Episode description

Transcript

Welcome to the Grammar Minute, where we're saving the English language sixty seconds at a time! I'm Lauren Smyth, and today we're going to talk spelling. Specifically, spelling on those pesky words that sometimes end with "s" but sometimes don't, like "toward" and "afterward." The difference here is, as you may already have guessed from how it looks, American versus British spellings. In hte murica, we spell it without the extra s. In most other English speaking countries, besides our good neighbor Canada which also values concision, it's spelled with the s. They are completely interchangeable and both forms are correct - unless you're following a style guide, in which case you might want to check. AP style, for example, rquires that the extra s be cut. That's your Grammar Minute! Visit thegrammarminute.com for more tips and tricks.
