Well, when you get him, we've got a place all reserved for him at the County Hospital eighty seven a four fifteen at nine to nine eighty nine of five eighteen at the corner Madison and coldback and has some sign only get the smoke to come out and rings at two eleven and an all night mark at fourteenth Sheridan Molly still with a cold five said one there now half the night last night couldn't breathe.

Take it around here. Three E five Francs Park looks pretty in the daytime. There's a guy a lot of running space at night. Occupants unknown. All units, Area AH ad W sixteenth

Why would he do that to me? Any of you people would see anything?

Because it hurt pretty bad. Virginia, I'm not so bad. I mean I didn't even know what happened for a minute or two, and then I heard that. Did you see him? Did you get a good look at him? I didn't see anybody? Why did he do what? You? Alright, doc man, let's have a look. What's the matter is that? I still please? And hear me? Then what are you going to do? Could you tell us exactly what you saw? Did he crossed from in back of me? If a girl came towards me. He went toward her, tall, big husky fellow was the image of a god with the devil all around him. He passed her quickie works close. He passed through, and there's always hand go out

I prayed for her. Can you describe the man's face, mister Patcheck? I saw it. He didn't run away when it happened, He turned away to hurt of all? When there's always face? What kind of a face is it? He's face fine, he wanted, yes, where is it, mister Patcheck? Him across from the theater in a white jacket, white white, the color of evil? Why where I go from a soup? A bus boy in a white jacket? Which one? Yeah, gaylords cafeteria be closed? This time of night. Huh,

Any new fellows got a smoke for me? I'm Jim Gaylard looking for me. Yes, I'm Lieutenant Guthrie. This Sergeant Graham. How do you do? And we can talk better than my office to tennant? Okay, a Matt better stay down here, keep an eye on patching right this way, Lieutenant. When you call me this morning, I could hardly believe it, Lieutenant. We aren't certain of anything yet, mister Gaylord, but as the best lady we've had so far in these cases, I'll stay terribles.

What kind of a man would do it? Kind of a mint? And let's assume he's a pretty sick man, mister game On, and his actions are prompted by stimulus that you and I have never known. Hard to look at it that way, but you're a police officer. I suppose you'll have to I suppose I have to help have to go. Thanks. I have all the information you asked, all right here here we are all and all. We have thirty bus boys, some work full time and some only four

hour ships. Could you break that down? Well, we open at six in the morning, crew of twelve come on at that time and they all stay until three in the afternoon here alright, the next crew comes on at eleven and they go off too. How many on that shirt? Twelve? That means doing the heavy lunch? Are we have twenty four men on the floor clearing up? And when does the next shift come on? Four o'clock? Six men working from pot to ten. That's when we close. Our

evening business is small. People prefer the cocktail lounge. Can I see that? Liszt to play? Of course? Do you know any of these men, mister Galen? I know who they are and I recognize their faces. Well, do you know anything about them? I can't cop to their lieutenant, I really don't. Some of our kids in school, some of them hold other part time jobs A buss boys a bus boy around here, and we have a pretty fast turnover. Will anyone quit in the last week or

two? No, I haven't lost the boy for two months now, keeping my fingers crossed. Well, if you don't mind, I'd like to have these names and addresses for a couple of hours. You can keep it attendant. I have to thanks anything else I can do not right now? Thanks her? Well, maybe there is Our witness is sitting downstairs having a bowl of soup right now. He'll probably be here most of the day. He may try to eat everything inside. I've noticed that old man before. I'm

glad to see him getting a good week for a chase. Well, give me the building. I'll pick up the tab Lieutenant. I'm as anxious for you to get your man as anybody. Okay, my men will be in the waiting room, downstairs and at all doors. You run across anything you think might help. I'd appreciate it. If you go directly to Van I

will, of course. I'd have a daughter myself, just nineteen, and I've read about that book child Less Night, terrible thing about it, something like that happened to Mary Jane. I I don't know what i'd do now, and you have a pretty good good idea. How bad we want to get this man? Or one thing more? Do you use ice picks here all the time for chipping ice? Or where do you keep them? Mister Gaylor? Why every boss boy carries his own man? Hi the second ship?

Come on here? Yeah, pant checks are not doing so well. Nothing of it. Nothing. All those lists you got from Gaylor, no records on any of them. I should talk to all the girls again. They all had something to eat here before they went to the movie. That helps. I was beginning to worry about PATCHA. You think maybe he told us a story to get something to eat or a warm place to pray. What about bringing the girls down here to look things over? No, that's

wait, none of them really so much about his back. Pat check saw his face and no, he's still on a bet spen. Hi, Hi, man, let me a relief. Oh, I'm glad. How do people stand it in a cafeteria for eight hours every day to be the novis someone? Let's get out of here, Ben, you find a quiet place and have some lunch. Okay, hey, wait a minute, I checked spot of somebody. What. Oh, no, sure he has hooking him. He's standing up. I've been watching him for three hours, Ben,

he does that every time they put something new on the menu. You're sure, mister Gaylor, And I'm positive this is the last crew and every one of them's here today. Man, they're all out on the floor bed. What do you think. Well, he's had time to look at all of them. I've been hoping that he was wrong about it. Being one of my employees. He's always stuck me as a very confused old man. Hi man, Hi, anything from downtown roundns and some of the men working in

a shift. Ryan's from McAlister, Oklahoma. Then here a couple of months told his landlady plans on going to university next semester. Medical school, didn't say. Steele's twenty four, married, a couple of kids. Lives in Arvada as a filling station job. When he isn't here, he's trying to buy a house, serving nothing, lives in the boarding house, works with whites. Charger's over to the gym talking to people, you know what about the others, And I'm ready for a phone call. Okay, look,

tell him to keep on that anatomy angle. I think it's the best, right, come on, man, anything more, Lieutenant, No, we'll call you if anything comes up, mister game on, all right? If you have my number? Hi Yah? Who care? Mayn't we sit down? No? Well it's three thirty, mister Patcheck. You've been here all day along. True, I got to get to my praperson. My frain to way behind with all this commotion to date, and we're all way behind, mister Patcheck. Yeah, we didn't ask you to come here just to

way. Wait a minute, Hi, I remember why I'm here. Well, mister Patcheck, you've seen all of the men who work here, Yes, strong men, most of them some week and doomed. You look them over carefully. We've been hoping you'd recognize one of them. You'll remember what you told us last night about the man you know in the white jacket. Well, mister Patcheck, I'll pray for him. Well, have you seen the man we're looking for today? It must have if he worked here.

You don't remember him? Now? Is that him? It's a hard thing you ask of me. You find one fish and all these fishes, Are you sure that's him? Would you know the things I know? The face? Lieutenant? Well, ever since the face appeared, I've been wondering how to say this thing to you, Lieutenant go three. You mean, the man's here now in this place? What will happen to him? Will he be punished? You'll be examined. I can't say what will happen after that?

Tell us who he is, mister Patcheck? Should I? You told us yourself he's acted against God's will and the law of nature. I think you shouldn't. Should I? If you believe what you say about the violation of these laws, mister patcheck one man on the balcony, that's just appreciate. I saw with the pointed steel which one is he by the water glasses? That's Ryan Ray. Ryan worked here a couple of months. I did right, I did right. I didn't kill myself doing this. That should

come through. Yeah, take care of him. A man's up there. There's something witness. Yeah, Ryan, Huh, I'd like to talk to your son. Huh. What about we're police officers. Police officers. Yeah, you have a coat. I want you to come downtown with us. Well, why should I haven't done anything. You've been identified as the man who's been using an ice pick on several women in town. Oh I read about that. Well, why why would I do a thing like that? Don't you know? No, No, I don't. I don't know.

Well, we're talking over downtown. Wait a minit. I don't have to go down. Give me the pick, Gray, don't come near me, Ben sure. A revolver is a much better weapon than a nice pick. Ray, I'll use it if I have to. Right here, Well, it is a better weapon the right wrist. Okay, come on, don't you have to have some proof to take me into custody. We just said we had a witness one of those girls saw my face. No, just someone who prays for you. The lineup or before you passed the innocent,

the vagran, the thief, the murderer. Listen again next week when we again bring you the lineup. May I have your attention? Sunday afternoon on most of the same CBS radio stations. When King Arthur Godfrey on his round table holds Court Dan coverly speaking and remember you enjoy Grand Central Station every Saturday in the daytime hours on the CBS Radio network. Welcome Back definitely a very chilling episode. The scene with the girl who had been stamped was very dramatic and I thought, very powerfully done. All right, well, I we turned to some listener comments and feedback and we had a question

over on Facebook and was regarding Ed Begley. Thelma says, I noticed that in the show the line of one of the people in the show is Ed Begley is his son Ed Begley Junior. The actor in indeed his son is Ed Begley Junior. Ed Begley Senior was probably the role of most associated with was the role of the bigoted juror number ten in Twelve Angry Men. But

he had a very rich career as a longtime character actor. And then we have a review from the iTunes store Ashton MC eight eight riots regarding the app. I love the app. I wish it had a little better variety in shows. Some of my favorites aret on here. Richard Diamonds, Sam Spade, Philip Marlow, but overall a great app. I use it on my

iPhone and iPad. Well, uh, Philip Marlow is coming in forty six weeks, maybe a little bit of a forty four but uh yeah, yes, I do think some folks have I guess, in the words of Jimmy Duranty, gotten under a misapprehension, the not knowing that you know, this is a podcast that goes through the app and so you know, we can only go so many shows at a time, and the longer shows like the

ones he listed definitely present a challenge. But we've all got them on our big last of Great of detective shows up big last on Great to Tell Actors dot net. So Lord William and the Quick don't rise. We'll get to him in due time. All right, Well, that will actually do it for this week. We will be back on Monday with yours truly, Johnny Doller.
