What's Up? This is the granger Smith Podcast, Episode eleven. I can't believe it's been that many so far, but thank you guys for listening, as I always say, and thank you for inspiring me to know that they matter. I just think, in this crazy, fast faced world, every once in a while, you need the whole story, and
that's what these are about. Well, I'm in the back of my bus Wildflower, like I usually am for these podcasts, and like I usually am, I'm right in the middle of the crazy tour because that seems to be the time I could sneak away and get away from the madness outside and make a little podcast. Talk to the People,
Talk to ye Nation. This week is particularly crazy. We've been to Columbus, Ohio, Austin, Ex's Columbus, Ohio again, Birmingham, Alabama, West Virginia, New Jersey, Philly, Little Rock, Huntsville, Tennessee, Lexington, Kentucky, Los Angeles, California, Perry, California, and back to Austin And yes,
all of that is within one week. If you want to catch me in one of these cities, go to Grangersmith dot com forward slash Tour nowhere you could find out where we're going in advance and get your tickets, get your v If you meet and greet, she can come on the bus right here where I am now
and say hello. This is a fun podcast. Today, I was going to continue the story I left off in episode ten, which is leading to two thousand and nine in my music career, and I was working in my house in my home studio on a brand new album that was arguably the most important one I've ever had in my life because it's how I met my wife. And I want to tell that story in detail because that is so much of who I am now in
that album. That was my first music video. That was a side of me musically, in songwriting wise that I still continue on the same path today. But before I dropped that story on you, I have another little thing I want to talk about, actually two little things I want to talk about. A few days ago at home, I brought in my oldest daughter, London, she's six years old, and my middle son Lincoln, he's four years old, and
I let them ask me some questions. There's a front door swing at Jemma's house and a little stream up in the mountains, a shot gun seed and a ocean breeze, there's the fairest wheel, just spending around a midnight moon, I shining down a red sunset and the cotton dress. You read it every single good time, win a press, Rea Mine in mine Jam if you have a question for me on social media hashtag Granger Smith Podcast asked and asked the question that way I could search for
it just like I'm doing. Now read the question and answer it right here on the podcast, Mackenzie del Fridgsture says, are there any plans for a vinyl edition of When the Good Guys Win? It's a great question. We made a vinyl edition of Remington album a couple of years ago, and I thought that was a really cool deal. Even if you don't have a record player, it's a cool thing. I love to collect records, and you could have it. You could hang it in a frame on your wall,
get it signed. So know that we don't have any plans, but if enough people want them, if enough people react to this, then yeah, we'll make a vinyl edition of my new album, When the Good Guys Win. So let's get to this exclusive interview. So if you guys have any questions from me, I do you do. You already have three questions? Lincoln, do you have any questions for me?
I have two questions. All right, let's let Lendon go since she hasn't written down, and then you could ask if pretend that you're a fan of me, because I know you don't know this, but there's people that actually like my music out there. You do, okay, So pretend that you're one of them, and maybe there's something you want to know about me that they don't know, and you want to ask me that question. Yeah, all right, so Sissy you go first. Okay, First question, what is
it like being a dad? That's a great question. Thanks for asking that, London. Well, having you three is amazing. You make it easy. You drive me absolutely crazy sometimes, but that's good because that means you're a challenge and being a dad is what I've always wanted to do my whole life. You're a dad? Yep, yep, I sure am. Second question, what is it like being on stage? Wow? Did you write that? Now? You did? That's a good one. Well,
it's in adrenaline rush. Do you know what adrenaline is, Lincoln? No, adrenaline is when you're really excited and your heart starts beating, and your blood starts pumping through your veins, and you kinda get, you know, a little jittery and a little bit nervous. Do you know what that is? What I mean? Do you know have you ever had that feeling before? No, You've never been nervous or excited about something. So at school the first day, I was like, oh, no, I'm scared.
I'm scared to go to school. In the second day, I got lost, and I got scared again, and I didn't want to go to school. But the next day, when I actually wasn't, when I actually was in specials, I actually was like, I love this school. I want to go here forever. Yeah, exactly. That means you were excited about it. Have you ever had that Lincoln that feeling? No, you've never been excited about anything. No, what about when I get What about when I gave you my old
phone case in the little squishy? Yeah, so that feeling when you got the old phone case and the squishy, that's what I get when I go on stage. You said, what's it like being on stage? It's like getting that old phone case in the squishy. Second question, when did you start being a singer? Well, I started when I was about fifteen years old singing George Straight. You know who that is? Lincoln? Who George Straight? Ooh? Do you know who that is? Who? That's what I'm asking you?
Who not? I'm asking you? Do you know who it is? No? Okay, I do? I do? Do you know a song a country singer? That's right? Do you know any songs that he sings? No? Well, who's your favorite singer? Daddy? Who's your favorite singer besides Daddy? The girl that sings Stay? You know that girl that sings Stay. That's how I
feel about George Straight. So I know about you because Jazz told me when you were a little kid you to listen to George Straight a lot, and then you started singing him, and then you become my grandma, you dad, your mommy? All right, now, Lincoln's turn to ask a question. Two two, I'm sorry, two questions go let them Let don't you feel like when you're a cowboy? Wow? What do I feel like when I'm a cowboy? When you were a cowboy? When I was a cowboy? When was that?
And when you when you wear a Drea cowboy cat? You mean when I'm Donnie cowboy or back when I used to wear cowboy hat, when I used to sing all the time, and when you were it's just sing all the time. Well, I used to wear a cowboy hat because George Strait wore a cowboy hat and I always did, and I really liked wearing the cowboy hat. Made me feel like I was a real country singer. But then I realized that I had to be who I was, not who George straight was. And it's good
to be yourself right and to feel comfortable. And when you go to a restaurant and you're with your friends, you want to be yourself. And when I was at a restaurant with my friends, I was wearing a ball cap like a cap, like a eeee cap like I always wear now, and I was wearing one of those, and I thought, this feels like me. So it's important
to feel like yourself right. And when if you do something wrong, like if you're at school and you're doing like challenges with different classes, like me, I'm about to do that, and I'm kind of scared. But the thing you do do if you want to win, all you have to do is just to be yourself exactly right. Lincoln, what do you think about that? Ah? What was your second question? What do you feel like when you're a
little well like a little baby. I'm the same age as when River was used to be, same age as River now, which is two years old. Yeah, that's a great question. So I don't remember being two years old. My first memory was when I was four years old. Guess how old you are? Yeah, so that means right now you might be making memories right now that you'll
remember when you're my age. Can you believe that? And I remember when I was four years old and two years old because I remember when I was outside at our old house and I was saying, Dad, Papa, you remember that? What's your very first memory? My whole life? That I used to sit? We watched a video the other day. It was a long time ago, and we kept doing it over and over again because we were
laughing at it. And we saw this video of me playing the piano when I was no I think I was three and Lincoln was one, and he kept laughing at me playing the piano. Got your first memory? Yes? All right, Well, then what's your first memory, Lincoln? When I was when I was one? I want I don't know I did when with one? Maybe when you were three? Yeah, man, when I was on three, went all three? What did I do since you? When I was three? You had
when you were one, you were turning one. On your birthday, you had a tractor birthday and you smacked your head in the cake so hard that you hit the table and there was cake all over you. Yes, do you remember that, buddy? Yes? I got a question for both of you. Two my turn asked the questions more. Oh, you have one more? Then I get to ask my questions. We're going to read them all. When did wait, never mind? Do you miss us so much that you have hat hat have to cry in public when I'm on tour? Yes, I miss you guys so much. But did that really happen? You mean the tears? Yeah, you cried in public? Well, I have I have a question too. You said, I've got is that I'm going on tour in two weeks. Yeah, buddy, you're going to go on tour with me? Wow? What's your question? You said, when I will go in two weeks? Yeah?
In two weeks, you're going to go on tour with me by yourself, buddy, just me and you. You excited? Yeah? Wow, because I'm the only one who used to always go You're gonna go on tour with me? In one month. Did you know that? No? Yeah, Lincoln's going to Texas, and in Texas, in Arkansas, in London, You're going to Utah, Montana and Idaho, Santana. Wait going there too? Did I already go there before? I think you've been to Utah, But I don't think you've been to Montana, am I?
I think Utah was the place that was really cold, and we went to get donuts and we went to that little place where you were doing your That was Portland, Oregon. I go where I go to. You're gonna go to Montana. Well, you're gonna go to Arkansas. That is gonna be a fun ride. You're gonna ride the bus with me. You're gonna sleep? Are you gonna sleep in my bed or in a bunk? Babes' easy? Fu in a bunk? Are you gonna get lonely? It gets really dark in the bunk,
and it's also really dark. What's it like sleeping in a bunk, a tour bus bunk? Well, so first when I get in, I just get in, grab my phone, and I watch my phone, and then I turn off the lights when I want to go to sleep, and I just go to sleep and It feels like you're on and you're in a car and you're in a car ride, but you're in a bed. Yeah, that's pretty
much it. And it's really bumpy. I think when iron in my bunk, I I just I just weigh in my bunk, and then and then and then I and then and I called Daddy, and then and then I just and then I just and then you good, Just help me to on the TV and then just go watch TV in my bed. Yeah? Are you going to sleep good in your bunk? Do you? So? London has done it several times. You have not slept in a tour bus bunk yet, so you're excited, all right? So I want to ask you guys a question. Okay, what
does YE mean? Shurry up London? What does you mean? It means bass and casts. That's bass and cats. Yeah, my god, I know what it means. I know what it means. Uh Usa. Yeah, Oh, I know what it means. I know what it means, Usa, Texas, USA, Texas, bass and cats. That's what YE means. No, you know a lot of people don't know what YE means, but they wear it on a hat. Some people have it tattooed on their arms. Can you believe that? Would you tattoo yeee on your arm? Yes? I would not let you.
Why because I'm in I'm your daddy, I get to tell you what you get tattooed on your body. Well, Mama tells me if I could put like animals or butterflies or anything on my pat she did not tell you that. Would you get a tattoo of ye? Buddy? But but when I got your red poppy, I got a spider man a Spekerman face on an elbow. But that was a temporary tattoo, which means it washes off. Those are the best kind of tattoos, right. I have another question for you. When I say when the good
guys win? Who am I talking about? Don't you love it? Win the good guys? Don't you love it when is shit comes in? Yeah? Man, every now and then what goes around comes around again? Don't you live at long shot? Prayer? I'm a dog on a hill. Love a kid? Do you want to kiss and she? Don't you love him? Win? The good guys win? The good guys in the world that that help and be kind to other people and don't be mean or steal or bully. What do you
think it means? Buddy? Okay, So like if the good guys in the world are running a race and that if they win, then they get a special the specialist little prize, or if they get none, they might just say okay, thank you. I love that. Another question for you ready, who is Earl Dibbles Junior Daddy? But when you it's not me? Yeah, yes, you were in the water, biz because because you are more because I was at the ranch and you took me off to at the ranch new and you turned into or Dibbers and then
and then you go by the pond. Yeah, but I think me and Earl are actually two different people. Oh, I think it's another person. Yes, it's not really me. What if it's another guy? It is big on on YouTube. We watched Daddy sing on the songs and then and then we see you sitting in a chair and then old Birds appears in the chair. Yeah, see you see him at the same time. It's another guy, Yes it is. So what do you think, Lennon? It's a country boy, but it's a different person. But do you know what
I want you to do right now? Make the face it's you Daddy? It's you. How about that video where it's me and him in the same video. Well, you're just doing You're just doing one video first and then pause it and then do another video. But you have to dress up in Earle and then you cut it and it shows both of y'all. You think you're so smart because you're six. That's not true. There is a completely different person name Earl. No, there's not, I see you.
What do you think, Lincoln? There is? But yeah, but you have the closer Earl. Then why do I see you dress up on stage? I'm just resting on the bus when Earl comes out there. No, you're not. You take your shirt off and I see you walking walking down to get back in the bus. Lincoln, what do you think? Ahmah ah everything. Hey, I thought you just said, don't bully good guys, Remember we don't bully. When I sing country Boy love you, you haven't dressed up as
the Earl. Okay, that brings up a good point. What's your favorite song that I sing, Lincoln, Country bull Love? Well, that's Earl dibbles. What's your favorite song that I sing? The good Wite Lynn? I like it when the good boys win? How about you, Lennon, it was full drive. What's that one that's those three ws? What's that one that you just did? You're in it? No, you had that one for a long time there, No, it just
just came out. You're talking about a brand new song that I just wrote that's not even on an album in the world. You're talking about Gosh, I don't remember. I can't keep Why wouldn't we? It's why wouldn't we? Lincoln knows it. Why wouldn't we? Dave that forket Saturday Time fevers to girls getting it free? Guys, that's brand new. The rest of the world doesn't get to hear these brand new songs that I just write, but you do. So that's the benefit of being my kid. I guess you.
Guys always like my newest songs, don't you? And my second one is happing like cats I can make I can make a cat sound. Do you have a cat? Yeah? What's his name? Goose? Do you have a cat? Lincoln? No? But but but I woked up the cat some the cats that pet's market, and it really wanted me. And it was white and black, and it really wanted me, and and the name was called Bettye. May, Minie May no, Betty May. Okay, do you guys mind if I ask you one more question before we finish this. I do music.
You guys know that? Yeah? Did you know that music is how I met Mama? No, you didn't know that. But but archtensn you talked about Mama? You singing about Mama? What do you think about Mama? What's he saying? What are you saying? Or you're saying oxygen? Yeah? When when when you sing about Mama? Yeah? I wrote Oxygen for Mama Season the Seas in Mama, She's my life? Take like occy. Did you know that Mammy and I had our first dance at our wedding to Oxygen? No, that's
why I wrote that song. I should sounds just like it? I should dance do that right now? So did you know If it wasn't for music, you guys wouldn't even be here. Not crazy? But do you know how I met your mommy? I know we've told you guys at least right she was your friend? Nope, dryden Well, I wrote Oxygen after I met her. But do you know how I met her? No? I met her on a music video? What video was it? Guess? You've seen on
my videos. Right then, guess which one. Guess what I'm asking you to guess, Octygen No, sir, that wrote that after we met? Was it for a real drive? There was a music video? Oh oh oh no, that's not it, because She's oral Drive just came out. It's a song from a while ago. But I wrote the song and I had the music video road song. No, don't listen to the radio, Yes, don't listen to the radio. That song and that music video is the first time we met.
And don't listen to the radio if you caan't your heart ron because it always knows exactly wanted to play. You're bounding less, remembering you she's gone because you did your rod and drove her away song you do to get ready your hands, you know, but wherever you go, don't listen to the radio. The day that we met was in that music video. So if you go watch the video, you guys have seen that, right, Yeah, that's the first time we met. Was that video. Isn't that crazy?
And if it wasn't for don't listen to the radio, I would have never met your mama. And that's another story that I still need to tell on another podcast. I need to tell that because that album was so impactful for me, but I still had such a long journey ahead before the world ever knew my music. And that's what you guys need to understand, is that life is the journey and those years made me who I am, and your years will make you who you are. Anyway,
